Homemade Ice Lollies

D

o you share the same childhood memories of summertime as me? When it got hot, did you take out the ice cube tray, fill it with diluted cordial and eagerly wait for it to set so that you could enjoy impromptu homemade ice lollies? And were you usually disappointed when you came face to face with crunchy, crystallised cubes of weakly flavoured water rather than the delicious, mouth-watering, thirstquenching, temperature-cooling creations you were expecting?! Legend has it that the ice lolly was invented in 1905 by an eleven-year-old American boy named Frank Epperson, who accidentally left a glass of soda with a mixing stick poking out of it on his porch overnight. The next day, he found he had made a delicious frozen treat. Regardless of their origin, homemade ice lollies offer endless possibilities. Orange and lemon, minted milk, strawberries and cream, pineapple and coconut, grapefruit and (for grown-ups!) campari or vodka and tonic are just some of the flavours you could try. To avoid the disappointing results I experienced, here are a few tips to ensure success at the freezer. 1. Deliberately make the mixture too strong. Cold numbs the taste buds, so add extra lemon juice, balsamic vinegar or even chilli to give the lolly oomph! 2. Sugar improves the taste and softens the texture. Too

$ IXQGUDLVLQJ HYHQW LQ DLG RI

little will result in a solid block of flavoured ice; too much will result in a lolly that is partially liquid. Healthier alternatives to sugar include date syrup, honey and coconut sugar. 3. When filling the mould, leave about 5mm at the top to allow the mixture to expand. 4. To make sure the sticks stand upright, freeze for about an hour and then insert the sticks. Alternatively, cover the top of the moulds with foil, make a slit and insert the sticks through it. 5. Fast-freezing reduces the amount of ice crystals. Place the moulds at the back of the freezer where it’s coldest. Lollies on average take around 4-5 hours to freeze but set faster, the higher the water to sugar ratio. And (for grown-ups!) alcohol slows the process, with too much alcohol resulting in a slushy lolly! 6. To un-mould, immerse in hot water for 20-30 seconds. Dip just below the top rim and pull hard on the sticks to yank the lollies out. 7. Store frozen lollies in sealable freezer bags or waxed paper. Make sure they are airtight to prevent ice crystals from forming inside. 8. For super quick lollies, simply freeze pieces of fruit. Cover bananas in peanut butter or chocolate spread before freezing or blend fruit puree with plain yoghurt. Frozen Angel Delight tastes just like mini milks! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Billingshurst Primary School’s pupils don ‘Denim for Dementia’

he pupils and staff of Billingshurst Primary School have been leading the fight against dementia – clad in denim! On Friday 20th May, pupils were invited to come to school dressed in as much denim as possible and donate to an important cause. The day raised £468.14. Organised by the Alzheimer’s Society, the nationwide initiative ‘Denim for Dementia’ was part of Dementia Awareness Week (15th21st May), which aimed to offer support, raise awareness and fund future research. With an estimated 850,000 people in the UK living with some form of dementia, the chances are many of us know someone either suffering from, or caring for loved ones with, dementia. Faced with such statistics, encouraging communities to talk about dementia is more important than ever. In March, Billingshurst Primary School was the first school to become part of the Horsham District Dementia Action Alliance, designed to inspire communities to be dementia friendly and promote the role of the Alzheimer’s Society in offering information and support. At the time, over 600 pupils committed to being Dementia Friends. The first challenge, to dress in denim, was embraced

enthusiastically by all pupils, with some interesting denim-on-denim fashion combinations. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher commented, “This initiative is an important community-wide effort to encourage a greater understanding of the challenges of living with dementia, which is a message we are keen to promote within the school. By openly talking about dementia children have the opportunity to ask questions which in turn promotes empathy, and incites action to help wherever possible. I have been very impressed with the way in which our pupils have addressed this issue and taken part in the fundraising.” If you are interested in becoming a Dementia Friend or helping create more communities that are dementia friendly, go to www.dementiafriends.org.uk to find your nearest information session or to volunteer as a Dementia Friends Champion. Skydive / Health and wellbeing

Take to the skies for St Catherine’s Hospice

S

t Catherine’s Hospice is looking for thrill seekers to fly 10,000 feet through the clouds at speeds of up to 125mph to support their local hospice. St Catherine’s is asking people to commit to skydive on a date of their choice this autumn in aid of their local hospice and to help St Catherine’s celebrate 33 years of supporting terminally ill people in the local community. Your chosen skydive date could be anything – from your birthday to your wedding anniversary. So why not mark an individual date special to you with this unique challenge? If you are brave enough to give skydiving a go, you will take on the challenge at Old Sarum Airfield in Salisbury where you will be strapped to an experienced instructor from GoSkydive and freefall for approximately 30 seconds before your instructor pulls the ripcord and deploys the ’chute. Last year, Michelle Hanley arranged her own skydive to support St Catherine’s. She said, “I’m scared of heights so it was a huge challenge, but it was nothing compared to the bravery that St Catherine’s patients and families face every day. I’m so proud of myself and couldn’t be happier to raise £700 in sponsorship!” Michelle’s incredible effort has made a real

difference to those the hospice cares for. Her sponsorship is enough to fund four patients visiting St Catherine’s Day Hospice for a day and provide a patient or relative with an hour of advice from St Catherine’s specialist Welfare Adviser. Gordon Blamire, founder and Managing Director for GoSkydive, said, “GoSkydive is the only centre that specialises in tandem skydives for first-timers. We always aim to give our customers the best possible experience especially when they’re doing it for such a good cause, and we’re looking forward to helping people raise as much as possible for St Catherine’s while having a really good time!” Whether you’ve taken to the skies before or want to experience the thrill of trying something new, everyone is welcome. All you’ll need is a dare devil attitude! This challenge isn’t for the fainthearted but your bravery will help St Catherine’s to continue to be there to care for patients and their relatives when and Michelle Hanley where they need it most. If you would like to find out more about taking on a skydive for St Catherine’s please contact St Catherine’s Event Team on: events@stch.org.uk or call (01293) 583063. West Sussex Minibus – serving the community for 40 years

T

he West Sussex minibus charity celebrated its 40 years of volunteer activity on 12th May at the Music Room, Champs Hill, Coldwaltham, graciously hosted by the Bowerman Charitable Trust. The charity was also very honoured by the attendance by the Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper, who kindly presented awards to some of the volunteers. Ten of the volunteers receiving awards totalled a combined 300 years of involvement in the charity. The Community Minibus Association (West Sussex) is a registered charity and has been providing door-to-door transport services since its initial service in early 1976. The organisation is unique in that it is run entirely by unpaid volunteers, in varying roles such as drivers, passenger escorts, booking staff, fleet managers, divisional organisers and others who ensure the day-to-day running of the charity. Attendance included President Sir Brian Barttelot OBE, and Vice President Rt Hon Nick Herbert MP, VIPs from local District and Parish Councils, and other local charitable organisations such as Age UK, together with over 100 volunteers from the charity’s eight centres of operation. The service operates in rural West Sussex, using 13

minibuses with centres located in Ashington, Billingshurst, and five villages (south of A27): Petworth, Pulborough, Storrington, Steyning and Wisborough Green. Registered passengers are able to join regular trips to shopping centres, lunch clubs, seaside locations, social events and also to special excursions. Associate membership is also possible for organised groups. Chairman Alistair Sheppard OBE, who conducted the day’s proceedings, reviewing the past, present, and future of the charity, commented that “passengers enjoy our friendly service, and look forward to meeting both new friends and old during their trips. Our tremendous group of unpaid volunteers over 40 years of activity – and hopefully 40 years more – help to maintain our essential support to the local community of rural West Sussex.” Robin Chittenden, Divisional Organiser Photo: Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper who kindly presented awards to some of the charity’s volunteers, together with president Sir Brian Barttelot OBE and chairman Alistair Sheppard OBE

Billingshurst Football Club promoted to Division One

B

illingshurst FC will be playing in Division One of the Southern Combination Football League next season, the first time in their 125-year history that the club will play senior status football. They went into their last game of the season against local rivals Roffey knowing that a win would give them second spot in the division but the league has been that competitive this year, anything other than a win and results from other games could see them finish as low as 5th. As it transpired, the result went against them and they narrowly lost out 3-2 in front of a bumper crowd in excess of 120 people but the SCFL confirmed their promotion just 24 hours later to cap an excellent first season in charge for manager Adie Konieczny and his team. ‘Hurst’ had already done the groundwork in getting things in place to meet the required ground grading standards set by the FA and you will shortly be seeing a perimeter path around the pitch and a new 50-seater stand installed at their Jubilee Fields ground. The next step is floodlights that will allow mid-week evening games. Chairman Kevin Tilley announced, “It’s easy to forget how far this club has progressed in recent times. Only ten years ago our 1st team were playing in

Division Two North of the WSFL, where our 3rd team are currently playing. “It is no accident that the club has progressed in this way and it’s down to the hard work of the managers, players, officials and everyone involved at this football club. We’re appreciative of the backing we’ve had from the Parish Council who’ve supported us all the way but there’s still plenty to do. We look forward to competing in senior football next year but the real hard work starts here so let’s all get behind Billingshurst Football Club.” The club are constantly looking for sponsors and have various packages to suit any budget, from the naming rights on the new stand to individual seat sponsors where a seat in the stand with your name on can be bought for £55. Pitch-side banners are available at £150 and a 100 club will be introduced for the coming season. Anyone who is interested should contact Jan on 07834 786750 or Mark on 07974 117524. Business / About the house

Hello, hello – can you hear me?

‘N

etworking’ used to be just about making connections through wireless and telephone signals, or about gas pipes and electric cables. No more. It’s about business people, usually entrepreneurs or those running small businesses, meeting informally with the aim of expanding their own and each other’s businesses, and having fun doing it. BilliLinks Lunch Club is the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce’s monthly get together when members and their guests do just that. Plus, the Chamber brings an extra dimension through inviting a guest speaker who adds to the mix with a 10- or 15-minute presentation on a topic that will help members’ businesses in one way or another. The Club format was revamped in January, since when speakers have included Jeremy Quin, MP in one of his first engagements after his election as MP for Horsham; member Wendyanne Harrison of Cranfold Physical Therapy Centre on managing stress in the workplace – especially for sole practitioners; EU grants available to small businesses; search engine optimisation (SEO), website design and using video economically. The Billingshurst Chamber was recently accepted as an Affiliate Member of the Sussex Chamber of Commerce and thereby also has a direct association

with the British Chambers of Commerce and its national and global network. There are 37 British Chambers overseas. Ana Christie is Chief Executive of the Sussex Chamber of Commerce and was a BilliLinks guest speaker. Ana has an extensive business track record spanning the airline and hospitality industry, executive recruitment and pharmaceuticals in the UK, India and in the Philippines. She explained, “The connection with the Sussex Chamber brings Billingshurst Chamber members a raft of immediate benefits including access to Sussex Chamber’s surveys and research material, newsletters, events, training courses, and discounts on tailor-made employee health cover schemes and discounted AA Roadside Assistance”. For further information about the Chambers or BilliLinks Lunch club, contact Sandy Duck, on 07984 959281 or email secretary@billingshurstchamber.co.uk. Book reviews / About the house

A Good Read July’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Time Traveler’s Wife – Audrey Niffenegger Published in 2004, Niffenegger’s debut work has become an international bestseller. In 1991 20-year-old Claire is an artist who makes paper sculptures for a living. She bumps into 28-year-old Henry, a librarian at the local library. He has never met her before, but Claire has known him all her life; for Henry is not an ordinary man. He was born with a genetic disorder which causes him to time travel. He has no control over it, and cannot predict how long he will stay in one time. He jumps around his own timeline and experiences events in his own history. So, on this day in 1991 when he and Claire meet, she becomes a part of his experiences and therefore his timeline. He begins to travel within her life and their ‘first’ encounter is when Claire is just six years old. Over his many ‘visits’ as she grows into adulthood they form a close relationship and eventually fall in love. Written in the first person this novel alternates between Henry and Claire. We follow Claire’s timeline chronologically, with a note at the start of each chapter reminding us how old they each are at that point. Henry’s age does of course jump around. Niffenegger wanted to create the perfect soulmate. If that is what Henry is then it explains why Claire spends her life waiting for him to appear in hers. It raises the question of whether a brief moment of pure happiness is worth the pain when that moment is over.

The Raven Queen – Pauline Francis The death of Edward VI at the tender age of 15 saw the throne pass to a Lady Jane Grey, just 16 years old. Jane usurped Edward’s sisters Mary and Elizabeth, but she was merely a pawn in a political game of power. A few days later it was declared that Mary was in fact the rightful queen and Jane was accused of treason. Just nine days after her accession to the throne she was beheaded at the Tower of London. In this novel aimed at young adult readers we learn what Lady Jane Grey’s life might have been like. Published by Usborne books, Francis’ novel takes the real-life Jane and creates a semifictional account of her short life. Jane is a young girl in love with Ned, a Catholic woodsman: a secret and forbidden love. Trapped by her upper-class life, she sees freedom and an escape in Ned. This is just one example of the clever way that Francis weaves the historical factual (Jane) with the fictional (Ned) to provide an insight into this turbulent era of British history. It provides a nice reminder to the young reader that the British monarchy was always the mostly peaceful institution it is today. It is of course first and foremost a fictional novel so there are historical inaccuracies. However, the Tudor period is brought to life in a clever and memorable way. And Jane becomes more than just a footnote in a history book. Note from Village Tweet Editor: “I read The Time Traveller’s Wife when it came out and it’s a beautifully written book, very poignant and thought provoking. Highly recommended!”

Equine / About the house

Summer feeding

N

ow that summer is well and truly upon us the majority of horses will be turned out to pasture full time. Grass is the most natural feed for horses and ponies and is often overlooked by horse owners when planning their horse’s dietary needs. Equines evolved to cover many miles in search of the best grazing and in summer when grass is in abundance they will lay down fat stores to help them through the lean winter months. The modern domestic horse has no need to do this but his body and metabolism are still programmed by nature to act in this way and with modern pasture being much richer, especially on farms that have grazed cattle in the past, it’s easy to see why we can run into problems such as obesity and laminitis so easily. Do I need to feed? This is a common question and a good one. Recent studies show that as many as 50% of equines in the UK are overweight and this is classed as a welfare issue. How much and what you decide to feed your horse or pony will depend on his age, workload and body condition; a broodmare with a foal at foot will have very different nutritional needs from a child’s pony. Most leisure horses will do very well on pasture alone over the summer months and providing a vitamin and mineral supplement or a balancer with a small amount of low calorie chaff will meet their nutritional needs for light work and maintenance. Balancers have become very popular over the last few years as an easy and convenient way to provide the required levels of protein, micro nutrients and amino acids in a small nutrient dense meal, most are pelleted and readily accepted by the horse. There are balancers on the market tailored to suit every equine’s nutritional needs. Good doers and laminitis prone animals will need very careful management over the summer when grass growth is strong, especially during sunny days after some rain. Controlling grass intake for these animals is essential to their wellbeing and condition scoring and weigh taping on a weekly basis will help detect changes before it is noticeable by eye alone. The use of electric fencing and grazing muzzles still allow the horse or pony to be turned out with his friends and also allows for movement which is more beneficial than standing in a

stable for long periods of time. Keep up fibre intake by feeding well soaked old hay in place of grass. If no suitable hay is available there are many laminitis safe, low calorie short chop forages on the market which will be suitable. Never starve a laminitic pony as you will do far more harm than good. On the other hand those horses that tend to be poor doers will benefit enormously from good summer grazing. Careful pasture management can produce an abundance of Dr Green if conditions are right and there’s nothing horses enjoy tucking into so much! Just as you would with a good doer, the use of a weight tape will pick up any changes early on and you will be able to add hard feed if necessary before he loses too much weight. Keeping a poor doer calm and settled helps tremendously too, make sure he is not being bullied by his field mates as stress can lead to weight loss too. With the competition season in full swing don’t be tempted to change your horse’s diet shortly before a show or competition. Planning ahead is the key to good performance so make any feed changes slowly and carefully. It can be tempting to fill up a lay horse with food in the hope of giving him more energy but it doesn’t always work like that! Energy and calories are one and the same and a fat, lazy horse may get even fatter and lazier. What is needed in this case is a proper fitness programme, a strict and sensible balanced diet making sure he has all the micronutrients he needs should help the horse become more energetic. Some horses can become very excitable during spring and early summer when the grass is at its peak growth; some owners find the use of a calmer helps to take the edge off at this time of year – It can certainly make for some very interesting moments! I hope you are having a lovely summer so far. Getting outside and enjoying the company of our horses and ponies now makes the winter seem worth it. Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. Country folk and their sayings… John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

O

ver the years I have come across numerous sayings that are attributed to country ways and country folk. Many are humorous, while some threaten all sorts of dire happenings to the unfortunate who are witness to them. So I decided to have a closer look at a few of them and try and find their source and the truth that may be lurking in their origins… First is that well known saying, “Red sky at night: shepherds’ delight. Red sky in the morning: shepherds’ warning.” This does appear to be more accurate depending on where you live and the wind direction at the time. East to west it’s more likely incorrect, west to east odds on to be correct. Apparently it’s all down to the earth’s rotation! See all those cows laying down in the field? The story goes it’s a sign of coming rain. I reckon it’s just a sure indication that their bellies are full and they are happy. While on the subject of cows, have you noticed that in heavy rain and wind they are inclined to bury their heads in the depths of the hedges and to hell with what’s going on to the bits sticking out behind? Rather like the effects we feel when we are under a brolly and the rain is horizontal. This reminds me that on the farm we have a good view of Petworth Church nestling in the fold of the distant hills. This brings forth the statement, “When you can see the church it’s going to rain, when you can’t, it is raining!” What about those rooks? They say that if they are nesting high it’s a sure sign of a good summer to come. In fact it’s the young birds who nest high because, as the older birds re-use old nests, the higher branches are the only places the youngsters can find to build new ones. Still, it’s a comforting thought in the spring to feel that the birds are promising us a warm and pleasant few months. “Holly full of berries. Must be a hard winter coming.” How on earth does that work? Surely it’s more to do with what the weather was like when the trees were in flower? Never mind, it's a nice thought that a tree may know when the birds may need its fruits for their winter survival. Bees come in for their fair share of folk law too. Most bee keepers will tell you that if you want the bees in your hives to be healthy and stay with you then you must be sure to go to the hive and tell them of any new event that has happened in your family. Why the bees should need this information is not known, but any self respecting apiarist would not hesitate to go and inform them if such an occurrence happens. The old saying goes, “A swarm in May’s worth a load of hay… a swarm in June a silver spoon… and a swarm in July’s not worth a fly.” This still holds good in many ways as a swarm that late in the year would never have time to build up reserves to see it through the winter, so it would need careful and costly feeding

30

through the winter months to ensure its survival. Now, I’m sure many of you in your childhood were told not to pick dandelion flowers as they would make you wet the bed. Go on admit it, that’s what you were told, wasn’t it? Well, there was a ring of truth in that statement as dandelions are in fact a diuretic. Mind you, how they were supposed to work by just picking them is not told. Beside which we were then encouraged to pick the fluffy seed heads and endeavour to tell the time by blowing the little parachutes until they all had flown. By the way… how does nature know that it should plant a batch of dock leaves beside every bed of nettles that it sows, and more to the point, who found out that rubbing one on a nettle sting would ease the pain? This spring also was a good one to test the old saying that, “Ash before oak we are in for a soak… oak before ash will just give us a splash.” This referring to the time the two species come into leaf. Well this year the oak was well ahead of the ash, so let’s see if the coming summer is as good as these two say it should be. The weather seems to be a major factor in many of these old sayings and I guess the reason being that as it played such an important part in everyday life in days gone by, it can be well understood why they should have held so much store by what they observed as they tended their crops and livestock. “Rain before seven, clear by eleven.” Considering that’s a minimum of four hours of solid rain, I reckon the odds are that that one is true! How about a few others that are used by us every day… “Don’t cast a clout till May is out.” Clout being clothing. I think that this refers to May blossom (hawthorn) rather than the month. “Don’t spoil the ship for a ha’p’orth of tar.” Apparently ship here is in fact sheep, and refers to painting wounds on sheep with tar to protect against infection. I was always convinced this meant the tar used in waterproofing a ship. Shows how wrong you can be! “Buying a pig in a poke. A poke is a sack. Someone buying a piglet would have the pig delivered tied up in a poke, but an unscrupulous seller may put a small dog in the sack instead. Hence also, “Sold a pup.” How about “Eating Humble Pie.” In fact this should be “Eating umble pie,” umbles being the offal from deer, etc. The Lords and their Ladies would eat the deer and the lower orders would have the innards for their dinner. Finally, how come we say, “Cock a Hoop”? Apparently in a barrel of ale there would be a wooden tube down at the base. This tube was called the shove and into it was put the bung, also known as the spike or cock. Once the lads got going on a night out and the barrel drained, the cock would be removed and placed on the top hoop that banded the barrel. Hence, when you are having a great time, you are cock a hoop! Fascinating eh? Or are you so “long in the tooth” that you have forgotten? John Nash

Rudgwick man abseils Spinnaker Tower

D

erek Reynolds, a member of Billingshurst Lions Club, abseiled down Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower on 15th May to raise vital funds for the pioneering charity Brain Tumour Research. The abseil was inspired by Amanda Jeffes, Derek and Helen’s daughter who passed away with a brain tumour in May 2014. Derek was joined by 32 others each with their own story, who were also raising funds for the charity. Amanda’s condition was diagnosed in July 2011, when she became very ill while on holiday. She subsequently received three surgeries for recurrent tumours followed with ongoing treatments. She fought for nearly three years but sadly died in 2014. She left two young children age eight and eleven and a wonderful husband. The effect on all the family was unimaginable but as a strong family they have given each other the necessary support. Derek says, “The abseil seemed a challenge that would enable me to raise much needed funding for Brain Tumour Research and in honour of my beautiful daughter who was loved by so many both family and friends.” Derek, a regular Billingshurst Lion, said, “A brain tumour diagnosis is a terrible blow to the patient, their family and friends and I am proud to help fund the fight against this disease which takes children from their parents and parents from their children before their time. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. This is unacceptable. I felt we had to do something to make a difference. The first thing was to get the Government to listen. With the cooperation of the charity and many others an on-line petition was started which raised 120,000 signatures.” The outcome was a debate in Parliament for further

funding for Brain Tumour Research which was attended by Derek and his wife Helen. To date Derek has raised personally more than £2,600 in donations from his contacts but would like to raise further donations. Following the abseil event the Billingshurst Lions Club have given their support and plan further donations and sponsorship hopefully through many other lions clubs nationwide. There is still time to make make a donation: www.justgiving.com/ derek-reynolds2. Crispin Zeeman, Head of Marketing for Brain Tumour Research, said, “We are extremely grateful to Derek and are impressed by his commitment to helping our cause. Such support is vital in order to help us to fund the fight as we work to improve the lives of patients and, ultimately, find a cure for brain tumours.” Brain Tumour Research helps fund an annual £1m programme of research at its Centre of Excellence at the University of Portsmouth. Further partnerships announced last year with Plymouth University, Queen Mary University of London, and Imperial College pave the way for a £20m investment in brain tumour research over the next five years. Ornaments

O

rnaments polarise gardeners. They’re a love ’em or hate ’em subject. I fell firmly into the hate ’em category. I thought they had a place in big country gardens but looked slightly tacky in suburbia. This antipathy may date back to my childhood and Mrs Frost, our elderly neighbour, who had a front garden stuffed to the brim with gnomes, plastic windmills and concrete lions. If our ball ever strayed into this shrine to kitsch she’d burst from her house with a banshee-like scream, brandishing a broom at us. Somewhere along the way though I’ve mellowed. As I’ve studied show gardens and magazines I’ve realised that ornaments have a definite place in a garden as long as two important considerations are met… Context. The ornaments complement the style of the garden. Classical statuary doesn’t work in contemporary spaces, while traditional gardens might need to avoid stainless steel or modern, abstract sculptures. Size. Ornaments should be an appropriate size for the setting. Rules are made to be broken of course and whatever your garden type or size the ornament you choose should be special to you. My father had a grumpy gargoyle-like creature, set among ferns at the bottom of his patch. It made everyone who saw it smile in recognition of my dad’s own avuncular manner. A girly friend of mine has a series of small

bronze fairies set around her tiny plot, which are perfectly in tune with her personality. I favour natural materials myself but several years ago I purchased a beautiful and rather elegant heron created from recycled metal. I adore it because it reflects both my love of birds and my passion for recycling. It stands near a boulder fountain and I occasionally brandish a broomstick at my sons when their football strays too near.

Ornament ideas… and not a gnome in sight! l

To set off ornamental grasses try ceramic balls in vivid blues and greens set among cobbles. l For minimalist contemporary plots, mirrored columns and pyramids look striking. l Classical statuary and urns look best in more formal, traditional settings. They are best made from marble or stone. Resin copies can look tacky. l Don’t be frightened to show your sense of humour. Quirky can look brilliant in the right setting. l Sculptor Dennis Fairweather’s best seller is a stone face and hands which emerge from a tub of water as if the figure had just been for a dip! l Natural materials can be a good starting point for garden ornament novices. Balls and sculptures made from willow are subtle and elegant additions to any garden.

‘Last push’ for canal bridge appeal

A

‘Last push’ appeal is being made to complete a new bridge which will allow a section of historic canal to be re-opened. Wey & Arun Canal Trust is seeking to raise £120,000 to finish the crossing in Alfold, its largest restoration scheme so far in Surrey. With volunteers now busy on the final stages of construction work, the Trust has calculated this amount is needed for the completion of the Compasses Bridge project. The bridge is on the waterway’s Summit Level, at one of the entrances to the Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex. Replacing a 1930s concrete causeway which blocked the canal, it was opened to traffic at Easter. “The Trust is launching this new ‘last push’ appeal so that we can complete this project by the end of the year,” said Trust Chairman Sally Schupke. Work started at the bridge site a year ago and Village Tweet readers have been following its progress. Volunteers are currently laying facing bricks on the concrete shell and demolishing the causeway, with jobs to be finished including landscaping and building a public viewing platform. The bridge will be officially opened on Sunday, 2nd October, as part of celebrations marking the Wey &

Arun Canal’s bicentenary. Around a mile of waterway will be available to navigation by small boats, towards Tickner’s Heath at Dunsfold and going up to the A281 in Alfold. “We hope that the public will respond generously and help us complete the project in 2016,” added Ms Schupke. “Then our teams can move on to the next restoration project and keep up the momentum of bringing a 23-mile green corridor back to life.” Donations can be made via www.weyandarun.co.uk; or by sending a cheque made out to ‘Wey & Arun Canal Trust’ to Compasses Appeal, WACT Northern Office, Bridge End, Somerswey, Shalford, Guildford, Surrey GU4 8EQ. The Trust asks that eligible donors Gift Aid the money they give, which adds 25p from the Government to every £1 – declaration forms available via the website if required. The Wey and Arun Canal Trust is looking for volunteers to run the boat trips from Loxwood in West Sussex along the restored section of London’s lost route to the sea. The boat trips have become so popular that more volunteers are urgently needed to fill the demand for public and charter trips. We have 130 crew volunteers running boat trips raising money for the restoration of this historic canal, but we need more. Skippers and boat crew who drive the boats, operate the locks and are responsible for passenger safety; cabin crew who serve refreshments, cream teas, and chat to the passengers; and maintenance people who can help keep our small fleet operational. Volunteering for the Trust is great fun, and hugely rewarding. You will be contributing to the restoration of local heritage and meeting people from all over the world who enjoy our boat trips. All that’s required is a reasonable level of fitness, a commitment of at least one day a month, weekends or weekdays, and membership of the Wey and Arun Canal which provides insurance cover for the volunteers. A new local environmental initiative

M

arch 11th was the first anniversary of Celtique Energie’s withdrawal of plans to explore for oil and gas on land to the south of Boxal Bridge near Northup Copse. To mark the occasion Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green (KKWG) hosted an event at the Village Hall where over 20 local people from both villages came together to hear a very informative and entertaining talk on local wildlife given by Michael Blencowe, Community Wildlife Officer at the Sussex Wildlife Trust. Michael’s talk reaffirmed that this area of Sussex is still blessed with a high quality environment but this situation must not be taken from granted as oil exploration is but one of a growing number of threats to our quality of life. This event was supported by funding provided by the Arun and Rother Connections group (ARC). The meeting finished with a ‘call to arms’. To protect the local environment better we first need to know what is out there – we need to create an evidence base or inventory of habitats, species and environmental conditions that are important locally. A group is being established by Jill Sutcliffe and

Mike King to develop an ‘environmental map’ of our locality to ensure that when we face the next development threat we have the evidence at our finger tips to ensure that our local quality of life is not compromised. Volunteers to help with this mapping exercise are required. If you would be interested please e-mail or phone Jill (jillsutcliffe1@gmail.com), (01403) 700395 or Mike (mnking23@gmail.com), (01403) 700713. Jill and Mike attended an ARC workshop concerning amphibians on 23rd April. Following presentations in the Pulborough Village Hall we reGreat Crested newt assembled on the nearby RSPB reserve with warm clothes and torches. When water plants have leaves bent back it’s worth having a look and you may well find newt eggs! As it got darker we were very lucky to find examples of all three newts: Smooth, Palmate and the rare Great Crested Newt. Plans include survey work and a talk/guided walk with Jane Wilmott of SWT on 12th August looking for our local bat species using detectors. Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair, KKWG. Tel: (01403) 700395

The benefits of animal physiotherapy

D

id you know that rehabilitation is becoming one of the fastest growing sectors of veterinary medicine? If your pet is struggling after an accident, surgery or the general old age wear and tear of the body, physiotherapy can be a decisive factor in aiding its recovery. In order to ensure successful outcomes of physiotherapy, it is important that certain principles are observed. The most important principle is that the physiotherapist seeks a referral of the treating Veterinary Surgeon. A diagnosis of an injury or illness can only be made by a qualified and registered Veterinary Surgeon. The overall outcome of physiotherapy treatment tends to be better the sooner the physiotherapy is carried out, after injury or surgery. The main objectives of physiotherapy are to: •  Eliminate the cause of the dysfunction, •  Improve the clinical signs, •  Alleviate pain, •  Reduce inflammation, •  Prevent/minimize muscle wastage as well as wastage to ligaments and tendons •  Enhance general overall fitness and wellbeing. Following diagnosis, the veterinary physiotherapist’s

role is to return the individual to full and pain-free health. The physiotherapist will use their knowledge and the application of correct physiotherapy and rehabilitation techniques to enable the animal to recover and lead a full and comfortable life. One of the most commonly treated conditions is Osteoarthritis (OA). This is a painful, degenerative disease, which affects the animal’s joints causing them to become inflamed and painful. This in turn causes low levels of activity, stiff movement, and obvious lameness. Older dogs are at high risk of this disease as are dogs that have been through orthopaedic surgeries. Following veterinary referral for arthritis, your pet may be able to benefit from the skills of a veterinary physiotherapist who can treat their affected joints, carry out suitable exercises as well as devise a treatment and lifestyle plan that will help you and your pet in your everyday home routines. There are many conditions that would benefit from physiotherapy. It can also be used in competition animals to keep them in top condition. Get in touch with your vet or physio to see if it could benefit your pet. Kerrie Bainbridge, Pg Dip A Phys, RVN, Cert Ed, MASSVAP, Veterinary Physiotherapist

Fire-fighters ask, “Is the BBQ season here?”

W

ith a nice spell of warm weather during early May and continuing into June, many people are getting excited about using their new barbecues! Cooking on a barbecue should be a safe and enjoyable experience but it’s all too easy to be distracted when you have friends and family around you while cooking your bangers and burgers. To avoid injuries or damage to property, follow these simple precautions: •  Make sure your barbecue is in good working order. •  Ensure the barbecue is placed on a level site, well away from a shed, fence, trees, shrubs or cars. •  Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area. •  Never leave the barbecue unattended. •  Keep a bucket of water nearby for emergencies. We have a great website which includes information on the safe operation of gas barbecues, caravanning and building open fires while camping. Please visit www.fireservice.co.uk/safety for

more details. During the dry summer months, large areas of heathland, forestry and grassland can become tinder dry and so very susceptible to catching fire. These fires can start in a number of ways. It could be a carelessly discarded cigarette or match, a bonfire or barbecue that gets out of control or even in some cases, these fires are started deliberately. Did you know that it is illegal to light a fire or barbecue on most heathlands without the permission from the land owner? Litter could also be a problem as a discarded glass bottle could magnify the sun’s rays and cause a fire to start. An update on the station: we have a few new recruits in the process of joining. They are at the very early stages so I will give a proper update in the coming months. Fire calls are keeping us busy and remember if you see us driving around, don't be shy and give us a wave! Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station Photo: Never place your barbecue near a building

Horsham Council announces new summer activities for children and young people

H

orsham District Council’s Sports Development team is pleased to launch its 2016 summer programme of events for children and young people which are all detailed in its latest free guide to sports and activities, Up4it. This free publication contains information about a host of opportunities to be active and to have fun. It is distributed through schools, leisure centres, libraries and other community outlets and is available online at www.hdsd.org.uk. Commenting on the range of activities on offer, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen said, “I am delighted to see such a broad range of activities, both sporty and creative, being made available to the young people of our district. As ever, there will be lots going on in the school holidays to ensure parents have plenty of affordable opportunities for their children to enjoy in a safe environment. I would encourage as many as possible to take advantage of all the great activities they can try.” Some of this summer’s activities include: •  Minibus excursions to Guildford Spectrum for ice skating and swimming and the Blacklands Farm outdoor education centre in East Grinstead for climbing, abseiling and archery. •  There’s also a wide range of sports provided at the Forest Recreation Centre in the form of sport and art camps, workshops, Active Sport Days, football camps and minisport camps for 5-7 year olds. American Sports Camps will focus on sports popular across the Atlantic and aim to attract a slightly older clientele. For the more artistically inclined, look out for the Summer Dance Day catering for junior and youth age groups. Art and craft specialist, Annalees Lim will input into the

44

sport and art camps so that children who like making things will be in their element. •  The council’s Sports Development team’s outdoor pursuits specialist, Nick Scott – Horsham’s answer to Bear Grylls – is also going to be a busy man running archery sessions, cycling skills days, mountain bike expeditions, Holmbush Farm activity days and adventure days at Stanford campsite near Pease Pottage. •  Cottesmore Junior Golf Academy and the MY Golf Academy at Horsham Golf and Fitness are providing lots of opportunities whatever the age, ability and experience level of your child. Cottesmore is also running new programmes targeting ladies, so mums please note, we’re not just keen to keep your kids happy! •  Our partners in the local tennis world have plenty to offer in the school holidays. Horsham Tennis Club’s professional coach, Glyn Jukes is keen to launch some more budding tennis careers through his annual summer courses and Lower Beeding based coach, Michelle Collins is also running junior fun weeks at village based clubs, most notably Partridge Green. •  In addition to the council’s own football days, there’s lots of other high quality football opportunities for kids to take advantage of. Chelsea Football Club is operating courses at Collyer’s College. South Coast Sports and Charities Group will be offering skills coaching (including specialist attention for goalkeepers) and matchplay fun at Holbrook Primary School in North Horsham. •  Triathlons will also be organised for Horsham Park, Billingshurst and Steyning to test the physical and psychological mettle of the district’s youth. •  Stoolball England is keen to attract more children to benefit from its summer holiday academy running at Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club . •  South Coast Sports and Charities will also be running junior fencing days at Holbrook Tithe Barn. To read about these opportunities in full detail, pick up a copy of the summer term Up 4 It! brochure distributed through schools, leisure centres and other community outlets or visit www.hdsd.org.uk (Click on Support Services then Promotion and Publicity) Heather Pepper, Horsham District Council

Weald School gains Investors in Careers status for sixth time

A

s an outstanding school, The Weald School is thrilled to be celebrating winning Investors in Careers status for the sixth time running. This award – held since 1999 – is testament to the hard work and dedication of the students and staff. The Award is a quality standard for the management of Careers Education and Guidance (CEG) in Schools and FE Colleges and is now the most widely used quality award of its kind, recognised nationally. Use of an independent external assessor gives the award special credence. This is indeed impressive, as since the last award date three years ago, Careers Education has seen many significant changes. Staff have worked hard to embrace these developments by coming up with innovative ideas to support students in their choice of career options. The Assessor was in the school on 16th March, to see how much of an impact some of those changes have had. Conversations with staff and students on the day demonstrated that there are many excellent things happening in careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) at The Weald School. The Assessor was particularly impressed with the school’s wellplanned, differentiated and varied programme of careers education and events available to all students and commented on well-developed links with local businesses and employers. The Assessor met with members of the Senior

Leadership Team including Mr Woodman and Mrs Edwards, along with Careers Manager Mrs Wilson, Business Manager with responsibility for Careers Mrs Durham, Teacher with Careers responsibility Mrs Smith, PD teachers, Students from across KS3 & KS4 and our outgoing Link Governor Patrick Perks and our incoming Link Governor John Griffin. She was extremely impressed with the support and team effort approach the management team and governors have towards the careers department and indeed, to careers education as a whole. A significant strength of the careers programme, as seen by the Assessor, was the involvement of parents, governors and a range of local employers who give their time to support the Careers work in the school. She commented that such commitment is to be highly praised and is a further demonstration of the importance The Weald places in raising aspirations for its students and how successful the school is in achieving these goals. We are very grateful to all our parents, governors and local links for the great support they give us and hope that they will celebrate this award as we do. Message from the Chairman… It was an honour in May to be elected Chairman of Billingshurst Parish Council for the 6th consecutive year. In May 2015, in line with a majority of Parish Councils in the Horsham District, there was an uncontested election as only 10 people stood for the 15 places on the Council. This was unsurprising as we all live increasingly busy lives and many of us are already involved in community life in other ways. I am delighted to say that volunteers have come forward throughout the past year and that there is now only one vacancy. Currently, the Council has a really good mix of experienced and new Councillors and we would welcome the opportunity to fill the remaining place; if you are interested please contact the Parish Office for more details. The Council was sorry to hear that its Parish Clerk, Beverley Bell, has decided to move on to pastures new, we do of course wish Beverley well in her new position. The Council has embarked upon the process of recruiting a new Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer and asks for your patience at this time if queries are not dealt with as speedily as normal. In May, I was delighted to be presented with a tree which was given to the community by the Billingshurst WI to mark 100 years of the Woman’s Institute. The tree, an Amelanchier, now stands proudly outside of the Billingshurst Community and Conference Centre (see photo). It was also a pleasure to present Billingshurst Bowling Club with a cheque for £500 towards new equipment; this long established village club welcomes members of all ages and abilities and is an asset to the

community. Talking of assets to the community many of you will know Jenny Kerns and Pam Goldsmith. They have recently decided to stand down from their positions with the Billingshurst Macmillan group after many years of service although they still plan to be involved in the group. Jenny and Pam were awarded the Macmillan Regional Winner of the Fundraising Group/ Committee Award in London and South East England for exceptional achievement through teamwork. The Council could not let their dedication and hard work go un-recognised so in May sent them both bunches of flowers and letters of thanks for all they have done for their community. The Council was recently contacted by a gentleman who lives in Devon who wanted to donate a grand-father clock to the Council. The clock is by D. Baker of Billingshurst. In the late ’60s and ’70s, the gentleman used to pass through Billingshurst on the way to visit relatives and purchased the clock from an antique shop in the High Street. We would love to know more about the history of the clock and of D. Baker. I would like to congratulate Billingshurst Football Club, who after promotion will now be playing in Division 1 of the Southern Combination Football League next season, the first time in their 125 year history that the club will play senior status football. Billingshurst Parish Council is pleased to be supporting the Football Club by giving its blessing to some additions needed at Jubilee Fields. Paul Berry, Chairman.

Public Access Defibrillators Billingshurst Parish Council has set up Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) sites in Five Oaks and Adversane. They are available 24/7 and the ambulance service have their details logged on their system so people can be directed to the if required. Although they are very simple to use and require no training to do so, the Parish Council has funded room hire for the Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team (BEAT) to offer training in basic life support, including CPR and the use of defibrillators. These are free sessions and last around 2 hours. In order to help plan the next session, if you are interested in attending please contact me at paul.berry@billingshurst.gov.uk or on 07437 287241. The sessions are open to anyone in the community and not just those who live near PAD sites. I would like to thank local builder Mike Lord, who kindly offered to install the defibrillator cabinet at Five Oaks free of charge. I would also like to thank the owner and manager of the premises at Watson Cars in Five Oaks for allowing the defibrillator to be sited there and to Hannah Alsbury-Morris from BEAT for all her assistance. Parish Council Meetings: Wednesday 6th July. 7.30pm, Billingshurst Centre Wednesday 7th September. 7.30pm, Adversane Hall

Our Community Volunteers – Monday Lunch Club

E

very fortnight at Community Centre around 30 of Billingshurst’s older residents gather for the Monday Lunch Club, which provides an opportunity for companionship, good food and entertainment. Those without transport are collected in the community minibus from their homes and taken home afterwards. The lunches, which are organised by a team of local volunteers led by Sandy Duck and Sue King, originated about 12 years ago as an initiative of the Billingshurst Community Partnership and have proved popular ever since. Lunch consists of soup, cooked by Whispers, with rolls provided by Jengers Craft Bakery followed by a pudding and tea. After lunch there is either a speaker (these have included, for example, an RSPB representative and a local gardener) or an activity – when I attended everyone was decorating hats to wear for the 1940s tea party planned for the Queen’s birthday weekend. The volunteers, some drawn from the Family Church and St Mary’s, others from the village and beyond, variously set up, serve, clear up and cook

puddings for the lunches or even bake cakes to celebrate birthdays. Others drive the minibus or act as escort to help people on and off the bus, and all of them get to know the seniors who attend the events. Some of the volunteers have been helping since the enterprise started, and their efforts are greatly appreciated by the seniors with whom I spoke. When I asked one lady what she enjoyed about it, she replied, “Everything!” All seniors enthuse about the chance to get out and see other people, to enjoy a meal that they might not be able to prepare for themselves at home, to have transport to make everything straightforward and above all the friendly and kind treatment by the volunteers. More volunteers are needed, so if you have a little time to give each month and would like to help out in any way, please contact Sandy Duck on 07717 822804.
