ugust marks the centenary of the start of the First World War, sometimes known as the Great War. With so many millions killed you may wonder what was so ‘great’ about it but language changes – the meaning was that it was a ‘huge’ or ‘vast’ war. Page 6 outlines centenary events in Horsham on the 3rd and 4th while, on the 4th, Billingshurst hosts a candle-lit hour of reflection at the War Memorial (see page 8). Please try and attend as a mark of respect for those whose names the memorial – and thousands like it – bears. No-cook orange cheesecake
Easy and light for a warm summer eve
METHOD
1. Place the biscuits inside a plastic food bag and crush with a wooden spoon or rolling pin. 2. Melt the butter. Put biscuits into a bowl and mix in melted butter. Put mixture into a 23cm cheesecake tin and use back of a spoon to spread evenly, press down firmly to form base. Put tin into fridge to set. This takes about 30 mins. 3. Put the curd or cream cheese, orange zest, mascarpone, sugar and milk into a bowl and mix it well with the wooden spoon. 4. Put the cream in a clean bowl and whisk until it is the consistency of thick custard. Add to the orange mixture and mix thoroughly. 5. Remove the cheesecake tin from the fridge. Pour the filling over the biscuit base and spread evenly. Decorate with fruit (raspberries are delicious but any soft summer fruit will do) then return to the fridge until ready to serve (at least 4 hours or overnight).
Billingshurst Street Pastors get boost from Police Commissioner Billingshurst Street Pastors have received a grant of £1,000 from the Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner’s Safer in Sussex Community Fund. Patrick Perks BEM, Treasurer of Billingshurst Street Pastors, joined the Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, and representatives from other local organisations who had also been awarded funding at a special ‘Celebration Showcase’ event held in Lewes on 19th June. Commenting on the award Don Newport, Chairman of Billingshurst Street Pastors, said, “We are delighted to have been awarded this grant from the Police & Crime Commissioner’s Community Fund, which will support our ongoing work. The presence of our volunteers in the village has become a welcome and familiar sight. The teams patrol both at lunchtimes and evenings, providing help to anyone who needs it. This boost to our funds will assist with training new Street Pastors.” Commending Billingshurst Street Pastors, Mrs Bourne said, “This is a great example of an innovative local project that aims to make our communities safer. The Safer in Sussex Community Fund was launched to help communities tackle crime and disorder.” Photo: Patrick Perks BEM from Billingshurst Street Pastors receiving cheque from Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne

WW1 Centenary / Food and drink
Horsham District Council joins forces with Royal British Legion to mark World War One Centenary
H
orsham District will commemorate the Centenary of the start of World War One with a series of remembrance events on 3rd and 4th August. Just as the war itself drew the community together, the 3rd and 4th August will reflect that spirit through a series of events for the community to remember the sacrifice and service of all those who served in the Great War, from land army and munitions girls, to those who paid the ultimate price. On Sunday 3rd August at 6.30pm at St Mary’s Parish Church, The Causeway, Horsham there will be a multidenominational Evensong remembering the outbreak of the Great War. On Monday 4th August, reflecting the unadorned life 100 years ago, Horsham Museum will be staging a sober exhibition and associated activities. The Chairman of Horsham District Council, Cllr Brian O’Connell, will open the day-long exhibition held in Horsham Park Barn by the side of Horsham Park. There, he will sign a book of reflection and remembrance, the first of many visitors, as the book will allow those who want to comment space to do so, as they reflect upon or remember their ancestors’ service.
The book itself will become a permanent reminder of the centenary. After signing the book the Chairman will then light a candle and place it at Horsham Park’s poppy field. In the afternoon, The Capitol, North Street, Horsham will be showing a film based on the events of the Great War. The day will end with a concert organised by the Royal British Legion held in the Drill Hall, Denne Road, Horsham – a building designed by and paid for by the officers for the men of the 4th Battalion. The Royal British Legion, born out of World War One, is a unique institution – in the rest of the world the state stepped in to look after the war wounded after their recovery, but in Britain they relied on charity and so the Royal British Legion was formed. The concert will include, amongst other works, Elgar’s Nimrod and music from World War One. Aimed at as wide an audience as possible, the tickets will only be £8 with concessions. A Good Read August’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Northanger Abbey – Val McDermid That’s not a typo in the title. This really is a version of Jane Austen’s classic novel, reworked by crime writer Val McDermid as part of The Austen Project, which aims to issue updated versions of all six Austen novels. I approached this with some trepidation, being a huge fan of both authors, but never having considered them in the same sentence before. From the first page I was hooked. This is a marvelous mix of the familiar and the new. Austen’s heroine, Catherine Morland, is brought fully into the twenty-first century (now she prefers to be known as Cat), has a serious social media habit, and is enjoying the delights of the Edinburgh Festival. The original Catherine’s obsession with Gothic fiction, is translated into modern day Cat’s voracious consumption of vampire literature – meaning that she is prone to see the supernatural lurking around every shadowy corner, particularly when she finds herself with her new friends the Tilneys at Northanger Abbey. McDermid’s prose sparkles, with cleverly observed dialogue and constant refreshing twists on Austen’s plot and characters. Boorish John Thorpe and his shallow sister Bella, seem to belong perfectly in the modern day – indeed, readers may feel that they have met them on a number of occasions. Even though I knew what
was going to happen, I still wanted to stay up late and finish the book – just like Cat/Catherine with their gothic romances, and just like I did the first time I read Austen’s Northanger Abbey. I can’t think of a higher compliment. The Invisible Man’s Socks – Alex Shearer They should have known better… but it had been an educational school trip, and they had some free time, and there was really nothing else to do… So, Mr Ellis’s class (and Mr Ellis, and Miss Bingham, and Mrs Ormerod) find themselves in The Museum of Little Horrors where, despite the warnings issued by the owner, they can’t resist touching the exhibits. You would too, if you were faced with the Bigfoot’s Big Foot. Or the Cyclops’ Cycle Clips. And especially the Tuft of the Werewolf’s Hair. However, when Michael Pensley realises that he can actually feel the Invisible Man’s Socks, it stops being so funny. And when the class return to school, and then go home, they begin to realise that perhaps those warnings were there for a reason. Alex Shearer treads the line carefully between the ghoulish and the absurd in this novel for eight-year-olds and over, and there are plenty of laughs to keep the pages turning as the horrible consequences develop, just realistically enough to make you wonder – and perhaps to stop you touching when the signs tell you not to.

Weald School secures £10 million building investment
I
n order to meet the growing population in our area through local housing developments the Weald School has been asked to expand its current intake over the next five years. West Sussex County Council will invest £10 million pounds in a building project which will significantly enhance some of their current buildings and facilities whilst at the same time providing new infrastructure and teaching space. The school, which was judged outstanding in all categories by Ofsted in October 2013, has been consistently oversubscribed in the main school until 2012 when the Local Authority enhanced the intake to nine forms of entry to meet growing need. The school also has a growing sixth form. This growth, despite a programme of internal alterations over the last two years to maximise the use of the current buildings, means certain critical facilities are reaching capacity. Designs have been finalised over the last 12 months and planning permission will be applied for during August with a proposed start date in January 2015. Consultation for the planning application took place at the school on Thursday 17th July to hear the views of students, staff, parents and local residents. All views expressed will be incorporated in the application and plans are already well under
way to minimise disruption during the project whether on site for students and staff or amongst the local community. It is expected that the build will last about 18 months and upon completion will provide: • A modern catering facility and visually stunning dining area. • New high tech classrooms for a range of subjects including English, Modern Foreign Languages, Art and Photography, Social Sciences, PE, Food and Textiles Technology. • Extra Science, Drama and Music provision. • New ICT infrastructure • New PE changing facilities • Enhanced sixth form space and additional provision for private study. There is no doubt that the final result will make the school one of the most modern in the area and enable staff to further improve the outstanding educational experience already offered to students. As the school nears its sixtieth anniversary the opportunities that the building project affords will only enhance its pursuit of excellence to the undoubted benefit of Weald students and the wider community. Adam Whitehead, Deputy Headteacher

A
capacity crowd of over 3,000 enjoyed the Billingshurst Show at the Recreation Ground, Billingshurst on 29th June, and the beautiful weather ensured that the theme for the Carnival Procession – Brazil – seemed entirely appropriate, featuring a riot of colour on the floats, with jungle animals, birds and footballers prominently on display. The procession was led as always by the Petworth Band, with Carnival Princess Holly Haynes following behind in an Audi kindly loaned Billingshurst Brownies by Harwoods. Holly was accompanied by attendants Bailey Snowdon and Alysha Palmer, together with flower girls Isla Greenfield, Elizabeth Herbert and Jenny Hunt. Local singing star Lucie Francis (who needs no introduction to Village Tweet readers), Grand Finalist at this year’s TeenStar, opened the show and awarded first prize for the Carnival Procession to St Gabriels Playgroup, with WAKOOS second and Dauxwood Cubs third, before Lucie Francis treating the crowd to a set of her songs. The crowds were entertained during the afternoon with a full programme of arena events including baton twirling by Horsham Bluebelles, pom-pom dancing by Southern Starlights and gymnastics and dance by the Weald School. Olivants Equine Displays from Midhurst put on two excellent displays of classical Spanish horsemanship, with two beautiful Andalusian stallions including the aptly named Magnifico. In stark contrast there was a serious outbreak of r St Gabriel’s tame tige medieval violence courtesy of the Knights of Loxwood, practising a little mayhem in advance of the Loxwood Joust on 2nd/3rd August.
Elsewhere there was music and dancing from Five Foot Two, West Hill Morris Men and St Cements Clogs, another very successful Dog Show and stalls and attractions for all the family. Organising Committee Chairman Paul Starkey said, “We try to make sure that the Billingshurst Show remains a traditional, family-friendly village show. We were delighted this year to welcome both West Sussex Smallholders and West Sussex Beekeepers Association to the show for the first time, and we hope that Magnifico! they will both become regular visitors. It was lovely to see the large crowds enjoying the fine weather, and it’s particularly good to see so many stalls from the local community.” Paul Starkey commented, “Many people contribute to making the Billingshurst Show a success, and I’d like also to thank everyone on the Organising Committee, which is made up of Rotary Club members and supporters of Billingshurst Scouts & Guides, our many helpers beforehand and on the day, and our sponsors and Knights of Loxwood advertisers, especially our Principal Sponsors Austens, Coco’s, Essence of Asia and Gozone, who have all been extremely generous with their support. “The aims of the Show are to provide a great day out for the local community and to raise money for local charities. This year we are hoping to raise up to £10,000 which represents a great effort from all concerned.” “Finally I’d like to wish Lucie good luck in the Grand Final of TeenStar on 19th July at the NEC in Birmingham and to 1st prize for little Brod y thank her for taking the time to open our show.” Carnival Princess Holly Haynes with her Paul Starkey attendants Bailey Snowdon (left) and Alysha Palmer (right). Characters? John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
O
nce you get to know any group of people, wherever they live and whatever they do, you soon see that among them there are individuals who are best described as ‘characters’. They stand out from the others as they offer something that makes them unforgettable and often they linger in the memory for the rest of your life. Sometimes it’s their sense of humour that lifts the mood no matter what the occasion, or maybe their ability to assert their presences in the largest of crowds. Some animals also have this ability and it’s of them that I now refer. Many years ago, just as petrol came to be rationed following the Suez crisis, selling at under two shillings a gallon (that’s 10p in the new money… but two hours work, so it’s all relative I guess), I started work on a lovely dairy farm down in Kent. The owner was a man who had managed to fulfil his dream and buy the farm by working all God’s hours as a stevedore on the docks. A real tough fellow who broached no nonsense from anyone, other than, it should be said, his dainty wife Nellie. His choice of animals echoed his determination to do things ‘his way’. The milking herd, all of whom we hand-milked, was roughly divided between two breeds of cattle. On the left of the milking shed were the Kerrys, an Irish breed believed to be the oldest in Europe. They are a medium-sized cow, coal black, and in those days sporting two magnificent upward curling horns. On the right – appropriately – were the Dexters. These also originated from southern Ireland, but by the mid-1800’s had all but disappeared from their native country. They are the smallest of all the dairy cows. About half the size of a modern cow, and although they do come in lighter shades, these again, like the Kerry, were coal black. They are, though, naturally polled and carry no horns at all. To round off this collection the farmer decided that the bull he would use to father the farm’s future stock would be an Aberdeen Angus, a broad shouldered beef breed from Scotland known for its delicious meat, and unlike most dairy bulls, its normally placid nature. Once again a hornless black animal but with a head made of cast iron to make up for the horn deficiency. Boss of the herd was Primrose, one of the pintsized Dexters. Almost as round as she was tall, she would waddle down the centre of the shed,
26
the teats of her udder barely clearing the concrete pathway, as she eyed up the other animals while snorting her displeasure at any who should bar her path. These would be persuaded to move rapidly out of her way by a very heavy butt from the crown of bone that replaced the position that horns should have adorned. In his pen at the head of the shed lurked the bull. Scottie. As gentle as a lamb when he was being walked for his daily exercise, but once in his pen and his girls gathered before him in the shed, he would show off to the assembly by becoming as cussed and as obstinate as his master, possessing a very short fuse that was lit by the smallest of incidents. When roused he would give out the most gloriously snotty snort, charge across his pen, and crash his iron-hard poll into the breezeblock wall. The wall would shudder under the assault and if the event warranted further action he would repeat the attack with unflagging energy. He never seemed to suffer any ill effects from this hammering, and poking his huge head over the top of the wall, he would then stand quite still, eyes half closed, with the most contented look on his face as his head was scratched vigorously with a hard dandy brush. We all suspected that the few brain cells that lurked inside that huge frame had long ago been anaesthetized by the continual pounding. Hand-milking these lovely cows required a whole new learning skill. The Kerrys would stand like regal statues. Tall and elegant, their gorgeous horned heads held erect, they exuded dignity and grace. The Dexters by comparison were a nightmare. No ordinary milking bucket would ever fit beneath them. They would stand there, their great stomachs gurgling in your ear, as you tried to tuck the much smaller pail at an ever more dangerous angle to prevent the gently foaming liquid from escaping down the dung passage. It always required two or three emptyings to avoid spillage… in fact later on when milking machines became the norm, they had to make a special type just for the Dexter breed as ordinary ones just would not fit underneath them. We always thought that the ideal milking tool for them would be a frying pan. All the same, we adored them. What the farmer was thinking of when he set about creating this mix I shall never know. It could only have been heart over mind. Totally impractical, delightfully daft, and most definitely one of a kind. But, oh boy, a complete joy. And a character. John Nash

Fabulous flowers and tropical foliage can bring an incredibly lush feel to a garden, but don’t overlook the natural beauty of our native plants just because they’re right outside your door. The most obvious British wonders are the beautiful old oak trees, flowering cherries and mixed hedgerows, even the invasive cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) looks great en-masse in spring, but when it comes to plants deemed ‘garden worthy’, consider the traditional (and modern) use of tightly clipped yew, holly and box which has been favoured for generations. Beech (Fagus) is another popular hedging variety, often selected for its beautiful autumn and winter colour and again, it’s one of our natives! Many of the plants native to the UK flower in spring, such as the sweetly but delicately scented primroses. Then there are the triking red poppies which adorn the fields mid-way through the year. Wild, hardy geraniums grow in the most unlikely places and are very happy naturalised in grasses, proudly showing off their ‘Chelsea purple’ flowers. The stunning blooms of Pulsatilla vulgaris (pasque flower) are perfectly displayed over foamy foliage and are low growing and very well behaved (perfect for the modern gardener).

Their hairy seed heads also look fun long after the flowers have faded. May and June is showtime for the foxgloves whose tall slender stems carry beautiful purple and white spires of flowers which will seed prolifically and brighten a dull corner. Take care if you have small children though as foxgloves are poisonous if ingested. The Asian moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are popular houseplants, but our wild orchid is a plant to treasure. Often found in woodland settings, the purple flowers lurk around on the cool and shady forest floor. For a similar native, more easily available to buy and worth planting this month, look for Colchicums or naked ladies… so called as they produce their flowers well before the leaves appear. The bulbs are quite expensive individually, but quickly bulk up if happy, and will very soon provide you with a flower that will become an interesting talking point. Commonly known as the autumn crocus, it does seem strange to see it in flower in September, but it has to be one of my favourite native bulbs. Using native plants can also mean a higher rate of success, even in our variable climate, so if your fingers are not so green, it’s harder to kill these plants – they’re born survivors! Happy summer gardening! Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net Photo: Not often you find a picture of naked ladies in Village Tweet! Colchicums or autumn crocus as they are also known

Compost is the ultimate in recycling with Austen’s Home Hardware, Billingshurst
W
hat to do with garden waste can be a year-round dilemma, but during the summer months, when lawns seem to demand constant mowing and weeds are at their most pernicious, the problem is compounded. But it’s a problem that can just as easily be composted and that’s where Austen’s Home Hardware, Billingshurst can help. Of course, you can always make regular trips to your local tip, unless your local council operates a kerb-side collection scheme but, for a lot less effort and very little expense you could be turning your cuttings, clippings and other organic household waste into nutrient-rich homemade compost. Making compost is easy – and cheap. Invest in a readymade composter, designed so you can access the lower layers of fresh compost. You may be amazed by the diversity of material that can be composted. Lawn cuttings, dead leaves, soft hedge clippings, annual weeds, old bedding plants, uncooked vegetable peelings and trimmings, tea bags, coffee grounds and old newspaper are ideal, as too are cotton and wool fabrics and brown cardboard, although these should all be cut into small pieces before being added to the heap. However, avoid food scraps, meat and bones, weeds with seed heads, diseased plant material and perennial roots. These will not easily break down and could easily contaminate the compost, inhibit the organic process and harm the natural bacteria. Avoid anything that may attract vermin.
To help the process along, we at Austen’s Home Hardware recommend using a compost-making additive. One of the best on the market is Garotta. Made from natural materials including nitrogen and ground limestone, Garotta helps to maintain a neutral pH and speed up the process of decomposition. Garotta’s ingredients also include microbes and enzymes that promote bacterial growth to raises the temperature in the compost heap, accelerating the breakdown of material to create a rich and crumbly compost, ideal as a mulch or soil improver. Because Garotta is harmless to children and pets there is no need for your compost heap to be enclosed or ‘off-limits’. However, it is important to build up your heap in layers and sprinkle additive to each layer. This way an even and consistent decomposition will be achieved. The top layer of the heap should always be covered with polyethylene or an old piece of carpet to contain the heat. Heat radiating from a compost heap is a sure sign that it’s working. In just six to eight weeks you should have compost ready for use. A similar procedure – but without using Garotta – may take up to three months. What could be simpler? Call into Austen’s Home Hardware for helpful, friendly advice on composting and see our comprehensive range of seasonal garden products. Composting really is the ultimate in recycling and everyone can do it. Even small gardens generate a surprising amount of organic waste each year that can be put to good use. David Lobley

The heat is on
F
inally summer has arrived in the UK! Let’s hope it continues. Summer is a fantastic time for horse owners with long, light evenings for hacking, competitions galore and perhaps the fun of a beach ride for cooling off both horse and human after a long hot day. But summer brings its own set of problems that horse owners need to be vigilant for to keep your equine companion cool and comfortable while the heat is on. Watching the waistline, with the flush of spring grass carrying on into summer with the near perfect growing conditions we are experiencing, we must be extra careful that our horses and ponies do not put on too much extra weight which can lead to the devastating condition of laminitis, not to mention the extra strain on the heart, lungs and joints. Consider the use of a grazing muzzle to control grass intake. Temporary electric fencing is easy to set up and maintain allowing fields to be divided and strip grazed. Sunburn can be a real problem for some horses and ponies, especially those with pink skin. Protect pink skin on muzzles by using an equine sun cream. The use of a UV-resistant fly mask fitted with a full nose can also protect skin from damaging UV rays. Some horses will also benefit from a light summer sheet, especially cremellos whose pink skin is prone to damage from the sun and black horses and ponies who can get bleached by the sun’s rays and end up all shades of ginger! Natural shelter in the form of trees is welcomed by horses who will doze under them in the heat of the day, as are field shelters. If you have neither, consider bring your horse in to an airy, well ventilated stable on the hottest days. Dehydration is actually rare in the domestic horse, but it is vitally important that your horse or pony has enough water on hot sunny days. Water must be checked at least twice a day and refilled as necessary, even mains-fed troughs need checking. Put extra drinking buckets out if needed; if the horses are emptying all water between checks then they are not being given enough. Horses that are competing or in extra work may be sweating more than usual so consider giving an electrolyte supplement in
either the feed or drinking water. Flies are a nuisance in the summer months, not only are they annoying to horses and humans alike but they can spread disease. The use of fly rugs has become very popular in recent years; when buying make sure that the mesh is fine enough to prevent insects slipping through the holes to gain access to your horse. When using fly masks make sure they are a snug fit so flies cannot get stuck inside the mask making life miserable for the horse, it is also important to check the fit over the eyes as serious injuries can occur if the mask is rubbing the horse’s eyes. Masks and rugs should be checked and re-adjusted at least twice a day. Fly sprays and gels can be used to repel flies; always do a patch test when using a new product to make sure that the horse does not have an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients. You may need to try a few different fly sprays to find the one that works best for your horse. Hard ground can be a problem in summer with many tracks becoming as hard as concrete and quite often rutted too. This can lead to concussion injuries to the horse’s feet and legs. Consider hiring an all weather gallop track and have a fun evening with a few friends – or take a trip to the beach! Check with the local council as horse riding is often restricted to early mornings and late evenings during the summer months. For beach riding, tides can be checked on the local council’s website as well. Ask other riders and local stables for the best horsefriendly and safe beaches, some stables close to a beach may offer horsebox parking for a small fee too. Always check out the surface you are riding on before having a canter or gallop for any hidden rocks or sudden sinking patches of sand by walking your planned route first. That’s all for this month – let’s hope the weather continues to be kind to us, have a fabulous summer of riding! Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Loxwood village fête a success! Despite the thunder, lightning and torrential rain that fell in the early morning of the fête day, 7th June, Loxwood villagers enjoyed a tremendous day of fun and entertainment which created a most enjoyable family atmosphere. Once the storms had cleared, the sun shone which allowed everybody to make the most of all the side-shows, craft stalls, barbecue and other entertainment that had been arranged. This year the fête site had been reorganised to allow much more space in the North Hall grounds, which was filled with a fun dog show, classic cars, children’s races, Punch & Judy and a very lively, entertaining, performance by the Slinfold Concert Band as well as many other traditional fête stalls. Overall, this was another very successful event that has raised a considerable amount of money for the Loxwood and Alfold churches, North Hall and other deserving village organisations. More important than the fund raising was that this is an opportunity for people in the village to get together, meet old friends and acquaintances and generally have a good time. We would like to thank everybody who contributed to making the day a success, especially all the organisers who worked tirelessly to put this fête on, our helpers on the day, sponsors, advertisers, stallholders, cake makers and everybody who turned out on the day to support us. Billingshurst Fire Service: “Cook safe this summer”
O
utdoor activities are often a great way to spend your leisure time but they have their own set of unique fire risks that should not be underestimated. However, some common sense preparation can ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. It’s all too easy to be distracted when you have friends and family around you while cooking. To avoid injuries or damage to property, follow these simple precautions: • Make sure your barbecue is in good working order. • Ensure the barbecue is on a flat site, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs. • Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area. • Never leave the barbecue unattended. • Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting to move it. Every year, many people are injured from fire
while camping. Please ensure your safety comes first when using barbecues and also setting up a camp fire. Caravans are smaller and more confined than a house so the fire risks can be potentially more hazardous. It is essential that you install a smoke alarm to give early warning of a fire and ensure your caravan is equipped with a fire extinguisher and fire blanket. We provide Fire Safety in greater detail if you wish to find more at www.fireservice.co.uk. As always it was nice to meet members of the public, and answer questions, at the Billingshurst Show and Carnival at the end of June. Our new recruits Tim and Matt, introduced in last month’s Village Tweet, will be telling us how their training and recruitment process was in next month’s issue. Missing in Sussex By Terry Williams, Search Controller, North Sussex Search Team A slide and video presentation showing how Sussex Police use local civilians to search for vulnerable missing people 1. What happens when a highly vulnerable person is reported missing to Sussex Police? 2. Would you volunteer to help search for them? 3. Television coverage of recent searches for missing children (e.g. April Jones in Wales and Mikaeel Kular near Edinburgh) remind us of the strength of a community’s response, but how can civilians really help? Terry Williams is a Kirdford resident and is Search Controller and Search Trainer for North Sussex Search Team – a group of volunteers used by Sussex Police to search for high-risk missing persons. Sussex has over 400 search volunteers who are on onehour notice to attend searches. They are an essential asset to an increasingly stretched Police Force.

The New Stars
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
B
ecause Sally and Bill were leaving the little farm, Anne decided that she had to downsize on the pigs. The terrible mud in the pig pens over the wet winter had not helped. So very sadly she put an advert on the internet to sell Humphrey and Hettie. Nothing happened for a bit and everyone hoped that they would not be sold. But the day came when Anne told Nanny that someone was interested in the pigs, a lady named Robyn. She was from Fishers Farm! The day that Robyn came to visit them, Humphrey and Hettie were asleep in their ark. When the food kettle was rattled, Hettie came out slowly and came over. She sauntered over and let Robyn rub her back. Humphrey couldn’t be bothered to move. Bill rattled the food bucket – no response. He banged on the roof of the ark – no response. He called him sweet then nasty names – still no response. Then finally when Bill was ready to give up, Humphrey deigned to emerge to meet Robyn. To say it was love at first sight would be understatement. Humphrey was an absolute gentleman. He sashayed over to Robyn, yawned and allowed her to pat him and rub his back. Although he was still covered in mud, Robyn leaned against him and he listened intently as she told him how lovely he was, despite the mud. After several questions of Sally and Nanny, Robyn agreed that the two pigs would move to Fishers Farm. A week or so later, a lovely new silver and red stock trailer arrived at the little farm. It was backed up to the open gate in the pig pen and the tailgate lowered ready for the pigs. Straw and food were placed inside to encourage the pigs. They just ignored it. Mind you the trailer was little. It was barely big enough for Hettie let alone Humphrey as well. After several days of it just sitting there and being ignored, it was decided that the little farm’s
40
rough, shabby but big trailer would take the Humphrey and Hettie to their new home but first Grandad had to pump up the tyres as it hadn’t been used for a while. Then the little red trailer was removed, and replaced with the shabby trailer and, the very same day, Nanny was weeding her garden when she saw Humphrey, then Hettie, amble up the ramp into ‘their’ trailer and settle down to sleep. Sally came over right away and checked all was well and shut the gate. Robyn was advised that next morning the pigs would be delivered at 9 o’clock. Grandad and Bill backed up to the old trailer. Bill had to jump on the front to attach it to the recalcitrant tow ball. This time Grandad found the paddock was dry enough so the Range Rover got neither stuck nor muddy and off they went to Fisher’s. When they got back to the farm, Grandad reported that the pigs had been given a lovely new ark and a great big paddock. Humphrey had immediately ambled down the ramp (as was his wont) followed closely by Hettie. They looked around and then strode purposefully to their new ark and made it their own. With some sadness, Grandad and Bill said goodbye to them before they came home. Later that afternoon, Dottie’s gate was left open hoping she would move out of her pen and walk across the paddock to the ark where Humphrey had been. She had stubbornly refused to move the last time anyone wanted to move her. To Sally’s surprise Dottie parked herself in Humphrey’s old ark as if she had always belonged there. It just goes to show that pigs may come and pigs may go but life goes on at the little farm in Billingshurst. Goodbye Humphrey and Hettie – enjoy your new home. Yvonne Fleece Photo: Grahame Pearson

What to consider when buying a new PC Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services
L
ast month we looked at the differences between Macs and PCs, citing Macs as an alternative when buying a new computer. However, if you are PC at heart, or just don’t think a Mac is for you, then here are some things to consider when buying a new PC. Budget. Of course, how much you have to spend is usually the first consideration for most people. But budget isn’t always the ‘be all and end all’. You really should think about your requirements too – if you spend just £350 on a PC and it doesn't do what you want then you will have wasted that money. Requirements. You really need to have a good think about what you want your PC for. Is it just to create and print letters? Send emails and browse the Internet? Store photos and print them out? Play games? Create a checklist of what you want to do with your new computer and make sure you buy something that matches your needs. Processor. The computer processor is and will always be one of the most important considerations when purchasing a computer. The better your processor, the more stable and faster-running your PC will be. Memory. Memory is another one of the more important purchasing decisions on a computer. The more memory in the computer, the more applications it will be able to handle and the faster it will run. Hard drive. Again another important factor. The hard drive is storage for all your files and information. If you have lots of photos, movies and other files, make sure you get a hard drive with plenty of available space and runs at speeds that don’t slow the overall computer down.
Case or ‘Box’. The box is often overlooked when buying a new computer. Think about whether you want a desktop or tower style box? Will it fit on top of or below your desk? Will the drives be accessible when you have the computer in place? Does it support the standards of motherboards? (This is important if you want to upgrade the computer in the future.) CD/DVD media burning. Most newer computers today have an included disc burner in the computer. If you want to make your own CDs or DVDs make sure the computer supports it. Video card. For computer gaming the video card has become one of the most important factors behind memory and processor. If you plan on gaming with your computer make sure your video card GPU and video memory meet the requirements. Add-ons. All computer manufacturers give you the option to buy additional accessories when buying a new computer. But if you’re upgrading from an older computer many of your older peripherals and accessories may be compatible with the new computer. Software. Most users want at the very least some type of Office suite. If it is included make sure you get the full version and not a demo, trial or shareware. Returns. You need to check, wherever you purchase your new computer, whether it can be returned if unsatisfactory or faulty or does it have to be sent to the computer manufacturer? We hope this list of considerations when buying a new PC is helpful but if you’re still not sure then get in touch and we’ll be happy to help. Bax Computer Services (www.baxcomputers.co.uk)

Billingshurst’s five-year Plan launched at Billingshurst Show
B
rilliant sunshine and blue skies set the scene for the public presentation of Billingshurst’s new five-year Community-led Plan at the Billingshurst Show on Sunday, 30th June. More than a hundred residents visited the stand to review display panels summarising the document and to see the Plan itself before its imminent publication. The stand was run jointly by the three drafting organisations: Billingshurst Parish Council, Billingshurst Community Partnership and Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce. Representatives of the drafting team were on hand all afternoon to answer questions and to encourage youngsters to create pictures based on the Plan’s seven main topics. Each picture will be considered for use in the finished publication. The Plan, ‘Billingshurst today and tomorrow, Community-led Plan 2014-19’, is to be illustrated throughout by local children who each interpret the different sections through their own creativity. The Plan is structured under seven ‘Topics’: Economy, Transport and Parking, Senior Citizens, Youth, Open Spaces and Environment, Community Safety, and Health and Wellbeing – each has its
own clearly stated Objective and Action Schedule that identifies the issues, how they will be addressed, with whom, and when. In its introduction, the Plan says, “The changing world in which we live creates countless opportunities for all of us in and around Billingshurst. That is, of course, if we want them and want to seize them”. It adds, “Of course there are challenges ahead. This is because some may like things ‘just as they are’ while others want to see things ‘move on’”. The document faces ‘new homes and planning’ head on too. “The thorny issue of new housing and development must be addressed openly and frankly because the needs of our village and our families change, and we must anticipate that”. Prior to printing, the Plan can be read online at www.billingshurst.gov.uk; www.billingshurst-community.org.uk; and www.billingshurstchamber.co.uk. Jubilee Fields Fishing Lake Swimming in the lake (pictured left) is DANGEROUS and could result in death or serious illness. It also damages lake life. Swimming in the lake is an OFFENCE as it breaks a local by-law and those caught doing so will be dealt with by the Police. Please call the Police on 101 if you see someone swimming in the lake.
Station Road Gardens and Dogs Thank you to everyone that responded to the article June’s Village Tweet about dogs and Station Road Gardens. The responses showed overwhelming support to allow dogs to continue to be welcome in Station Road Gardens. The Council has agreed to continue to welcome dogs at Station Road Gardens and hopes that their owners will adhere to the following Code of Conduct for Dog Owners: • Please always clear up after your pets and either place the waste in the bin provided or take it home with you. • If your dog has any aggressive tendencies, please keep it on a lead at all times. Reports of dangerous dogs will be taken very seriously and will be reported to the relevant authorities. • If your dog is prone to becoming over-excited and boisterous please place it on a lead when other people or dogs are present. Please remember that some people do not like dogs and are frightened of them. • Please throw items for your dogs responsibly and show consideration for other users of Station Road Gardens when doing so. • Please keep your dogs out of the fenced off play areas at all times. BILLINGSHURST PARISH COUNCIL & THE FRIENDS OF STATION ROAD GARDENS WOULD LIKE ALL USER GROUPS TO BE ABLE TO ENJOY THE FACILITY HARMONIOUSLY & THANK DOG OWNERS FOR THEIR CO-OPERATION
By-Election A vacancy existed on Billingshurst Parish Council following the resignation of a Councillor in early May. Shortly after, 10 parishioners signed a request for a by-election. Only one candidate came forward, so Sue Kingston was elected uncontested to Billingshurst Parish Council. A very warm welcome to Sue. Parish Council Meeting – Wednesday 3 September 2014, 7.30pm Adversane Hall

Gatwick noise consultation ‘gobbledygook’ claim Coneyhurst residents
T
hirty families in Coneyhurst have raised an interesting issue about the ‘trial’ flights that now overpass the settlement at around 4,000 feet, up to every two minutes. Previously, flights were few and far between. The current 12-week ‘trial’ flights run until 14th August but they cannot complete the questionnaire because of its complexity. Gatwick’s stated aim is to double flight movements as soon as possible to accommodate 40 million passengers a year by 2020. This will be achieved by ‘new technology’ and proposed new flight paths that overfly Billingshurst and its surrounding countryside settlements, the documents state. But while the Coneyhurst residents have a major problem with the noise intrusion, their frustration right now is about understanding Gatwick’s consultation document (www.gatwickairport.com/ gatwickairspaceconsultation) and its questionnaire. They claim they are so ‘technical and mind bogglingly complex’ that it is impossible to answer. There are 124 pages in all. “The Coneyhurst residents understand Gatwick’s need to expand but first we need to understand the issues and consequences so that we can make a sensible submission by 14th August”, said resident Martin Spurrier on behalf of 30 families making up more than 100 people. “To the average person it is incomprehensible, and one has to question either the competence of the research contractor or Gatwick’s motives”. The consultation document itself is 106 pages long and includes 49 maps and asks 35 questions. Called ‘gobbledygook’ by a veteran RAF officer, residents suggest that this research technique casts doubt over the sincerity of the exercise. The questionnaire is a further 18 pages and includes 224 tick-boxes in 9 questions broken into 26 sub-questions. The glossary of technical expressions alone contains 53 abbreviations listed over 4 pages. “We cannot responsibly answer the questions”, said Mr Spurrier. “We can’t understand them, and we get no help from Gatwick when we ask for it”. The consultation documents invites feedback but states, remarkably, “We will not enter into correspondence with individual respondents on
issues relating to this consultation”. It also says, extraordinarily, “If you have any questions please email gatwickairspacechanges@ipsos.com or call the enquiries line on 0808 141 3061. Please note we cannot deal with questions about the consultation document”. However, residents did get a reply to an e-mail asking several specific questions but claim that none was answered and they were referred back to the website FAQs about which the questions were being asked. The Coneyhurst Concerned Group points out that Gatwick’s ‘consultation’ and ‘feedback’ exercise has been farmed out to sub-contractors, ‘The Ipsos MORI Consultation Team’, part of a ‘leading UK research company with global reach’. Its stated mission is its dedication to its clients’ success. “We hope that this client’s success is not at the expense of its own stakeholders”, said Mr. Spurrier. Coneyhurst residents claim that some flights now start as early as 4.15am and continue until after 1am. From their own measurements, each flight raises the noise from the countryside ambient day-time level of around 36dBA to above 90dBA, the kind of noise level in the High Street when a bus goes past, an increase of nearly 300%. Gatwick states in its document that the ‘annoyance’ level is 57dBA and 90dBA causes sleep disturbance. The spokesman said that the Coneyhurst position, like that of others in the countryside, is that the life they specifically chose and invested in has been changed radically – from negligible noise to the officially disruptive levels – and, most importantly, that Gatwick seems to be making a concerted effort to hinder representations and requests for advice. “We hope that Gatwick will hear us and will live up to their stated claim that they care about their surrounding communities”, Mr Spurrier said. “The facts do not support this, and we hope that all concerned residents will take considered action immediately. We hope too that Gatwick will recognise that their consultation is incomprehensible and this casts doubt on its motives. We hope sincerely for a response from a responsible person so that we can make a considered submission”, the spokesman said. Martin Spurrier (Martin can be emailed via the Editor)
