ith summer well and truly here, and the schools’ break up imminent, have a look at our What’s On pages for plenty to do and see, this warm July. Next month marks the centenary of the start of the First World War. Billingshurst’s War Memorial by St Mary’s Church serves as a poignant reminder of the loss this conflict brought to just one of thousands of villages and towns in the so called ‘war to end all wars’. If your family has a WW1 story that has been passed down to you that you would like to share, please send it in to Village Tweet. Grahame Cover: Jester ‘Devil Stick Peat’ at the 2013 Loxwood Joust. Billingshurst Primary School pupils take part in the Great Billingshurst Cook-Off

M

ove over Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay, the children of Billingshurst Primary School have published the latest collection of culinary sensations following the Great Billingshurst Cook-Off. Held on Monday 19th May, the Cook-Off saw pupils and staff across seven year groups bring in array of samples of favourite family recipes, which were then put under the close scrutiny of a panel of eager judges. After a day of nail-biting taste-testing, which resembled the final of Masterchef, winning recipes were chosen from each year group. Judges included Headteacher Helen Williamson; Morgan Rees, Store Manager at Kavanagh’s Budgens; Community Governor Nikki James, Branch Manager at Cubitt and West Estate Agents; Community Governor and Mark Sheath from Jengers Craft Bakery. The panel had the difficult task of picking seven winners and a staff recipe, as well as 100 top recipes, which now feature in the book. The book includes a unique collection of tried and

tested family recipes loved by all ages such as Ellie’s Red Onion & Sausage Quiche, Charlotte’s American Chocolate Cake, Molly’s Marvellous Muddy Muffins, Nanny and Brooke’s Lemon Drizzle Cake, Mia’s Star Shortbread as well as some special local variations of famous dishes which cannot be found anywhere else. The overall KS1 winner was Milly Dixon with her Sticky Onion Tart and the KS2 winner was Holly Hunter’s Lemon and Raspberry Layered Polenta Cupcakes. Helen Williamson, Headteacher at Billingshurst Primary School commented, “The children created some fantastic taste sensations during the Cook-Off and the event provided an important opportunity for us to discuss nutrition and meal planning.” The recipe book is available from Billingshurst Primary School, Cubitt and West, Jengers Craft Bakery and Kavanagh’s Budgens, priced £6. Relay for Life raises £32,000 and counting!

R

elay For Life, Horsham 2014 held at Horsham Rugby Club raised over a staggering £32,000 for Cancer Research at their recent 24-hour walking fundraiser. 17 teams joined together over the wet May bank holiday weekend, featuring kids and adults of all ages in a joyous event that celebrated life, remembered those lost to cancer and saw survivors fight back. The weekend kicked off at 12 noon with an opening ceremony which saw committee Chair Tracy White welcome the teams including solo ‘Relayers’ Barry Dance and James Treherne. Barry was aiming to spin for 24 hours while James was aiming to walk solo covering a target of 100K in his second of eleven solo relays in 2014! As the rain threatened to fall cancer survivors made an emotional gesture of thanks when they each released a dove before starting the Relay by walking a lap of honour. Teams then took it in turns to walk around the track over a period of 24 hours signifying that cancer never sleeps. Superb hosts PEACH Entertainments put on a first-class stream of entertainment to keep teams motivated with a main stage heaving with music including Willie Austen, The Saviours of Soul, Local Vocals Choir and a live acoustic set by Brent Yeomans. Talent competitions and a lively MC host also kept the walkers and visitors on their feet and having a good time. Hunger was kept at bay and refreshments flowing with a sumptuous hog roast by the 1st Shipley Scouts. St John Ambulance were also helpfully on hand for the duration. Traditional family fun was aplenty and themed stalls were also in abundance. Advice on cancer awareness was

available supported by Horsham Wellbeing and sports tasters and exercise advice supplied by Estelle Clark and her team from Horsham Pavilions. Adults and children alike had their dampened spirits uplifted by a very special visit from the Owls About Town on the Sunday morning which followed a cold night of walking. There was also a traditional Candle of Hope Ceremony when special candle bags were decorated with memories and messages to honour those who have been touched by cancer and to remember loved ones lost to the disease. Candles lined the track prior to a silent lap of remembrance which took place by all those in attendance. Relay For Life, Horsham 2014 was a real success in local community fundraising led by an all volunteer committee. At the closing ceremony Tracy White announced that in excess of £32,000 had already been raised and went onto to show appreciation to all involved, “The Relay For Life, Horsham volunteer committee would like to thank all those who attended the event – especially our VIP survivors, our teams, our volunteers and all the performers, who gave up their time to support us.” Barry and James both successfully completed their challenges with participants and visitors cheering them on their way. Relay For Life, Horsham is already planning their event for 2015 and is seeking volunteer committee members and event sponsorship. If you would like to be part of this superb family fundraising event then please contact Tracy White on 07713 131373 or email horshamrelayforlife@gmail.com Kirstie Flood, Relay For Life Media Volunteer

BSRA* Charity Fun Day Jubilee Fields, Billingshurst, Sunday 3rd August, 12 noon-6pm (*BSRA – Billingshurst Sports & Recreation Association) have had this crazy idea to do a charity event for local charities.” Donna French came into our pre-school one day and asked if we would support her. She formed a committee, with many friends, deciding the charities will be Chestnut Tree House and St Gabriel’s Playgroup. We decided to hold a car boot sale on Monday 26th May, as a start to raise funds. “A bit random for a Wednesday but... Sometimes the ideas and dreams that are floating around your head for a long time just seem to come together at the right time with the right people to help create something hopefully amazing and truly worthwhile,” Donna’s facebook message read later that evening. The new committee and friends set to work. Local businesses were contacted via Facebook and the call went out for live music. Within a week, many stalls had been booked and bands were willing to play. Donations for prizes came in swiftly. Two bouncy castles and an amateur dog show were booked. Within the first month, more activities were confirmed, including an ice luge. An email address and Facebook page were set up. So far we have pony rides, dog show (fun/amateur – bring your dogs for Scruffs), Neaks and Tidy (pampering and advice for dogs before entering the dog show, or even if you aren’t), Holbrook Animal Rescue, craft stalls, super cars, Sweet on Treatz, cup cakes, funfair, bands (loud and traditional), vintage items and tea tent, dancers, bar, hog roast, Billingshurst Bouncers, ice carving, traditional children’s and adult fête stalls –

by the organising committee at reasonable prices. We will need tombola and draw prizes, small items for stalls, quality secondhand goods to sell. We will also need help on the day. Chestnut Tree House is the only children's hospice in East and West Sussex and cares for over 280 children and young adults from 0-25 years of age with progressive lifelimiting conditions from Sussex and south-east Hampshire. There are potentially 1,000 families with lifelimited children in Sussex. Chestnut Tree House offers support for the whole family including psychological and bereavement support, end-of-life and short-break care and sibling support. The hospice costs nearly £3 million per year to run. Families are never charged for their care and less than 8p in every pound is funded by the government, so we rely heavily on the generosity, help and support of the people of Sussex. St Gabriel’s Playgroup is Registered Day Care to take children from the age of 2 to 5 years. We take West Sussex County Council Free Entitlement Funding. We rely heavily on fundraising and need to raise £5,000 a year. Founded in 1978 we provide spacious, cheerful accommodation with a large safe outside play area and a large car-park. Our experienced and fully qualified practitioners ensure that a wide and exciting range of activities are made available to the children in order to stimulate, while being carefully planned to comply with the requirements of the National Curriculum Early Years Foundation Stage. Ditch that Itch!

J

uly typically brings in the tail-end of the hay fever season and regular victims have probably found products to give them relief this year. It can be as simple as taking a single non-drowsy tablet every morning; nowadays, there are lots of options to try, and they don’t cost too much. But, whether you’re a hardened sufferer or wondering if your recently itchy eyes and stuffy nose mean you’ve got it for the first time, it is still worth getting the latest information from your community pharmacy. You might chat to them, for example, about pollen barriers, including one product which is ‘five times faster’ than pills, as claimed in a major campaign. Arun Valley Pharmacy (by the station) takes pride in giving good, friendly advice and in having the branded products alongside cheaper, equivalent ones. Allergy treatments can sometimes also help with another summer woe – insect bites and stings. Simple cleansing with soap and water usually suffices, but reducing the urge to scratch maintains recovery and keeps infection at bay. Of course, it’s often impossible to avoid the pesky pollen and bothersome bugs, but at least the safe-in-the-sun message is clear these

days – all that itchy sunburn has been consigned to the past, right?! Oh well, a mild redness can be treated with lotions containing aloe vera or calamine, and by taking paracetamol for extra comfort. Now, if you haven’t yet ‘scratched out’ the whole idea of the great outdoors, do consider your pets – flea and tick control is important all year round, but expecially in the summer. Arun Valley Pharmacy has many products for the health of your animals*, including preventative treatments for cats and dogs (both branded and in a new, budget range). If you have an itch for further information and the best in health, do visit us! Diane and the team *Reminder: even if available without restriction in supermarkets, medicines must only be given to animals where the container says you can or where supplied under a Vet’s Prescription. The dangers to health should be self-evident, but this is also backed by law. Arun Valley Pharmacy offers sensible, competitive prices across the board, and customers buying animal meds the approved way should suffer no disadvantage. Book reviews / About the house

A Good Read July’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett novel as she concentrates on her characters and the ways in which their lives are affected. Cromwell’s own family tragedies and triumphs are offset against events at court, developing the human side which makes this depiction so different. This isn’t an easy book, and at over 600 pages it is a substantial read. But the minute I put it down, I picked up the sequel – and that fact speaks volumes.

Wolf Hall – Hilary Mantel This is a book that I took some time ‘getting round to’, not being sure that historical fiction was what I felt like reading. However, from the moment I did get round to it, I was hooked. Mantel deserves the praise and awards heaped on this volume and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies. It is truly a remarkable book. The central character, introduced in Wolf Hall, is Thomas Cromwell – clerk to Cardinal Wolsey at the time of Henry VIII’s attempts to divorce his first wife. The fact that Cromwell stands out against the figures of Wolsey, Thomas More and Henry himself is testament to Mantel’s storytelling power. He is a compelling character: complex, brutal at times and yet always sympathetic – a far cry from other fictionalised accounts, and yet somehow definitive. The novel traces the rise of Cromwell, as first Wolsey and then More fall, seeing him become Henry’s chief adviser at the same time as the Boleyn family come to dominate the court. Anne and her sister Mary are probably the central female characters, each deeply involved in the life of the king and both fascinating in their own right. The historical and political intrigues surrounding these events are well known to many, and Mantel uses them to structure the

There’s A Dinosaur in My Bathtub – Catalina Echeverri Pierre is a dinosaur. He comes from France (you can tell by his name, and the moustache is a bit of a giveaway, too). And he lives in Amelia’s house – sometimes in the bathtub, but he can hide behind the shower curtains too. You see, no-one else knows he is there. Amelia and Pierre have wonderful adventures together – often involving marshmallows, ice cream and, of course, stinky cheese (remember, Pierre is French!). Each adventure is beautifully illustrated, with lots of little details and a smattering of French phrases just for fun. Sadly, by the end, Pierre has to go away when the autumn leaves start to fall – but surely, he will be back? This is a charming picture book which does what all the best picture books do, telling one story with words and another with images. Destined to become a bedtime favourite, Oui?

The Last Party John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

f you had travelled around the lanes of Kirdford and the surrounding villages some 20 years ago you would have seen many orchards dotted through the fields that bounded the hedgerows. Now there are none. All the commercial plantations have gone. Grubbed and burnt on the pyres of many sad hearts. Ever since the ’thirties and ’forties the heavy clays of the area had produced some of the finest tasting Cox’s Orange Pippins that you could find, and countless villagers had spent many happy autumns picking the fruit to earn a little pin money for the coming winter. Now the fields are empty of the groaning trees and the days of laughter that so many remember are just memories of days gone by. Costrong farm was one of the first in the area to be planted and sadly a few years ago it became the last to succumb to the forces of the market and the final orchards were wrenched from the ground with even the youngest trees joining their gnarled and ancient sisters on the glowing embers of their companions. So, after all those years, the pickers were no more. Pickers like Glad Marshall, now well into her eighties, who had faithfully attended the harvest for over 43 years. They worked in all weathers, and there were many years when it was not the most comfortable of jobs, when the rain never seemed to stop and the wind never to rest. Yet they came every season, and for many their children followed them when they too were old enough to climb a ladder and carry a picking bucket. This year we decided that they should be remembered. The owner of Costrong, Sally Cave,

26

sent out invitations to all the ones we could recall and the response was wonderful. Nearly 40 of our old ‘crew’ responded and we again held our annual ‘end of pick’ lamb roast. (Only this time it was in May). So many old times to recall and chat about, so much to catch up on from the intervening years. A glass or two of wine, delicious roast lamb and mint sauce – and a large slice of Glad’s home-made apple pie and cream. Now that’s what I call a ‘get together’. The sadness is that we shall never have that way of life again. The fruit farms of old are dying, and those that still struggle on find it ever more difficult to get local staff to gather the harvest. We feel that we were so fortunate to have worked the orchards of Sussex during the times when the English Apple was recognised as the crème de la crème of fruit, and when the harvest was enjoyed by so many wonderful characters who lifted the spirit and made the end of summer something to look forward to with happy anticipation. One day I have promised myself that I will write down my memories of those characters. They brought me so many things. A whole new vocabulary when things went wrong, a greater understanding of the female mind, (perhaps this is wishful thinking on my part as even Sigmund Freud would have gone home shaking his head at times), and a warm glow of happiness at the many, many times that the most dominant sound that would echo through the trees was that of laughter. Bless every one of them. I for one will never forget the memories they gave me. John Nash Photo: Costrong Farm’s Wonderful Crew. The Last Reunion, May 2014. Maximus flora phobia – true or just a tall story?

I

’m not quite sure whether or not this is an officially registered phobia, but it seems to be one I see people suffering from frequently, so I thought I’d invent a Latin name for it. Maximus (large) flora (plants) phobia, creeps up on people slowly and its more common than you may think. Maybe it’s not as serious as Botanophobia, the official phobia for people who have a genuine phobia of plants, but this pseudophobia is specifically related to selected members of the plant kingdom which grow taller than humans. I first discovered this was an issue when I planted a Rowan tree in my back garden at the age of 18. “How big will that grow?” my mum would ask me every spring, and each year I would reply with my standard answer, “Oh, not much bigger than that!” I’m not sure if it’s the fact that humans are generally control freaks and like to be able to reach the top of the plants (for maintenance, I can only presume), if they feel overwhelmed by the sheer size of a large tree, or perhaps are overly concerned about it growing too near to the house. There are ways to manage the growth of large trees and plants, such as pollarding (cutting off the branches to leave a trunk with a stumpy top), or ‘balling up’ as it’s known in the industry (the

act of trimming shrubs into spheres). In my opinion both are hard work, and generally leave ghastly looking results, with the exception of topiary of course! A much better idea is to select the correct tree or shrub in the first place. If you have a border just two feet wide, plant a small shrub such as a Hebe that only wants to grow to two feet wide. A little research should throw up some good varieties. Trees such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ and Acer griseum, or Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ are ideal. Try Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ for a flowering cherry, or Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’ which will grow in any location and any reasonable soil. If you’re a plant-nut like me, then it will probably frustrate you when people over trim plants to within an inch of their lives, or hack bits off trees, making them look like alien forms. If you live with a ‘sufferer’, as a last resort you could try introducing a pause in your words, as a good friend of mine did when asked how large the Eucalyptus in the front garden would grow…“Oh, only four-t-five feet, darling.” She actually got away with that one… until the following summer that is anyway! Francis Maude MP endorses Billingshurst regeneration

M

ember of Parliament, Francis Maude, has endorsed proposals to develop a Billingshurst village centre master plan. Following Horsham District Council’s appointment of planning consultants to prepare proposals for the village centre, District Councillor, Adam Breacher, brought together colleagues from District level and leaders of the Billingshurst community and business organisations on Friday 23rd May to brief the MP on the current work underway to develop a clear vision for the village centre to make a viable plan reality MP endorses Billingshurst village centre regeneration initiative. A community engagement day will take place at a future date in the village; this will allow people who use the facilities in the village to express their views on any draft plans that would help shape the future of Billingshurst village centre. Adam Breacher stated, “We have a real opportunity to develop a positive plan and to create a long-term vision for Billingshurst village centre that the community can get behind and support. Billingshurst has enormous potential and has a

wealth of attractions and assets. Indeed, the community now has the chance to maximise the impact of these benefits. The village has an attractive High Street and excellent amenities, but there are areas of the village centre that are isolated and are not used to their potential. We need to make these areas more amenable to people who wish to use the facilities on offer. The planning consultants will help us to consider how we can make these areas best work for the community”. Francis Maude said, “I am delighted to see that the leading community and business organisations are working together in Billingshurst towards the long-term sustainability and future of the village. With schools, a railway station and excellent regional connections, Billingshurst has great potential if opportunities are seized”. Heather Pepper, Horsham District Council Photo: District Councillor, Adam Breacher (left), updates MP Francis Maude (2nd left) on Billingshurst village centre regeneration plans. Attending were: (Left to right) Sally Stallan, HDC planning consultant; Susan Venturi, Chair, Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce; Denise Campbell, Chair, Billingshurst Community Partnership; Paul Berry, Chair, Billingshurst Parish Council; and Amanda Jupp, County Councillor

Living with Laika – ‘Rhoridggersheps’

“I

had a farm in Africa…” a place where the silence at night hurt the ears and where the blue sea sky lapped lovingly on thorny acacia and spreading mango trees during the day. Where bright yellow weaver birds hung madly, noisily from basket-ware nests and where genial Rhoridggersheps roamed! Never mind the modern trend for crossbreeds with portmanteau dog names, Labradoodles, Cockapoos, Puggles and Jackhuahuas (I understand the Queen breeds Dorgies – a cross between a Dachshund and a Corgi) here we were in central Africa 30 years ago, with an original designer dog! Our darling German Shepherd, Birgit, had escaped our watch and was ‘covered’ in an instant by the Rhodesian Ridgeback, Fourie, and hence the Rhoridggersheps that resulted. And what ugly creatures they were too, coarse-coated with a spine of bizarre hair that ran contrary to the rest of the fur like a wild punk. Rather than combine the protective and loyalty traits of the two breeds, our pups greeted all and sundry like long lost friends and proved more adept at welcoming thieves than threatening them! Somewhere out there in the warm heart of Africa, dogs exist that can trace their DNA back to the original Rhoridggersheps and Birgit and Fourie! We’ve had quite a lot of rain recently and I have

been pounding the streets more than usual in order to avoid the muddy maelstrom that is Laika, arriving in the kitchen. It’s astounding how aware Laika is of the pet inhabitants of the homes we pass. I can sense a frisson of excitement as we pass under the railway bridge over Natts Lane approaching the junction with Groomsland Drive, where innumerable cats appear to dwell in Myrtle Cottage. I can feel her pull as we approach number 40, Silver Lane, in order to greet a black cat with a white bib that invariably sits on the verandah. She knows where the small yapping dogs will greet her from window sills and sofa tops and where larger dogs will bark from behind fences and gates. It is uncanny how her soft padding progress can set off a cacophony of sound in the neighbourhood and indeed how her presence can cause strangers to ask to stroke her – obligingly, she will always sit to receive a caress. Of course, like most dogs, she is adept at recognising the postman! Poor Adam only has to approach the house to ensure that Laika is primed and ready to receive the mail! Such is Laika’s ‘affection’ for Adam that as we amble around our streets and roads, Adam doppelgangers complete with bag, shorts, hi-vis jacket and hairy legs are completely ignored! Ron Myal

Equine / Accountancy

Shine in the show ring

T

he summer show season is finally here and what can be better than showing off your equine friend at a horse show? There are many shows held all over the country catering for all standards of horse and rider from the fun village show to the serious county level qualifiers. I have dedicated this article to those riders and horse owners who are relatively new to showing and would like to give it a go but are unsure where to start. Showing is all about presentation and attention to detail and making the overall picture of horse and rider a beautiful and harmonious thing. An excellent place to start is to go and observe showing at affiliated and county level, there will be many professional producers at these shows and by watching them closely you can get an idea of the classes that you and your horse will fit into as well as being able to observe correct turnout and pick up ideas on the art of ring craft. Many show producers also offer clinics and master classes aimed at those new to the show ring; these clinics offer huge amounts of valuable advice and can help build both horse and rider’s confidence and partnership. Once you have decided what classes you are going to compete in start to practise your show, this is just as important for in hand classes as it is for ridden showing. There really is an art in being able to show a horse off to his best – it would be very disappointing to go into a class only to find that your horse will not trot out nicely in hand. For ridden classes practise your show at home so you know exactly what to do once in the ring, keep it short and sweet, showing off a walk trot and canter on each rein. Some classes such as cobs, and hunters also require a gallop, so being able to do this well and pull up after can win you the class! Occasionally judges may ask you to perform a set show although this is not so common at local level. A good way to practise ring craft at home is to stage a mock show with a few friends. This is also a good way of getting your horse used to working in company – the last thing you want is your horse running away from you because he has never cantered around as part of a group before! Another important thing is to teach

your horse to stand nicely for the judge both in hand and under saddle. Some classes require the horse to be ridden by a judge, you can practise this at home by getting a variety of different riders to ride the horse in all paces. Make sure your horse is turned out to his best; a happy well muscled horse with his ears pricked and striding out will always make a good impression. Don’t mistake fat for show condition – the horse should be fit and well muscled, not wobbling! Hill work is brilliant for building up a horse’s rear end. Make the most of your horse’s best points, choosing the right bridle for instance will really set off a horse’s head, cobs and hunters should wear a double bridle with a wide, plain noseband, Hacks should have a very dainty and elegant bridle with a coloured brow band. For local level showing your usual saddle will be just fine, even if it is synthetic, just make sure it is very clean! Also make sure you have a plain brown discreet numnah underneath, you don’t want to be remembered for the wrong reasons such as a bright red saddlecloth! For many classes horses will need to be plaited. If your horse has a weak neck you can disguise it by using slightly larger plaits placed on the top, for a short, thick neck use smaller plaits farther apart, have a practise at home and see what works best for your horse. Give your horse a through bath a day or two before the show, although greys and coloureds often need another bath on the morning of the show! Grooming the horse thoroughly using plenty of elbow grease will also get a fantastic shine on his coat. There are many great coat conditioners on the market for a last-minute touch-up before entering the ring! The Most important thing of all is to smile and remember YOU are taking the BEST horse home at the end of the day – that’s why you own him! Have a great show season! Jeannette Douglas. Celebrating Young Arts at The Weald School

A

s described in the article on Young Arts in last month’s Village Tweet, A level art students at The Weald School are embarking on a two-day residency with artist Katie Sollohub, funded by West Sussex Decorative and Fine Arts Society (WSDFAS). The workshops will provide both staff and students with the opportunity to work alongside one another to extend their painting techniques by experimenting with colour, pattern and gesture to create atmosphere rather than a representational image. The workshops are designed to challenge participants in the way they view everyday items and aim to inspire future work for their A level courses in the coming academic year. The opportunity for staff and students to work together is exciting and enriching, providing teachers with room to develop their own professional practice, which they may hand on to future generations of young people and so help to sustain art in education. We are especially delighted to be able to employ the skills of Katie Sollohub, a Sussex-based artist and inspirational teacher, using her own experiences and processes to help motivate others. The workshops have been facilitated by the West Sussex DFAS, Young Arts programme, which seeks to enhance and develop the arts in education and provide enriching experiences for young people. Billingshurst Fire Service welcomes two new recruits

A

s summer approaches, we would like to introduce to you two new recruits who have successfully passed and finished their training programme. Now it’s time for them to have a new best friend: their pager! I’m sure this will be very close to them at all times so they don’t miss their first fire call... First of all, Tim Wakeford. Tim is providing much needed daytime cover and works at Keating Thomas based in Daux Road. Keating Thomas has allowed many employees to respond to fire calls in the past so we thank them again for letting another employee fulfil his dreams. Local fire stations would not be able to cope without local businesses helping out. Our second recruit is Matt Gravell. Matt is a self-employed tree surgeon who will provide cover during the evenings and

weekends, so this means work doesn’t stop for Matt once he’s back from a hard days work, swapping climbing trees for climbing ladders! Well done to both lads on completing the training programme, we welcome you both, and your Fire Service experience starts now... Now that the warm weather is here, please be careful if out and about in the countryside. A carelessly dropped match or cigarette end is all that is needed to start a ferocious grass and heath fire. We often respond to barn fires, grass fires and general fires caused from dry heat during the summer but much of this could be prevented with good housekeeping on farms and rural areas. The Dog Display and Great Sheep Hunt Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

M

agnus watched Nanny as she packed the bags. Lunch and a bottle of watered-down wine for her, and all his paraphernalia: leads, check; retrieve bone, check; long line, check; water, check; and above all, treats (lots of them), check and double check. “OK, Mags, let’s rumble,” she said and off they went from Worthing to Rudgwick to take part in the Dog Club’s Agility and Obedience Display. It was sunny and just a little cool with it, but there was lots of shade. The dog owners were allowed to bring their cars right up to where

Julia and Saphie the rings were going to be. Nanny tied Magnus up with a bowl of water while she helped to set up the rings. The Agility people set up the agility equipment because they were going on first. Then it was time for some lunch and a quick read for Nanny and a snooze for Magnus. Freddie shows how The Agility commenced. Lots of people watched as assorted sized dogs rushed around the course, jumping, weaving and going through the tunnel. Some of them were really good. One of them – Freddie – had even been to Crufts this year. The smallest dog, even smaller than Magnus, was Oscar and he looked so cute jumping and disappearing into the tunnel. After the agility equipment was put away it was the turn of the Obedience section and that included Nanny and Magnus. They all heeled into the ring according to size and there was Oscar right behind Magnus. All the dogs and owners did recalls or retrieves and the really clever ones did special activities like retrieving their toys or a special cloth; some even got sent away ‘to bed’ or to stay between two cones. Magnus eyed them jealously and decided he would do that stuff next year cause he’s done some of that with Emma his last dog trainer. Then it came time for Magnus. He and Jess had been in the same class since they started with the club so their job was to go up to a gate, stop, let the owner through and then go when asked to. Magnus did it beautifully and Nanny was very pleased. Jess and Georgina did it really well too Then, after Oscar

40

had done a very special trick – picking up a Teddy, putting it in a basket and carrying the basket – Julia and her dog, Saphie, gave a deep bow and suddenly it was all over – except for the tidying up which seemed to take ages. It was while she was helping to tidy up that Nanny noticed Julia and Elaine and some other people running after some sheep. The sheep seemed to be heading for the main gate, but were then headed off. Evidently they were there to take part in a sheep race and had bright stripes down their backs. But all the racing they were doing seemed to be all over the recreation ground with several people including Julia in hot pursuit. Finally one was caught and manhandled into the trailer. The others went through a gate down towards a stream. Julia followed and Nanny went over to watch. As the sheep were finally cornered and brought back up to the recreation ground, Nanny (who had been on a sheep handling course the weekend before!) stood by the trailer. One by one the sheep were brought to the trailer. But when Nanny opened the gate the first time, of course the sheep already inside the trailer tried to escape! Thankfully it was quickly caught. Julia brought the last one up. She was red in the face and very hot. As Nanny opened the gate, Julia womanhandled(!) the sheep into the trailer. “I wondered where you were,” she said breathlessly to Nanny. “I thought you’d done a sheep course.” Nanny

Little Oscar not short on tricks just smiled and said, “I thought I’d leave all the running around to you young ones!” After all the excitement Magnus and Nanny, and all the others too, looked around the show before they went home to a well deserved rest. It was a shame that there were no photos of the great sheep hunt for this story, but I guess imagination is a wonderful thing. Yvonne Fleece Photos: Keith Allen

Buying a new computer? It doesn’t have to be a PC… Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services

W

hen talking loyalty, the opposing sides in the ‘computer war’ are Mac versus PC. Just like Canon versus Nikon, you are either one or the other and you stick to your side no matter what. However, as a company that uses both Macs and PCs, we can see the benefits of both sides. So, if you are thinking of buying a new computer, don’t just consider PCs – have a look at the Macs too. To help you do this here are some comparisons between the two, on a like-for-like basis. 1. A PC is cheaper to buy than a Mac. While you can get an entry level PC for as little as £350 (or less depending on where you look) an entry level Mac is about double that. 2. A Mac is faster and better quality. The operating system on a Mac works much faster than on a PC and uses higher quality components. 3. More application choices on a PC. More than 50,000 applications are available for download from the Microsoft Windows store alone. This is double the amount available for Mac users. 4. More choice of PCs than Macs. Apple computers come with just a few models like the MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac Mini and Mac Pro. With PCs you have much more choice in model, make and spec. 5. Macs are more reliable. Mac enthusiasts may argue that the PCs are less stable than Macs. The majority of software components in Windows are linked with each other whereas the software programs in a Mac separate themselves from each other depending upon the nature of the application. This is one of the reasons why the

users feel less stability while using PCs and Mac are less likely to crash. 6. Macs are less prone to virus attacks and vulnerabilities. Because that majority of computers in the world are PCs/Windows based this is where the hackers and scammers concentrate their time. So if you have a Mac you are less likely to be victim to a virus or vulnerability. 7. You can run PC programs on a Mac. It is possible to install Windows on a Mac while the reverse is nearly impossible. 8. Macs have netter quality video and graphics. The Mac was originally a ‘designers’ machine’ and is still the favourite of anyone in any kind of creative environment. 9. PCs are easier to fix. Due to their design and cost of components, Macs are more expensive to fix if they go wrong and there are fewer Mac specialists out there than PC repair/support companies. (Of course, we do both!) So, you can see that both PCs and Macs have their positives and negatives. For us, the key considerations when comparing the two are price/cost to maintain versus reliability and ease of use. If you can afford it and you want a reliable, easy to use, versatile and high quality media machine, then choose a Mac. If budget is a key consideration and you want a machine that does the basics, such as word processing and Internet browsing, and is easier to repair, then choose a PC. Our next article will look at what to consider when buying a new PC. Bax Computer Services (www.baxcomputers.co.uk)

Keep Kirdford & Wisborough ‘Green’ – update

T

he wait goes on for a second round of Consultation for the Celtique Energie application for an Oil/Gas Exploratory well proposed for land near Boxal Bridge in Kirdford on the border of Wisborough Green Parish. Further information in response to a letter from WSCC has been received but not yet made publicly available. Once it is, a second consultation deadline will be issued and further objections can then be made to the application by email or letter to WSCC quoting reference: WSCC/083/13/KD. Watch this space, the Parish or KKWG websites. However, the same company also replied to questions from the South Downs National Park (SDNP) about their application at Fernhurst and that second round of consultation is underway with a meeting being held by the SDNP Planning Committee to determine the application on 10th July. See the FrackFreeFernhurst website for guidance on how to object and the issues of pressing concern – transport and access, loss of amenity and environmental concerns. Comments must include the reference: SDNP/13/05896/CM. WSCC Minerals Planning Committee met on 29th April in Horsham to consider the latest

application from Cuadrilla to appraise its findings at the Balcombe well site. The outcome was 12 votes for the proposal and 1 against. The decision was made in spite of huge opposition and very cogent objections made at the meeting by members of FEBRA and the Vice Chair of the Parish Council Wisborough Green Farmer’s market: If you want to know more about the local application call in at the monthly market – someone will be available to answer any queries you may have. Landowners in the vicinity of the proposed application site can register at Wrong Move if they do not wish the company to explore under their land. While the Prime Minister is wishing to introduce legislation in the next Parliament which would make it possible for any fracking company to enter any land at any time it is not yet law and such a proposal is likely to be strongly resisted. Watch out for the Folk Against Fracking musical event to be held at Loxwood Parish Hall on 25th October. I urge people to continue to watch the KKWG website www.no-drilling.co.uk for further updates or ring Jill Sutcliffe on (01403) 700395. Dr Jill Sutcliffe

Parish Councillor Vacancy By-Election Why is there a vacancy? A Councillor has resigned from the Council. How is the vacancy filled? l The Council must by law advertise the Parish Councillor vacancy in a conspicuous place for 14 days. If at the end of those 14 days at least ten electors have given notice to the Proper Officer of Horsham District Council of a request for an election to fill the vacancy, then a by-election must be held to fill the vacancy. l If a by-election is not requested, then the Parish Council can proceed to fill the vacancy by co-option. Why has a by-election been called and how much will it cost? Twelve electors came forward to request a by-election. The by-election will cost in region of £6000. When and where is the by-election and who runs it? Thursday 24 July 2014 from 7.00am - 10.00pm at the Billingshurst Centre. Polling cards will be issued by Horsham District Council, who runs the by-election. How can I find out who the candidates are? A notice of persons nominated will be displayed on the Parish Council noticeboards and added to the Council's website. It is the responsibility of the candidates to handle their own canvassing. What happens if there are no candidates, or only one? If there are no candidates, Horsham District Council will re-advertise. If there is only one candidate, the election will be deemed uncontested and that person will be duly elected to the vacancy. The next full Parish Council election is in May 2015. At this time there will be 15 places to fill on the Council. If you have ever considered joining your local Council but are not sure what it involves, why not come along to some meetings between now and next May to see how the Council works and what it does? If you have any questions about the role of a Parish Councillor or the election process please contact the Parish office or one of the current Councillors. Reading through the 'Minutes' section of the Councils web site is also a great way to find out what matters the Council deals with. Next Parish Council Meeting – Wednesday 2 July 2014, 19.30. Billingshurst Community and Conference Centre. Provisional agenda items include possible dog restrictions at Station Road Gardens and Gatwick airspace consultation. Please check the Councils website for the final agenda nearer the time.

100 Mile Walk in 4 days for Tanzania

oppy Maunder, Tara Williams and Megan Speers from Farlington School are walking 100 miles across the South Downs in just four days to raise money for their community service project in Tanzania. The three 15year-olds will be walking the South Downs Way from Winchester to Eastbourne while camping each night and carrying their equipment. The 100 miles is very symbolic because it is the overall average a family of five in Tanzania will walk every day for their various needs. This is a huge challenge; the cumulative ascent is the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest. They are planning to walk an average of 25 miles a day, pitching up tents to appreciate a more basic lifestyle. They came up with this by themselves, determined to do something difficult to gain sponsorship: “If it’s too easy, it’s not worth

sponsoring us,” said the girls. All three have been training for many weeks now, often walking the ten miles home from school and going out for much longer walks on weekends too. The Tanzania trip is a hugely worthwhile experience and a fantastic opportunity for the girls. They will see a little of the country but the main focus of the trip is to help in a community project for a local village. We often take for granted what is always available to us. Help them make their people of Tanzania live happier and healthier lives by sponsoring these young, caring and courageous girls. If you would like to sponsor the girls or offer support please contact them via sydneywood@ btinternet.com or visit: www.gofundme.com/ 100MileWalkPoppyMaunder Poppy Maunder
