lthough the Billingshurst Show took place at the end of June, press schedules being what they are, it is not until the August issue that I can publish the report. You can read Paul Starkey’s account of the show on page 10, I only wish I could include more photos! Several readers have contacted me to say how much they enjoyed Part 1 of Brian Thompson’s wartime memories. (Part 2 is on page 8.) I am waiting to hear from someone who knew some of the characters in the piece – that would be really special!

Barbecued Fruit

Barbecuing fruit is a lovely way to bring out its natural sweetness. You can use your own favourite fruits

METHOD

Serves 6

1. Stand the pineapple on its flat base, and use a knife to trim down the sides, cutting off all the skin. Cut out any remaining woody bits. Cut into quarters lengthways then carefully cut off and discard the core from each quarter. This leaves the lovely sweet flesh. Chop into chunks. 2. Halve the peaches or nectarines and discard the stones, then cut into large chunks. 3. Pick the leaves off the strawberries and leave whole. To make the sauce 1. Melt the knob of butter in a pan over a medium heat. 2. Finely chop half the orange zest, add it to the pan, then add the juice. Add the honey, cloves and cinnamon stick. Warm through for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, then remove the cloves and cinnamon stick. To cook the fruit 1. Rub the bars of a clean grill, barbecue or griddle pan with a little vegetable oil. Make sure it's really hot. 2. Lightly drop the fruit chunks on to the bars and let them cook for a few minutes. Different fruits cook at different speeds so keep lifting the pieces with tongs and checking underneath. When the fruit is soft, remove it from the heat. A little charring is fine and characteristic of barbecued food. To Serve 1. Transfer all the cooked fruit to a bowl and pour the warm syrup over. Toss everything together until nicely coated. 2. Divide the fruit between six plates. Serve immediately with vanilla ice cream or natural yoghurt.

Baker’s Elephantastic Raises Dough for Charity

T

he team at Jengers Craft Bakery are all ready for the launch of August’s Elephantastic fund raiser. Baker, Mark Sheath, who is an Executive Committee Member of the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce, coordinator of the event in Billingshurst, said, “We are delighted to be part of the Billingshurst herd. The Chamber is coordinating the sponsors of 15 elephants in and around the village with proceeds going to charity”. He added, “This is great for the businesses and retailers involved as there will be a Billingshurst Trail and we will also be part of the Rural Trail. In all, there will be 185 sponsored elephants in Horsham and the supporting villages. Our share of the funds raised will go to the Chamber’s two nominated children’s charities, Dame Vera Lynn Trust and Chestnut Tree House”. Sponsors decorate their own elephant and Mark’s is, appropriately, in his Bakery colours and holding a loaf of bread in his trunk. “I don’t think Eli’s very realistic loaf will taste as good as our fresh ones as it

is made of polystyrene!” Billingsghurst sponsors are: Jengers Craft Bakery, Global Finance, Book-a-Gift, Essential Harmony, Fowlers Estate Agents, Rotary Club of Billingshurst, Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce, Chestnut Tree House, CoCo’s, Across the Globe, Henry Adams, Pet Doctors, Austens and the Billingshurst Post Office. The overall Elephantastic event is organised by The Rotary Club of Horsham, supported by the Town Business Partnership, Horsham Unlimited CIC Ltd, and Horsham District Council. In addition, local charity Born Free is a partner to the overall event and their current campaign to create an Elephant Sanctuary in Europe. The Elephantastic Trails open for five weeks in the school holidays from 25th July to 30th August. Elephant Trail and competitions and prizes will be announced on the ‘Elephantastic’ Facebook page and soon to be launched website (name not known as we go to press, try Googling ‘Elephantastic Horsham’). Martin Spurrier, Chamber of Commerce Chairman

Pamper & Tea raises over £700 for Macmillan

O

n a beautiful sunny afternoon in June, in a pretty summer garden in Storrington, an afternoon of Pampering and Afternoon Tea was enjoyed by many local residents. Katie provided the pampering with her wide range of Aloe Vera skincare products for people to try and several ladies took advantage of the minimakeovers on offer. A wide selection of plants were on sale and the Plant Tombola proved as popular as ever. The Macmillan ladies were on hand selling home-made cakes, jams and marmalades and delicious Cream Teas were served as people chatted under the shade of the trees and umbrellas. A very pleasant way to spend a summer’s afternoon raising a wonderful £700+ for Macmillan for local people affected by cancer. A huge THANK YOU to everyone for their very generous support. Together we really can make a difference. Dianne Bailey Macmillan Volunteer Photo: Chris Stacey and Di Williams on the cake stall

WW2 Evacuee

From London to West Sussex Recollections of Brian Thompson, Wartime Evacuee – Part 2 Continued from last month… fter a few weeks two more evacuees arrived at the Perry household. They were a brother and sister from Streatham, not a long haul from where I lived in Peckham. They were John and Pat Shannon; John would have been about ten years old and Pat around eight. We shared a room with the three of us sharing a double bed. We all got along pretty well and attended the local school at Shipley which was about three and a half miles through the castle estate. Quite a hike for children of that age on our own; we were not used to walking such long distances but we took to it pretty well. I don’t know how long we stayed with the Perrys, several months I think, before Mr Perry was called up for military service. In the event he failed on medical grounds but was pressed into service as an ambulance driver in London instead. This was a big blow for them as it meant giving up their tied cottage and moving house to be nearer London but what was to become of us three evacuees? We used to have groceries delivered by van from a shop in Coolham call ‘GOOD’. Ironically, the man who drove that van was named Mr London who lived at ‘Hinkhurst’ in the village of Brooks Green. Whether Mr London was persuaded to take us three children in or whether he made that decision for himself we will never know but I often wonder if he may have regretted later. Well, it has taken some time to get to this point but now I have the whole picture in my mind I hope I am able to go on with the purpose of remembering some of the things that happened to me while living at ‘Hinkhurst’. How we made the journey from the Knepp Castle estate to Brooks Green I don’t remember. I think it would have been too far to walk even though we were pretty well used to walking by now, perhaps we travelled in Mr London’s delivery van I can’t recall but I do remember well my first impression of the house – it was very rustic. Although the house was pretty and larger than any I had ever lived in before it lacked a few things I had been used to in my previous London life. There was no running water, no gas or electricity, not even a radio and certainly no telephone. How would we manage? But we did manage and very well at that. Brooks Green was just a handful of houses, rather than a village, situated between Coolham and Barns Green. ‘Hinkhurst’ stood on a small lane, now called Emms Lane although I never heard it called by that name when I lived there. Although it was just a narrow lane the surface was metallised and the occasional

Southdown single-decker bus would come by. ‘Hinkhurst’ was used by the Southdown Bus Company as a ‘Parcel Drop’. (Traders in Horsham could take parcels to the bus office in the Carfax and have them delivered by bus to a specified Drop Point.) The bus would arrive at the stop outside the house, the conductor (buses had both driver and conductor then) would bring the parcel to the door and it would remain there until collected by whoever had ordered the goods. Later when I had got used to the routine I would meet the bus and collect the parcel to save the conductor the walk to the house. Sometimes the parcel was from a fish shop, usually on a Saturday, I soon learned not to meet the bus on that day, especially if the weather was warm! The house was owned by Mr and Mrs London and they had two children, Jack (aged around 15 or 16) who was an apprentice carpenter at Bakers, the builders in Southwater, and Elsie (12/13) who attended Coolham school. It had three bedrooms, a fairly large kitchen, a sitting room and a parlour that was out of bounds to us except on a Sunday afternoon when we were allowed to enter and read books. The Londons had a wonderful set of Encyclopaedia Britannica that fascinated me. There was also a scullery where we washed night and morning with water from the pond that we collected in a wooden-handled pewter bowl making sure that we flicked all the water boatmen (an aquatic insect) out first. There was no bath or hot water and in the four years that I lived there I never had a bath or washed my hair. What unsavoury characters we must have been, a far cry from today’s standard of hygiene. The house had a fairly large garden with a lawn in the front and a vegetable patch further away. Mr London grew most of the vegetables for the house and the soil was complemented by the product of the outside toilet at the end of the garden, a place that you never visited after dark, much too scary. There was also a large corrugated shed that housed a very old motorcycle and sidecar that never moved in my time. There was no other transport at the house, Mr London kept his works van next to the shed otherwise there was no other means of transport except for the two bicycles owned by Jack and Elsie. There was also an old pig sty used for storing logs and a small paddock with a smallish orchard. By the pond was an old Medlar tree, something that I had never seen before. To be continued… Photo: ‘Hinkhurst’ c.1901, very much as it would have looked in WW2. The boy in the cart became Mr London, Brian’s carer

capacity crowd enjoyed the Billingshurst Show at the Recreation Ground, Billingshurst on 28th June, where the theme for the Carnival Procession was a patriotic Red White and Blue. Led by the Petworth Band, the procession featured a colourful mix of floats and walking displays. Billingshurst Family Church were well-deserved winners of the cup for the best Carnival Procession entry with their ‘Red Barrows’ formation display, with Wakoos second and Parbrook Cubs third. Carnival Princess Jessica Gould was accompanied by attendant Lily Stocker, together with flower girls Lily Smith and Amelia Harvey Gay. There was music throughout the afternoon in the Food Court from the Weald Band, Last Resort Ukuleles, Five Foot Two making a very welcome return to the show, and finishing with a set from local legend Willie Austen. The crowds were entertained during the afternoon with a full programme of arena events including baton twirling by Horsham Bluebelles, music from the Petworth Band and the popular Formation Wheelbarrow Display from Billingshurst Scouts and Guides. Jason Shorten brought border collies Stripe and Sid plus a gaggle of Indian Runner Ducks for two very popular Dog & Duck displays, and the British Lawnmower Racing Association showed off their skills

in an exciting display. The afternoon was rounded off by a heroic party of volunteers gamely trying to win a tug of war with a steam engine. Elsewhere there was another very successful Dog Show, owls, animals from calves and goats to ferrets, bees and cockroaches, donkey rides, and stalls and attractions for all the family. Organising Committee Chairman Paul Starkey said, “We try to make sure that the Billingshurst Show remains a Five Foot Two traditional, family-friendly village show. It was lovely to see the large crowds here today enjoying the show, and it’s particularly good to see so many stalls from the local community.” Paul Starkey commented, “Many people contribute to making the Billingshurst Show a success, and I’d like also to thank everyone on the Organising Committee, which is made up of Rotary Club members and supporters of Billingshurst Scouts & Guides, our many helpers beforehand and on the day, and our sponsors and Climbing wall advertisers, especially our Principal Sponsors Austen Home Hardware, Coco’s, Fowlers, Gozone, Harwoods and JML Law, who have all been extremely generous with their support. “The aims of the Show are to provide a great day out for the local community and to raise money for local charities. This year we are hoping to raise up to £10,000 which represents a great effort from all concerned.” Paul Starkey Lawnmower racing

What is positivity? Many people think that it’s looking to the future for things to get better. “I will be happy when I get that promotion” or “I’ll be happy when I get a bigger house and happier still when I get a faster car”. This is wishful thinking. Positive thinking, however, is the ability to reprogram your subconscious mind not to have negative thoughts but to replace them with positive ones. This will happen but you need to be consciously aware of what your ‘inner chatter’ is. You know those thoughts: “I can’t do this as I’m not good enough,” or “I’m scared that everyone will laugh at me doing the presentation”. These are negative beliefs counteracting positive actions. Contact me to discover how to achieve your dreams. First phone session is free.

Book reviews

A Good Read August’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Mum on the Run – Fiona Gibson Running is increasing in popularity these days, and Laura decides to get in on the act. A disastrous attempt in the Mum’s race at Sports Day spurs Laura on to change her life. She joins a ‘fat club’ and takes up running, determined not to be humiliated at Sports Day the next year. Oh yes, and there is the matter of Celeste: the young, alluring French teacher she sees flirting with her husband, Jed. So, the running sessions in the local park begin, spurred on by her new running partner who happens to be called Danny, but she doesn’t tell Jed that. Full of humour and wit this novel is a great summer read. Mums all over the country will identify with Laura as she tries to survive life as the mum of three children, including a hormonal soon-to-be-teenager and a preschooler. Fears that her marriage is over lead Laura to make decisions that have unforeseen consequences: ones that she would probably rather not repeat! Laura is a character that the reader warms to straightaway and you find yourself rooting for her to succeed – in her running and in her love life. The storyline may be a tad predictable at times, but that does not spoil your enjoyment of

this book. A perfect summer read. Robot Girl – Malorie Blackman How would you feel if your dad created a robot? More specifically, a robot who looked like you, with your memories? This is the situation that Claire finds herself in, when her inventor dad introduces her to AI-E. But all is not as it seems. Claire finds AI-E repulsive and surprisingly vulnerable with her squidgy soft skin. She wonders how her dad can do this to her. Sharing her concerns with her mum, she is reassured that everything will be okay if Claire can just learn to control her feelings. But she can’t, and so she plans to destroy AI-E. Until she learns… well, that would spoil it, wouldn’t it? This very short story (only 72 pages) from acclaimed children’s writer Malorie Blackman was originally published as a part of an anthology in 1997 and was published as a standalone book in 2015. Given its length this may be one more for the library than purchase, but don’t let that put you off. Aimed at a younger audience than Blackman’s other novels (8+) this book is marketed specifically for struggling, reluctant, and dyslexic readers, but is sure to be enjoyed by everyone.

Prostate Cancer UK to benefit from Marathon

T

his year will see the 33rd running of the Barns Green Half Marathon. On Sunday 27th September at the new earlier time of 10am, hundreds of runners will begin the 13-mile race, streaming through Barns Green, Itchingfield, the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School and close to Southwater in what is one of the most scenic races in the country. Once again numerous charities, local organisations and youth groups are set to benefit from the event and this year’s chosen charity is Prostate Cancer UK, the UK’s largest men’s health charity. It aims to help more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life. The staff, Trustees, Patrons, Ambassadors and Volunteers all work towards one goal: ensuring men are put at the centre of everything it does. Prostate Cancer UK has invested millions of pounds into research, services and awareness over the last ten years. It provides services to men and their families like Specialist Nurses, one-toone support and information leaflets. Prostate Cancer UK also leads the way in providing prostate education to medical professionals. One of Prostate Cancer UK’s ambassadors, legendary rock drummer Kenney Jones, will act as the official starter for this year’s race. Jones, who was diagnosed with Prostate cancer himself in 2013 has played with some of the biggest rock bands in the world. He was a founder member of The Small Faces in 1965 before the band recruited Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood in 1969 and became The Faces. Jones was also the drummer for The Who from 1978. He lives locally in Ewhurst. Kenney Jones commented, “I was delighted when I was asked to start this year’s Barns Green Half Marathon. It is one of the great local events and of course I am very close to this year’s official charity, Prostate Cancer UK who do such great work. I hope that everyone will give generously at

the car-park collections and that the race is a huge success and raises lots of much needed money”. The Barns Green Half Marathon is once again sponsored by some major companies: Berkeley Homes, MoreThan, Motorline Horsham Toyota and Bluecoatsports. Their great support will add to the money which is raised in the carparks and on the Green on race day which will go to Prostate Cancer UK. However, it is not just the official charity that will benefit from the Barns Green Half Marathon. Each year hundreds of pounds are raised for different charities, local organisations and youth groups. Last year, the race raised around £12,000. In addition many of the runners taking part in the race also raise money for various charities and several local organisations, sports clubs and youth groups also receive donations for their help and support with the race organisation. Barns Green Half Marathon Chairman, Vernon Jennings, said, “We are delighted to be supporting Prostate Cancer UK as our official charity and are particularly thrilled that Kenney Jones has agreed to start our race this year. The work done by Prostate Cancer UK is invaluable and recently we have had first hand experience in the village of the great job that they do. I hope that everyone who takes part in this year’s race or comes along to cheer on the runners will support the vital work that they do”. For more information on Prostate Cancer UK, visit; www.prostatecanceruk.org For further details on the race visit the Barns Green Half Marathon website: www.barnsgreen-half.org.uk Nigel Currie, Barns Green Half Marathon Committee, Tel: 07774 229305 Oval photo: Kenney Jones. Community / About the house What a Great Day Out!

O

n Saturday 13th June the sun shone on the many families who visited the Loxwood Fête and Fun Dog Show at North Hall. The Fête was again geared up to attract families with young children who were treated to numerous free rides and other attractions. Not only was the Fun Dog Show a tremendous success, the crowds were entertained with a wide variety of attractions including the Slinfold Concert Band, the North Singers, classic cars, donkey rides, Fishers Farm Park animals and especially for the children, Punch and Judy, the Balloon Man, Bouncy Castle and Slide. There were many other popular attractions including the barbecue, bar, refreshments and many stalls. Visitor numbers were up considerably on last year. This ensured that the Fête made an even greater profit than last year, around £5,500, which will be distributed to our local deserving causes. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people involved in making this Fête a huge success, especially the Fête Committee who work extremely hard during the year to ensure that the Fête goes from strength to strength. We would also like to thank our Sponsors and Advertisers, those who donated prizes and our many local volunteers who gave their time. Next year’s Fête will be held on Saturday 11th June. If you wish to advertise in the programme or have a stall, please contact Graham Moore on (01403) 751722 or email ginamoore@btopenworld.com.

HDC welcomes Airports Commission’s recommendation

H

orsham District Council welcomes the Airports Commission’s recommendation proposing Heathrow Airport for additional runway capacity in the South East. As has been reported in Village Tweet in recent months, the Council has always been opposed to a second runway at Gatwick because of the very considerable detrimental effect it would have on the physical, social and economic environment. Councillor Ray Dawe, Leader at Horsham District Council, has welcomed the Commission’s recommendation, saying, “We have constantly made it clear that a second runway at Gatwick would have a fundamental impact on the general character of the district and on the lives of everyone who works and lives here. We are therefore extremely relieved that Sir Howard has listened to, and understood, our concerns.” Heather Pepper, Horsham District Council

Memory jog John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

A

few weeks ago I gave a small talk to a local and during the cross-chat that makes such an event so interesting, the talk moved to the memories that we all had of times gone by. My starting point had been about the pre-Common Market period, when, as a fruit grower, I had witnessed the huge upheaval that the industry had faced at that time. Afterwards, as I went over in my mind what things I should have said and what I had failed to include (anyone who has spoken in public will appreciate this self-analysis as a compulsory torture) there leapt to the fore a memory of a series of events that involved a group of our ‘orchard ladies’. In those early years the girls would, following the harvesting of the apples, move into the packing shed to grade the fruit and send it off to the markets to clear the stores before the start of the new year. No apples were allowed into the country until after the Christmas market so the tree-ripened fruit would be slowly packed and marketed to clear the farms before the influx of these high volumes of imports. Once we had joined Europe this barrier disappeared and it heralded the building of huge cold and atmosphere controlled stores to try to smooth out the sudden glut of fruit that flooded the market at the year’s ending. Now… up to this sad time, the girls who picked and then packed the fruit would often then move into the orchards to help with the pruning. Trees in those days were much larger than the hedgerow systems of today and involved a great deal of ladder work when doing the job. Nowadays you would probably have to send everyone on a ladder climbing course and prepare for litigation should the inevitable crash occur. (We always claimed you were never a fully qualified apple picker until you fell off your ladder!) Anyway, the event that came to me as I reflected on those times was of a particularly hard winter that hit us just after the festivities had finished and the girls had been dispatched to the orchards. There were half a dozen of them working down the rows of large Cox trees, each one climbing the old heavy wooden orchard ladders. This was accompanied by various phrases uttered by them as they battled to stay on the slippery rungs that were coated with the ice from their frozen boots. At half ten in the morning all stopped for a break

26

and, seated on the lower rungs of their ladders, they gathered together for a natter and a hot drink from their flasks, along with a snack, to try to ward off the effects of the biting cold. It should be noted here that they had company in the orchards. The farm’s livestock at the time was a large flock of sheep who spent the winter in the surrounding meadows that circled the orchards. These ewes were accompanied by their menfolk: four large – very large – Suffolk rams. This is a breed that have no horns, but instead have developed a ridge of bone on their foreheads that will withstand the pounding of a club hammer – should the need arise! When they resort to rival sparring they will stand many feet apart and then hurtle themselves at each other which finishes with a sickening thud. They then just give their heads a shake and back off to repeat the process until one or the other just gets bored with the whole idea and ambles off to chew some grass. These lads had been released into the orchards to rebuild themselves up after the strenuous efforts of the autumn mating time. They had now ceased to knock the six bells out of each other that was the usual part of the pre-nuptial ritual and although still quite skittish they wandered amongst the trees in relatively peaceful harmony. On this day they had meandered into the same area as the girls and they now stood and pondered the presence of these humans with the food bags. FOOD… You could see their brains slowly digesting the idea that there could be good pickings among this motley crew. So they advanced. The girls took one look at the quartet of solid forms and, as one, tried to hide behind their tripod ladders. The rams followed, noses raised in the hope of a titbit. Within a very short space of time the whole thing developed into mayhem. The girls ran one way, the rams the other. Ladders were rammed aside by heads as hard as nails and shrieks accompanied the girls as they sought refuge in the bowels of the trees. I must admit that I failed to give any assistance to their distress. It’s very difficult to help when you are in fits of laughter. And besides, I was safely up one of the trees myself! The girls did manage to save enough strength to give me a sound verbal onslaught once the rams had tired of the game. At least it warmed them up and made a great talking point for days afterwards. Funny how little episodes leap to mind when the memory is jogged. Great days! John Nash

Billingshurst ÂŁ425,000

This charming character Sussex style cottage is situated just south of Billingshurst. The accommodation offers features including exposed wall and ceiling beams that blend well with the modern fitted bathroom and country style family kitchen. As you enter the property via a shared five bar gate, there is an open area of parking laid to shingle with access to the detached garage and gated entrance to the sweeping garden plot. There is a pergola with creeping vines making for the perfect alfresco dining area and the remainder is laid to lawn with a garden shed. The garden is L-shaped around the front and side of the house and is nicely secluded from the road by mature trees, hedgerow and shrubs. There is a pitched gable entrance through a storm porch to the sitting room which has a dominating Inglenook fireplace as the main feature. The space is dual aspect with window to the front and rear, but it is a cosy room, perfect for whiling away winter evenings. A door leads from the sitting room into a bright and airy second reception room with windows to front and side aspect; it has direct access to the garden and is truly adaptable making an ideal summer family room or formal dining room. A door leads into the study which is also dual aspect and has a door to the rear external courtyard area. The kitchen is a really inviting part of the accommodation; the perfect environment for entertaining friends with a drink or for everyday meals. There are matching base and eye level units with cupboards and drawers. There is a built in electric oven and hob, integrated sink and drainer with mixer taps and space for a dishwasher. There are dual aspect windows to front and rear with exposed ceiling beams overhead.

There is a supporting pillar that gives the room a natural divide with an area to the front that accommodates the breakfast table. There is a door to a utility room which houses the boiler and accommodates the ground floor W.C. The first floor offers four bedrooms and a modern fitted bathroom. There is a rear aspect window over the stairs in the landing and two slim storage cupboards as well as the larger storage cupboard that houses the hot water tank. The master bedroom has dual aspect views to front and side over the garden. It is a lovely bright and spacious feeling room with a range of built in wardrobes. Opposite the entrance is the fourth bedroom or first floor study which could easily be used as a dressing room. There are two further double bedrooms which face to the front. The contemporary style family bathroom offers a double ended free standing roll top bath, in keeping with the age of the property. There is an independent shower cubicle, pedestal wash hand basin and low level W.C. There is a step in the floor which has inset LED lights that blends well with the ceiling downlights. The whole arrangement is a perfect balance between the period character of the beams and the modern twist on the bathroom.

This impressive family home offers well-arranged accommodation with a galleried landing as the nucleus of the space. Situated away from the road in a secluded cul-de-sac this property offers more than initially meets the eye. As you approach the property, which is of Georgian styling and modern build, it sits at a slightly raised elevation. There is a hard paved driveway leading to three neighbouring properties, of which this is one. There is a gated tandem car port and a paved path leads through the wrought iron railings and gate to a small town house style front garden. In front of the property there is an open area of lawn with a mature tree, we understand that our vendors have acquired half of that land. The entrance hall has stairs rising to the first floor in a central position as you enter, with doors to a small storage cupboard and the various rooms including a study, sitting room, cloakroom W.C., kitchen and dining room. The kitchen and dining rooms, which are as ever the hub of the home, offer scope for use as an open space or separate rooms. They are currently open plan by way of an archway with natural Limestone flooring throughout, but each room has a door from the hall, making it an adaptable part of the house. The kitchen is serviced by a utility room which has a wall mounted gas boiler, sink with drainer and appliance space for a washing machine and tumble dryer. The kitchen itself is fitted with a dishwasher, gas hob with extractor and built in eye level electric double oven. There are views to the rear garden from the kitchen so keeping a watchful eye on children or pets whilst preparing meals is easily achieved. The sitting room is dual aspect with a slim side aspect window and windows with double doors opening to the garden. There is a limestone fireplace with gas fire as a focal point and the Walnut wood flooring that continues from the entrance hall helps to create a maintainable space.

The study offers nice views to the side and front and is of a decent proportion for formal use or to accommodate the family computer. The first floor has the real character feature of this family home, with a front aspect window standing in a recess next to a storage cupboard. The doors to the various first floor rooms are arranged around the U-shape galleried landing. The master bedroom has rear aspect views over the garden and built in wardrobes. There is an en-suite shower room. There are three further decent sized bedrooms two of which with either built in or fitted storage. The family bathroom has rear aspect obscure double glazed window, with a low level W.C., wash hand basin, panel enclosed bath and independent shower cubicle. The bonus bedroom above the car port is very spacious and has a front aspect dormer bay window and rear aspect Velux style window. There is also built in eaves storage. The rear garden is deceptively large. There is gated side access to the car port and a paved patio spans the width of the house, with a raised lawn enclosed by panel fencing and mature trees with flowers and shrubs. The plot continues around from the rear to the north western corner where a large area is currently segregated with a garden shed. There is a possibility that this could be used for extension development, subject to the usual planning consents. In summary, this is an efficient, practical and sizeable family home, located in a super spot with good access to the local schools, railway station and village amenities.

had its annual haircut just in time for some very hot days; they must be so relieved. It’s also good to see how they look under all that fleece and every single one was the correct body condition score which tells me our winter and spring husbandry was OK. For the younger goats I managed to procure a play cube with slide locally and they love it, I can even wedge hay underneath the platform for added interest. The game ‘shove your mate down the slide’ seems to be the most popular. Sadly we missed the having fun! Billingshurst Show this year. I had to work and so instead organised for other West Sussex Smallholder Club members to take goats and pigs to the show. However, that had to be cancelled at the eleventh hour as there was a problem with the type of Defra licence that had been applied for. So frustrating but we’ll be back next year. uring World War II and immediately afterwards, almost everyone with a garden grew fruit and vegetables. Food was rationed so people supplemented their diet with produce they’d grown in their own back garden, or down on their allotment. To me the very word ‘allotment’ evokes memories of my granddad and postwar community spirit. During the 1960’s allotments began to go out of fashion and continued to decline in popularity until very recently. As a society we were more affluent and tended to buy what produce we needed from the local supermarket; vegetable gardening just wasn’t considered sexy! There’s an old saying: what goes around comes around, and it encapsulates perfectly the fate of allotments which are currently enjoying a popularity surge. Suddenly we’re concerned about food in a big way. The number of food banks is growing as families struggle to put even the most basic provisions on the table. There are concerns about additives and pesticides on shop-bought fruit and veg, while the cost of organic food puts it out of the reach for many. And what about all those thousands of food-miles our strawberries and courgettes clock up on their journey to the supermarket shelves? Surely that’s damaging the environment. Then there’s the increasing problem of childhood obesity. The list of foodrelated concerns seems to be growing exponentially. In the absence of clear leadership from the

top, many of us are taking matters into our own hands, deciding to emulate our grandparents and grow our own food. Yet modern housing often means tiny back gardens and frequently no front garden, so where are we going to grow all this lovely produce? The answer of course is to acquire an allotment. To join them simply approach your council. Price and availability varies around the country. In some areas there are waiting lists. But councils are taking allotments much more seriously and many are actively seeking to provide new sites. If a plot is too large for your personal needs you may be able to find a like-minded friend to share the rent with. Enquire today and you and your family could soon, quite literally, be reaping the benefits! www.nsalg.org.uk Rachel Leverton Allotment Benefits Diet. We work hard throughout the year to make our gardens look good so, when the sun shines it’s great to simply kick back, relax and enjoy some quality time outdoors and in comfort. When it comes to buying garden furniture the choices can be mindboggling. But if style, comfort, durability and timeless elegance feature on your wish list, then synthetic rattan surely ticks every one of those boxes. As it’s highly resistant to weathering and durable, perhaps it’s not surprising that we see so much of it furnishing the outdoor seating areas of upmarket bars, restaurants and gastro pubs, thanks to its low maintenance and good looks. Here at Austen’s Home Hardware Billingshurst we have access to a fantastic range of garden furniture. Ranges to suit any size of space, and budget, all

backed up with the high level of customer service you’d expect from your local independent store. From a two-seater synthetic rattan companion set to an eight-seater dining set, all of which come with contrasting cream cushions, you can be sure of finding something that fits the smallest patio to a grand country estate! Rattan effect furniture has become a popular choice of conservatory furniture, as we like the flexibility of having weatherproof chairs, sofas and tables that can be utilized in the garden when required. Plus its natural looking texture is a great visual means of seamlessly drawing the outdoors indoors. So why not make the most of the summer and add some extra comfort and style to your home and garden. aife Tansey is a 19-year-old showjumper from Barns Green. Raife has been accepted on to the LegUpforTalent scheme, going from a Leg up apprentice to star in just two weeks, helped by phenomenal response to his Facebook page. Legupfortalent is a scheme to help young equestrians find sponsorship within their sport. Raife’s discipline is show jumping and his passion for this sport started when he was eight years old, having inherited his sister’s old pony. Following a trip to Hickstead, he decided to teach himself to jump. Sadly his pony refused to jump, but taught him determination and good sportsmanship, so he bought Back to Black, aka Posh, with money he earned washing up in a local pub. Then a couple of years later he bought Spyder, his main showjumping horse. Both these horses love to jump, and Raife and Spyder are now affiliated to the BSJA and have worked their way up through British Novice, Discovery and are now jumping at Newcomers level, at showgrounds such as Coombelands in Pulborough, Felbridge and at Hickstead in July and September. Raife and Spyder

have been placed many times this year, and have won several of their competitions, and have qualified for the second round in some of their events. Back to Black has also qualified for the Unaffiliated Sunshine Tour finials at Hickstead in September. Raife’s next ambition is to be able to take Spyder on the affiliated Sunshine Tour in Spain next February. He worked there this year as a groom, one of the several jobs he took to fund his showjumping, and would love to be able to take his own horse next year. Raife is already saving for his travel costs, entry fees and stabling, and has entered in to the Mars Milk Play Fund Facebook competition, with the hope of winning £1,000 to go towards this. He needs as many votes as possible, so please go on and vote for him. All Raife’s competitions and achievements are kept up to date on his Facebook page, Raife Tansey Showjumper, so why not go on and like his page and follow this very hard working young man’s progress. www.legupfortalent.com Hayley (Raife’s mother) Photo: LRG Photography

Feeding the competition horse

W

ith the competition season in full swing riders will be looking to get the very best out of their horse. Feeding plays an important part in the management of the competition horse providing the fuel needed for energy as well as maintaining the horse’s general wellbeing. The first step is to make an honest evaluation of the level of work the horse is in. It is important not to overestimate this as providing extra calories the horse does not need will lead to weight gain and possibly unwanted over exuberant behaviour. Light work. This includes hacking for up to an hour including walk, trot and some short canters or schooling for up to 45 minutes 3 to 4 days per week. Most leisure horses fall into this category. Medium work. Low level completions, dressage, showing and show jumping, being hacked or schooled up to 5 days per week for up to an hour per day. Hard work. Three-day eventing, polo, racehorses in training and advanced levels of dressage. Traditionally horses in work have been fed a competition mix or cube. Feed companies tailor their formulations to provide extra energy for the horse to utilise during competition or training. The DE (digestible energy) content is printed on the label, the higher the DE the more energy the feed contains. The energy in mixes and cubes tends to come mostly from cereal grains which can have high starch levels this does have an advantage of providing fast release energy for more intense work, especially where short bursts of energy are required. Latest research has shown that 90% of racehorses suffer from Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) this has been linked to high starch and low fibre diets. Horses need to chew to produce saliva to neutralize stomach acids, a constant supply of fibre also forms a ‘mat’ in the horse’s stomach that helps prevent the acids from sloshing into the upper part of the stomach due to exercise. Research has also shown that feeding Alfalfa also has a buffering effect on stomach acid and a small fibre feed before work can actually be beneficial. Alfalfa is a legume and is naturally high in nutrients and calcium. Alfalfa can provide a level of energy which is the same as a competition mix but is

ten times lower in starch. Also, it takes the horse much longer to eat, and increases chewing time which has a good psychological benefit for the horse. Another great fibre source for the competition horse is sugar beet. It is a by-product of the sugar industry, being the fibourous pulp that is left behind after the sugar is extracted from the beet. Sugar beet comes in molassed and unmolassed forms and is also a great source of naturally occurring prebiotics. These provide the good bacteria in the horse’s gut with a very digestible food source allowing them to multiply and better utilise other fibre sources that are being fed to the horse leading to a healthier gut. Unmolassed sugar beet is very low in sugar and again has a similar energy level to a coarse mix but with much less starch. Molassed sugar beet is a great way to increase the energy content of the diet. Oil is also another fantastic way to provide energy into the diet. Horses actually utilise oil very well and again being high calorie and low starch it is sympathetic to the digestive system. Oil provides lots of calories in a small volume and just 250ml provides as much energy as 1kg of a low energy mix or cube. Feed oil at a rate of no more than 100ml per 100kg of bodyweight per day, increased levels of vitamin E should be fed when feeding oil at a higher rate, contact a nutritionist for advice. Electrolytes are lost on a daily basis through the horse sweating more, especially so in hot weather. A 500kg horse can lose up to 10 litres of sweat during exercise; electrolytes help the body to retain water so a deficiency can be serious. Signs of deficiency include dark urine, listlessness, poor performance and a dull coat. Adding electrolytes to the horse’s water supply is the best way to help him keep a good balance. If he is not a keen drinker they can be added to a wet feed instead, sloppy sugar beet is ideal for this purpose. A salt lick should be provided for the horse to access at all times. All the best for the season ahead and I hope it is a successful one! Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Life on the farm

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

A

fter the 2015 offensive was completed, life was supposed to go on as usual. Pigs fed and watered, deceased hens not fed and watered, sheep fed and watered, guinea pig fed and watered, dogs fed and watered, kids to school and back, Anne and Gary to work and back, Nanny and Grandad to and fro and back. All quiet on the farm front. Nah, life’s not like that… Firstly Dingo died in the middle of the paddock again. This time he was not easy to fix. The guarantee demanded a return to base (somewhere in north England), hardly practical, so after some thought Dingo was sent to the local small engine hospital in Barns Green where he was repaired and sent back better than new. A sigh of relief and a lesson learnt: Never buy something as big as that over the ’net! To replace the deceased hens (you will recall their demise from last month) Anne bought four new hens, black, white, brown and grey (Photo shows two of them – well you try Mr Reynard, you photographing four hens! GP). She had Gary clip their wings to keep Mr Fox hungry. Oh, and Anne bought a new chicken coop; she and Gary spent the weekend putting it together. It looked very flash – the new hens clucked their approval. Grandad mowed half of one of the paddocks and made a footie field for the kids. The lawn heaved a sigh of relief. With the warm weather here, Nanny got the pool up and running so the kids could go swimming, first in wetsuits and then in ordinary swimwear as the water warmed in the sun. “There’s something weird in the pool, Nan,” said Mary one day. Thankfully it turned out to be a swirl of hair tangled up with some bits of algae, because all the girls had long hair. No strange monsters, then, thank goodness. Onto matters ovine, Sally organised all the sheep over four neighbouring properties to be shorn on the same day so that the call out was shared. Thank you, Sally. Nanny added to the catching place so that Rita the Harridan wasn’t in with Siobahn, Ellie and Ethel. Anne and she then had to persuade the four ewes into

the catching place and get the gates tied up to contain them. “Easy,” thought Nanny. “Not easy,” thought Anne. Of course Anne was right. It proved so difficult they left them out until Nanny was able to finish the job later. Rita just grinned. Paul the shearer came and set up. “You can get them out this way,” said Nanny pointing to the ‘gate’. “Nah,” said Paul and leaned over the hurdle and picked one of the girls up and onto the shearing board, easy peasy. And the next one and the next one. Then it was Rita’s turn. She wasn’t going to allow this sort of thing happen to her. She struggled, twisted, kicked, wriggled and squirmed. Paul just waited her out and began to shear. He did one bit and then had to wait her out again, and again and again. Then, almost lying over her to keep her still, he clipped her hooves. She was exhausted, Paul was exhausted, and Nanny was exhausted just looking. No wonder Paul does not like shearing Shetland Sheep! After that Rita ain’t having these! refused to go into the catching place for the morning treats for at least three days. Having shorn the sheep, it was also time to renew the fly strike prevention thingy. Nanny bought all the stuff necessary, got the sheep into the catching place again. Needless to say it was a bit of a circus. Nanny knew what to do theoretically but the actual doing was a bit different. She started with Rita knowing she would be the most difficult. And she was. Nanny carefully squirted the pink stuff down Rita’s back and Rita moved. The pink stuff missed. Then Nanny tried again and this time one of the others caught the tube pipe from applicator gun and bottle. The tube came out and pink stuff squirted out everywhere. Well, everywhere except on the sheep, that is. Nanny reassembled it and tried again. Practise makes perfect (ish) and after Rita it was the others’ turn. After cleaning everything up – including herself – Nanny judged it would be okay. Yes, life does go on as usual on that little farm near Billingshurst. Photo: Grahame Pearson Yvonne Fleece

Greenpower car success for Weald students

S

tudents from The Weald School took a big step towards retaining the National Greenpower car championship title they won last October, while racing at Goodwood on Sunday 14th June. Greenpower car racing involves racing cars built by students aged 11 to 16, and powered by two car batteries. Schools from all over the country compete. This year’s heat at Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit involved 58 cars. Students race over an hour and a half with a minimum of three drivers, with the winner being judged by who has covered the most distance in the time. In Race 1 The Weald’s ‘Purple Predator’ (car No.1 in the photo) won the race, with last year’s champion car (No.3) coming in third place. In Race 2 the same cars achieved second and sixth place. These results secure the places of both cars in the national final later in the year. The Weald is consistently one of the highest

performing schools nationally, having won the competition in 2006 and 2014 and being runnersup in 2010 and 2011. Races also take place at Silverstone and Dunsfold. Year 10 student, Max Mooney, commented, “We were really pleased with how the cars ran but we have much more to do and we know we can go faster and further still. We added some sophisticated electronics to the ‘Purple Predator’ for this race, and they worked a treat”. The design team consists of students and volunteer parents who meet on a Thursday evening after school. If you are a Weald student and are interested, feel free to come along and get involved. Jan Steel, Communications Manager Photo: The Weald School’s cars came 1st and 3rd in Race 1 out of 58 entrants. See also front cover

Billingshurst Primary School’s sizzling Fun Day!

B

illingshurst Primary School hosted its fifth annual Summer Fun Day last month, and this year’s event proved to be the biggest and the best yet. Thanks to a packed programme of activities, and with a little help from the weather, the event outshone all previous years, raising a record-smashing £10,081.51 for the school. As the school’s biggest fundraising event, staff, pupils and families worked together to help make the day such a huge success. The event filled the school field and had something for everyone, from well-loved favourites such as facepainting and cake sales to some exciting new additions in the form of bungee bowling and Total Wipeout. Wellestablished Summer Fun Day traditions such as the Head Teacher and Deputy Head Challenge proved particularly popular with the crowds, as the teachers went head-to-head on the Bungee Run and Shaun the Sheep Rodeo. The

school choir and country dancers entertained visitors throughout the day while a team of teachers battled to be crowned Billingshurst BBQ Masterchef, serving over 200 sausages and 200 burgers. Helen Williamson, head teacher commented, “As ever, we were amazed at the grand total from this fundraising event. We were delighted so many people joined us for a fantastic afternoon of family entertainment. Behind the fun, we have an incredible team who run our parent committee, the BPSCA, and without them this event would not be possible. Thanks to these fundraising efforts every penny raised goes back to the school, providing opportunities for every child, and for that we are very grateful.” Kate Clifford on behalf of the BPSCA Head teacher Helen Williamson on Shaun the Sheep for the first head teacher's challenge. The De-mystification of Email – Part Two Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services

T

his month we take you through the details you need to set up an account on your computer, what they mean and why they are important. So, to set up any kind of email account (one that has its own mailbox) on your mail programme you need to have some key information: 1) The email address; 2) the email account password; 3) the POP or IMAP details and 4) the SMTP details. One: When setting an account up on a browser it will ask for: 1) the User name; 2) the ‘From’ name and 3) the ‘Account’ name. The User name is always your email address. The ‘From’ name is the name you want your recipient to see and the Account name is the private name you use to identify the account (very useful if you have more than one). Two: Password is more obvious. If for any reason you don’t know it and rely on the ‘Remember me’ function you’ll have to change it to enter it to the account settings. Three: There are two types of mailbox accounts. The type you choose determines how you receive your email onto your computer or device. They are known as the Incoming Server Settings and are essentially your secure gateway for getting emails IN. POP (or POP3) accounts download emails from your mailbox (in the sky – your hosting) and put them on your computer via your mail programme. A copy of each message stays in the mailbox for a short time and is then wiped. The other choice is an IMAP account. IMAP works

the same as POP – it puts the message on your computer or device from your mailbox. The difference between the two is simply syncing and space. For example, if you set up a POP account for the same email address on two different computers, any email downloaded from the mailbox in the sky will go to each computer. If you open it on one computer it will still be marked as unread on the other and you’ll have to open it on that one too. With IMAP messages sync, so if you open it on one device, it will show as opened on the other, keeping your inbox tidy and organised. However, for this to happen the message needs to stay in your mailbox in the sky and so if you get lots of messages you’ll need more hosting space and this can cost more. To avoid this you’ll need to delete and once deleted off one device it is gone from ALL your mailboxes for ever! POP3 and IMAP details are usually something like this: pop.oneandone.co.uk or imap.oneandone.co.uk. Finally, SMTP is the gateway for emails going OUT – the ones you send. The details are similar to your incoming ones, e.g. smtp.oneandone.co.uk and are usually the same regardless of whether you have a POP or an IMAP account. We hope that by now understanding those confusing terms and what they mean for your email that you will now have more confidence in setting your account up on your computer. If you still get stuck we can pop out and help for a small fee. Bax Computer Services (www.baxcomputers.co.uk)

Reports take 5-10 minutes online using the Operation Crackdown website www.operationcrackdown.org You will need to provide:

Inconsiderate Parking

• The vehicle registration number (licence plate) • Make, model and colour of vehicle • Details about when and where the incident happened – there is an online map to help you identify the area • Any information that may help them identify the driver • About you – your contact details will be treated in confidence. Leaving your email address will allow Operation Crackdown to make contact with you should the report need clarifying and you will receive details of other services that Sussex Police provide online.

There's a car blocking my drive, what can I do? If a vehicle is blocking access to your driveway, you should first make enquiries with your neighbours to see if they know who the car belongs to. If no one knows, then contact your local authority parking enforcement team at Horsham District Council. Please be aware that although parking on a dropped kerb over a driveway is a parking offence, Police have limited powers when it comes to blocked driveways. Legally, you have a right of access from your driveway onto the street, but not from the street onto your drive. If the registered owner is not contactable and you are unable to get your own vehicle off your driveway, Police will attend to the matter as soon as they are able. If you are able to squeeze by, even with difficulty, then your drive is not actually blocked and Police will not attend. If the matter is a continuing problem rather than a single occasion, then the issue can be addressed as anti-social behaviour, and reported online through the Sussex Police website.

What happens next? Depending on how serious the incident, whether the vehicle has been reported before, and whether the driver falls into a high risk category, Operation Crackdown might: • forward your report to the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit so local officers can take appropriate action. • send a warning letter to the registered keeper of the vehicle. • keep your report in the Crackdown database, providing a history of the vehicle and allegations. • identify and address regular ‘hotspots’ of anti-social driver behaviour. • So it’s ALWAYS worth making a report, even if no immediate action is apparent.

Can I park on the pavement? Local authorities can make an order prohibiting parking on the pavement. If this is the case, then there will be signs which clearly point out on a particular road where parking on the pavement is specifically prohibited. The penalty for contravening this will be a fixed penalty notice. Even if there are no such signs, parking a vehicle on the pavement can cause danger/nuisance for pedestrians and wheelchairs users. It could lead to an offence of obstruction being committed and a fixed penalty notice could be issued.

Can cars park on grass verges? No. Cars cannot park, fully or partly, on council owned grass verges. There will more than likely be a local bylaw to specifically prevent this but there are also a number of other offences that can be committed (unnecessary obstruction, criminal damage to grass, etc). It would only be permitted if the land is privately owned and the landowner has given permission.

Our Community Volunteers – meet the Street Pastors

T

he term ‘Street Pastor’ usually conjures up images of urban areas with drug problems or a gang culture, patrolled in the early hours by Christian volunteers, seeking to be of service to their community. However, here in Billingshurst a small team of volunteers also work to promote a peaceful, safe community and have clocked up an impressive 680 man-hours of service to the village in the past year. Billingshurst Street Pastors was formed two years ago, although the national initiative started in Brixton in 2003. In Billingshurst, the Pastors can be spotted on a weekly basis around the village during the day as well as at night, unlike their nocturnal urban counterparts. Emma, one of the pastors, explained that this was in order to meet a broader range of people in the village. “The remit is to meet people where they are at. We are not evangelising, although the pastors are motivated by their faith. The aim is to meet our community and to demonstrate our beliefs through practical action and support. We are not here to judge people.” They might be found at a village event, perhaps helping reunite a lost child with its parents; another

time checking that someone getting off the last train at night has a lift home. Sometimes they will just listen to someone who needs to talk, respond to the banter of the increasing number of familiar faces on their patrols, or simply pick up litter. Their base is at Trinity United Reformed Church which, along with Billingshurst Family Church and St Mary’s Church, provides the active Street and Prayer Pastors, but they are also supported by St Gabriel’s Church, the Council and the local police. Emma emphasises that they are not working for the police, but that they share a common aim: a peaceful, safe community. The police, in turn, believe that the pastors’ presence has a positive impact and results in a reduction in anti-social behaviour. All pastors go through a programme of continuous training, including modules on First Aid and CPR, Safeguarding and Listening Skills.
