I
am sometimes asked what happened to the Faces of Billingshurst series by Rob Warde which ran from April 2011 to October 2012 and featured a local ‘character’ each month. Rob moved to pastures new, but this month Pippa Cleeve has picked up the baton with Our Community Volunteers. Her first piece (page 54) features Robin Chittenden, driver of the Billingshurst Community Minibus. This month sees the start of the serialised wartime recollections of octogenarian Brian Thompson who came to the area as an evacuee from London, aged just 6, and now lives in West Chiltington. I am sure this extremely interesting – and at times poignant – piece will appeal to readers of all ages. Younger readers will no doubt be left wondering just how they would cope in those harsh times. The area’s longest-established, independent family firm
Fowlers were very pleased to be a major sponsor of the Billingshurst Show and Carnival Procession held on the Last Sunday in June. It was a brilliant day with tremendous floats parading through the village all culminating in an extravaganza of fun and excitement at the actual show. Keith from Fowlers hoped everyone really enjoyed the day and thanks all those who put all the hard work in to make the day happen.

Free July Concerts!
T
he Horsham Garden Music Festival is a registered charity that has been formed with the express purpose of running a series of Saturday and Sunday afternoon summer music events in Horsham’s Human Nature Garden. Our ethos is to create a whole community outdoor entertainment experience for the people of Horsham and the surrounding villages and to make the festival as inclusive as possible. The whole community ethos starts with our committee who are all volunteers. We embrace a range of skills and are drawn from across the community from sixth form students to senior citizens – the involvement of volunteers across a broad age range is a tradition we intend to maintain. Everyone is expected to help plan and organise the events as well as undertaking various responsibilities during the concerts. Despite the challenges of the weather and competing with various sporting events we are delighted to report a successful first three years. The festivals have attracted a total audience of over 6,000 people, and some 500 musicians and singers have graced the stage over the last three summers. The 2014 festival began with a Musician’s Showcase featuring a band that had overcame the extra challenge of disability as well as some 18 young performers. The following day witnessed a great lineup of entertainers with Music from Stage and Screen. The next weekend featured the popular Jazz and Soul session and concluded with a vibrant and memorable Rock concert on the Sunday. The whole community family orientation of these concerts was further enhanced by the inclusion of events for young children – in addition to ‘face-painting’ artists, a
Sussex based organisation ran ‘circus skills’ workshops. There was a successful charity ‘bucket collection’ for Horsham in Bloom and ourselves as well as, for the first time, a raffle. This year we continue to provide a performance opportunity for amateur and semi-professional music groups who are associated with Horsham and District area and to include as broad a range as possible of music genre. We wish to encourage individuals and groups across all ages, abilities, communities and ethnicities to perform. For 2015 all events are free. We would like to see you there! Emma Cummings

WW2 Evacuee
From London to West Sussex Recollections of Brian Thompson, Wartime Evacuee – Part 1 These wonderful recollections, in four parts, of wartime evacuee Brian Thompson were sent in by Village Tweet reader Geoff Bell: “My wife was working in the front garden of our cottage, ‘Hinkhurst’ in Brooks Green, when a passer-by stopped and started to tell this story. After an hour or so and a coffee I asked if the elderly gentleman, Brian Thompson, would kindly put in writing his memories of his wartime years in Brooks Green as an evacuee.” Brian now lives in West Chiltington.
I
lived at a house called ‘Hinkhurst’ in Brooks Green for about four years during the 1939-1945 war with a family called London. The family consisted of Mr and Mrs London, their son Jack and their daughter Elsie. There were two other evacuees there as well so there was a total of seven of us in a house that only had three bedrooms. Before I can tell you the things I remember about those years I need to tell you how I ended up there in the first place… In 1939 Europe was a very unsettled area. Germany was behaving badly to its neighbouring countries causing England to declare war against them on 3rd September 1939. Knowing that London would be heavily bombed the British Government already had a plan to evacuate the children out of the city and into the countryside to protect its future generation – The Pied Piper of Hamlin. On the 2nd of September, the day before the declaration, at the tender age of six, I reported to my school in Peckham, South London, with all the other children armed with a tiny suitcase and a cardboard box on a string containing a gas mask. Poison gas of various types had been used in the 1914/18 war with Germany and there was no evidence to suggest it might be not used again. Large brown labels were attached to our coats with safety pins giving our names and where we were from before being formed up into a large ‘crocodile’, probably around 60 or 70 children, and marched off to Peckam Rye Station. My mother and father followed the crocodile but on the other side of the road as parents were not allowed to make contact with us. My last memory of that event as we entered the station was waving to my parents and wondering why my mother was crying. Our parents had no idea where we were going and must have been unsure whether they would ever see us again. As a child this thought never entered my head; we were going on an adventure, exciting… Trains in those days had no corridors, just individual carriages with a door on either side
8
designed for eight passengers. The train was waiting for us when we reached the platform and we were crammed into carriages, probably 15 to each, and off we went. From time to time the train would stop at a station and some children would alight and then on we would go again. As with the roads where all directional signs had been removed, so too had the station signs so no one knew where we were. Eventually it was my turn to leave the train together with about 30 other children. We were in Horsham but we didn’t know that at the time. Outside the station we were loaded up into horse trailers and taken off to Knepp Castle where we given tea and buns before being allocated to the families that were to care for us for who knows how long. I think it was compulsory for households to take in an evacuee. Households were inspected, assessed and told how many children they had to take in. Here you must feel sorry for these poor country folk having to take in streetwise cockney urchins, who spoke what must have seemed a foreign language, not knowing anything about them or how they might disrupt their way of life. I was initially allocated to the Perry family who lived on the Castle estate. Mr Perry was the butler to Sir Charles Burrell at the secondary property, ‘Floodgates’. I think Mr Perry had to be ‘live in’ staff as he wasn’t home very often. Mrs Perry was a kindly lady with a daughter, Kirsty, who must have been about four years old and there was also Mrs Perry’s father who kept ferrets and rabbits in cages in the garden. They lived in a relatively modern tied cottage close to the big house. This was a big culture shock for me coming from the London slums. I had seen horses before – the milkman, coalman and others delivered by horse and cart and of course everyone in our street had a cat (how else would you keep the mice at bay) but ferrets! And now we were surrounded by cows, sheep, pigs and a large kennel with dozens of foxhounds on our doorstep. What sort of world had I landed in? The first problem came at bedtime, I thought I was on a day’s outing. I certainly didn’t expect to stay the night. I wanted to go home to my parents. There were a lot of tears but Mrs Perry got me through that and after a few days things got better. Was I told that I was going away indefinitely and hadn’t taken it in or was I duped? With hindsight the small suitcase was a clue but I simply didn’t know. To be continued…

Meteoric Rise for the Magpies!
I
t has been a meteoric rise for Loxwood Football Club, from the depths of Division 5 in the West Sussex League they have rocketed up the leagues and now ply their trade in Division 1 of the Sussex County League. The pitch and facilities have also moved on with floodlights, hard spectator standing, a 100-seat stand, covered section and modern clubhouse which have all come as a result of significant local fundraising, sponsors and grant applications. The pitch at Plaistow Road is now regarded as one of the best playing surfaces in the County League. Having gained promotion the club had a Loxwood FC First Team highly successful first season in Division 1 finishing sixth with the added bonus of some excellent cup runs reaching the semifinals of the Sussex Senior Cup, the final of the Sussex RUR Cup and competing in the FA Vase for the first time ever. Next season they will be proud entrants into the FA Cup. The Reserves finished second to earn promotion and the flourishing Academy won the Sussex Youth
League and the Sussex Youth Cup. Further developments are planned including an enlarged youth section. Indeed there will be a youth (7-13 years) SUMMER COACHING DAY run by former professional Mark Beard on Friday 31st July – see www.loxwoodfc.co.uk/ club-shop/ for details. The club is run by a dedicated committee which applies the disciplines and standards you would expect from any well run senior football club. Clearly it’s a club for the community – whatever your age, gender or ability, there should be a place for you at the club. They are currently the highest ranked local football team outside of Horsham’s first team – a fantastic platform from which to build. Sponsorship and advertising packages for the new season will be available via the club’s website shortly. Why not come along to watch some of the games? Details for the new season will be published on the website very soon: www.loxwoodfc.co.uk. Ray Meridew

Book reviews
A Good Read July’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Eating for England – Nigel Slater Subtitled ‘The Delights and Eccentricities of the British at Table’, this is an extended love letter to British food over the last 40 years. If you have fond memories of sharing a box of Black Magic at Christmas or spooning jam over school rice pudding, then this is for you. Anyone who owns one of Nigel Slater’s cookbooks will know that there is as much pleasure to be had from reading the recipes as there is from following them. He writes about food with passion, knowledge and honesty, admitting his fondness for Heinz Tomato Ketchup, Smarties and other non-gastronomic treats. Here, he devotes short chapters (often no more than a paragraph or two) to a whole range of peculiarly British delights. Some are drawn from childhood memories, such as his father’s unsuccessful experiment with a coffee percolator (it ends up packed away next to the Christmas tree lights) or his mother’s blancmanges. Others are more contemporary and tell of the delight to be had from a visit to the fishmonger or the ritual of a Saturday farmers’ market.
All are well written, funny and evocative. Whether you read this from cover to cover, or simply scan the chapter headings for whatever takes your fancy, this is a perfect book for thinking about food – and despite Slater’s reservations the last chapter will probably send you out to the shops for a packet of Pink Wafers! Why is Snot Green? – Glenn Murphy Want to see a nine-year-old boy (or indeed, a 39year-old boy) reading? Well, buy a copy of this book and that’s what you’ll get. In fact, you’ll get more than that. Written by a member of staff from the Science Museum, this book answers those questions you’ve always wanted to ask: ‘Could you dig your way to Australia?’ (Come on, admit it – you tried to on the beach when you were seven), ‘Are people with bigger heads cleverer?’ and ‘Why do we walk on two legs?’ as well as some that might never have occurred to you, for example ‘Do spiders have ears?’ Each question is answered in conversational style, anticipating the reader’s responses and taking the explanation further. While there is a fairly heavy concentration on the grosser side of science – poo, snot and gas feature heavily – there’s also plenty of technical terminology and you really do learn something new on every page. Even how to stop an ice-cream headache – so well worth a read for that alone!
New story from local author: Albert Goes To Glupiter
A
lbert is a small boy with a big imagination. He dreams of going to outer space and to find something no one has ever discovered before. When one cold, wet day he decides to build a spaceship from recycled materials, it takes him to a place he could only ever dream about. His encounter with aliens is endearing and heart warming to read. It’s make-and-do section at the back of the book makes for a fantastic craft session for young readers to encourage them to
14
try and make a rocket from their recycled things. This is a charming story by new author and illustrator, Haven-based Frances Roots, in a series of books surrounding its main character Albert, as he sets off on various adventures incorporating the recycling message and make and do specials at the rear of the books. It is aimed either as a bedtime story for threeto six-year-olds or for young readers aged four to six years.

ine English sparkling wine was served in a stately home to the 3,000th person to join a canal restoration trust. Significant recruit Roy Tanner and his wife Caroline were entertained ‘with a fizz’ by Lord and Lady Egremont at Petworth House in West Sussex. His lordship said he was proud to serve champagnestyle wine from a nearby vineyard to celebrate the Wey & Arun Canal Trust reaching 3,000 members. Lord Egremont, who is President of the Trust, also presented Mr Tanner with a certificate to mark the milestone recruitment figure. Mr and Mrs Tanner, from Dorking, are members 3,000 and 3,001 of an organisation which is restoring a canal which runs from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford near Guildford in Surrey. Mr Tanner retired after a career as a BT engineer, driving instructor and security officer and has since become a canals enthusiast. He and Mrs Tanner signed up with the Trust after enjoying towpath and countryside walks and excursions on

My favourite John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
I
return this month to the subject that has ruled my life for nearly 60 years. The apple. No… more than just ‘any old apple’, I refer to the Cox’s Orange Pippin. Bred by Richard Cox at Colnbrook Lawn, Slough in 1825, it was – and many think still is – the king of apples as regards the balance between acidity, sweetness and flavour. But why do so many people think that it is not at all like the apple that they knew from their childhood? The fruit we knew from those days was smaller, greener, and had a slight roughness to its skin. But it was far more flavourful. Since then though the market has altered the way we grow and sell all fruit. It all started way back when we first joined the Common Market… Before that event we had a ‘tied’ market in the UK. No fruit from Europe or the Southern Hemisphere was allowed into the country until after the Christmas break. Back then we grew our apples on large trees that gave huge crops of medium sized apples. There was no rush to get the crop off as it would all be marketed before the post-Christmas deadline, and as a result the apples were picked at the tree ripened stage or very near that point. There was no requirement to long store them and any old barn was capable of keeping them for just a few weeks. Then came the Market. Now the valuable Christmas market was inundated with apples. Golden Delicious poured in from the continent, an apple that appealed to the sweeter tooth of the younger buyer, and the price fell at that critical marketing time as the market was swamped with the imported fruit. It was realised that from that moment on the marketing period would have to be spread over many more months than was thought possible. The result: all those old giant trees had to go, and the bonfires burnt all over the country. Huge controlled atmosphere stores were built with large packhouses – like the seven-acre site of the Kirdford Growers – and the whole method of harvesting was sent back to the drawing board. The apples were now picked long before they were ready to eat. (You can’t store an apple that’s ripe.) Instead of taking six weeks or more
26
to pick the fruit the whole crop had to be off the trees in three. There had to be side effects that followed these changes. Trees were planted in far more intensive numbers. An old orchard had around 200 trees to the acre, now 1,000 was not unknown. The fruit was selected to be bigger, more colourful and the many new varieties introduced were all crisp and sweet to the bite. Thus the poor old Cox suffered. By nature it’s a smaller apple. Its cell walls are softer in their make up, so it has less ‘crunch’ in its eating, and as I have said earlier, the younger folk find its sharper taste is not so much to their liking. I should add here too that it is the most difficult, cantankerous apple to grow as well. It crops far lower than its modern counterparts and if there is any disease or pest in the orchard vicinity it will find the Coxes. Thankfully it is still regarded by most growers – especially us older ones – as the best flavoured of them all. Tree ripened it has no competitor and picked very early those esters that make up the final aroma and flavour are never so strong. We ask a lot of the modern apple, it must store for anything up to eight months or more and still be as crisp and sweet as the day it was picked. It must not bruise easily (supermarkets do not like wastage) and most of all, it must look pretty as we sadly buy by our eyes nowadays far more than by taste. So, all in all, it’s been a long, hard battle for our Mr Cox’s horticultural endeavour. After the best part of 200 years are we seeing the death knell of this wonderful fruit? I sincerely hope not. For me those old varieties still carry such a mixture of flavours when compared with the more bland sweetness of the newer members of the fruit shelf. An Egremont Russet, a pint and a chunk of cheese. Or maybe a large Blenheim Orange with its core stuffed full of plump sultanas, baked so its flesh cascades like snow across the plate. Or perhaps the strawberry sweetness of a tree ripe Worcester Pearmain… and on and on. I’m sure you all have your favourites from your own memories. But, and to me it’s a big but… I still regard the true leader of the pack as this small apple, bred from a pip of a Ribston Pippin by that retired brewer… the Cox’s Orange Pippin. May it be a part of our orchards for a long, long time to come. John Nash

Keep Billingshurst Frack Free – update
K
eep Billingshurst Frack Free has had a busy couple of months. After another successful Craft and Chat event at the Women’s Hall in May and a larger meeting at the Community Centre in April, many more people have signed up to help and find out more about our campaign. Speakers Dr Tony Whitbread, from Sussex Wildlife Trust, and Brenda Pollack from Friends of the Earth, explained our concerns of water and air pollution, increased traffic and the industrialisation of the countryside which come with drilling for unconventional gas. While Celtique Energie, the operator of the Broadford Bridge site, say they will only be doing conventional drilling for oil here, we say beware the ‘no-frack’ promise, as this has been said about other locations yet hydraulic fracturing for shale gas still happened. And once one well is drilled, more will inevitably follow. We don’t want the beautiful West Sussex countryside, or anywhere in the UK for that matter, to look like this scene from Queensland, Australia. At the moment, however, Celtique and its partner Magellan Petroleum UK are suing each other in the High Court, London, according to a financial document filed in the U.S. So, at the time of going to
press, there is still no more activity at the Broadford Bridge site. But with the Conservative government going ‘all out for shale’ – even though the majority of their constituents don’t want it – we are still under threat. So, we are arranging a meeting with our local MP, Jeremy Quin, to find out his stance on unconventional drilling and what he can do to help persuade others in government to turn their backs on fracking. In addition, on Saturday 4th July, we are holding a big awareness-raising event at the King’s Arms, from 5pm till close. There’ll be live bands, including Vibe Machine, The Munday Sisters and Philip PJ Lymbery, plus a bouncy castle and face-painting for the kids. Many of us from Keep Billingshurst Frack Free will be there to answer anything you want to know about what’s going on at Broadford Bridge and the fracking industry in general. Everyone’s welcome to come along, have a chat over a beer while enjoying the music, and take away as many information leaflets as you can carry! E-mail keepbillingshurstfrackfree@mail.com to find out more and join our campaign. Emily Anderson Photo of wells in Queensland, Australia courtesy CCAG

Water without the guilt
W
ho remembers their dad hosing the garden on warm summer evenings? We always seemed to have a lush lawn when I was a child, apart from the summer of 1976 when hosepipes were banned and we all used stand-pipes for weeks. But nowadays hosepipes are the horticultural equivalent of a bad taste joke: out of style and somewhat frowned upon. But gardens need water to survive so what can we do? Well the truth is, we have more than enough water in the UK to sustain an average garden, but it tends to fall in the winter when all the plants are dormant. A water butt is a simple, economical solution for most urban gardens. Butts will catch the rainwater from your gutter and store it until it’s required. They typically hold between 100 and 300 litres depending on size. You can now buy huge rainwater tanks which hold up 1,000 litres and are great if you have the space. There are also underground storage tanks which hold over 2,500 litres! With special attachments, stored rainwater can be fed into hoses and sprinklers, so you can use them guilt-free. However, if you want to make the most of your saved water then irrigation systems are the best choice. They typically reduce the amount of water you use by 70-90%, which is a huge saving. Here are a few tips for getting the best from an irrigation system…
• Ground preparation is really important. Dig in lots of home-produced compost, well rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost. This organic matter will help the soil retain any moisture it receives. • Make sure the irrigation lines run under the tips of the branches rather than at the base of the plant. This will water the roots more efficiently. • Make sure you mulch. Mulch can be a membrane, gravel, bark chips or cocoa shells. The aim is to keep moisture in the soil. I favour organic mulches because they gradually rot down and can be dug in to improve the soil texture further. A few simple measures will ensure that your garden stays green this summer without costing the earth! Walk pastures daily and research the internet so you are familiar with the appearance of any poisonous plants; if you are unsure about a weed it’s best to pull it up if in any doubt. Ragwort. This is the most common and most familiar of poisonous plants frequently found on horse pasture. It is a very distinctive plant it flowers from May until October and has a bright yellow daisy-like flower and can reach two metres in height and is capable of producing thousands of seedlings which can be found on pasture in the autumn. During the spring the ragwort plant is easily recognisable in its rosette form. NEVER assume horses will not eat Ragwort; young seedlings may be less bitter and end up eaten and dying leaves can drop off plants and be ingested. Ragwort is most dangerous when it dries out as it remains highly toxic yet becomes palatable, this a cause of concern if it should ever get into a hay crop. Thoroughly check all hay before feeding, especially if buying from a new supplier. Ragwort poisoning affects the liver with toxins building up over a period of time, by the time symptoms appear it is often too late for treatment. The best way to control ragwort is to dig it out by the roots, special tools are available to make the job easier, it is best to burn the plants after removal from pasture. Heavy infestations of ragwort are best controlled by spraying the weed with a suitable herbicide, horses must be kept off pasture until ALL traces of the weed are gone. Buttercups. These are often seen as a harmless flower but in fact contain a toxin that can cause skin irritations especially in sensitive pink-skinned horses. Removal from buttercup infested pasture and topical treatment of any sores will soon have the horse feeling more comfortable. If symptoms do not improve call your vet as there could be another underlying problem. Unlike ragwort buttercups are harmless when dried out. Sycamore trees. These have been in the equine news frequently due to ongoing research into their link with Atypical Myopathy, a very serious condition that causes muscle soreness, high heart rate, muscle tremors,
breathing difficulties and excessive sweating. The speed at which the disease progresses is frightening, as is the mortality rate of between 75 and 90%. The research has pointed to the ‘helicopter’ sycamore seeds containing a toxin that triggers AM. The disease has a common link with overgrazed pasture leading to the horse foraging and eating the seeds. Prevention includes fencing off the areas around the trees to restrict the horse’s access to leaves and seeds, removing saplings and seeds from pasture and providing plenty of hay in the field so the horses are not encouraged to eat the seeds. Also consider stabling the horse overnight if he is grazed in close proximity to Sycamore trees. Oak trees and acorns. These contain tannic acid which causes kidney damage and gastro enteritis. Symptoms include lethargy, dull coat, lack of appetite and blood in the urine. Some horses and ponies can get a real taste for acorns so care must be taken to fence off any oak trees so the horse cannot gain access, and removing acorns from the pasture will help prevent poisoning too. Yew. A highly toxic plant – all of the plant apart from the bright red berries are toxic, rapid death can occur after ingestion of yew. Extreme care must be taken to ensure horses cannot gain access to this tree. These are the most common poisonous plants found on pasture, other plants to look out for but are not so common include, Foxgloves, Hemlock, Rhododendron, Bracken, and Laburnum Dealing with poisonous plants. If small numbers of the plant are present digging them up by the roots is sufficient. Dispose of plants by burning if possible. Where a larger concentration of plants is a concern spray with a suitable herbicide, your agricultural merchant will advise you on the best one to use. Read the instructions thoroughly and be prepared to keep horses off pasture for the time advised on the label and until all traces of the plant in question are gone. Smaller paddocks can be treated with a knapsack sprayer; wearing goggles, gloves and a facemask is a must. For large paddocks speak to an agricultural contractor. Jeannette Douglas. Keep Kirdford & Wisborough ‘Green’ – update
T
hank you to all of you who signed the petition to West Sussex County Council expressing support for Boxal Bridge following the article in April’s Village Tweet. Numbers were well in excess of the 3,000 signatures required, the number which can trigger a range of responses. Perhaps one surprising aspect is that more people signed this petition than signed to press WSCC to consider establishing a Frack-Free Zone although that still brought in more than the requisite 3,000 signatures. This is surely a sign of local interest in and support for the bridge but also a reflection of the amazing amount of work done by members of KKWG ably led by Katy Fletcher who started the petition. To recap briefly, West Sussex County Council (WSCC) Highways Department is considering demolishing our local Boxal Bridge situated as it is on the boundary of the Parishes of Kirdford and Wisborough Green. despite opposition from both Parish Councils and local residents. The potential plan was temporarily suspended until after the decision was due to have been made following the Appeal made by Celtique Energie (CE) with respect to the application for Oil/Gas drilling site in the field to the south of the bridge. However, CE withdrew on 11th March. So, we were keen to find out what would happen next. In September 2014, WSCC commissioned a Feasibility Study to examine the state of the bridge and to make recommendations. On Page 31 there are six Conclusions and Recommendations, and it is Option 6 – to demolish the existing bridge and replace it with a wider structure which was the preferred option chosen by the consultants and now being advocated by WSCC Highways Department. This despite the fact that in November 2013 both the Parish Councils of Kirdford and Wisborough Green stated in clear unequivocal terms to WSCC that
they did not want the bridge demolished. The bridge is listed as a Chichester District Council (CDC) heritage asset and is named as a community asset in the Kirdford Neighbourhood Plan adopted in 2014. The parishes and local residents want to keep the character of the bridge which matches that of the other three historic bridges leading to and from the village of Kirdford. Apart from the historical and community value of the bridge, there is the safety aspect concerning both the bridge and its approach. The current speed limit is 60 mph, unrealistic considering the width of the road and the bends on the approach to the bridge. However, evidence from traffic surveys have shown that the average speed is usually below this – at the higher end of 40 mph. Locals familiar with the road and the narrow bridge slow down. If the bridge were to be replaced by a structure wide enough to accommodate two cars then drivers will accelerate and this could result in an increasing number of accidents. Accidents have happened on this stretch of road but many go unrecorded because the police are not called. On 5th January 2015 there was a headon collision involving two cars which hit each other at the top of the hill on the Kirdford side just outside the entrance to the proposed Oil/Gas drilling site. Fortunately there were no fatalities but the rescue did involve two fire engines and a helicopter. It was reported in the County Times. The Kirdford Road was a country lane serving farms and equine establishments. The bridge does need approaching with caution. The road is prone to flooding but it is often the only way to access Kirdford village when the other approaches are severely flooded. WSCC are intending to send divers into the brook to examine the bridge beneath the water and further discussions will then be planned. Dr Jill Sutcliffe

The 2015 Offensive
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
N
anny had been planning the 2015 offensive against Anne’s chickens since summer 2014 because getting under the chicken guard netting was difficult and very back breaking and the weeds grew around the onions. When Nanny weeded them she trampled the onions and they stopped growing. So she had had a very poor onion crop. Her success with the fruit cage against the chickens being succesful, she decided to build a vege cage. This would be her first project for 2015 and she started early. When Anne and Gary had the side fence replaced, Tony the lovely fence man very kindly supplied and erected the upright poles around the waiting raised vege beds. They sat there like totem poles waiting for the next stage… Then Nanny bought some what she called ‘barge boards’ but was quickly corrected by Richard in the fencing suppliers to the correct name (which at the time of writing eludes me!) and then he had them delivered. Poor Grandad had to then carry the boards down to the vege garden. The next stage awaited… This involved Rob the helping man. First he had to restructure one of the vege beds which had been bent out of shape. Then he adjusted a couple of the upright poles so that they were square (well, ish). Waiting another fortnight for Rob’s next visit, he then had to drill and then screw the ‘bargeboards’ onto the top of the poles. After much discussion on how this was to be done, he accomplished it. It still didn’t look quite right. Wait another fortnight. (You can see why Nanny had to start early.) The next step was to tidy the ‘bargeboards’ so that they provided the basic structure. “Too top heavy,” muttered Grandad. But Nanny being stubborn as always said it would be alright. During this time of course, Anne’s chickens were picking and scratching away at the vege beds, getting rid of bugs (good) and enjoying the freedom as was their right and entitlement. “Not long now,” Nanny told them. “You are in for a surprise,” she told them as she hammered in a nail or two around the bottom of the structure. Then she dragged the netting from last year and draped it around
the frame. After some figuring and starting only to have to stop and figure and start again, Nanny finally had the netting up all around the enclosure frame. It took a long time because it was windy and several banged thumbs from the wayward hammer. It didn’t look too bad. Next came the gateway to the enclosure. After several nights thinking about this Nanny worked out a way to easily get humans in while keeping chickens out. Except of course Nanny had not counted on the holes in the netting which had been made last year. Of course the chickens found them and enjoyed their illicit grubbing in the garden. Nothing was planted yet thank goodness. After she had mended all the holes, tied everything down and closed the ‘gate’ Nanny rested. The next day when she let the chickens out they strutted past the vege cage without ‘batting an eyelid’ (if chickens could of course) and descended onto the compost heaps (already well scratched over and spread around) and the old pumpkin patch. The sheep fencing Nanny had put up around it offered little resistance to the foraging hens. In fact it became, as the sun grew warmer and the days longer, their favourite afternoon sunbatheing place. Having the vege plot restricted by the enclosure Nanny started the irrigation and then the planting – onions of course, sweet potatoes and some corn beans and peas (the only vegetables all the family eat). As for the chickens, well they have become very adventurous. Truly free range, they use all the paddocks as their food source. Very wisely, they can be found near the shetland sheep who would make short work of any fox that showed its beady eyes on a chicken dinner. Despite their days’ ramblings the hens return home to their coop at night as sleep settles on the little farm in Billingshurst. A sad Post Script: The grass in the sheep paddock grrew very long and Mr (or Mrs) Fox was able to sneak about much more easily. One day in late May the chickens became too adventurous, the sheep less alert and the fox more cunning. The hens did not return to their coop that night. RIP. Photo: Grahame Pearson Yvonne Fleece

Village Tweet Spot the Difference
Come along to the Loxwood Joust on 1st/2nd or 8th/9th August for some mediaeval Solution on page 52 mayhem! 12 differences - can you spot them all? Photo: Josh Miller
Slot Car Racing in Ifold Last November a half-page piece in Village Tweet announced the intention of forming a slot car racing club in Ifold, and requested a response from interested parties. Interested parties did indeed respond, and the Ifold Slot Car Racing Association was duly formed and has been a great success with members meeting every 2nd Wednesday to race, and every 4th Wednesday to set-up and test their cars. For practical reasons membership is limited, though the club can now accommodate one more member. Such a member would ideally need a selection of cars of varying performance, with Le Mans cars from 1960-1970 being the preferred type. (Magnets must be removed and no silicone tyres please.) Club members take a relaxed view of their hobby whereby winning is not the main aim, a fun evening being much more important. Interested? Please email iscra@btinternet.com

Sixth Formers Leave The Weald in Style
W
eald Sixth Formers celebrated the end of their formal education in style by holding their annual Leavers’ Day at the end of May. This annual event is a poignant date in the Sixth Form calendar and is something that everyone looks forward to. It is organised by the students themselves and celebrates all their hard work and dedication over the last two years as they prepare to move on to the exciting next stage of their lives. This year’s event saw Year 13 and staff dress up according to different themes set by the students including Greek gods in togas, characters from Toy Story, Thunderbirds and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The Lead Prefects led a whole year assembly which included a
quiz to see if the students could be recognised from photos when they were babies! Afterwards they enjoyed activities on the school field including inflatable volleyball and inflatable gladiators. There was also an ice cream van to provide a well-earned treat at the end of it all. Tom Backshall, Head of Sixth Form said, “Leavers’ Day celebrates the fantastic sense of community at The Weald Sixth Form and gives us the opportunity to celebrate all of our students’ achievements. We hope they’ve enjoyed their time here as much as we have and wish them lots of luck for the future.” Jan Steel, Communications Manager

Local business
Billingshurst Chamber Grows in the Community
T
he Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce now has 70 Members that employ 600 people and plays an increasingly important role in the community as ‘The Voice of local Business’, according to its new Chairman, Martin Spurrier.
Village centre regeneration plan previewed at AGM The Chamber has been working with the Horsham District Council (HDC) and other local bodies for some years on a plan to regenerate the Billingshurst village centre and, on 22nd April, an outline was presented at the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting. The work-in-progress draft, entitled ‘Billingshurst Village Centre – Supplementary Planning Document’ (SPD), was commissioned by the Horsham District Council in 2014, and will be subject to consultation later in the year. Once approved by the HDC, the proposals could be funded from £1.72 million that the developers of 475 new homes to be built north-east of the village are obliged to contribute to the community. In his AGM introduction, the new Chairman said, “This is great news for Billingshurst. There have been a number of attempts in the past to revitalise our village centre but there was no money to implement them. The consequent delays have created frustration, particularly among retailers, but now there is light at the end of the tunnel”, he said. Presenting the emerging proposals, Alistair Macdonald, Director of Allies and Morrison, Urban Practitioners, responsible for the SPD, said, “There is a strong desire among the local community and the Horsham District Council to improve the performance and attractiveness of the retail offer, and Billingshurst’s function as a local entre”. He stressed that the plan addresses Billingshurst’s historic setting and listed buildings, and recommends creating ‘a real sense of arrival’, improved retail pedestrian ‘circuits’, better civic spaces, and a diversity of retail floor space and types. A new Executive Committee was also voted in at the AGM.
Chamber honours local Accountant At the start of the AGM, Susan Venturi was awarded Honorary Life Membership of the Chamber. She joined the Chamber of Commerce in 2007 and was elected Vice Chairman or Chairman every year from 2010 to 2014. Lauren Smith (left), Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce’s newly-elected Vice Chairman, and Martin Spurrier (right) Chairman, present Susan Venturi with her Honorary Life Membership
The incoming Vice Chairman, Lauren Smith said, “Under Susan’s leadership the Chamber’s role in the community has grown beyond recognition. Chamber membership has achieved strong growth, and we now represent our members at most local influential bodies including the Parish Council, the Community Partnership, the District Council and the County Council. The highlight of Susan’s tenure has been BilliBiz – The Show, which was her idea and, since 2010, has become one of the leading business shows in the region”. Chamber gives to local charities Each year the Chamber collects small donations from members and guests at its annual car rally, events and its monthly lunch club. At the AGM, the Chamber’s Jayne Todd (left) from Chestnut Tree House, and Rosie Wyer from Dame Vera Lynn Trust (3rd from left) with Sandy Duck and Martin Spurrier of the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce
Secretary and Treasurer, Sandy Duck, presented cheques totalling £324 to its two chosen charities, The Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy and Chestnut Tree House, children’s hospice. Meet Billingshurst Business people The Chamber’s regular networking event, BilliLink Lunch Club, meets monthly so that members and non-members can interact and exchange ideas and self-promote their business services and products over lunch and drinks. The purpose of the BilliBiz Links is to be a business referral forum rather than a ‘talking shop’ gathering, and each month everyone makes a one-minute ‘elevator pitch’ and one member presents his or her business for five minutes. The cost is £10 per head (£12 for non-members). To book, just watch the Chamber website for information or contact the Chamber’s Secretary at 07984 959281 or secretary@billingshurstchamber.co.uk. A small amount is built in for our nominated charities. Martin Spurrier, Chairman

The De-mystification of Email – Part One Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services
J
ust recently we’ve had a spate of clients with a variety of email issues. Setting them up, what type of account to create, how to create an account, synchronising mailboxes and more… Therefore, we thought it might be an idea to do an article on the basics of email. We realise this is a big topic, hence in two parts. What is email? This may seem a bit basic but we speak to lots of people who don’t really know – even though they use email every day. It’s simple – think of your email address like your postal address and your mailbox is the letterbox the mail goes into which you then collect. There are two types of email address: one that has a mailbox, which can receive and store your email and one that is called a forwarder that forwards your mail on. However, just like a PO Box you have to have a proper address somewhere for the mail to actually be forwarded on to. Hotmail and Gmail addresses are actual mailboxes. They are also free and they provide the mailbox space for you (this is actually called hosting and is a separate topic). You can also have email addresses that relate to your own domain name – of course you have to own domain name first and have somewhere to keep it and your mailbox. For example, we own the domain name www.baxcomputers.co.uk and we have several
email addresses e.g. info@baxcomputers.co.uk. The main differences between free services and having your own-domain email address is that you have to provide your own hosting with the latter and you can set your own email address up on your computer using something like MS Outlook or Apple Mail. Well, this was the case until recently. You can now get your Hotmail or Gmail accounts for free on your computer too – but most people we know go through their browser (such as Explorer or Safari) because they don’t know how to do this. To start the setting up process you need to know a few details: 1) the email address, 2) the password for the email account and 3) the details that your hoster has given you so your computer can talk to your specific mailbox such as POP/IMAP/SMTP settings and port numbers. Goobledegook it may sound, but without this information it won’t work. So, if you have an email address you'd like to set up on your computer, take the time until the next article to find those details out from your hoster or free provider. If you already have them and want to get cracking just get in touch and we can pop round and help for a small fee. Part Two: the difference between POP and IMAP and what the heck is SMTP? July Joy for new Billingshurst Fire-fighter
B
illingshurst’s Fire Station’s latest recruit Andrew Buddle (briefly introduced in the May issue) has settled in very well. Andrew is now in the process of a two-year development. Within this time Andrew will undergo further training and exams to become a competent fire-fighter. It’s vital that he studies hard and also picks up experience from fire calls. A special mention to Mike Hartley who has just finished his two-year probation and is now fully competent. This shows that we have a great team on station and Mike will play a key role with Andrew’s development as he can pass on his skills and knowledge. We also have some old hands on station which is so important for the newer recruits to learn new skills and to gain experience within the service. Every call we attend is different which means the job is always challenging, yet rewarding. Last month we received just over 30 calls – a busy month. You just never know when that alerter is going to go off! We have to respond and be
ready to leave the fire station within four minutes, so when it does go off, we have to drop everything and go! A little harder when it’s 3am and we turn up with one sock on and t-shirt back to front! In addition to fires, last month we attended a high number of Road Traffic Collisions, please do be careful on the roads. With the weather turning nice, we all like our days out but don’t let that be ruined by careless driving. And of course, with the warm weather a pub beer garden is tempting but if you are driving, keep off the alcohol! We are making plans for our ‘Open Day’ in September, next month’s piece will have more details. This is a great day organised by us to show the public some live demonstrations on Road Traffic Collisions, Ladder Drills and everyone’s favourite, the Chip Pan display. This is also a chance for you to come and meet the whole crew at Billingshurst Fire Station. Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station

Parish Council News New Council
Flooding Update
The new Parish Council took office on Monday 11 May 2015. At the Annual Parish Council meeting on 20 May 2015, Cllr. Paul Berry was elected Chairman of the Council for a fifth successive year and Cllr. Lesley Wilding was re-elected as Vice Chairman. The Council continues to have a busy schedule of meetings, details of which can be found on its website.
Operation Watershed is a County Council fund for highway drainage and environmental improvements for areas of the county affected by flooding. The Parish Council has recently made an application for funding to clear the ditches in Little East Street and at Daux Road, and to install an alarm on the trash screen guarding the barrel drain under the High Street. The Billingshurst Action Group continues to push flooding high up the agenda of both our District and County Councils and have been instrumental in securing a comprehensive study of the cause of flooding in Billingshurst by Horsham District Council. They are also lobbying Horsham’s newly elected MP to make landowners aware of their responsibilities to keep their ditches running clear.
Road Safety Speed Limit Restriction Requests The Parish Council recently conducted a consultation with residents of the A29 Stane Street and Marringdean Road to gauge support for a speed limit restriction on these roads. There was an overwhelming response in support of speed limit restrictions so the Parish Council is now lobbying West Sussex County Council for a Traffic Regulation Order for these roads. Natts Lane and Silver Lane Parking As a result of the on street parking restrictions in the station area, parking problems have moved further out to Natts Lane and Silver Lane. The Parish Council has received many complaints and been in contact with West Sussex County Council for help to ease the congestion in these areas. West Sussex County Council will be holding a consultation to extend the double yellow lines in these locations. If the consultation is supported by local residents, West Sussex County Council Highways Officers will seek a Traffic Regulation Order to amend the parking restrictions from the North Horsham County Local Committee. These meetings are held in public at County Hall North, Horsham, see their website for meeting dates and agendas at www.westsussex.gov.uk/ about-the-council/how-the-council-works/committeesand-decision-making/county-local-committees/northhorsham-clc High Street Parking The Parish Council has given its support to West Sussex County Council for the use of s106 funding to undertake a feasibility study of parking in the High Street.
New Policing Model Sussex Police has recently unveiled its new Policing Model to 2020 which calls for multi-agency working and prioritisation of crime as the service has to make savings of £65 million over the next five years. The Parish Council is meeting with the Chief Constable to express its concern for the safety of its residents. Billingshurst has seen its Policing cover cut from 2 dedicated Police Community Support Officers to just one who is now shared with Cowfold, Pulborough, Shipley and Thakeham. The Police continue to be supported in our community with the Community Hub at the Billingshurst Centre which is open daily 9.30am – 12.30pm and 2.00pm – 5.00pm Monday to Friday.
Development South of the Village The Parish Council STRONGLY OBJECTED to the planning application for 107 houses on land south of Billingshurst due to lack of capacity on the rail network, poor road network, lack of employment provision and healthcare facilities and most significantly, the likelihood of the development adding to the already constrained surface water drainage system at the southern end of the village. The Council continues to object to the inclusion of Billingshurst for further development in the Horsham District Planning Framework until all the infrastructure shortcomings are resolved.
Next Parish Council Meeting – Wednesday 2nd September 2015 at 7.30pm, Adversane Hall

Our Community Volunteers – meet Robin Chittenden
“I
’ve always been a sucker for helping when I can,” jokes Robin Chittenden, Area Organiser for the Billingshurst Community Minibus. This is borne out by his track record: Robin and his wife Barbara have been active volunteers for several organisations in Billingshurst since the couple moved to the area in the early ’seventies. When their son started Cubs, first Barbara and then Robin became parent helpers, which ultimately led to Robin becoming District Commissioner for Petworth and Pulborough, the summit of his 27-year association with the Scouts, an organisation which he is “hugely proud of and immensely pleased to have taken a role”. His father and sister had also been involved in Scouting, and so it seemed a natural step. He also spent four years as the secretary of the PTA for Billingshurst Junior School, and more recently spent seven years as a church warden for the parish church. It was during his time with the Scouts in the early ’eighties that he discovered that he could borrow the Community minibus once he passed a test and, as he says, he has been driving it on and off ever since. The service itself has been running in the
village for 40 years and is used by member organisations including the Rotary Club, Billingshurst Choral Society and local Scout and Guide groups. It also plays a crucial role for many of Billingshurst’s older residents, for whom it provides regular, affordable transport to Horsham, plus the opportunity for expeditions to Eastbourne, Godalming, Shoreham and Chichester. The bus, manned by a driver and an escort, provides a door-todoor service and can be a lifeline for the many people who attend the fortnightly Seniors’ Lunch at the Community Centre and other gatherings. When asked what the best part of the job is, Robin says simply, “The people. You get to know the many regulars who use the bus and there is a genuine sense of sadness when one of them is no longer able to do so. The minibus is an important and necessary adjunct to general transport in the village”. Minibus enquiries: (01403) 782695.
