s I write, I am thankful we have not had a repeat of last winter’s severe floods and power cuts. So far! Even without such calamities, many local people are suffering financial hardship and this is where food banks can help. The charity Horsham Matters, in association with the Trussell Trust, has several centres in the district which are always in need of non-perishable food and hygiene products. Your local centre, which opened recently, is at Billingshurst United Reformed Church and is open every Friday, 10am to 12noon. (Vouchers required.) To find out more about food bank, vouchers, and where to donate call (01403) 211833 or go to www.horshamdistrict.foodbank.org.uk. Spaghetti alle Vongole
Clams are a good buy in January and make a healthy supper with an Italian flavour.
METHOD
1. If using fresh clams tap each one sharply and discard any which stay open. Scrub and add the clams to 2-3 tbsps water in a heavy-bottomed pan. Cover with a lid and cook over a medium heat for 3-4 minutes, or until all the shells have opened. If using fresh clams discard any which have not opened after five minutes. 2. Remove the clam flesh from the shells (leave a few in their shells for garnish) and dip them quickly into their cooking water to rinse off any sand. Strain the juices from the pan through a sheet of kitchen paper and reserve the liquid. 3. Heat the olive oil in a pan over a medium heat. Add the chopped garlic and fry until it begins to turn pale gold, then add the anchovy paste and parsley and stir-fry for 30 seconds. 4. Add the chopped tomatoes and the strained clam juices. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes. 5. Cook the spaghetti according to packet instructions. 6. Just before serving add the clam flesh to the sauce and stir well. Mix the sauce into the cooked spaghetti. Serve garnished with parsley and any remaining clams in their shells.
Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time: 30 minutes. Serves 4
INGREDIENTS 500g/1lb very small fresh clams, or a small jar of clams in brine 3 tbsp olive oil 1-2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 tsp anchovy paste (optional) 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley 400g/14oz canned chopped tomatoes Salt and freshly ground black pepper 450g/1lb dried spaghetti

Weald School named as Highest Performing Sixth Form in the South of England!
S
tudents and staff at The Weald School were are celebrating having been named as one of the highest achieving Sixth Forms in England, according to The Sunday Times newspaper. Every year The Sunday Times publishes a league table of schools using their most recent results from the summer exams. The Weald Sixth Form found itself in 13th place out of over 3,000 schools and colleges in England and Wales. Indeed, with all schools above it either located in London or the North of England, The Weald was the highest performing non-selective Sixth Form in the South of England. Peter Woodman, Headteacher, says, “We were pleasantly surprised to see how well The Weald had performed on a national basis. The reality is that we do not particularly support the idea of league tables as schools can be ranked on so many different criteria. It is often unfair to try and
condense the performance of hundreds of students into a single statistic. In this case, The Sunday Times had ranked schools on the percentage of A Level grades from A* to B. Last year our students gained 70% or more grades in this range. We feel it is more important that each and every student has made progress. This can often mean that as a school we are just as pleased when a student achieves a grade C, if this is above their target grade, as when a student achieves an A*. “It is critical to us that every student here makes progress and this idea of value added is far more important than a league table that simply ranks the schools on attainment. Whilst our attainment was very high, our value added was just as impressive.” Peter Woodman, Headteacher

Book reviews / About the house
A Good Read January’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Kept – DJ Taylor Billed as a Victorian Mystery, this novel by DJ Taylor is a true page turner in the style of Dickens, Wilkie Collins and the like. With multiple narratives and a range of perspectives, Taylor weaves a web of intrigue around the life and death of Mr Henry Ireland and his wife, which surprises and delights the reader. The novel begins with an arresting episode in which two men find themselves by a Scottish loch undergoing a series of challenges to steal rare birds’ eggs. This links them to the strange but eminent naturalist James Dixey, who in turn becomes the guardian of a strangely disturbed young woman. At times the narrative thread is truly puzzling, and the reader must connect and theorize for themselves – but this is no bad thing, and at least we can read on at our own pace rather than having to wait, in the Victorian manner, for the next instalment. There are plenty of potential heroes and heroines, and a smattering of particularly villainous villains, for us to engage with too. One for those dark winter nights in front of the fire – abandon the television and curl up with a good book instead. Although, be warned, you may stay up later than you had intended, reading on to the finish!

Cars and Trucks and Things that Go! – Richard Scarry Millions of children have grown up with picture
books written and illustrated by Richard Scarry. By the time he died in 1994 he’d sold more than 100 million copies around the world. One of the best known is Cars and Trucks and Things that Go! To celebrate its 40th birthday recently, the Designer Paul Smith – a huge Scarry fan himself – was asked to redesign the work while retaining the charm of Scarry’s original drawings. There was also a boxed set which was limited to just 1,000 copies and is already re-selling for hundreds of pounds a copy. While most of us will never get the chance to own the boxed set, the new-look book is well worth seeking out. It has certainly impressed Scarry’s son Huck – also a children’s writer and illustrator –, who said, “Paul Smith and his team have amazed me. It’s Richard Scarry seen with Paul Smith’s eyes.” For those who don’t know the work, every manner of moving machinery is riotously depicted in a story which sees the pig family head to the beach for a picnic. On their journey they encounter every vehicle known, from the forklift to the locomotive, and many vehicles that are not known, from the pumpkin car to the broom-ocycle. Each detailed spread provides the opportunity to make up stories and describe situations. Will Officer Flossy catch Dingo? Will Rollo Rabbit catch his runaway steamroller? And can you find the goldbug on every page?

Billingshurst Primary School wins Travel Plan award
W
ith the arrival of winter the temptation to rely on the car for the school run may seem irresistible, but how many of us stop to consider the environmental impact or the congestion caused around our schools? Billingshurst Primary School’s Travel Committee has been working hard to understand the issues which govern travel choices, to bring about a change in the travel culture of the whole school community. The school has devised an action plan to help overcome barriers which may prevent staff and parents taking the healthy, sustainable choice; inspiring everyone to walk, cycle and car share whenever possible. On 14th November the school was awarded a Travel Mark 3 certificate by the Local Authority in recognition of this work. The assembly was attended by our local councillor Mrs Amanda Jupp, with Pene Mather and Clare Faulkner from West Sussex County Council. The award, bestowed upon a small percentage of schools within the County, pays tribute to the school’s unique Travel Plan, which sought the views of parents and staff and outlines a series of steps to improve the conditions for walking and cycling. As part of this project, the whole school was surveyed on their mode of transport to and from school, to ascertain why people still decided to drive. Interestingly,
the findings highlight the enthusiasm with which the children have embraced the campaign, with up to 39% of children opting to cycle or scoot if given the choice. The impact of the Travel Plan is already being realised. As a fledgling Bike-It school Billingshurst Primary School has seen an increase of 30% of pupils regularly cycling, walking or scooting to school. The school has also benefited from cycle racks and shelters and is now working with the Highways Agency to create proper pathways to improve safety for pedestrians in areas of concern. Helen Williamson, Headteacher, comments, “We are very proud to be presented with this award. The Travel Plan is overseen by a Committee of governors, staff and parents who have all lent their support and greatly enhanced the work of the school community in this area. The campaign has created a host of cross curricular learning opportunities for the children, from undertaking traffic surveys to discussing the effects of pollution.” Kate Clifford on behalf of the BPSCA Photo: Left to right: Clare Faulkner (West Sussex County Council), Clare Edwards (KS1 Assistant Head teacher), Helen Williamson (Head teacher), Councillor Amanda Jupp, Pene Mather (West Sussex County Council) with pupils

Family lands in new village green home
A young family have recently moved to one of the area’s attractive hamlets, enjoying a spot that overlooks the village green at Dial Post. Hailing from a Surrey village just south west of Dorking, the draw of West Sussex quality of life and the picturesque setting of the property gave strong motivation to relocate their family. The property offers scope to personalise the accommodation and the village green with its children’s playground sits opposite one of the area’s finest pub restaurants.
Billingshurst benefits The New Year always brings hope and anticipation of what market conditions we’ll see. In 2014 there was a surge of demand for executive family homes across the district. With talk of recession largely in the rear view mirror, there has been a significant increase in sales agreed to out of area buyers. For the last decade or more, West Sussex has been a popular option for movers from London and the Surrey suburbs seeking an improved lifestyle. On average 30% of transactions over that ten year period have been agreed to purchasers from these areas. In 2014 there was a noticeable spike in demand from outside the county; 60% of our properties selling to this audience. Our focus has always been to concentrate on finding the best buyer for the right property and our marketing is directed around that aim. This means that attentive listening to the requirements of the searching customer, combined with a detailed understanding of the features of the property are an absolute minimum requirement.
01403 780300
s from high demand Our approach of including all photographs and floor plans for no additional cost and paying extra attention to detail has enabled the fantastic results we’ve achieved. There have been numerous examples of sales we have completed where other agents had valued well below the current market level. The style of the property has not been a decisive factor; with successes such as East Street in Billingshurst, an older style property extended to offer additional secondary accommodation, as well as the striking modern home in Barrow Close on Penfold Grange. There were many other examples. So, 2014 was an excellent year for us with numerous sales in RH14 of large family homes in the range of £500,000 to £850,000. We feel confident that demand will again be strong in that range this year. If you are thinking of moving at some stage in the future, we would be pleased to visit you to help provide some background information on the local marketplace.
Perfect period character cottage for cosy winter evenings Nestled in a secluded position hidden in plain sight, is this fine period property. Offering the anticipated character features that those enthusiastic about old houses are looking for; exposed beams, Inglenook fireplaces, latch doors & stone roof. The accommodation is modernised & well maintained. £625,000

Mammoth sale! / About the house
‘Monty’ the Mammoth sold for £189,000!
F
ollowing the article in November’s Village Tweet, readers have been keen to know the outcome of the Summers Place Auction for ‘Monty’ the Mammoth. ‘Monty’, the incredibly rare Woolly Mammoth skeleton complete with tusks sold for £189,000 (including buyer’s premium) to a private buyer in the UK on 26th November. One of the most iconic Ice Age mammals, ‘Monty’ was estimated to fetch £150,000250,000. His impressive size of 3.5 metres tall and 5.5 metres long, suggested he may be a male, weighing around six tonnes when alive, some 30,000-50,000 years ago. The mammoth had been in a private Eastern European collection for many years, and remarkably had only been assembled for the first time when it came to the auction house, so local Village Tweet readers who took the opportunity to view ‘Monty’ prior to the sale
had a rare treat, especially as the auction hall was shared with many other superb natural history lots. Village Tweet’s Editor Grahame Pearson described the experience as being more akin to visiting a museum than an auction house! Errol Fuller, the Natural History sales curator, commented, “We are very pleased with the results of our second Evolution sale. ‘Monty’ got a lot of attention from all over the world, from both museums and private collectors. “The auction also took taxidermy sales to a new level. An extinct stuffed Passenger Pigeon (the last one died in a US zoo in 1914) sold to a UK private buyer for £11,050.” Silke Lohmann

Seeds of change
H
ow many seeds have you eaten today? Probably more than you realise. As a nation, we consume tons of them every day and whether they are ground to make our bread, mushed to accompany our chips or sprinkled on our burger bun, seeds play an important role in our diet… as well as in our garden! Most of the seed heads that were left over from autumn have now fallen over, disintegrated, or been eaten by hungry birds, so as part of my ‘outdoor housework’ I’m cutting them down to ground level before the new growth begins to emerge next month. The stately seed heads of Stipa gigantea looked fantastic for such a long period of time, as did the erect stems of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’, but even these have been defeated by the wind. It may be cold outside, but now is the perfect time for planning what to grow this year, from seed of course! Over recent years the popularity of growing your own vegetables has meant that veg seed sales have overtaken those of traditional flowers, but you really can’t beat the satisfaction of plants from seed. The first plants I ever grew were Snap Dragons. I was 15, and I found the packet in the back of a drawer (presumably they had been stuck to a box of cereal at some stage). I diligently followed the instructions for sowing and placed them on top of my wardrobe (I’m not quite sure why I did that). What happened next really was a miracle. They germinated! It was

hard to believe that the old seed, uneven layer of compost, wardrobe location and over-watered soil, produced a rash of new seedlings. It wasn’t long before they had grown to around two inches high and bent towards the light, narrowly avoiding the Artex ceiling! I potted them on and they produced the most beautiful range of colours all summer long, and that was the moment I became hooked on gardening. It wasn’t really a surprise that they germinated, as that’s what seeds are designed to do. They can survive in their dormant state for years, and because there are often more seeds per packet than you know what to do with, I always sow just a few more than I need and return the rest to a sealed container in the fridge. Stored like this they keep for years. To give them the best start in life, most seeds require just a tray of compost and some warmth. Large seeds should be covered over with compost, but small seeds can be left uncovered as they often don’t have enough energy to push new leaves through the soil. Prick out singly once large enough to handle and grow on somewhere frost-free, before gradually hardening off ready for life outdoors. Until next time, happy winter gardening. Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net Photo: Snap dragons can be grown in a flowerbed if you don’t have a wardrobe!

Diary of a ‘Commuter’ Smallholder The continuing diary of Michaela Giles, a Billingshurst smallholder
T
he recent bout of cold windy weather has really helped dry out the gateways and some of the higher up the hill pig pens. We were feeling quite positive about it until the WSSC Countryside Ranger came through the public footpath (without shutting the gate) and moaned about “all the mud” and told us we have to do something about it. Quite what she had in mind remains a mystery; teach all the animals to hover? Build a glass dome over the land? We attended Billifest again Don’t we look smart at this year with the West Sussex Smallholders. Although very cold it was the most fantastic of winter days with a bright blue sky. We had a laugh with the other smallholders and a rather decent chap that was handing out nonalcoholic, but warm, mulled wine and made just enough money to cover my purchases. The horses (“hay wasters”, as my husband calls them) are now coming in at night which they love, especially the big boy who would be quite happy to remain inside until spring. The goats are also still
pleased to be indoors and won’t come out even if we leave the door open, although we will have to invest in some yokes for feeding time, even if it’s just one for the buck Noah – he goes from trough to trough annoying the other goats until he settles at one particular pile of exactly the same food. We also had to take an impromptu day off for the Rural Payments Agency inspector to check all our sheep and goats’ ear tags, herd registry, movement forms etc, within 48 hours of Billifest! notification. Failure to jump to attention results in non-compliance so we were a tad worried when, with just the two of us at home, we couldn’t get the sheep inside. So when the inspector arrived I had to tell her; as we walked up the field and the whole flock took one look at her, all but saluted and made their way single file to the stables – making us look like complete liars in the process! I’m pleased to say all was in order and we passed muster. Michaela Giles www.tedfoldcottagefarm.co.uk

espiratory conditions. With some horses spending more time stabled during the winter months respiratory problems can occur. You can help your horse by feeding soaked hay or haylage to reduce the dust and spores he inhales while he is eating and using dust-free bedding is a tremendous help as well; there are many dust extracted beddings on the market today. Investing in rubber matting in the stable will enable you to keep a smaller bed which is less likely to harbour mould spores or ammonia than more traditional deep beds. Try to make sure the horse gets plenty of turnout to minimise time spent in a dusty environment. Mud fever. This can be a horse owner’s nightmare. The disease is caused by bacteria entering through tiny lesions in the skin and setting up infection. Skin on the lower legs and heels becomes scabby, cracked and very sore. If left untreated it can become seriously infected and require antibiotic treatment from the vet. Catching it in the early stages can save much discomfort for the horse. Check the legs every day – if the horse has feathers take your time to have a good look and feel for any tell-tale scabs on the lower legs, stabled horses can be checked when they come in at night for grass kept animals this can more difficult, invest in a decent head torch that leaves hands free if you have to check your horses in the dark. Try to provide some areas of hardstanding too so horses can stand off any mud. If your horse does succumb to mud fever you will have to wash his legs in warm water and an antibacterial wash and gently remove any scabs. Consider clipping off feathers to allow for treatment and healing. Dry the legs thoroughly and apply a topical cream or powder before turnout to create a barrier against bacteria on the skin. There are many topical applications on the market to help treat and prevent mud fever. If the symptoms don’t improve or the area looks very angry and inflamed seek advice from your vet. If you are washing legs daily always dry them thoroughly afterwards or you may make them more susceptible to mud fever. Consider letting mud dry and then brushing it off. Thrush. This is a foot condition that is caused by the horse standing around in wet conditions. The frog and
sole of the foot become very smelly and can issue a fetid discharge. Bacteria thrive in the anaerobic conditions of the horse feet, so it is important to pick feet out daily. Mild thrush can be treated with an over-the-counter preparation from the local feed store or tack shop, serious thrush that results in lameness should be seen by the vet. Foot abscess. Once the wet weather sets in and horses’ feet are subject to standing in mud the sole of the foot can become soft allowing bacteria entry. Often the first sign of a foot abscess is a very lame horse that will not bear weight on the affected foot. The first things most owners think of is that the horse has broken his leg. (This is also possible so check the horse very carefully before attempting to move him.) Thankfully the most common cause is an abscess which your vet can drain for you – immediate relief for horse and owner! Rain scald. This is more common in field kept animals especially after prolonged wet weather. It is caused by the same bacteria that causes mud fever and often occurs along the back, rump and neck of the horse. Like mud fever it can become infected and very sore if not treated in time. If you have a horse prone to rain scald make sure you have enough good quality rugs on hand to prevent the animal becoming soaked to his skin and allow for a change of rug to prevent the inside becoming damp in severely wet weather. Symptoms of rain scald are similar to mud fever with clumps of hair coming away revealing weeping scabs underneath. To treat rain scald if at all possible it is best to clip off any thick matted hair from the area allowing you to treat the condition and to be able to thoroughly dry the area afterwards. Rug the horse up, preferably with a light cotton sheet underneath a turnout rug, cotton is kind to skin and you will be able to pop the cotton rug in a washing machine easily on a regular basis for infection control. Hopefully winter isn’t treating you too badly and spring will soon be here! Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Local celebrity releases her first book with Forelock Books
L
ast year, publisher Michelle Charman moved to Pulborough to set up Forelock Books; publisher of horse and pony adventure stories. Her decision to move to this part of West Sussex was driven by the rural lifestyle and the number of equestrian facilities and pony clubs in the area. Michelle believes that in order to understand what young equestrians want, you have to live in their boots. Within weeks of moving to Pulborough and setting up Forelock Books, Michelle received a phone call from legendary author KM Peyton’s agent, offering her one of Kathleen’s latest equestrian tales. That association led to her meeting TV actress Susan Jameson who lives locally, in Wisborough Green. Susan has loved horses all her life and has owned several
native ponies, which she often wrote and kept notes about. Eventually, Sue pulled these notes together into four wonderful stories that Michelle immediately fell in love with. The aim of Forelock Books is to keep children reading beyond the age of seven and into their teens, by providing stories that will appeal to children and horse-mad adults alike. Pony Tails by Sue Jameson is one of six titles published by Forelock Books in 2014, with more titles including more heart-warming stories from Sue planned for this year. Pony Tails and other titles from Forelock Books can be bought from local stockists including Fishers Farm, Amazon or direct from www.forelock-books.co.uk Michelle Charman, Publisher It was a pleasure to meet Susan Jameson, who I have long admired as an actress. It was a wonderful surprise to learn she is also a very talented writer. Having read Pony Tails I am sure it will have wide appeal to pony lovers of all ages. January… The Winter Month John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
J
anuary… that long, cold and often seemingly endless month of the year. The working day starts in the chilly darkness and ends long after any winter sun has long ceased to shine. I must confess, though, that nowadays this period of the year does not bring to me the discomfort that it once did. I can now peer from the depths of the duvet and listen to the rain beating, or watch the icy patterns forming on the windows and not have to step out onto the cold bedroom floor in readiness for the early morning milking. January in the milking shed was something of a mixed blessing. For me as a young lad in the late ’fifties it was a rather brutal introduction to the practicalities of farming. At 5.30 on a winter morning there is not much that can be said in favour of leaving a warm bed for a stroll across a frozen meadow or under a sleet-filled sky. Once in the shed, however, the morning used to take on a much more welcoming feel. The warmth that hung in the air from the heat generated by awaiting cows closed around you and the familiar aroma of hay and bovine breath clung to you as you prepared the animals for milking. For the newcomer to the shed it took a while to adjust to the smell of the animals but to any dairyman it was part of his life and he carried it with him all the working day. Any cowman from those days will confirm this by the way that he was offered a clear passage to the counter in the village shop as he bought his daily paper and packet of Woodbines! There was one man, though, who generated a feeling of sympathy in me that even outshone my own self-pity. How far he had travelled to get to us I cannot recall, but the sight of his dilapidated old Austin clanking into the yard on a freezing January morn still lives vividly in my memory. He would ease his thin frame from out of the car, wrapped in a thick khaki duffel coat and to complete the whole fashion statement his long neck was buried in a hand-knitted scarf of unknown origins. He was the Recorder. The Jersey Cattle Society held the milk and butterfat records of all the Jersey cows and it was from these records that the value of any animal could be assessed. It was this chap’s job to make sure that all records were accurate and honest. Periodically he would descend on the farm armed to the teeth with folders and bottles to record and check the milk record of every cow in the herd. He would weigh every bucket, place a sample into
one of his multitude of tiny bottles, carefully label each with the animal’s herd number and place them safely into a multi-sectioned box on the shed windowledge. These would then go off to the lab for testing for butterfat content and we would wait a week or so for the results to give us the all clear that our own records were accurate and true for a further few months. The butterfat results would be logged towards giving a greater value to any cow or her offspring that were to be either sold or chosen for herd breeding. Then it was back into his draughty, leaky old banger. It lacked the luxury of any form of heating but more than made up for with the first class air-conditioning offered by the multitude of holes that decorated the rusty floorpan. The back seat would be loaded with his hoard of chinking glass bottles and dog-eared paperwork, protected by the enveloping folds of an old army blanket, and off he would go into the winter gloom. He loved that old car though. He informed us that providing he left a small paraffin sump heater under her, she never refused to start no matter what the weather. Bless his cotton socks… another character that will stay with me for ever. So, here we are in January again. The month the Romans called Janus, their God of Time. He had two faces. One looked back and was worn, bearded and wrinkled; the other looked forward with a fresh and energetic face. I refuse to comment on which one looks back at me in the mirror in the morning. Many things happen in this month. ‘First Footing’ in the first seconds, minutes and hour was believed to be very important for the family in the year to come. Hence the wait to kiss the loved ones on the stroke of midnight to ensure that those we love remain close and safe for the following year. The myths say that if the first person one meets at the turn of the year is a dark-headed male stranger, bearing gifts of coal, then the year will be warm; if he brings salt or money, then it will be a year of prosperity. So what did he bring you? A garnet perhaps, the stone of January, from the Latin Garnatus (pomegranate), named after its colourful seed. The Bible says it was the jewel that lightened the darkness on Noah’s Ark. The Koran states heaven glows with them and the ancient Egyptians believed them to be the blood of Isis. Cold, dreary month? No, just another one to enjoy and make the most of, and I hope that you all have a good one, as well as enjoying the other eleven that are to follow. John Nash

Living with Laika – ‘Walking for miles!’
I
’ve found my wellies at last as the rain lashes down – Laika really needs that walk! Yep, it’s one of the joys of dog ownership that the weather is but a backdrop for a walk! She is as keen as ever and as I reach for the leash, she excitedly spins around, huge feathered tail lashing in all directions. Head bowed, I face the onslaught. Laika, ears pressed back, searches for smells which are becoming quickly diluted by the downpour. We return, sodden – I really must get a new raincoat! Laika resembles a large mobile rug with the deep pile dripping copious amounts of water on Mrs M’s steam-cleaned kitchen floor – need a boot room! On command, she jumps into her large plastic bed that is covered with towels and kindly seeks to dry herself down – good dog! It was really damp underfoot in the woods and the leaf litter lay thick and moist as Laika crashed through the thinning undergrowth looking for something to pursue. The rabbits were lying low and pheasants were now the quarry. Rich, golden brown shapes with fluorescent green heads running quickly, before flying fast and
low, wings whirring, seeking shelter in low branches. Yes, we dog owners really put in the miles for the sake of our pooches. The National Dog Walking Index (Yes, there is one, you know!) compiled by Mountain Warehouse, the outdoor clothing company, interestingly revealed that the average British dog owner walks their pet as far as the distance from London to Aberdeen every year – that’s 433 walks a year covering a distance of 548 miles! This equates to about 7,000 miles over the average life of a dog – fascinating! The equivalent of walking from London to Timbuktu and back! How many pairs of trainers and wellies is that and how many poo bags are used? Well, with all this exercise, it’s no surprise that the survey reveals that the majority of dog owners believe that having a dog has made them fitter – just as I alluded to in my November piece. Yes, fitter but poorer, as each British dog owner spends more than £400 a year on dog food, vet bills, treats, grooming, pet insurance, holidays and kennels. Worth it, though, isn’t it? Ron Myal

Driving in adverse winter weather
H
ere at Billingshurst Fire Station we are only too familiar with the consequences of driving in adverse winter conditions without making the necessary preparations – both for yourself and your vehicle. ‘Drive to Arrive’ is our motto. So here are a few suggestions to ensure your journey is trouble free… Prepare for your journey by listening to local/national weather broadcasts and travel bulletins – especially for the areas you will be driving through. As conditions can change rapidly, check them regularly and be prepared to change your plans if conditions on your route worsen. When extreme weather is possible, keep an emergency kit in your car, especially if you're going on a long journey. Unnecessary? “It won’t happen to me.” That’s what everyone who has found themselves stranded in their car overnight due to a snow storm or floods, thought. How would you stay warm? What would you eat and drink? If you must drive in these conditions, we recommend that you carry:
• Tow rope • A shovel • Wellington boots • A hazard warning triangle • De-icing equipment • First aid kit (with any used items replaced) • A working torch • A car blanket • Warm clothes • Emergency rations (inc hot drink in a flask) • Mobile phone (fully charged) Ensure your car is in good order, tyres have plenty of tread and your screen washwasher bottle is full. Try to share the driving so you’re never travelling on your own. This way at least you will always have someone to help out. If we get a cold snap let’s make sure we are prepared for the worst and let’s hope we don’t get the floods of last winter which certainly gave the emergency services a very hard time. We hope you all had a great Christmas and are now enjoying the start of 2015. Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station

roadband is something we can’t live without. It seems crazy to think that a few years ago the majority of businesses and households were still on dial-up connections – you remember the weird noises and interminable waits? Well, with dial-up now just a distant memory (for 99% of us), our broadband requirements are getting bigger and bigger – or should we say faster and faster? The advent of streaming, downloading, digital photos and videos mean that we need more speed and more bandwidth. Thank the Lord then, that fibre optic Internet has arrived in our part of the world – in fact we have just had fibre optic installed and the difference is incredible. No more waiting for large emails to go through, no more buffering when streaming, no more waiting while Dropbox syncs itself. It’s almost like magic! So what is fibre optic? Fibre optic broadband does everything your current broadband does except that it’s much faster due to the technology used i.e. fibre optic cables. You don’t need any fancy software to run it and like your current broadband you just need a router, which your chosen supplier should provide as part of your package.

Public Service Award for Long Serving Councillor The Parish Council warmly congratulates Parish Councillor Barry Barnes on the receipt of the Public Service Award in the West Sussex County Times Community Awards. Cllr. Barnes has served on Billingshurst Parish Council for more than 46 years. During that time, Cllr. Barnes has been involved with numerous community projects, too many to name them all, but notably the sports facilities at Jubilee Fields and provision of facilities for young people including skate parks and play equipment. Cllr. Barnes is always ready to help out at community events and undertake repairs when needed. The Council and its staff are very grateful for his cheerful co-operation and can think of no better recipient of this award.
Horsham District Planning Framework The Billingshurst Parish Council Clerk attended almost every day of the Horsham District Planning Framework public examination in preparation for the Council to defend its position on matter 12 at the examination, ‘Should land to the east of the village be allocated for housing in addition to the permitted development?’ The Council put forward a robust defence of its position asking the Planning Inspector to give the village time to assimilate and integrate the recent development and permitted development for a further 475 houses. The outcome of the examination will be known in the Spring.
Winter Maintenance As colder weather approaches, our thoughts turn to the Parish Council’s Emergency Plan. Heavy snowfall has caused significant disruption during recent winters, not just in Billingshurst but across the County, and your Parish, District and County
Councils have been working together to lessen the potential disruption and impact of bad weather. The County Council will endeavour to keep main roads open whilst the District Council will clear other important roads, footways and car parks. Residents who are able are asked to play their part by clearing snow from paths and even roads outside their homes and businesses. The Government has made it clear that those who do clear snow need have no fear of legal action if they clear and someone falls and is injured, so long as the clearance does not make the condition of the pathway more dangerous. Guidance on clearing snow can be found on www.direct.gov.uk or is available from the Parish Office. Salt/grit will be made available at strategic sites throughout the village for members of the public to spread on the public footpaths and roads where there is a need – particularly on icy bends and hills, on routes used by older or disabled people and routes to shops, doctors’ surgery, etc. Please think of your elderly or disabled neighbours who may not be able to get out should weather conditions make it dangerous. If you are unable to help personally, please let the Parish Office know and the staff will contact someone to help them. The Parish Council would also like to hear from anybody who is willing to help with snow clearance, shopping, transportation to more remote areas (4 x 4 vehicles), snow ploughing, helping to run an emergency shelter if needed, etc. Details of the locations of salt/grit bags will be posted on the Parish Council’s noticeboards and website, Facebook and Twitter pages. Although the weather may be reasonable now, please think about joining our register of Billingshurst volunteers and offer a helping hand to those who may experience difficulties. If you want to register as someone who may need help in adverse weather, please contact the Parish Office. For roadworks updates and daily gritting information, follow @WSHighways.

Billingshurst Lions book sales pass £500,000
W
ell, would you believe it, Billingshurst Lions have just reached the magical sales figure of £500,000 since starting the sale of donated books over 30 years ago. It all started with a pasting table in the open within Jengers Mead and a couple of boxes full of books. Luckily the day was dry and we managed sales of around £30. Over the years donations increased and we developed to two pasting tables, then into one of the empty shops; rent free but “get out within 48 hours”, and then, some twelve years ago we took the huge step of taking a lease and opening six days a week. We wish to acknowledge the generosity of those who bring books to us, for without them we would not be so successful and it is fair to say we are now the recipients of a torrent of books from far and wide. At the same time we also have to thank all those who visit us and buy, for it is through them that we have raised over £500,000 and are looking forward to doubling that figure in time. To mark the occasion the Lions were pleased to present a bouquet of flowers to Mrs Jean Johnson and her husband David from Church Stretton in
Shropshire as they were the couple who took us over the magical figure. You may well ask why a couple from such a distance were in the shop; in visiting the area they were told by the owners of their B&B that they must visit us while in the area! How good is that? Needless to say they were both full of smiles as they left us. It is appropriate at this time to record thanks to those in the Billingshurst Lions Club who put in many hours of volunteer work. While this is a duty shared by the Club it would be wrong not to mention our particular thanks to Richard Parrott, a member for the past 35 years and who is in overall control of our success and who can spot a valuable book from one not quite so good. For more information about the Club contact Lion Alan Ridout on (01403) 871370 or call in at the bookshop and have a chat with the Lion on duty Photo: David and Jean Johnson with the bouquet presented to them by Ken Johnson (no relation)
