Y
es, it’s the Christmas issue of Village Tweet, filled with things to do over the festive season starting with Billifest on 6th December in Jengers Mead, Billingshurst. This wonderful annual event is sure to put you in the Christmas mood! It is of course important to support our local shops and businesses. Many advertisers are offering Village Tweet readers Christmas gift vouchers; these make ideal presents for friends and family. As the year draws to a close I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to Village Tweet in 2014. Merry Christmas! New ‘flight’ gift vouchers set to take off for Christmas
H
ave you, or someone you know, ever wondered what it would be like to fly a Boeing 737? Or are you simply looking for a present with a difference this year? The Virtual Flight Centre in Coolham, near Horsham, has launched a series of gift vouchers in time for Christmas and people looking for a great present for their family and friends now have a variety of options to choose from. You can buy vouchers for ‘flight experiences’ starting from 30 mins for £99 (which includes 30 mins briefing, 30 mins flying a Boeing 737 flight simulator and 30 mins acting as co-pilot). Or, if you think they’re up to it, why
not buy a voucher for the 1.5 hour flight during which they can try flying in adverse weather conditions and landing at some of the world’s most challenging airports? And for the first time you can now buy gift vouchers for as little as £20 which can be used towards paying for someone’s ‘flight’. All vouchers last for 12 months from the date of purchase. For further information about the different flight experiences available, prices or to buy a gift voucher online, visit www.virtualflight.co.uk. For great gift ideas, the sky’s the limit!

Billifest Family Fun Day & Christmas Fayre Jengers Mead – Saturday 6th December, 9am-4pm
E
ach year the Billifest organising committee invite the children of the Billingshurst Primary School to participate in a competition to design the front of the flyer which advertises the event. This year again produced work of very high quality and indeed the judging was so difficult it was decided to award a joint-first prize. The winners were Georgia Offei and Elsie Jarvis who can be seen here being presented with their £10 Amazon vouchers by Denise Campbell (Chair of Billingshurst Community Partnership) at a recent school assembly. This year’s BILLIFEST offers a traditional Family Fun Day – with the emphasis firmly on Christmas – alongside an exciting all-day programme of events. By popular demand Billingshurst Butchers will again be providing a hog roast and there will be a full range of exhibits and entertainments for adults and children alike. As usual, there will be
the now famous ‘mega-raffle’ with over 20 prizes ranging from hampers to restaurant vouchers and all generously donated by local retailers and businesses. The draw will take place at 3pm so ‘be in it to win it’! Once again over 25 exhibitors will be in the grand marquee in the main car-park representing their various organisations and associations, so make sure to drop by and support those who make such an important contribution to our village life. We promise a fun-packed day for all the family so in the unlikely event of inclement weather remember, ‘there is no such thing as bad weather – just the wrong clothes!’ See you there! Cranberry Bread & Butter Pudding METHOD
1. Poach the dried cranberries in the cranberry juice with 2 tsp sugar. Reduce the mixture down until it thickens and becomes a little jammy. Place it on one side to cool. 2. In a separate dish beat together the milk, cream (if using) and eggs, and then stir in the sugar and grated orange rind. 3. Butter the bread on both sides and place into a buttered dish, alternating layers of bread with layers of cranberry. Finish with a layer of bread then sprinkle a few cranberries over the top. 4. Pour the egg mixture over everything and let the pudding rest for at least 2 hours (or overnight in the fridge). 5. Preheat the oven to 180°C or gas mark 4. Sprinkle the finished pudding with soft brown sugar and place in the oven for 45 minutes. This is lovely served with crème fraîche or custard.

Health and wellbeing Local teens smash it up!
L
ocal teenagers are being encouraged to get active at Billingshurst Leisure Centre at an all new session from Badminton England. With a modern ‘mashed up’ mix of big hitting badminton challenges, mates, music playlists and bold court branding, sociable SmashUp! sessions are rocking Billingshurst sports hall every Friday evening. SmashUp! runs 5-6pm for 10-13-year-olds and 7-8pm for 13-16-year-olds. There’s no dress code and no equipment required, just turn up and join in. George Wood, Community Game Director from Badminton Enlgand, says, “SmashUp! is a perception changing programme all about mates, bassline pumping music and big hitting badminton challenges. It repackages the sport for a new generation of young people who want a casual, informal way to play.” Ellie (11) tried SmashUp! at the taster event in September and said, “Smash up is brilliant, it makes badminton so much more fun!” For more information on SmashUp! sessions visit www.billingshurstleisurecentre.co.uk or call 01403 787500.

Young cyclists stay safe with Bike-It initiative
W
ith days becoming shorter and nights drawing in, the temptation to jump into the car to do the school run becomes harder to resist. As a fledgling Bike-It school Billingshurst Primary School has been campaigning for over a year to encourage pupils and parents to participate in a culture of active travel to and from school and with winter fast approaching there is no exception. The school’s Bike-It Crew have been stepping up their efforts with a focus on staying safe during the darker days. Following a year of involvement in this national initiative, Billingshurst Primary School has seen an increase of 30% of pupils regularly cycling, walking or scooting to school. To celebrate the success of the program the school held its third Bike-It Breakfast on 7th November, which provided Philip Borroughs Bike-It Officer, Chichester and Horsham, Sustrans South-East with a valuable opportunity to offer a few simple guidelines for staying safe in the winter months whilst still staying active. Philip Borroughs comments: “There are a few simple steps to staying safe in winter: • Dress warmly and appropriately for the weather • It is important to wear bright colours with as much reflective gear as possible to make sure you are seen • It is the law to have lights on your bike if it is dark • Parents must ensure their children are confident riders
• Conduct regular bike checks • For older children on bikes; make sure you are aware and know the rules of the road. Know what is going on around you, anticipate, make sure you communicate your intentions clearly to other road users so as not to surprise them • Again for older children, it is always safer and more fun to cycle in sensible groups • Watch out for black ice. By being aware of the changing conditions and taking appropriate measures to ensure you’ll be seen, you can continue to enjoy a more active approach to travel. There is nothing like cycling on a clear brisk morning.” Following this advice, over 150 pupils, parents and siblings arrived early for the Bike-It Breakfast and were treated to breakfast thanks to Kavanagh’s Budgens, a keen supporter of the initiative. The Bike-It program continues to develop and grow within the school, with a number of events taking place over the past few months to encourage and support the pupils, including assemblies on safety and workshops on how to check your bike is safe to ride. ‘Fee-fi-fo-fum’ – it must be Jack & The Beanstalk!
A
Hero, a Princess, a Giant, a magnificent Beanstalk, a Dragon, a Dame, oh and a Pantomime Cow! The Barns Green Players are bringing you a giant of a panto to start the New Year off with a bang! It’s Panto time again! Jack and the Beanstalk will entertain you royally with everything you would expect and a whole lot more! It promises to be a laugh-a-minute romp with loads of songs, surprises, dancing and general joining in fun and silliness. There will be a total of six shows performed over two weekends in the Barns Green Village Hall this coming January. The shows will be on Friday 16th (evening), Saturday 17th (afternoon and evening), Friday 23rd (evening), and Saturday 24th (afternoon and evening). Zoe Munday and Warren Blanchard are jointly Directing the production and are extremely excited about this year’s production. Zoe said, “We have already done a lot of planning for this year’s show and I am so excited about all the tricks and special effects, scenery and costumes that we have lined up. The script is exceptional and with the very talented comic actors we have in the Barns Green Players it is shaping up to be one of our best ever shows. Warren Blanchard, who is also Chairman of the group added,
“At Barns Green Players we set ourselves very high standards but we are always looking to improve our shows and add even more to the fun that the audience will have and we are looking forward to providing some surprises and entertainment for as many people as possible at the six performances”. The shows are aimed at all ages although the afternoon performances are particularly suitable for the very youngest children. There are singalongs and sweets for the kids and opportunities for the audience to join in with the fun. For the evening performances there is a licensed bar serving a variety of alcoholic and soft drinks as well as sweets. The afternoon performances begin at 2pm and evening performances at 7.30pm. If you are regulars at the Barns Green Players’ Pantos you will know just what a terrific show they put on and if you haven’t been before you are in for a real treat. Tickets cost £10 for adults, £7 for children. There is a special price of just £6 for tickets on Friday 16th January. Tickets are available from the Box Office (01403) 731566 or www.barnsgreenplayers.co.uk We look forward to welcoming you in January for some great fun and entertainment. Nigel Currie

A Good Read December’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett

Orange Pear Apple Bear Monkey and Me Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears All by Emily Gravett With simple text and charming illustrations, there is an Emily Gravett book to suit all ages. Orange Pear Apple Bear is beautifully simple, with a different permutation of the title on every page, and will provoke big laughs from babies. (Apple Bear is the current favourite in our house). Available as a sturdy board book, it can be revisited again and again.) Monkey and Me is well suited to toddlers who will identify with the main character as, along with her toy monkey, she goes to
see all kinds of animals. The simple repetition in the text will have little ones ‘reading’ along and anticipating the revelation on the next page – perfect for reading aloud. Finally, Little Mouse’s Big Book of Fears is an award-winning book, which is ideal for slightly older readers. Each page details a different one of Little Mouse’s fears, encouraging children to talk about why they might be frightened of things like the dark or monsters under the bed. The real delight here is the multi-layered illustrations, with chewed pages (aided by real mice!) notes, scribbles and annotations. This, and the others above, deserve to become modern classics.

Raw Spirit – Iain Banks Subtitled ‘In Search of the Perfect Dram’, this book is the story of Iain Banks’ journey around Scotland, visiting as many single malt whisky distilleries as he can and tasting as many types as possible – surely every whisky lover’s dream holiday. At first Iain Banks can’t believe that a publisher really wants him to undertake the task of visiting all of Scotland’s distilleries – there are around a hundred of them, not including those which have closed. Then he begins to realise what an opportunity it is. So, accompanied by various friends and relations, he sets off – stipulating only that he can drive himself and can stop off at home several times to return the spoils of his visits in the shape of as many bottles of single malt as he can carry. From the ‘tourist traps’ of Glenfiddich to the smaller operations like Aberfeldy, he takes us on a journey through the world of whisky. Banks’ style is humorous and engaging throughout, from the first visit to Islay to his final trip to Oban. This is what makes this much more than a tasting guide – in fact, it’s as much a travel book for his beloved Scotland and includes a fair smattering of autobiography, too. If you’re a lover of Uisgebaugh then you may or may not agree with his choice of the perfect dram, but you’ll certainly have fun comparing notes. And, if whisky isn’t your thing then there’s enough scenery, humour and even political comment to keep your interest throughout. The perfect Christmas gift for a whisky-lover.

Christmas past made present
L
ong before the introduction of central heating and other luxuries of the 20th and 21st centuries, people required greater faith that they would safely survive the harsh upcoming winter. One such symbolic display of this hope was the beautiful Christmas wreath. Now creeping back in fashion and available in a number of guises, they can be found hanging on doorways, both inside and out, as a centrepiece on a table, and even hung on walls as decorations. Although we may have lost the traditional reasoning behind displaying such garlands, I’m on a mission to bring them back… in whatever style suits your home. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. Fuse this with ‘wrethe’ from middle English (meaning a twisted band or ring of leaves) and you have the wreath as we know it today. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity, or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. In ancient Rome the symbol became a popular display of victory. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. At this bleak time of year, it’s wonderful to use evergreens and other brightly coloured flowers, foliage, or fruits to adorn your wreath. The addition of expensive and rare fruits such as
pomegranates indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations had been taken down, the edible elements would be eaten and the bounty of summer enjoyed in the depth of winter. Making your own wreath is fun and easy, and can vary from a simple and cheap evergreen circle to an elaborate bauble ring. For those who like a quick and easy option, simply buy a circle of oasis and soak it in tepid water, before sticking in sprigs of evergreen foliage from the garden: flowers, berries, dried fruits, nuts, and bows. If you have more time why not make your own base by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay, holding it in place using thinner gauge wire, then wiring in the foliage and decorations. Be aware though that holly wreaths are prickly and gloves should be worn! The Americans seem to be leading the way in the contemporary wreath, so why not try something a little different this year such as a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, dried sweetcorn cobs, pussy willow or even a ring of astroturf! Merry Christmas! Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net Photos: Search flick-r for some inspirational Christmas wreaths. These by hello-julie, katiek2 and Tom Magliery

The Art and Craft Fair at Kelsey Hall on 18th October was a great success with proceeds amounting to £628.65! The money goes to Kelsey Hall, a registered charity, for its continued upkeep. The stallholders enjoyed a steady stream of visitors and everyone remarked on the friendly atmosphere and delicious refreshments. An event like this does not run itself, there are many people who willingly give up their time… A huge thank you most especially to Pat Laidlaw, an absolute star, who expertly organised the refreshments with her willing cohort Lynne Clark; ably helped on the day by Susan Laidlaw, Barbara McNulty, Wendy Gravestock, and Sue Bowman. Thanks to all those who donated homemade cakes for the refreshments. The washing up was willingly done by Alan Collin with the help of handcream from the bee products stall! The raffle was manned (and womanned!) by, Carolyn Saunders, Robert Lewcock, Christine Gibson-Pierce, John Lisk, Bridget Orzel and Peter Seager-Thomas. Last and by no means least thanks to all those who helped set up on Friday night and clear up at the end on Saturday, most of whom have already been mentioned but also include Carrie Osborne and Sally Napier-Fenning and the committee of Kelsey Hall. Feeding for condition
W
ith winter now set in and with Dr Green declining in nutritional quality some horses find it hard to keep condition on. For most native pony owners winter is a great time to get the pony slim before the onset of spring grass but for owners of ‘poor doers’ winter can be a nightmare when it comes to keeping their horse in tip top condition. So, what can be done? Hopefully this article will help. If your horse suffers sudden weight loss please get him looked at by your vet in case of an underlying medical issue; it may also be a good idea to get the horse checked for stomach ulcers as these can lead to poor condition too. Make sure the horse has been wormed correctly and that dental checks have been carried out. In addition to these checks there are many things you can do to help improve condition over the winter months… Temperature. Keep the horse at a comfortable temperature, if the horse is clipped ensure he’s warm enough and adequately rugged according to weather conditions. Fibre first. Before reaching for the conditioning mix check your horse’s forage ration. If you are feeding poor quality hay the horse won’t be receiving as many nutrients, so although poor hay is often cheaper to buy it is false economy in the long run; good hay will be a pale green colour with a very nice fresh sweet smell to it. Discard any hay which smells mouldy. Good hay will be leafy with no evidence of weeds. You may wish to feed haylage and again look for a pleasant fresh smelling bale, and steer clear of any that has a vinegary smell. Haylage is higher in moisture than hay so you will need to feed more weight to achieve the same volume of dry matter. For poor doers it is important to offer hay or haylage on and ad lib basis so the animal has access to forage at all times. Keep it clean by putting it in a haynet or hay bar to save wastage on forage being trodden into the bed. If the horse lives out consider using a ring feeder, but this will need to be moved from time to time to prevent poaching. Sugar beet is a popular winter feed, it is high in fibre and is available in both molassed and unmolassed versions. It must be fed soaked to horses and is very palatable. Alfalfa is a superb fibre feed and can be feed as a

chop or as a pellet that is best fed soaked. Alfalfa is high in protein and very nutritious it is also believed to have a buffering effect on stomach acid and therefore would be a good feed for those prone to stomach ulcers. Oil is a great way to add calories to the diet without adding too much volume. Horses utilise oils very well, and the most popular are soya and linseed for adding condition. Linseed is also available in a micronized form eliminating the need to boil it for hours, something older readers will certainly remember! Rice bran and Copra meal are also high in oil are are becoming very popular with horse owners in the UK. Conditioning feeds. All horse feed manufacturers offer a conditioning mix or cube. These are higher in energy than maintenance rations, remember energy and calories are the same thing. Horses that can be a little lively when fed a mix may be better to be fed on a cube ration as these are lower in starch and less likely to cause exuberant behaviour. Balancers are very nutrient dense high protein feeds designed to make up for any nutrient shortfalls in a horse’s ration. They can help with condition by providing high quality digestible protein to help with muscle growth and repair. Many balancers also contain probiotics or yeast to help with the digestion of fibre to enable the horse to get the very best out of its diet. Prebiotics and probiotics. These help the bacteria in the gut to better break down fibre and digest it more efficiently enabling the horse to get the most nutritional value out of its diet as possible; these are very useful after worming or antibiotic treatment. Remember to feed little and often – three small meals are far better for the horse’s digestive system than one large feed. Keeping your horse well exercised is great for ‘topline’ and muscle tone and some horses can look poor, not because they are undernourished but in fact they are lacking in muscle tone. Happy horse keeping – and MERRY CHRISTMAS and may we look forward to 2015! Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

he Billingshurst Lions Club sleigh has been touring Billingshurst and the local villages for at least 20 years. In the areas we visit we make door-to-door collections, play carols as we approach the houses, and we always have a Father Christmas distributing (healthy!) treats for the children. Because of the size of the area we represent we are unable to visit every property and, in the villages, we do concentrate on the main centres of population. We will be visiting the areas below from 6-8pm When Wed. 3rd Dec. Thu. 4th Dec. Fri. 5th Dec. Sat. 6th Dec.

Little Tweeters! / Accountancy
Lambs for Christmas? NO WAY!
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
D
ottie and Twiglet kept a good watch on the comings and goings of the little farm as they nestled cosily in their (sort-of) mud-free straw filled ark. Nanny’s idea (outlined in last month’s Village Tweet) seemed to be working so far and mud was mostly being left on their wooden front porch. And could be scraped off. One fine day in early October (remember it was warm and dry then) a Land Rover with a trailer came down the driveway and Nanny went out to meet it. She shook the man’s hand (he was called David) and opened the gate to the No.2 Paddock. She was very excited. David opened the back of the trailer and out clattered the new arrivals: four chocolatish brown sheep. “This one’s Siobahn,” David said, “she’s seven. And this is Ethel, her daughter, a this-year’s lamb as is this one, Ellie.” He pointed to the Brave New World. last one, “That’s Rita. She’s eight.” The four new girls looked around a bit and then started munching the grass that Grandad had had to mow the week before because it was too long for sheep. Nanny was so pleased with her new girls she could hardly wait to tell David her plans to dig up Dottie’s old ark and put in a fence and… and… and… David just laughed, “They’re Shetland sheep, they won’t need shelter. They’re used to being out in all weathers.” Despite this, Nanny (you know her by now) decided she would go ahead anyway with what she had planned to do… First step was getting the new girls used to her, so she bucket-fed them and then taught them to eat sheep crunchies out of her hand. That done it was onto the second step – excavating Dottie’s old ark out of an overgrown and over-mudded pig paddock. “You’ll never be able to get that out, it’s too bedded in,” warned Sally. “You’ll need to get Henry and his digger. It’s too much for you, Mum,” said Anne. Of course Nanny was stubborn. “Oh yes I WILL,” she thought and then proceeded to crawl around the inside of the ark, getting filthy dirty, brushing away huge spiders and other creepy-crawlies (good thing she
didn’t mind them too much), digging out the foot of mud and straw which had accumulated over the two years of Dottie’s residence there. Finally after nearly two weeks of hard work she was able to lever the ark up and put it on blocks. The next step needed more muscle so Rob (the lawnmower man) and Grandad and Nanny heaved the ark onto its side. It squelched out of the mud and the three of them end-over-ended it out through the narrow gate onto its round back. They then hauled it into position and laid it on a rubber mat. Exhausted but exhilarated they sat down and had a cup of well earned tea and scraped the mud off their boots. Nanny strawed it up and then of course the sheep, inevitably, refused to use it. By dropping sheep crunchies into it, Nanny enticed Ellie and Ethel, the two little girls, into it and eventually during really wet days they used Siobhan leads… it much to Nanny’s delight. The older two, trained to weather, stood out in the rain. Because the sheep were Shetlands they ate everything: trees, shrubs, dried grass and soon the edges of the paddock were denuded. Nanny opened the gate of the old overgrown pig paddock and the girls devoured everything in there too – except of course the one plant Nanny hated the most – stinging nettle. The penultimate step – apart from hand-feeding them every day – was to put up the dividing fence and that took Nanny two whole days. It wasn’t long before Siobahn worked out a way through it and the rest followed. Hasty repairs had to be made. The very final step has to be planned very carefully and that is the next project: making a ‘catching area’ for sheep-y things to be done like shearing, feeting and worming. Completion date? Hopefully by the time you are reading this. All the characters and animals here wish you a very Happy Christmas and invite you to join us again as we enter the fifth year of tales from the little farm near Billingshurst. downs can see data and hard drives damaged or corrupted. A UPS will vary in price from around ÂŁ60-ÂŁ70 up to a few hundred and as always, you get what you pay for. Please note, the cheaper your UPS the less time it will give you without electricity. Some will only keep your computer going for about half an hour (but even this will allow you to shut it down properly and save all files you are working on). But a router uses much less power and so if you have a laptop or a tablet, as long as your router is going you’ll have Internet access. Here, as every UPS will protect your computer from an unexpected shut down, you need to decide on your next priority. If you need both extended computer and router power then you’ll need to go for a more expensive UPS. But if you just need to keep your router going then a UPS from the cheaper end of the spectrum will do. Whatever you spend, it’ll be one of the best gifts you get yourself this Christmas, protecting your computer (and your data) and staying ‘connected’ this winter – whatever the weather throws at you! And if you need a little help choosing the right UPS or even getting it properly set up with all the right settings in place, then you can give us a call and not only can we source one for you but we can install it too. e love winter! We love the cosy nights in front of the fire and the approaching excitement of Christmas, as well as the possibility of snow. (Just a light dusting, of course.) What we don’t love is the bad weather that can bring about power cuts that we seem so prone to in our area during autumn and winter. For the majority, a power cut, as well as the usual inconveniences, also means no computer and no Internet. So, what can you do about it? Get yourself a UPS, otherwise known as an Uninterruptible Power Supply. These wonderful devices will keep your computer and router going whilst the ‘rest of the world’ falls apart without electricity. Of course, if you have a laptop you’re fine as they are designed to be standalone, but eventually you’ll need to charge that up too and without power to your router you won’t be getting any emails or Internet access. A UPS is simple to set up and doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but it can be priceless. Not only will it enable you to keep using your computer, accessing emails and getting online, but it will also protect your computer from unexpected (and potentially damaging) shutdowns that occur during a power cut. While it’s good to shut your computer down regularly to give it a rest, it’s more important to shut it down properly. It’s never good when a computer crashes or indeed just loses power. Instant shut

Billingshurst Scout Leaders urgently needed
B
illingshurst Scouts are a thriving group with many young people including Luke – an enthusiastic member of the 1st Billingshurst (Parbrook) Pack – who enjoy a balanced programme of activities. We would not be able to do this with out our volunteer Leaders who help the Scout Group to provide fun and friendship and everyday adventure to over 130 young people, and this is why we are writing to the Village Tweet. We find ourselves in desperate need of Leaders, especially for our two Scout Sections which meet on Mondays and Fridays and cater for young people aged 101/2 to 14
years. Our website tells you more: www.parbrook.wordpress.com Volunteering helps to improve our communities. It is rewarding and can be incredible fun as well! The Scout Association is where it starts for many people, who benefit from personal development, a sense of achievement, training and support. If you feel this could be for you and could help in any section please volunteer to help us! Glyn Pullen Group Scout Leader gsl@1stbillingshurst.org.uk (01403) 784744

Parish Council cares for Billingshurst’s Open Spaces & Environment Billingshurst Parish Council is taking the lead responsibility for Open Spaces and Environment in the Billingshurst Community Led Plan. The Open Spaces and Environment topic encompasses planning, housing, flooding, drainage, open spaces and play areas, protecting and conserving Billingshurst and its general facilities.

Planning Policy
Flooding Lead
Billingshurst Parish Council has worked tirelessly on behalf of its parishioners in response to planning applications and strategic development consultations. For more information on Horsham District Council’s Horsham District Planning Framework (HDPF) and to read the Parish Council’s statement, see HDC’s website: www.horsham.gov.uk/planningpolicy/planningpolicy/horsham-district-planning-framework-examination/ representors-documents In response to the Planning Inspector’s question, ‘Should land to the east of the village be allocated for housing in addition to the permitted development?’ the Parish Council said, ‘No. It would contradict the conclusion of the Sustainability Appraisal on the distribution of housing development, which points to a focus of major economic and housing growth in the Gatwick Diamond. It would give rise to landscape, heritage and ecological harm. There is no evidence of an unmet housing need that would justify setting aside these development principles or tolerating the demonstrable harm.’
Cllr. Lesley Wilding is the Council’s lead on flooding issues in Billingshurst. She leads the Billingshurst Action Group, which is a group of residents and businesses that have been affected by flooding in the village. It is so important that all episodes of flooding are recorded to help build a bigger picture. If you have been affected by flooding, please contact Cllr. Wilding by email on Lesley.wilding@billingshurst.gov.uk The Parish Council is in the process of making its first application to WSCC’s grant scheme Operation Watershed to obtain funding to check all sites from the Bowling Alley to Billingshurst High Street together with the ditch area at the rear of Broomfield Drive and provide a report and specification for works required to alleviate flooding issues in these areas. The Parish Council has been instrumental in bringing together Horsham District Council, West Sussex County Council and the Environment Agency to meet regularly and work together to address Billingshurst’s flooding problems.
Thinking of making a change to your property? Read our Parish Design Statement first for guidance on the design and materials of the buildings, lay-out of facilities, landscaping and infrastructure. See the Parish Council website: http://www.billingshurst.gov.uk/ Billingshurs-Parish-Council/planning-5599.aspx
Billingshurst Parish Council mentioned Recording Garden Wildlife in the National Planning Press Under the Localism Act 2011, communities are being encouraged to prepare Neighbourhood Plans. A Neighbourhood Plan is a community led framework for guiding the future development and growth of an area. Until the uncertainty in the strategic planning direction for the Horsham district is settled through the adoption of the HDPF, which is anticipated in the spring, Billingshurst Parish Council has deferred making a decision on a Neighbourhood Plan for Billingshurst. This decision has been picked up by the National Planning Press and was reported by Planning Resource in October. The Parish Council is waiting to see how much weight the Planning Inspector places on Neighbourhood Plans as part of the Planning Framework.
It is vital for conservation that we know and record local wildlife to see how they and their habitats are faring in the face of increasing change and development. You can help record this information through Sussex Wildlife Trust’s website www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk To provide a useful wildlife record: • What – What have you seen and how many? Do you have a photo? • Who – Who took the record in case more details are required. • When – Day, month, year • Where – Be specific, 6 figure grid reference or post code. Good Wishes to all for a peaceful, happy and prosperous Christmas and New Year.
