elcome to the January issue of Village Tweet. At this time of year thoughts inevitably turn to the dreaded New Year’s Resolutions. Traditionally this might be dieting, giving up smoking, starting a diary, etc. However, new Village Tweet writer Rita Williams-Hall has an unusual take on New Year’s Resolutions – read her piece on page 39. A look at this month’s cover photo reminds us how bleak January often is, yet conversely, how breathtakingly beautiful this time of year can be. Wrap up, get outside and enjoy it! Happy New Year! Book reviews
A Good Read A New Year selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Gillespie and I – Jane Harris In 1888, following the death of her aunt, Harriet Baxter visits Glasgow to see the wonders of the International Exhibition. A chance encounter leads to an unlikely connection with the family of struggling artist Ned Gillespie, and sets in motion a chain of events with devastating consequences and far-reaching repercussions. Jane Harris uses Harriet as the narrator of her second novel, a move which allows her to initially intrigue and then repeatedly wrong-foot the reader. Our view of the complex Gillespie family – matriarchal Elspeth, Ned, his put-upon wife Annie, their children Sibyl and Rose – comes entirely through Harriet’s eyes. At first we do not question her perceptions as the relationships unfold and minor crises are dealt with, but then, as events take a more sinister turn, we begin to question her impartiality. Harris has already proved that she is a fine storyteller in her debut, The Observations, and Gillespie and I cements that reputation. She skilfully moves between the novel’s two time periods: Harriet as an elderly lady in 1933, and Harriet as an earnestly helpful friend of the family some 45 years earlier, slowly revealing almost enough information to make us believe we understand. The twists are not over-dramatised, the rug is not pulled from under us, but tugged just enough to make us stumble a little and doubt not only Harriet Baxter, but ourselves. At several points during the novel, it is easy to forget that these characters are fictional, that Harris not Harriet, is the author, and that Ned’s

paintings cannot be seen in galleries, because he did not exist beyond these pages. As the story progresses, you will find yourself reading faster and faster, but then, once you reach the end, wanting to read it all over again. The Lighthouse Keeper Stories – Ronda and David Armitage This is not exactly a new read. The original story of Mr Grinling, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, was first published in 1977, but young readers cannot fail to delight in this charming book. Mr Grinling’s problem is that a bunch of hungry seagulls keep attacking the lunch basket that his wife, a most accomplished cook, sends by means of a rope and pulley from the little white cottage on the cliffs to the lighthouse every day. He tries everything to stop them, even putting poor Hamish the cat in a second basket and winching him across to safeguard the sandwiches – but to no avail. Surely there must be a way to stop the birds sharing his meal? Of course there is, but in the second story in this double volume, a new problem arises – too many delicious lunches mean that Mr Grinling finds himself in a very tight spot. How will he cope when the cakes and chocolates and crisps and sweets all have to go? Ideal for newly confident readers, with a supportive mix of text, pictures and captions, this will be requested again and again. The only problem is – it can leave you feeling rather peckish … Kath Bennett

Stubby Beans The food blog ‘Girl Interrupted Eating’ (http://girlinterruptedeating.wordpress.com), run by Becky, recently reviewed Valentine Warner’s cookbook ‘The Good Table’. This delicious recipe was featured on the blog.
METHOD
1. Soak the beans overnight. 2. Simmer the hocks for one hour. 3. Strip the leaves from the thyme sprigs and fry the onions with the thyme in the lard. 4. When softened add the garlic, mustard powder and cloves, cook for a minute 5. Add the tomatoes and sugar. 6. Add the drained beans to the casserole with the whole hocks (you can leave the skin and fat on or take it off), plus a litre of stock or water. 7. Either cook in the casserole on the hob, simmering for an hour with the lid on, then 30-50 minutes with the lid off, or Becky recommends that you can transfer everything to the slow cooker on high for 4 hours. 8. Strip the hock from the bones, string it and put the meat back in with the beans. (If you kept the fat on, slice it and pop it into a hot oven to crisp it up and eat as a snack or tasty side dish). 9. Season to taste. 10. Serve with cabbage or creamy mashed potatoes. 11. Becky suggests a splash of Worcester sauce to finish.

Step into Health Don’t neglect your feet this winter
F
ootcare should be a priority in winter – the season for hiding them away in boots and sturdy weatherproof shoes. No sunny airing in sandals or barefoot on beaches and paddling in the sea to keep them healthy. We need to check our shoes are fit for purpose. Choose quality over quantity. Leather is best, with flexible soles, good gripping surfaces, cushioned insoles, insulated for warmth and room to wriggle those toes. Apparently the average adult walks the equivalent of more than four times round the world in a lifetime. What percentage of that is Christmas shopping I wonder? After a hard day, soak your weary feet in warm water, with added sea salt or soothing oils. Dry thoroughly with a soft towel, especially between the toes. A spot of tea tree oil helps to prevent fungal problems, like athlete’s foot. File hard skin gently, preferably using a pumice stone in or after a bath. Finish off with a foot file after drying, and apply a foot cream if the heels are particularly dry. Visit a podiatrist for advice if you have any problems. Many foot-problems are self-inflicted. However attractive high heels may be, healthy feet are the real beauty. Pam Ayres’ poem, I wish I’d looked after my teeth, could equally apply to feet, for those who regret having bunions and corns. Reflexology Massaging feet keeps them supple and healthy. Reflexology

offers this and potentially more. Using specific thumb and finger movements, a reflexologist stimulates the pressure points on your feet or hands that they believe reflect various parts of the body, effecting a beneficial physical change. Reflex actually means reflect. It is thought to have originated five thousand years ago in China and was also used by the Ancient Egyptians. Reflexology was introduced in the west by an American doctor, William Fitzgerald – an ear, nose and throat specialist. In 1917 he published his ideas about interconnecting zones within the body, visualised by ten vertical strips which run the length of the body, with pressure points on the feet, hands, lips, nose and ears. Studies have concluded that reflexology creates relaxation, reduces pain, improves blood flow, aids post-operative recovery, enhances medical care, benefits mental health by reducing depression, complements cancer care and eases pregnancy, delivery and post-partum effects, including post-partum depression. Reflexologists say that it reduces stress by interrupting stress signals and restoring the body’s equilibrium. So this Christmas, step into health. Treat yourself or a loved one to a reflexology session to ease any stress and tension, and make sure your boots are made for walking and your shoes are made for dancing. Sue Blain

Are You Sweet Enough? Type 2 Diabetes – a growing crisis
I
t’s January again, when many of us are feeling more than a little guilty about all the overindulgence. We’re making resolutions to cut-down and shape-up. This article is not exactly good news for cake, biscuits, and chocolate-lovers, but the latest statistics for the growing crisis of Type 2 diabetes, makes far worse reading! Baroness Young, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK, is determined to spread the word as some 2.8 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with it, and an estimated 850,000 more probably have it, but don’t yet know it. All carbohydrates are converted to glucose in the body and our cells use this as their primary source of fuel. Glucose enters our cells using insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes develops when the body does not produce enough insulin to maintain a normal blood glucose level, or when the body is unable to effectively use the insulin that is being produced, resulting in high glucose levels in the blood. The biggest risk factors are: having a family member with the problem, being overweight, especially around the waist, and being over 40 years of age. People of South Asian or African descent are at higher risk at a younger age. These ethnic groups are generally less able to digest lactose (milk sugar). Research is also beginning into the growing evidence of a link between diabetes and milk intolerance. Excess calories are stored as fat, and an accumulation of excess fat around the liver and the pancreas is thought to be a key cause of Type 2 diabetes. Check your own risk score on Diabetes UK’s website, www.diabetes.org.uk. You should consult your GP if you’re already experiencing increased thirst, blurred vision,
tiredness and urinating more than usual. Fortunately, eating less sugar, salt and fat and exercising more regularly will help to reduce the risk. You may need to consider diluting fruit juices and limiting dried fruits, such as figs and raisins, and sweeter fruits like ripe bananas and grapes which, although packed with nutrients, do contain high sugar levels. White bread, pastry and white rice also create a sugar rush compared to the wholegrain version. The New Year is a good time to start making changes. A chromium supplement may help if sugar cravings become a problem. Small regular meals, containing protein with vegetables, and healthy snacks, such as nuts and berries in between meals, will help to stabilise blood glucose levels and stop between-meal hunger pangs. These days it is easier to cut down on fats rather than sugars. When offered sweet treats just decline politely, explaining that you’re sweet enough! Sue Blain, Naturopath

Get a Life‌ ‌Get a Life Coach!
S
everal years ago I was making my way through the supermarket checkout, when a sign on the community notice board caught my eye: ‘A New You For 2002’. Intrigued, I stopped to find out more and ended up signing up for a year’s life coaching. The basic aim of a life coach is to help a person realise their individual potential. Through a series of coaching sessions that usually take place weekly and often over the phone, the coach helps the client assess their current situation, identify changes or improvements they would like to make, and then helps devise strategies, tools and techniques to achieve their goals. Key to the success of this process is the special relationship of trust that develops between the coach and the client. Coaching is offered in confidence and is totally nonjudgmental and impartial. Differing from both counselling and therapy, the emphasis in coaching is not on examining or diagnosing the past, but is more about planning for the future. Rather than focusing on how bad a problem is, the client is encouraged to consider instead the best solution for the problem. The support offered through life coaching is often holistic in nature, and is aimed at helping the individual achieve overall wellbeing by
setting in balance all aspects of their life. For example, they will be encouraged to evaluate their work and home life, health, finances and social life – thus helping them to achieve a fulfilling, successful and stress-free life. The personalised support structure offered by life coaching helps the client deal with human factors like fear, doubt, a loss of stamina, negative thoughts and mental blocks that might otherwise get in the way of them achieving the results they desire. One ‘tool’ that might help change feelings of doubt and fear to ones of confidence and optimism, is the ability to recall happy, positive memories from the past. By engaging in regular coaching sessions, an individual is able to take time out each week to look objectively at their life. Without this discipline, many would not find the time to do it. Similarly, having someone to talk to and plan with each week, helps to keep them focused and motivated. So, take a look at your life as it is today, as it will be in the months and years to come, and if there are things you’d like to change to make your life run better, to realise ambitions, fulfill potential, be happier, less stressed, more profitable, more peaceful, sociable, or fun – maybe life coaching is the way forward for you! No one can see how well you hear!
L
et’s face it – no one wants to be seen wearing a hearing aid. Even though these days you’d be hard pushed to find those hearing aids you remember seeing on your grandparents when you were a child, we all automatically associate that term with those big beige bananas. This means hearing aids are seen as something only for the very elderly, making horrible whistling noises and, in many cases, being something to store in a forgottenabout drawer, rather than being a functional piece of healthcare equipment. Well that’s all about to change because with modern technology “hearing aids” means something completely different. As we all know, technology is constantly evolving and hearing aids are no exception. Most recently manufacturers have been working on the concept of invisible hearing and the results are quite astounding. For example, let’s examine Phonak’s breakthrough hearing aid, Lyric. Designed to be worn 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you can wear Lyric for up to four months at a time. It is placed deep inside your ear canal so you can do everything you normally
would without having to worry about taking it out or replacing any batteries. You wear it while you talk on the phone, listen to music, sleep, exercise and even when you shower. This technology is so revolutionary that only a few centres are able to offer it in the UK. Lyric isn’t your only option for invisible hearing aids either. There are other aids out there which you are able to remove yourself. Whatever your personal situation, there will be an aid suited to your needs. Not being able to hear well is a medical problem just like any other, and is just as simple to rectify. So don’t let negative connotations hold you back. Take control of your health and find a solution that works for you. For more details call South East Hearing Care Centres on 01403 218863 or visit the website www.hearingcarecentres.co.uk

“Get your BODY BACK to normal” What is physical therapy treatment and who needs it?
N
o, this is not an invitation to join another gym or fitness centre and it is not a miracle cure to change the shape of your body. The clue is in the words – Body Back. The body has a lot of work to do during the course of a day and the back is probably one of the most complex and active areas to keep us going. In a sense, the muscles, ligaments and tendons of the body act as ‘guy ropes’ or ‘strainers’ for the skeleton. When they become overly contracted, they pull on the bone where they are attached, causing a misalignment in that area. This can have a ‘domino effect’ throughout the body causing further distortions and consequently aches and pains. Most people during the course of their life suffer from neck, shoulder and back aches and pains and most of these people do very little about it. They simply have a hot bath, rub or spray some heat product on and it disappears for a week only to return after a short while when they have lifted or carried an awkward object, been sitting in an uncomfortable way or enjoyed some gardening. If you really want to ease the aches and pains and understand why you are suffering then physical therapy treatment could be your answer. There are different pressure levels of massage depending on the severity of your symptoms and this is discussed and decided upon during the consultation period at the beginning of the first session. Modern day life is hard on our bodies and the stresses and strains create more tension and anxiety for us regardless of what we do. Clients come for different reasons – office workers who continually sit at their desks, hairdressers who have to lean over their clients, retail shop workers standing all day, people who are doing housework such as ironing and vacuuming, gardening,
decorating even sitting and watching too much television are all just a few examples. Others come for relaxation to de-stress, rebalance and rejuvenate their body and mind. There is no mystery about physical therapy treatment as it has been adopted from techniques used around the world many thousands of years ago to help ease and relax the body and mind. As one of the oldest forms of therapy it assists in relaxing tired muscles to improve health and induce a sense of well-being. Massage therapy is regularly performed in many parts of the Far East, China and India, Middle East and Africa but still not as much as it could be in Continental Europe and the UK. Massage is a completely safe therapy and with regular sessions it will benefit most people of all ages. Many of today’s health problems can benefit from massage therapy because the manipulation of soft tissues affects so many of our bodily systems. Massage therapy treatment will have a therapeutic affect and improve health by acting directly on the muscular, nervous, circulatory and lymphatic (immune) systems. So there is no need to continually suffer from shoulder, back aches and pains because there can be some help for you and it will be worth it in the long term. If you would like to know more details and book an appointment contact Peter Hudson who is a qualified and fully insured therapist and who has a treatment room in a clinic in Horsham. His fees include a free consultation and free simple posture assessment. Peter Hudson MGHT MCMA Associate Email: prhtherapy@btinternet.com Text: 07775 517640 Telephone: 01798 875162

Plumbing Mishaps… Would you know what to do? Frozen Pipes: Turn off the mains water supply. If the frozen pipe has a split, empty the cold water cistern by opening all the cold taps. If the pipe hasn’t split, thaw it out slowly by applying hot water bottles. If any part of the hot water system is frozen or there is a split, turn the central heating off and call a professional. Burst pipe: Turn off the mains water. Open all the cold taps so the pipes and storage system drain quickly, but do not turn on the hot taps. Turn off the central heating, any electric immersion heaters and call a professional. Blocked sink or toilet: If the sink is blocked, unscrew the trap – the U-shaped pipe under the sink (don’t forget to put a bowl underneath to catch any water!) and check. If the blockage isn’t there, or your toilet is blocked, use a plunger that completely covers the outlet. It creates a vacuum to suck and push the blockage away. A chemical dissolver breaks down organic material, clearing the blockage away with little or no mess. Call a professional if the blockage remains. The best way to prevent plumbing

emergencies is to make sure your storage system and exposed pipes are well insulated and have your central heating system serviced annually. Rita Williams Hall Village Tweet’s Top Ten Winter Tips 1. Know where your stopcock is and how to turn it off. 2. Check existing insulation and replace areas showing wear and tear. 3. Fully lag all pipes if possible but especially those in unheated areas such as lofts, garages or gardens. 4. Get advice about insulation thickness from the experts at a DIY store. 5. Isolate and drain outside taps. 6. On very cold days, leave the loft hatch open to allow warm air to circulate and prevent pipes from freezing. 7. If you go away for a few days, ask a friend to visit and keep watch for leaks. 8. If you go away for an extended period, leave your central heating on a low setting. 9. Cold water tanks should be insulated on all sides but not underneath to allow warm air to circulate. 10. Keep the contact details of a reputable plumber to hand.

Respiratory problems in horses
D
uring the winter months horses are often confined to stables for a long period time, therefore it’s not surprising that respiratory problems can occur. Recurrent airway obstruction commonly known as RAO is caused by particles in the horses environment irritating the sensitive mucosal linings of the nasal passages and lungs, the problem is caused by minute particles present in the stable, forage and bedding. Symptoms include a nasal discharge, cough, wheezing at exercise resulting in poor performance, and in severe cases at rest. Often globs of mucus are found around the stable or just outside when the owner checks the horse in the morning. Solutions. Turning sensitive horses out full-time is an ideal solution but not many owners have that option due to restrictions on land that many yards impose, therefore we must take adequate precautions to ensure the stabled horse’s environment is as clean as possible. Adequate ventilation is a must, although we like to wrap our horses up nice and warm and avoid any draughts although there must be and adequate airflow in the building to allow removal of most of the dust and particles. Bedding. Keep the stable free of cobwebs as these attract dust. Also make sure any banks used in the bed are clean and regularly changed to prevent a build up of mould spores. Any bedding used must be dust extracted, with paper or cardboard being the least dusty bedding on the market today. Avoid straw at all costs, shavings and woodchip are very popular but must be kept spotlessly clean. Rubber matting is also becoming increasingly popular due to the fact that only just a small amount of bedding is required. It is very important that drainage is taken into consideration when fitting rubber mats so that urine can drain away and not become trapped beneath the mats causing ammonia to build up. Mats must also be tightly fitted to avoid any liquid can become trapped and to prevent the mat from moving around under the horse’s weight. Deep Litter. Avoid deep litter systems at all costs due to the build up of harmful ammonia which is harsh on nasal passages and lungs as well as being toxic. Also, where horses are housed in livery yards, be aware of what bedding your horse’s neighbours are on; having a horse bedded on straw next door will undermine any clean air regime you are trying to achieve.
32
Feeding. Use haylage as a forage source, or if this is not possible, soak any hay fed for 2030 minutes before feeding to bind the dust and spores to the stem so they are swallowed rather than inhaled by the horse. Steaming is another method of removing dust from forage which is becoming more popular. You can use a large clean dustbin and tip in a kettle of boiling water, or use one of the specific hay steaming devices now on the market. Never feed any forage that smells ‘fusty’ or stale or has any visible patches of mould. For very sensitive horses there are diets that can replace hay which are fed soaked to eliminate all dust. Keep feed bowls and mangers spotlessly clean because harmful mould spores can be present in leftover feed stuck to dirty bowls. If possible, feed hay off the floor, or in a device such as a Hay bar to ensure the horse is feeding as naturally as possible and allowing any mucus present to drain from their nostrils. Exercise. Turn the horse out as much as is possible; the clean air will be of tremendous benefit as will the exercise of moving around the field and having a good run around with the herd! There are also many nutritional products on the market to support horses prone to RAO. Speak to a good company or feed merchant who will be able to advise you and guide you through the products on offer. Finally. Call your vet if your horse’s symptoms have a sudden onset or are severe. They can prescribe drugs called bronchodilators which will help keep airways open and clear and ry make your horse feel much better. But the le d most important part of any treatment is d y, sa ha to ensure the horse has a clean air , k ly ge environment in which to live. ac pp illa t e , u Jeanette Coleman. Gary Holders’s Acoustic Music Clubs
A
love of music is in us all and local bass player, Gary Holder, has established a series of local acoustic music clubs in venues as diverse as a pub, several village halls and a high street shop. Gary’s aim is to give local acoustic musicians many opportunities to perform regularly and have a range of situations within which to work. “For instance, Gary says, “a learner musician might want to get around other more experienced musicians in the type of environment where the pressure to perform brilliantly is off and patience and encouragement are the name of the game. The Copsale Acoustic Club is just such a place. For musicians who prefer a pub setting where there is a bar, an audience and an informal but organised event, the Queens Head Acoustic Club in Barns Green would be ideal. Then there is the more adventurous or seasoned performer who might choose a more formal but friendly concert situation, as can be experienced at Coolham, Findon and Honeywood Lane Acoustic Clubs.
For a more unusual experience, how about performing within a High Street music shop? GJ’s Guitar Emporium in Storrington hosts the Storrington Acoustic Club. Gary goes on to say, “The bottom line with all this is that I have met so many people with a hidden talent in music and I want to provide venues where we can pull together to encourage learning, great musical performing experiences and get entire communities out and about to discover what unknown and fantastic people there are living, quite literally, in some cases, next door. There is a great musical revolution going on and it’s happening in your neighbourhood. No admission fees, Gary is happy to receive donations into his old top hat. For more information on venues visit Gary’s website www.bassistgaryholder.com or contact him directly on tel: (01403) 785674 or email: gary.holder@tiscali.co.uk . Gary Holder Photo: Linda Westmore

W
e’ve all done it: bought something completely unsuitable in the sales because it was such a bargain. But there are real bargains to be had, if we prepare well. Here are our top tips for surviving the sale season. Shop online. Some sales start on Christmas Eve after the shops have closed for the day, meaning you grab some super bargains! Think ahead. There will be a lot of wrapping paper, cards and other gift paraphernalia on sale. Grab it now to save money in the run up to next Christmas. Make a list. Impulse buys are rarely bargains. Take a look around and see what it is you actually need. Note it down, and stick to it!

Take cash, not credit cards. Sales are supposed to save you money, not get you into debt. Remember the interest charged might mean you end up paying far more than the tag price. Be early, or late. The first day is best for the most desirable items, while the last few days are best for the biggest reductions. It’s a bit like buying fruit or veg at a market! Be comfortable. Wear sensible shoes, take a bottle of water, leave the kids at home, and plan your route around the stores. Finally, remember that your consumer rights are exactly the same during sales, so do your bargain hunting with peace of mind! Rita Williams-Hall

School Choir spreads Festive Cheer
R
esidents at The Anchorage Residential Home in Pulborough were given a festive treat when an award-winning school choir performed a Christmas carol concert for them. The 53-strong choir from St Mary’s C of E School in Pulborough – winners of last year’s Spirit FM Xmas Factor competition – sang a selection of Christmas favourites at the Coombelands Lane home. It was the children’s last live performance before they recorded their Xmas Factor competition entry and it proved to be one of the highlights of the year for the delighted residents. Activities Manager, Liz Smith said, “It was
wonderful to hear the children singing with such enthusiasm and our residents certainly enjoyed it immensely.” St Mary’s School headteacher, Alison Heath, added: “The choir has gone from strength to strength and they just love performing in front of a live audience. “They thoroughly enjoyed entertaining the residents and it was the perfect final practice before the competition.” The choir, run by Mrs Heath and supported on the piano by Tony Hancock, will be heading to the O2 Arena in March to take part in the national Young Voices concert. Little Red Riding Hood comes to Barns Green
I
n the idyllic but troubled Pantovia, brought to near ruin by the upstart Count de Cash, the Rumpole family and their neighbours do their best to celebrate young Rosie’s birthday, even if she is dreading her grandmother’s inevitable present of a red riding hood! But the party is spoilt when the awful Count arrives and tries to drag the fair Rosie away to the palace. She is rescued by a brave young visitor and it is love at first sight. Little does she know that he is in fact Prince Rupert, the rightful ruler of the land. But like all good Pantos, there are a few more twists in the tale! Daniella Blanchard (Little Red Riding Hood) and Ross Muncer will need all the help they can get to avoid the Big Bad Wolf
Yes it’s Panto time again! and the Barns Green Players are rehearsing in preparation for another blockbuster of a show. This year’s Pantomime is Little Red Riding Hood and it promises to be even better than last January’s huge success when the Barns Green Players staged King Arthur.
Guitar
On the back of the demand for tickets last year it has been decided that there will be an extra performance on the afternoon of Sunday 15th January. This means there will now be a total of 7 shows performed over two weekends in the Barns Green Village Hall in January. The shows will be on Friday 13th (evening), Saturday 14th (afternoon and evening), Sunday 15th (afternoon), Friday 20th (evening), and Saturday 21st (afternoon and evening). Graeme Muncer is Directing the production and is extremely excited about this year’s production, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, written by Paul Reakes, who also wrote last year’s show. It is full of great jokes, plenty of slapstick and has enormous scope for our talented cast to express themselves and entertain the audience. The shows are aimed at all ages although the afternoon performances are particularly suitable for the very youngest children. There are singalongs and sweets for the kids and opportunities for the audience to join in with the fun. For the evening performances there is a licensed bar serving a variety of alcoholic and soft drinks as well as sweets. If you are regulars at the Barns Green Players Panto you will know just what a good show they put on and if you haven’t been before you are in for a real treat. Nigel Currie Tickets cost just £9 for adults and £7 for children. Box Office; 01403 731566 or visit www.barnsgreenplayers.co.uk

The three best resolutions you can make
A
t the end of the year, most of us tend to take stock and decide to make some changes: lose weight, spend less, stop smoking. The thing is, we are creatures of habit, and it’s difficult to change things, especially when we see them as a sacrifice. So instead of a long list of things that we may never get round to, here are my top three resolutions that you should definitely make. Smile more! It’s amazing how much brighter the world looks when you smile. The more you smile, the more people will smile back at you. Spread a little happiness to be happier. And it’s free! Change one thing. Just one thing might be all you need to make a difference. Drink an extra glass of water daily. Buy blue eye shadow instead of brown. What one thing can you think of that will shake things up? And finally, the most important resolution of all … Don’t make any resolutions! Save
yourself untold stress and just forget about it. When you are ready to make a change, you will do it, no matter what time of year it is. So, keep in mind your general goals: to be healthier, wealthier and wiser, but do it when you’re ready, not when the calendar tells you to. Happy New Year! Rita Williams Hall

In the Bleak Mid-Winter John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
T
he bleakest of months is upon us. The darkness greets us as we rise and surrounds us as we wend our way home at the end of the day’s toil. Even with the promise of warmer winters we still dread that moment when the covers are thrown back and our feet hit the cold surface of the bedroom floor. So what’s to look forward to throughout the few weeks ahead? The orchards are bare and bleak, ditches dark and murky with the blackened remains of autumn’s rubbish and the cold north wind defies any attempt to persuade it to go round you as you walk. The animals of the countryside are still there, but unless you are lucky or a snow fall shows their passing, they seem to follow your lead and hide away from the winter’s grip. The ducks on the reservoir keep their own company during the daylight hours and then gather together as dusk falls and spend the night gently swimming in circles in an effort to keep sufficient water clear of ice to keep them safe from Reynard’s larder. In the darkness they softly chatter to one another as they maintain their task. If they fail and the ice should win … then off they go to seek moving water or larger lakes to keep them safe only to return in the spring in time to commence their noisy squabbles as they settle to the task of rearing their new brood. The woods hold a different spell. If the weather is dry then the drifts of leaves still call for feet to scuff through them, and no matter how old you may be, the desire do so is a compelling refrain of a childhood memory. Among the fallen debris in the clearings and along the banks of the ditches the first promise of the season to come is the delicate green of the first primrose leaf. If the frosts are reluctant to show then in the deepest
40
and most sheltered spots there can often be found the first delicate yellow tipped buds. The sighting of this herald of the spring that hides behind January’s back door is always welcomed by my family and no walk would be complete without a continual search for the first one. That’s not to say that a snow fall is not to be enjoyed … The beauty as it falls and the glistening carpet that smothers all the darkness away on a winter meadow is glorious to see. Branches that stood so stark and bare are now glittering candelabras and even the un-dug garden can no longer taunt me into reaching for my spade. But, oh, the retched stuff when it departs us. Beautiful as it falls, lovely as it lays, and a perishing nightmare as it melts. As an oldie who has seen so many winters pass, I do feel that I am entitled to put forth my own two-penn’orth of gathered knowledge and state one pearl of wisdom that I am sure is an undisputable fact. That is, that the radiator has removed one of the great joys of these bleak months – the open fire. I know, I know, they were the devil to clean up afterwards, and stocking with wood or other fuel is so very expensive now, and the darn things would puff smoke into the room if the wind was in the wrong direction, and the sparks made holes in your best carpets, and they could be a horror to light sometimes, and your legs would take on a rather fetching mottled pattern, and then the dog would lay in front of it and fill the room with the scent of a drying nappy and singed hair. I know, I know. But you have to admit … no chestnuts can ever taste the same as those roasted on an open fire, and how many pictures do you see in the glowing embers of a radiator, and of course , there can be no argument that they make the best toast ever! So, fellow sufferers, lets enjoy the good bits, help the wild creatures where we can, and look forward to the return of the sun’s warmth and all the bounty that it will bring. New Year, New Job Follow Village Tweet’s top job-hunting tips
D
espite the current economic climate, there are still jobs out there, and if you are really determined to find work, you will. Firstly, put yourself on a good job website like www.direct.gov.uk. Register with employment agencies or simply send your CV out on spec. Far more jobs are picked up through personal recommendations than through job ads. Tell people – friends, neighbours, your hairdresser, everyone! – you are looking for work and let them act as your eyes and ears, plus with online networking sites there has never been an easier way of getting your name out there. Make yourself more saleable by increasing your skill set. There are plenty of free courses around and why not consider doing voluntary work? As well as
learning new skills, you will show a potential employer that you are proactive, hardworking and self motivated. Make sure that your CV is up to date and tailor it to suit the skills needed for the job you are applying for. If you need help producing a CV, check out the BBC or the Jobcentre Plus websites for starters. Above all, ensure your CV is concise and free of spelling mistakes. The most important thing is to regard your search for a job as a full time exercise: the job of getting a job if you like. If you put in the necessary time and effort, you will eventually be successful! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Billingshurst Remembrance Parade 13th November 2011
I
n 2011 the Royal British Legion celebrated 90 years of service to the men and women of the armed forces and to their families. During that time the poppy has become the enduring symbol of remembrance. In 2011, 43 members of the British armed forces lost their lives and many others have suffered life-changing injuries. On Sunday 13th November, members of the Billingshurst branch of the Royal British Legion and their many loyal supporters from the local community marched through the village. Remembrance Sunday is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. Remembrance Day and the Two Minute Silence have been observed since the end of the First World War. The Parade formed up in Frenches Mead and marched to the War Memorial, outside St Mary’s Church. Many more locals than usual turned out to greet the procession of Legionaries, Poppy Collectors, and Scout and Guide Association members, as they paraded through the village. The salute to the parade was taken by Colin Banks, President of the local branch of the Royal British Legion, along with his Vice President, Rene Humphreys and Chairman, John Jones, who were joined by Paul Berry, Chairman of the Billingshurst Parish Council. The parade then continued to the Billingshurst Community and Conference Centre, where they held a ‘drum head’ service, with Major (Retired) Mal Weobley as Master of Ceremonies. “It is a tradition going back for centuries that soldiers in

the field, without recourse to their chapels or churches on Sunday, would lay their drums neatly, consecrate them by laying their standards on them, and use them as an altar.” The British public holds great affection and respect for its Armed Forces. The Royal British Legion is the UK’s leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants. They are probably best known as the nation’s custodian of Remembrance and for the Poppy Appeal, which they organise annually. The Poppy Appeal is an opportunity to show support. In 2010 the Poppy Appeal raised £36 million, but that amount is less than half the sum needed by the Royal British Legion to do its work. 2011’s target was £40 million. The Legion spends over one and a half million each week, delivering practical care, advice and support. More than 9 million people are eligible to approach the Royal British Legion for support. It is estimated that there are more than one million veterans living in poverty in Britain today. The Legion’s range of welfare services set up to support those who have served and continue to serve in the British Armed Forces is what the Poppy Appeal is about. Today, with troops on duty around the world, acts of Remembrance, like the one that took place in Billingshurst are as poignant as ever. After a successful year that included such highlights as Honk! New Harmonie, Los Endos, Voodoo Rising, Stephen Foster and Inspector Drake, we’re pleased to report that 2012 will feature some of the same acts and a few new ones, too. Los Endos will return in May, Stephen Foster will perform again in the autumn (Perhaps not quite as blue, apparently!), and Sundial Theatre (who performed Inspector Drake) will be back next November. Los Endos and Sundial both commented upon our facilities, the warmth of their Billingshurst audiences and the acoustics of the Main Hall – Los Endos describe their June show as “the best show we’ve ever performedâ€?‌.Good!
