ummer is here, the schools have broken up and many of our villages are hosting fêtes and fairs. These are a lovely way to spend a warm afternoon. Many support local schools and charities so are a good way to give something back to the community. August also means it’s time to head off to The Loxwood Joust. This event seems to go from strength to strength and, last year was held on two weekends and the same applies this year. I attended last year with my family and had a fantastic time. Cars are parked well out of sight which means it takes very little imagination to be transported back to mediaeval times. If you have not been to the Joust before it’s an event not to be missed! Quiche Lorraine
A light dish perfect for summer
METHOD
1. Make the pastry: put the flour into a bowl, rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs, then add the salt and enough water to make a firm dough. Roll it out and line a 20cm/8" loose-bottomed flan tin. Chill in the fridge for 20 minutes. While the pastry is chilling preheat oven to 220°C/gas 7. 2. Prick the pastry case all over with a fork then line it with greaseproof paper. Use baking beans or lentils to weight it down. 3. Bake for ten minutes. Remove the greaseproof paper and bake for another 5-10 minutes until pale golden brown. 4. Reduce the oven temperature to 180°C. 5. Chop the bacon into small pieces and fry in a pan until crisp and golden. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and pop it into the pastry case. Then fry the onion in the bacon fat until that too is golden and add it to the pastry case. Top with the grated cheese. 6. Beat the eggs, cream, salt and pepper together lightly, then pour into the pastry case. 7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until just set. Take care not to overcook the quiche or it will develop a rubbery texture.

News round-up from Billingshurst Wine Circle
M
ay kicked off with an entertaining and informative talk on Australian wines by Nick Poston from Hennings Petworth. We tasted three whites and three reds and of the whites, the favourite was the Hesketh Rules of Engagement Pinot Gris 2013 (also the cheapest!) and of the reds Wakefield Shiraz 2014. Also in May was a Wine Whist organised by the Chairman, Tony White. This does not involve any playing cards, but is an extremely social blind tasting and scoring of seven wines where you get to chat to different people about each wine. The final challenge is an attempt to name the grape and country from a multiple-choice sheet. The usual format, with some members moving clockwise, and others anti clockwise (all depends on the colour of your scoring sheet!) with the big reveal at the end of the evening. The favourite was an Argentinian Malbec closely followed by the Sauvion Chenin Blanc from France. In June, the Circle celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday with a talk and tasting of Commonwealth Wines by Marilyn Ambrose and Mike Dobson. We
tasted six wines which had been selected because they were slightly less common varieties from the chosen countries. A Petritis (white) from Cyprus went down reasonably well, a Pinot Gris from New Zealand was similarly popular, but the Indian Sauvignon Blanc was not a big hit, being somewhat watery. After the break, a slightly unusual Tempranillo from Australia was overshadowed by a smoky Pinotage from South Africa. Finally we toasted the Queen with an English sparkling wine and cake. Full details of all the wines we taste are on our website (below). By the time you read this, we will have held our annual barbecue in July and be on our summer break, restarting on 9th September with a beer tasting with Kissingate Brewery. New members are always welcome. The Circle meets on the 2nd Friday of each month (except August) in St Gabriels Hall, East Street, at 8pm. Please see our website for details: www.billingshurstwineandbeercircle.com. Marilyn Ambrose and Liz Bryder Photo: Toasting the Queen on her 90th birthday

Local businesses needed to join Dragon Boat Festival
S
t Catherine’s Hospice is gearing up for their 14th Dragon Boat Festival and there’s still time for local businesses to sign up for one of the hospice’s busiest and biggest fundraisers. Taking place on Sunday 4th September from 10am to 4pm at Tilgate Park, the festival attracts thousands of spectators to cheer on teams as they race 40ft traditional Chinese Dragon Boats. St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival is a great branding, team building, and networking day out and many businesses return to take part year after year including Just Retirement in Reigate. Pauline, a Payments and Servicing Manager from Just Retirement said, “The day always whizzes by in a blur of excitement and adrenaline. From the morning training, to the fast energy of the races, every part of the day helps shape our team in the most creative way. It’s no wonder everyone wants to keep coming back.” Last year, a new record for fastest finishing time in 13 years of Dragon Boats was created by Virgin Active who finished in 01.02.22. Could it be your team setting a new record and lifting the prestigious trophy this summer? As well as being a fantastic chance for businesses to support their local hospice, the Dragon Boat Festival is a fantastic day out on dry land with activities, entertainment and delicious food and drink.
Local businesses from the Gatwick Diamond – Edwards, Just Retirement and ThermoFisher Scientific, are proudly sponsoring this year's event. Debbie Thompson, from Edwards Vacuum said, “St Catherine’s provides care to people at a difficult time and the Dragon Boat Festival is a great chance for us to show our support for their vital work. We’re looking forward to race day and helping raise funds so St Catherine’s can continue to care for terminally ill patients and their families and friends when and where they’re needed most.” The Dragon Boat Festival is aiming to raise £50,000 for hospice care. Each day it costs St Catherine’s more than £17,000 to provide their care so every penny raised will have an impact. Sarah Achucarro, the charity’s Corporate Development Fundraiser, said, “It’s brilliant that so many local companies have already signed up to support this year’s Dragon Boat Festival. We love seeing teams from so many different industries but there’s still room for others to jump aboard!” To find out more about Dragon Boats, email Sarah Achucarro, Corporate Development Fundraiser on: sarahachuccaro@stch.org.uk, call: (01293) 447357 or visit: www.stch.org.uk. Beach themed beauties step out for St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk
S
ummer hit Horsham Park on Saturday 2nd July when nearly 400 beach themed beauties walked through the night in aid of local hospice, St Catherine’s. This was the ninth ladies-only Midnight Walk, which put the ‘fun’ into fundraising with coloured jellyfish, palm trees and deckchairs surrounding the marquee, a warm-up by international fitness presenter and fitness model, Jo Cooper and a photo booth to capture the atmosphere. Walkers were also spurred on by inspiring speeches from St Catherine’s night nurses and walker Lisa Jarvis who took part in memory of her mum, Rita. Donning beach-themed attire including hula hula skirts, lei’s, armbands and rubber rings, walkers entered into the summer spirit as they took on 7 or 13 miles and, for the most ambitious, a 20-mile walking route. The ladies were rewarded for their fantastic efforts with a celebratory breakfast and medal at the finish line. Among the walkers were Megan, Joanne and Rebecca from Crawley. Megan said, “It’s my first Midnight Walk and I’m walking 20 miles in memory of my uncle.” Joanne added, “I work in an assisted living care home and have friends who’ve got cancer or had cancer so I understand the importance of the work the hospice does.” Friends Sarah Clapp and Claire Treen from Crawley were also taking part. Taking on the 13-mile route, Sarah said, “Six years ago my mum was cared for at home by St Catherine’s. It’s the second year I’ve taken part and I do it in memory of my mum and for the fantastic work the hospice does for everyone. St Catherine’s always organises their events well and makes them fun and, for me, it doesn’t matter what time I walk it in, it’s just about doing it.”
Claire added, “I’ve had cancer but I’m a survivor. I feel blessed to have come out on the other side. I’ve seen what St Catherine’s does to support other people so I’m walking despite having a knee operation just eight weeks ago.” Each year St Catherine’s needs to raise £6 million in voluntary donations to provide their free care to local people facing a terminal illness, and their families and friends. Sponsorship raised from the Midnight Walk will go a long way towards reaching that total with the walk predicted to raise an amazing £80,000 for the hospice. Louise Brown, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said, “Seeing so many women ditch their beauty sleep to walk throughout the night was truly inspiring. Each and everyone of them did us proud and we’re so grateful for their support. Their amazing efforts will make a real difference to all those we care for and I’d also like to thank the 100 brilliant volunteers who gave up their sleep to help cheer our walkers on. We couldn’t be there to provide our vital care without them!” This year’s walk was sponsored by Assurity Consulting, who also provided the photo booth while some staff even took part in the walk. Suzanne Clarkson-Lewis, Marketing Manager at Assurity Consulting, said, “As a growing organisation we were delighted to support such a wonderful cause within our community. The team at St Catherine’s put a great deal of energy and effort into all their events.” If you would like to find out how you can take part in future events for St Catherine’s please visit: www.stch.org.uk, email: events@stch.org.uk or call the Fundraising Team on (01293) 447361. asps… The very word tends to cause an involuntary shudder in most people. Unlike bees, you won’t see any charities asking you to do your bit to save them. Most species don’t pollinate plants and many of us have been stung by a wasp at one point, so it’s easy to dismiss them as just a pointless nuisance. And yet, dig a little deeper and they’re actually quite fascinating creatures. 10 things you might not know about wasps: • There are thousands of different species of wasps, from the Common Wasp that targets our summer picnics, to the more unusual RubyTailed Wasp. • The Asian Giant Hornet can reach 5cm in length. (Imagine one of those attacking your jam sandwich.) • While some live in colonies, just like bees, other species are solitary, and rather anti-social. • They’re predatory. The adult female of some species will actually lay its eggs on the larvae of another insect, or inside an adult insect. Once hatched, the wasp larvae will eat its host. • The adult wasp captures and paralyses insects to feed to its growing larvae. • While the above sounds rather unpleasant, it does have its advantages for humans, as wasps can help to control many of the insects that plague our crops. Some farmers actively encourage wasps for this
reason. In Brazil, for example, sugarcane farmers buy parasitic wasps in order to kill a particular moth known as the Sugarcane Borer. • While we think of wasps as yellow and black, they do come in other colours, including red, blue and green, and pure black. • Social wasps make their nests by chewing up bits of wood and making a substance with it that’s very similar to paper. • Up to 10,000 wasps can live in one nest. • An old wasp nest won’t be used by a new queen, so they’re usually only inhabited for one year. Fascinating though they may be, most of us would still rather not have a wasp nest in our house or garden. You can get insecticides to try to kill the wasps yourself, but it’s rather more sensible to call in the experts. Many local community magazines carry ads from Pest Control companies. Or you can search online. If you’d rather not kill the wasps, there are humane ways to move the nest or encourage them to vacate it, but they’re not foolproof and you will need to take precautions to avoid getting stung. Before doing anything, do make sure that they are wasps, rather than bees. A bee colony is usually safe to leave where it is, but if you want it moved, your local beekeeping association should be able to help. Kate Duggan

New exhibition: ‘Going With the Grain’
F
or over 4,000 years the people of Britain have used wood to create a vast range of everyday objects ranging in scale, from houses to toothpicks. The ability of wood to be mastered by craftsmen into objects that have no bearing to the material shows how amazing both the wood and the craftsmen are – yet we often take it for granted. Until, that is, outstanding craftsmen showcase their talents in exhibitions such as the new craft gallery display at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum. At the museum’s new exhibition Going With the Grain, now open, visitors can appreciate some stunning pieces in wood. Through the skills of three craftsmen, the grainy contrasting patterns usually hidden by the tree are exposed in all their magnificence. Living material is transformed into sensual, exotic bowls, multi-layered strata like layers morph into curvaceous organic formed wall hangings, and furniture celebrates rather than hides the fascinating grain. Horsham Museum itself is a unique monument to wood, and as such provides a visually rich backdrop
to an exhibition of the same material. Visit this exhibition, and be astounded at the complex and intricate patterns of the bowls or sculptural designs by John Plater, who uses so-called defects such as burrs, whorls and staining to great effect. Be transfixed by the work of Paul Baden who creates wooden lattice structures or figurines, by expertly layering different woods to create patterns like contours on a map. And be inspired by Colin Norgate’s fabulous furniture and household pieces – as decorative as they are functional, each piece is individually crafted to perfection using traditional methods. That old idiom, ‘Can’t see the wood for the trees’ might indeed be ‘turned’ on its head – looking at the work exhibited in this exhibition, we might say that we ‘can no longer see the trees for the perfection of the wood’. The exhibition Going With the Grain opened on 22nd July and runs until 9th September. Horsham Museum is open MondaySaturday 10am-5pm, admission free. Year 11 Weald students celebrate in style
Y
ear 11 Weald School students marked another successful year by celebrating at their annual leavers’ prom on Friday 1st July by cruising down the River Thames. The students looked amazing in their finery as they arrived in a variety of vehicles ranging from limousines to camper vans. They then embarked on their coaches for the journey up to London passing the many historical sites before being dropped off at Westminster Pier. On the boat the students were greeted with a complimentary non-alcoholic punch and buffet, followed by a disco where they danced the night away until the
early hours. As always, they were a credit to the school. The boat crew complimented staff on how well all the students behaved while showing they still knew how to have a good time. Staff kept students entertained throughout the evening with their embarrassing dancing. Mr Tim Peck, Key Stage 4 Director of Learning commented, “The Prom is a time for celebration and this year is no exception. The students have all worked hard and should be praised for their efforts and deserve to have some fun to celebrate.”

his year The Weald Sixth Form Year 13 Graduation Dinner was held at the Hilton Avisford Park Hotel on Friday 1st July. With over 120 students and 30 staff in attendance, it was a night to remember! Students arrived in style and looked stunning in their glamorous outfits and were excited about taking the opportunity to celebrate the hard work over the past year. In keeping with tradition, the students themselves organised the evening arranging arrival drinks, a three-course dinner, a professional photographer, a DJ and dancing to keep them entertained until the early hours. There were speeches from our outgoing lead prefects, reflecting on their time in the sixth form with humour, nostalgia and

very fond memories. With many students heading off to university or into the workplace in September, the Head of Sixth Form, Mr Backshall, took the opportunity to wish the students well for the future: “It has been wonderful to have the opportunity to celebrate the students’ time with us and to look back on the memories they have all shared. The Sixth Form team and I are all very proud of what they have achieved and have no doubt they all have very exciting and successful futures ahead of them.” Izzy Lewis, Communications Manager

Book reviews
A Good Read August’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby That Summer in Ischia – Penny Fenny Ischia: an Italian island in the bay of Naples. When Liddy receives a phone call from her best friend, Helena, inviting her to spend the summer there as an au pair to a wealthy family, she can hardly resist. Helena assures her that the children will be no bother and they can spend two months sunbathing on the beach. Only it doesn’t turn out that way. When one of their young charges goes missing they immediately fall under suspicion and after that summer they never see each other again. 25 years later Liddy, back in England, is walking her dog on the beach when she sees a young woman who looks like Helena. But it can’t be. It turns out to be Allie, her old best friend’s 23-year-old daughter. As she befriends her, the mysteries surrounding the events of that long ago summer in Ischia start to unravel. Her mother never talked much about that summer so Allie travels to Ischia to find out for herself. The action switches between location and time periods as Fenny unveils the events that changed so many lives. Her descriptions of Ischia are truly magical, evoking a carefree exotic lifestyle, and contrast with the clear descriptions of the author’s native Liverpool. A great read. Which Witch? – Eva Ibbotson Eva Ibbotson is an award winning children’s
author, but her novels are not as well known by adults. Born in Austria she fled to England under the Nazi regime and this has had an impact on some of her novels, many of which use Austria as a backdrop. However, Which Witch? is clearly rooted in the English countryside and is a fantastical novel for readers aged 9-11. As the story begins we learn of the darkest wizard in the country. Arriman the Awful lives near the village of Todcaster and spends his days performing dark magic. Over the years he has grown tired of this and is delighted to receive a prophecy that a much darker wizard will appear and take over his role. However, when no one appears he decides that there is only one thing for it: he must take a wife and have a child who will take over from him. So he calls together the seven witches of Todcaster and holds a contest to find the darkest witch. And what a bunch of women they are! Here Ibbotson’s writing has a touch of Roald Dahl as she describes the horrible nature of them. All except one: Belladonna. The only problem is that Belladonna is a white witch who is only able to do good magic and Arriman is looking for a dark witch. With a bit of help from an earthworm, Belladonna sets out to win, but ends up proving that good magic can triumph as the true heir appears.
Memories of an Ancient Cameron Highlander A new booklet by Peter Laughton of Petworth, donations in aid of Macmillan Retired Petworth resident Peter Laughton has just published his memories of his time in the army, specifically the famous Scottish Cameron Highlanders regiment. The tales he relates are sometimes funny, sometimes more serious, but all are true. Leaving school at 18 Peter enlisted in the Hampshire Regiment but his sights were always on gaining a commission in his father’s regiment, the Cameron Highlanders. He achieved his ambition, served during the war and in 1951 received the Freedom of Inverness – the photo shows him during the ceremony with the Queen Mother. Now wheelchair-bound, Peter is far from down-hearted and he and his wife are visited weekly by their children. With spare time on his hands, Peter decided he wanted to help others – Macmillan of Midhurst will receive proceeds from the sales of the book. Memories of an Ancient Cameron Highlander will be available in all local villages, including Billingshurst during August for a suggested donation of £5. Thank you.

Horsham Dinosaurs: Stars of film, theme park and academia
S
ome 176 years ago, a keen amateur dinosaur hunter looking over lumps of stone waiting to be cut to build a new chapel for Horsham, saw a dark mass among greyish brown rock. Little did George Bax Holmes realise that this discovery would catapult him in to the world of The Great Exhibition of 1851 and Central Park, New York, or inspire video artist Toby Tatum 170 years later. 30 years ago a keen amateur fossil hunter looked at a mass of grey clay and saw lumps of dark stone: Sylvia Standing rescued the material before it was to be made into bricks. And, little did she realise that after 30 years of research the world’s leading dinosaur artist John Sibbick would recreate from those few fragments Horshamosaurus Rudgwickensis – a dinosaur named after her home town and that of George Bax Holmes. Both fascinating stories and resultant art work along with fossils remains are told and featured in the new temporary exhibition Dinosaurs of Horsham – Art, Reality and Fun at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum from 9th July. Horsham, a town that has an ancient seabed as its roofing material, is built on dinosaurs, for Horsham stone and clay are rich in fossil remains. For centuries these fossils were thrown away and discarded. However, the dying days of the Georgian period and the early days of Queen Victoria’s reign led to discoveries and understanding of what these lumps of dark stone actually were and in turn led to ‘dino-mania’. In Horsham, respected Quaker George Bax Holmes became interested in such fossils and geology. Around 1837 he seems to have collected his first fossil, then three years later he found further remains among the building material for a new chapel in the town: it became known as the Great Horsham Iguanodon. Thanks to the loan by Brighton & Hove City Council’s Booth museum, Horsham museum will be able to display some of these amazing fossils. The size of them, along with a misunderstanding of scale meant that the remains became the model for a replica that stunned the world: it was unveiled at the world’s first theme park, Crystal Palace, after the Great
Exhibition, then later Sydenham park, where it still stands today. In the early 1980s, Horsham museum volunteer Sylvia Standing led a small group to Rudgwick to rescue some fossils found in brick clay. The remains caught the eye of polymath Dr William Blows, who, in his spare time has spent years researching dinosaurs called Polacanthus. The fossils found at Rudgwick looked similar, but were different, and after further research they were named a new species: Horshamosaurus. In the Victorian era, they transformed fossils into 3D sculptures; for Horshamosaurus, the Friends of Horsham Museum have commissioned the world’s leading dinosaur artist, John Sibbick, to re-create the dinosaur so that we can see what it looked like. As well as displaying remains, the exhibition Dinosaurs of Horsham also showcases the work of Reading born video artist Toby Tatum, who has produced a short film: Monsters. It features Horsham’s Iguanodon along with the other dinosaur sculptures in the park. Toby has exhibited the film around the world at various film festivals and now thanks to the support of Toovey’s Fine Art Valuers and Auctioneers the Museum is delighted to be able to show it in Horsham. It is the first time that video art has been shown in the museum and adds a different dimension to what will be an amazing multi-layered exhibition which tells the story of dinosaur discoveries and artistic interpretations. Dinosaurs of Horsham – Art, Reality and Fun opened on 9th July and runs until 5th September. The exhibition is multi-layered with elements that will appeal to all those interested in dinosaurs, art, scientific history, Victorian skulduggery and a lot more besides. This amazing exhibition would not have been possible without the support of the Washington based auctioneers and valuers, Toovey’s. Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am5pm, admission free. At the annual Sussex Macmillan Volunteer Rally, held at Cowdrey Park this month, two of the remaining amazing individuals received recognition of their work by being shortlisted for the Douglas Macmillan Appeal. Jenny Kern and Pam Goldsmith both received a certificate and wine for this nomination and also the acknowledgement for the years of service for starting the Billingshurst group and steering it to the huge contribution given each year to the Midhurst Cancer Support Service. There are now eighteen active committee members and Jenny and Pam are both standing down from their positions of Chair and Treasurer

They will be missed. However, it does not end here as each year MacMillan makes an award to the most successful committees in the country. For the London and South East area, within the top five, were three committees from West Sussex and it was the Billingshurst committee which came out on the top. Delighted to be one of Chairman’s chosen charities
T
he Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity in Five Oaks, which helps families to maximise potential for under-fives with cerebral palsy and other motor learning difficulties, was extremely happy to hear that Cllr Christian Mitchell, newly elected Chairman of Horsham District Council, has chosen the charity as one of three charities to support during his term of office from May this year. Cllr Mitchell was invited to the charity in June, where he was able to spend time observing a group of two- to threeyear-olds and their parents enjoying their play, exercises, games and songs. Cllr Mitchell said, “I am delighted to be able to support the vital service of the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity having seen the work they do which is truly inspirational. I met some of the staff today and experienced their passion to, and commitment for, what they do. “I also met some parents and observed them and their children participating in one of the charity’s early intervention sessions and heard how enormously grateful they are for the service that they are receiving. “I recognise that Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity, like so many other small charities, is facing
challenges in this difficult economic climate, and during my chairmanship, I will do everything I can for this valuable and unique service.” Pilar Cloud, the charity’s Executive Manager, who was delighted to show Cllr Mitchell around said, “We are proud and pleased to have been chosen as one of the Horsham District Council Chairman’s charities of the year for the next year. It was a pleasure to meet the Chairman, Christian Mitchell, today and to have the opportunity to show off our outstanding service to him. “It is truly wonderful to have this very local recognition and to have such an enthusiastic and genuine supporter in Cllr Mitchell. I look forward to working with him to broaden our local business support, particularly as we look towards an exciting new phase of development for the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity.” Heather Pepper, Horsham District Council Photo: Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity’s Executive Manager Pilar Cloud with Councillor Christian Mitchell

If music be the food… John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
I
have a confession to make and also a request. First… the confession. I am an old, silver headed groupie. For umpteen years I have, once or twice a week, visited the many pubs in our area to enjoy the great entertainment of live music. We are so fortunate in that there are so many talented musicians in our towns and villages who give so much of their time and energies into livening up our evenings throughout the year. The music they produce is of all persuasions, from heavy rock for the young, through country and jazz for perhaps the more discerning, and rhythm and blues for the traditional. I fall into this last group, although much of the music produced by the others can still get my foot tapping and the tune lingering in my mind for a long time after. I did say I was a groupie, and in my case the recipient is for the music of the marvellously talented Willie Austen. Willie has been entertaining in the pubs, clubs and village halls of our area since he was a teenager, when he walked from his home in Kirdford to Wisborough Green for his first gig, and he would be the first to confess that that was a long time ago. For larger venues, private functions and parties he has his full band, but many times a week he can be found at some venue in the county with his faithful twelve-string guitar and accompanied by one of the best young lead guitarists around in the shape of Paul Stenton. For many years Willie was partnered by perhaps the greatest session guitarist this country has ever had: Big Jim Sullivan. Big Jim was the lead in a great many of the hit records made in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. In fact he was the backing player on over 1,000 records that made the hit parade during that period and it speaks volumes for Willie’s talents that they played together for so long, much to the enjoyment of

all of us who were lucky enough to have attended those evenings. For a long time Jim and his wife Norma arranged great musical evenings at the Coolham Village Hall where Jim’s much renowned name attract musicians from the wider world to come and play to us fortunate yokels. Sadly Jim died in October 2012. Anyone who attended his funeral, or the commemorative concert that Willie arranged in Petworth will, I’m sure, remember the fantastic performances given by so many musicians in his memory and honour. His widow Norma still arranges wonderful musical evenings, with superb performers, at the Billingshurst Centre and I would ask you all to support the tremendous efforts she makes to keep such entertainment alive and available to us all locally. Willie’s family are all following where the ‘old man’ still leads. His daughter Charlie has the most caressing of voices and plays a mean acoustic guitar, this year she is on the stage at Glastonbury. Ollie is a lead guitar and vocals of high talent as well, appearing recently on stage at the BBC’s Big Weekend with Sigma, Paloma Faith and Take a That, and Jimmie often accompanies Willie on rhythm guitar just to round off a trio of amazing skills. So, dear reader, my request… please, please, just now and then, get off that chair and visit one of the many venues around our area that open their doors to so many talented performers. Check your local paper for gigs that play your sort of music, gird your loins, and venture forth. Once you get there, lubricate those vocal chords, start the toes tapping, and for a couple of hours let the music take your cares away. These musicians need you, and the landlords who offer their venues need you, so let’s keep the traditions of local talent and local venues going. You never know.....in some places you can even sit down… if you really must! John Nash Photo: Paul Stenton and Willie Austen

Quadcopters!
Q
uadcopters, or drones as they’re also called, are similar to radio-controlled helicopters, but have four rotary blades. They’re a lot of fun to fly, but there’s more to quadcopters than just a zoom around the park. Many of them come with inbuilt video cameras, or the ability to attach a camera, so you can film a bird’s eye view of the area they’re flying over. With a quadcopter, you could take aerial shots of your village, check out places that are inaccessible by road or foot, and capture some of the beauty of flying over a lake or fields. Quadcopters can also be used for practical purposes, such as checking whether there are any loose tiles on your roof though you should always be careful where you fly your quadcopter — your neighbours won’t appreciate you taking shots of them sunbathing in their garden! Some quadcopters are primarily designed for outdoor use, some indoor, and some are multi-purpose. Although prices start at around £30 you do get what you pay for. The camera quality on the cheaper models is pretty poor. They’re also usually smaller, harder to fly, susceptible to wind and have a lower range, so can’t go as high or far. Conversely, a high-end quadcopter with a professional high definition video camera can set you back more than £3,000. Thankfully between these extremes there wil be one to suit your pocket. Drone racing is becoming increasingly popular, with
events held around the UK, and you can buy kits to make and customise your own quadcopter. These are often flown by pilots wearing special goggles linked to an onboard video camera giving a view as if sitting in the cockpit. This FPV (First Person View) experience is a very exciting one. If you’re looking to use a quadcopter for commercial purposes, you will need to register it with the Civil Aviation Authority, and undertake a training course to get a Permission for Aerial Work. You’ll also likely need to get public liability insurance. If you just want one for fun, the Parrot MiniDrone Rolling Spider is a good beginner’s model. Priced at around £50, it has large detachable wheels, so you can manoeuvre it along the ceiling and up and down walls, as well as in the air. The wheels also protect the blades when it crashes (which it will). You control it using your smartphone and it’ll do tricks such as 360° flips. I’ve never had much luck flying radio controlled helicopters, but find this quadcopter surprisingly responsive for the price. Outdoors you can get speeds of up to 11mph and a height of 20 metres. It is very small and light, so the camera isn’t the best, and you’ll want a spare battery as each charge only lasts a few minutes, but all in all it’s a good entry model. Even if you just buy a small, cheaper quadcopter for personal use only, there are some restrictions on flying it, so do visit www.quadcopters.co.uk for more information. Kate Duggan

Herbs for Horses
T
he benefits of feeding herbs to horses have been known for hundreds of years and, given the chance, horses will self-select herbs growing in their pasture. Herbs have gained popularity with modern horse owners seeking to feed a natural and healthy diet to their equine and to support various health issues. Herbs in no way replace veterinary treatment but they can help support the horse during recovery and can have very beneficial properties when managing conditions such as sweet itch and arthritis. There are vets that specialise in herbal and homeopathic medicine and traditional vets tend to be open minded to owners using homeopathy and herbs to support traditional medicine, especially longstanding conditions. This article covers some of the more common herbs and their uses… Garlic. Probably the most well known of herbs fed to horses. Garlic is rich in bio available sulphur and has been used as a traditional remedy for the immune system for hundreds of years; it is also thought to have insect repellent properties. Garlic is also rich in antioxidants and vitamin C making it a good addition to the diet in winter to help support the respiratory system. It can be fed in granule, powder or shredded form or you can add a couple of cloves of raw garlic to your horse’s daily feed. Nettles. The common stinging nettle is a wonderful herb in its own right. Growing in abundance now they can be cut, left to wilt and then dried out, chopped and added to feed at a rate of 40-50g per day. Alternatively they can be bought in dried form. Nettles are rich in iron, calcium and vitamins B, C and K. Traditionally used to help cleanse the blood and increase circulation, nettles can help support horses suffering with arthritis and laminitis. They may also be helpful for horses with sweet itch too. Arnica. A traditional remedy for bruises, sprains and strains. Arnica gel can be applied to the area of the injury and Arnica tablets can be given orally, just slip them in a piece of apple and feed from the hand. Witch hazel and Arnica solution makes an excellent body wash for horses (and riders!) after a hard day’s work. Dandelions. Another herb that grows in abundance on spring pasture, dandelions are rich in potassium, calcium and iron. They have a mild laxative effect and have been used to help aid recovery from liver and
kidney complaints. Feed fresh dandelions for the best effect. Rosehips. Used for joint health and mobility, rosehips are full of powerful antioxidants and vitamin C. They can be fed dried and lightly crushed to aid digestion or added to the feed in syrup form. There have been scientific studies showing rosehips to be beneficial to joint health. Rosehip also supports hoof growth and strength. Echinacea. Well known on the human market for its role in supporting the immune system, with research to show that it helps support the health of red blood cells, this makes it an incredibly useful herb to feed in times of challenge such as viral infections. It would also make a good addition to the feed for elderly horses. Mint. With its wonderful aroma, mint is a useful herb to add to feed to tempt fussy feeders to eat. It’s also great for disguising medication such as antibiotics that need to be added to the horse’s feed. Mint is also soothing on the digestive system and can help settle flatulence and reduce bloating. Feed mint dried and chopped. Chaste tree berry. Also known as Agnus Castus, this herb supports the hormonal system and is especially useful for mares that may be difficult when in season and even difficult ‘riggy’ geldings. It helps keep the hormones in balance and can soothe the reproductive organs. It has also been shown to have a positive effect in supporting the pituitary gland making it a good addition to the diet of horses suffering from Cushings disease. Turmeric. This spice has become very popular with horse owners, it is thought to have a beneficial effect on soundness and is often added to the feed of older horses to aid joint mobility. Some believe it has a good effect on skin health too. There are many more herbs on the market and it’s fascinating to research them so if you get a few minutes do read up some info. Some you can pick yourself, but if unsure ask a plant expert to check it out for you before you feed it. Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Funky Foliage
W
e all love flowers. They’re what gardening is all about and the fact that they tend to be relatively shortlived makes them special. But a garden can’t survive on flowers alone. It needs to look attractive all year round. This is where friendly foliage plants come in to their own. Many non-evergreen plants have beautiful showy foliage between April and November and we’d be mad not to take full advantage of it. Rodgersia pinnata is an excellent example. It has huge, attractive bronze, leathery leaves which are almost sculptural in appearance. As a bonus it sends up feathery cream flowers in the summer. It likes soil which doesn’t dry out. A pebble mulch works brilliantly because it complements the plant. Hostas have truly beautiful leaves but I’ve tried and failed with them on many occasions because my garden is home to a race of super-slugs who seem able eat hostas faster than I can plant them! I’ve had some success with the variety ‘Frances Williams’ which is less prone to attack though I still need to go on slug patrol every evening! Hostas like a moist soil so if yours is on the dry side work in plenty of compost or manure at planting time and mulch well… preferably with something sharp to act as a deterrent to the slimy brigade.
I have had tremendous success with ferns. They are the most useful plant for shade. My favourite is the ostrich-plume fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris (see photo). Plant them under trees and shrubs and watch the stunning lime-green foliage unfold each spring. A few years ago I had a wonderful purple New Zealand flax, Phormium tenax. Its bold, dramatic fountains of spiky foliage made it a firm favourite. Unfortunately it succumbed to an extended period of sub-zero temperatures one winter. I keep meaning to try again. When I do I will but the much hardier green variety… just in case. Many people forget grasses when they think about foliage but there are some wonderfully attractive varieties. Try Miscanthus sinensis ‘Zebrinus’. The leaves look like green ribbons, striped with yellow and reach chest height. Cut it down to ground level each February. Finally, if you have the space, for real in-yourface foliage try the golden-leaved Catalpa bignonioides ‘Aurea’. Grow it as a large bush. Prune each stem back to a sprouting bud around knee-height each spring and mulch with manure at the same time. It will reward you with leaves as big as Frisbees! Now that’s really funky foliage. Choir is ‘Commended’ in Horsham platform!
O
n 24th June, for the first time in the choir’s fiveyear history, The North Singers took part in the Horsham Performers Platform which is affiliated to The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech. This is an annual event and this year, for the first time, included a category for choirs. Under their Music Director, Jon Openshaw and Accompanist, Rosemary Hensor The North Singers joined three other choirs taking part. Although this is not a competition, the event categories are judged by professional judges. Each choir performed three
pieces. After very helpful comments by the judge, The North Singers were presented with a Certificate of Commendation scoring 84-86, for technical and artistic performance. Members of the choir thoroughly enjoyed the experience and all wished to take part next year. Chairman, Jean Spira said, “I feel very proud of the choir. It has come along way in the last five years. We are a small but happy choir and are always looking for new members to come and join us.” Congratulations to all concerned! Another successful Loxwood Village Fête
A
gain this year the Loxwood Fête Committee organised another very successful Fête and Fun Dog Show for the village on 11th June at Loxwood’s North Hall. We were very fortunate that the sun shone for the whole day which enticed around 800 people out of their homes to support the event. Overall the fête was a massive success in terms of money raising as well as a very good entertaining day out. Approximately £5,000 was raised for local causes such as both Loxwood and Alfold churches, North Hall and various other village organisations. There were many events taking place to attract families, barbecue, bar, beer slide, side shows, craft stands, cake stall, face painting, tombola, china smash, vintage clothing, World War One exhibition as well as a very successful Grand Draw. With families in mind, the organisers arranged for a free bouncy castle, slide and Punch and Judy show for the children, as well as a good selection of children’s races in the arena. We were entertained all afternoon by The Weald school organising and running the public address where they made announcements and played a good selection of music. They did a terrific job. In between, the crowd were entertained by the
Slinfold Concert Band, The North Singers as well as The Loxwood School Choir. The organisers of the fête would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody for their support for this annual event which benefits all the people in Loxwood, especially our sponsors The Harwood Group, Surrey and Sussex Tree Surgery, Peter Hallt, The Loxwood Joust, MW Hedges, Firebird Brewing, Lady Penelope Gardening Services, John Murray, Just Hair, Oscar Pet Foods, The Sir Roger Tichborne, The Onslow Arms and Freeman Brothers for the printing of the programmes. We would also like to thank all of our advertisers who advertised in the programme as well as people and companies who donated to the Grand Draw and to the tombola. Lastly, a big thank you to all of the organisers, helpers and contributers who helped to make the day a resounding success. This includes people such as The Billingshurst Lions who organised the car-parking for us, Mo Pearmain who did a fantastic job organising the Fun Dog Show and many others too numerous to mention. Amy’s Allotment Adventures
M
y name is Amy Edgar. I am proud to be part of the community in Billingshurst. I attended to The Weald school and left earlier this year. I keep an allotment and I love it! A lady I met at the allotment suggested I write an occasional blog for Village Tweet. I already keep a weekly diary of all the things I’ve done at the allotment. So here goes! There is such a community feel here in the allotment. I meet so many different people and have named the allotment ‘the mixed bunch allotment group’. I’m a ‘people person’ so enjoy meeting people. The people here are very diverse. Some have had an allotment for years, others are beginners, and many are of course between these extremes. We share tips, give each other new ideas and hear about any news. And we help each other out… For example, I recently had problems with some of my crop breaking. Someone kindly showed me a great idea of using cuttings from a pair of tights to loosely tie the plant to a pole. Another lady has let me use her watering can in
on occasions when I have forgotten mine. A kind man has given me some of his leftover strawberry plants to add to my crop. Ah, yes. Crops. Most of my crop I’ve started from seedlings. However, I bought a few plants from the charity shop – lettuce, cucumber and sprouts – and these are coming on really well. Other crops this year include onions, courgettes, carrots, broccoli, cucumber and aubergines. Hopefully some more things too. Last year I had great success with my kurly kale and was able to give lots to others, including The Limeburners pub – it went onto the menu that evening! The allotment group sometimes puts on events, from a ‘mass clear up’ to community barbecues. So it’s a lot more than just planting, growing and picking. It’s become a real hobby of mine to plant the crops, see them grow but above all, for me at least, to socialise. If you see me out and about in Billingshurst please feel free to ask how my allotment is coming along. Maybe I can give you some tips! Amy Edgar

Hip dysplasia in dogs
T
he term hip dysplasia is something that no dog owner wants to hear. However, with the advances in veterinary medicine, there are various options that help you provide appropriate care for your dog, enabling them to live a comfortable life. Hip dysplasia is a skeletal disease which occurs in the hip joints. Essentially the hip joints don’t quite develop as they should, therefore allowing them to sub luxate (partially dislocate). It is thought to be a genetic condition that is commonly seen in breeds that are predisposed to the condition, such as Great Danes, German Shepherds to name but two. However, there is evidence to suggest that environmental factors such as obesity and dietary factors may contribute to the condition. The rate of which your dog grows as well as their exercise regime will also influence the chances of developing hip dysplasia as well as the severity of the condition. Initial signs and symptoms are similar to arthritis. It is common to see painful joints, difficulties with movement as well as a general stiffness, particularly in the hind-quarters. Other signs may include: • Weakness in one or both hind limbs,
• Pain in pelvic region, • Behavioural changes, • Exercise intolerance, • Muscle wastage in the hindquarters. Early recognition of the symptoms is key, therefore it is important to book a consultation with your vet to discuss treatment. Unfortunately there is no way to prevent hip dysplasia although, fortunately, there are now quite a few ways to manage the condition ensuring a good quality of life for your dog. Dogs that have been diagnosed with this condition will benefit from physiotherapy while massages and a passive range of movement exercises can help to increase your dog’s mobility. These exercises will help to build and restore lost muscle tone in the hindquarters as well as assist with pain management. Remember it is essential to diagnose and treat hip dysplasia as early as possible. Hip dysplasia is a degenerative disease of the joints that will only deteriorate the longer it is left. An Invitation to Billingshurst Dramatic Society’s Summer Play Readings
E
ver wondered how the Billingshurst Dramatic Society choose what play to put on next? Sometimes a director has a clear idea of what we should perform; sometimes another member has a great idea for a production and a director is found. But often we discover a hidden gem or two at our informal, social gatheringstyle Play Readings held throughout the summer. While there is not a specicifc play to be rehearsed, these are great fun meetings, where anyone can have a try at characters they’d never have thought about playing onstage. This summer we are particularly keen to find a good piece, as our last couple of plays have been great to get our teeth into, especially Lillies on the Land, and we would like to continue that run. We’d love to see some new faces too. Even if
you have no intention of treading the boards and just like to read aloud, it’s great to have some fresh input. We are holding the meetings in venues around the village (we were at the tennis club in May!) and we welcome anyone to come along (all free!), including the lesser spotted director or techy! Readings will take place on 4th, 15th, 22nd and 25th August. The first two are at venues undecided at the time of going to press (email me at the address below), the last two will be at our usual performance venue, The Women’s Hall, Billingshurst. All are at 8pm. Rebecca Thurston Email: bexcoop@hotmail.com Billingshurst Dramatic Society’s Lillies on the Land was a huge success. Photo by Graeme McAlpine:

Billingshurst Show and a New Recruit
A
t the end of June, the crew at Billingshurst Fire Station once again made an appearance at the annual Billingshurst Carnival Procession and Show. We love to attend these type of events. They give us an opportunity to interact with the public giving them fire safety advice, which is what the Fire Service is all about. It’s also a chance to let the children look around the fire engine! If you are organising an event please don’t be afraid to ask us to attend as we will always do our best to come and say hello though we cannot guarantee we can stay for the whole event… our appearance at the Billingshurst Show was cut short for the crew as they were called to an incident where smoke was spotted issuing from a property near Kirdford. Luckily for everyone involved it was only some burnt toast but, as ever, it’s a case of being better
safe than sorry. This month I would like to welcome Ben Marshall to the team at Billingshurst. Unusually for a recruit, Ben is already an experienced fire fighter who started his career in Essex, where he was a retained fire fighter before joining Gatwick Fire Service in a full-time position. He will be a great benefit to our team bringing experience and knowledge from other services. Ben lives in the village with his wife and three children and will be on-call on his days off from Gatwick. Welcome again Ben, we hope you’re settling in well. Wisborough Green Village Fête Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August, from 1pm
T
wo hundred years ago, swing boats were so common and so popular at travelling fairs or village fêtes that once they were up and running the shout would go out “The fair is in full swing!” Wisborough Green’s annual village fête is no exception and boasts its very own set of swing boats for the 2,000 or so villagers and visitors who attend the fête every year to raise money for local good causes. The current swing boats first swung into action a quarter of a century ago and were in need of a little repairing and refreshing. So, earlier this year the boats set off for a
‘face-lift’ at the hands of funfair rides restorer Michael Rule whose traditional painting skills have restored them to their former glory. The swing boats will be one of the many attractions at this year’s Wisborough Green Fete on Bank Holiday Monday, 29th August, which includes traditional games and races for all the family, a Fun Dog Show, the Horticultural Show, plus lots of stalls and refreshments. Our current Treasurer has given loyal and excellent service for many years but it is now time for her to step down; which is her wish. She has not enjoyed good health recently and we wish to support her in this decision. This accounting post is not too complicated and we will of course arrange orientation and formal training. Knowledge of computer orientated accounts would be useful. It would involve overseeing General Funds and acting as adviser and assistance to Poppy Appeal Team particularly during Remembrance Period. Non Legion members are welcome to apply. Contact Colin Banks (Branch President/Chairman) on tel: (01403) 784363 or by post: 16 Broomfield Drive, Billingshurst, West Sussex RH14 9TJ
Billingshurst Parish Neighbourhood Plan Work has commenced in earnest on the Billingshurst Parish Neighbourhood Plan. The designated area for the Neighbourhood Plan is the entire parish of Billingshurst which includes Adversane, Coneyhurst, Five Oaks and Newbridge. Representatives from the Parish Council, Billingshurst Community Partnership Limited, Chamber of Commerce, the Weald School and
The Steering Committee recently consulted with members of the public at the Billingshurst Show to help identify the community’s priorities shown here:
Ultimately this is the community’s Plan, not the Parish Council’s. Without the involvement of all our residents, businesses, community groups, landowners, etc, Billingshurst will not have a Neighbourhood Plan.
under pressure. New development should also provide facilities for Billingshurst and the Neighbourhood Plan’s policies could reflect this. It requires your input to ensure that the Plan understands your needs.
We need your help. The Horsham District Planning Framework proposes significant growth in the south of the village. Developments in recent years have not brought improvements in infrastructure needed to support the growth in population. As a result, health, education and community services are
members of the public are working together to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan to say how the parish will change over the next 15 years.
Even if we only get 30 seconds of your time, you will help the Plan create a future for the community of Billingshurst that we can all be proud of! We will be engaging with the community over the coming months so please look out for information on future events or get in touch using the details below.

Our Community Volunteers – Sophie Sawyer
T
he annual Library Reading Challenge, which encourages primary school children to read six books from their local library over the summer holidays, takes place this year from 16th July to 17th September. Last year over 300 children took part in the event at Billingshurst library alone and in order to run it, libraries ask for volunteers aged 14 to 25 to help out. One of this year’s Billingshurst volunteers is 14-year-old Sophie Sawyer, a pupil at The Weald School, who is working towards her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award which requires, among other things, candidates to volunteer for an hour a week over a three-month period. Some of Sophie’s friends who are also working on the Award are volunteering for local Scout and Guide groups, but Sophie said that she knew at once that she wanted to work in the library. An avid reader, she has taken part herself in the Challenge for many years and is a regular visitor to the library all year round. “I would have volunteered for the Reading Challenge this year anyway, but the D of E Award provided the perfect opportunity”. As the stipulated three months is longer than the Challenge itself, she helped out for the four weeks
beforehand preparing displays for the event in Pulborough library, which she says she really enjoyed. During the Challenge itself she has been talking to participants about the books they read, their favourite characters and what they like about the books, as well as awarding stickers and certificates at different stages of the process. In spite of her age, this is not Sophie’s first experience of voluntary work – her mother is a volunteer at Holbrook Animal Rescue in Horsham which cares for a variety of domestic and farm animals and Sophie has helped out there in previous years. Her other interests include dance and playing the clarinet (areas in which she has set herself physical and skillsbased goals for the Award), reading and writing stories. She wrote a novella for her Extended Project Qualification at school, which is about people’s obsession with their phones getting out of hand: “It’s dystopian and futuristic – the kind of thing I enjoy reading!” she smiles.
