elcome to the April issue of Village Tweet, bursting with things to do and places to go this Easter. There are events and activities for children, adults and all the family, mostly listed in our What’s On pages but many within the main body of the magazine. Perhaps it is because we have had such a wet and dismal winter – the wettest since records began – that many of our advertisers have picked up on the Easter theme. Yes, of course, it is a great way to make an ad eye-catching but I think it’s more than that – it’s a way of sharing the feel-good factor that Easter – and spring – brings with it. Fish Pie
A delicious family supper Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time: 45 minutes. Serves 4-6
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180 fan/gas mark 6. Put the potatoes in a saucepan and pour over enough water to cover them. Salt lightly and bring to the boil and then simmer until tender. When cooked, allow to drain thoroughly, then mash with the milk and butter. Season with ground black pepper. 2. Meanwhile, place the butter, flour and spring onions in a large pan and heat gently until the butter has melted, stirring regularly. Cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the milk. Bring to the boil. Keep stirring to prevent the sauce sticking or becoming lumpy. Cook for 3-4 minutes until it's thickened. 3. Remove from the heat and stir in the fish, prawns, snipped chives, sweetcorn and peas. Spoon into an ovenproof dish. 4. Spoon the potato evenly over the top. At this point you can let it cool, then cover and freeze the pie for another day. Defrost before cooking, then sprinkle with cheddar cheese if using. Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden and bubbling at the edges.

The Horsham-based West Sussex Philharmonic Choir will be bringing J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion to life at 7.30pm on Saturday 5th April at St Mary’s Parish Church, Horsham. The St. John Passion is the first of four settings of the Passion story which Bach wrote, one based on each Gospel, of which only St. John and St. Matthew survive intact. The St. John Passion is smaller in scale than that of St. Matthew, but is more dramatic in style and has a greater quality of tenderness. A narrator (tenor) relates the Passion story, starting in the garden where Jesus is betrayed, while other soloists portray the key figures in the drama. The choir plays two roles, one representing a crowd of mocking onlookers, the other expressing devotion and pity for Jesus’ suffering. A recurring feature throughout is the appearance of Chorales. Each of these uses a well-known (at the time) Lutheran hymn tune. Bach recycles them as choir pieces and enhances them with subtle harmonies to give emphasis to the meaning of the words. Tickets are £14 and available on the door, or from Horsham Piano Centre, Waterstones, or The Candy Box

Easter Eggs and Easter Bunnies
E
ggs have been used as symbols at festivals since before the time of Jesus, but are now particularly synonymous with Easter and the story of the resurrection. Eggs are said to represent new life, and for Christians when they are cracked open, they stand for the empty tomb following Jesus’ rising. Eggs are also considered special, because although they do not seem alive they have life within them – especially in springtime when chicks hatch out. In previous times people gave gifts of eggs carved from wood or precious stones. It is only in the last 100 years or so that sweet eggs have been eaten. The size and range of chocolate eggs available seems to increase every year. The tallest chocolate egg was 10.39 metres tall and made in Italy in 2011. It weighed 7.2 kilograms and was 9.6 metres at its widest point! It is not known exactly who first created the story of the Easter bunny, but it seems to have its origins in Germany. It was first mentioned in German texts in the 16th Century. In the 1700s German immigrants told stories when they went to America of egg-laying rabbits, and they encouraged children to use caps and bonnets to make nests which the Easter bunny would fill with coloured eggs – if they’d been good. The
first edible Easter bunnies appeared in Germany during the early 1800s and were made of pastry and sugar. The symbol of the rabbit was probably chosen because of its associations with fertility and spring. It is believed that Eostre, the Anglo Saxon God of Spring, had a hare as a companion. In addition to having Easter Egg Hunts to search for the eggs left by the Bunny, another common Easter activity is egg rolling. This is done using real hard-boiled eggs, and time is usually spent decorating them beforehand. In years gone by the eggs were dyed using onion skin, today’s painting process is much easier. In the UK egg rolling is generally done by rolling eggs down a hill, and the winner is the one whose egg rolls further or survives the most rolls. In the early nineteenth century in Northern Ireland, egg rolling was described as ‘trindling’ or ‘trundling.’ Another traditional game involves holding your egg in the palm of the hand and banging against your opponent’s egg. The loser is the one whose egg breaks first. In the USA one of the most well known events is held on the White House Lawn, and involves parents and children pushing eggs along through the grass with wooden spoons. Susan Brookes-Morris

Budding artists and entrepreneurs welcome spring at Billingshurst Primary School
T
he children of Billingshurst Primary School said farewell to winter to herald the arrival of spring at their annual Spring Fair on 6th March. Pupils were involved in all aspects of the event with budding artists invited to design a winning poster to promote the Fair. The competition was sponsored by Fowlers Estate Agents, Billingshurst, for a third consecutive year. Winners of the poster competition were chosen from each Year Group, with two overall winners selected. The Key Stage 1 winner was Henry Devereux and in Key Stage 2 the winning entry was by Isabella Holland; both delighted artists were presented with Book Tokens to the value of £10 from Fowlers. All other Year Group winners received an Easter egg and make your own Easter card packs. The winning designs were proudly displayed throughout the school and at Fowlers. The Spring Fair proved to be bigger and better than ever raising over £1,500 for the school. Enterprising students raised funds by preparing and running stalls of seasonal goodies representing each class. Back by popular demand, Year 6 pupils served drinks and tasty snacks in the French Café, sponsored by Kavanagh’s Budgens. This year the Fair had a ‘maths’ theme to
celebrate 2014’s Year of Marvellous Maths at Billingshurst Primary School, which aims to inspire and encourage all pupils. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher, comments, “Each year the teaching staff are always impressed by the ingenuity displayed by pupils in generating ideas to raise funds at the Spring Fair. The children also take great pride in running the stalls and making sure all our visitors have a good afternoon. Pupils are also involved in promoting the event via the poster competition and we are delighted to be working with Fowlers Estate Agents to encourage the children to express their artistic talents; the winning entries can be seen on display in the school.” Keith Hutchinson, Manager at Fowlers Estate Agents added, “We are very proud to sponsor this competition for the third year in a row. As ever we were extremely impressed with the entries and the creativity of the pupils. It is a fantastic opportunity to work with our local school and support the wider community.” Bik-Kay Talbot, Co-Chair of BPSCA

Billingshurst & District Lions Club supports Great Daffodil Appeal
M
embers of the Billingshurst Lions Club supported the Marie Curie Cancer Care Great Daffodil Appeal with fund-raising collections in Billingshurst on 1st March. Every penny collected will be spent in local communities helping to provide free nursing care to terminally ill patients in their own homes and Marie Curie hospices. Lions Club president, Mike Bobker, said, “One hour of free nursing care can be provided for someone by raising just £20. Giving a small donation and wearing the iconic Marie Curie daffodil pin really can make a big difference.” The Community Fundraiser at Marie Curie Cancer Care said, “Terminal illnesses touch everyone and Lions fundraising will enable Marie Curie to deliver additional nursing care from the generosity of local people in Billingshurst.” The Great Daffodil Appeal
has huge public support and has raised more than £70 million since 1986. Marie Curie Cancer Care chose Lions Clubs British Isles & Ireland to be its first official partner for the Great Daffodil Appeal last year to help reach a target of £1 million over three years. The Great Daffodil Appeal has raised more than £70 million since 1986. Every £20 raised helps fund an hour of Marie Curie nursing care, which is provided free of charge to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses. In addition to Lions Clubs collections, daffodil pins can be picked up from Marie Curie collectors, the charity’s shops and other local retailers. Further information about the Great Daffodil Appeal can be found at www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil

Keep Kirdford & Wisborough ‘Green’ – update
F
ollowing on from previous articles in Village Tweet in September and December 2013 (viewable online), the Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green (KKWG) group would like to give an update to the community about the current application being made by Celtique Energie for Oil/Gas Exploration – fracking – at Northup copse to the south of Boxal Bridge. The current position is that things are currently stalled. Briefly, the company applied in September with a closing date for members of the public of 24th October extended until 22nd November for the Parishes to comment given the huge size (over 1,000 pages) of the Environmental Statement. Both Kirdford and Wisborough Green Parishes objected unanimously to the application. The period for consultation finished on 3rd December but on the 4th, West Sussex County Council Planning Department wrote to the company with four A4 sides of questions to be answered in
Sports Injury Techniques Emma Wild Mobile Sports Injury Therapist
Injury Assessment, Identification & Treatment Joint Mobilisations & Sports Massage Rehabilitation/Pre-habilitation Programs
order that the information required to make such a decision was made available. The dates for this information being provided have slipped from 31st December to 14th January to 28th February to 25th June. Why this is material is that once WSCC are satisfied that such information has been furnished they will take a week to validate it and then issue the dates for a minimum of four weeks further consultation during which local residents will get another chance to comment. I should also add that the South Downs National Park also sent a list of questions to the company pertaining to the application they made at Fernhurst which, as it is located within the National Park, will be assessed by the National Park Planning Committee. I urge people to continue to watch the KKWG website www.no-drilling.co.uk for further updates or ring Jill Sutcliffe on (01403) 700395. Dr Jill Sutcliffe

Social Media Problems
here is a joke doing the rounds which goes something like: The best thing about being a teen in the 1980s is that we made all our big mistakes before the internet was invented! There is much truth in that. When your teen tweets or posts a picture to Instagram, they probably don’t think about how it might affect them tomorrow, let alone how it might affect their chances of getting a job. The hard truth is, that what we send into cyberspace can be difficult to erase. There have been some recent news stories about young people losing jobs, or not even getting an interview, based solely on what someone from the company has seen on their MySpace or Facebook page. Many employers now use social media profiling to screen potential employees. Vetting a candidate’s social media profiles can give employers an insight into someone’s personality, character or work ethic. If your teen’s profile is not set to ‘private’ it will be accessible to a potential employer and their content found through search engines like Google. This is true for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It may be unfair and discriminatory but it happens, and even fairly innocuous material might be judged harshly by someone who doesn't know the person involved. You can help by getting involved in your child’s social media presence. Become familiar with the tools they use, and offer advice to save them from making mistakes which may be difficult to correct. The good news is that you can help your teen clean up their social media sites before they get ready to apply for jobs. Take an afternoon to go through each social media profile and delete any inappropriate photos or comments. There are some software products which can help, like SimpleWash, though these generally don’t apply to photos.
So does this mean you should stop your teen from using any social media? Most experts say that this isn’t necessary. In fact a well-handled social media profile can be very beneficial. It allows young people to connect with those in the industry they’re trying to break into. By engaging with other professionals they can show that they’re both serious and knowledgeable. Louise Addison
Top Tips for Teens l Keep just one social media profile where you post personal information. l Make sure main profile photos and cover photos are conservative. l If something is even slightly questionable, do not post it publicly. l Be careful what you ‘like’ or comment on. If the person posting has a public profile your comment will be visible too. l Make your public image one you’d be happy to show to anyone, even your grandmother. l Don’t accept friend requests from people you don’t know, or if you must, then put them on a ‘restricted’ list. Remember that privacy filters on social networking sites are subject to change and are not fail-safe. Check filters regularly. l The top tip to take away from the experts is to keep your profile private!

Local Lass Lucie – TeenStar in the making!
Y
ou will recall Village Tweet featured 15year-old Lucie Francis in the October issue (viewable online). Billingshurst’s young singer is hoping it’s second time lucky when she takes to the stage on 5th April. The Year 11 student from Tanbridge House School made it through to the Regional Finals of National Singing Competition Open MicUK in October last year, singing her heart out in front of celebrity judges and a large audience in the Grand Hall in Hove. Sadly, she just missed out on a spot in the Area Finals and the opportunity to progress to the Grand Final. This year, Lucie is competing in TeenStar, the same competition won by Xfactor finalist Luke Friend. She hopes that her training from the Act Too Arts Academy in Horsham, and the Pulborough Branch of Sussex Youth Theatre will help her sing her way through the
Davis Foot Care Clinic Emma Davis

Area Finals. Lucie says, “I loved performing in Open MicUK, and even if I don’t get through to the next round of TeenStar, at least I will have had the opportunity to perform in a great venue. It’s a valuable experience, and you get feedback from the judges to help you improve your performance.” Once again, Lucie needs the support from her family and friends. Acts with the top scores from the Judges go through to the Area Finals automatically. The remaining acts gain their place by having their ticket sales added on to the judge’s scores. Each £8 Ticket counts as a vote for Lucie. Tickets can be purchased by emailing charliuk@sky.com. Further information on Act Too can be found at www.acttoo.co.uk, and Sussex Youth Theatre www.sussexyouththeatre.co.uk. Charlotte Francis (Lucie’s mother)

Book reviews / About the house
A Good Read April’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Sophie’s Bakery for the Broken Hearted – Lolly Winston 36-year-old Sophie has just lost her husband, Ethan, to cancer. She had only been married a few years and is devastated. Lolly Winston takes us on a journey through the emotional rollercoaster of bereavement and its different stages, from denial to acceptance. At first Sophie is a wreck, someone who sleeps all day and guzzles cartons of ice cream for breakfast. When she shows up for work, distraught in her bathrobe and bunny slippers, she finds she’s not only lost her husband but her job in a Silicon Valley PR firm. Distraught, Sophie leaves California for Ashland, Oregon and through the fog of her grief starts to rebuild her life. She discovers a previously hidden talent and opens the bakery of the title. Along the way she has to deal with her mother-in-law and also collects a rag-taggle bunch of new friends who variously try to seduce her, support her and burn her house down. As she juggles her business with her new life, Sophie proves that with enough humour and bravado it is possible to rebuild a life after a devastating loss. And who’s to say she can’t find love again in the process… Lolly Winston knows how to tug the heart strings. Sophie’s grief is present throughout the
book, and heartbreakingly raw, yet the book is funny, touching and uplifting by turn. Even at her lowest, Sophie maintains a wry sense of humour: on an application form which asks who to contact in case of emergency, she finds that she has no name to enter so writes ‘George Clooney’. Keep the Kleenex handy – this novel will have even the hardest-hearted reader in tears. The Magic Paintbrush – Julia Donaldson and Joel Stewart Julia Donaldson is peerless as a writer for threeto six-year-olds yet her story themes appeal to adults too, which means they don’t mind reading them again and again. She’s as much a master of ‘distilling language’ as any poet, making every word count. In addition she uses the natural rhythm of the spoken voice – which is what makes her stories ideal for reading aloud. The Magic Paint Brush is an immensely charming tale and the illustrations are quite beautiful and appropriately Chinese in style. Shen is a little girl who is given the gift of a magic brush which makes everything she paints come to life. But with this power comes great responsibility. How will this smart little girl deal with a greedy emperor who wants her to help make him even richer? The results are delightful, beautiful and poetic.

A New Year and a New Look for The North Singers! 2014 sees a new image for The North Singers in Loxwood with their new logo and website. Designed by Silverback Studios in the village, this new look brings the choir into the 21st Century. It is also hoped that it will make the choir more accessible and encourage more singers to join. The website has now been launched and can be found at: thenorthsingers.com The choir also has a new Music Director, Rosemary Hensor, GRSM, ARCM, PGCE from Horsham. Rosemary has her own thriving piano teaching practice in Horsham and is involved with four different choirs, either as a singing member, accompanist or (now) as Music Director. The ethos of the choir is to sing and have fun and is open to
anyone. No auditions are required, just come and sing. The choir is currently looking, in particular, for more male singers in both tenor and bass sections as well as altos – however, all are welcome. The choir’s repertoire includes a wide variety of popular songs and songs from musicals. African songs, spirituals and has also sung with other choirs to sing choral works by John Rutter, Karl Jenkins, Vivaldi, Parry and others. The North Singers are supported by Plaistow Parish Council and Loxwood Village Fête Committee and, now by Harwoods Group as Main sponsor and Silverback Studios. Little Tweeters! / About the house
And the Lord of the Farm is…
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
I
n autumn last year Big Bob nudged Utha Pen Dragon with his large head. Utha sidestepped. Again Bob nudged Utha with a little more menace this time, his head and huge curved horns pushing that little bit harder. Utha Big Bob – Lord of the Farm… sidestepped again and retaliated by pushing Bob with his huge horns gently on his flank. This pushing and shoving went on for some time. At times Utha moved away – just a short distance mind, and always looking at Bob – but Big Bob always followed him, and started nudging again, only the nudges were now serious pushes. This ‘dance’ went on in various parts of the paddock until finally Bob put his head down, stepped back a few paces, and charged (well, lumbered) forward and rammed Utha on the side. Because Bob was BIG, Utha staggered back a few feet. Bob shook his head and lowered it and took a few more steps back. This time Utha did the same. There was a moment of silence and then, a THWACK!, as their two sets of curved and very big horns cracked together. Next thing both rams staggered back, shook and then lowered their heads again and did exactly the same thing with another resounding THWACK! Again they lowered their heads, but by this time, Utha was bleeding from a cut above his eye. It must have hurt, because he suddenly walked away very quickly followed by Bob. Thankfully because Utha was younger, lighter and had longer legs he covered more ground and got away. Then they both put their heads down and munched on the grass as if nothing had happened. Boys being boys they wanted to be most popular with the girls so this power struggle was repeated all the while the ewes were looking for a husband, but
after they all got in lamb, it should have stopped. But it didn’t. Big Bob was getting old. A Southdown with horns he was heavy and shortlegged, a solid ram with plenty of character. He was …not if Utha gets his way! very popular with the ladies and made sure he always had first pick. His lambs were all cute, solid and had lovely wool. Utha on the other hand was a much lighter Welsh Mountain Sheep with huge horns which got bigger every year, long legs and a very patrician profile with a lovely ruff down his chest. He too was popular with the ladies, especially the young ones. His lambs were smaller, quicker and cute too. As winter progressed, and the ewes went into the nursery with their lambs, Utha began to challenge Bob more and more. Utha was smart. He knew if he went head-to-head with Bob, he’d get his head split open again. So he rammed him from the side and then, one afternoon when Bob was not looking, Utha smashed him hard against his front shoulder. Bob lost his footing and because he was so heavy he collapsed over on his side. “There!” yelled Utha, “I did it old man”. Bob had real difficulty getting to his feet and hung his head. That had never happened to him before. He felt very depressed and moped about for several days. Utha wasn’t happy with just pushing Bob over, he started making Bob stay outside when they were brought into the shelter at night. Bob didn’t mind that too much as he was warm anyway. Big Bob also had a nice little secret that Utha didn’t know about. Bob had got to Kinsy the last ewe first. His would be the FIRST and the LAST lamb to be born this year. “Put that in your rumen and chew it,” he muttered to the arrogant Utha. “You aren’t such a big shot after all!” Yvonne Fleece Photos: Grahame Pearson

Storrington Conservation Society
O
ur regular working party met on 1st March to tidy up the paths at The Glade. Armed with wellies and wheelbarrows, wood chips were spread where the paths had become mud tracks. We hope walkers will no longer have to squelch their way. The coffee break was welcome as usual, giving chance to enjoy the spring sun and to view the habitat, which is being managed for the benefit of wild life. A past achievement of the Society was the creation of the Riverside Walk, which runs along the bank of the Storr from one end of the village to the other. This was done in partnership with Horsham District Council and Storrington and Sullington Parish Council. Our chairman, Mick Denness, rightly describes it as “A wonderful walk for people of all ages to enjoy”. Our next work day is to be on Saturday 5th April at Fryern Dell from 10am to 3pm for tree management and clearing of invasive vegetation. A longer session than usual (though some may only manage the morning), so as to get as much done as possible. A final opportunity there before the summer.
The Society also arranges talks and social events. On 22nd February we had two interesting illustrated talks in the Village Hall. The first was by Mark Lamey, who is researching the history of Fryern Dell. He told the story of Fryern House and the grounds which now form The Dell. Then Fran Southgate from Sussex Wildlife Trust spoke very informatively, amongst other things, about flood plains and catchment areas, of great interest in the present climate. On Friday 16th May there is to be a tractor tour of Knepp Castle Estate, including a chance to see the ancient breeds which have been introduced there. Information about this or other items can be found on our website www.storringtonconservation.org.uk, or contact Mick Denness on (01903) 745971. New members of all ages are always welcome. One volunteer is worth ten who are pressed. Just turn up at a working party, or get in touch with Mick for details of other events. Stuart Kersley

anal boat trips are a key part of funding the restoration of the Wey & Arun Canal and more volunteer boat crews are needed to help meet the growing demand for cruises. “The number of boat trips we ran grew by 33% in 2013 and we’re struggling to find enough crews to run the cruises,” says Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s Boat Operations Manager, Rosie Sugar. “We need people to fill a variety of roles – you could even become a skipper and we can help you get a Boat Masters Licence to achieve this but we are especially in need of crew and you will receive full training (free).” The Canal Trust operates three boats, including a 50-seater electric boat, for weekend boat trips and private charters between April and October from the Loxwood Canal Centre. According to Rosie Sugar, the only requirement is for volunteers to be over 16 years old and be moderately fit in order to operate the locks and work the boats. “There are also cabin crew vacancies which involve serving refreshments and selling merchandise on the cruises and for these positions you just need enthusiasm and a friendly disposition,” she explains. affodils, chicks, piglets and lambs are everywhere. At the time of writing we have nine lambs from five ewes and I don’t want to go to work but sit and watch them play. Sadly that isn’t an option but I can position my work computer so I can see them from afar on the days I work from home! Yet again Tedfold is exporting pigs to France, this time it’s two young Middle Whites and one British Saddleback travelling across the channel. The Noah our new 100% exporting process means timed government vet inspections and an early start on the day of travel. So far, so good, with Clapton the junior saddleback boar who was on his final, final warning and he has sulkily stayed in his pen since threatened with the butcher’s services. I am pleased really as he is a cracking boar. We also treated ourselves to another new Saddleback boar, Silas, as we are keeping the progeny from our current senior boar, Farrell, we will have to sell him. He is only two and such a
good boy it will be sad when he eventually goes. Noah our new boer goat buck has settled in well and after isolation has now been introduced to his ladies. I am hoping I have timed it right and the ladies will not come into season until the autumn as, although they are old enough to conceive safely, I would prefer that they were a bit older. I am not looking forward to when he starts urinating all over himself to attract the ladies’ attention – a Boer Buck bizarre ritual but then I’m not a goat (steady). One disaster: last year we purchased a young brahma cockerel whose colour would really intensify the lemon colour we are aiming for in our chickens but just before they start mating I found him dead without warning. All the others appear well but having fed him for eight months I haven’t even got one chick from him. So annoying! Michaela Giles www.tedfoldcottagefarm.co.uk

Equine
Equines in crisis
T
he crisis in equine welfare probably will not have passed many horse owners by. In the UK we are in a very sad situation at this present time with horses and ponies being abandoned and left to fend for themselves on patches of wasteland, council owned playing fields and even cases of gates and fences to private grazing land being cut to allow access for horses and ponies being put out to ‘fly graze’ without the land owner’s permission. Since the recession the trade in equines has hit an all time low, there have even been cases of animals, especially colts, being left tied to railings at horse sales and auctions to be taken by anyone who wants them. Charities have on average taken in 50% more horses over the last year than ever before. If you find an animal dumped on your land call the police and the RSPCA who will serve an Abandonment Notice and hopefully trace the owner. Owning a horse or pony is a massive commitment both in money and time; the price of feed and hay has steadily crept up over the years and on top of other expenses such as worming, farrier’s bills, vet fees and livery it’s easy to see how the cost can mount up. The majority of horse owners have of course budgeted and planned for every eventuality such as unexpected vet’s fees, but others have not and the poor horse ends up with its basic needs not being met. Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 an owner has a duty of care to provide adequate food, fresh water, shelter and access to proper veterinary care as well as being able to freely express natural behaviours. An owner found not meeting these basic needs will be issued with an Improvement Notice. If no improvement is made then the owner will be liable to be prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act. Indiscriminate breeding has had a terrible effect upon horse and pony welfare with thousands of foals being born each year into an uncertain future. It costs many thousands of pounds to breed a quality foal and raise it to an age when it can be ridden. As a result, horse breeding is not something that will make an average owner rich! All over the UK there are people who are out to make a fast buck by breeding with poor quality stock

and taking often unweaned foals to market to hope to snare an ‘Ahh factor’ buyer. Please do not support these breeders; you are not ‘rescuing’ a foal, merely putting money in these people’s pockets making it worth their while to breed even more. Just as you would do with a puppy, do your research and buy from a good stud producing quality animals. Think long and hard if you want to put your much loved mare in foal – do you have the resources to keep the foal, and will it be quality enough to go on and do a useful job? Be very critical of your mare – is she really good enough to breed from? It’s a very difficult subject and it still seems a bit taboo to talk about but there are worse fates than putting a horse to sleep. It is very sad to see old and infirm equines being pushed through one sale after another and going from dealer to dealer when it would have been much kinder to euthanize the animal. If a horse can no longer be ridden or is elderly and an owner can no longer look after it then euthanasia is actually a kind and responsible option. Horse welfare charities such as World Horse Welfare and Redwings will be happy to talk to owners and reassure them when they are facing this decision; with charities at bursting point this can be a sensible option indeed. If you are worried about the welfare of any horse or pony, give one of the equine charities a call as well as the RSPCA. Equine charities are excellent as they have lots of first-hand knowledge and excellent field officers who can help and advise and owner who may be struggling; they will also liaise with the RSPCA and the police should the need arise to commence a prosecution. NEVER under any circumstances try to remove a horse yourself. Let’s hope the crisis starts to ease soon. Go and give your well loved horses an extra cuddle and a carrot. Until next month – thanks for reading. Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Living with Laika – ‘Bag it and bin it!’
N
ow here are a few helpful tips for all new owners and goodness me, there does seem to be an increasing number of dogs in our district. You see, I’ve become quite an expert in the fine art of poop picking. Yep, there isn’t much I don’t know about the skills required to make that swoop towards the pile that your precious pooch has kindly left behind. Let me tell you that essential to making a successful ‘grab’ is a high quality bag – not one of these flimsy black or even see-through articles that wouldn’t be out of place holding a cheap sandwich. You know the type of bags whose thickness is a veneer and can be measured in micro-millimetres and when you want to extract one from the pack, you invariably take ten! You need a bag made with high grade plastic that is deep and strong enough to cope with that first morning ‘drop’! Woe betide the person who skimps on cost! Oh yes – depending on the size of your hand, the gathering process may require several attempts to remove the offending ordure. This clearly can be extremely embarrassing and difficult as you try to capture the entire stack in one go. Ideally, you need
to wear an ice-hockey goalie’s catch-glove before slipping your bag on to ensure a clean sweep – been watching too much of the Winter Olympics I’m afraid! There is nothing more testing than picking those tiny morsels when already clutching a bag full! Of course, I suppose owners of smaller dogs must be pleased with their choice! Having made the snatch, you have a choice of how you carry away your trophy. It seems to me that most dog operatives elect to display their findings as they continue with their walk – I personally take this position and hope that I will find a suitable dog waste bin nearby. Laika in fact, appears aware of my need and thoughtfully elects to defecate near to a council receptacle which is situated on our regular route. Of course, a longer leash-walk will necessitate more comfort stops in which case I may make a circular trip or else resort to the handy little ‘Guide to the Poop Bins of Horsham District Council’ that I have complied. There are some very dinky solutions for poop pick up however and I particularly like the product with a sealed compartment, a built-in freshener and handy bag dispenser; alternatively, there is always a pocket! Testing Times What exactly are SATs and how can you help your child through them?
A
s May approaches, many will feel the increased tension in English primary schools: SATs are on the horizon. Officially called National Curriculum assessments, the purpose of the tests is to monitor pupils’ progress, inform their next school of their level of attainment, and provide information on how schools are performing. When they were originally introduced, testing took place at the end of Key Stages 1, 2 and 3: in Years 2, 6 and 9 respectively. Tests in Year 9 were scrapped in 2008 (however, the Chief Inspector of Schools has recently stated that he would like them to be reintroduced). In Year 2 (age 6/7), children are assessed in reading, writing, speaking and listening, maths and science. The tasks and tests are carried out when the school chooses. All the work is marked by the teacher and the children may not even notice anything out of the ordinary. Children are given ‘Levels’ in each area but the results are not published. In Year 6 (age 10/11), the tests cover English reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling, and maths (including mental arithmetic). These tests are more 1 formal and are taken in mid-May. They last under 5 /2 hours in total and children will receive their results in
July. The school’s overall results form part of the information used to collate the school league tables published by the Department for Education. So how can you help your child to prepare? Some schools may give children extra homework, practice tests or offer coaching. If your child is worried about a particular task, talk to their teacher as they should be able to offer reassurance and support. Read regularly with and to your child. As you do, talk about what you are reading and make sure they understand the meaning behind the words. Ask, for example, “Why did he do that?” “How is she feeling now?” Try some mental maths problems in spare moments. Ask quick-fire multiplication questions, or challenge them to work out how much change you will receive when out shopping. Time is a concept that children often find tricky. Can they work out how long you will have to wait for the bus, or when a 45-minute TV programme will finish? The most important thing is to try and minimise any stress children are feeling and encourage them to just do the best they can. The aim of the SATs is simply to see how much they have learned and, if they panic, they are more likely to make mistakes. Alex Albrighton

t was announced at the National Farm Attractions Network awards, held in Harrogate in February, that Fishers Adventure Farm Park in Wisborough Green had received not one, but TWO prestigious awards! The Fishers team were overjoyed at the awards ceremony last week when it was announced that they were the winners for ‘The Best Food & Beverage 2014’ at any farm park in the whole of the UK. This was shortly followed by another Tom and Kate Rollings – thrilling revelation that they had bagged the runners-up awardBest for Farm ‘TheAttraction Best Farm Attraction UK 2014’. Pat McEvoy, Catering Manager at Fishers commented, “We are delighted and proud to have received this award. It is a great recognition of all the hard work and dedication from every member of our catering team. We are committed to using fresh produce as much as possible from local businesses and suppliers and will hopefully continue to do so”. His wife asked if Fishers Farm would take on her care after he passed away, and Tracey has enthralled children and adult visitors for nearly 20 years. Her favourite things were being stroked under her chin, digging in the grass in the summer and eating strawberries! ‘Tracey’ may seem an odd name for an old tortoise born in the 1920’s, but Charles Dickens used the name for a character in his novel The Pickwick Papers in 1837! Very sadly, the Fishers team had to make the decision for Tracey to be put to sleep by a specialist veterinary surgery near Horsham last month, after a tumour was found to be inoperable. The team shed many tears for her; she was a special animal who shares a honoured place in the history of Fishers Farm Park and she will always be remembered with love. Don’t be an April fool with your emails… Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services
P
hishing and email scams are becoming more and more common and are relatively well publicised. But it is amazing how easy it is to be fooled and how many people still fall for these awful scams. So we thought, in the spirit of April Fool, we would put together some tips so that you don’t become one – ever. Slow Down. Spammers want you to act first and think later. If the message conveys a sense of urgency, or uses high-pressure sales tactics be sceptical; never let their urgency influence your careful review. Delete any request for financial information or passwords. If you get asked to reply to a message by providing your bank account, bank routing information, credit card numbers or passwords, it’s a scam. ALWAYS. NO EXCEPTIONS. EVER. Reject requests for help or offers of help. Legitimate companies and organisations do not contact you to provide help. If you did not specifically request assistance from the sender, consider any offer to ‘help’ restore credit scores, refinance a home, etc, a scam. Similarly, if you receive a request for help from a charity or organisation that you do not have a relationship with, delete it. Don’t let a link be in control of where you land. Stay in control by finding the website yourself using
a search engine. Hovering over links in email will show the actual URL at the bottom, but a good fake can still send you to the spammer’s site. And if you don’t know what the email is about, clicking links is a poor choice. Beware of dangerous downloads. If you don’t know the sender personally AND expect a file from them, never download a file (especially a .ZIP file) in an email. You have no idea what could be unleashed on your machine so just don’t do it. THE GOLDEN RULE – DON’T CLICK ON ANYTHING. It’s this simple: if you don’t know the person who has sent you the email don’t click on ANYTHING. If the email is from someone you know then read it very carefully. If it sets your Spider Sense tingling in any way – call your contact and check to see if they have sent you the email. Or just don’t click on ANYTHING and delete it. If it’s important they will send it again or email you to see if you received it. A large proportion of the issues we come across are related to computer security and viruses – it’s all too easy to fall prey to scammers who are just basically after something from you – whether money, your email account or control of your computer. So don’t be a fool and think before you click. Bax Computer Services (www.baxcomputers.co.uk)

Billingshurst Fire Fighters enjoying signs of spring
I
s the bad weather behind us now? Bilingshurst Fire fighters certainly think so as they completed the first Charity Car Wash of 2014. People came in large numbers on 22nd March to support an excellent Charity while watching their local fire fighters bring a shine back into their cars. As always everyone at Billingshurst Fire Station can’t thank the local community enough for the support they give. It really is greatly appreciated from all involved. As the weather looks like its turning (for the best), the roads can still be lethal during the early mornings and late nights. Although the days can feel almost summer-like, scraping the ice off the windscreen in the morning is a clue to be very careful on the road. As in winter, bear in mind that early morning ice can linger where the sun doesn’t shine – by which I mean in the shadows of buildings and trees! If we have a sudden cold snap, although the roads look dry, black ice can catch you out before you have
enough time to react, so please be careful! The next phase of common fire calls during the spring and summer are barn fires. A fire on the farm is a farmer’s worst nightmare and often, it brings significant emotional and economic damage to a farming community. These fires take up a huge amount of resources from the fire service due to the size of the incident and the fact that barns are often some distance from the road making access difficult. Often a barn fire goes unnoticed until it is well established which is why our advice is to keep any machinery away from flammable materials and extend your general household maintenance to your barns to keep them tidy inside and out. Straw in particular is highly inflammable. As you can see from the photo, by the time we arrive it is often too late to save the barn, many of which are wood. Therefore, as always, we much prefer to help with preventative advice. Dan Game
