Estage agent
Homed:In. Tomorrow’s way to sell your home. Today
J
ames Bush recently launched Homed:In Estate Agents with a view to changing the widely held negative perception of estate agency. With as many as twothirds of property sellers later wishing they had instructed a different agent to the one they actually used… “I knew there was an opportunity for ‘better’. Homed:In represents the future of online estate agency in West Sussex. We do this at just a fraction of the price, too: our pay when sold agency fee is just 0.5%. “We know that disposable income has been falling or stagnating for the majority of us and that real wages have been performing rather badly. Marry that with levels of inflation that we dare not think about and prolonged fears of Brexit, and we begin to see why the housing market has had the wind taken out of it in recent months, with no definite sign of any let up. “Compounding the issue further still, prolific high street casualties have claimed the lives of several of our best-known brands – from BHS to
6
Prezzo, and Matalan to House of Fraser. The world as we know it, it would seem, is moving exclusively online. Estate agents too. Homed:In, then, is a reaction to the all the conditions set out above. We want a resurgent, healthy property market, and we want to serve our customers in a way that is fit for the future. We also think that by offering lower fees, we can achieve this, and go on to become a leading real estate brand. As a ‘hybrid’ agent, sellers enjoy the exact same package as that which is offered by a traditional agent – only for much smaller cost. Accompanied viewings, pay only when sold and expert photography and marketing are all on the agenda when you choose to instruct us. “So next time you’re considering a move, why not ‘walk into our shop’, at www.homedin.co.uk. Or call 01403 597595. We’d be only too happy to oblige. “Have a happy summer!” James Bush Director, Homed:In Ltd

T
he Billingshurst Show was the scene of an epic struggle between the eternal forces of darkness and light as Heroes and Villains came to the show on Sunday 24th June. Large crowds enjoyed the Carnival Procession featuring both the pure of heart and those twisted towards the dark side, followed by a full programme of activities and attractions at the Recreation Ground in Billingshurst. Leading the Carnival Procession were the Petworth Band who later performed in the Arena, followed by Carnival Princess Lily Smith Lily Smith opens the Show with her attendant Florence Leighton, followed by flower girls Chloe HarrisonWoodhouse and Isobel Wallace, and the boys were represented by heroic knight Henry Smith and villainous Darth Vader Albert Wallace. Billingshurst’s very own local hero John Gooderham – lollipop man for hundreds of children at the Primary School – was on duty to judge the winners of the Carnival Procession. He Bat Girl awarded first prize to Wakoos Centre 4 Children, with St Gabriel’s Playgroup second and Dauxwood Preschool third. The procession also featured a colourful display of dragons’ heads, with Rudgwick School creating the winning entry. The second most important event started at 1pm: the England v Panama football match, and fans were treated to live coverage on the field Fishers Farm Park float courtesy of Mike and Graham Russell of Aurac Sound + Vision. In the main arena the crowds were treated to two displays by the amazing Rockwood Dog Display Team, famous for their work on TV and in films, with Martin Winfield providing the commentary. A particular highlight was the dogs showing their skill and courage by negotiating a Rockwood Dogs towering ramp, leaping through four fire squares on the way
across. Billingshurst Scouts & Guides laid on a fun It’s A Knockout tournament, and there was dancing from Horsham Bluebelles and VMA Dance, as well as a first visit from Wisborough Green Primary School who demonstrated their maypole dancing skills. Music was provided throughout the afternoon in the Food Court area by the excellent Emily Cooper and Livi in the Middle. Other attractions included the ever-popular Fun Dog Show, superbly run by Anita and Chester Mark Bridger from Bone Canis, donkey rides, a climbing wall, Punch and Judy, the Great Billingshurst Bake Off, and a wide range of slides, rides and stalls. Paul Starkey from the Billingshurst Show Organising Committee said, “It was another great day and we were delighted with the large turnout. There was plenty for everyone to enjoy, and yet again we had perfect weather for the show. “I’d like to thank our Principal Knight in Shining Armour Sponsors Coco’s Style, Coole Bevis, Fowlers, Gozone, Harwoods and Slinfold Golf & Country Club for their support in helping us stage the show, and to our many other sponsors and supporters. Thanks also to everyone who helped bring the show together on the day and in the days and weeks beforehand when all the planning takes place. Special thanks to John Gooderham Trinity United Reform float for agreeing to judge the Carnival Procession and for doing such a great job, and to Mike and Graham from Aurac for arranging the football coverage. “As well as providing a fun day out for everyone, the show is an important fundraising event, and we’re expecting to have raised up to £10,000 for local Scouts & Guides and Rotary charities. Now we look forward to next year’s show on Dragon Head Sunday 30th June 2019!” Paul Starkey Photos: Paul Starkey

Courgette Gratin METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/Fan 180°C/Gas 6 Place the olive oil in a heavy large, lidded frying pan over a low heat. When hot add the courgettes and herbs and season with salt and pepper. 2. Cover the pan and cook gently for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the courgettes have softened slightly but still have a little bite. Transfer the courgette and herb mixture to an ovenproof dish. 3. Whisk together the crème fraîche, milk and flour in a bowl and season with salt. Pour the resulting mixture over the courgettes. Don’t worry if there is not enough to submerge the courgettes as the mixture will bubble up when cooking. 4. Sprinkle over the Gruyère (Emmental, Beaufort, Jarlsberg or Comté make good substitutes) cheese. Bake in the oven for around 25 minutes, or until brown and bubbling. 5. Serve as a side dish, or as a light supper with crusty bread and a green salad.

Networks Centre becomes a sponsor of Barns Green Half Marathon & 10km races
T
his year’s Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km race on Sunday 30th September, will have a new sponsor, Networks Centre, who join Bluecoat Sports Centre and MoreThan as sponsors of this long standing local event. Networks Centre provides high-quality technology products and services such as copper and fibre cabling. The company is currently based in Broadbridge Heath but is moving to new premises in Ashington over the summer period. Duncan Lindsay, Managing Director of Networks Centre commented, “We are delighted to be getting involved as a sponsor of the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races. We are looking to involve as many of our staff as possible and myself and several of the team are in training and will be taking part in the Half Marathon on the big day”. The Chairman of the Barns Green Half Marathon Committee, Vernon Jennings, commented, “It is wonderful to have Networks Centre supporting our race for the first time. We are extremely proud of what the race has been able to achieve and each year the event gets bigger with more runners, and spectators. Our charity this year is once again, St Catherine’s Hospice. Because of the involvement of our sponsors,
we will be able to allocate even more funds to our chosen charity as well as to the various local and junior organisations, societies and clubs that help organise the event on the day.” This year will be the 36th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the 3rd year of the new 10km race which last year attracted almost 600 runners. The event is organised and run entirely by volunteers and all the money raised goes towards supporting local clubs, sports clubs and societies as well as different charities. Since the event began in 1982, this unique village event has raised a huge amount of money for charity. Healthwatch West Sussex Community Fund
H
ealthwatch West Sussex are excited to announce their Community Fund for local community and voluntary groups with the aim to gather insight into people’s health and social care experiences with a view to influencing future improvements. We invite applications for awards of up to £500. Our aim is to keep the process simple and applying is easy so that we can make awards that make a difference to local people. All applications will be judged on their own merits and in relation to how they could contribute to improving people’s health and wellbeing experiences. We would expect recipients to provide a simple report about their project/activity once completed to include: how many people were involved, how they raised awareness of Healthwatch West Sussex with their members and wider local community: so that we hear the ‘voices of your community health and care needs’. The report could possibly include
photographs of the project, that we could use in our community work. The projects do not have to be expensive or complicated, for example: enough to cover the cost of setting up an event within an existing group, or a new group so that people can meet to share their health and care experiences, or the cost of materials so that a group could produce artwork representing their experiences. No matter what your group is, if you are part of a community in West Sussex, we are keen to hear from you. We will be reviewing applications every month and will reply as soon as we can. Interested groups or individuals just need to send a short description of their project idea, how it fits the criteria of the fund, and the amount of funding they are requesting to cheryl.berry@ healthwatchwestsussex.co.uk or call 07966 529756. www.healthwatchwestsussex.co.uk. Walkers brighten up Horsham for  St Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk
S
t Catherine’s Hospice Midnight Walk hit the streets of Horsham on 9th June. More than 1,000 men, women and children made their steps count by walking 7, 13 or 20 miles under the stars to raise money for local people facing death and bereavement. Sponsored by Gatwick Airport, the event gave people chance to walk in support of their local hospice or in memory of a loved one. Their efforts are set to raise an incredible ÂŁ157,000. The night began at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre with a lively warm up by Clubbercise guru, Jo Cooper, and an energising performance by Horsham Rock Choir. A free photo booth also proved popular with walkers. Following the warmup there were heartfelt speeches from Lesley Hall, Environment Health and Safety Director at Gatwick Airport, and Giles Tomsett, St Catherine’s Chief Executive, who highlighted the importance of each walker’s efforts in helping St Catherine’s be there for everyone when life comes full circle. Lesley said, “The work of St Catherine’s Hospice is close to the heart of many Gatwick Airport staff. I’m delighted to represent Gatwick tonight as my family and I have first hand experience of St Catherine’s care from when they looked after my mother-in-law.â€? With the sun setting, and cheers from volunteer marshals, walkers set off in a sea of orange and neon. As they walked past St John’s Church in Broadbridge Heath, many of them took the chance to light a candle in memory of a loved one.
Among the walkers were a team of nurses from St Catherine’s who walked 20 miles. Susie Mockridge, Deputy Ward Manager at St Catherine’s said, “Every day I see the difference local people raising money makes to terminally ill people at the hardest time. I wanted to do my part to raise money too. It was really moving to see so many people walking in support of our hospice on Saturday and I hope they enjoyed the night as much as I did! For me, the Midnight Walk summed up our community at its very best. Volunteers giving up their time to cheer us on, and walkers coming together to have fun while raising money to support others. It was a fantastic evening! After completing their challenge, walkers crossed the finishing line to cheers from hospice staff and volunteers. They enjoyed breakfast whilst wearing a medal to mark for their incredible feat. Louise Brown, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said, “To see over 1,000 people walking to support the hospice was incredible. We’re so grateful to them and their efforts in raising money will help us care for more local people in the future. I’d like to thank Gatwick Airport and all our volunteers for their support. The night was unforgettable! To find out how you can take part in future challenges for St Catherine’s, please visit www.stch.org.uk. Canal sponsored walk raises over £10,000
S
upporters of the Wey & Arun Canal Trust came together in June for the ‘Poddle”, the charity’s annual sponsored walk. The 12-mile route offered the opportunity to discover the disused Portsmouth & Arundel Canal along with the picturesque River Arun, as well as raise funds for the Trust’s restoration work. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust is working hard to restore 23 miles of navigable waterway linking the River Arun at Pallingham in West Sussex to the River Wey at Shalford in Surrey, and the sponsored walk makes a vital contribution to pushing the restoration effort forward. Some 144 walkers strapped on their boots and set off from Walberton Village Hall in Arundel for the circular route. Along the way participants were not only able to enjoy the Sussex countryside but got a fascinating glimpse of canal structures, including the entrance to the Portsmouth & Arundel Canal at Ford, a buried canal bridge hidden in a residential area and the Hollingworth swing bridge. They were also treated to a traditional tea at the last stop.
The Portsmouth and Arundel Canal was abandoned in 1855 after it failed to be a financial success. It had been part of a larger scheme to allow craft to move from the Thames in London to Portsmouth without having to enter the Channel. It formed the southernmost half of the waterway link of which the Wey & Arun Canal forms the northern route and which the Trust is aiming to restore fully. Wey & Arun Canal Trust chairman Sally Schupke was delighted to report that the Poddle raised more than £10,000 and praised organisers and volunteers for their efforts. She said, “The event brought together members and supporters for a fantastic day out. All those participating enjoyed exploring the walk and discovering more about the story of our lost canals. “I would like to congratulate those who took part and event organiser Margaret Darvill and her team for their incredible dedication and hard work.” Sally Schupke, Chairman, Wey & Arun Canal Trust Photo: Groups of walkers on this year’s Poddle

Wisborough Green Fête & Horticultural Show Bank Holiday Monday, 27th August, from 1pm
W
isborough Green’s popular annual event on the village green village attracts visitors from a wide area and will be jam packed with fantastic games and activities for the whole family this Summer Bank Holiday, 27th August. We’re delighted to welcome back the Black Swan Border Morris this summer. Making a dramatic entrance in the arena at 1.30pm, and entertaining us around the Green during the afternoon, the dancers make a striking impression, resplendent in their black and purple tatter coats made from long rags and their faces obscured by paint. They dance their own interpretation of border morris, which originates from the English-Welsh borders and can be traced back to the 16th century. Beginning at 2pm in the arena, the Fun Dog Show is always a hugely popular event with classes ranging from the Best Veteran to Best Junior Handler. The show will be judged for the third year running by professional show judge and dog breeder, Sue Garner.
Come and join in traditional games and races for all the family. Back by popular demand this year, the ancient art of Wellie Wanging – hilarious, competitive and addictive! Younger visitors can enjoy the delights of hook a duck, traditional swingboat rides, bouncy castles and face painting. For keen gardeners, the horticultural show tent is a must. A glorious celebration of the hard work, ingenuity (and competitiveness!) of enthusiastic local gardeners and cooks alike. After browsing the lovely stalls in the fête market, viewing the vintage vehicles or the ferret racing, trying your luck at the tombola or high striker, what better way to relax than to grab some refreshments and listen to the perennially popular Worthing Silver Band. Apart from being a wonderful, traditional family day out, the Wisborough Green fete has, over the last ten years, raised almost £30,000 for local charities and organisations. t the Billingshurst Show the artist Helena Roden ran a creative arts stall as part of the public art project, ‘Grass, Grains and Garden Lawns’. She said of the day, “I had my first encounter with the people of Billingshurst at the Show on Sunday 24th June, what a friendly reception – thank you. We had some interesting conversations about the local landscape and blackcurrant gleaning. As part of my research to support my sculpture ideas I have been looking at grass; one of our most taken-for-granted but valuable plants.” Visitors to Helena’s stall had a chance to vote for their favourite form of grass – did they prefer a smooth lawn or a wild tussock? The ‘wild’ side won with 22 votes to 10 ‘smooth’, with 4 somewhere in

Three in a Row for The North Singers!
J
une not only brought us beautiful weather but the sun also shone on The North Singers, who for the third year running took part in Horsham Performers Platform and brought home a Commended Certificate scoring between 84-86 for technical and artistic performance. Horsham Performance Platform is affiliated to The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech and this annual event took place in St. Mary’s Church in the Causeway in Horsham. Four choirs took part and, in their section The North Singers, under their Music Director, Jon Openshaw and Accompanist, Rosemary Hensor, sang three pieces: The Water is Wide, an American song about lost love, O Nata Lux, a traditional piece in Latin and the pop song Can’t Take My Eyes off of You. Categories are judged by professional judges and are aimed at giving participants a stage on which to perform and helpful critiques of their performance. Once again, the choir thoroughly enjoyed the
experience and found listening to the other choirs an important part of the whole event. Chairman Jean Spira said, “We are a small happy choir and I would like to thank Jon Openshaw and Rosemary Hensor for all their hard work in bringing us to this standard. Because we are a small group, we are always looking for new members to come and join us. So if you are out there and would like to sing with us, we would love you to join us. You don’t have to have any experience – the experience is in the learning. It is commonly understood now, that singing is very good for your health. Congratulations to all concerned!” The North Singers rehearse every Wednesday evening from 7.30 to 9.15pm at Loxwood Village Hall. For further information contact Jean Spira, Chairman, on (01403) 752534 or go to the website: thenorthsingers.com. Teamwork International
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
S
ara, Anne and Nanny were attending a family reunion in Vancouver. They were having a good time meeting old and new family members. Sara was amazed that she had so much ‘family’ and enjoyed meeting her ‘new’ cousins. After the reunion they enjoyed some shopping and sightseeing. Every evening when they got home from their travels, Anne Skyped the at-home kids to check out on their day – good mum as she is. She would also have a chat with Gary – good partner as she is! One evening, however, Gary told Anne that Magnus was missing and that Grandad was very upset (as Grandad is apt to be). He and Nan had once lost a lovely German Shepherd named Radar in the New Zealand bush. Despite his name, Radar had proved elusive and was never found, so a lost dog was a ‘biggie’ in their life. Gary told Anne NOT to tell Nan as he did not want to spoil her holiday; Magnus had only been missing a few hours after all and Magnus – found would surely turn up. After a short discussion Sara and Anne decided that Nan should know and called her in from the balcony and told her. They got Grandad on the phone and Nan and he talked for a bit. She gave him some ideas of where to search and tried to calm him down with a little prayer to St Anthony. He went off to look for Magnus some more. And Nan carried on reading her book on the balcony and tried not to feel worried. It was unusual for Magnus to take off by himself. She worried that because he was a valuable dog, someone may have dognapped him. Or maybe he’d got himself stuck in the blackberry bushes somewhere. In the meantime, the kids were on the train from Crawley where they had been to the cinema. Anne rang them to tell them to get something to eat on the way back because Grandad who would normally be in charge of their dinner would be out looking for Magnus. He couldn’t even think about preparing their tea; many hours had now passed and he was sick with worry. The kids readily agreed to takeaways – which teen

would not? They were just about to hang up when Mary piped up, “Magnus came with us in the car to the station this morning. He and Brody both came.” “I wonder if they’d looked in the car?” thought Anne and quickly rang Gary who went to look… There, quietly sleeping on the floor where it was coolest was Magnus! He very happily jumped out and had a very long drink. And an even longer wee! Grandad was informed and picked up Magnus for a very long cuddle and a wee weep. Nan was also informed and she went out onto the balcony in Vancouver and had a weep too. She also said a “thank you” prayer. After everyone in Vancouver had had a stiff drink, they analysed what might have happened. Both dogs had got in the car with the kids. Gary knew Brody was there as he always makes sure people know he’s about. Gary did not know Magnus was with them; after all, Magnus had never come in the car with last! Gary. After Gary dropped the kids of at the station, he came home and Brody jumped out – as he always did. Magnus would not have just jumped out without an invitation (some dog school lessons still operated) and as Gary didn’t know he was there Gary shut the door and Magnus was left inside for the day. Fortunately the car was in the shade so he wasn’t too stressed. Having considered the scenario, Anne pointed out to Nan how amazing that the cooperation of everyone had solved the problem even though they were continents apart. She also commended Mary for her deductive abilities. After that drama everyone settled down, some in Vancouver as night stole over the mountains, some on that little farm in Billingshurst as the kids ate their takeaways, and Magnus as he cuddled up to his Dad, totally unaware of the story his escapade would soon to result in! Cricket / About the house
Mid-summer news from Billingshurst Cricket Club
B
illingshurst Cricket Club have reached the halfway stage of the season with all three adult teams progressing well. The first team, who have targeted promotion to top tier of Sussex club cricket, are currently in fourth position in division 2 of the Sussex League and are well placed to put pressure on the sides above them in the weeks ahead. Captain Tom Haynes leads the division’s batting statistics as well the club’s own list of scorers. He has already totalled 300-plus runs averaging well over 50. The second XI, in a competitive fourth division, lie in sixth position with very few points separating the teams around them. Opening bowler Alexander Lowther tops the wicket tally with 15. The side will aim for a top half finish when the campaign finishes in the first week of September. On the back of two successive promotions the third team are once again top of their league! An overwhelmingly young side led this season by James West have lost just one game so far and
continue to provide a valuable introduction to adult cricket for the club’s younger members. The club runs a busy Colts (youth) cricket section and after successful winter nets the season got off to a slow start due to the awful weather. However, under 9s, 11s and 12s enjoyed well attended training sessions and competed in regular weekly competitive fixtures. The team managers strive to provide coaching and a fun environment for youngsters to develop and learn the game and are extremely proud of the progress the children have shown. New Colts are always welcome both for the remainder of this season and on into next year. Potential new players and members are always very welcome and can contact the club at billingshurstcc@gmail.com, Richard on 07887 603458 (by text please), or for the Colts section please contact Clive on cliveheyward@ whsmithnet.co.uk. A Trip to Scarborough
W
ell, what about it? Do you fancy going up to the famous Yorkshire spa town this autumn?
Take a step back in time to 1781 when Scarborough was an elegant Georgian seaside town favoured by the fashionable society of the time. Picture the pompous and vain of society in early summer descending on this spa town for ‘the season’. Among those ‘taking the waters’ is Tom Worthy who has arrived penniless and is hoping to squeeze some money out of his notoriously mean brother, the outrageously camp dandy Lord Foppington. This is the beginning a story about to be told in a joint venture between Billingshurst Dramatic Society and Lights and Bushels Theatre Company. The production will be at Fishers Farm Theatre in October, and utilises a brand new adaptation of the original script by Barry Syder who will also direct. A Trip to Scarborough features larger than life characters whose behaviour is by turns appalling and ridiculous. It follows Tom as he discovers that a marriage has been arranged between his bother and Felicity, the daughter of wealthy local landowner (and borderline psychopath) Sir Tunbelly Clumsy. The nuptials have been arranged by society matchmaker Mrs Coupler, but the couple have never actually met. Can Tom, by pretending to be his brother, steal Felicity and her
fortune for himself? Written in a similar in style to the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan who is best remembered for his comedies The Rivals and A School for Scandal, both of which ruthlessly satirise fashionable society; the plays could be considered as the Blackadder and Fawlty Towers of their day. As in Sheridan’s plays, the comedy in A Day Trip to Scarborough is very much in the characterisation and the plot: the pompous and vain of society receiving their deserved comeuppance. However, modern day audiences can sometimes miss the nuances of that comedy due to the unfamiliar style of eighteenth century speech. Sheridan wrote in the everyday language of his audiences. Our version does the same, sticking faithfully to the plot and spirit of the original while hopefully making the dialogue more accessible. The laughter generated during our well attended first read-through of the script bodes well for a very amusing and entertaining night out for our audiences. Rehearsals are underway – further news of this exciting October production, together with dates and ticket info will be in next month’s Village Tweet and also on our website www.billingshurstdramaticsociety.com. New Neighbourhood Wardens for Billingshurst
We are delighted to welcome Barry Faust (left in the photo) and Glyn Thomas (right) as our new Neighbourhood Wardens for the parish of Billingshurst. Based within the community of Billingshurst, the Neighbourhood Wardens will work alongside partner agencies to improve the quality of life for everyone by undertaking a number of activities from enforcement to community development, working with the elderly, vulnerable and young people. They are managed by Horsham District Council, working closely with the Parish Council to set priorities. The scheme is funded by the Parish Council with financial input from the District Council. Billingshurst Parish Council Chairman, Paul Berry, said “We are thrilled that Barry and Glyn are joining us in Billingshurst and look forward to working with them to make a real difference in the community.” Neighbourhood Wardens have certain enforcement powers and carry out high visibility patrols in their respective areas to deter crime and anti-social behaviour. Horsham District Council is accredited by Sussex Police and Neighbourhood Wardens can utilise certain police powers aimed at low-level anti-social behaviour. They can also exercise powers available to them as employees of the District Council in relation to environmental offences. We look forward to working with our new colleagues and seeing them in action in the parish soon.

Volunteering – Station Road Gardens Photo: Billingshurst Angling Society
Flash-Flooding & responsibilities for watercourses The flash flooding after heavy rainfall in Billingshurst parish in the latter part of May served as a reminder of how important it is for riparian landowners to know their responsibilities for watercourses, ditches, streams, rivers or culverts alongside or within their property boundaries?
Could you spare some time to help volunteer in Station Road Gardens? Parish Council contractors and Friends of the Gardens Volunteers do a great job but help is always needed to weed and maintain the gardens. If you have a bit of time to spare and would like to help look after this delightful local amenity, please contact Keith Brown on 01403 782321.
Keeping your watercourse well maintained benefits the community as a whole. Watercourses such as ditches and culverts are designed to drain surface water away, before the water levels increase to an extent that puts property, roads, land and infrastructure at risk of flooding. The cost of maintaining a watercourse is minor compared to the costs that can arise from flood damage, not to mention the distress and inconvenience caused if your property is flooded. If a watercourse is carefully maintained, it can create an excellent habitat for wildlife. The basic principles of keeping your watercourse running clear are very simple: • Keep growth of vegetation such as trees, weeds, reeds and grass under control. • Keep watercourses free of debris, e.g. litter, grass cuttings, fallen branches and trees • Remove excess silt

Loxwood Village Fête & Fun Dog Show raises £6,400
O
n Saturday 9th June, North Hall, Loxwood, was the venue of that quintessential event that has been held in villages across the country for centuries: the village fête. Once again, Loxwood residents came together to enjoy all things that are part of village life. We were blessed with good weather again. To entertain our families, from grandparents to toddlers, our hardworking Fête Committee organised some varied and talented groups of entertainers, such as The Slinfold Concert Band, The North Singers, Ukes Awey, Children’s Magic Show and Punch and Judy. Other activities that attracted many spectators were the Fun Dog Show, Kick Dancing, Children’s Races, Children’s Tug of War and Loxwood History Society Exhibition. This year was our most successful Fête ever in terms of number of visitors and profit made. In total, the event made a profit of £6,400. Loxwood Village Fête is run specifically to provide an entertaining day for the village but also to financially help organisations within the village. This year we have managed to donate monies to nine different local
28
organisations who have applied for funding: Loxwood Village School, St Catherine’s Hospice, North Hall, Ukes Awey, The North Singers, both Loxwood and Alfold Churches, Loxwood Table Tennis Club, Loxwood Community Garden Initiative and Loxwood Medical Practice. The Loxwood Village Fête Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people and organisations who support us, including our sponsors, advertisers, stallholders, local businesses, Billingshurst Lions, Loxwood Medical Practice and all of our local people who helped out on the stalls, donated prizes for the Tombola and Grand Draw or baked cakes for the Café and Cake Stall. If we have missed you out we would like to take this opportunity to thank you. Next year’s Fête will take place on Saturday 8th June. If you feel you would like to support us in any way i.e. advertising in the programme or sponsoring part of the event, please contact Graham Moore on ginamoore@btopenworld.com. A busy summer at Billingshurst Fire Station
S
ummer is a busy time for fire fighters. In June we attended 56 calls: a mixture ranging from floods, field fires, domestic fires, RTCs, AFAs, standbys and assisting other emergency services. Well done to all crew members involved in a very busy month. It continues to be busy going into July, especially with the hot weather continuing, so stay safe, have fun, be sensible and drink lots of water. Our newest recruit is here, welcome Connor Worsfold. On Friday 29th June Connor successfully completed his two weeks’ training at Horley and Worthing Fire Stations, this means our crew numbers are now up to 12! Connor now has a number of development stages to pass before he is a competent Firefighter. Connor’s first shift on call was Sunday 1st July. Just 34 minutes in, his pager went off and he was at the station within a couple of minutes, got his kit on and within a few minutes he was fighting his first fire! Connor works in Billinghurst and his employer is supporting him, releasing him from work when his pager goes off. We really appreciate the support of all employers who release our fire fighters from work
to provide cover within our village. Do you want to join a fantastic team and help the local community? We are always looking for new recruits to join the fantastic team at Billingshurst. We are planning on holding a recruitment evening soon for anyone interested in joining to come and talk with the team so we can answer any questions you may have. Stay close to our Twitter & Facebook pages for further updates on this. Recently, 49P1 (as we are known) has attended various local fêtes and other events. The children (and grown-ups!) have enjoyed tours of our appliance, and sitting in the drivers seat! Well done to all the organisers for the success of these local events, it’s been great seeing you! Did you know we are on Twitter & Facebook? We regularly publish updates on calls we have attended, community fire safety work and sharing pictures of our teams in action! Make sure you follow & like today: Twitter: @Station49Fire Facebook: Billingshurst Fire Station Andreas Hajiantoni, Billingshurst Fire Station Photo: Connor Worsfold in training

Remembrance / About the house
There but not there
P
eople are being invited to reflect on the impact of World War One by engaging with a moving and reflective art installation in Wisborough Green this autumn. At 11am on 11th November 1918 the guns of World War One fell silent at the signing of the Armistice; the warring nations were left to mourn the scale of their loss. The centenary of the Armistice is a defining moment in our history, to reflect on how men from every community made the ultimate sacrifice. The installation of 51 transparent seated military figures in Penshurst Church for Remembrance Day in 2016, the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, lit a touch paper in the souls of all who saw it. The poppies at the Tower of London demonstrated the sheer scale of the sacrifice, so There But Not There, as the Penshurst installation was named, would bring home how every community, large and small, were deeply affected. Wisborough Green was proud to have been asked to be a ‘Pathfinder Parish’ in the There But Not There aim to place a representative figure into their place of worship, their school, their workplace or wherever their absence was keenly felt, for as many as possible of the names on local war memorials, around the country. There were 21 men who did not return to Wisborough Green and Loxwood (one ward at that time) and their names are listed on the village War Memorial. These men will be back within our community from mid-September until November, sitting in St Peter ad Vincula church
as they may well have as part of the congregation. Residents and visitors will be encouraged to sit with our fallen, remember and reflect on their courage and the ultimate sacrifice of those who did not return. Please do join us for this moving and reflective time. After the installation and decoration of the church, a special church service and reception will be held to which all current and ex-members of HM Armed Forces living in Wisborough Green and Loxwood are invited. Please do contact the Parish Clerk, Louise Davies, on (01403) 701102 or email clerk@ wisboroughgreenpc.org to register your interest. A booklet, giving as much detail as can be found on those listed on our War Memorial, will be published and as such, we are also appealing for any background information about their lives in Wisborough Green or Loxwood. Peter Drummond, Chairman of Wisborough Green Parish Council, said, “I am so proud that Wisborough Green has been involved with There But Not There from the start. It is an incredibly important anniversary. Not only will it give the whole community an opportunity to reflect on the nature of sacrifice but it will be an amazing and relevant installation in St Peter ad Vincula.” Further details of the Church opening times and other events and publications associated with this installation will be published on the Wisborough Green village website: www.wisboroughgreen.org. Local Royal British Legion members to represent Sussex at WW1 Comemmorations in Belgium
R
obert Nicholl and Andy Chennell will travel to Europe for The Royal British Legion’s Great Pilgrimage 90 on 5th-9th August. Members of the Billingshurst branch of The Royal British Legion are to join thousands on a pilgrimage of Remembrance to WW1 battlefields that culminates in a parade and ceremony in Ypres as part of the end of the First World War centenary commemorations this August. The Royal British Legion event, known as Great Pilgrimage 90 (GP90), will be one of the largest in the charity’s history and will mark 90 years since the original Royal British Legion Pilgrimage in 1928, which saw 11,000 WW1 veterans and war widows visit the battlefields of the Somme in France and Ypres in Belgium, a decade after the conflict ended. Local Legion members, Robert Nicholl (pictured) and Andy Chennell will represent the Sussex Branch and the local community at the event, as Standard Bearer and wreath layer respectively. They will tour some of the same battlefields and cemeteries visited by those on the 1928 Pilgrimage, before marching along the original route through Ypres, to the Menin Gate on the 8th August, where Andy will lay a wreath on behalf of the Billingshurst community. Colin Banks, Branch President/Chairman of the
Billingshurst Branch of The Royal British Legion, commented, “Great Pilgrimage 90 is a unique opportunity for the Legion community to come together and bear our Standards along the same route in Ypres taken 90 years earlier by the veterans and widows of the First World War. The Billingshurst Branch looks forward to proudly representing Sussex at the event.” As local champions of Remembrance, the Billingshurst Branch of The Royal British Legion is looking to work in partnership with their community to bring their unique Remembrance message to the Menin Gate, on their wreath, where it will be displayed in a wreath installation for viewing by the general public until the end of August. The parade will start at midday and we encourage the public to make the trip across to Ypres for the 8th August and fill the Market Square to watch the parade, Hundred Days Offensive ceremony and then enjoy an afternoon of musical entertainment including The Central Band of the Royal British Legion. If you want to find out more about GP90 or your local Royal British Legion branch, then please contact Colin Banks, Branch President/Chairman, tel: (01403) 784363. Book reviews / About the house
A Good Read August’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Hawley Book of the Dead – Chrysler Szarlan As the front cover of the book says: “Enter a world of secrets, mysteries and magic”. We begin with a murder. Reve kills her husband, Jeremy – on stage, in front of an audience. But she doesn’t murder him. Reve and Jeremy are a magic act performing on the Vegas Strip and the highlight of their act is ‘Defying the bullets’, but it is one of those bullets that will kill him. What at first appears to be a murder mystery of who swapped the bullets soon becomes something else as the griefstricken Reve and her three daughters leave Las Vegas and return to her ancestral home in New England, a now-deserted hamlet of homes called Hawley Five Corners. Requested to return by her Nan she is told to “remember the story of the Fetch”. Drawing on old Irish mythology of the Fetch, the Tuatha De Dannan and Tír na nÓg, this novel draws you into this strange corner of the world where children in the 1920s disappeared, some reappeared several months later but most were never seen again. Reve discovers an old book in the house which appears to be full of blank pages. Only sometimes when she opens it there is writing, and the book gives her an insight into who she really is and the history of her family. Then further tragedy strikes as her teenage twin daughters go missing. Have they disappeared just like the
earlier inhabitants of Hawley Five Corners, never to be seen again, or is there something more mundane going on? What is the truth behind the land her ancestors occupied and what will Reve do to keep her own children safe from the Fetch? What will be the ‘great reveal’ at the end of the act? Esio Trot – Roald Dahl ‘Mr Hoppy lived in a small flat high up in a tall concrete building. He lived alone. He had always been a lonely man and now that he was retired from work he was lonelier than ever. There were two loves in Mr Hoppy’s life.’ And so the short story of Esio Trot begins. This is pure, classic Roald Dahl, with silly words, silly characters, and, of course, wonderful illustrations by Quentin Blake. So, what are his two loves? Well, there are the flowers he grows on his balcony, and then there is Mrs Silver, a widow who lives in the flat below him. They only see each other when out on their balconies and Mr Hoppy has never had the courage to say more than a few words to her. But then a chance conversation changes everything. Mrs Silver has a pet tortoise called Alfie and she is concerned that Alfie doesn’t seem to grow. If only she knew how to help him grow. Mr Hoppy formulates a plan to help Alfie grow and at the same time win Mrs Silver’s affections. A plan involving silly words, a metal tube and a LOT of pet tortoises!

Happy holidays
T
aking the dog on holiday is becoming popular with many owners. A change of scene, more challenging walks and the fact that the pet is one of the family is leading to more places offering pet friendly accommodation. So whether it’s a costal adventure or a cosy country cottage or even jetsetting abroad there are some things to consider before packing those suitcases. Firstly consider whether your dog will cope with a holiday. Most will be very happy to explore new places and meet new people, but for a dog with an anxious temperament this can be all too much. So if your pet has anxiety issues they may be best left at home with a trusted friend or relation so you can both enjoy a relaxing time. If your dog is up for an adventure then the planning begins! Booking dog-friendly accommodation has never been easier! A quick Google search will bring up hundreds of results with prices to suit all budgets. Make sure the accommodation suits your needs, some dogs for instance will require a secure garden area, also check the small print as some properties will only allow a maximum of two pets and there maybe restrictions on some breeds. Make sure your dog’s flea, tick and worming treatments are up to date. Take enough of your dog’s regular food to last as long as you will be away, and take his blanket with his scent on it to help him feel settled. I also take my dog’s crate, he sees it as his safe space and will happily settle down in there in his home from home! Travelling your dog. It’s now a legal requirement in the UK for dogs to be restrained while travelling in a vehicle. This is for the safety of the driver as well as the dog. Never let your dog travel with his head hanging out of an open window this can cause injuries. Many people now fit their vehicles with specialist dog travel crates; these can be bought at good pet stores off the shelf or specifically made to fit your vehicle. Alternatively you can fit your pet with a travel harness which clips into the seatbelt anchor points in your car. This will prevent the dog from
36
being flung forward in the event of an emergency stop; it will also ensure your dog is still secure in the car in the event of an accident, as well as stopping him leaping out of the vehicle when you open a door at a rest stop. If you are planning a long journey make sure you can take your dog out for a toilet break, many service stations now have a grassed area for dogs to relieve themselves but don’t forget to pack those poo bags. It’s also a legal requirement to microchip your pet, make sure details are up to date, especially your mobile number, and attach a tag on his collar with the details of where you are staying on holiday in case the worst happens and he goes missing. For those travelling abroad check your vaccinations are up to date. A rabies vaccination will be necessary, your vet will be happy to advise you on this. You will also need to apply for a pet passport, make sure you do this in plenty of time before you travel, allow at least three weeks. Dogs returning to the UK must be treated by a vet for tapeworm 24-120 hours (1 to 5 days) before entering the country. Make sure you have a vet’s details to hand in your country of departure to make returning home as stress-free as possible. Out and about. Do some research on your destination before you arrive, with the internet this is easier than ever! Check out dog-friendly pubs and cafés and bear in mind some beaches are off limits to dogs in the summer months. Keep your dog on a lead in unfamiliar areas, especially around cliffs and water. Make a note of the nearest vet to where you are staying just in case of an emergency. Personally I love to go on holiday with the dog in the spring and autumn for some good weather and fewer crowds. With some forward planning you will be having a fabulous holiday and making memories with all of the family! Jeannette Douglas, SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.com

How to be a forester! John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
A
little while ago I was enjoying watching a lovely TV programme about the wonderful Balmoral Estate that the Queen loves so deeply. Making up a large part of the estate are the huge forests that have for centuries cloaked many parts of that beautiful Scottish countryside. Recalling this I was reminded of my one and only time when I was under instruction on the tasks that are involved in looking after such an environment. I was at college and part of our tuition was to give us a taste of the various enterprises that were available to us students in the agricultural world. Forestry was one such branch. Now, up to that point my idea of forestry work revolved around a keeper strolling through sun-flecked woodland blasting away at squirrels and other malcontents with a shotgun that rested permanently in the crook of his arm. I was wrong! It would appear that most of the tasks involve a great deal of hard, manual work! A day or two later our small party of boys were trailered off to a part of the estate that consisted of large swaths of old woodland and modern pine trees. We de-carted at the edge of an area of tall fir trees which were sparsely dotted across a hillside covering several acres with each tree surrounded by a mass of bramble and bracken that filled the space between it and its nearest neighbour to a height of three or more feet. We were informed by our instructor that in the middle of all this bramble was a multitude of young Christmas trees that had been planted just one year before. The woodland had been virtually cleared of its old timber and replanted immediately. The sudden flood of light hitting the woodland floor had released the massive resurgence of flora and it was our task to control the tangled mass and give the young trees a chance of survival. We each had a sickle and hooked stick as our weapons and heavy leather gaiters on our legs as armour. Our mentor spaced us out through the wood so that our flailing arms were a safe distance from our neighbours – a wise move as many a time we found our grip was lost on the sickle and it would fly off at a tangent offering
38
instant amputation or decapitation to anyone local to it. The proposed method was to use our hooked stick to pull the bramble up while slicing at its exposed base and rolling it back using our shielded legs as a wall to stop it falling back into place. Rather like rolling a carpet. The trouble was, predictably, every few feet there was a baby tree lurking among the thorn and bracken. How many of these poor things were sliced off as we hacked our way through I dread to think. Most were quickly pushed back rootless into the soil before our watchful tutor spotted our errors. Those whom he espied as the deed was done were subjected to much verbal abuse and a lecture on what a useless sample of hayseeds we were to the world of agriculture. We found after a while though that the art of rolling and slicing our way through the mass became far easier. Our brains even progressed to working out where the next sapling could be expected and our count of beheaded trees started to fall off. Come the end of the day we straightened our backs and examined each other’s hands and arms to see who had the most damage inflicted on them. Blood flowed from an untold numbers of scratches, and snapped off thorns would ensure many hours of needle digging on our delicate young bodies. The art of using a sickle was embedded in my brain though, and, rather like riding a bike, I never forgot how to wield this ancient weapon of the farm worker. Even today I still trim out a two hundred yard ditch each winter using the implement just to conserve the wonderful fauna that a modern machine would chop to destruction. Now, well over sixty years later, I still think back and wonder how many of those Christmas trees actual grew to maturity and how many wilted and died as they found they were no longer attached to their feet! Alas, we never did get to amble through the quiet, sun speckled woods with a shotgun under our arms, but we did start to appreciate the considerable effort that goes into making such a peaceful and beautiful place available for others to so do. Billingshurst Primary School seeks Governors
B
illingshurst Primary School are seeking people from the community to join their governing body. There are currently two vacancies for co-opted governors. Anyone over 18 can be a school governor – you don’t have to be a parent with a child at the school. Our governing body includes parent governors, who are elected by the parents at the school. School governing bodies exist to help their school deliver the best possible standard of education to all pupils. The most important qualities for being a governor are enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in education. You don’t need teaching experience, but it’s useful to bring skills from other areas of your life, for example if you work in finance, law, premises management or human resources these skills can be used to support the school. Governors are responsible for overseeing the management side of the school: strategy, policy, budgeting and staffing. They ensure that the school runs as effectively as possible, working alongside senior leaders and supporting teachers to provide excellent education to the children. Being a school governor means a commitment to attending governing body meetings (during school hours), which consider issues such as setting the

school vision, mitigating financial risk and scrutinising educational outcomes. They are also involved in the school community, acting as critical friends to the head teacher and senior leaders. According to the charity Governors for Schools, one in ten governor posts are currently vacant with the shortfall as high as one in four in some rural schools. School governors are one of the largest volunteer workforces, and around 300,000 people currently serve as governors of the 25,000 mainstream schools in England. Bik-Kay Talbot, Chair of Governors said, “I have been a school governor for seven years and I am still learning! Policies change and you have to update your knowledge regularly. School life is never static. At Billingshurst we have a committee structure, all governors sit on two committees, as well as attending a school visit and the full governing meeting once a term. It is rewarding and a privilege to be governor at Billingshurst Primary School.” To find out more about becoming a governor at Billingshurst Primary School, please email govs@ billngshurstprimary.org.uk or contact Bik-Kay Talbot, Chair of Governors, via the school: (01403) 782789. A Prom to remember
t was a glorious sunny afternoon on Thursday 28th June for The Weald school’s year 11 students and their much anticipated end-of-year prom. The students looked stylish as they started arriving for the event, emerging from a number of classic and creative modes of transport including sports cars, a stretched SUV limousine, a beach buggy and a tank! More than 200 Weald students travelled up to London via coaches that stopped at Blackfriars Pier for everyone to board the Erasmus party boat: a three-deck vessel with private London nightclub vibe which cruises along the River Thames and past many of London’s iconic sights. Students and accompanying staff members were
greeted with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and a tempting buffet, before dancing the night away until the early hours of Friday morning. For those wanting to chill out and chat, the open top deck of the boat was the place to be on such a warm and picture-perfect evening. As always, the students were complimented on their behaviour by the crew and were a credit to the school. We wish them the very best of luck in all they decide to pursue in the future, whether they continue into Sixth Form or move on to college or apprenticeships. Alison Brown, Central Administration Team Main photo: students arrived in all manner of vehicles, none as spectacular as this tank!

Daisy, Daisy…
T
here are some flowers I love because they are show-stoppers, others because of their evocative scent, and some because they are unusual. Michaelmas daisies don’t tick any of those boxes, but I love them anyway. They are bright, cheerful, and completely undemanding – at home in the poorest, driest soils, and bees and butterflies love them! They come in shades of white, blue, purple and pink. They get their common name from their flowering period, which peaks at Michaelmas, the feast of St Michael on 5th September, though they will carry on flowering well into late autumn. This means they are great for injecting colour into borders which can start to look a little washed-out and dreary in late summer. Until the mid-nineties, Michaelmas daisies were all known scientifically as asters, but then some were reclassified. Look out for the name Symphyotrichum, as many popular varieties now carry that name instead. The gardener credited with popularising the Michaelmas daisy was Ernest Ballard. Many of the varieties he cultivated are still available and bear the names of his family members. ‘Ada

Ballard’ is named for his sister and is lavender blue, ‘Marie Ballard’ is a pretty pale blue double bloom named for his wife. He is also responsible for ‘Prosperity’ and ‘Peace’, rose-pink and deep mauve respectively, which he named straight after the First World War. If you want a tallish variety suitable for the middle of the border, try ‘Little Carlow’ which grows to about 90cm and produces masses of violet-blue blooms. One of my favourites for the back of the border is ‘Calliope’ which has striking black elegant stems that reach heights of 2 metres, smothered in delicate lilac flowers. A good small variety is ‘Beggarten’ which is pale blue, compact and clump-forming. ‘Tonga’ is also smaller and is a lovely deep purple which looks great in a container. Although they are not high-maintenance plants Michaelmas daisies benefit from being cut down to ground level in late autumn and covered in a good mulch of well-rotted organic matter. And that’s all there is to it! Happy Gardening. Rachel Leverton

William Penn School get the green light!
S
even pupils from the William Penn Primary School in Coolham were presented with a national award for their great green invention, on Thursday 14th June at London Zoo. 159 schools entered the Better Energy School Awards, run by the Young People’s Trust for the Environment and 21,350 children were involved in the school projects. The judges selected a winner for the North, Scotland, Southern/Central and Wales/West. The William Penn School won the Southern/Central region, they received a shield and £1000 for their school. The William Penn Green IT team consisting of six 10-year-old pupils and one 11-year-old, who attended an after school club run by Carrie Cort from Sussex Green Living and Phil Bellas, a parent and governor at the William Penn and former IT teacher. The team were challenged to use a credit card-sized computer and £100 budget to make an invention which could save the planet. Adam Cort, one of the team members and WSCT winner of their Friend of the Environment Award explained, “We discussed lots of ideas, eventually deciding to create an invention and game to show people the environmental problems with the fashion industry.” He continued, “We researched the subject using IT, geography, science, English and citizenship skills, including Scratch, barcodes, clothes miles, shipping, crude oil, climate change, clothes materials, water use and electricity”. Their invention, the Go for Green ethical and sustainable clothes detector game uses unwanted wine boxes to create a traffic light system, a barcode scanner, Raspberry Pi, LED lights and a Scratch programme, plus two donated display panels and a collection of T shirts. People read information about the five different T shirts then attach a red, amber and green star to the T shirts, to indicate which is the most environmentally friendly, OK and the least environmentally friendly. Two of the team members created an infographic illustrating the shocking 31,000 nautical mile journey

of a cotton T-shirt. The team delivered a professional and confident presentation on stage in front of famous actors and children’s authors, MPs and about 200 children from three other schools, winners of each regional competition. The William Penn award was given by Andy Stanton, children’s author, best known for Mr Gum. Jeremy Quin, MP for Horsham also attended to learn about their work and commended the children for their amazing achievement. Another of the Green IT members, Charlie Bamsey, said, “My favourite part of the day was meeting all the celebrities including Naomi from CBBC and Jeremy Quinn our MP. We were allowed to go around London Zoo. I really enjoyed seeing the animals”. Carrie closed by saying, “I am extremely proud of the Green IT team members, some of them have been attending my William Penn Green Club since they were 6. Their Go for Green detector is conveying a powerful message in schools and events throughout West Sussex. Without their blue sky thinking this fun upcycled game would not have been invented. They are an inspiration to us all.” This totally unique award-winning invention reveals shocking facts and highlights how the fast fashion industry is the second most polluting industry, second only to fossil fuel. The invention and game is now being used by Carrie to enhance the FREE textile eco warrior school assemblies and lessons which she is delivering to primary schools throughout West Sussex. It’s being used at public events and many local residents saw it on the Sussex Green Living stand at the Billingshurst Show on Sunday 24th June and at the Sussex Green Living Share Fair in the Human Nature Garden in Horsham on Sunday 8th July. To learn more about the FREE school textile eco warrior assemblies and lessons visit www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk/parents-zone/ green-education/ or the Share Fair at www.sussexgreenliving.co.uk/event. Our Community Volunteers – Jane Cross
J
ane Cross hadn’t planned to get involved with Lark in the Park at all. However, as one of a group of Billingshurst dog-walkers who frequent Station Road Gardens, she was persuaded by Keith Brown – who manages the gardens, and who had the original idea for the event – to help organise the music and dance festival, which took place for the first time last summer. Moreover, she tells me that beyond booking the bands and planning the line-up, there was very little preparation for the event, and on that the day a number of volunteers materialised and marquees appeared. However, although Jane refers to the 2017 event as an “experiment”, it was such a success that the team immediately started thinking what they would do in 2018. The format is a simple one: live music from local musicians in a public space, advertised via Facebook and local media (including of course, Village Tweet!), and people simply turn up with their food and drink, or purchase it locally and then sit back and enjoy themselves. Jane tells me that the only cost is the generator; otherwise everything is contributed or borrowed – a real community event
of the best kind. Jane’s career began as an art teacher but after completing a Masters degree, she became more involved with behavioural support and marginalised pupils, and having lived all around the UK, she has now settled in Billingshurst where she works freelance, training teachers and support staff. She has been a regular walker in Station Road Gardens where, thanks to an early morning drop off to the station, she has taken a series of photos of the garden at different times of year, which appear on the Garden’s Facebook page. So why work on the event? Jane grins at me, “Yes, I’ve had that thought!” However, seeing so many people having a great time enjoying the music and appreciating the gardens, and as the organisation is shared by a group of people and so does not (it appears) weigh too heavily on any one person, she is happy to keep going… at least for the time being.
