s I write this I have just returned from the first Lark in the Park event in Station Road Gardens. What a fabulous event: lovely weather (but not too hot!) and lots of people simply relaxing in groups on the grass listening to some superb music from the various singers and bands while enjoying picnics. Talking to organiser Jane Cross, plans are already in place to hold the event again in 2018. The big event for August is of course the Loxwood Joust. If you have still to sample this mediaeval mayhem you have been missing out! A superb event. See page 42. Grahame Cover: Yes, it’s Joust time! And, due to popular demand the event is to be held over two weekends again. Fowlers’ ongoing support of Wisborough Green Farmers’ Market Always keen to support the local community, Fowlers are one of the main sponsors of the Wisborough Green Farmers’ Market, held in the Wisborough Green village hall on the second Thursday of every month. The Farmers’ Market recently celebrated its 15th birthday and the photo shows all those who relentlessly give their precious time and skills to make the event so successful, with a varied range of local suppliers supplying a wide range of produce. Fowlers have been one of the principal supporters of the Farmers’ Market for some time now, and Keith Hutchinson, Director of Fowlers Billingshurst, was very pleased to be present at such an enjoyable and worthwhile occasion. Lefties! / Bouncy castles / Private hire
Look Left! International Left-Handers’ Day is on 13th August
T
he 13th of August is International LeftHanders’ Day. Launched in 1992, it is now an annual event where lefthanders everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality (that’s the posh word for lefthandedness) and increase public awareness of the disadvantages of being left-handed (like scissors… conventional scissors are made for righties, a fact which made my primary school years in the less-enlightened 1970s somewhat frustrating), and also the advantages, because there are quite a few… In many sports for instance, we ‘lefties’ seem to have an advantage. Left-footed soccer players and tennis players find it easy to wrong-foot an opponent. A right-handed player is used to ‘like-
handed’ opponents who play a similar game. A lefty will have faced more right-handers and thus be used to their ‘opposite’ style of play. We’re also more creative, possibly due to the way our brains are wired: the left half of the brain, which controls the right hand, is also responsible for speech, language, writing, logic and numerical thinking. The right half, which controls the left hand, is also responsible for music, art, creativity, perception, spatial awareness and emotions. I’ve learned to embrace my left-handedness over the years. It’s part of who I am and I’m pleased to announce that since I purchased a pair of left-handed scissors I can now cut out neat paper shapes with the best of them! Sarah Davey

Veggie Burgers METHOD
Who needs meat?
Prep time: 20-30 minutes. Cooking time: 20-30 minutes. Makes 6 burgers.
1. Heat half the sunflower oil in a pan over a low heat and fry the onions for 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until they are softened, translucent and beginning to turn golden-brown. 2. In a bowl, mix together the cooked onions, tofu, beetroot, mushrooms, carrots, smoked paprika (if using), garlic, thyme and kidney beans. Season to taste, with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 3. Divide the mixture into six equal portions and shape into burgers. It’s easier to do this if your hands are a little damp. 4. Heat the remaining olive oil in a frying pan and fry the burgers for 3-4 minutes on each side, until goldenbrown. You can finish cooking them for a few more minutes and serve them like this but I prefer to heat a griddle pan until smoking hot, then add the cooked burgers and fry for a further 1-2 minutes on each side, until there are clear deep char lines. 5. Serve the burgers in buns and add any extras of your choice, such as tomato slices, gherkins, chargrilled peppers, salad leaves, coleslaw or mayonnaise.
INGREDIENTS 3-4 tbsp sunflower oil 1 onion, peeled, thinly sliced 250g/9oz firm tofu, finely chopped 1 cooked beetroot (not in vinegar), peeled, grated 150g/5½oz fried mushrooms, drained 1 carrot, peeled, grated 1 tsp smoked paprika (optional) 1 garlic clove, peeled, crushed 1 tsp chopped fresh thyme 1 tbsp chopped kidney beans salt and freshly ground black pepper To serve 6 burger buns 6 tbsp ready-made mayonnaise (optional) 3 beefsteak tomatoes, thickly sliced 2-3 gherkins, sliced

he Billingshurst Show went ‘Down on the Farm’ on Sunday 25th June as large crowds enjoyed the farm-themed Carnival Procession and a full programme of activities and attractions at the Recreation Ground in Billingshurst. Leading the Carnival Procession were Carnival Princess Heidi Sillett with her attendant Amy Wright, followed by flower girls Tulisa-Jane Harris, Pippa Carnival Princess Heidi Sillett Zarins-Funnell and Sophia Oates. BBC Radio Sussex reporter Nicky Patrick was on hand, reporting in to Sylvie Blackmore’s lunchtime show, and also to judge the winners of the Carnival Procession. Her vote went to Billingshurst Brownies & Rainbows, with WAKOOS Centre4Children second, and Dauxwood Pre-School third. Carnival Princess Heidi Sillett then declared the show open. WAKOOS float In the main arena the crowds were served up a double helping of streaky bacon in the form of the show’s very first pig races, interspersed with bouts of medieval mayhem from the Knights of Loxwood and more brute force courtesy of the Scouts & Guides Tug of War. Literally the biggest attraction in the arena however was John Fry’s superb bull, Moonshine. Horsham Bluebelles returned for a display of baton twirling, and VMA Dance from Rudgwick made their Heavy metal! welcome debut at the show. Music bands included Petworth Band, the Seaford
College Jazz Band and Shipwrecked. Other attractions included the everpopular Fun Dog Show, donkey rides, a climbing wall, Punch and Judy, the Great Billingshurst Bake Off complete with Star Baker, the regular Food & Craft Market and a wide range of slides, rides and stalls. Paul Starkey from the Billingshurst Show Organising Committee said, “It was another great day and we were delighted with the large turnout. There Professor Chris was plenty for everyone to enjoy, and fortunately the weather was again perfect for the show as we managed to avoid the recent heatwave. “I’d like to thank our Principal Sponsors Allpower, Coco’s, Cubitt & West, The Fat Cow, Fowlers, Harwoods, McVeigh Parker, Mole Country Stores, Optimise and Slinfold Golf & Country Club for their support in helping us stage the show. Thanks also to everyone who helped bring the show together on the day and in the Stephen Foster days and weeks beforehand when all the planning takes place. A special thanks also to Nicky Patrick from BBC Radio Sussex for coming along and being such a great judge for us, we really appreciated it. “As well as providing a fun day out for everyone, the show is an important fundraising event, and we’re expecting to have raised around £10,000 for local Scouts & Guides and Rotary charities. We look forward to next year’s show on Sunday 24th June!” Dog Show cutie Paul Starkey

Billingshurst Show & Carnival High Street Shop Window Competition
O
nce again the Billingshurst Show returned on 25th June, along with the competition for Billingshurst’s high street businesses to create a window display on the show’s theme. This year the theme was ‘Down on the Farm’, with a range of great entries. After being judged by members of the organising team there was a case of a tie for first place. The joint first prize display from Park and Brown Optometrists was contributed to by clients and staff to create some scenes depicting aspects of farm life, from a large crop field to a duck pond and hay barn. A lot of work had clearly gone in to creating all the individual vegetables growing in the field. The other entry that drew with this display was the one created by the Age UK charity shop. This made use of donations and items made by staff and their families. What made it stand out particularly to the judges was that the display contained facts about the different animals so it was educational as well Age UK charity shop
looking effective. The stars of this window were ‘Ermintrude’ the cow and the pig in his pen. Both of these entries received a cup to display in their windows. The final window to win a prize was Austen’s Home Hardware. Their’s was an artistic display rather than a specific farming scene. However, it utilised items sold in the shop creating a rustic, countryside atmosphere. The cups and certificates were presented by Glyn Pullen representing Billingshurst Scouts and Guides and Durwin Banks, President of Billingshurst & District Rotary Club representing Rotary, the two organisations who jointly run the Billingshurst Show. All that remains is to say thank you and well done to all the businesses that entered with particular congratulations to all the winners. Billingshurst Rotary & Billingshurst Scouts and Guides look forward to another stunning range of displays for next year’s show. Laura Parker Austen’s Home Hardware

Walkers bring in £10,000 for canal restoration
P
eople strolling in the countryside and visiting historic locations have raised around £10,000 to help bring a 19th century waterway back to life. Their enjoyable expedition supported the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT), which is carrying out a number of restoration projects. The money was amassed by 150 people who took part in the charity’s annual fundraising walk, the Poddle, at the beginning of June. “We are delighted with the money raised for the canal restoration fund,” said walk organiser Margaret Darvill. “With Gift Aid added, the final proceeds from the Poddle will be about £10,000. The trust is really grateful to the people who sponsored our walkers and our thanks go to all those who completed the Poddle and to those who helped with the organisation and on the day.” The Poddle supports the restoration of ‘London’s Lost Route to the Sea’, a 23-mile waterway which ran from the River Arun at Pallingham in West Sussex to the River Wey at Shalford in Surrey. This year’s walkers followed a 12-mile route around the Arun Valley, starting and finishing at Ingfield Manor School at Five Oaks, north of Billingshurst, with lunch at Wisborough Green Scout Hut. The route included the canal from Loves Bridge, past Rowner Lock – the site of
the first volunteer working party on the canal – to Lordings, where walkers were able to see a unique waterwheel and a restored aqueduct. WACT is currently putting the finishing touches to its first major restoration scheme in Surrey, the new £700,000 Compasses Bridge at the Alfold entrance to the Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex. Around 1¼ miles of waterway are planned to be open to navigation by small boats by the end of this year, adding to the 3½ miles of fully operational waterway at Loxwood. If you would like to support the restoration, donations can be made via the home page of www.weyandarun.co.uk; or by sending a cheque made out to the Wey & Arun Canal Trust to Compasses Appeal, WACT Northern Office, Bridge End, Somerswey, Shalford, Guildford, Surrey GU4 8EQ. The Trust asks that eligible donors Gift Aid their donation, which adds 25p from the Government to every £1 – declaration forms available via the website if required. Star supporters step out for St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk
T
he streets of Horsham were aglow with a sea of orange and neon as more than 900 women, men and children stepped out under the stars as part of St Catherine’s Hospice 10th anniversary Midnight Walk on Saturday 10th June, sponsored by Gatwick Airport. Broadbridge Heath, the starting point for the walk, was buzzing as people came together to raise money for the charity which cares for local people facing death and bereavement. Walkers were treated to goody bags, an energising warm-up by Alex Duffy, a musical performance from the Horsham Rock Choir, and rousing speeches from Head of Community Engagement at Gatwick Airport, Alison Addy, and St Catherine’s Chief Executive, Giles Tomsett, before being sent out to pound the pavements. With glow sticks to help light their way, walkers enjoyed one of three brand new 7-, 13- and 20-mile walking loops through the streets of Horsham, including stop-offs at The Holbrook Club for refreshments, and St Mary’s Church where people lit a candle in memory of someone special. Wendy Buckingham from Surrey took part in this year’s walk for the first time, with a team of 12 family and friends, in memory of her husband, Ken who was cared for by St Catherine’s. They walked seven miles. After the walk Wendy said, “The best part was the camaraderie. All the
people I walked with have supported the girls and I since we lost Ken. The marshals and volunteers were amazing; they kept us going and it was lovely to have the beautiful St Mary’s Church open to stop and light a candle. Walking as a family and having my girls take part for their Daddy has been amazing.” After completing their walking challenge people were welcomed back by cheering hospice staff who congratulated them with a well deserved medal and breakfast. Hannah Shorter, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “What a way to celebrate our 10th Midnight Walk anniversary! With so many people coming out to support St Catherine’s we had an unforgettable night. There was a brilliant buzz from start to finish, and we would like to thank every single person who took part for giving up sleep to step out under the stars. We’d also like to thank our sponsors, Gatwick Airport, for their help, energy and enthusiasm into the early hours, and all our volunteer marshals, whose fantastic support kept walkers going throughout the night. We hope everyone enjoyed the night as much as we did!” To find out more about how you can take part in future challenges for St Catherine’s, please visit www.stch.org.uk. Sussex Green Living in Carnival Mood
T
he Billingshurst Carnival Procession saw a new addition this year from Sussex Green Living, keen to share their vision of a cleaner, greener world. Over 30 supporters wearing green clothes, flower garlands and carrying banners reading ‘Safe Water Zone’ and ‘Clean Fields not Oil Fields’ marched alongside cyclists, an electric car and local environmentalist Nicola Peel in her biodiesel van. Organiser Carrie Cort said, “I was really pleased with how people from the community came together today, some just from a post on Facebook. Our procession aimed to raise awareness about the future we want for our children, grandchildren and future generations. One of the children said to me, ‘Being in the carnival was very exciting and loud. I am pleased I did it because everyone in the town heard our message about the cleaner, greener future we want’ . In the Show field, Sussex Green Living had a stall sharing information on recycling, renewable energy and the UK Oil and Gas (UKOG) site on Adversane Lane, just outside Billingshurst. (Also see page 41. Ed.) Exploratory drilling has begun at the site, despite local oppostion. Over 120 concerned residents, Parish and District Councillors and campaigners recently met at a public meeting at West Chiltington Village Hall to
hear speakers including hydro-geologist Graham Warren and Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Tony Whitbread share their opposition to the site. Of major concern is UKOG’s belief that there is no wildlife near the site, which could be affected by 24-hour drilling; the faulted geology of the Weald, which could lead to contaminants reaching the water supply if any leaks occur underground; and the fact that the taxpayers will pay for any clean up if there is an accident. UKOG say what they do is 100% safe, but is anything that safe where humans, chemicals and machinery are involved? Any threat, however small, to our precious water supply has to be questioned and scrutinised, and it’s the public not the politicians who are leading this. If you have any questions or want to find out more on this please go to www.frackfreebillingshurst.com and to learn how you can live a greener life please go to www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk. Why not come along to Cake at the Gate, at the UKOG site gates on Adversane Lane, daily from 11am. Bring cake! Emily Anderson Sussex Green Living Photo: Alan Wright Photography

A Good Read August’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Shtum – Jem Lester “I love you, Jonah, but sometimes I wish you had never been born.” For most parents this would be an unthinkable phrase to utter. But Ben is desperate. He doesn’t mean it, of course, but the thought is there, uttered only when his 10-year-old son is asleep. Even if Jonah heard he wouldn’t say anything. Jonah doesn’t say anything. Jonah is nonverbal. He has autism. This is not your Rain Man depiction of autism where Jonah is a gifted child in at least one area. He has the mental age of a toddler and his parents have reached the end of the road. He is about to make the transition to secondary school and Ben and Emma are convinced that he would be better off in a residential specialist school. The local authority doesn’t agree and this is where the novel starts. Two parents battling to get the best for their son, and battling to communicate with each other. This is a brutally honest look at the highs and lows of parenting a child with autism. The author, Jem Lester, should know what it is like as he is father to a child just like Jonah. But Shtum is also a story about an adult son trying to repair his relationship with his aging
father. Geog is a Holocaust survivor and has kept his past hidden from Ben. It is his conversations with Jonah that allow him to open up and Ben has to come to terms with the fact that his father won’t open up to him. It would seem that Jonah, who has the least to say, will be the one that teaches the adults in his life to live, love, and forgive. Gladiator Boy vs The Raging Torrent – David Grimstone Decimus Rex, the hero of this series, was captured by slave-takers in Italy and taken to Rome to compete in the gladiator arena. Along with his cell-mates he is determined to escape and after a series of trials they manage to escape their captor, Slavious Doom. But this is only the start of their troubles as they find themselves in one quest after another. This is the eighth book in the Gladiator Boy series and it leaps right in where the previous book left off. Decimus, Olu, Ruma, and Gladius are sailing across the seas to China to rescue their friend Teo. But when they arrive in Yelang they find none other than Slavious who challenges them to survive the water maze. This is a great series for young readers and this instalment is no exception. From attacks by Japanese Ninjas to a water-filled maze with encroaching walls this is sure to be one that readers will not want to put down.

Weald students celebrate leavers’ prom on the Thames
Y
ear 11 Weald students marked another successful year by celebrating their annual leavers’ prom on Thursday 29th June by cruising down the River Thames on the Erasmus. The students looked fabulous in their attire as they arrived in a variety of vehicles including limousines and sports cars. They travelled up to London via coach passing the many historical sites before being dropped off at Blackfriars Pier. On boarding the boat, they were greeted with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and a delicious buffet. Both students and staff danced the night away in the disco until the early hours of Friday morning. The highlight of the night was
undoubtedly Mr Woodman’s solo dance performance to When the going gets tough by Billy Ocean. From the open top deck of the boat, Big Ben, London Bridge and the London Eye were all clearly visible and looked beautiful when lit up in the night sky. As always, students were a credit to the school and the boat’s crew complimented staff on how well they behaved. We wish all our students the best of luck in all they decide to pursue in the future, whether it be continuing onto Sixth Form or going to college. Billingshurst Firefighters: ‘As one joins, one retires!’
R
onnie Hampton is the latest fire fighter to join the team at Billingshurst. He completed and passed his final recruitment process in June and has now experienced his first few calls with the first one coming just a few hours into being on call. Ronnie lives locally and is self-employed. He provides cover and is on call during some working days/evenings and weekends. A huge gain to the station as this kind of cover is so valuable. It won’t take long before you’re jumping out of bed or the shower when your pager goes off, Ronnie! All part of being a retained fire fighter! Welcome to the team. Just as the numbers on station start to rise, fire fighter Mike Lord has decided to hang his helmet up and retire from the Fire Service. He has been based at Billingshurst for the past 30 years when he joined the retained section in 1987. A truly remarkable achievement. Mike is well known
around the village running his successful building company. I’m sure I am speaking on behalf of everyone on station and the local community – we would all like to say a huge thank you for your hard work and commitment to keeping Billingshurst and the surrounding areas safe. Mike has seen so many changes during his time and also so many different characters since joining the service. Mike’s experience and knowledge within the service will be very hard to replace – you will be missed Mike. Enjoy your retirement and remember you’re always welcome to pop in and say hello. All of us will be round soon for barbecue! A reminder of our Open Day on 23rd September. Full details of what the day has in store will be in next month’s Village Tweet. The Best of Summer at Billingshurst Primary School’s Summer Fun Day
B
illingshurst Primary School’s pupils, staff and their families continued their record-breaking fundraising efforts on Saturday 8th July, at the annual Summer Fun Day. The grand total from the day smashed the previous year’s record by more than £1,800, raising a remarkable £10,002.33 for the school. Assisted by the summer sunshine and a packed programme of sporting contests the event drew record crowds, and offered more activities than ever before. As the school’s biggest fundraising initiative, the event provides vital funds at a time when school budgets are under pressure. Many family favourites returned for another year, including the Deputy/Head Teacher Bungee Run Challenge, between Miss Nicholls and Miss Williamson, cheered on by the pupils. Miss Nicholls retained her title for a fourth consecutive year while Miss Williamson retired to consider future tactics. Mrs Doran, representing Key Stage 1, became the Wipeout Champion in the much-anticipated teacher Wipeout Challenge. The school choir and country dancers also performed for visitors in the display ring. The 100ft assault course, Gruffalo bouncy castle and glitter tattoo stall proved to be the most popular attractions on the day. The event also featured many local businesses,
from vegetarian food by So India, in Pulborough, to delicious ice-cream from The Fat Cow in Billingshurst High Street. The Billingshurst Tennis Club were on-hand to uncover the next Andy Murray and Coco’s Hairdressers spent the day braiding hair for hundreds of children. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher at Billingshurst Primary School, commented, “Each year we are overwhelmed by the results of our Summer Fun Day, and thanks to the generosity of our friends and families we’ve set another new high. The day went so well and it was lovely seeing so many children, and adults, having a lot of fun. The event is organised by an outstanding team of people from the Billingshurst Primary School Community Association, and without their hard work and ingenuity the school would not be able to provide the essential extras that really matter – music lessons, equipment, trips and events for the children to enjoy. Schools are communities first and foremost so I am very privileged to work with such a strong community of people and businesses.” Kate Clifford, Billingshurst Primary School Community Association Photo: Bungee Run Challenge was a popular as ever

The Weald Sixth Form Graduation Dinner
T
he Weald Sixth Form Graduation Dinner was held at the Hilton Avisford Park Hotel, on Friday 30th June. With over 120 students and 30 staff in attendance, our community feel was evident. It was a night to remember! Students arrived looking opulent in their stylish outfits and were excited to take the opportunity to celebrate their hard work over the past few years. In keeping with tradition, the students organised the evening arranging arrival drinks, a three-course dinner, a professional photographer, a DJ and dancing to keep them entertained until the early hours. “There were speeches from our outgoing lead
prefects reflecting on their time in sixth form with humour, nostalgia and very fond memories. Mr Backshall commented, saying that it was a “wonderful evening where students had the opportunity to reflect on their time in the sixth form. The whole event was planned and organised by the students, with the help of Mrs Tucker. A fantastic time was had by all. Many students will be heading off to university or into the workplace in September and we wish them all the best of luck.” Izzy Lewis, Events & Communications Manager Photo: Students celebrated the end of their school days in style

Don’t shoot the messenger… John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
I
n last month’s Village Tweet my thoughts meandered through the sport of fishing, so I thought it appropriate that I continue in this vein and pass an eye over that other country pursuit… shooting. I start by confessing that I am not a gun enthusiast. Like most who have grown up in the countryside, guns have always been there – or they were until a couple of decades ago when events forced much tighter controls into being about their use and ownership. As a boy growing up it was the air pistol that was the most wanted weapon, and the most elusive. In the farming community it was natural for children to see the twelve-bore leaning against the corner of the kitchen range and an early gift of the lighter four ten (.410" bore) would give them the encouragement to go and seek out any unwary rabbit for the family pot. As a lad there was only one local boy who had managed to persuade his parents to relent and buy him a much coveted pistol before he left school. It was, sadly, not the longed for Webley (who of course also made ‘proper’ military firearms), but the much cheaper Diana. Now the Diana of those days was a pistol whose propulsion was generated by the barrel of the gun being telescopic. You pushed the barrel into itself, loaded it, and on pulling the trigger the barrel shot out, thereby expelling pellet or dart. To say the thing was accurate was as wide of the mark as our shooting. The barrel’s violent action when you pulled the trigger ensured that providing you stood no more than six foot from the target you could be sure that, with luck, you might at least hit the barn door. Health and Safety were a long way off! Fast-forward to adulthood and the farmer’s friend, the twelve-bore. A gun that could, with its rather wicked recoil on the unwary or the young beginner, at best bruise you shoulder, or if held too loosely, blacken the eye and provide a steady crimson flow from the nostrils.
30
Thankfully the law on the control of these weapons is now very tight. Licensing and the requirement by law for very secure cabinets and fastenings have made the availability and ownership of them far more difficult. The first encounter I had with this gun was many years ago when I and a couple of family friends were visiting an old farmer out Petworth way. After a chat in the kitchen he enquired if we would like to take a walk round the farm and while doing so do a little rough shooting if we saw any of the rabbits that were running riot around his property. We eagerly accepted the offer, and he pointed to the row of guns resting in a pile against his old Rayburn. We each selected one, filled a pocket with cartridges and moved outside. Then we examined our prizes. How the old man was still alive I shall never know. The gap and play between the barrels and the bodies of the guns in every case was terrifying. There was a distinct feeling that to fire the weapon you would have to forcibly hold the two parts of the gun together by brute force. Still, we had a go… the foolishness of youth I guess. Somehow we missed hitting each other, or blowing our own heads off, but I still think it was more by sheer luck than skilful judgment. I did come to realise something though. If the man in your family is getting overweight, or lazy and reluctant to exercise; and you feel he should go for a good walk when you know he is very reluctant so to do, simply place a gun under his arm – no need to load it – and he’ll walk all day. It’s just a man thing! I haven’t got a shotgun on the farm now. With much-used footpaths around us and a much reduced problem with rabbits, the need for firepower happily has passed, and with a friendly pheasant waiting patiently in the garden every morning for his breakfast, I just couldn’t take any delight whatsoever in blasting away at his relatives on a shoot. However, if you feel like trying the sport, look up your local clay pigeon shoot. At least nothing gets hurt. Well, maybe your shoulder… or chin… or nose! John Nash

BCP celebrate their 15th AGM
o much has happened since the beginning of the Billingshurst Community Partnership (BCP) and there will be many people who have no idea of their existence and what they do… Every six weeks a group of dedicated communityspirited people meet to report on various organisations and projects being undertaken on behalf of fellow residents. Did you know that the BCP received The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service? Among their achievements are: Jubilee Fields fishing lake; the C4CC Nursery began as a BCP initiative which was taken over by WSCC which foresaw the necessity. In its early days the BCP was represented on the Station Road Gardens committee and they have a member on the BCP management committee. There have been several youth programmes which some of you will remember: a TAG club and the ‘YES’ project which found young people part-time employment, also the WISH project which was held at the library for people seeking help in gaining employment. Billingshurst’s Creatives Shop became a welcome addition to Jengers Mead, where local artists were able to display their wares. A Senior Citizens’ luncheon club held at The Billingshurst Village Hall and Conference Centre is still going strong after many years, perhaps you have been or are enjoying the bi-Monday get-togethers. Our big event is Billifest – our Christmas market – which began in a small way in 2002 and which we intend to hold again in 2017. We are particularly interested in community safety, liaising with Neighbourhood Watch and the Police
having recently distributed their book on Scams. The Education and Youth Enterprise ‘EYE Project’ is ongoing and you may have seen our plans for the envisaged building which will be invaluable to our young people. If you would like to be involved or receive information, please get in touch or look at our website: Billingshurst.community. We have a noticeboard at the entrance to the Weald School and down Jengers Passage displaying messages for the community from various organisations who get in touch with us for help to broadcast their events. Billingshurst Scouts, Billingshurst & District Rotary Club, Billingshurst Lions and various organisations are represented on our managing committee and we support each other in various ways. We are all volunteers doing our bit for the community. If you visit the library you will find many brochures produced by the BCP and a rolling display talking about the community and its organisations. Our meetings are open and our minutes can be read in the library. We are always looking for volunteers. Our AGM is on Friday 15th September at 7.30pm in The Billingshurst Centre. All will be welcome. June Perks, Secretary to the Billingshurst Community Partnership

Chickens / Logs
Keeping Chickens in the garden
T
here is nothing better than a nice fresh-laid egg for breakfast and this is the reason many people are looking to keep a few hens in their back garden. As well as providing tasty eggs hens make great pets too, often developing wonderful personalities and they are great to watch as they scratch around searching for food. Before embarking on hen keeping do check that you are allowed to keep poultry on your property as some homes may have restrictions on you doing so. Also consider how you are going to keep your hens – free range is the ideal but can be impractical if you have lots of foxes in the area, then you will have to decide on a permanent fenced in area or a movable fold unit in which to keep your birds. Chickens love to scratch around and can make the ground quite messy in winter so take this into account when choosing a site for their enclosure. The more space you can offer the happier the hens will be. Accommodation. There is lots of choice of hen houses on the market and you do have to be careful when buying, I would advise that you avoid the very cheap plywood housing as it is not strong enough to withstand a fox attack or high winds – I have heard of a few blowing away! Make sure the nest box is dark and private for your hens. A good layer of shavings or chopped straw under the perches will be sufficient. In the nest box itself provide some nice clean wheat straw – never use hay in the nest boxes. The house must be cleaned thoroughly on a weekly basis and using Poultry Shield will not only clean and disinfect your hen house but will also help control insects such as Red Mite. Chickens also love to dust bath; if you are keeping them in a movable unit they won’t have the opportunity to dig themselves a hole to bathe in so provide a large cat litter tray and fill with a mixture of bird sand and Diatomaceous earth. They will appreciate this very much and it will help keep their feathers clean and healthy. Beginners’ breeds. For first-time poultry keepers I would advise buying commercial hybrid laying birds such as Black Rhodes, Calder Rangers, or Bluebelles. These birds will have been vaccinated against various diseases and are proven to be good layers and be very hardy and docile, making them ideal for backyard
chicken keeping. Although the idea of rescue birds may be tempting they do have more specific needs and are more suited to experienced poultry keepers. Feeding your birds. In order for them to lay tasty eggs you will need to provide your birds with a suitable diet. Check with the supplier to see what they have been fed on; most commercial hybrids will have been fed on layers mash. Mash keeps the birds occupied for longer and can lessen the chance of vices such as feather pecking. If you want to move onto layers pellets do so slowly over 7 to 10 days so the birds have time to get used to a new ration. Make sure they have access to a layers ration at all times throughout the day. I would take the food away overnight when the birds roost to prevent rats. Chickens will also appreciate a handful or two of mixed corn in the afternoon as a scratch feed, this should only be given in small quantities and never mixed with the main feed. Chickens also love some fresh cabbage leaves hung in the pen and this can help prevent boredom too. Do not be tempted to feed kitchen scraps – not only is it illegal but doing so will unbalance your birds’ diet and can lead to issues such as Sour crop. Never feed lawn cuttings to chickens, it is often fatal. Make sure the hens have access to flint grit, as they do not have teeth they need to swallow the grit so it acts as ‘teeth’, grinding the food down within the gizzard so the bird can gain the best nutrition from its food. Parasite prevention. Chickens should be wormed every three months, Flubenvet is the only licensed poultry wormer and comes in pellet and powder form. It is safe to eat the eggs during treatment too. Beware of Red Mite – this dreadful parasite lives in the coop and feeds on the birds at night, prevention is better than cure so use copious amounts of Diatom powder and put red stop solution in the birds’ drinking water. Check housing daily for signs of infestation. If you love fresh eggs, and have time and space, keeping chickens is very rewarding and addictive! Jeannette Douglas, SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.com

Loxwood Village Fête & Dog Show raises £6,000
L
oxwood residents and their dogs turned out in force on a lovely warm and sunny day in June to support the annual village fund raising event. This year’s fête was the most successful on record for the amount of money raised to support local causes. Over £6,000 was raised and this money will be allocated to various good causes, such as Loxwood and Alfold Churches, North Hall, Loxwood Medical Centre, Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative, The North Singers and Loxwood Table Tennis Club. The crowds were entertained by the Slinfold Concert Band, The North Singers and a very entertaining Fun Dog Show. There were many other attractions such as side shows, Punch and Judy, children’s races, tombola, classic cars, barbecue, bar, teas, bouncy castle, balloon man and other interesting exhibitions. We would like to take this opportunity to thank
our many supporters who help to make this village day a not to be missed event in the village calendar. This includes all of our sponsors, our advertisers, our stall holders, the Committee who organise the fête as well as everybody who has helped with the setting up and the running of various stalls and attractions on the day. As in previous years our cake makers demonstrated their prowess in producing some amazing cakes for the café as well as the cake stall. We would also like to make a special mention of local businesses and individuals who very kindly donated some magnificent prizes for our Grand Draw and our tombola. Many thanks to everybody involved who made this year’s fête a success. Graham Moore Photo: All set up and waiting for the crowds to arrive…

nternational Cat Day on 8th August is an annual celebration of one of the world’s favourite animals. As a card-carrying doglover I admit I didn’t know much about our feline friends so I was fascinated to unearth some cool cat-facts! Cats are believed to have been domesticated in ancient Egypt. Cats sleep for twothirds of their lives. They usually spend 13-16 hours of the day asleep. (I am definitely coming back as a cat!) Adult cats ‘miaow’ to communicate with humans rather than each other. Cats use their whiskers as sensors to find out how wide a space is – and whether they can fit through it. Honeysuckle
I
know Wisteria is considered the king of climbers by many gardeners but surely honeysuckle must be the crown prince. The fragrance is nothing short of heavenly. It grows wild in a wood near my home and the scent stops walkers in their tracks whenever they come across it. Honeysuckle stems emerge from the ground and grow slowly upwards until they find something around which to twine. At this point they romp away, scrambling up frameworks or trees decorating them with spidery flowers and showering the air with that heady scent on warm summer evenings. The most common complaint I hear about honeysuckle is ‘failure to thrive’. People buy one, plant it and it struggles on for a couple of years before it turns up its toes and keels over. “Why did that happen?” they ask imploringly. Mostly it happens because, although they are undemanding once established, honeysuckles are quite fussy about their situation. Honeysuckle prefers its roots in damp soil, not too heavy, and enriched with plenty of leaf mould. This makes perfect sense if you think about the forest floor where it grows wild. And it likes its head in the sun to encourage prolific flowering. I grow it like clematis – I place a couple of bits of paving over the soil that surrounds the roots to over the cool shade they require.

Honeysuckle is not at all fussy about the support it needs. I have some growing over a pergola, and some over a wigwam in a border near a bench, just so I can get the benefit of the scent when I sit there. I’m trying to establish one over the porch too. As it’s against a wall I am having to make sure that it receives enough water. My father had one growing over an old tree in his garden. If you want to do the same I’d advise planting it near the extremity of the branch canopy rather than near the trunk where root competition will be fierce. Train the stems upwards along some garden twine into the branches and the result will be breathtaking. There are lots of varieties to choose from. Our native honeysuckle, Lonicera periclymenum has early- and late-flowering varieties and for scent they are difficult to beat. I do have a lovely Italian honeysuckle, Lonicera caprifolium, which was recommended to me by Alan Titchmarsh at a Gardeners World event many years ago. I wanted summer fragrance and I have not been disappointed with the great Mr T’s suggestion. Now is actually a good time to buy a honeysuckle as you can conduct a scent test at the garden centre. Happy sniffing! Rachel Leverton

The West Chiltington Floral Club had a wonderful demonstration in June, by Stephanie Laing, called ‘The F Factor’. Using a wide variety of containers, Stephanie celebrated all that is fabulous in the world of flowers. The following week we had our Annual Garden Visit which, this year, saw us visit a couple of our own members’ gardens. Despite it being the only day of rain in weeks(!) we still had an enjoyable wander around some very varied landscaping with beautiful flowers, shrubs and trees. Members could not help but gain ideas to take home for their own gardens. We were also treated to some delicious eats and drinks to round off the evening! Our next meeting will be held on 15th August when we have Marion Catt, from Hampshire, demonstrating ‘Gardens Galore’. We are a small, but friendly, club and always ready to welcome visitors (£5 on the door). If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact Patricia on (01403) 813027 or Carol on (01798) 813608. KOG (UK Oil & Gas) have applied for an extension of the planning permission for the exploratory oil drilling they have been carrying out at Broadford Bridge, Adversane, Nr Billingshurst since May 29th, 2017. West Sussex County Council gave their predecessor company, Celtique Energie, planning permission in Feb 2013 including 23 Conditions. Condition 2 specified a time of three years once work started. As construction of the drill pad began on 15th September, 2014, it is due to expire this year. Their work programme would mean a run over of some 10 weeks. Reasons to object: • Time. Applying for a year is unnecessary. • County Council has a Duty of Care it needs to exercise for its local residents. • The Weald is a special area which is very faulted. Faulted areas can move unexpectedly or transmit liquids to other places. Campaign to Protect Rural England, CPRE, identified a fault near the site by which liquids and chemicals could reach the public water supply. Some of the chemicals only recently mentioned by UKOG are carcinogenic or very toxic to aquatic invertebrates. • Inadequate monitoring. We can only know if things are going wrong by monitoring the air and water – independent consultants say this is being poorly done. There should be independent monitoring both above and below ground otherwise the UKOG is policing
itself. The local community plans to do its own. • Currently, when things go wrong underground we won’t know until it’s possibly too late – once contaminated the pollutant cannot be removed from the water supply. • The Emergency plan referred (wrongly) to an A+E Dept at Horsham Hospital i.e. things can go wrong – extending this permission without a proper emergency plan would be irresponsible. • Bond. There is no insurance against anything going wrong. Other Councils have sought a Bond to cover against any damages from accidents, blow outs or spillages, West Sussex should do the same. • HGV/road use. Such developments require many HGVs to deliver materials for use and to take away wastes. Already the road has been eroded after 1 month’s work and WSCC is liable for the repair bill. • Climate Change was not considered in the original plans. The Paris Convention on Climate Change made it clear that fossil fuels should stay in the ground. • Lack of public consultation. One chance 5 years ago is completely insufficient for local residents. This issue needs to go to the Planning Committee and to be discussed in public. Consultation on this extension closes on 10th August. Submissions need to be sent to the Planning Dept at County Hall, Chichester, PO19 1RH. Include the planning reference number: WSCC/029/17/WC. Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair KKWG. Tel: (01403) 700395

Stretch your imagination with a Mediaeval Torture Rack!

s with most things mediaeval, crime and punishment was a grim affair, and Graeme Lougher from GrayZ Creations is working with The Loxwood Joust to create a replica of the torture rack used in the Tower of London. “I had not realised how big a torture rack actually was.” This was Graeme’s first thought upon starting to build the rack. Inside the frame, which is styled to give the appearance of aging forged iron, are three large rollers. The ratchet system, tightened by ropes, is on the middle roller and the ropes are attached to the outer two rollers, acting as a pulley system to turn the top and bottom rollers in opposite directions. Hands and feet are attached to these rollers by a rope loop and when the ratchet is turned, the body is stretched over the rollers. To complete it, Graeme is also creating a ‘dummy noble man’ to go on the rack for demonstration purposes. Having tried out the rack to test it, Graeme said, “I am surprised at how uncomfortable it is! I had

always thought that you were simply stretched straight up and down. I had not realised that some racks, such as this one, also stretch you over the rollers, causing your spine to painfully bend too.” He continued, “This has been an exciting constructional challenge as the rack incorporates a wide range of materials including metal, fibreglass (admittedly not a mediaeval material!), wood and rope. However, it actually works and that is fantastic!” Do not miss the chance to see this recreated piece of history at The Loxwood Joust on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th August. Loxwood’s Hidden Sculptor!
raeme Lougher is a local sculptor and prop maker, also skilled in casting with fibreglass and resin materials. Graeme is a talented gem with a fun filled creative past and an enthusiastic imagination, developing his skills in prop and mould making at Shepperton Studios. He worked on films such as Harry Potter, helping create realistic looking background scenery, before working on some of the many props for Father Ted and creating one of his most unusual props, the bicycle that the prop hamster Reynaldo rode across Father Ted’s living room floor. Graeme started his business in Esher, before moving to Loxwood in 2007 and launching GrayZ Creations in 2015. He is clearly a gifted and imaginative sculptor. From pictures, his imagination or smaller maquettes, he creates
horses, animals, iconic characters such as his set of Jack Frost statues and life-size figures, with his favourite to date being a set of life-size female figures, cast in iron with an aged, rusted look. Graeme’s work is found locally and worldwide with his Jack Frost sculptures being permanently on display at Beaulieu. Others are located in the United States and Europe; work-in-progress includes a life-size pack of wolves which will be set in a private forest in Austria. In addition, he can also reproduce his client’s sculptures by cold casting them in a variety of different metals. Going further into his workshop, you find the props! Here you discover the Witches Cauldron and Dragon he created for the Loxwood Joust, along with a variety of other pieces. Graeme regularly supplies props for exhibitions and events and his raven’s heads are proudly
adorning the Yeoman Guards Clubhouse at the Tower of London. The most recent addition is a Mediaeval Torture Rack that will take pride of place in the Torture Zone at the Loxwood Joust (see ad on opposite page). When asked about his projects Graeme explained, “I get carried away when talking about my work and people think I am either crazy, or weird, such is my excitement about building skulls or menacing figures, etc. However, the strangest looks I have received were when I said that I’m building a body for the torture rack!” But surprisingly, Graeme’s passion is Halloween and his main projects currently in progress are props for Halloween and Santa’s Grottos. The number of skulls, cloaked creepy monks and rusty cages with skeletons scattered around the workroom are evidence of this! Graeme has a small team of creative staff, mostly from the local area, which varies in number depending on the projects. He said, “Finding the right creative staff is always a challenge. The team here are all people who want to do something different with their art and creative abilities. I derive great satisfaction in helping them to bring out their unknown creative skills and am always interested to hear from people who want to try something different.” Graeme will be exhibiting his own sculptures at Wisley Gardens from 19th August 24th September at their sculpture event and should you wish to get in contact please email grayzcreations@gmail.com or visit his website: www.grayzcreations.co.uk.

Beavers / Accountancy / Out & about
A Beaver Scout’s life is as busy as a… beaver!
I
t’s a busy life being a Beaver Scout: Mini-beast hunting, tracking for bears, visiting the fire station, meeting reptiles and insects (big ones), tent pitching, sleeping over, learning how to cross the road, paddling a raft and hiking through the woods. There are two colonies in Billingshurst: Oaklands meet on Mondays and Cedar Beavers meet on Tuesday; the boys and girls are aged 6 to 8 and meet every week for a funfilled programme all based on the Beaver Award Scheme which rewards them with interest and challenge badges. Next up we are going abseiling, and working on our Team Challenge badge. In the autumn, some of the Beavers will be lucky enough to go on a sleepover at the Historic Dockyards in Portsmouth and visit the submarine museum. We have plenty of time for Scouting skills too with knots, toasting marshmallows (a few) campfire songs

and map reading. One of our projects for this term has been planting seeds and watching them grow, by the time you read this we will have planted them all out in the Station Road Gardens in Billingshurst. We are looking for new adult volunteers to help us and ensure that Beavers of the future can have as much fun as the ones today. There are flexible options available if you can’t come every week and the Scouts have a full programme of adult training. For more information or to arrange to visit the Beavers please contact Zoe, email: gsl@1stbillingshurst.org.uk Chris Evans, Acting Billingshurst Beavers Leader (Read more about Chris on page 50. Flying the flag on Sussex Day On Friday 16th June, Billingshurst Parish Council celebrated Sussex Day by flying the flag at the Billingshurst Centre in Roman Way. The significance of the date is because 16th June is also St. Richard’s Day – and marks the life of St. Richard who was Bishop of Chichester during the 13th century.
Station Rd Gardens – judges visit
NO SWIMMING at Jubilee Fields
Parish Council Clerk Greg Burt and Friends of Station Roads Gardens’ Chairman Keith Brown, were delighted to show South & South East in Bloom Judge Jean Griffin around the gardens on 26th June as she inspected the site for the Best Small Park category. Greg said, “It was a beautiful day, and Council staff, contractors and the volunteers had pulled out all the stops to ensure the site was looking its very best. Jean had visited the site privately some years ago so was able to see how the site had developed since it was first laid out. A very experienced horticulturalist who lives in Horsham, she was able to give Keith a few tips on some necessary pruning! She also met some of the other volunteers and park users. We can’t wait to hear the results in September; it will be fantastic to get some official recognition for all those who have worked so hard to deliver such a high quality facility for our residents and visitors. For me personally, it was nice to meet Jean again, whom I had shown around Alton several times in the past when I coordinated the town’s In Bloom entry.”
The Fishing Lake at Jubilee Fields is NOT designed for people to swim in. Not only is it extremely dangerous and detrimental to marine life but it is against Council Byelaws. If you become aware of anyone swimming in the lake please call the Police on 101 as they are able to act under Council Byelaws covering the area.
Neighbourhood Plan at the Billingshurst Show Parish Clerk Greg Burt, Parish Councillors and other members of the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group had a stand at the Billingshurst Show on Sunday 25th June. Residents were asked their views on our draft Vision & Objectives, being sent out to all residents early this autumn.
Think of your neighbours this summer Please remember that on warm summer days and evenings playing music, lighting bonfires and taking part in noisy activities might be great fun, but it can also have an effect on your neighbours too. In most cases a pleasant informal approach to the person responsible can resolve the matter without need for a formal complaint. Please also be careful leaving windows open as it allows easy access for intruders. Finally, if you plan to be away from home for a period of time please ensure that you have a nominated neighbour or contact for your burglar alarm.
Dementia clubs for local people – providing respite for carers There are some small and friendly Clubs run by trained staff and volunteers dedicated to providing high quality, engaging activities for those living with dementia. The team base activities around individual’s hobbies, interests and abilities. During the day a hot lunch is provided as well as other refreshments. Age UK Horsham District recognises the importance of carers being able to access good quality respite care to enable them to pursue their own hobbies and interests. Regular carers meetings will enable carers to access support, information and advice. For more information please give us a call on 01403 260560.

Our Community Volunteers – Chris Evans
C
hris Evans’ life with the Scouting Movement started early and hasn’t really stopped. A Scout and later a Venture Scout, after two years spent training and working as a climbing instructor he was asked to set up an Explorer Section in the District in 2002, which he ran for thirteen years. During this time Chris went to the Chile Jambouree, a massive international Scouting event attended by some 35,000 people. He is currently the Deputy District Commissioner but has also taken on the local Beaver troop on a temporary basis while a new leader is recruited. (For an update on the Beavers, see page 48. Ed.) Married to Nat, Unit Leader for Billingshurst Guides, there is no doubt that this is a family affair. The couple’s shared passion for the Scouting Movement and their obvious enjoyment of all it entails means that their two young sons, Adam and Daniel, have been involved from a very early age, with Adam close to achieving his badge for spending twenty nights away on expeditions. “I do Scouting because it’s fun, and so that our sons have the opportunities that I had,” says Chris, who goes on to cite setting up a Paddle Sports team, making
bottle rockets and spending a summer’s evening on inflatable boats and paddle boats with his Beaver troop as just some of the fun he has had in his role as volunteer. Chris feels that the district still has lots of Scouting potential with a dynamic plan, an exciting programme, good supporters and volunteers and the longest waiting list that they have ever had, but he is keen to emphasise that more fulland part-time leaders are needed – and that they will thoroughly enjoy themselves! WS2017 is taking place at Ardingly in August this year, a huge camp for Scouts and Guides, which offers a wide range of outdoor activities from abseiling and high ropes to a caving experience in a specially-converted double-decker bus, all in the context of a Harry Potter-themed week. A final word from Chris: “Scouting is really about giving everyone a chance to do something that they have never done before”. Pippa Cleeve If you know someone who you feel deserves recognition in Our Community Volunteers please
