elcome to the April issue of Village Tweet. Thoughts are of Easter and school holidays and the question of how to keep the children amused. A glance at our What’s On pages shows there is no excuse to get bored with plenty to do for all the family. Village Tweet is fortunate to have several talented local photographers who often supply superb photographs for our covers. You may have been expecting to see Easter eggs or newly hatched chicks gracing this month’s cover but I’m sure you agree that Rob Warde’s beautiful sunrise shot captures spring’s rejuvenation perfectly. Hot Cross Buns

Food and drink Makes 15-20 buns

Delicious home-made Easter fare

METHOD

1. Put the yeast and sugar into a bowl. Sieve the flour and salt into the same bowl. Slowly add enough of the milk and water mix to achieve pliable dough. Tip out onto a lightly floured surface and knead well for 5 minutes, then put the dough back into the bowl and leave to rise for 1 hour. 2. Incorporate the sultanas, mixed peel (or finely chopped dried apricot or more sultanas if you don’t like mixed peel), orange zest and cinnamon into the dough and leave to rise for 1 hour. 3. Lightly grease a baking sheet. Divide the dough into 15-20 pieces and roll each into a ball. Put them on a baking tray and leave to rest for 1 hour. 4. Set the oven to 220°C/gas 8. 5. To make the crosses for the buns, mix the plain flour with enough water to make a smooth, thick paste. You can either make a piping bag out of parchment paper or use a piping bag with a plain nozzle to pipe the paste onto the buns in a cross-shape. 6. Bake for 25 minutes until golden brown. Combine the sugar and water together to make a syrup and brush this liberally all over the buns. Serve immediately.

INGREDIENTS

For the buns 500 g strong bread flour, plus extra for dusting 11/2 tsp salt 75 g caster sugar 7 g sachet dried yeast 300 ml mixed milk and water 50 g sultanas 100 g raisins Zest of 2 oranges 80 g mixed peel 2 tsp ground cinnamon 75 g plain flour For the crosses 75g plain flour For the glaze 50 g sugar 50 ml water

Why is Spring a Significant Time for Stroke Survivors?

P

eople who have had a stroke can feel very isolated. They are trying to adapt to limited mobility, maybe they are having difficulty expressing themselves, and they frequently suffer from depression. Now imagine – cold wintery days, early darkness, and slippery pavements. You are not going to want to leave your home. The winter can be a very difficult time for people who have had a stroke AND the families who care for them. Carers can also become isolated, unable to leave their loved ones alone, struggling to manage the emotional needs created by depression and still having to cope with normal day-to-day life. Spring arrives and it is time to make a change. Warmer days make going out more appealing. This is where The Phoenix Stroke Club can help. Based in Horsham, this charity offers social activities for stroke survivors in a fun and stimulating environment. Members enjoy a good day out socialising with other stroke survivors and supportive volunteers. Families of stroke survivors often spend a great deal of time caring for their loved one; the Phoenix Stroke Club offers them the chance to take a bit of time for

themselves secure in the knowledge that their loved ones are happy and safe. There are four ways that you to can make a difference: 1. If you or someone you know has had a stroke, give us a call to arrange a home visit to discuss attending the club. 2. You may like to become a volunteer at the club. If you can offer one day a week, and you would like to make new friends at the same time as providing a valuable service, give us a call to arrange a chat. 3. If you would like to make a financial contribution to support the work of The Phoenix Stroke Club give us a call or send us your donation. 4. If you are members of any groups, churches, organisations, talk about us or invite the Manager to come and talk to your group. So, why is the spring a significant time for stroke survivors? Because it is the time when you make a difference. Phone the manager: (01403) 268130 or write to The Phoenix Stroke Club. C/O Forest School. Comptons Lane, Horsham, RH13 5NW. Jackie Mullin, Manager

London to Brighton in 24 hours

D

riving from London to Brighton is a reasonable distance. Walking it would be a real challenge. But that’s exactly what I shall be doing this summer and my target is to do it within 24 hours. The challenge will begin early in Richmond Park, London on 12th May. From there I’ll be walking non-stop for 24 hours, over 62 miles, to finish at Brighton racecourse the following day, all in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer. This will be the third time I’ve raised money for this amazing charity, the furthest I’ve ever walked and will probably be the biggest physical challenge of my life. It will be a real test of stamina and endurance, but nothing compared to the challenge those suffering from breast cancer have to face. And the things you do to prevent blisters while walking. Like wearing my wife’s popsocks under my socks – she does know by the way! But the worst, and the best, bizarrely, is sitting in a cold bath for 15 minutes after a training walk. Horrible to get into but really effective for making a speedier recovery, before a much more welcome

hot shower. But why is a man raising money for Breakthrough, you may ask? Well, on a personal level, I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was young, and I also have two good friends who are survivors. And men aren’t immune either. It’s a cause that’s close to my heart and I want to do what I can to stop other people having to go through it. I’ve had fantastic support from family, friends and work colleagues. Local business PD Motors has also been very generous with their sponsorship – I’m sure I’ll need a complete overhaul after the event! I’m adding a picture or logo of everyone who sponsors me to an online T-shirt and will print and wear it on the day, so everyone who supports me will be with me every step of the way! Anybody wishing to sponsor me should go to www.justgiving.com/Kevin-Guild and follow the secure onscreen directions, or text KGLB57 and £<amount> to 70070. Wish me luck! Kevin Guild

April is

A

pril is National Autism Month. When hearing about autism, many people think of the film Rain Man, or of a child genius who can’t function at all socially. The reality for most people affected by autism is somewhat different. Autism is a developmental disorder which affects the way a person communicates and relates to the world. The causes are not known, and it is a lifelong condition. It is a spectrum, which means while all people with autism will share certain traits, the effect the condition has on them will be different. Some will be able to live independently, while others may need care for the rest of their lives. People with autism have difficulties with social interaction, communication and imagination. Common social mores like sarcasm and jokes are difficult to understand, and figurative speech tends to be taken literally, so the expression ‘cool’ may mean slightly cold to someone with autism, rather than slang for something good. They see the world differently and often feel they don’t fit in, but can’t figure out why. People with autism often have learning disabilities that mask the symptoms of autism. Asperger Syndrome is a form of autism that is not usually accompanied by severe learning disabilities, and people with

Health and wellbeing

Awareness Month it are often of higher than average intelligence, but sufferers may still struggle with social interactions and may have milder learning difficulties such as dyspraxia and dyslexia. Around 1 in 100 people in the UK are on the autistic spectrum. As awareness of autism and Asperger Syndrome grows, diagnosis for children is becoming more common, but for adults it can still be a struggle. The first step in getting a diagnosis would be to talk to a GP. It might help to ring the Autism Helpline (0808 800 4104) to help prepare what to say. The GP will then make a referral to a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist for an assessment and formal diagnosis. They will ask questions about childhood history, day-to-day interactions and so on. There may be more than one appointment before a report is written and official diagnosis is made, but once it is done, further support and services can then be accessed. Organisations like The National Autism Society (www.autism.org.uk) can be a great help. They can provide information about services to support autistic people, such as housing, befriending, employment and education. They also provide support for friends and family of autistic people too. The vast majority of people with autism can lead happy, independent lives, especially if the people around them have knowledge and understanding of the condition. Rita Williams-Hall

Pets

Pet Month It’s National Pet Month: 7th April-7th May

I

have a lovely photo of my mum from the ’sixties, hugging tight her pet mongrel, Sally. She loved that dog, treated her like one of the family and was devastated when she finally had to be put to sleep due to the effects of old age. Now suffering from old age herself, mum can no longer care for a dog but still enjoys the companionship of her pet budgie, Bernard, who gets to hear about her day and always chirrups back in reply. Pets can play a key role in a person’s life, providing companionship, affection and even protection. Children who keep a pet get the opportunity to learn how to love, care about and be responsible for another living creature. Caring for their pet helps in the development of self-discipline. They say that a dog is a man’s best friend and never is this truer than in the case of working and assistance companion animals. Chosen for their social nature, dogs work closely with people in a variety of roles including law enforcement, search and rescue, and farming. As assistance animals, dogs provide help for the visually and hearing impaired, serve as an alert system for impending seizures, and offer additional strength and mobility for the physically disabled. Dogs also provide comfort for some people suffering emotional difficulties. Celebrating 75 years of North Hall

O

n Saturday 16th June 2012 Loxwood village will be holding a one-day family show to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the opening of North Hall and to raise funds for various village organisations such as North Hall, St John the Baptist Church and others who wish to apply for funds. The attractions on the day will include children’s races, egg throwing, target golf, children’s competitions such as painting, photography and miniature garden. For the adults, stalls will be selling a variety of craft items, plants, books, homemade cakes as well as a tombola. To introduce an element of competition, there will be some classes such as flower arranging, cake and jam making as well as photography. Will be holding a Grand Raffle. Tickets will be available prior to the event as well as on the day. We are also holding a 50/50 Auction when we will sell your unwanted quality items in an auction. As the name suggests, 50% of the sale price will go to the seller and 50% towards the Show funds. During the afternoon we will have many side shows such as China Smash, Granny Racing, Hook A Duck, Skittles, Wishing Well, Bottle Fishing and many more. A Fun Dog Show and Agility Demonstration will be

held in a dedicated ring. Nearer the time, programmes will be delivered locally with details of the classes. Refreshments will include a barbeque, bar, cream teas and homemade cakes. Entertainment will be provided by the Slinfold Concert Band. This will be a fun day for all the family and will give Loxwood and other local residents the opportunity to come together, to celebrate the 75 year existence of North Hall, which with its recent refurbishment, has become the centre of many village activities. HELP! To make this day a success, we are looking for some help in various areas: CHINA SMASH. We are looking for as much china, plates, cups, saucers, etc to stock this side show for the afternoon. 50/50 AUCTION. If you have any unwanted quality items that you think will sell well in our auction. TOMBOLA. Prizes for this side show, e.g. bottles of wine, chocolates, unwanted Christmas presents. PLANTS. Do you have any spare plants that you can let us have for our stall? If you can help in any of these areas, or could spare an hour or two on the day, please contact Len Milsom on 752032 or email milsomle@waitrose.com Graham Moore

Faces of Billingshurst – Gary Holder

M

eet Gary Holder, a Coolham based musician. Gary started running a live music club at Coolham Village Hall in 2009. He now runs six acoustic clubs in West Sussex and Surrey. The clubs promote concert and open mic nights. These are informal evenings where local musicians turn up and play to a enthusiastic audiences. Gary was introduced to the world of music by his father, Ian Holder, who was a professional folk musician for several years. Gary plays an old double bass c.1900 called Ms Polly, and has enjoyed walking out on many a stage with her, from small clubs to major venues such as London’s South Bank Centre’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room, plus theatre and Arts Centre stages too,

accompanying Martyn Wyndham-Read and Iris Bishop. Gary’s bass playing hero is Herbie Flowers, who is noted as a member of Blue Mink, T Rex and Sky and as one of Britain’s bestknown session bass-players. I

’ve always wondered what it was that I would do with my life. Whether it’s university straight out of college or a normal job. Instead I decided that I would do something a little different… Last year I decided to take a gap year and, not just sitting around at home, I wanted to travel. I soon heard about ‘Project Trust’ and their volunteering opportunities around the globe so, in search of something different I Kyall with some of the signed up to a selection course and headed up to the Isle of Coll to meet them. I spent a week with 28 complete strangers staying in hostels and guest houses in the pouring rain and buffeting wind but it was the best experience of my life. I never realised an island just off England could be so different and offer so many challenges. My efforts paid off and after my week

in Coll I received a letter saying I had a place. I was overjoyed! But, the challenge has only just begun – I’m fundraising of the behalf of Project Trust along with the other volunteers. Our target is £5,000 each before September and it’s a scary number, so I am asking anyone who can help, anything from small donations to any unused things you may having hanging around your house. Anything would be gladly accepted to help raise group, Isle of Coll 2011 money and of course I will come in person to anyone who wants to help the cause. Thank you for reading my appeal. The Perfect Plant

A

s a plantsman I often get asked to recommend the perfect plant. Now I know the conversation is going to be interesting when I am approached with the phrase, “Do you know anything about plants?” This phrase is usually accompanied with a quizzical scowl, and completed with raised eyebrows. “Now, we want it to flower for twelve months of the year, produce scent in winter (but not too heavy), be available in purple, blue and white, with a splash of pink around Mother’s Day. It must be evergreen, fast growing, tall enough to block out the view of the neighbour’s garage, but not large enough to block out light. It should be able to grow in our heavy clay soil, not require feeding and will never need pruning. It should absolutely not shed leaves onto my husband’s impeccably manicured lawn, and must be able to withstand rabbits, provide a home for birds and ladybirds, but not be susceptible to diseases or pests. The flowers should be self-deadheading, and should provide sweet nectar for bees, but not wasps. Oh, and it must be two metres tall when planted, and not be expensive. Can you recommend a few?”* This could be an April fool, but it’s not: it’s a common request. People want me to give them a long Latin name (the plant, not the enquirer!) but it doesn’t exist, and I’m rather glad. Plants are like friends, they all have different personalities, different requirements and different strengths and weaknesses, but it’s that very variety which makes gardening (and friendship) so rewarding.

GEORGE A NICHOLLS NCHArb

April is a very busy month for most people in the garden, and one of my favourites. The clocks have changed, the days are longer and warmer and plant growth is rapid. There are still some major tasks which can be completed at this time of year, such as cutting back evergreens. Cut back hard, feed and the plant will regenerate over the next few years. If you didn’t feed your plants last month, now is the time to do it. If you are an organic gardener, a handful of chicken manure pellets or blood, fish and bone, are great tonics for your plants. It’s also the time when potatoes can be planted. Some years ago, a helpful guy at our local garden centre demystified the whole potato planting schedule for me – in essence all potatoes are planted right now – traditionally Easter Sunday I think. The first earlies, second earlies and main crop tubers are planted together, it’s just that they are harvested at different times. Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net *Village Tweet’s tip for ‘The Perfect Plant’ is Pittisporum (aka Pittosporum) which ticks most of Lee’s boxes except perhaps colour. A Good Read April’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett The Help – Kathryn Stockett The Help is a book that has mushroomed in popularity by recommendation. If you have read it, chances are that someone had told you how good it was. And if you haven’t read it, chances are that when you do, you will pass the word on to someone else. They will not be disappointed. Set in Mississippi in the 1960s, and recently adapted into a successful film, The Help is told by three women – Aibileen, Minnie and Skeeter – all strong, all proud, but very different. Aibileen works for Miss Leefolt, raising baby Mae Mobley Leefolt as she mourns the death of her own adored son, pouring her love and warmth into the little girl. Minnie struggles to keep a job thanks to her smart mouth, but with a husband and five children she has little choice but to work. They watch the white women who employ them; they raise their children, cook their meals, clean their houses, and know their secrets. Skeeter, not yet married, seems destined to become one of these women – yet for her, the memory of Constantine, the ‘help’ who raised her, awakens a curiosity about the lives of Aibileen, Minnie and the countless others like them. The initial catalyst is the Home Help Sanitation Initiative, proposed by queen bee Miss Hilly Holbrook, which aims to ensure separate bathrooms for the help. Everyone, according to Miss Hilly, knows that this is essential to prevent the spread of disease. Prompted by unease, and a deep desire to break into journalism, Skeeter sets out to tell the life stories of Aibileen and Minnie, in their own words. Stockett uses the backdrop of the Civil Rights

movement and the setting of small-town Mississippi to offset the stories that Aibileen, Minnie and eventually many others tell. The story which unfolds offers an insight into how large scale change can sometimes have just a tiny impact on everyday lives. Each voice is distinctive and each character beautifully drawn. Much is shown, rather than told, leaving the reader to imagine the lives beyond the outlines given. It may sound like a cliché, but this book will genuinely make you laugh and cry… and think, which is perhaps the most important element of all. Read it. The Pirate Cruncher – Jonny Duddle Look closely at the very first pictures in this book. Is there something strange about the fiddler who wanders the narrow streets of a tiny Cornish fishing village, singing a song about treasure? Perhaps, but Captain Purplebeard and his crew do not notice, and soon they are sailing off in search of a mysterious island, following the intricate map provided on the endpapers of the book. On the way, the fiddler sings them directions, advice and warnings, which they heed with varying degrees of success. Even when their numbers seem to mysteriously diminish, Purplebeard presses on... This is an incredibly detailed picture book, ideal for 3- to 6-year-olds. On the first reading, the song of the fiddler carries you along as surely as it does the pirates, so much so that the ending is a genuine surprise. By the second, third and fourth readings (and believe me, there will be these and many more!) the clues become more apparent, but the whole thing is still enormous fun. Destined to become a firm family favourite.

Little Tweeters

The Piglets Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …

B

ig Dottie sighed. Here they came again. All twelve of them. Squealing, snapping and scrapping. And hungry. Always hungry. Always wanting to eat. And she was so tired of them. They just would not leave her alone. If she went into her ark, they came too, squabbling over which teat they wanted. If she slept in the sun, they ran round her and made noises. If Sally put out her food, there they were, pushing and shoving to eat hers. She often ended up giving them a hard butt with her face just to get a mouthful. Sally and Anne had been talking about separating them and for Dottie that time just couldn’t come soon enough. She was seriously FED UP! Two weeks old You wouldn’t have thought so six weeks ago. She had been a bit disappointed when she hadn’t won the first baby award, being beaten by Aunty Jenny the sheep, but that changed the very next weekend. She was the first pig to have babies at the farm. It started the Saturday very early in the morning, when she had three or four by herself. Sally came over and had a look and then came Anne, who was so delighted and pleased that she spent most of the day in the ark stroking Dottie and keeping her company as one by one the piglets were born. By Saturday night Dottie had had fifteen piglets. Unfortunately, one was born dead, one she lay on (oops!) and the next day one had died because it had been very, very cold overnight. But there were twelve. Twelve lovely little babies and she adored them. She was a good mum, Dottie was. She looked after them, kept them warm and fed them, only coming out to have her dinner and then straight back in. It wasn’t long before they were moving around and started stepping out of the ark. Because it was so cold, Sally put a barrier up at the door of the ark to keep them in. By the time they were three weeks old, though, they were venturing out and exploring the pen. They were so cute. The piglets grew and became much more adventurous. They were allowed down into the adjoining pen, where they would eventually live. They would race each other around the ark down the pen through the gate around the other ark

36

(which had been moved down there for them) and back up the pen squealing all the way. This racing would wear them out – for five minutes they would all flop down, have a rest, before starting all over again. The sheep and the dogs were mesmerised. George and Magnus who weren’t much bigger than the piglets thought it was great fun. Then Sally started to feed them weaner food in the preparation time for the big separation. They scoffed it. They squabbled over it. They fought one another over everything – food, places and mud. They tried pushing Dottie out of the way. They wrangled constantly with one another. They pushed and shoved one another. All in all they were still cute but so busy they wore everyone out – including themselves. As the days got warmer and longer they could often be found in a heap on top of the hay bales they were slowly demolishing, basking in the sun. Dottie stayed inside her ark away from them, glad of a bit of peace. But before long they would all pile into the ark squealing and squabbling. The noise was terrific. Poor Dottie! But finally the day came. The gate between the two pens was closed with Dottie on one side, twelve somewhat larger piglets on the other. Dottie sighed with relief. Peace at last! However, it was short lived. After running around a bit and having a good play, the piglets stood by the gate. They started complaining, little grunts at first and then they got louder and louder. “We want our Mummy!” they squealed. “No,” said Sally and she put some food down for them. They immediately forgot about Dottie and devoured the food, and wanted more. Sally obliged. Then she gave them a big drink of water and they slurped that too. Evening was falling so the piglets drifted one by one into their own ark and settled down for the night, warm and toasty with one another. Soon there was slight snores, and the occasional grunt. Dottie settled down for the night too. As she stretched out, she smiled as she realised she didn’t miss her babies one bit. Not even one little bit! Yvonne Fleece Photo: Grahame Pearson

Safe web surfing for your children More sound computer and IT advice from Simon Thomas

K

ids are curious and, just as when they were toddlers, are bound to get into things you’d rather they didn’t. Without certain measures in place, your kids can access everything on the Web. And, though nothing can replace your guidance and vigilance, there are some tools to help ensure your kids are seeing the better things the Internet has to offer. Filtering and blocking programs prevent access to websites based on keywords or site names. An Internet filter is a software or hardware product that prevents kids (or anyone) from accessing content on websites that may not be appropriate. By using keywords, it filters out sites defined by those words. Blocking software impedes access to sites designated as ‘bad’. Some companies let users customise their lists, but most search engine blocks and filters rely on prescreening. Blocks and filters are not foolproof. Determined kids can find ways of getting around the programs. And some filters deny access to perfectly acceptable material. The Internet is the hardest environment in which to control age-appropriate information and images. In an unfiltered environment, kids can (and will) type ‘sex’ or ‘drugs’ into a search box and find all

sorts of sites you would rather they didn’t. But even the most innocent searches can retrieve unintended results, doubly true when kids search for images. Given the explicit nature of some sites, you might want to investigate filters or programs that direct younger kids to safe sites. Some ISPs offer fully filtered service, but ‘one size fits all’ might not be the right choice for your family. There are also various software programs that offer different levels of filtering. The two most popular browsers, Firefox and Internet Explorer, offer content filters. Google, Yahoo!, and Bing have built-in filters (separate from the browser) that you can set. The best ones let you password-protect your settings. You can even filter search results on YouTube using its Safety Mode feature. Ultimately, good old-fashioned common sense is the best search filter. Simply tell your kids not to click on something that looks inappropriate or if they are not sure to talk to you about it. Let your child know that you are interested in their online activity. Participate if possible and discuss what they do online openly without being intrusive. Simon Thomas (techgeek@tech-geek.co.uk)

Equine

Buying your first horse

B

uying your first horse is a very exciting time! There are several ways of acquiring a new equine friend, here is a short guide… Private sale. This is probably the most popular method of buying a horse, it is very much a case of buyer beware, because you are not covered by the Sale of Goods Act when buying from a private individual. A quick Google search of a telephone number can be very useful as some unscrupulous dealers have been known to pass themselves off as private sellers. Dealer. Horse dealers have often rather unfairly been given a great deal of bad press. Reputable dealers will have a reputation to uphold and will have an interest in matching you with the right horse, and often offer a warranty scheme whereby you can exchange the horse if it proves unsuitable within a certain time limit. There are, however, some very unscrupulous dealers about and having a chat with the local equine fraternity, or asking on online forums will give you an idea who to avoid. It is essential that you are totally honest with a dealer about your riding ability before viewing – you don’t want to be put on board a fresh, super fit competition horse if all you want is a happy hack to plod around on! The plus point about a dealer’s yard is that you can try several horses in one place. Sales and auctions. A very risky way to buy if you are a novice. There are some very nice animals going through sales rings at the moment due to the economic downturn, but it takes an expert eye to spot them. Some horses end up at sales as a last resort; it has been known for dangerous animals to end up going through the ring as well as those with serious and often degenerative veterinary problems which will be passed on to an unsuspecting buyer. The better sales have trial facilities and will offer a small warranty should the horse prove unsuitable, but you will have a very short window of time in which to get the horse tried and vetted. Viewing. So, you have seen a likely horse advertised and have asked the questions on the phone and all sounds good. Now is the time to arrange a viewing. The most important point is to take someone knowledgeable and sensible with you. A trusted friend or instructor who won’t let you buy a blind, three-legged donkey out of pity is ideal! When you get to the yard have a look at the

38

horse carefully, ask to see the passport and check the description and silhouette matches the horse you are looking at. Look for sweat marks which may indicate the horse has been worked before your arrival. Check to see if water is available to the horse; some unscrupulous sellers withhold water to make the horse seem quieter. If you like what you see ask to see the horse tacked up. Take note of how he reacts to the tack and what tack he is wearing – a young horse in severe tack should set alarm bells ringing. Ask the vendor to ride the horse first – if they are reluctant ask yourself why. If you are happy with what you see then you can try the horse for yourself. Make sure you have adequate rider insurance as all horses are unpredictable. If the horse is not the one for you thank the seller for their time and tell them there and then. Vetting. Once you have found a horse you are happy with you can then arrange a vetting. The purpose of the examination is to check for any problems that may make the horse unsuitable for what you want to do with it. Make sure you use an independent vet from that of the seller. Be honest with the vet about what you intend on doing with the horse. It is sensible to have a blood sample taken at the vetting as this can be screened if there are any problems at a later date. Most insurance companies insist on a fivestage vetting before they will cover you for vets’ bills on your policy. Happy horse hunting! And just for fun here’s a few advertising terms explained: Bombproof = blind, deaf and lame in all four legs! Has seen hounds = was once hacked past a kennels! Forward going = runaway! ry Well mannered = hasn’t kicked or bitten le d anyone for a week! d y, sa ha Professionally schooled = hasn’t , k ly ge bitten or kicked anyone for a month! ac pp illa t e , u Jeanette Douglas. A Spring Lunch Care Comfort Company visits Sumners Ponds, 13th March

T

ina Montague, who runs The Care Comfort Company invited Editor Grahame of Village Tweet to come along to a spring lunch for a dozen of her retired gentlefolk clients.

Sumners Ponds laid on an excellent spread of sandwiches, sausages and mini-pizzas followed by cakes and a never ending supply of tea which inevitably led to a queue for the loo! Sadly the weather was not as warm as it had been of late so lunch was taken inside though it did brighten up later for an amble around the lake. Towards the end of lunch Tina gave a touching speech thanking those who came along and also her carers for all the hard work they do for the elderly. She was proud of the fact that she had never received a call from a client saying a carer was late or didn’t turn up. “Well, I didn’t like to say, but…” commented one wag! “Not only am I committed to care in the home,” Tina continued, “but to get my clients out and to feel they belong to a group and enjoy the sunshine and a lovely lunch is just as important to me.”

The event, which was non-profit-making, was much appreciated by all present, the eldest of whom, Olive Ayres, was 99 and looking forward to receiving her telegram from the Queen later this year. Several of those present knew each other, having met on Care Comfort Company’s popular day trips, and all enjoyed making new friends. Grahame Pearson

Day Care Centre for over 65s every Tuesday

H

elp and Company was set up in 2008 by Helen Shepherd, who recognised there was a need for a service, and a level of support, that fell between what a family was able to provide and that which was provided by other health care professionals. Having worked within the care industry since 1994, Helen realised that most people want to remain in the comfort of their own home but that some form of assistance is needed to achieve that aim. Quite often this simply means help in and around the home, preparing meals, assisting with shopping trips, visits to the doctor, dentist, etc., just being there for a friendly chat or dealing with any of the problems that arise as part of day to day life. This is what Help and Company provides. However, at the beginning of this year Help and Company also opened a Day Care Centre in Billingshurst’s Community and Conference Centre. Not only does this give you something different to look forward to but it also gives your carer some support and/or respite from the care they provide by taking over for the day. This allows them to have peace of mind to take time out and to recharge their batteries!

The Day Care Centre is open every Tuesday between 10:00am and 3:30pm. It is aimed at people over 65 including those who have early dementia or memory problems, those who need to get away from the isolation felt in their house or those who need some variety in their lives. Refreshments and a home cooked two-course lunch are available plus a warm, safe, welcoming environment in which to enjoy your visit. Help and Company offer a free trial session which will allow you to sample some of the activities which are on offer every Tuesday. Their unique attitude and professional approach allows them to make a substantial and distinctive impact in the lives of many people. They have a large number of clients and carers but, very importantly, they strongly believe in matching only one or two carers, all of whom are enhanced CRB checked, to each client. To arrange a visit to the Day Care Centre, or to discuss help at home, please call the number shown below. Further days will be available soon. Community – Smallholders

Diary of a ‘Commuter’ Smallholder The continuing diary of Michaela Giles, a Billingshurst smallholder

W

ell, we still haven’t got any lambs yet this year; we did purchase a new ram lamb last year (Jimmy) and so maybe he took a bit of time to work out what he was doing. Our old chap used to look at his watch constantly from the beginning of September in anticipation of working! We have always looked forward to lambing but this year is going to be very different as we have no idea until lambing starts if we will be affected by this new Schmallenberg virus that is primarily plaguing the East and South. There have only been a few cases in West Sussex so we Neil with show girl Rose II may be lucky. This year we will be relieved when lambing is over, which is a shame as it is one of the rewards in smallholding. The remainder of the lambs from last year went off to our butcher and the field looks really bare with only 19 sheep in it. One of the lambs was a very late arrival and Our butcher said he couldn’t charge full price as it was not much bigger than a rabbit! We keep the ram in with our ewes all year round and the lambs used to use him as a trampoline and apart from when he had a fair few all jumping on him he used to just sit there. One year we had a lamb stuck on the wrong side of the fence and he didn’t come down at feed time until we spotted him and rescued the lamb. Here’s hoping Jimmy has the same attitude to his babies as the previous ones.

We have had some more piglets born since the last Village Tweet, all went well with the first delivery and mum and babies are all well. The second pig to give birth was a first-time mum and she had a bit of a tough time for the first 24 hours and, bless her, managed to kill five of her eleven piglets by rushing back to the ark every time she left it to eat, drink or poo at such speed they didn’t have time to get out of the way. I’m pleased to say she has now calmed down and the remaining six are all doing well, she even lets us in the ark with her for cuddles. We have experienced this before a few years ago and that sow was fine the next time as she knew what to expect. Death unfortunately is one aspect of being a smallholder that you have to reluctantly accept. New pig movement rules which are now all in electronic format. The system is still new and has had a few hiccups but it seems to be working well now and I must say I prefer it to the old paper system which required me remembering to buy stamps and post documents. It will be the only way to move pigs legally from the 1st April so look it up on www.eaml2.org.uk if you need to know how to do it. Oh! Our Brahmas are still not laying any eggs for us to incubate which is very frustrating. They are all in fine health and eating well so it must be the amount of daylight – roll on British Summer Time! Returning to Billingshurst, by popular demand:

Los Endos – performing the music of Genesis Los Endos performed at Billingshurst in June last year. They were so good that in the interval - I re-booked them to perform this summer. Their set-list has changed a little, but their light show, sonic perfection and accurate rendition of Genesis classics from the Gabriel/Hackett era remain unchanged. Tickets are now on sale at Reception and online, too.

Saturday 12 May We operate a licenced bar & online ticket sales are [very simple!] via www.wegottickets.com In April our art exhibition will be a selection of paintings by Karen Munck, whose Blue Doorway is shown to the left. Ted Poole – whose work was very popular last Spring – returns in May (his painting Old Town, Crete, is to the right). The Weald School will display the best GCSE and A Level work between 22 June and 6 July – and last year’s work was excellent.

French classes - starting on Monday 28th May Are you looking for a refresher course before your holiday, a class for beginners to get you started or just a class where you will - at last! - be able to practice your conversational French? Look no further; contact La Capucine for more details and to book a place. Depending on interest, numbers and ability, one or two classes will be available. Telephone 07979 750134 or email lacapucine@ymail.com
