ne of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the winter landscape is to photograph it! Looking at the world through a camera viewfinder enables you to really appreciate the winter’s beauty that is so easy to otherwise take for granted. Winter is perhaps the most photogenic of all the seasons and with most mobile phones now having a pretty decent camera on board why not have a go at taking some snaps this winter? As I write, Santa has yet to squeeze down the Village Tweet office chimney but you will be reading this on or around New Year’s Day. I will therefore close by wishing you a Happy and Prosperous 2014. Well I don’t know about everyone else but I am exhausted after Christmas this year! Don’t get me wrong but when you get older and still work full time, you have to let the odd house tidy slip away… The ironing pile becomes a mountain inside of a hill, but we all know it’s worth it and it’s great spending quality time with family and friends, welcoming in the New Year and planning ahead for 2014. You may have have heard that the housing market activity has picked up. At our office, we had a very busy few weeks in December. Demand for housing has continued to gain momentum due to improved mortgage availability, rising household confidence and The Help To Buy Scheme. Buy-to-let demand has remained firm given the low yields available on other investments and inflows of investments from overseas buyers, sometimes seeking a safe haven for funds. We have also heard reports of transactions being delayed by capacity constraints within firms of surveyors, mortgage brokers and conveyancing solicitors.

Sausage, Bean & Chorizo Casserole METHOD

1. Heat the oil until hot, add the sausages and fry for 4-5 minutes, or until browned but not completely cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside on a warm plate. 2. Add the chorizo to the empty pan and fry for 3-4 minutes, or until crisp and golden-brown. Remove from the pan and set aside with the pork. Chorizo releases a lot of fat and it’s best to drain this off. 3. Add the onion, chilli to the same pan and fry for 2-3 minutes, or until softened. 4. Add the garlic and the wine then bring the mixture to a simmer until the liquid has reduced in volume by about a quarter. 5. Add the chopped tomatoes and the beans then return the sausages and chorizo to the pan and stir well. 6. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over a low heat, cover the pan with a lid and cook for at least 45 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and reduced in volume. If the sauce becomes too dry, add a little more water or wine. 7. Just before serving, stir in the honey and season, to taste. Then serve over plain boiled rice or creamy mash, and sprinkle with parsley.

This Spanish-style casserole serves 4. Preparation time: 30 minutes. Cooking time: 1 hour

INGREDIENTS 2 tsp vegetable oil 600g/1lb 5½oz thick, good quality pork sausages 150g/5½oz chorizo, cut into serving pieces 1 medium onion, sliced 1 small chilli, seeds removed, flesh chopped 2 fat garlic cloves, finely chopped 75ml/2¾fl oz white wine 400g/14oz tinned tomatoes, chopped 200g/7oz canned butter beans, or cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 2-3 tbsp chopped fresh parsley 1 tbsp clear honey

Billingshurst Primary School Children Bike It to Breakfast

n Thursday 28th November, Billingshurst Primary School celebrated the launch of its Bike It program with a ‘Bike It Breakfast.’ And what a breakfast it was! Our expectations were far exceeded when over 150 pupils and parents showed up bright and early with helmets in hand and glowing cheeks. An incredible turnout considering Billingshurst Primary virtually has no cycling infrastructure, and very few pupils currently cycle into school. But it shows that there is very real interest! The pupils absolutely loved it, and word has it that there are many more who could not make the first ‘Bike It Breakfast’ and so are clamouring for a second! Philip Burroughs said, “It is really great to see that so many pupils are keen to actively travel to school and that their parents support them. It is the one journey that they will be making almost every day for the rest of their time at school, and if they can travel it in a way that is fun and active, they will be that one step closer to living a happier and healthier life!” Of course, there would have been no ‘Bike It Breakfast’ without an actual breakfast. Budgens generously supported the breakfast by providing array of fruit, juice, cereals, toast, muffins, pancakes and yogurts for the ravenous pupils and parents who arrived early Thursday morning. Store Manager, Morgan Rees comments, “We are always keen to support our local community and especially for such a worthwhile scheme. It was great to see so many children with their siblings and parents attend the breakfast.” This ‘Bike It Breakfast’ was the first event of many that will be held in Billingshurst Primary School. As a fledgling Bike It School*, Billingshurst Primary will be engaging pupils and parents throughout the year to build a culture of active travel in the school and to enable those pupils and parents who want to change or experiment with their travel to school. Bik-Kay Talbot, Co-Chair of BPSCA *Bike It is a national Sustrans initiative intended to transform young people’s travel to and from school, funded in this case by West Sussex Council Council, and launched in 12 schools across Chichester and Horsham. www.sustrans.org.uk

Bah – Handbag!

t’s a sad fact that the story of my life can be told in the handbags I have owned. In my tiny, trendy youth I carried a tiny, trendy beaded pouch. As a student I switched to practical-but-cool leather rucksacks. Through the years I gained a degree, a husband and four children, and a larger handbag… much larger! The amount of stuff I lug around now is scary. Makeup for starters (who knows when I may run into Johnny Depp at the post office), a mobile phone (which hadn’t been invented when I was a teen), spare tights (me), spare pants (toddler), tissues, baby wipes, a set of keys that would put a prison warder to shame, a purse of gargantuan proportions (though sadly lacking in cash), a notebook and wi-fi-enabled tablet (well I am a writer), assorted pens and spectacles. I bet I’m not unusual either. My life is in my over-sized bag, but while fine for everyday purposes, when I go out in the evening I face a dilemma. I know my outfit would benefit from a petite, chic clutch, but which bits of paraphernalia can I do without for four whole hours? It’s tempting to grab my normal bag, but I know I’ll regret this when I spy more elegant souls clutching their diminutive designer numbers. So for all of us who struggle I have devised a definitive and minimalist evening bag contents list…

Relay for Life 2014 Horsham Rugby Club, 24th/25th May

ollowing on from 2013’s massive fundraising effort where a staggering £30,500 was raised by local teams, CANCER RESEARCH UK, Relay For Life, Horsham are pleased to announce the 2014 event taking place at Horsham Rugby Club on 24th/25th May. Relay For Life is an inspirational family fundraiser held on behalf of Cancer Research UK, where teams fundraise throughout the year leading up to the main event and then join together for the actual Relay. Team members then take their turn to walk around a track for 24 hours to signify that ‘cancer never sleeps’ while one and all are welcome to come along and soak up the festival atmosphere taking place around the track. Cancer survivors of all ages launch the event as VIPs by walking the first lap. They’re cheered on by family, friends and relay participants from the community who have come together to celebrate their achievements. A Candle of Hope ceremony will be also be held as dusk falls in memory or in celebration of loved ones. The 2014 Relay For Life will take place at Horsham Rugby Club which offers teams a superb location in which to participate and visitors to enjoy, bringing those who have been touched by cancer together to celebrate life and raise both awareness and money for Cancer Research UK. Teams are made up of friends, family and colleagues all working together to: • Raise awareness of cancer within the community • Raise around £40,000 in funds to help find better

ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating all forms of cancer • Pay tribute to the courage of cancer survivors • Remember those whose lives have been claimed by cancer Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life is a unique celebration which unites communities to help beat cancer and culminates in a fantastic family and team weekend. A Pain in the Neck

ost of us have suffered neck pain at some point, generally after sleeping in an awkward position, or perhaps after a fall or a jolt. A cricked neck is often a temporary state of affairs. Rest and over-the-counter antiinflammatories like ibuprofen, are usually sufficient to alleviate it. If the problem is muscular, a heat pad can help, though if you suffer with an inflammatory condition such as rheumatoid arthritis, heat may exacerbate any inflammation, so a cold-pack would be preferable. If the cricked neck is a recurring issue, it’s useful to consult your GP in order to rule out the possibility of underlying conditions

such as arthritis or scoliosis. An osteopath can be very helpful, as they are knowledgeable about musculo-skeletal problems and may be able to manipulate your bones and joints to realign them and alleviate the pain. They can also teach you some exercises to strengthen and stretch that area. Manipulating joints, especially in the neck region, is not without risk so be sure that your osteopath is registered with the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Long-term, improve your posture, make sure you use a low, firm pillow when you sleep and take the time to stretch your neck gently during the day, especially if you sit at a computer for extended periods. More cafés help ‘Spread The Warmth’ with Age UK Horsham District

ge UK Horsham District’s ‘Spread The Warmth’ campaign launched at the start of November encouraging the community to raise funds to support older people during winter, as reported in Village Tweet, November and December. Cafés and restaurants are taking part by raising money from their warming products in order to support local vulnerable people during the colder months. December saw The White Horse Smokehouse and Grill in Steyning getting on board by donating £1 from their ‘Christmas In A Glass’, a hot winter cocktail that warms you up and will also warm up a local older person. Helena Hudson, founder of The Real Eating Company’s cafés in East Street and Swan Walk, Horsham (pictured) said, “We are approached regularly by local charities to help them in their fund-raising efforts for worthwhile causes. We are an independent, small business and feel that we should do something for the local community where we work and make our sales.” The company contributed 5p from every hot drink sold in December to help many more elderly people stay warm this Christmas in Horsham. A Good Read January’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett The Guts – Roddy Doyle To be honest, it is a shock to find out that Jimmy Rabbitte is middle-aged with teenage children. It shouldn’t be – after all, The Commitments was over 20 years ago – but it is. It seems to be a bit of a shock to Jimmy too – and the shock is compounded when he discovers that he has cancer… The Commitments may be better known as a film (and now as a stage musical), but it was a book first: the first of Doyle’s Barrytown trilogy, which followed the fortunes of the Rabbitte family in Dublin. Here, Doyle revisits the family many years on. Ireland is in the grip of the recession, and Jimmy and his wife are feeling the pinch. He is still in the music business, although rather than discovering new talent, he spends his days digging into the past for old punk bands who still have a following. And he has cancer. At the age of 47 he has to face the fact that he could die. Doyle’s style is not for everyone, and his language is not for the faint-hearted, but the dialogue still sails off the page as authentically as it ever did, and much of the story is carried through speech. There are a series of wellexecuted set pieces too, including the finale which brings together Jimmy, his long-lost brother Les, an old punk and a former bandmate (and fellow cancer sufferer), to witness Jimmy’s eldest son triumph in front of a festival crowd. OK, he is pretending to be Bulgarian and singing a song which is pretending to be 1930s Irish

Blues, but who cares? If you have read the Barrytown trilogy, this is like meeting a bunch of old friends in the pub. If you haven’t, then read it anyway. Odds are you will go back to the original books to meet the characters as they were in the beginning. The Wee Free Men – Terry Pratchett “Now... if you trust in yourself... and believe in your dreams... and follow your star... you’ll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren’t so lazy.” There is much wisdom in The Wee Free Men – and the above message is my favourite by far. What teenager doesn’t need to hear it? The thing is, Terry Pratchett has a way of passing on this kind of knowledge so that you don’t even know you are thinking about it – you are too busy laughing, or wondering what on earth will happen next. The Wee Free Men is not a Discworld novel as such, but is a story of the Discworld. It follows Tiffany Aching, armed with her trusty frying pan, as she tries to rescue her brother from the Queen of the Fairies. Luckily, she has the Nac Mac Feegle on her side – slightly incomprehensible, tiny little blue folk who are nothing if not fearsome. This is an ideal introduction to Pratchett for the younger reader – and for any Discworld fan, the chance to see the Feegle in action is not to be missed.

Grow Your Tenner! Canal restoration donations work harder through match funding

The Wey & Arun Canal Trust has already raised £16,000 through the Grow Your Tenner match funding scheme and has signed up again in a bid to gain a further £11,000 share of the £500,000 funding available under the initiative over the next six months. The funding is a result of a grant from the Office for Civil Society and is being administered by Local Giving. Donations made to WACT under the scheme will be matched poundfor-pound up to £10 per donation and, by using Gift Aid, the donation will be worth 25% more too. According to WACT chairman Sally Schupke, the initiative presents a great opportunity to raise funds for essential restoration work and money

he first fitted carpet my parents ever owned was medium brown with a deep, textured pile, and it hid a multitude of sins. Grit and dirt from my dad’s work boots, food spills from us kids and the occasional accident by the pet dog were all cleverly concealed. An average-sized living room carpet can hold its own weight in trapped soil – around 150 lbs. FACT TWO. About 85% of the dirt a carpet holds is hidden under the surface, buried deep in the pile.

FACT THREE. This hidden dirt wears away at the carpet fibres and reduces the carpet’s life dramatically. FACT FOUR. A dirty carpet can harbour harmful mites and bacteria that can trigger asthma and cause allergic reactions. FACT FIVE. The best way to remove deeply embedded dirt and the bacteria that lives in it is to have your carpets professionally cleaned. FACT SIX. Research suggests that you should have your carpets cleaned every 12-18 months to remove unhealthy elements. There are a number of effective cleaning methods around, including steam, shampoo and chemical, but the most important consideration is whether the technician doing the work is properly trained and qualified. Haven Heavenlies join RSC’s Open Stages

alented local drama group, Haven Heavenlies, who have delighted audiences over the past three years with their performances of classic English drama will return in July 2014 for an open air production of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labours Lost. The group is made up of local actors from the Horsham district, Rudgwick, Loxwood and Guildford and rehearse in The Haven, near Billingshurst. All the Heavenlies have a passion for Shakespeare and creating a thoroughly enjoyable experience for our audiences. The Heavenlies are very proud and excited to announce that the group has been selected by the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Open Stages project which supports and mentors amateur theatre groups with professionally run workshops and creative input. The Open Stages project runs until April 2016 – the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare – and there will be opportunities for participating groups to

showcase their productions in a professional theatre setting. Performance dates for Love’s Labours Lost are Thursday-Saturday, 3rd, 4th and 5th July 2014 in the gardens of Ingfield Manor School, Five Oaks near Billingshurst. A Shady Space

ight levels during January are low and the days are short, but now the winter solstice has passed, days are slowly lengthening. There are, however, areas of the garden which never receive much sunlight, and these shady spaces are often the conversation starter when I speak to gardeners. A south-facing garden is on the priority list of most house hunters, but in reality there must be around the same number of houses built on the dark side of the road! If you’re lucky enough to have a front and back garden, then you should have somewhere to grow the sun lovers, but it’s often a rear shady garden which causes most frustration. So what’s my answer? Embrace the shade! Shady spaces can be much more atmospheric than those open to full sun, they have a great earthy smell and can support a diverse range of plants and mosses. My suggestion is to layer the planting, so that it looks like the creation of shade is intentional. I would probably go as far as to erect a structure, such as a pergola or shade sail over the top, creating a cosy outdoor room, and use lighting to visually warm the space at night. Your layering process begins with the boundaries. The first stage is to paint them black, and before you scream “BLACK?!” out loud, hear me out. Painting the boundaries black

will help them to fade into the background once plants mature. The second stage is to clothe the fences and walls with climbers. Although hated by some, Ivy is perfect for this, but other things to try are shade-tolerant Honeysuckles or wall shrubs such as Hydrangea petiolaris and Garrya elliptica. For additional flower colour, why not cram in a couple of Clematis? Introduce height with a small tree such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ or the evergreen Trachycarpus fortunei. Clump-forming bamboo makes a great vertical accent, as does the banana Musa basjoo. Next in our ‘shade lasagne’ are the shrubs such as the purple leaved Acers, Viburnum tinus, Box (which can be clipped into shapes to add formality) and Sarcococca. Smaller perennials such as Astilbe, Aconitum and Hellebores provide colour and finally ferns such as the evergreen Asplenium scholopendrium supply wonderful glossy ground cover. So there you have it, a shady oasis, and as with most things in life, if you fully embrace it, a north-facing shady garden can be magical. Robinson Crusoe comes to Barns Green

obinson Crusoe wishes he was left on a deserted island, but unfortunately for him he has not only his fiancée, but also his future mother-in-law, traitorous crew, island natives and a gorilla with him! All that and some really special surprises! It’s Panto time again! and the Barns Green Players are rehearsing in preparation for another great show. This year’s Pantomime is Robinson Crusoe and the cast and backstage crew are preparing yet another blockbuster production with lots of new surprises. This year there will be a total of six shows performed over two weekends in January in the Barns Green Village Hall. The shows will be on Friday 17th (evening), Saturday 18th (afternoon and evening), Friday 24th (evening), and Saturday 25th (afternoon and evening). Graeme Muncer is Directing the production and is extremely excited about this year’s production, “Robinson Crusoe is not one of the classic Pantomime stories but we have a great script and some wonderful songs and dances and I hope I can bring some new twists to the production to make it as much fun and entertainment as possible. There are some new cast members this year who are brilliant

and they are all determined to match and improve on the very high standards that we have set ourselves and look forward to as many people as possible coming to see the shows”. The shows are aimed at all ages although the afternoon performances are particularly suitable for the very youngest children. There are singalongs and sweets for the kids and opportunities for the audience to join in with the fun. For the evening performances there is a licensed bar serving a variety of alcoholic and soft drinks as well as sweets. The afternoon performances begin at 2pm and evening performances at 7.30pm. If you are regulars at the Barns Green Players Panto you will know just what a good show they put on and if you haven’t been before you are in for a real treat. Living with Laika – Growing up!

ccording to the Dog Age Calculator, Laika now has a human age of 19! Formerly we simply multiplied a dog’s age by seven but now, recognising that different breeds of dogs age at varying speeds and at different stages of their lives, we can find a more exact human age – should we want to! So in human terms, Laika should be at university or college, undergoing an apprenticeship or working. As it is, she is a NEET though strictly speaking she is constantly in training and making slow progress! She’ll sit, lie down and stay but still struggles with recall which presents a problem when it’s time to come home. Bigger and quicker, she is now able to catch rabbits which dangle limp and lifeless after an initial cry. Laika has a surprisingly soft mouth and I can only think that these poor souls die of fright rather than a canine intrusion! She is seldom prepared to share her ‘catch’ with me and invariably follows me at a distance with her prey drooping either side of her mouth like a mad, overgrown Zapata moustache. Eventually, the creature is relinquished and she continues her

exploration alongside my walk, free until home time calls and I attempt to put her on a lead. The worst moments occur when she finds a previous capture and shadows me bearing a rank, purulent, furry corpse! I suppose Laika has been able to make a positive contribution in reducing rabbit overpopulation though and I am pleased that she has been able to end the lives of a number of poor creatures infected with myxomatosis. I have been rather surprised to see that some of her victims had been disfigured by the awful myxoma virus. With dreadful skin tumours and virtually blind, the animals must have suffered enormously and Laika’s presence in our countryside has helped to relieve their misery. A further sign of Laika’s increasing maturity is her need to ‘squat’. She is now ready to leave a message – fine when she’s on grass or in woods but you can imagine my consternation when the squat occurred on a paved footpath! Somehow, a male dog appears more discrete when performing a languid leg-lifting exercise against an adjacent shrub! Ron Myal

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …

ou may remember that last June, Wolfie and Chocolate Buttons, the guinea pigs, were finally allotted the late James the cat’s outside cage. Unfortunately for them there was no choice. Their space inside the house was needed and they didn’t want to go in their outside cage so they had to be found a home. Nanny hammered a piece of stuff on the roof bit and put their nest box inside, fed them and left them to it. Fortunately for them there was plenty of grass for them to eat and it wasn’t long before they were very happy outside. In fact as they chattered to themselves it was easy to hear that they were well content. As the weather grew colder, Nanny lined their nesting box with extra straw, blocked off the sides of the wire cage to stop the wind and made sure they were cosy. And they loved it. The perfect solution. Or so Nanny thought… But one night as they cuddled up to one another they heard a distinct scratch, scratch, scrape sound. They were terrified. “What’s that?” asked Wolfie in a quivering voice. “I don’t know,” Chocolate Buttons replied in an equally shaky voice, and they cuddled closer together all night quaking in fear. The next morning they were happy to see Nanny with some lovely green leaves and bits of apple. “Oh, oh,” Nanny said, “I see we have had

visitors in the night,” and she surveyed the dug out holes emerging from underneath the floor of the cage. She put a brick over one hole and filled in the other. But that night again there was the scraping sound of furious little claws scratching the earth away and the chomp, chomp of tiny jaws munching away on the guinea pigs’ food. Wolfie and Chocolate Buttons shivered and shook with fear but stayed inside out of danger. When Nanny came in again next morning the hole by the brick was even bigger and the filled in hole had been dug out again. She called out to Sally “We have a war situation!” “Right,” said Sally, “I’ll get the rat poison out.” So she and Nanny carefully laid red seed poison deep in all the holes that led from the outside underneath the guinea pigs’ cage and blocked the inside holes with big pieces of brick. But the rat colony must have heard the bad news, because as soon as they saw the red seed they decided to retreat that very night. There were other and more delicious sources of food elsewhere on the farm. After a couple of nights with no visitors, Wolfie and Chocolate Buttons breathed a sigh of relief and settled down at night again unafraid. And Nanny left the seed there just in case the rodent visitors decided to return. Yvonne Fleece

Caring for your golden oldie

orses and ponies are living longer and healthier lives today, and many horses are still in regular work well into their twenties. With old age comes wear and tear to the teeth and it is not uncommon for veteran horses and ponies to have worn or even missing teeth. There are many things owners can do to help a veteran horse get the most from its diet. Some horses lose the ability to chew hay and this can be replaced with short chop chaff type products or with a high fibre mash that is easily eaten. There are many senior feeds on the market some of which contain prebiotics to help with gut function and glucosamine to help joint mobility. Older horses also benefit from as much turnout as possible to keep the joints moving and good quality turnout rugs to keep them warm. Veteran horses and ponies will also benefit from a sixmonthly dental check. For those oldies who find keeping weight on a struggle feeding as much hay or haylage as they will eat is the best start for a feeding plan. If possible, make sure the horse has access to decent grazing or provide hay or haylage in the field while turned out and make sure the animal isn’t being bullied off any food. Using a higher calorie conditioning or veteran feed can help in some cases and high oil feeds such as micronized linseed can be useful to increase calories while keeping meal sizes manageable. Never feed more than 2kg of concentrates in one feed. Another important point with poor doers is to have the horse checked for gastric ulcers; these are becoming increasingly common in horses today. Symptoms include irritability, weight loss, reduced appetite and poor performance. Speak to your vet if you are concerned about the possibility of gastric ulcers, a high fibre diet will lessen the risks of equine gastric ulcers. Cushing’s disease is also common in older horses. It is caused by a growth or an enlargement affecting the pituitary gland and symptoms can vary greatly from equine to equine; they can include the growth of a long wavy coat that is not shed properly over the summer, excessive sweating, a pot-bellied appearance, lethargy, excessive drinking and urination, and bouts of laminitis.

Horses and ponies affected with Cushing’s also have a repressed immune system and are more prone to picking up infections and not so able to fight them off. Your vet can diagnose Cushing’s with a blood test and although not curable it can be greatly managed to give the horse a good quality of life. Medication can be given to slow down the progression of disease which the horse must be kept on for the rest of its life. Keeping the horse or pony clipped so it doesn’t get damp and sweaty will also improve quality of life. Regular foot care is essential for those suffering from Cushing’s and be extra vigilant for signs of laminitis. Another common problem with older equines is wear and tear on the joints. The horse may become stiff in his stable overnight and may take longer to warm up while being ridden. It is important to allow the older horse a longer warm up time especially in cold weather. Many horses have arthritic changes to their joints. This need not mean the end of their ridden work; in many cases exercise is beneficial for the horse’s body and mind. There are many joint supplements on the market to help ease the symptoms of old age but be sure to get an accurate diagnoses from your vet first before treating any lameness problems yourself; many horses are kept happy and comfortable on a small amount of painkiller and your vet will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have. It is also worth having a veteran’s saddle fit checked more frequently as older horses can suffer from loss of muscle tone as well as muscle wastage behind the withers. Keeping your veteran warm during the winter months is very important. Make sure that any rugs worn are a good fit and are not rubbing or slipping. Ensure there is adequate shelter and some older horses who may have lived out all of the time in the past may now appreciate the comfort of a stable or barn overnight in their golden years. What’s to do? John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

e have now come to that long, cold and often most miserable month of the year. The excitement of Christmas has passed and the warmth of spring and summer seems so very long away. So how do we fill our time during these bleak and dreary winter evenings? There’s the tele of course, but we all can get a little square-eyed after a while, even those of us who are addicted to soaps, drama or documentaries. I know – lets go out… The pub. That bastion of Britishness. Warm and friendly, fine ale and good conversation and if you are lucky, maybe some live music. Most hostelries still sport an array of pub games to entertain the customer and the regular quiz is now an important part of the week’s bill of fare. The demise of so many of these wonderful establishments over the years is something that many of us look back on with sadness: a village that loses its pub loses its heart. Then there’s the cinema. Once, this was a weekly event for a huge mass of people. The queue outside the Odeon on a Friday or Saturday night could be enormous. Folk standing patiently, in all weathers, behind that wooden sign that designated your ticket price. The Saturday morning shows for the kids. A tanner to get in, a sing-song, cartoon and a serial, ending with Roy Rogers, or similar, persuading us to ride an imaginary horse all the way home while shooting at anything and everything in our path. I hadn’t been to the cinema in years until quite recently when my son invited his old dad to see a couple of Sci-fi films that he knew I would enjoy. What an eye-opener. A screen as big as a house, sound to blow your ears off, and 3D effects that allowed you to reach out and catch the drifting tears that fell from Sandra Bullock’s cheeks in the blockbuster, Gravity. Some years ago my late mother and father-inlaw ran the great Christmas Whist Drive at Petworth. So we felt that it was prudent to give our support to the charitable evening’s event. It soon became obvious that those attending knew the game backwards. I did not. How was I to realise that the lady sitting opposite to me (apparently my

partner) was calling for my Queen of Hearts? How did she know I was holding it? I swear she never said a word, lifted an eye or even kicked my shin. The whole game is a mystery of silent mindreading as far as I can see. Go and try it. Cribbage is along the same lines, with calls of “fifteen two”, “fifteen four”, “fifteen six” and “a pairs eight” mixing with the odd adage that “his knob makes nine”… the mind boggles. Oh, the wonders of village hall entertainment. You should also not forget here the tremendous fun that the local drama groups can bring to a winter’s evening. From Variety to Panto they devote huge quantities of their time and effort into producing fantastic performances that will delight you and fill you with amazement at the skills and talent locked up in the everyday folk around you. For those with a more energetic bent, there are other events that beckon from the mist and cold of the winter evening. Indoor bowls have proved to be a growing and delightful way of spending a couple of hours on such a night. Most villages have a club and all are welcome to come and ‘have a go’, so give it a try. I must confess that I have found great fun at my local hall. Forget the old view of white trousers, straw boaters and softly spoken words of encouragement. That may be the case in competition, but it does not apply here. Mind you, once again there is a snag if you have never bowled a ‘wood’ before. I presume it was some evil-minded genius with nothing better to do who came up with the design of these wondrous cannon balls. You would think that it should be a simple task to bowl the short length of a village hall and finish within fairly close proximity to that little white jack. It should be a doddle. WRONG. The results from the efforts of learners such as myself can make for much merriment and more than a fair share of profanities to be directed at the offending object as it once more runs out of bounds. But stick with it. I love the game, as by its very nature it gets under the skin and teases that extra ounce of determination to master the blasted things. So, you couch potatoes, don’t just sit there. Get out and try your luck. Roll a bowl, deal a card, watch a play, or just visit your local hostelry and enjoy good company and friendly chat. Perhaps for just a little while the winter’s night will yield the warmth that we all crave for in the darkness and cold of January. John Nash

Does your PC need a de-tox this New Year? Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services

ike the rest of us this time of year, your PC could probably do with a de-tox. After all, it’s not had much rest, had too much to do, and not had a really clear out for some time. Sound familiar? So we thought we would give you some simple tips on how to give your PC a new lease of life! Have a good old clear out… Temporary files are unnecessary files your computer stores on the hard drive. Removing them periodically is a quick and simple way to free up memory and improve overall performance. For Windows XP, Windows 7, and Vista: Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean. And for the same reason you should get rid of programmes you never use. For Windows: Follow the Start Menu to Settings and then to Control Panel. From this screen click on Add/remove programs or Uninstall a program. Remember to empty your Recycle Bin after deleting these files, otherwise they are still on the hard drive and taking up space; just right click the icon and navigate to ‘Empty Bin’. Important Point: When uninstalling programs be absolutely sure you don’t need them; some programs are needed for the operation of the computer.

And then get organised! Run a Scandisk on your computer. Scandisk scans the computer for corrupted files and fixes them to improve performance. Before running scan disk on the computer, keep in mind that it can take several hours to complete depending on the size of your hard drives, and any errors that may exist with the drive. Important Point: Before running scandisk you should close all open programs to help prevent any data loss and prevent any problems during scan. For Windows XP, 2000, Windows 7 and Vista: Double-click My Computer, highlight the local hard drive by clicking on it once, right-click the highlighted drive, click Properties, click the Tools tab and click check now to check the drive for errors. Then run a De-Frag. No it’s not as nasty as it sounds. Fragmentation is when your computer’s files get disorganised, affecting its ability to lay data out sequentially. Defragmentation is the correction to this process. For Windows: click on My Computer, then click Properties, then click the Tools tab. From this tab click on the Defragment button and run the program. Please note that we recommend you do a full backup of your entire system before attempting any of these steps. Buying a Used Car?

uying a car is a costly business, which is why it makes sense to check out the used car market where you can save thousands of pounds. Unfortunately it can also be fraught with problems if you don’t get it right. Here’s how to minimise the risks and give yourself the best chance of finding a bargain. Research. Once you’ve decided on the type of car you need (based on your particular priorities with regards to comfort, economy and space), research the costs to purchase, tax, insure, service and fuel it. Bear in mind that although older models are often cheaper to buy, they can be more costly to run and may work out more expensive in the long term. Fact Find. Have a list of questions to ask the seller before viewing the vehicle. Find out about previous owners; the mileage; the condition; how long the MoT and tax have to run; whether it has ever been written off, in an accident or stolen; if it has any finance outstanding; whether there is a log book, full service history, MoTs and receipts; and whether any maintenance needs doing. Inspection. Always view the vehicle at the seller’s address in daylight and in dry weather. Check the sills, wheel arches and door bottoms for rust. Make sure all lights and seat belts work. Check the condition of the tyres and mirrors. Look for mismatched or bubbling paint and uneven gaps between body panels. Check

the mileage is about correct for the car’s age (average is 10,000 per year). If the odometer numbers are out of line the mileage may have been tampered with. Check that the car’s VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), found under the bonnet and on the windows, matches the number on the V5 certificate (logbook). Test Drive. Drive the car for at least 15 minutes on different kinds of roads. Listen for unusual noises and look for excessive smoke from the exhaust. Make sure you’re happy with the brakes, gears, steering and suspension. If anything shakes, rattles or grates, the car may have problems that need sorting out. Oh, and make sure you are insured before test driving the car! Paperwork. Once you have agreed a price (haggling is fun!), make sure that all paperwork looks and feels genuine (no photocopies). Check that the VIN and recorded keeper details tally with the seller, and examine the service history and MOT certificates to verify the mileage. Get a receipt for your payment from the seller, and finally – make sure the new keeper sections of the log book are completed. Taking a knowledgeable friend along is always a good idea. Failing that, the AA and RAC both offer inspection services. You have to pay, but for peace-ofmind it may be worth it. Debbie Singh-Bhatti
