Thank you, local farmers. It’s Fall Fair Time Fall fairs are iconic. They represent the heart and soul of our rural community and they’re about so much more than displays of big pumpkins, weirdly shaped carrots or chickens with wildly coloured feathers. Fairs connect us directly to farmers, the men and women who provide us with the food we eat. These rural events have been around forever. The Ramona Fall Fair has been entertaining us for 130 years; the Severn Bridge Fair since 1873; and the grandmother of them all, the Orillia Fall Fair, since 1850. That’s 169 years - seventeen years before Confederation; 78 years before penicillin; and fifty-three years before Ford started manufacturing automobiles. There are well over two-hundred fall fairs in Ontario. Although you’ll find common themes among them all, each of our local fairs has their own unique traditions. The 167th Orillia Fall Fair at ODAS Park runs from September 8-10. Some of the features include midway rides, a baby contest, a tractor pull and demonstration, displays of chickens or ducks, and a 4-H Junior cattle show. This year the main event is a FMX competition. The schedule is available at www.orilliafallfair.com. Severn Bridge Fall Fair is set in a beautiful forested fairground close to the Highway 11 Southwood Rd. exit. This year they present

their 144th annual event on September 9th. This fair is intimate and traditional, featuring agricultural exhibits, horse shows and lots of activities for kids. Look for the huge pot of local corn cooking over an aromatic hardwood fire. The complete schedule can be found at www.severnfair.org. On Friday, September 15th, the 128th Ramona Fall Fair opens with their traditional annual horseshoe competition. The next day is Fair Day when all events and exhibits open. Features of the day include baking, canning and needlework displays; a ladies nail driving contest; and the largest horse draw in the area. More information and the schedule is on their website, www. ramonahall.ca. Lastly, Coldwater has one of the largest fall fairs in the province. It runs over three days, September 22-24. They begin the festivities with a parade on Friday, September 22. Among many other activities, this fair features a midway, demolition derby, dedicated kids’ zones and a spelling bee.

Visit www.coldwaterfallfair.com. What I love about fall fairs is how my imagination starts to run wild as soon as I set foot on the fairgrounds. I can see back to the 1850’s. Fall fair day and farmer families wake up at 3:00 a.m. Magnificent horses are brushed and harnessed. Cows and sheep are washed and readied for competition. The most spectacular looking carrots, squash and pumpkins, along with all the fresh baking, are ready to win. After packing everything into a wagon, and well before the sun has fully risen, the family sets out to the fair, smiles on their faces. It’s a lovely picture in my mind and it’s what keeps me going back to fall fairs. It’s my opportunity to thank a farmer for everything they do for all of us. Whatever inspires you to attend at least one of the local fall fairs, you can be sure that your natural desire to visit the past will be fulfilled.

Test your smoke alarms like your life depends on it – because it does. By Dianne Kyle, Fire Prevention Officer Severn Township

Here is your guide to life-saving smoke alarms: • Install working smoke alarms on every storey of your home, and outside all sleeping areas. For best protection, install smoke alarms in every bedroom. • Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the ‘test’ button. If it doesn’t beep, it won’t be able to save your family. Replace the batteries and test again. • Change the batteries at least once a year, or whenever you hear the low battery ‘chirp’. • Check the date – smoke alarms do expire. All alarms, even those hard-wired, should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions. All smoke alarms older than 10 years must be replaced. • Working smoke alarms will give you the early warning you need to safely escape a fire. • Know what to do if your smoke alarm goes off. Plan your escape route and do home fire drills will all members of your family.

The above is one example of the two dozen pieces of art that will be up for auction.

Art Auction September 7th The Washago Art Club members have two goals: one is to learn more about art, to continually work on their skills; the other is to give back to their community. For each of the past few years they have given the village of Washago an outdoor art installation – canoe paddles, large maple leaves. This year, since May, their work, painted on pieces of liveedge wood, has hung in the village. Each piece represents early years in and around the area. Now, to support their ongoing work, it’s time for the art to come down and be auctioned off to the highest bidders. Plan to attend the auction at 2:00 p.m. on September 7th at the Washago Community Centre. Note: The art club also presents an art show and sale that day from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The photos (above) are of my two cats – when they were kittens – Magic, left, and Peaches. From the Publisher:

Taking a moment One day in August I was feeling a little under the weather as well as a little under the gun to meet deadline for this magazine. Added to that, I was obsessing that in a few days I’d have to get myself organized to go to Montreal for a visit with cousins. As I was fretting, I happened to look over at my two cats cuddled together in an arm chair. Their legs were intertwined and the younger cat’s head was resting on the other cat’s belly. They were breathing in sync. I watched for a while and then felt compelled to stop working, take a moment, and find photos of when they were kittens. Photos of kittens make people say ‘Aw. They are so cute.’ Instant relaxation. So, I looked at these photos, I did say ‘aw’. I relaxed and then I thought I’d share them with you. Maybe these photos will help you have a nice, quiet moment of your own. A couple of days later, fretting again, huddled over my laptop, I looked outside and realized that until that second, I had no idea it was such a beautiful day. If looking at kitty photos relaxed me, I thought, how about a walk? So I picked up my phone and texted my neighbour. “How about a walk?” I asked. A short time later, I knocked on her door and off we went. It was a spectacular day. No humidity and sunny with lots of fluffy white clouds. We first walked along a road with no sidewalks and saw cedar trees with branches heavy with their seeds. We peeked in through bushes at a lovely marsh and walked next

to bulrushes as high as an elephant’s eye. Yellow, pink and purple wildflowers filled both sides of the road, some low and vinelike while others were tall and swaying in the breeze. Then we headed over to the Lightfoot Trail, the entrance at the edge of the Severn Township and Orillia boundary. The Sumac and Mountain Ash were completely laden with their fruits of fall, rich red clusters and spectacular orange berries. Birds flitted in and out and around the cedars, maples and poplars as they delighted in the feast of berries that was theirs for the taking. They didn’t seem to mind sharing the forest with us at all. Only an hour later I was back home, back to work. Hunched over my computer scratching my head again as I tried to edit my own work. I checked on ads and returned phone calls. Doing the stuff I do to get this magazine ready for publication. The difference this time was that I felt energized and ready to tackle the task at hand. This proved to me, for the 3 millionth time in my life, that noticing and appreciating the little things in life is good. Getting off my duff and actually having a walk made me feel better. If only this lesson would stick with me. The cats, on the other hand, need no training. They enjoy every moment of every day. In fact, I think I just heard one of them say ‘aw, this is the life’.

Changes at Big Brothers Big Sisters It’s very likely that some of the kids in your own neighbourhood could tell you quite a bit about Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS). In fact, in spite of the relatively small population in Severn Township, this community is home to approximately 25% of all the children and youth served by the Orillia BBBS. Those children benefit greatly because the staff at BBBS are dedicated to the kids. Remarkably, volunteers, including mentors and administrative/organizational services, routinely clock 10,000+ hours a year. The positive relationships these children and youth form with their adult mentors will influence them for the rest of their lives. Every year, an average of 250 children are served in Orillia and surrounding townships. BBBS has been dedicated to the task at hand in this area for more than 50 years. Recently the Orillia-based organization announced the appointment of Lorie-Anne Roberts as the new executive director. She will lead three new hires: Deanna MacNeish, Intake Coordinator; Leah Kemp, Mentoring Coordinator, covering a parental leave; and

Darlene Jones, the Fundraising and Events Coordinator. “I am very excited to be working with an organization that makes such a valuable difference in young people’s lives,” said Lorie-Anne. “I look forward to continuing Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orillia’s success of fostering and supporting positive mentoring relationships for children.” BBBS has more than 50 years of service in Orillia and area with an eye to providing quality service. Because of this, BBBS is endorsed by more than 1,000 individuals annually, people who support the organization through donations and events such as the BBBS Bowl for Kids’ Sake, golf tournaments and more. “It’s always heartwarming to see donors, volunteers, and other organizations back us,” said Mehreen Shahid, the chair of the BBBS board of directors. “We hope to not only continue with the current partnerships, but also to build on other collaborations.” Every day BBBS staff and volunteers help children who are in vulnerable situations, who face adversities such as mental health

In Touch With Simcoe North

I

t’s been a distinct privilege to serve as your Member of Parliament since 2006. As the 5th generation of my family to make its livelihood here in Simcoe North, I’ve lived and worked here all my life. Heather and I raised our family here while running and growing our family resort business on Sparrow Lake. I began my public life by serving our community as a Municipal Councillor. My civic interests lead me to being an active member in Rotary Club, Resorts Ontario and involved in community volunteering. I am always impressed by how the people of our region appreciate even the smallest steps you take to help them. You are the most generous and civil a community as one could ever hope to represent. That is why I am proud to represent North Simcoe, each and every day. With your support on October 21, I look forward to continuing this important work.

Fun with pickleball Pickleball, growing in popularity in our community and beyond, has been played at the Washago Community Centre for the past few years. This year a tournament will be held, an event that will show off the skill of our local residents. Called the Washago Popsicle Stick Pickleball Tournament, and hosted by local volunteers Joanne and Glen Morehouse, it will take place on Wednesday, September 11th at 11:00 a.m. at the Washago Community Centre. If you’re not familiar with the game, almost anyone can learn to play, even master, and it’s one of the most affordable of all activities. Using strategy along with solid paddles to hit a perforated polymer ball over a net, the game includes elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. But it’s a soft game – no need to be a star athlete in order to participate or become proficient. Whether it’s a game or a sport seems to be up to personal interpretation but there’s no confusion among players who say it’s an excellent physical and mental exercise as well as just plain fun. The tournament has an entry fee of $5 for community centre members, $8 for non-members. The fee includes a BBQ. For more information, to pre-register or to volunteer to help run the BBQ, email morehousejoanne@gmail.com. By the time this article is published, the maximum of 32 players may have already registered but you are invited to drop by, sit in the bleachers and cheer the players on. You might come away with a desire to join the community centre’s enthusiastic group of pickleball players.

Township update NEW CAO Mayor and council are pleased to announce that effective August 15th, Laurie Kennard has assumed the role of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for Severn Township. Before coming to Severn, Laurie was the CAO for Georgian Bay Township for almost 6 years and before that was the Deputy CAO/Director of Finance for Springwater Township. “I knew a lot about Severn before coming here. And I knew many of the councillors” Laurie said. “Severn is similar to Georgian Bay Township in that it is large geographically with a many waterfront areas. The difference is that Severn seems to be a faster growing township with some unique challenges.” Priorities for the new CAO include helping to manage appropriate growth in the township – growth in the right area with the appropriate services. She’s also eager to look at modernization with electronic solutions, particularly when it comes to

communication with residents. Her hope is that council will agree to make hiring a communications specialist a priority. BUDGET Excluding volunteer firefighters, the township has approximately 50 staff, many of whom will be working directly with the new CAO on budget 2020. Mayor Mike Burkett said council will be taking a look at the first round in November. If there are organizations in the township hoping to have input, ask for grants or otherwise impact the budget in any way, now is the time to contact staff or your councillor. AIRBNB’S Residents in Sandcastle Estates south of Washago have been expressing deep concern about an Airbnb on Shoreview Drive, explaining that short-term tenants have been responsible for excessive noise, large parties, and general disrespect for other residents. CAO Laurie Kennard held a meeting with effected residents. She included an OPP inspector in the meeting. The residents were glad to have had the chance to meet with officials. They know that neither the township nor OPP can do anything more

than enforce laws and by-laws. “Residents should be assured that we’ll continue to work towards a solution. Licensing Airbnb’s could be a possibility but communities that have done this don’t see improvement (to the problems). Can bad behaviour be legislated? Will they simply pay a fine and carry on?” said the CAO. She added that currently there are 70 registered Airbnb’s in Severn Township and, luckily, the Shoreview Drive residence is the only one they know of that is creating ongoing problems for residents. . WESTSHORE COMMUNITY CENTRE There has been a little bit of progress on the community centre in Westshore. The 10acre site will be half-filled and then allowed to settle before filling the balance. It’s part of the process required because of the lay of the land. As the mayor told The Villager some months ago, this project has been fraught with delays and disappointment. Council understands the need for the centre and will keep working with the developer to move it forward. Details about all costs and building plans will be included in the 2020 budget.

Serving seniors in Simcoe North By Jill Dunlop, MPP Simcoe North

As the summer draws to an end we gear up for all that fall brings to our region fall fairs, events and of course our Annual Seniors Day Event. This year’s seniors’ event will be held at the Coldwater Arena, September 20th from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and promises to be engaging and entertaining for seniors in Simcoe North. Our combined Midland/Orillia one-day event will host close to 40 vendors, guest speakers and a complimentary lunch. This summer I had the pleasure of meeting many new and familiar faces and was inspired by our seniors who continue to remain active and live independently in our age-friendly communities that encourage full participation. Yet many seniors face challenges finding support for their mental health and well-being. With an estimated 17-30% of older adults suffering from a mental health disorder, Ontario’s

government is protecting what matters most by supporting the development of a senior mental health and addictions educational program. Components of the program will include resource materials and a workshop series that will help educate seniors on common risk factors and prevention strategies, signs and symptoms of mental health and addiction issues, and how to access appropriate supports. The program will be delivered across the province in early 2020 by facilitators with expertise in mental health and additions in community settings such as Seniors Active Living Centres. The active seniors that call Simcoe North home are sure to have contributed to the birth of the term “seenager” with their energy and enthusiasm. The government is also working towards the launch of the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program. The program will benefit

Ontarians aged 65+ with an income of $19,300 per year or less, or couples with a combined annual income of $32,300 or less, who do not have other dental benefits. The services will be accessed through public health units, community health centres and Aboriginal Health Access Centres across the province. Once launched, seniors can get an application from the ministry’s website or public health unit. Each application will be assessed, and eligible clients will be enrolled in the program. Add you name to our list for launch updates by contacting our constituency office. It is my continued goal to serve the constituents of Simcoe North and I look forward to a great Senior’s Day on September 20/19.

Neighbourhood eatery has new owner As of May 1st this year, Diana Roman is the new owner of what was The Washago Village Restaurant. The restaurant is officially called Blue Moon Junction. Watch for the signs to change. The restaurant building is iconic. Cottagers stop there on the way north, or on the way home. Locals have made it their go-to spot for years, and Lake St. George or Evergreen golfers include this restaurant as part of the day’s outing. Of course, Diana will make changes to the restaurant – to the décor and the menu. As owner of the successful Lake Country Grill in Orillia for the past 6 years, she has a lot of experience in the industry and knows how to attract diners. But she’ll make changes slowly and thoughtfully. “The previous owner was well-liked and known in the community as someone who valued his customers. He was careful to keep menu item favourites year after year. My goal is to add to the eating experience, not take away what regular customers have come to enjoy,” she said. However, the building is old and there are challenges. Diana said she has already started upgrading some of the infrastructure, things that customers don’t necessarily notice but will go a long way to improving the bones of the building. It’s her first order of business. But for someone who has exceptional energy and imagination, she can’t help thinking ahead: what might she add to the menu; will she have regular evening entertainment such as karaoke, trivia games, and paint nights; maybe she’ll expand the parking lot and add a dog run so customers can relax and eat while their dogs are safe. Her list of ideas doesn’t stop. “My goal is to make the Blue Moon Junction the local “Cheers”. Great food, cold drinks, a gathering place for locals and a necessary stop for travelers,” she said. “It will all happen in time,” she said. “The location of this restaurant is perfect. The building itself is so well known. I think I have a great combination of things to create a successful new business.” In time Diana is confident that she will make the Blue Moon Junction the place to go “where everybody knows your name”.

Experience local nature By Courtney Baker, Couchiching Conservancy I have just returned from a camping trip with my sister and nieces. It was their first time camping. It was so special. For me, it was an opportunity to share part of our beautiful, nearby natural environments and go home with some wonderful experiences. Time spent in the quiet refuge of nature is something I’m used to so it’s easy for me to forget how stimulating it can be. Time in nature gives me the opportunity to think about and be grateful for all that we have and to digest good thoughts that a busy life sometimes sets aside. My sister, a city girl through and through, commented on how easy it was to unplug and relax, for her and her girls. The toys and games brought to our camp site were mostly set aside. Amazing how kids are happy with sticks and stones and all the other things that nature offers. We saw deer and a weasel, had a resident chipmunk and we picked wild blueberries. My nieces tried to identify bird songs with me. We cooked and ate our meals together. With beautiful nature surrounding us and few demands, we had happy times. I am grateful to live in a province where we can do this. I am even more grateful to work for a land trust that partners with Ontario Parks and other organizations to maintain healthy wildlife havens, to create corridors of thriving wilderness giving us spaces where we can truly celebrate what it means to be a part of the wider more biodiverse world. To ensure we always have these opportunities,The Couchiching Conservancy is launching a new campaign to help protect

even more pristine land in our region. We call it the Black River Wildlands Corridor Campaign. The campaign is centred on the fact that linking natural spaces is the best way we can fight habitat and species loss in our region. Many animals in southern Ontario need room to roam. They need connections to different areas throughout the four seasons. To help with that and to continue to see biodiversity here, we must take action to provide that space. The conservancy helps with that. Within the heart of the Queen Elizabeth II Provincial Park, The Black River Wildlands Corridor has been carefully mapped and developed. It extends South to Kawartha Lakes and the Carden Alvar; to the north to Algonquin Park; and Georgian Bay to the west. By managing the natural resources close to where we live, The Couchiching Conservancy helps to create a link between private and public natural spaces. It allows us to have a huge range of diversity and provides homes for species at risk, large and small mammals and all types of plants and insects and more. Take even an hour, every once in a while, to explore a small portion of our region and you’ll find that human beings also belong in nature, just like every other creature and just like my nieces did on our camping trip. Unwind and explore the living planet right down the road from where you live. Support our work to protect The Black River Wildlands Corridor. Visit http:// www.couchichingconserv.ca/black-riverwildlands-corridor/ to learn more.

Get to know the federal election candidates

21

There are only about 50 days for federal candidates to make their case - and for you to decide who will get your vote. On the following 4 pages you’ll read a little about four of the candidates vying to be your Simcoe North Member of Parliament: Christian Heritage Party; Liberal Party; People’s Party of Canada; and Progressive Conservatives. Our plan is to provide more information in October - about these four parties and their platforms, along with the parties who were unable to meet our deadline for this issue. In the meantime, most candidates have comprehensive information on social media and their websites and most campaign offices will be open by early September. A good resource for general election information is run by Elections Canada. Visit elections.ca and you’ll find voter eligibility criteria, registration details and riding information. It’s as simple as plugging in your postal code and you’ll be on your way to making sure you’re all set to cast your vote. Continued on page 22

CHRISTIAN HERITAGE PARTY Chris Brown I firmly believe that the freedoms of speech and of the press are vital components of a healthy culture, and that without them, many of the additional freedoms we enjoy would be in jeopardy. I thank The Villager for their commitment to these time honoured traditions. All of the policies of the Christian Heritage Party (CHP) reflect and encompass the high value we place on all our cherished freedoms. One of the policies that reflect the CHP’s core beliefs is the matter of the “Income Tax Act”. It was originally slated as a temporary measure to support Canadian war efforts in World War I. We believe that the elimination of this Act and the introduction of a more balanced “FAIR TAX”, purchased-based system would allow Canadians to keep more of their hard-earned dollars. Moreover, this would increase average household net income dramatically and provide financial

options and freedoms to our families never before seen in our lifetimes. The CHP advocates for Canada to be governed according to Christian principles. The party’s stated principle is that the purpose of civil government is to ensure security, freedom, and justice for all its citizens from conception till natural death, by upholding just laws. CHP states that, if the party forms government, it hopes to apply proven Judeo-Christian principles of justice and compassion to Canada’s contemporary public policy needs. My candidacy gives an opportunity to those who believe as the Christian Heritage Party does and to cast your vote for Chris Brown. Please contact ChrisBrownCHP@hotmail. com with any questions you may have about my candidacy or the Christian Heritage Party.

LIBERAL PARTY OF CANADA Gerry Hawes A lifelong resident of Orillia, Gerry Hawes is in tune with the hopes and needs of the people of Simcoe North. For many years, he served as Executive Assistant to our former Liberal Member of Parliament, Paul DeVillers. Gerry is an accomplished public policy professional who advised two provincial ministers and served as a Senior Policy Advisor in government, developing supports for the cultural industries such as publishing, and live and recorded music. Gerry took an unpaid leave from that work to dedicate himself full-time to becoming our next Member of Parliament. With this background, Gerry can navigate government, open doors, and make things happen for the people of Simcoe North. Gerry grew up in a lower income, blue collar family. They didn’t have much, but he credits his parents for working hard and being good role models, instilling in him and his siblings the values of fairness, equity and inclusion. Gerry’s brother became a police officer, his sister a soldier, and Gerry charted a career mainly in roles with a social mission. This background formed the caring adult that Gerry is today, molded his outlook on life, and it is why he is politically progressive. Gerry is a key player behind the renowned Mariposa Folk Festival. In recognition of Gerry’s leadership in this organization over the past 20 years, he was inducted into the Mariposa Hall of Fame. Gerry is bilingual in French and English. His spouse of thirty years, Ambrose Doucette, who is Indigenous, was raised in a military family on bases in Canada and Germany and enjoys a successful career in retail. One of Gerry’s key strengths is his ability to work constructively with people from all walks of life, of differing social and economic echelons, and across party lines. Also, Gerry never gives up pursuing what is right and what needs to be done. He is a decisive and inclusive leader, qualities we need in a local representative, and qualities that will serve our community well when Gerry is elected as our Member of Parliament.

PEOPLE’S PARTY OF CANADA Stephen Makk

Stephen Makk, a professional engineer, is your People’s Party of Canada (PPC) candidate for Simcoe North in the upcoming federal election. As a business owner, Stephen knows how to mobilize the energies of a team to serve his clients. Stephen would serve the people of Simcoe North with energy, honesty, and dedication.

As your representative in Ottawa this October, Stephen Makk will pursue the issues that matter most to the people of Simcoe North. His approach centers on civic engagement. Stephen will solicit your input, concerns, and ideas—then go to bat for you with practical solutions. He and the PPC believe that a smaller but wellrun government means more freedom for everyone. When government gets pushed back, you can move forward. The PPC would concentrate on the basics, and get them right. Stephen was born in Canada and earned an engineering degree at the University of Toronto. He and Riina, his wife and business partner, live in Victoria Harbour with two adult sons. Stephen has transformed Victoria Harbour’s former town hall into a high-tech office and laboratory—while preserving its atmosphere and charm. That approach sums up Stephen’s philosophy as Simcoe North’s future representative—someone

with one eye on cherished traditions and the other on the newly possible. Like Maxime Bernier and the PPC, Stephen Makk supports free speech and diversity of thought. Stephen considers every citizen’s free expression to be both a right and an obligation. The PPC will strive to make Canada a place where nobody fears speaking his/her mind, or hearing the ideas of others. Stephen supports a free market economy and opposes corporate welfare. He and the PPC champion freedom of the individual, as opposed to privileges for special interest groups. Stephen is a proponent of lower and simpler taxation, leaving you more freedom to pursue your life your way. When Stephen encountered Maxime Bernier and his People’s Party of Canada, he said, “Now here is something I can get behind!” As the PPC representative for Simcoe North, he’s inviting you to do the same.

CONSERVATIVE PARTY OF CANADA Bruce Stanton

My party and leader Andrew Scheer offer a well-thought-out vision on the key issues facing our country. Earlier this year, Andrew set out his broad policy commitments in five areas; foreign affairs, energy and the economy, immigration, environment and uniting the federation. You can see it at www. myvisionforcanada.ca. I will summarize a

few of the key points. On Foreign Affairs and Defence, Canada will partner strategically to advance freedom while contributing to global peace and security in the decades ahead. We will renew our sovereignty with a reinvigorated national defence – so Canada will be both ready when called on and able to stand strong with our allies in the defence of freedom, human rights and the rule of law. On Energy and the Economy, the fact is, Canada has more than enough oil – not only to stop importing oil but to put an end to all foreign oil imports. That is part of Andrew’s vision: Canada fueled exclusively by Canadians by 2030. We will balance the budget responsibly within five years, leaving Canadians with more money in their pockets. On uniting the federation, we will undertake a government-wide effort to remove the interprovincial trade barriers that have held back our federation for so long and negotiate a new Interprovincial

Free Trade Agreement. On Immigration, we will work to immediately restore fairness, order, and compassion in our immigration system and do more to promote private sponsorships of refugees. On the Environment, our plan will focus on green technology, not taxes. Canadians will be eligible to receive a 20% refundable credit on their income tax for green improvements to their homes. We will reinstate funding for wetlands, watersheds, and fisheries conservation and we will take the climate change fight GLOBAL. Greenhouse gas emissions do not recognize borders. Our plan starts by exporting our environmental excellence to help reduce the emissions of the world’s biggest emitters. You can judge for yourself at www.ARealPlan.ca I respectfully ask for your support on Election Day, October 21, 2019.

A country truly blessed By Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton

As this will be my last opportunity to speak to constituents through this column until after the October 21st federal election, I would first like to extend my appreciation to publisher Ellen Cohen and staff of The Villager for permitting me to convey these updates in my role as your M.P. Local journalism is vitally important and The Villager serves the community and their readers exceptionally well with local news, culture and community events. It is always my hope that my articles here will bring helpful information and clarity on issues of federal responsibility. I also wish to thank the many readers that have followed the articles and provided me with feedback. We approach an important federal election that provides all voting Canadians with a voice into the kind of government

and the kinds of priorities that they feel best serves their interests and those of the country as a whole. There are many issues before us in the election ahead. Keeping our economy strong so that job opportunities, better incomes and chances to get ahead are more plentiful; Canada’s energy economy and questions around the exporting of our energy products (just as vital to us here in eastern Canada); climate change and its complex consequences for our environment, security and economy; the changing reality of migration and immigration, and keeping our country united and protecting our sovereignty, among many. While we have much work ahead to ensure that Canada lives up to the promise and possibilities of the future, we can also feel grateful for the peace, order and security

HERE WE GROW AGAIN!!! New Products • More Inventory • Better Parking

Visit us at our new location in the Laclie Plaza

400 Laclie Street, Orillia

• Quality vacuums & central vacuum systems • Extensive inventory of lamp shades • Vacuum repairs and expert lamp restoration/repairs

that is our greatest accomplishment as a country. In many places around the world, democratic elections are deeply flawed and suspect in their integrity. There are other places where violent political protests and civil unrest are more the norm than the exception. We are truly blessed in the integrity and independence of our electoral process and that regardless of the outcome, the results will be respected. When the election is over Canadians will rightfully expect parliamentarians to go forward and deliver on the commitments they made. There is plenty of good information on the Elections Canada website, www. elections.ca about ensuring you’re on the voters list, as well as dates and options for voting. Thank you.
