t’s February, that lovely month when our thoughts turn to that date, exactly halfway through the month, the 14th: St Valentine’s Day. Read all about what makes this day specal on page 22. And if you’re stuck for ideas for a gift for your loved one we have a few ideas on page 24. Or maybe make some special Valentine’s Fudge (page 7)? Younger readers aren’t left out and can have fun with some Valentine’s puzzles on page 42. Later in the month, if you’ve burnt off the calories from all that fudge, it’s Pancake Day on the 28th. We all know how to make pancakes but page 28 (appropriately) has some historical facts about Pancake Day. Grahame

Fudge A tasty treat for your Valentine… as long as you don’t eat it first!

METHOD

1. Line a tin about 23 x 23cm / 9" x 9" with greaseproof paper. Melt the butter, sugar, syrup and cream in a medium-sized, high-sided heavy-based pan. Keep stirring until the sugar has dissolved. 2. Bring to a simmer (without stirring) over a mediumlow heat and cook, stirring only occasionally until it reaches 116°C*, stirring more regularly after it reaches 100°C* and turning down the heat if it begins to catch. 3. Take off the heat and beat in the vanilla and salt with a wooden spoon, then continue beating until the fudge has thickened and lost its shine. Add any ingredients such as raisins, chopped nuts, or chocolate chips at this point. Pour into the tin and leave to set. 4. Once it’s firmed up a little, after about an hour, slice into squares and leave to cool. Best kept refrigerated. *If you don’t have a cooking thermometer have a bowl of iced water and a metal spoon ready next to the cooker. As the mixture begins to simmer beat it more regularly then periodically take ¼-½ tsp of the fudge mixture and plunge the coated spoon into the bowl of iced water. Then (still under the water) use your fingers to roll the mixture into a little ball. When it forms a soft, pliable ball it’s ready to take off the heat and continue with the recipe.

INGREDIENTS 100g butter 550g light muscovado sugar, or Demerara for a lighter flavour. 200g golden syrup 350ml double cream 1 tsp vanilla extract ¼-½ tsp sea salt flakes

Future of Billingshurst Wine Circle in doubt…

A

t the 38th AGM of the Billingshurst & District Wine and Beer Circle in November, despite a very successful year, the Chairman warned that unless a Vice Chairman is found by April 2017, the future of the Club looked doubtful beyond July 2018. New Committee members are urgently needed as most of the Committee have served many years, and some have been on the Committee virtually from its inception. Despite this bleak pronouncement, the Chairman went on to report on recent activities including a beer tasting in September with Bunny and Gary Lucas from Kissingate Brewery who gave a very informative and amusing talk on their brewery. During the evening we learnt that hops are relatives of the cannabis family, so it is possibly advisable not to breathe in too deeply when opening a sack of hops! October saw a first for the club when Mike Bransden gave an interesting talk and tasting on cider. Julie Gumbrell took over the Chairmanship of the Circle at the AGM in November. After the business side of the AGM we were treated to an excellent talk and tastings on South African wines by one of our

resident wine gurus, Mike Dobson. Our year concluded with the Christmas dinner – excellent as always – and special thanks to SASU (Scout Active Support Unit) who give up their time to serve the dinner and wash-up which is always very much appreciated by the club. The 2017 programme commenced with a talk and tasting of Wines from Unusual Countries by Colin Nicholson of Hennings. It was great to see Colin back again as he is always an entertaining speaker. The club is always looking for new members, but especially now as it would be a great shame if the Circle did have to be wound up just as it was getting into its prime! The Circle usually meets on the 2nd Friday of each month (except August) in St Gabriels Hall, East Street, at 8pm, though February’s meeting is on the 3rd. Please see our website for details: www.billingshurstwineandbeercircle.com. Marilyn Ambrose Photos: The Christmas Dinner was well attended and ran smoothly thanks to helpers from SASU

Italian Market comes to Billingshurst on 12th February for its 5th year

F

ebruary of every year brings the Italian Market to Billingshurst and 2017 is no exception. On Sunday 12th February 2017 our Italian Friends will once again bring their stalls to Billingshurst; the first visit of the year to the Horsham towns, offering fresh Italian produce of the highest quality. They will be setting up in the Library car-park and be open from 9.30am until everyone goes home! So many things can be associated with Italy such as fast cars, sunshine and football, but undoubtedly the “Bella Billingshurst!” Once again the Library biggest thing is food. car-park will bring you the Italy’s passion and taste of Italy! love for food is second to none. ‘Italia in Piazza’ the Vintage Car Rally comes later in April (full details next month) but for now, in February, Billingshurst can share this passion and love for food. The Billingshurst Community Partnership, as founders of ‘The Creative Community’, has organised our Italian Friends to bring to you real Italian food, made in Italy, right to our Library car-park. And when we say made in Italy we mean real Italian foods served by real Italians! All the stall holders are Italian and enjoy talking and exchanging recipes with customers so make sure you visit the market when it comes to town.

Lorenzo, the cheese stall man says, “I love sharing my passion of Italian cheeses with my customers and look forward to doing this again in Billingshurst in 2017. I always bring new and exciting cheeses as well as the popular ones and am happy to suggest recipes that would go well with my products.” Please come along and take a look at what Italy really has to offer. The prices are lower than other outlets and markets. In fact they are almost the same price you would expect to pay in Italy, but with no need to take a flight! Just take a stroll down to the village centre on Sunday 12th February and see for yourself! The Community Partnership members are all volunteers. As individuals we receive no benefit from the events we organise and any contributions from the Italian Market go toward financing BilliFest in December 2017. ello again, hoping this finds you all very well. Let’s keep warm everyone. If like me you have your heating on and you may be worrying about the cost of this, get in touch as our Information & Advice service can look at whether you might be entitled to receive more help financially. Silver Dream Racer

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

I

n view of her recent transport acquisition, Nanny had a somewhat ‘bikie’ Christmas. Grandad bought her a set of panniers and some flashing LED front and rear lights. He also treated her to a hi-viz sleevelesss jacket. Ann and Gary gave her a Chartreuse cycle helmet which was adjustable and another hi-viz cycle jacket – were they trying to tell her something?! Mary gave her some new gardening gloves. Gardening be damned, they make perfect cycling gloves! All in all Nanny was now kitted out like a Tour de France competitor. She was now ready to prepare for her first adventure: Going to the Shop. Not too far, not too much traffic, flat road. What could go wrong? Are we ready? Panniers on, check. Lights mounted on bike, check. Lights working, check. Battery turned on, check. (You will remember from last ‘How hard can it be?’ month, dear reader, that this is no ordinary bike but an electric powered velocipede.) The pre-ride checks continued: hi-viz jacket on, check. Magnus’ hi-viz jacket on, check. Magnus in basket, check. Ready to rumble? You bet. Nanny sat on the bike, well, perched – the seat was a bit high – organised her feet, then tentatively pressed the pedal. The pedal-assist motor kicked in launching her on her way – fast! Nanny, startled, gripped the handlebars for dear life, front wheel seriously wobbling, Magnus in basket being flung from side to side, bike keeps going. Still pedalling, Nanny wobbles down the road, Magnus, just about remaining in the basket, perhaps wondering why a dog isn’t bestowed with a cat’s nine lives. First corner negotiated OK, no oncoming traffic. Keep going, pedal steadily, soon get the hang of it, keep going, keep going. Arrive safely at destination. Phew! Nanny, legs shaking, goes into the shop, nonchalantly trying to look the cool cyclist but deflated

when told to take off hi-viz jacket – something to do with health and safety. Shopping completed, returns to bike. Magnus still in basket though looking a little ‘lost’. Nanny gets on bike and starts off, just as wobbly as before. Steady does it now, returning the same way. Pretty OK. Nanny starts to relax. Bad idea… Coming straight towards her is a bus. A small one but a bus nonetheless. They reach the speed bump almost at the same time. Nanny wobbles as she hits the incline but can’t stop. Bus doesn’t either. Nanny swerves to side of road to avoid it. Just skims the footpath edge.(She could almost hear Grandad growling at her for kerbing the tyre!) Only through sheer determination and a modicum of luck does she remain in control of the bike. Sails past bus. “Ha! Easy!” On the home stretch now, through the narrow entrance path, a few more pedal pushes and she was home. Unpacks groceries, has a cup of tea (though a stiff drink briefly tempted!) and a lie down. Eventually legs stop shaking. Obviously some fine tuning was necessary to eliminate the front wheel wobble – surely it can’t be entirely Nanny-induced – and Magnus’ uncomfortable ride. She discovered that Grandad had put the basket straps too close to the centre of the handlebars, so she reinserted them much closer to the hand grips. Sorted. (Magnus enjoyed – if that’s the right word – a better ride next time they went out.) Nanny lowered the seat a teeny weeny bit so that if she had to stop she wouldn’t fall over (into a bus, truck or a pushchair). Hmmm, riding a pedal-assist electric bike needs a whole raft of new skills to learn and practice. But winter is the perfect time – and the long drive on that little farm near Billingshurst the perfect place. Yvonne Fleece

Canal Trust upgrades canoeing & kayaking facilities

C

anoeing and kayaking on the Wey & Arun Canal has been made easier with the installation of two new landing stages. Inexperienced paddlers in particular will now find the waterway at Loxwood in West Sussex more accessible. The stages have been built using a generous grant from Canoe England, which is part of British Canoeing, the national governing body for paddlesports in the UK. They are next to the Drungewick slipway and near Drungewick Lock, at the southern limit for navigation on the canal to the east of Loxwood village. The new facilities were installed by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT), which welcomes canoeists, kayakers and paddleboarders by arrangement on navigable sections of the canal in West Sussex and Surrey. Trust volunteer engineer Brian King collaborated with Canoe England to design the landing stages, which are made of oak with stainless steel fixings and an anti-slip surface. Brian is now working with Canoe England to select other sites for upgraded landing stages to further improve the experience for paddlers. “The canal is for everyone who enjoys the countryside and we are keen for canoeists, kayakers and paddleboarders to use our restored sections in West Sussex and Surrey,” said WACT chairman Sally Schupke. “As well as the Loxwood

section, more than a mile of canal on the Summit Level between Alfold and Dunsfold in Surrey will soon be available and we welcome paddlers who want to have a day out there.” Members of Canoe England and British Canoeing can use the canal free of charge, but must notify the Trust when they intend to visit. Others can purchase an annual licence for £15 or a day licence at £5 online via the boat licences page at www.weyarun.org. Group rates are available for organisations such as the scouts and sea cadets. All visits must be arranged in advance to avoid congestion, and all paddlers must book in at the Canal Centre, off Loxwood High Street before setting out on the waterway. Another upgrade on the canal at Loxwood has been the replacement of the balance beams which open the gates at Baldwins Knob Lock. The lock was restored for navigation in 1993 and its gates have been used continually for boat trips for 23 years. The four beams were reaching the end of their lifespan, with the start of internal rot found during a survey. Specialist carpenters installed new beams, which are currently unpainted as the wood seasons in place. Rob Searle, Press and Publications Officer www.weyandarun.co.uk

Book reviews / About the house

A Good Read February’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Reconstructing Amelia – Kimberly McCreight We all think we know our children. We think we understand what makes them tick and we like to think that they would turn to us if they were in trouble. But do we really know what is going on in their lives? Kate certainly thought she knew about her 15-year-old daughter, Amelia. As a young law student Kate found herself pregnant and saw the chance to have the one thing she had always wanted: love. And so, she raised Amelia (with the help of a nanny), qualified as a lawyer and became successful in her career. She appears to have everything. A comfortable home in a desirable part of Brooklyn, and a place at Grace Hall prep school for Amelia: the perfect life. Of course, perfection is fragile, and it doesn’t take much to bring Kate’s world tumbling down. She receives a phone call from the principle at Grace Hall. There has been an incident and Amelia is to be suspended for three days. She requests that Kate comes immediately to collect her from school. Dropping everything is not always an option, and public transport can sometimes let you down. Life can let you down far more than you can dare to imagine. She arrives at Grace Hall too late. Too late to collect her daughter; her only child who is now lying on the concrete, covered by a sheet. What could make a normal, happy 15-year-old jump off a building to her death?

20

Alternating narratives draw us into the lives of Kate and Amelia, reconstructing the events that led to Amelia being on the roof of the school. Did she jump? Or is there something darker going on? Do any of us really know our teenagers? The World’s Worst Children – David Walliams The quickest way to get someone to do something is to tell them not to. And as a reader you are certainly warned not to read this book. So of course, any child will pick this book up and do exactly the opposite of this advice. And they will certainly be glad that they did! Ten short stories make up this book, each one telling of the life of a particularly unpleasant child. In many ways it appears to be a straightforward case of morality. The unpleasant children don’t think things through and only behave in a way that they feel will be beneficial to them. Dip into a story at any point, or read the book from start to finish, it is entirely up to you. But be warned. These truly are the world’s worst children! There is Nigel Nit-Boy. He isn’t interested in superheroes, but super-villains and there are none with a super skill like his. Find out what happens when he gets trapped in the Natural History Museum over night. I’ll give you a clue: it isn’t pretty. Perhaps Grubby Gertrude is more your style. Sure, we all get dirty as children – making mud pies, or splashing in puddles. Gertrude takes this to the next level. So dear reader, enter if you dare and read this book… or don’t… the choice is yours.

Valentine’s Day / About the house

Valentine’s Day

A

h, Valentine’s Day. Beloved by couples, greeting cards companies and florists the world over. But why do we give gifts and cards on 14th February? Valentine’s Day actually started as a Christian day to worship Saint Valentine. Valentine was a priest in Rome, who is believed to have been executed on 14th February, almost two thousand years ago. Some historians believe that his crime was performing the marriage of Christian couples. The emperor at the time, Claudias II, was not a fan of the church and had supposedly forbidden people from marrying. It is said that he thought young men would be less prepared to die in battle if they had a wife at home to mourn them. Instead, he encouraged them to take several lovers. Valentine continued to perform marriage ceremonies in secret, but was discovered and sentenced to death. The story goes that Valentine healed the daughter of one of his jailers and, on the day of his execution, left her a note, and signed ‘From your Valentine’. How much of this actually happened, we’ll likely never know. St Valentine’s Day started to be associated with love around the 14th Century, when the idea of romantic love gained popularity. Geoffrey Chaucer referred to Valentine’s Day in The Parliament of Fowls, as a day when birds would

meet their mate. A poem by the Duke of Orleans, which he wrote for his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415, is believed to be the oldest surviving Valentine’s Day gift. The Duke wrote: Je suis desja d’amour tanné Ma tres doulce Valentinée (I am already sick of love My very gentle Valentine) However, it wasn’t until many years later that the giving of tokens of love on Valentine’s Day became commonplace. In Victorian times, cards were hand drawn, and hand cut. They would have been quite expensive, so were cherished and many still survive today. While 14th February is the most popular date for St Valentine’s Day, the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates it on 6th July. Other cultures and countries have different festivals to celebrate love. Columbia, for example, has Dia de Amor y Amistad (Love and Friendship Day) on 20th September. Unlike Valentine’s Day, Dia de Amor y Amistad isn’t just about romantic love, however. People might invite friends over for dinner, and give small gifts to family members. Whether you’re celebrating with a loved one, heading out with friends, or doing your best to ignore the day altogether, we wish you a happy Valentine’s Day. Kate Duggan

Designing your perfect kitchen Ockley-based Park House Kitchens has been designing and installing beautiful kitchens in the local area since 1991. What makes them so successful? First class customer service and a product that stands the test of time. With so much choice out there, it’s difficult to know where to start when it comes to new kitchens, but with Park House Kitchens you can be assured you’ll receive the first rate service you expect and a high quality, stylish kitchen perfect for your home. Established in 1991 by Trish Rowland, the idea was to create and build a kitchen design business that would offer a customer service that was second to none. Twenty five years later the business is still going strong with Emily, Trish’s daughter, now at the helm, designing beautiful kitchens in the Surrey and West Sussex areas. “Being a small, family business we’re able to offer our clients our full attention. From start to finish they will be working with my mum or I, who will have designed their kitchen using a CAD planning software.” Explains Emily. “And we also share with our clients a day-by-day schedule so that they know exactly what’s happening and when, so they can feel confident that the completion date will be adhered to.” When undertaking substantial building work to your home, whether it’s a new kitchen or an extension, it’s important to know who exactly will be working in your home and whether their skills really are up to the job. “Our expert team of trusted tradesmen have been working for us for over 15 years. They work to the high standard that we promise and ensure that your home is treated with respect. We also have our own builder, who is excellent, and we always recommend using him if you wish to tie in an extension or other building work with your new kitchen.” There is a large range of beautiful styles to choose from at Park House Kitchens, from classic shaker units to the contemporary German look, or anything in between. All the units are built to measure and can be hand painted to the colour you desire. So in years to come you can freshen up the look with a new colour if you so wish. And with their finger on the pulse of the latest trends and styles, you can be rest assured that Emily and Trish will deliver you a kitchen with a look that has been intelligently designed for your home and lifestyle. “At Park House Kitchens we are able to offer a more personal touch.” Says Emily. “You won’t be dealing with a kitchen sales person, it will be either my mum or I, and we’re passionate about what we do and we want to deliver the service we promise and you expect.” Eighty percent of their business comes through recommendations from past customers, which is testament to the level of service Emily, Trish and their team offer.

Pancake Day / About the house

Pancake Day Shrove Tuesday: 28th February

M

ore traditionally known as Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day is the Christian feast day before Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent. Lent is a time of sacrifice, so Pancake Day historically was the perfect time to use up ingredients such as eggs and fats which are intrinsic to pancakes. Historically Christians went to Church on Shrove Tuesday to seek absolution, otherwise known as shriving for their sins. So Shrove is taken from the word Shrive. A bell would ring to call people to confession and this became known as the Pancake or Shriven Bell. The date of Shrove Tuesday varies because it occurs 47 days before Easter Sunday which also alters year on year based on cycles of the moon. In the UK there are various traditions associated with this day in addition to the eating of pancakes such as Pancake Races… One of the most famous races takes place in Olney in Buckinghamshire where is it believed the idea of the contest originated. It is said to be based on the story of a local woman who, while she was making pancakes, heard the Shriven Bell and ran to church still wearing her apron and tossing her pancake in a frying pan to prevent it from burning. For this reason in Olney, racers

BUILDING & ROOFING LTD.

must be local housewives or men dressed as such and wear an apron and a hat or scarf. During the 415-yard race they have to toss their hot pancake at least three times and the winner has to serve their pancake to the bell ringer and be kissed by him. Other variations of the race include the one held at Westminster School, where the cook tosses a huge pancake over a five-metre bar in the playground and boys try to catch the largest piece in order to get a cash prize from the Dean. From the twelfth century onwards, Shrove Tuesday Football Games were played out in the streets and often referred to as mob football. Nowadays only a few games take place as highways legislation has prohibited playing football on the road since 1835. In Scarborough on Shrove Tuesday, it is customary for a large skipping rope to be in place and for up to ten people to be skipping at a time. In some other countries, this date is known as Mardi Gras and is marked by carnivals. These are still linked to the concept of celebrating the last day of ‘fat eating’ or ‘gorging’ before the commencement of Lent. The French translation of Mardi Gras is Fat Tuesday. Fishers Farm Targeted Again! At around midnight on Tuesday 3rd January 2017, thieves broke in to the family-run attraction, Fishers Adventure Farm Park in Wisborough Green. After the huge £40k burglary in January last year, staff at the attraction were shocked to hear that it had happened again only a year later, theives stealing a £3,000 trailer. A commotion was heard by a staff member onsite, but the thieves got away. Gerald Dewey (pictured, left) who was on night security duty, fell on the ice in pursuit of the thieves. Smashing two teeth and splitting his lip, he attended A&E and received ten stitches to his upper lip. Luckily no animals were harmed during the burglary. Tim Rollings, Owner of Fishers commented, “After the last break in we introduced serious security measures and it is devastating to be targeted again. The burglars accessed the farm from the B2133 this time. We are already in discussion with our security firm on improved measures. It seems that expensive chains and padlocks are no longer effective”. If anyone has any information about this break-in, or have seen a £3k trailer for sale at a suspiciously low price, please contact Sussex Police (just dial 101). Your call will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Traffic Training

T

here is no getting away from the fact that traffic is part and parcel of everyday life, more so now many bridleways are intersected by roads and fields are disappearing under concrete. It is up to us as horse owners to desensitize our horses to traffic as much as possible to help us stay safe when hacking on roads. A good place to start getting a horse used to traffic is to turn out in a field next to a busy road; it goes without saying that the fencing must be very secure and preferably have an electric fence on the inside of the main boundary. Horses soon settle and get used to the noise and movement of the traffic. If possible use a vehicle to take feed to your horse, leave the engine running and even sound the horn if you have no near neighbours. My own horses will come running to the sound of the car horn signalling feed time! When riding out on roads for the first time arrange to go with a horse and rider that are used to traffic; the nervous or inexperienced horse will gain confidence from the school master and feel more secure in company. Large vehicles and farm machinery can cause many horses to become nervous; consider keeping your horse on a working farm for a while to get him used to tractors and other machinery. Some riding clubs put on traffic training days and these are well worth attending to help you and your horse gain confidence. When meeting large vehicles on the road try to find somewhere suitable to move out of the way such as a lay-by or drive. Once the vehicle has passed encourage your horse to follow it – I ask mine to trot on as if ‘chasing’ the vehicle while giving lots of praise. Bicycles can also be frightening for some horses due to their silent approach, if you spot a cyclist call out and speak to them, this reassures the horse. Having a friend cycling with you while you hack can help your horse gain lots of confidence around bicycles. Many cyclists don’t understand how reactive a horse can be and some are as scared of the horse as the horse is scared of them! Communication is the key. Check out cycle club websites too so you can

avoid being caught up in cycling events while hacking out. We as riders have a responsibility to ourselves and our horses as safe as possible when hacking on the roads. Always wear hi-viz clothing preferably with reflective strips; studies have shown that you will be seen three seconds sooner, it doesn’t sound much but it really can make all the difference and give enough time for driver to slow down. Always wear a properly fitted and up-tostandard riding hat and consider wearing a body protector as well. Another item becoming more popular is a hat cam – similar to a dash cam in a car, the camera attaches to a rider’s hat and films what is going on. The footage can be extremely helpful in case of any incidents Never use your mobile phone while riding; your attention should be on the road and on your horse, not on a phone call or text. Don’t ride more than two abreast and always move into single file on bends and over the brow of a hill. Try not to ride out during busy times such as rush hour or during school runs and I tend to avoid bin collection day too! Always ride on the left side of the road, even when turning right – don’t go into the middle of the road until it’s clear for you to cross. Don’t ride out in poor or fading light and avoid roads if there is a heavy frost and danger of ice. Use clear hand signals to convey to drivers what you intend to do, or what you would like them to do. Always put out your arm to tell other road users you are turning left or right, ask drivers to slow down by raising and lowering your right arm, and if you need them to stop, hold your palm up towards them. Remember to thank considerate drivers with either a wave or a smile, politeness goes a long way and can encourage people to slow down for the next horse and rider. Hopefully you will have happy and safe hacking and lots of fun with your horse. Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Compost angst!

H

ome-made compost is a thing of wonder… when all goes well! But too often it goes horribly wrong and instead of rich, sweet, crumbly stuff we end up with a putrefying heap. For a long time I believed making great compost was beyond me. There are so many methods and myths, it all seemed too complicated. Well good news… it isn’t! Compost containers. You can make your own. It’s very easy apparently, using old floorboards, posts and wire netting. Unfortunately I am to DIY what elephants are to hang gliding so I opt for ready made bins. Check with your council as many offer cheap bins to encourage recycling. If not, garden centres stock a good variety. Size matters! A container should be 3ft / 1m square minimum, preferably larger. This allows heat to build up inside the heap which aids the decay process. Position it out of the main line of sight, behind a shed or some tall plants. Compost materials. • Fruit and veg scraps • Coffee grounds and tea bags • Old flowers and bedding plants • Garden clippings • Annual weeds • Crushed egg shells

• Small animal bedding (e.g. rabbit) • Shredded cardboard, including tubes • Egg cartons • Lawn mowings You can’t use: • Food waste (bread, meat, etc.) • Cat and dog faeces • Evergreen leaves • Thick rooted perennial weeds How to make compost. I’ve tried several methods, including my late grandfather’s which involved careful layers of various ingredients and sprinkling on lime at intervals. It worked, but I’m a lazy gardener really and can’t be bothered with all the faff. This my method, worked out through a combination of trial and error (lots of error!): • Mix all material together so there is no concentration of any one sort • Firm it all down, • Moisten it • Cover it with some old carpet to keep heat in and prevent evaporation If you start the process now, by autumn you’ll be digging in your very own wonderful compost, dragged from the bottom of your heap. You’ll have done your bit for recycling and, best of all… it’s free! Rachel Leverton

On Friday 17th February 2017 the Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative will be holding an illustrated talk and social evening at North Hall meeting at 7pm for a 7.30 start for the Talk. The illustrated talk will be given by our

Local Bee Keeper, Judy Knight, who has many years’ experience in beekeeping and produces prize winning honey. Judy will be taking us through a year in the life of a Bee Hive. This is a fascinating subject that is very relevant to all of us who garden or are interested in nature. We will be providing light refreshments during the evening as well as a licensed bar selling real ale, wine and soft drinks. The cost of the tickets, to include refreshments, will be only £2 per person, as this is purely a social evening for the village not a fund raising event. If you would like to come along, please contact Graham or Gina Moore on (01403) 751722 or email ginamoore@btopenworld.com This event is a social event, not just for members of the LCGI, but also to give everybody in the village a chance to get together in a convivial environment.

Pruning John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

N

ow that we are in the heart of winter, fruit farmers and gardeners all over the country will be busy pruning and training their bushes and trees ready for the new season. To the fruitman this is by far one of the most important jobs he has to do – get it wrong and it can take some considerable time to put right again. They will all tell you, THE though, that despite the fact that they are having to work at times through some terrible weather, this is the MASSACRE job that they love the most. Truth is, if you don’t enjoy pruning, don’t become a fruit grower. A third of your working year will be spent carrying out this task and for a lot of that time you may be completely on your own in the cold and wet. On our orchards alone we had over fifteen thousand trees to attend to every winter. However, I have many memories from over the years where events have occurred while doing this job that have caused both greatly enjoyable and rather frightening experiences. Let me elaborate… When I first started in fruit growing all the trees were huge beasts that required ladders to prune and pick. These ladders were triangular three-legged lumps of wood that weighed a ton and in the winter months the rungs would become lethal as ice from boots or wellies froze onto them. In those days some of the girls who worked in the packing sheds would come out to give me a hand in the orchards after Christmas when the apples had all been sold. Joining us also would be the farm’s four rams. These belligerent gents were given the run of the orchards to clear the windfalls and also keep them away from their wives now that the tupping season had passed. They were still in aggressive mode though and frequent fighting between them could be heard from a long way off as heads as hard as iron clashed together. Thankfully, on the whole with us, they were placid enough, although a butt from one of them on the odd occasion would bring a curse to the lips and a large bruise to the impact area. For some unknown reason they took umbrage on the aforementioned girls joining me and I enjoyed many a time as they chased the screaming ladies round their ladders until they were forced to seek refuge up them, where, clinging onto the higher rungs, they first pleaded and then with more threatening language, required me to “do something”. In later years we planted trees in tight rows that took on the appearance of a hedge-like structure, with all the tops within easy reach from ground level.

This was made possible by tying down the lower branches when the trees were young so that growth could be slowed and a good shape constructed. As a result the area around the tree was booby trapped with tethering strings. So you would be deep in thought as you snipped away until a careless step would leave you flailing helplessly as you headed southward. No matter how often we did this we never seemed to learn and, laying there in the mud we would peer hopefully around to see if anyone else had noticed. Peels of laughter always signified the affirmative. My one horrific memory of pruning dates back some fifty or more years ago. I was pruning a particularly large Bramley which I was trying to get down to a more sensible level and had ascended to the top of the ladder to reach a branch that had decided to reach for the sky. (I should explain here that this pre-dated anything as sensible as Health and Safety). I had a small chainsaw in one hand and with the other I clutched any available branch I could reach to hold myself steady. I lifted the saw up to commence cutting and as I did, the saw’s cutting chain came into contact with a long thin twig. Now… any of you who have used such a saw will know that if there’s one thing they don’t like it’s stray twigs. They can either cause the chain to come off its guide or whip the saw off at an angle. The chain picked up the twig and running straight up it caught the threads of my coat and buried itself into my shoulder and stuck there, the engine gently ticking over. With one hand clinging to the ladder and the other holding the handle of the saw I was unable to reach the off switch, and the blade was tangled in my clothing too much to remove. I very slowly descended the rungs trying desperately not to touch the trigger of the machine and wondering what damage had occurred to my shoulder. Once down, it was untangled from my coat and sweater and damage assessment inspected. Thankfully it had not penetrated to bone level but exposed ligaments and torn flesh still looked quite decorative. So I went home. No car then so it was a patch up time with sticky tape to pull the gap together and a bandage applied by the wife. Then back to work. They were tough days then! I carry the scar to this day. I still love pruning though; it’s a skill that you must learn and understand to do well, but will give great satisfaction once mastered. I would advise, however, that you adopt a healthy respect for the powered chain saw and the damage it can inflict on the unwary. It hurts, you know. John Nash

Our Community Volunteers – Neale Francis

T

hey say ‘blood will out’ and this certainly seems to be the case for Neale Francis, Vice-Chairman (and former Chairman) of the Barnes Green Players, who appeared as both director and actor in their annual pantomime in January (featured in December’s Village Tweet). When asked how long he has been involved with the Players, he replies, “Oh, since I was about ten.” It transpires that his father, David Francis, was also heavily involved in the group (“He always played the baddie,” Neale recalls). The 30-strong group which was originally formed from the village youth club during the Second World War, is a thriving part of the community and plans to stage a cabaret-style Supper Evening in May and a revue in October as well as a summer production for children. Neale’s own experience of acting with the group in his youth and later directing the Players at local and national events, as well as singing in a band, have stood him in good stead for his current role, not to mention his professional skills as an electrician (see page 33). The family connection continues with his brother Julian, who is a carpenter, and both a committee member and set-builder for the Players. David Francis, who has a room in the village hall named after him, was known affectionately as ‘Mr Barns Green’ and was a key figure in setting up

another local community event in 1982, the Barns Green Half Marathon, which is now the largest road race in Sussex, and in which his sons are still involved: Neale as commentator and Julian as a committee member. In 2016 for the first time there was also the opportunity to run 10K which meant that there were two separate races running simultaneously with different finishing lines, and despite fears that having two races would detract from the main event, there were around 1,000 participants. Any profits made from either event are ploughed straight back into the village, to other groups or initiatives. Neale is clear about why he spends his time on these events; he concedes that he is gregarious and loves being a part of the community where he grew up. “Barns Green has such a community spirit and the more things we do together as a village the greater that spirit becomes.” Barns Green Players are hosting an Open Evening to find more members on 7th February. For further details, please contact Neale on 07880 707585.
