Vintage Craft Corner...SUN PRINTS
Have you ever seen a blue photograph? If you lived in the 1800s you would have. By placing objects on special paper and exposing the paper to sunlight, early photographers created blue images, called cyanotypes or sun prints.
The process was also used for copying architectural plans called blueprints. Architects drew their plans in ink on very thin paper, then placed the drawings against blueprint paper and left them in the sun. The light was blocked in the places that had ink but passed through where there was no ink. When the blueprint paper was washed in clear water, the plans appeared as white lines on blue paper. Want to learn how to make a cyanotype? It’s easy! Arrange feathers, leaves, keys or anything with a well-defined shape directly onto a piece of sun-print paper, available at most photo supply stores or Web sites. Then leave your work of art in the sun. After several minutes, remove the objects, and then rinse the paper in water. The places where objects were placed will stay white, while the sun-exposed parts will turn blue.

REPURPOSING IDEAS: Recover a traditional leather sofa with a fun, graphic print for a modern look. Refinish dresser drawers, line their insides with pretty paper, and mount them on the wall for bookshelves. Paint and shellac two old end tables for new night stands. Even if the tables are different, a common paint color will unify the look. Paint an old cabinet panel and add drawer pulls on each end for a new serving tray. Replace the broken glass on your grandmother’s china cabinet with chicken wire for a shabby-chic storage unit. Mount an old door to a bedroom wall (horizontally) for a unique headboard. Cover a dresser or buffet with a slab of remnant granite or marble for a new kitchen island. Paint some picture frames and fill them with old pieces of fabric, aprons or cork. Voila!! Instant art or a corkboard for displaying pictures. 19

How to Stain Furniture Choosing a Stain If you are refinishing furniture, you are almost certainly going to be using stain to achieve the color you desire and to reduce the contrasts between different wood varieties which may have been used in the construction of the furniture. There are several different types of stains and dyes which may be used to color wood. Oil-Based Stain Liquid oil-based stains penetrate into the wood without raising the wood grain. They are permanent, and when properly used, yield very good results. The color can be darkened by multiple applications and by lengthening the time the stain is allowed to penetrate the wood. These stains do have a strong odor and must be cleaned up with mineral spirit type solvents. Water-Based Stains Liquid water-based stains are more environmentally friendly than traditional oil-based products. As with oil-based stains, you can deepen the color of the stain with multiple applications. Water-based stains are convenient and require only a soap and water cleanup. The major drawback of waterbased products is the fact that they can raise the grain of the wood. To minimize this possibility, dampen the wood with a moist rag. Allow the wood to dry completely, and finish sand again with fine sandpaper. Then, repeat the process. This conditions the wood to accept the water-based products with less raised grain. Gel Stains Unlike liquid stains, gels are thick. They are usually oil-based, and allow excellent color control because of the thickness of the stain. They do not swell the wood grain, and cannot run like liquid stains. They do require that the wood piece be buffed between coats to remove any residual stain. One Step Stain/Finishes One step stain/finishes are popular because of their ease of use. After all, the color and finish are applied to the piece at the same time, eliminating several steps and possibly several hours of work. It can be more difficult to achieve a very good finish with these products. The finish itself is tinted, so the color lies on top of the wood instead of being absorbed into it like penetrating stain. Thicker areas of finish will therefore have more color than thinner areas. Brush marks against the grain or other surface imperfections will be more evident in the final finish. Also, these finishes are less transparent and may obscure desirable grain characteristics. Applying Stains Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the product you are using. In general, liquid stains are applied with a rag or brush and allowed to penetrate into the wood. The longer the stain is allowed to penetrate, the darker the color will be. This only works to a certain extent, however. The excess stain is then wiped off with a clean rag and the piece is allowed to dry. If a darker finish is desired, these steps are repeated. Ariel’s Shopping TIps 1. Map out a route of the shops you want to visit. This will help you save time and money. 2. Shop often. The more you visit, the more likely you are to find exactly what you are looking for. Many shops have a fast turnover of their most interesting items. 3. Canvass every corner! Don’t just breeze through and glance at items. Recently I was shopping with a Carolina fan and she ran through the shop quickly and went outside to wait. Later on I walked out with a fabulous Carolina collectible. She was really surprised. I gave it to her along with my tip number three. 4. Have a little cash handy. Some shops don’t accept credit cards or checks, so make sure you have cash on hand to make that spontaneous purchase. You know the one I am talking about. You finally find that chicken alarm clock that you just can’t live without. 5. Keep a size chart handy in your bag. Include family members, your best friend, etc. Bring along color swatches and your tape measure. 6. Always check the the items in the glass showcase. This is where you can often find some of the best bargains. 7. When you see something you absolutely adore, grab it! Chances are it won’t be there the next time you visit. In my early shopping days I missed many treasures by hesitating. My greatest loss was an autographed photograph of Great Garbo. 8. Let the shop owner and staff know what type of items you are looking for. Often they will give you a call when something comes in that they think you are interested in. If the shop has a mailing list, sign up for their notices on sales and special event invitations.

GREEN LIVING TIPS PLANT A GARDEN
Growing food yourself saves money, plus it cuts down on the energy used to mass produce and transport food. If you don’t have a green thumb, help organize a community garden or, at the least, buy your food from local farmers.
SAVE WATER
Wait until your washer is full. Don’t run your dishwasher or washing machine until it’s full. Reduce energy consumption by hanging your clothes to dry. Put on a timer for showers Limit showers to just five minutes for everyone in your family. Install low-flow, watersaving showerheads.
CLEAN GREEN
Be eco-friendly by eliminating the use of toxic chemicals in your home. Believe it or not, you can make natural cleaning 28
solutions from salt, baking soda and vinegar that are tough on dirt and grime. Window cleaner - 3 tablespoons of vinegar to one gallon of water Oven cleaner - Add table salt directly to baked-on food while your oven is warm, then wipe away Bathroom cleanser - 2 tablespoons of baking soda to one quart of warm water All-purpose cleaner - 2:1 solution of water and vinegar, plus a squirt of lemon juice
SAVE ENERGY
Switch to energy-efficient appliances. Replace traditional light bulbs with CFLs. Invest in a programmable thermostat (only heat/cool your house when you are home). Turn off your computer when you aren’t using it. Organize a carpool for your office.
