elcome to the February ‘Valentine’s Day’ issue of Village Tweet. We have several articles on a Valentines theme, including this month’s recipe. Make 14th February a day to remember for your loved one! Although, so far, we have been lucky with the weather this winter, as I write this temperatures have begun to fall. Winter driving is something we Brits have relatively little experience at. On page 34 we have a Winter Driving Survival Guide with many useful tips should we have another bleak winter. Take care out there. Heart Melts

So called because they would melt everyone’s heart. Why not whip up a batch for Valentine’s Day?

METHOD

1. Cream together the butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy. 2. Beat in the egg yolk and orange extract. 3. Sift the flour and salt into the mixture, then add the chocolate chips and raisins and mix until they are thoroughly combined. The mixture should be quite firm. 4. For the cinnamon coating, mix together the caster sugar and cinnamon in a shallow dish. Scoop out walnut-sized pieces of the cookie dough, roll them into balls, and then roll them into the cinnamon mixture to cover. 5. Place the cookies on a greased baking sheet, spaced well apart. You might need two baking sheets if you make the full amount. 6. Bake for 12-15 minutes. Leave to cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes, and then use a palette knife to transfer the cookies to wire racks to cool completely. 7. Pop the cooled cookies into a gift bag or decorative jar and your Valentine gift is all wrapped up.

INGREDIENTS

For the cookies 225g/8oz butter (slightly softened) 140g/5oz caster sugar 1 egg yolk (lightly beaten) 2 tsp orange extract 280g/10oz plain flour 75g/3oz plain chocolate chips or chunks 75g/3oz raisins Pinch of salt For the coating 11/2 tbsp caster sugar 11/2 tbsp cinnamon

The Food of Love

t this time of year the sales of chocolate and oysters go way up. But do aphrodisiacs really work? Is the way to a man’s heart really through his stomach? Many old wives’ tales abound about food and love, and some of those tales actually have a grain of truth! Oysters have long had a romantic reputation. It turns out they are a good source of zinc, which is vital for the production of those hormones responsible for our libido! If you don’t like oysters, try cheese, pumpkin seeds, peanuts or lamb, which all have high zinc levels. Chocolate, especially dark, is also high in zinc. But in addition, it increases the amount of serotonin in the brain, inducing relaxation, as well as other hormones that increase pleasure impulses and

re eceptiveness. No wonder we feel good after eating so ome! Other foods that have be een found to contain or re elease those all important fe eel good chemicals are su ushi, pomegranate juice, re ed wine, caviar, soy (tofu) an nd honey. So it looks like the ideal meal for wooing your fa avourite person would be oyysters, lamb, sushi or tofu, with pumpkin pie for de essert! Not forgetting the ch hocolate and cheese for niibbles, and a nice red wine or pomegranate juice to o wash it all down! Of course you can’t make someone fall in love with you just by feeding them the right foods, but you may enhance already good feelings, and who knows what might happen from there? Rita Williams-Hall

Sugar Solutions What to use instead of the white stuff

M

ost of us are well aware of the need to limit the amount of sugar we consume, but a little sweetness is occasionally required! Best then to use more natural, nutrientrich products than refined white sugar, such as chopped banana, pear or berries or a spoon of honey (local or Manuka) or maple syrup on cereals. Similar could be added when cooking tart fruit or you may wish to try Xylitol, an increasingly popular natural sweetener that can also be used in baking and jam making. Xylitol, recommended by Diabetes UK, has been extracted from the bark of birch trees since the 1940s, when sugar was in short supply. Found naturally in many fruits, it looks and tastes as sweet as sugar but has 40% fewer calories and, with a low glycaemic index (GI), has far less impact on blood glucose levels than sugar, and even honey and maple syrup. It inhibits yeast so cannot be used in bread making and will not promote Candida overgrowth (the organism responsible for thrush). There is evidence that bacteria do not feed on it so it won’t cause tooth decay. Large quantities may have a laxative effect on some so introduce it gradually. It is toxic to dogs so must never be fed to them. It is available in some supermarkets and online. High Fructose Corn Syrup, HFCS, is increasingly being added to drinks and processed foods, instead of sugar. Fructose is the main sugar in fruit but there is some concern that when it is refined or ‘isolated’ it is not so good for us. It is metabolised by the liver and converted into fat more easily than any other form of sugar. Similarly, Agave Syrup, made from a Mexican cactus, may not be as good for us as first thought, but it does have a low GI.

The safety of artificial sweeteners is still controversial but hopefully more research will be forthcoming. Websites such as www.medicinenet.com are useful references. Stevia, a plant long used as a sweetener in South America and Japan, in their cola drinks, and recommended by the American Diabetic Association, is not approved for sale in EU countries! It is clear that deciding on sugar substitutes is not easy. It will be a personal choice based on taste, state of health and the latest reliable research. My advice is to check they are as natural and unrefined as possible. Try to use a variety, in moderation. Cutting down is always the best option as it reduces cravings, retrains your palate and improves your health. Picture a food pyramid, representing a balanced diet, with the healthy whole grains and vegetables at the base, supporting the other food groups and sweet treats, the tiny pinnacle at the top! Take 5! Five simple ways to improve your health packing your groceries into cupboards into an exercise routine; those tins can double as weights. Stretch while watching TV.

Convenience Yourself: Make healthy meals and snacks. Plan your meals ahead to save running out of beneficial foods. Fill your fridge with wholesome snacks ready to reach for when needed. Stock up on fruit, veg, nuts and seeds.

Change Your Lifestyle: Diets are all very well but they don’t work for everyone. Change your lifestyle instead. This is a more permanent solution than a short-term diet. Join an exercise class for extra incentive. Think of it as a commitment to a healthy life.

Inconvenience Yourself: Don’t buy any junk food then you can’t be tempted to eat it. Walk everywhere you can. If you commute, stop a little further away from work and walk the rest of the way. Walk up escalators. Don’t take the lift, climb the stairs.

Don’t Give Up: If you slip back into your old ways, don’t beat yourself up. Think about why it happened, take steps to deal with the cause differently in future and move forward. Suki North

Snoring Causes and cures

G

etting a good night’s sleep can be difficult at the best of times, especially when you’re juggling running a house with work, hobbies and other commitments. If you live with a snorer, it can be even worse. Spouses of snorers can be a very sleep-deprived bunch! But snoring is not just annoying; it can also be an indicator of underlying health problems. Here we take a look at the most common causes and cures for snoring, and hopefully lead you toward a more peaceful sleep. One of the most common reasons for snoring is overeating and/or lack of exercise. Just a few extra pounds can lead to a build up of fatty tissue around the throat, narrowing the airways and making it more difficult to breathe well while you are sleeping. This tends to affect men more than women, but if you carry a little excess weight, lose it and you’ll probably cure the snoring, as well as improving your general health. Indulging in a glass or two of a favourite tipple is the way many of us choose to unwind after a busy day. However, the relaxing effect we seek can also be the cause of snoring, because alcohol relaxes the muscles in your airways, causing them to go floppy. Sleeping tablets or other sedative medicines can have the same effect. If you find you snore after drinking, try not to drink just before bedtime. Leave four hours or

so to allow your body to absorb and process the alcohol. If it’s medication which is the problem, ask your GP if there is a non-sedative version available. Smoking, allergies, stuffiness and mouth breathing are all common causes of snoring. Smoke from cigarettes irritates the lining of the nasal passages and throat, causing swelling and catarrh. This reduces the airflow. Simple allergies to dust mites or feather pillows can have the same affect. When you have a cold, your nose may be blocked, which leads to mouth breathing. Mouth breathing means the air that would normally pass gently over your soft palate hits the back of your throat directly, causing vibrations and snoring. Try steam inhalation, or nasal strips to clear and widen your nasal passages. If you smoke, giving up or even just cutting down will have a multitude of benefits, not just on the snoring! Finally, snoring may be caused by a medical condition called sleep apnoea. This is a condition where you momentarily stop breathing during your sleep, before waking with a loud snort or snore. You may suffer without knowing. If you find yourself unusually tired, irritable, and suffering from morning headaches, or if your partner notices you are snoring heavily punctuated by gaps of silence, consult your GP for a check up. Beekeeping Beginners Day

T

he Wisborough Green Division of the West Sussex Beekeepers Association are holding a Beekeeping Beginners Day on Saturday 18th February at Pulborough Village Hall. This is the seventh year of this popular event that is one of the largest beginners courses in the country. Many attendees have been recommended by others who have previously attended, many coming from some distance away. This highly regarded course has been designed and will be presented by experienced beekeepers who teach at the large well equipped Wisborough Green teaching apiary. This has been at the same location for over 45 years and the experience gained from teaching a large number of beginners has helped in developing the course. It will suit those who have no experience of beekeeping, but would like to investigate this absorbing hobby that is fast growing in popularity. It is also suitable for those who have some experience, and may have kept bees for a short time. Many people have always wanted to keep bees but need to know more. How much time will it take? How

16

much will it cost? Is my garden suitable? How much do I need to know? All these usual questions will be answered without having to make any commitment. For those who think they will be able to manage there will be follow up sessions at the teaching apiary in the active season. These will be under the supervision of experienced beekeepers with protective equipment provided. Amongst the subjects covered will be how to start, information sources, teaching facilities, siting beehives, equipment required, what bees collect, the bees’ life cycle, and much, much, more. Contact Roger Patterson (01403) 790637, 07976 306492, roger-patterson@btconnect.com for course details, or Gordon Allan (01798) 343470, petworthgordon@ btopenworld.com to book. The Wisborough Green Division is the largest in West Sussex BKA and covers a wide area. Information will be available for surrounding beekeeping associations. Details of this friendly group can be found on www.wgbka.org.uk where you can find further details of the Beginners Day on the Events page. Roger Patterson Photo: Grahame Pearson

Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative

W

e have a very exciting year ahead building on the progress that we have made around the village over the last two years since we formed our community initiative. We have three areas within the village that we are now looking to improve for the benefit of our community. The area around the telephone box is now virtually complete (see photos). Over the coming year we will be keeping an eye on this area to ensure it always looks neat and tidy as this area is a centrepiece for the village. Our North Hall woodland area will undergo some radical improvements over the coming months. We have again started clearing some of the neglected overgrown woodland to allow the regeneration of the hazel coppice. This will be ongoing for the next couple of months. While this work is carried out, we will be building more dead hedges, log piles, insect hotels and generally improving the habitat for the benefit of all wildlife. We will be adding to our now established orchard by planting another twelve apple trees of differing varieties to ensure we have a good mixture of dessert and cooking apples to provide fruit over the whole season. We would like to thank The Billingshurst Lions who very kindly donated the money to allow us to purchase these trees which we understand is their project nationally to plant three million trees. Hopefully, at the end of this season we will be harvesting our very own apples from the trees planted in 2010. In the natural woodland area we will be making many improvements to the habitat again by planting many more native shrubs and trees such as Wild Service tree, Wayfaring tree, Guelder Rose,

Spindle and Field Maple. In the autumn we will be sowing our own wild flower meadow among the apple trees, this will greatly enhance the area and will attract many insects. Our more formal garden area between Station Road and Willetts Way will undergo a transformation during the early spring months. This will be the time when we put our Big Lottery Grant to use. Our plans are to create an attractive seating area with a serpentine sleeper wall around a York stone paved area. We will encompass into this some raised bedding which will be used to encourage children to grow herbs and salad crops as well as some flowers to make the area look attractive. Once these major works are completed, we will be looking to develop the Photos: Graham Moore rest of the garden area to encourage young families to visit the area and to use it for picnics and as a general meeting place. Once this area has been developed, we plan to hold an opening event and to invite all of the immediate neighbours and families from the village to raise awareness of this area. As you can see, we have a lot planned for 2012. We will always welcome new people to join us. You can spend as little or as much time as you wish. We have regular planned work parties on Saturday afternoons or Sunday mornings. If you would like to become involved please contact Graham Moore on (01403) 751722 or email ginamoore@btopenworld.com. Solar PV panels continue to represent one of the safest and most lucrative tax free investment opportunities available in the UK today. You can reduce the cost of your electricity bill and earn a tax free, index linked return on your investment.

S

olar PV is a renewable energy system which uses cells to convert sunlight into electricity. Solar panels are simple to install and there are many different options available to suit your requirements. Solar PV doesn’t necessarily need direct sunlight to work and will still generate power on cloudy days. Just a few of the key factors are given below: The government’s Feed-in Tariff pays you for every kWh (unit of electricity) you create whether you use it or whether it goes back into the grid. You will save on your electricity bill. Your payments are tax free and RPI linked for 25 years. And you will be using your own clean, renewable energy. With our new 2012 pricing you can earn more than a 10% return on investment if you have a suitably Southerly facing roof, East, South or West.

Act before April 2012 to ensure you benefit from the current generous Feed-in Tariff.

Garden Tweet!

Garden View Sexy Rexy or Buxom Beauty?

T

he snowdrops maybe in full bloom right now, but as February marks the month of love, there is another flower which cannot go unmentioned. This is of course the rose. Roses have been the symbol of love for hundreds of years, and where would our florists be without them? Come to think of it, where would men be without them? We’d have to make a decision as to which single flower to purchase, to show our affection to our intended. Roses had a great ‘boom’ period in the 60’s where homeowners and councils alike, removed geometric shapes from their lawns, creating island beds filled with roses. Equally spaced and pruned accurately, these hardy, woody shrubs lived on for years and examples of these schemes can still be witnessed. Associated with bare soil, manure, flat caps and the dreaded ‘P’ word (pruning), these woody and often stumpy plants, with their short-lived blooms in vile colours, would eventually be seen off with a white talcum powder like coating of powdery mildew by late summer … I really don’t understand why they ever went out of fashion! Well thankfully those days are gone, and I reckon it’s about time our roses made a 21st

century comeback. Just as dahlias did a few years ago, I think roses deserve a second chance. Some of the modern roses with great pest and disease resistance and an instinct for repeat flowering, have been bred with the old fashioned sweet smelling types to make wonderful garden plants. In addition, there are roses for every situation, from pergolas and pots, to hedges and even partially shaded walls. They look great planted in a mixed border, especially when underplanted with a free-flowering hardy geranium. It’s not too late to buy your bare root roses, but act quickly, as ideally they need to be in the ground before the end of the month. Soak the roots in a bucket of water for around 30 minutes, while you dig a very generous hole about 40cm deep and 30cm wide. Incorporate well rotted manure or compost into the planting hole and plant slightly deeper than you would normally, so the graft (knuckle) is under the ground. Back fill with soil and firm well. Don’t prune until next month. And as for the variety you choose, be it Rosa ‘Sexy Rexy’, ‘Buxom Beauty’, or one of the more sophisticated named cultivars, be sure to go for a repeat flowerer with great scent. My favourite rose of the moment is ‘Gertrude Jekyll’. Until next time, happy Valentine’s Day! It’s a dog’s life… Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …

M

agnus had just gone into the Advanced Class at Emma’s Dog School in Storrington. He surprised himself and Mum at just how well he did, even doing the ‘Drop on Recall’ quickly. Next morning Mum told Sally how well he’d done and even had a little boast about his going into the Advanced Class. Later on that day Magnus did something very naughty. He chased Jasper the cat. Usually Jasper did not bother with Magnus but today he ran and Magnus ran after him. “Stop!” yelled Mum but Magnus did not stop. He chased Jasper under the hedge before he stopped. Mum was not pleased. “Magnus, come.” she said in a firm voice. Magnus knew he was in trouble, and Mum was cross with him. He didn’t come, he didn’t run away either; he sort of dithered about. “Magnus, come here!” Mum repeated in a louder and firmer voice. Now Magnus knew he was in BIG trouble and dithered even more, coming a bit and then moving away again. By this time Mum was very cross. Just then Sally came by. “I thought he was doing so well at Dog School,” she remarked laughingly, “bit of a waste of time.” Mum was embarrassed and exasperated by now but she had learned something at Dog School too. She changed her

voice to a pleasant voice and told Magnus to come. He happily trotted over and she patted him on the head, and said “Good boy.” Then they went inside for a while. Later that very same afternoon, Mum was taking Bailey and Magnus down the farm’s long drive for a walk. Magnus was ahead busily sniffing all the good hedgerow smells: George the Jack Russell here, Foxy Loxy there, rabbits around the paddock and James Edward, the big ginger cat, at the end of the fence. Bailey was not far behind, always keeping a guarding eye on Mum. She was a German Shepherd after all. Suddenly around the corner came Anne in the big silver car. She didn’t see Magnus because he was so little. Mum waved her hand for her to stop, but Anne just slowed. Mum called urgently “Magnus!” and used her hand signal for him to get down. Immediately Magnus got down. Mum ran over and scooped him up. Fortunately Anne stopped too because she had seen Mum. “Oh I am sorry,” said Anne, “I didn’t see him.” “Never mind,” said Mum proudly, “going to Dog School has paid off,” and she gave Magnus a big cuddle before putting him down again. Anne continued on down the drive and the dogs and Mum ambled happily back to the little farm near Billingshurst. Yvonne Fleece Photo: Grahame Pearson

Save time and money

W

inter is traditioonally the most expensive time in the horse owner ’s year, and with the current financial crisis many are looking to save money. Time is alsso precious too with many equestrians trying to juggle work and family commitments as well as fittinng in quality time with theirr horse. Here are a few tips that will hopefully save on both of the above! Rota. If you are on a DIY liivery yard, try to draw up a rota for turning out and bringing in, not only willl you gain a couple of precious liie-inns but there will be savings on petrol too! Fill as many hay nets as you possiblyy can when you have a litttle more time, you will be surprised at the difference this will make to your daily routine when you can grab a full net rather than struggle to fill one up when you are in a hurry! Bedding alternatives. Consider rubber matting. While it is quitte a big innvestment at the start it will save you money in the long run with reduced bedding costs, and you will save in tim me, as the smalller amount of bedding required is less tim me consuming to muck out. Also look at your mucking out technique and tools, the last thing you want to do is to throw away considerable amounts of clean bedding! Invest in good qualitty tools; they willl last a liffetime and do a good job. There are a great many bedding materials on the market today that are easy to work with and in turn speed up the muckinng our process. Turning out. Turn horses out whenever possiblee, you willl save money on bedding and time on mucking out. Invest in good rugs and look after them – fixing a small tear sooner rather than laater can be very cost effective as it will save the extra expense of replacinng a rug that has gone beyond an economical repair. Make sure there is a fieldd shelter for the horses to use in the worst of the weather. If you can cope with a muddy, hairy beast this may be a good option for busy owners. Sharing. Consider finding a competent sharer. There are usually many non-owner riders looking to ridde a horse or pony but are unable to commit the time or financial backing to own their own. Such an arrangement should include financiaal contributions towards the upkeep of the horse, as well as yard duties to help the owner who is short of time. Look at the BHS (British Horse Society) website if you are thinking of going down this route, as it provides a great deal of advice as well as draft contracts, so that both parties know exactly what is expected of them. I would also recommend that a reference is sought for any potential sharer. Feed and bedding. Buy feed, hay and bedding in bulk if you can store it successfullyy. There are often great dealss on bulk loads and they can be delivered directly to the yard, saving you time and money on multiplee journeys to the merchants store.

32

Feeding programme. Look at your feeding regime. Many leisure horses work less during the winter months and you may find that a die et of forage plus either a balancer or vitamin n and mineral supplement or lick is perfectlyy sufficient for your horse, as well as being better for its waistlin ne, not forgetting your pocket. When to or not to shoe your horse? Consider whether your horse would be a suitable candidate for having hiss shoes removed over the winter months. He will still need to see the farrier every 6-8 weeks for a foot trim, but this would be a huge saving against a set of shoes. Chat to your farrier who willl know your horse’s feet and be able to advise you further. Supplements. If you use a supplement, look at buying the larger sizes. You can save valuable pennies per day by purchasin ng a larger tub than the more usual month’s supply. Ask yourself or seek responsible advice from your feedstore whether you reallly need the supplement – are you using it for a specific problem or just because everyone else on your yard is using is? Good organisation. Organise vet, farrier, saddler, physio, etc., call outs witth other owners if possible. You will save money on fees as the callout charge can be shared. Get ready for the winter chills. Lag any exposed pipework and keep a few contain ners in a frost-proof place, so you have water available to fill your buckets if we do have another big freeze. Hopefully some of these tips will be helpful and ry you are fin nding this winter a little easier than the le d past ones. And remember – now Chrisstmas d y, sa ha and New Year have now passed, we are , k ly ge now on our way to spring. ac pp illa t e , u Jeanette Coleman. SQP, Qualified ol n s ct V lac o Horse Adviser. Book reviews / Community

A Good Read Februaryʼs selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Knowledge of Angels – Jill Paton Walsh Jill Paton Walsh is an extraordinarily versatile writer. Many will know her for her numerous works for children, and more recently for her work continuing the legacy of Dorothy L Sayers’ Peter Wimsey novels. In addition to this, she has written a number of intriguing and thought provoking novels for adults, and Knowledge of Angels is an excellent example of these two characteristics. The story is set on a Mediterranean island in the 15th century, described in almost cinematic detail in the opening pages, as Paton Walsh invites us to contemplate the nature of fiction and storytelling. To this closed community come two strangers – one from the outside, a castaway found by local fishermen, and one from within, a girl seemingly raised by wolves in the forests of the island. One is as eloquent as the other is savage, but their fates become irretrievably tied together as their stories progress. At the heart of the book lie a number of questions of belief. Palinor, the castaway, professes to have no religion, which poses a challenge to the authority of the Inquisition on the island. Amara, the wolf child, seems unredeemably animal in her behaviour, but begins to grow under the care of the nuns of Sant Clara, raising the issue of nature and nurture. Both of their stories are also about love, and selfknowledge, and what is and is not possible. Yet the book is written in such a way that these weighty questions are explored at the same time as creating a page-turning thoroughly engrossing story, in which the reader is drawn in turn into the

lives of Amara and Palinor. Disturbing, sensitive and deeply affecting, this is a book that will keep you thinking for a very long time. Stormbreaker – Anthony Horowitz The first novel in Horowitz’s phenomenally successful Alex Rider series, this is a must for fans of action, adventure and James Bond-style one liners. Alex Rider is a seemingly ordinary 14-year-old boy. However, when his uncle is killed in a car accident, his world begins to unravel. An orphan, Alex finds that without the protection of his guardian he is in the hands of his uncle’s employers – and they are not a bank, but MI6! Horowitz keeps the reader moving quickly from action sequence to action sequence, with a liberal amount of humour and contemporary references along the way. The structure is familiar to Bond fans, and once you have suspended your disbelief at the idea of a teenage spy, it all becomes gripping and plausible. In particular, the gadgets Alex uses and the villainous Herod Sayle will appeal to teenage readers – while the intriguingly sinister character of Yassen Gregorovitch is introduced here, ready to be developed further through the rest of the series. Ideal for fans of ripping yarns and reluctant readers alike, you will find that one chapter is never enough, as Horowitz is the master of the cliff-hanger ending. A 12-year-old of my acquaintance told me recently that this book is ‘even better than the film’ – if you know any 12year-olds, then you will know that I need not say any more than that! Kath Bennett

The Weather Outside is Frightful But what if you have places to go?

O

ne Boxing Day morning several years ago, I made a mad dash to a neighbouring town to hunt through the sales for a Christmas present I’d forgotten. I was low on fuel, but couldn’t find a service station open so decided to risk it. I ended up on the hard shoulder of the motorway. The police officer who came to my aid admonished me. “Donʼt you realise how dangerous it is to head out in these conditions not fully prepared?” So, how can we best prepare for winter driving? The first and most obvious thing is to conduct regular maintenance checks on our vehicle. Ensuring that the oil, water, tyres, lights, battery, wipers, screen wash and brakes are all topped up and in good working order can help avoid breakdown or accident. And don’t forget to keep an eye on fuel levels too! In addition, it is a good idea to kit the car out with a basic winter survival kit – see panel on right. So what else can you do once behind the wheel to increase your chances of safe winter driving? Whether facing snow, ice, rain, fog or wind, the advice is basically the same: stay alert, slow down and keep your distance. Remember to look ahead as you drive. For example, watch for early signs of ice – does the road ahead glisten, and does the steering feel suddenly light? Drive more slowly than usual, and make sure you accelerate, steer and brake gently to reduce the risk of skidding. Apply the two-second rule, (time the gap between your vehicle and the one in front) to give yourself more stopping time. In addition, it is important to see and be seen, so use dipped headlights in rain, snow or fog, and keep the air-conditioning or demister on to keep your windows clear. If, however, you do find yourself in a skid

34

despite your best efforts, it is important not to panic. Your instinct may be to brake and steer out of trouble, but the best plan is to take your foot off the brake, step on the clutch, and steer in the direction of the skid. To do this, look where you want your vehicle to go and steer towards that spot, being careful not to over steer. Although the advice we often receive these days is to stay at home when the weather is bad, we all know that sometimes this is unavoidable. In addition to following the advice above, before setting out on any journey let your family or friends know where you are going, what route you plan on taking and what time you expect to arrive. Allow yourself extra travel time, keep the radio on for regular weather or road reports, and don’t forget to clear snow and ice from windows, mirrors and the roof before you set off. Be a Driver Survivor

Most people spend many hours in their car each week, but none of us expects to have to live in it! Yet in the face of a major incident or in the event of a breakdown, you could be forced to rely on your car for short term shelter and survival. With a properly equipped car emergency kit, you could survive in your vehicle for days if necessary. If you get in trouble, studies show that you’re most likely to survive if you stay with your vehicle rather than venture out looking for help. But if you do decide to leave your vehicle, only do so if the weather clears and you have proper protective clothing. In addition, make sure the vehicle is parked well off the road and leave a note indicating what has happened, where you have gone, and how you are.

Community / Private Hire

PAD Site at Kirdford Village Hall Kirdford’s Quick Responders

L

ast year Kirdford Village Stores put out a plea to raise funds for the housing of a Public Access Defibrillator Unit. Time is of the essence should you be the victim of a stroke or heart attack, as the sooner you get medical help, the higher your chances of survival. Being a rural community obviously makes all of us a little more vulnerable as emergency services will naturally take longer to reach us because of the distances involved. There are one or two defibrillators in the general area, but they are only accessible during working hours. So when the village was kindly offered a free 24/7 defibrillator (worth £2,500) if the residents could muster up the cost of the housing it was obviously a mission worth pursuing! This kind offer came from Mark Osborne, a resident of Kirdford, and also Team Leader of the Petworth Area First Responders! The call went out by email to everyone on the shop’s network and in a matter of 24 hours more than half of the money needed was raised (some £850 plus VAT, delivery and installation). With a collection tin in the shop the rest was raised within a week or so! A fabulously quick response from this amazing little community for a cause that was obviously close to people’s hearts! In addition, the campaign also recruited three more volunteers for the local First

Responders team too! The unit has now been installed at Kirdford Village Hall, as this is central to the village with good parking, and Kirdford Parish Council have kindly agreed to cover the operational costs of the unit. It has been registered with the Ambulance Service, and is now operational! If a call goes into the Ambulance Service stating that you have a life threatening Medical Emergency like Breathing Difficulties or Chest Pains they will call in a Community First Responder and get a front line ambulance crew on the way, at the same time they will then direct you to the nearest PUBLIC ACCESS DEFRIBILLATOR (PAD) unit, and you will be given a pass code to access the defibrillator and you will then be talked through treatment until the Community Responder or Paramedics arrive. So now the community can rest a little easier knowing that help is a lot closer to hand! Our very special thanks to Mark Osborne, Team Leader of the Petworth & District Community First Responders, Kirdford Parish Council, and the residents of Kirdford! Sue Ransley

Bigger Fish Music seeks talented bands for festival

B

igger Fish Music are seeking talented bands for the Loxwood Beer & Music Festival. Taking place on 26th May 2012, the festival will once again be a feast of musical talent. Ray Merridew and Mark Bridger from Bigger Fish Music will again be handling all the bands and are on the lookout for up and coming talent from around the area. They have already signed up a new young band from the Billingshurst area, plus a more established band from the Worthing/Brighton area that have their second album out in the early part of 2012. “We’re keeping them under wraps at the minute as we want to PR the whole line up once it’s fixed,” said Ray.

Mark added, “We’re probably looking for another six bands, so anyone who is interested should contact us with some details about their band and ideally a demo CD or some dates where we can watch them live.” “The Festival is a charity event in aid of Loxwood Pre-School,” said Ray, “but it’s a chance for bands to showcase their talents and play in front of what is usually a large, enthusiastic crowd.” If you are interested in playing at the festival, contact Ray on 07788 639222. A Walk in the Woods John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

know that this is a month out of date but it must be told … New Years Day. Bodies full to the brim with all the goodies from Christmas Eve to now, so a walk in the woods seemed a good idea. The plan. Careful thought went into the route to be taken and a check on the weather was studied, then ignored. We would venture up the bridleway at the end of one of the fields and skirt the forestry where felling had been going on for the last twelve months. Then over the stream that cuts through the woods via the rickety bridge and onwards to the Onslow for a little refresher before starting the return journey. From there a quiet walk along the canal and back home along a back lane. A walk of a couple of hours to ease the results of six days of over indulgence. So, Dee, her sister and I set forth. The first part was delightful. Overcast but not too cold and we even found a couple of primroses on the outskirts of the wood. Then the track started to get very muddy. The horses had cut the surface up and walking became a lot harder as the glutinous clay clung to every step. So it was with some relief when we came to a separate pathway down through an area of ancient woodland that we had never tried before. It would cut a corner off the route and the way was dry and leaf strewn. We descended for some fifty yards or so pausing to look over a huge Badgers’ sett that we encountered.along the way. It was a very old sett with many entrances scattered around, several fronted by mounds of fresh dug soil to show that it was still a place of residence. Lovely to find such a place in such seclusion. Onward we went with the sound of cascading water getting louder in our ears. At last we came to the source. A long stream flowing through the base of the valley but with the rains of the last few days it was no longer a little trickle. It had become a full torrent of brown crashing flood water overflowing the deep ditches sides and forcing us to walk much higher up the steep

40

banking than we would have liked. After some minutes of pushing through the holly and brambles that decked these higher levels we ran out of room. Our way was barred by a high deer fence circling a field on the higher side and the stream bending to the right and cutting off our forward pathway. It looked as if a backtrack would have to be made. As a last look-see we descended to the stream level and studied the broad bend that it had negotiated in making this last turn. In an area just after its initial turn the stream had divided into two. The first part solid with leaves and mud and the second a gap of some three feet of raging water. Perhaps jumpable? I gingerly placed one wellie on the mass of leaves and mud. It felt fairly solid. Then, moving my point of balance to this leg, I started to move the other one forward. Sister-in-law was impatient. Sister-in-law was not familiar with streams and leaf and branch dams. Sister-in-law strode past … her first foot held firm, her second didn’t. It disappeared below leaf level and up to her thigh level. With graceful abandon and a startled shriek, she started to topple forward. Gallantly she pushed out an arm to brace herself against the approaching leafy surface. That too disappeared below, allowing her face to make kissing acquaintance with the squelching gluttonous mud that rose from the depths. It took several minutes to retrieve her. It might have been quicker but once we were sure that she was not in mortal danger we did pause to take pictures on my phone. Credit to her, she did erupt into peals of laughter, but that may have been just relief at being able to still breath. So the walk ended. Well, there was still the couple of miles or so that we had already covered to backtrack over, accompanied by the squelching of soggy socks and trousers in soggy wellies. Still, it was something we shall recall for many years to come, and the brandy and hot log fire on our return seemed to help somewhat too. Amazing what enjoyment you can get out of an afternoon stroll. John Nash Photo: Tracy Lee Carroll (flickr)

Free, fun bike rides are breezing into Horsham district Local volunteers get together to increase cycling opportunities for women

H

annah Miller is a busy Event Manager for charity Access Sport and commutes to East London from Billingshurst to work and is finding time to help other women in the Horsham District get involved in bike riding. Hannah is a local Breeze champion which means she’s been trained by British Cycling to take out group rides. Hannah will be joined by fellow Breeze champion Siobhan Hawes who is a student at Collyers in Horsham and a cycling instructor for Horsham’s youth cycling club. Hannah says, “Breeze bike rides are fun, local and free bike rides just for women. Far more men than women ride bikes and I really wanted to volunteer to help change that. Riding a bike is easy; it’s fun and great for fitness too. Breeze was launched as part of a British Cycling initiative to get more women cycling following a drop of 35,000 women cyclists over the past few years. Funded by Sport England the initiative aims to introduce 80,000 more women to cycling, converting 20,000 of them into regular cycling. Hannah and Siobhan have set up a Breeze network and aim to offer bike rides across the

Horsham District including Horsham, Southwater, Billingshurst, Shipley, Loxwood and surrounding villages. Rides will be held regularly and are in small groups and all rides take in a cafĂŠ stop and chat. The cycling will vary from off-road trails like the Downs Link and tow paths to quiet country lanes. All women wanting to join us must simply register at www.breezebikerides.com as spaces are limited. Siobhan adds, “If you’re interested and haven’t got a bike or would like some training we can help put you in touch with bike hire and support. I’d encourage women to get in touch and remember the fun of bike riding!â€? Hannah and Siobhan held their first Breeze ride on the Sunday 18th December at Southwater Country Park cafĂŠ for a leisurely ride on the Downs Link which was a great success. Dates for our next rides are 29th January, 5th February, 18th February and 3rd March. For routes and to register please visit www.breezebikerides.com. What NOT to buy HER for Valentine’s Day

I

n the film What Women Want, Mel Gibson plays a man with the incredible ability to read women’s minds and is able to say, do and give them exactly what they want. If only it were that simple‌ On Valentine’s Day, a woman does NOT want to be treated like your mother, brother, cook or cleaner. So coming home with a pair of bed socks because she complained once of cold feet, is not night wear she’ll warm to. Presenting her with tickets for the match will not score you points (unless she’s a die-hard footie fan, in which case do your worst), nor will the latest gadget to speed up housework. No woman wants new baking tins for Valentine’s Day either. Diamond ring –

Yes! Flan ring – No! Free slimming club membership might seem like a good idea, especially if she moans constantly about her weight, but anything that hints she is looking fat or old will go down like a lead balloon. You might be safe with flowers, chocolates or perfume, but NOT if they are cheap! She can tell the difference between a £3.99 bunch of petrol station chrysanthemums and a £30 bouquet of red roses from a proper florist even if you can’t. And a ring from Claire’s Accessories that turns green by Easter is definitely a no-go area! Good luck as you aim for the impossible – to discover what women really want! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

What NOT to buy HIM for Valentine’s Day

W

hether it’s for Christmas, his birthday, your anniversary or Valentine’s Day, the problem remains the same. What do you get the man in your life? So why not simplify things by considering what NOT to buy! You might be tempted to shower him with the latest power tools, but unless he is a skilled DIY fan this could spell disaster. Let him loose with anything that drills, screws, saws or hammers and the result could be gaping holes to rival the Grand Canyon, and curtain poles that look like ski runs. His six-pack might have reduced to a half pack, but is free gym membership really the answer? Once a man gets home, the only exercise he is interested in takes place within six feet of the television and involves just one part of the body – the index finger. A book might seem like a good idea, but what man is actually interested in reading? You could get him one with lots of pictures, but the type he’d like might not be suitable with kids around.

And finally, as a guy’s manhood is a very sensitive area, any products, pills or potions promising to improve performance, enhance appearance or enlarge proportions, should definitely be given the thumbs down. Good luck – and happy shopping! Debbie SinghBhatti
