elcome to the December issue of Village Tweet, the fourth Christmas issue since our launch in 2010. It’s been another good year; the magazine has steadily grown and it is often a struggle trying to fit it all in! I am grateful that so many of you send in items they feel will be of interest to the local community. Summer is now a distant memory and the dark evenings and frost on the car windscreens mean winter is nigh. With Christmas looming there is certainly plenty to do as a glance at our What’s On pages will show. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas! Boxing Day Soup Serves 4. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 30-40 minutes
METHOD
1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan and fry the onion for 5 minutes until golden. Stir in the celery and fry for 5 minutes, then add the potatoes and fry for a further 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently. 2. Add the curry paste or stuffing if using. Cook for a further minute or two, then pour in the stock. Bring to the boil and stir well. Lower the heat, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are tender. 3. Add the leftover vegetables and meat (if using) into the pan and warm through. Pour the soup into a food processor or blender and either blitz to a smooth purée, or leave a few chunks for texture. Return the soup to the pan. You may need to thin the soup to the consistency you like with hot water or stock, then taste for seasoning. Reheat thoroughly, and pour into bowls with spoonfuls of yogurt or crème fraîche swirled on top, then serve with crusty bread.

The Magic of Christmas Comes Early to Wisborough Green
I
n the run up to Christmas, the Church of St Peter ad Vincula in Wisborough Green is holding its second Advent Christmas Tree Festival from 7th-15th December to raise much needed funds for Chestnut Tree House and St Peter ad Vincula. Chestnut Tree House is the only children’s hospice in Sussex caring for children with life limiting and life threatening illnesses and relies solely on donations. The plan for the festival is to fill the church with dozens of real Christmas trees that have been kindly sponsored by local businesses and individuals. All the trees will be beautifully lit with white LED lights and decorated to a Christmas Carol and Angels theme by village groups creating a Spiritual and Magical experience. The week of festivities will commence with a

grand ‘Switch-On’ at 12 noon on Saturday 7th December. As well as viewing this amazing spectacle during the course of the festival you will also be able to enjoy a programme of music, poetry and a concert performed by talented local people. Chris Stride (member of organisation group) said, “This is one of the wonderful initiatives the church has planned to engage the community of Wisborough Green – each day the doors of the church will be open from 10.30am to 7.30pm – so, come along and have some fun, enjoy our refreshments and view our beautiful church.” Further details can be found by visiting www.wisboroughgreen.org or call Dr Graham Parr on (01403) 700793 Henrietta Warwick, Festival Committee

Keep Kirdford and Wisborough ‘Green’ Villagers overjoyed at Parish Council’s decision
V
illagers are overjoyed at Wisborough Green Parish Council’s unanimous decision to oppose Celtique’s planning application for exploratory drilling near to Northup copse (as reported in September’s Village Tweet). A special Parish Council meeting was convened at which councillors gave local people a final opportunity to express to their opinions and concerns. Tim Worrall, Chairman of KKWG, thanked the parish council for the opportunity for the community to air their views, and for the dedication to detail that they had carried out in relation to the planning application from Celtique to apply for drilling exploration. Tim gave a concise and dramatic report weighing up the dangers of such an application to the village of Wisborough Green and its community. He reviewed many well researched issues stating that the very structure of the village and its community life could be irreparably damaged and changed for ever. It would no longer be a safe, peaceful and energetic environment, bearing in mind the traffic hazards, light, water, air and ground pollution, interference to wildlife and livestock. Tim concluded with a statement that this application should be opposed on the basis that
the proposed site is completely unsuitable and inappropriate on every single level. Other members of the general public made equally heartfelt and detailed objections to the proposed application. A well qualified member with three science degrees, pointed out doubts about the credibility of Celtique. In his opinion the application was flawed from a scientific point of view. Facts were hidden, i.e. no seismic data, no consideration of the fault line data, failure to disclose chemicals that would need to be used at the exploratory stage. A spokesperson from the Sussex Wildlife Trust gave a full report on the endangered species of bats and other wildlife in the area and how this proposal would adversely affect them. It was brought to our notice that Balcombe no longer has a dawn chorus! After consultation, with the public present, Wisborough Green Parish Councillors expressed their personal views strongly opposing Celtique’s application. The decision was unanimous and the council will now move forward with their official objections carrying out the wishes of the community and building on the democratic relationship established. Local Restaurants and Cafés help to ‘Spread The Warmth’ with Age UK Horsham District this winter
A
ge UK Horsham District’s ‘Spread The Warmth’ campaign encourages the community to raise funds to support older people in the colder months. Food and drink outlets are raising funds through their customers’ favourite hot food and drink products. Every time you buy one of the toasty products to warm yourself up, you’ll also be warming up a local older person. Community Fundraiser for Age UK Horsham District, Lawrie Mallyon said, “The response from restaurants & cafés has been great. It’s giving them a chance to draw attention to winter products whilst supporting hundreds in the community.” Look out for posters advertising selected products in cafés and restaurants. Dixey CB Opticians in West Street, Horsham have recently opened up their first EyeCafé above their premises. Joint owner Dirk Bollwerk (pictured) said, “We’ll be donating 10p on all flavoured coffees so come in and try one and help a good cause!” Cathy Roberts from The Old Forge Deli in Storrington will be donating 50p from all of their homemade soups and pies. The White Horse Smokehouse & Grill in Steyning are donating £1 from their special hot winter cocktail sales during December, The Sussex Produce Café are donating 25p for each hot chocolate sold in November, The Merrythought Restaurant in the Bishopric will be donating 50p from their Special Of The Day during January and February while Horsham Coffee Roaster will be donating funds from their sales of coffee in Crates Local Produce in the Carfax.

Winter can be a risky time for vulnerable older people in England with 200 winter deaths occurring every day, 90% being in the 65+ age bracket. In Horsham District 1 in 8 older people over 65 are turning off their heating due to cost. The old adage ‘prevention is better than cure’ is as true today as it has ever been. Age UK Horsham District’s Information & Advice service unlocked nearly £1 million in benefits last year that helped with energy bills and keep older people living independently in their own homes. Janice Leeming, CEO at Age UK Horsham District, stated, “All money raised will go towards the services that we provide to maximise income and tackle loneliness and social isolation, many of which don’t receive any regular funding. We have a home visiting service that partners volunteers to visit isolated older people. We also have a brand new Housing Options service to assess the homes and requirements of older people to make sure they are safe throughout winter and beyond.” Spread The Warmth runs until March. You can view all those taking part on the Age UK Horsham District website www.ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk. If you own a food and drink outlet and would like to get involved contact Lawrie Mallyon on 07910 385926 or email communityfundraising@ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk for a free information pack. Lawrie Mallyon Hi my name is Lee Cuddis. I have been hairdressing for 30 years within Toni&Guy and ran my own salon for 16 years. Being trained by one of the most renowned hairdressers in the world I have been able to go on and train numerous stylists who now run successful, top salons around the globe. In my career I have worked on many catwalk shows, professional photos shoots and been a guest judge for Wella competitions. I am now extremely excited to bring my knowledge to you within a relaxed, beautiful countryside setting at my home here in Coneyhurst, West Sussex, where you will be listened to and given advice on how to get the most from your haircut at home as I understand it can be intimidating in a salon setting. I can show you easy techniques from blow drying to styling your hair at home. You will also be able to enjoy a freshly brewed coffee or a chilled glass of wine while you relax and enjoy your time away from it all. As featured in the West Sussex County Times

Jack & The Beanstalk
ack and his mother, Dame Trott, find themselves with very little money and an evil Baron who is on the verge of evicting them from their home. They decide that the only way they can find the money to pay off their debts is to sell the family cow – but who will buy her? After all, she’s not producing milk anymore! Just as Jack fears the worst a mystery buyer comes along, and with all the money from the sale their house should be safe. But what’s this? The evil Baron’s henchmen with a money-making plan of their own. Poor Jack and his mother look to be ruined until a magical beanstalk, a Giant who isn’t quite what he seems, and the Baron’s Daughter hatch a plan to bring happiness to everyone in the village. With a host of the usual colourful pantomime
characters lending their assistance along the way, Jack & the Beanstalk promises to be an evening of laughter and huge enjoyment to all. Written and Directed by Graeme Jenkins, the pantomime opens at Sullington Parish Hall on the 4th with further performances on the 5th and 6th December and a matinee on Saturday 7th. Canine Partners Opens its First Pop-Up Shop
N
ational assistance dog charity Canine Partners is to open its first pop-up shop at a prime location in the centre of Midhurst. The shop is a first for the Charity, which is based on the outskirts of Midhurst at nearby Heyshott, and will place the local charity in the heart of the town in the run up to Christmas. The Canine Partners shop will move into West Street, Midhurst and be open for business from 5th November, remaining open through the festive season until the end of January. Staff, volunteers and local partnerships from the local charity will run the store which will sell luxury Christmas cards and gifts as well as a range of fabulous preloved evening wear and accessories. Jill Green, Head of Regional Fundraising, said, “This will be a fabulous opportunity for us to be part of the community in Midhurst and hopefully to meet more people who may have an interest in the life changing work that we do. “It really is a perfect opportunity to pick up a great bargain as the party season looms as well as those last-minute festive gifts that we all need once life starts to get busy around Christmas and New Year time. “We are inviting everyone to come along and spend some time with us and get to know us better. We’re really looking forward to welcoming people into the shop.” Over the coming weeks the Charity has planned an exciting programme of events including Party Week starting Monday
22
24th November, during which author Alice Petersen will be signing her new novel as well as special Canine Partners dog treats and recipes available in store. The shop will also feature a special Christmas Week theme beginning 9th December which will see our own Mr December, the adorable puppy Magnum who features in our calendar, pop in to meet visitors as well as a special photo session with our amazing puppies on Saturday 14th December. Jill added, “Over the weeks ahead there really will be something for everyone. We’re hoping as many people as possible pop in to see us and of course dogs are welcome.” Canine Partners is a national charity that trains assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities including civilians and members of HM Armed Forces. The dogs are trained to help with everyday tasks such as opening and closing doors, unloading the washing machine, picking up dropped items, pressing buttons and switches and getting help in an emergency. They also increase independence, confidence and self-esteem and bring companionship, a sense of security and increased social interaction. Opening hours, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. The Three Not So Little Pigs
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …
A
fter Lily had complained about her ‘Neighbours from Hell’ Anne decided to move Humphrey and give both Dottie and the sheep in the nursery some peace. That took a little time to happen but eventually Humphrey was very happily rehomed in a larger pen with a huge ark all to himself and Dottie breathed a sigh of relief. So did the sheep. Several weeks later, much to everyone’s astonishment, Dottie produced a litter of lovely piglets – all of them looking exactly like their dad! All through the hot summer months they grew and grew until the ark was too small for all of them and Dottie. So Anne arranged for three of them to move to another farm. All paperwork done, Bill and Grandad started the relocation process. Despite food in bucket waving, none of the little pigs were willing to leave home. Finally, with Bill pulling, and Sally pushing, three little pigs were coaxed, coerced and pushed into the trailer and the journey started. That is when the real fun began… Bill and Grandad couldn’t find the farm they were going to. A phone call (thank goodness for mobile phones and Grandad was actually carrying his that day) fixed that. They stopped at the farm, and the new owner showed them
where to go to get to the pigs’ new home. Grandad’s heart sank. It was a very narrow, bumpy track with a ditch running down each side. Very, very carefully Grandad reversed the truck and the trailer along the track until finally they reached the paddock where the pigs were to go. It was pig paradise. All overgrown with yummy bushes a brand new ark all warm and comfy and an electric fence to keep predators out (and them in of course). Bill lowered the back of the trailer to find the three pigs fast asleep. They had obviously enjoyed the ride. They just as obviously did not want to move house because they wouldn’t budge. Neither pushing nor food in the bucket was enough to motivate them. At last in frustration Bill grabbed their ears and pulled them out of the trailer. The first one to hit the electric fence was Bill who screamed blue murder. Grandad, sensible man, maintained he was just the driver and kept out of it. After finishing their task, both men went home as fast as they could. The three pigs found themselves in hog heaven and soon made themselves at home. Little did they know that Christmas was coming! Surviving Christmas
S
urviving a modern-day Christmas can be challenge enough for humans, but just imagine how difficult it is if you’re a plant. You’ve been reluctantly forced to flower, grown in a light-controlled polytunnel and you’ve been force-fed with growth-stunting hormones to ensure you’re not too straggly when flowering on Mrs Cratchit’s table… and here’s me feeling sorry for the turkey! It seems such a shame that after all the effort, you go and kill the poor thing after just one week of taking custody. This year will be different though, because whether giving or receiving a houseplant this festive yuletide, help is at hand with my top tips for keeping them alive – until New Year at least! House plants give such a wonderful display, and are sure to last longer than a bunch of flowers. Choose from large flowering Cyclamen, brightly coloured Azaleas, sweetly scented Jasmine and of course the traditional Poinsettia (pictured). Oh, and don’t forget about bulbs, ‘Paperwhite’ Narcissus are synonymous with Christmas, and forced Hyacinths too, but I can appreciate that their strong scent is best savoured in spring. Before we go on to the care of houseplants, let’s just clear one thing up, houseplants hate houses! Dry central heating, low light levels and draughts are all things houseplants really don’t like, as most of these plants come from very humid, tropical parts of the world. The best way to ensure your flowers bloom for longer and your leaves don’t go brown at the tips, is to ensure the right conditions for survival. • Avoid placing plants in a draughty location such as windowsills, or near to a frequently opened

door, (they won’t appreciate the large fluctuations in temperature) • Avoid hotspots, such as in front of or above a radiator or fire • Water plants by plunging them into a bowl of tepid (not cold) water, and then allowing the water to fully drain out from the pot before returning to its location • Azaleas like humid conditions, so stand these on a tray of gravel filled with water (but ensure plants are not sat in water) • Create a ‘plant area’ where groups of plants can be stood together, this will create more humidity • Avoid direct sunshine • Ensure the compost never dries out or is too saturated; water little and often • Remove faded flowers to prevent disease and to promote flowering And finally, don’t get emotionally attached, think of flowering houseplants as a medium-term bunch of flowers or a Christmas decoration, and after flowering if they look a little jaded, send them to the compost heap in the sky – I don’t think there’s any worse house plant tragedy than a straggly Poinsettia in July with three stunted yellow leaves. Poinsettias are popular because they look wonderful, but here’s a little word of warning: be careful not to get the sap of a Poinsettia on your skin as it can cause irritation, and always keep them out of reach of pets and children. Have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year. Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net

The Great Escape!
aika’s new friend, Luca (introduced in last month’s Village Tweet) appears to have settled in very well next door and with the fencing panels renewed, drastic measures were called for to resume their familiarity. In no time at all, frantic digging became the order of the day with Laika becoming positively excavatorlike as she feverishly removed quantities of my Miracle Grow vegetable and fruit compost to release her pal. Slowly, white paws followed by a grubby white face and shoulders appeared on our side to be eagerly licked and nuzzled encouragingly by Laika. Resembling a limbo dancer, Luca began to emerge… before I stepped in to put a stop to their canine frivolities! Such distractions! And now ‘The north wind doth blow…’ and our woodlands have finally taken on a wintry feel. Bare paths are now cushioned in a collage of browns, skeletal trees reach up to battleship greycoloured skies and my wellies have long since lost their dusty covering from infrequent use! Long dark mornings and nights are made ghostly with troglodytic workers and dog-walkers cocooned in
wool and waterproofs who scurry under orange street lights. At least the cats have sought refuge by the fire and on laps and my before-bed walks with Laika are more gentle affairs without the sudden ‘launching’ at feline shapes that marred our summer jaunts. Laika has reverted to her winter-walking timetable which allows for a later start and an earlier evening outing – I haven’t yet had recourse to an LED headlamp! But evidence of a marvellous summer abounds with bedraggled burdock, both lesser and greater (who remembers Corona’s Dandelion and Burdock?) standing erect and still sporting their hooked bracts which form burrs! These nasty members of the daisy family have an affinity for long-haired German Shepherds and Laika’s post-walk hosedown now has an added dimension with the inclusion of a burr-plucking session. Not as easy as it sounds with the wretched things breaking up into smaller nasties and Laika getting increasingly agitated as I attempt to extract each from the depths of her dark fur. If only I had a Labrador! Ron Myal

Winter skin problems
his month we focus on how to recognise winter skin problems – what you can treat yourself and what needs the services of a vet. Mud fever. This condition is caused by bacteria, one of the most common being Dermatophilus which enters the skin through tiny lesions caused by skin being subjected to wet and muddy conditions; this can weaken the skin structure allowing infection in. Symptoms consist of tiny scabs under which the bacteria thrive and this can lead to severe infection and inflammation of the legs if left untreated. Most minor cases of mud fever can be treated successfully by the horse owner using an antibacterial wash to cleanse and gently remove the scabs and afterwards making sure the area is thoroughly dry before adding a topical cream (make sure it is one that the skin can still breathe through) before turnout. Also try to avoid turnout in excessively wet and muddy conditions. There are also turnout boots on the market aimed at preventing mud fever but be careful the horse’s legs do not get too hot underneath them. Serious cases of mud fever will need antibiotic treatment from a vet – always ask your vet for advice if you are worried about your horse’s health. Some very sensitive horses can also get mud fever from wet grass, especially those with white legs and pink skin, so it pays to be vigilant all year round, not just in winter. The ingestion of certain plants – especially St John’s Wort can also cause photosensitivity on white legs which can be mistaken for mud fever so make sure paddocks are clear of any poisonous plants. Rain scald. This is a very similar condition to mud fever that affects the horse on its back causing small pussy scabs under the hair. It is caused by the horse’s skin becoming very soft due to damp conditions and can also occur if horses are sweating under their rugs. Treatment is similar to mud fever in that the scabs need to be removed and the skin washed with an antibacterial wash and thoroughly dried. Removing the horse from pasture and keeping in a clean dry stable will help treat the condition more quickly. Make sure any rugs the horse wears are cleaned and any grooming brushes are not
shared to prevent the spread of infection. Making sure the horse is dry after exercise and that he is not sweaty and damp under his rug will also help to prevent the condition. As with mud fever serious cases will need antibiotic treatment. Ringworm. This condition is not caused by a worm, but a fungus. It is highly contagious and is also transferable to humans, so utmost care must be taken when treating infected animals. Symptoms are crusty often circular lesions most commonly affecting the head and neck, but they can also show up in other places. Treatment is usually by means of an antifungal wash that can be supplied by an agricultural merchant licensed to sell wormers and other medications, or your vet. It is vitally important to keep all brushes and rugs used by the infected horse well away from others and the horse should preferably be in an isolation box with one person dealing with its needs to prevent it spreading through a yard. Thrush. This is a condition of the horse’s hoof causing a foul smelling discharge from the frog of the horse’s foot. Again it’s caused by bacteria in the soil and from dirty, wet bedding. Thrush should be relatively easy to resolve with correct management. If, despite doing all the right things, it is lingering or getting worse call a farrier or vet as it’s possible it could be canker which is an altogether more serious condition. The farrier will also be able to trim back the frog and get rid of any decaying tissue which will make the condition easier to treat. The bacteria that cause thrush are killed by oxygen so cleaning out the feet with a hoof pick every day, preferably twice, will prevent bedding and soil from packing into the horse’s feet giving thrush bacteria ideal conditions. There are plenty of hoof ointments on the market which claim to treat thrush – ask your farrier which one he recommends. I hope you all have a trouble free winter – and a happy Christmas! ollowing a career spanning 30 years at Plaistow Pre-School, Carol Krol has been recognised as ‘Teacher of the Year 2013’ at the Spirit FM Local Hero Awards held at The Avisford Hilton Hotel earlier this month. On the night, the Lead Practitioner at the PreSchool was presented with a beautiful award and a cheque for £200 that was given to DEBRA, Carol’s chosen charity. Carol has seen generations through the PreSchool and is much loved by the pre-schoolers and their parents. Vicky Miliam, the Mum who nominated Carol for the award said, “We felt Carol should be recognised for her outstanding contribution to the village in which she lives and works with such boundless enthusiasm. She works so hard without seeking praise. Carol Krol is a truly special lady.” What makes Carol so special is her amazing knowledge and understanding of each child on every level.
