Potato Salad

A beautiful version of this classic dish

Preparation time: 15 mins Cooking time: 15 mins plus cooling time Serves 4

METHOD

1. Boil the potatoes in salted water for 15-20 minutes until tender. 2. While the potatoes are boiling place the Dijon mustard and the red wine vinegar into a bowl and whisk them together, then whisk in the oils. 3. When the potatoes are cooked cut the smaller ones in half and the larger ones into quarters. Pour over the dressing, mix well and leave to cool. 4. Mix the remaining ingredients with the mayonnaise but reserve a few of the herbs for garnish. 5. When the potatoes are cool, drain off any surplus vinegar dressing then toss them in the mayonnaise. 6. Serve garnished with the reserved herbs.

Are you planning your picnic yet? Second local music and dance festival – Lark in the Park 2018 Station Road Gardens, Billingshurst, Sunday 22nd July, 2-6pm

uilding on the success of last year, preparations are underway for Lark in the Park 2018. We hope you will be able to join us on Sunday 22nd July for an afternoon of entertainment, from 2 to 6 and perhaps beyond. There will be some old favourites and some new acts, with something for everyone to enjoy. Singing, music, dancing – good old fashioned family fun – Billingshurst has certainly got talent! Two local bands – Corvette and Growler will perform; there will be dancing displays from the students of VMA Dance School; Billingshurst’s King of Swing, Rob Nicholls and several other solo acts and duets yet to confirm. We hope to make Lark in the Park an annual calendar fixture on the last weekend before the schools finish for the holiday break to really celebrate the start of summer. Bring a picnic and

chairs or blankets to sit on and enjoy our beautiful park while being entertained. There will be a refreshment van – hopefully a return visit to Billingshurst from Alice and The Little Café Company. There will also be soft drinks, plant and cake stalls (donations welcome) and of course The Railway Tavern is only a few metres away and will provide plastic glasses so you can take your drink back to the park. We aim to raise money for further development of the park and to make a donation to local charity, Chestnut Tree House. And if anyone would like to help maintain the park and come to help at any time before or after Lark in the Park we would be very glad to hear from you. No previous experience necessary. Billingshurst Wine Circle Quarterly Report

e held our annual beer evening in March, with Mike and Keith from Riverside Brewery. They are quite a small business which only started in 2015, but despite there being over 80 small breweries in Sussex, they appear to have found their niche in the market. We started with their session brew, Beeding Best (blue top), followed by Rambling Monarch (purple), a summer seasonal beer, and Steyning Stinker (turquoise), which was the affectionate name the local regular steam train was known by, before Dr Beeching got his hands on it. After the break for a ploughman’s supper, we resumed with the Sneaky Steamer (red label), and finished with Tubbers’ Tipple (yellow) which has a very pleasant hint of honey in the taste. Mike and Keith were very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, but what was really striking was how much they seemed to enjoy their job. The Circle was taken off the beaten track by Richard Ambridge in April, with an ecelectic selection of wines. The grape Pansa Blanca from Raventos d’Alella was our opener – this is one of the grape varieties used in Cava, somewhat similar to Vinho verde. Next an even drier wine from Chile using the Pedro Ximenez grape. Our third wine was a white rioja. After the break (including some fabulous

mackerel päté) came the reds starting with an Australian wine using the Nero D’Avola grape from Sicily (an unusual grape in Oz). For our fifth offering we tasted a limited edition wine which had been produced of the Finca Decero Remolinos Vineyard mini ediciones from the grape Petit Verdot. Finally a red from Hungary – Sauska Cabernet Franc – at £25 per bottle, individual taste must decide whether it was worth that! We had a jolly good evening with a highly entertaining and very knowledgeable speaker who left us with the thought that Malbec has 40 different names. We tasted wines which, left to our own devices, the majority of us would never have tasted, really fulfilling our club’s ‘mission statement’. May saw the first presentation for the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Circle: Eddie and Linda Stevenson. As the wines were poured, we were given information on the country and grape varieties while members had to decide which supermarket they came from, together with price and aromas. Support when it’s needed most

t St Catherine’s Hospice more than 1,000 volunteers donate their time to support their local hospice including Dorinda Gossage, who volunteers as a Support Visitor. Dorinda visits people who know they’re going to die or who are bereaved, in their own homes. To mark the recent national Volunteers Week (1st-7th June), she shares more about her voluntary role. I offer people a safe place to open up As a Support Visitor I walk beside people and offer them a safe place to open up without any judgement or prejudice. At St Catherine’s we don’t treat people as if all that matters is that they’re going to die. We teach people how to live and remind them that life can still be fulfilling even with a terminal illness. I don’t give advice. I’m just there to listen When I first visit people, naturally, they’re nervous but with encouragement they’re usually glad to open up. I talk with people about good things in their lives as well as about things that are worrying them. Often people don’t want to talk to their family and friends about their worries, because they don’t want to upset them, but people can be more honest with me as I’m a stranger. Generally, people find it hard to talk about death and bereavement And everyone responds in different ways. Sometimes people tell me they’re feeling angry, while other people describe feeling numb or sad. One lady I visited had a partner who was dying. She confided in me that she was struggling to cope but my listening helped her to normalise and work through her feelings. Another gentleman used our time together to plan his funeral. This brought him comfort as he knew his family wouldn’t be left to

make decisions at a difficult time. Many of the bereaved people I visit talk about feeling guilty that they weren’t there when their loved one died. They obsess over the person’s death and how it happened but I remind them that everything they did for, and with, the person during their life is the important thing. Sometimes helping people to refocus on the times they were there for someone, before and during their illness, allows them to experience a natural sense of rebalancing between one moment and a lifetime of moments. This can often ease their feelings of guilt. It’s a privilege to volunteer I’m proud to work with St Catherine’s and I’ve learnt so much from the hospice’s Patient and Family Support Team. Their training is first rate and they’re really supportive. St Catherine’s is a wonderful place and volunteering has allowed me to grow personally. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. There’s still more to do though There’s always a waiting list for our Support Visitor service and as soon as our sessions with someone finish we start visiting someone new. We provide people with extra support when it’s needed most and I wonder who people would turn to without us. Nobody should face death and dying alone. We all have a responsibility to make sure they don’t. Please do what you can to support St Catherine’s. How you can give ‘Bags of Help’ to popular village film society

he Mary How Trust Film Society is one of the good causes that Tesco customers are supporting through the Bags of Help initiative in July and August. When you make a purchase at your local Tesco store in Billingshurst, Pulborough or Storrington you can ask for a blue token at the checkout and vote for your favourite good cause. At the end of the two-month voting period, grants will be awarded to the good causes according to the votes they’ve received. The Mary How Trust Film Society brings films to the heart of the community and raises funds to give local men and women a healthier future. It is the longest running cinema for charity in West Sussex. And it is understood to be the only one where 100% of the profits go to charity. All proceeds from the Film Society go to the Mary How Trust for Cancer Prevention. Living in a rural area means many people miss seeing films on the big screen. The Mary How Trust Film Society was launched in 1994 to address this, and is a much-loved community event, based in West Chiltington with around 100 people attending each month from the surrounding

areas. Films are screened at 7.30pm on the 4th Tuesday of the month. (www.westchiltvillagehall.org/ mary-how-trust-film-society) The monthly film evenings offer a traditional cinema experience with a large screen, first class projector, and Dolby surround sound, giving a top quality vision and sound experience. My Three Angels: ‘Community theatre at its best’

n the quaintly historic Women’s Hall in Billingshurst on a warm evening in early June, it is perhaps not too much of a stretch to imagine oneself in French Guiana in 1910, the setting for My Three Angels, presented by the Billingshurst Dramatic Society… It is Christmas Eve and the action takes place in the general store in a convict colony, where the incompetent storekeeper, Felix Dulay (Chris Donovan), his harassed wife (Denise Robinson) and love-struck daughter (Maddy Gilmore) are facing an uncertain future, but have the good fortune to have three convicts working on their roof. Initially a source of fear to the family, the convicts are drawn into the Dulays’ lives and concerns, and delightedly accept the invitation to spend Christmas Eve at the store. Their subsequent actions that night change a number of lives forever. After a slightly slow start, the arrival of the three convicts picked up the pace. All dressed the same, but with distinct personalities from the beginning, we meet pragmatic and fatherly Jules (Trevor Bishop), the impetuous, romantic Alfred (Will Gooda), and their kindly leader Joseph (Peter Burton). The play flowed well from this point and all the actors interacted naturally, relishing the humour of the piece and

bringing out the irony of the benevolent intervention by two murderers and an embezzler in the complicated lives of respectable people. The arrival of Gaston (John Pounder), the killjoy uncle who controls the purse strings, and his put-upon nephew (Ben Howarth) bring the situation to a head, but the convicts led by Joseph deal effectively with them and the more minor problem of non-paying customers (Caro Anderson). The cast worked well together and produced a convincing and entertaining show under the direction of Bex Thurston, with stand-out performances from John Pounder as a pleasingly unpleasant villain, and from Peter Burton whose ease in the role was enjoyable to watch and drew out the best from his co-actors. Coupled with a warm welcome and a responsive full house, it made for an excellent evening of community theatre at its best, and well worth the ticket price. The Film Photography Exhibition by NEG35 Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, now open, closes 11th August

he Film Photography Exhibition at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery will display the work of both Paul Holmes and Sarah Ash. Paul and Sarah, the founders of NEG35 Film Photography, are based in Crawley. They are film enthusiasts who like nothing more than going out and shooting film. In this digital age you might wonder who shoots film anymore? However, film is making a surprising comeback with the younger generation who are discovering it for the first time, and with the older generation rediscovering old cameras that have been gathering dust in a long forgotten drawer. Paul and Sarah aim to spread the joy of film through The NEG35 Society (so called because most film is shot on 35mm negative, becoming a positive image once developed). The society hopes to bring together photographers of all ages, from all backgrounds (both hobbyist and professional), to explore a wide range of photography styles and to express their creativity and enjoy this voyage of rediscovery together. Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work covers many fields of interest but has an emphasis on street photography and images of people going about their everyday

lives. You will see photographs from his recent trip to China along with more local images. Sarah expresses her inspiration via the medium of film, poetry and multimedia, creating artwork with no digital intervention. Both photographers use photographic film and wet printing to create stunning images with the aid of light sensitive paper, chemical processes, and passion. No digital enhancement or processing is used to produce the pictures you see, even the poems seen are printed using darkroom exposure overlays or occasionally, a typewriter. In the exhibition both artists use additional text to explain their passion, inspiration, techniques. They also invite us to watch a video showing the darkroom developing processes used to create the final prints on display. The Film Photography Exhibition runs until Saturday 11th August. ‘In the Jungle’ Record £7700 raised at Slinfold School’s Summer Fair

linfold CE Primary and Pre-School are delighted to announce a record-breaking ‘In the Jungle’ themed Summer Fair for 2018! Thank you so much to everyone who came along and joined us for our most successful year ever – we all had a fabulous time and hope you did too. Our plants and cake stalls were hugely popular as usual, and our attendees certainly appreciated the professional bar and barbecue! Our band ‘Doomsville’ was super and the fabulous weather was the icing on the cake.

Our magician and balloon modeller entranced the children, who also had a huge range of activities to choose from, while the parents spent record amounts on the Barrow of Booze! We improved on our previous record for fair takings by £500, raising £7700 profit for our school, which is amazing for a school with only 150 pupils! “W

hy do you have 9632 emails in your inbox?” I looked at my husband, “Um… is that a lot? How many are in your inbox?” “About twenty,” he replied. I looked at my inbox. There were emails I had meant to deal with, emails from clients and the children’s schools with information I needed; there were timesensitive offers I’d never got around to investigating, endless updates from the social media sites I subscribed to, and the rest I’d kept just in case, of what I’m not entirely sure. I wondered idly if there was such a thing as being an e-mail hoarder. I clearly had a problem and I needed to act. I paused my work and began to sift through the backlog. An hour later I’d made little progress. “Just delete the lot,” said my husband. “It’ll be like ripping off a plaster. The anticipation is the worst bit.” Could I do that? It was tempting. But I paused. I couldn’t. I did have a problem! I decided to compromise. I kept the last month’s emails and deleted everything else. EVERYTHING. WOW! It did feel liberating. I looked at my almost-empty inbox. It felt so good I quickly went through the month’s worth of emails I’d kept, and deleted anything I knew I’d never get around to answering. I replied to and actioned e-mails which required a response, then deleted them too. But while I was working, five new e-mails arrived and in the back of my

mind I knew how easily those five would become fifty, and then five thousand. I needed to futureproof my inbox! I decided I’d set aside fifteen minutes once or possibly twice a day to deal with e-mail. If I needed to save information I would file it in a folder on my laptop. Then once a month I would quickly go through the inbox and delete anything else that I knew would never be actioned. To be honest that’s been the hardest part. I feel genuine anxiety about deleting emails. FOMO (fear of missing out) is a real problem for many people with e-mail issues. So many e-mails are ‘offers’. What if that amazing offer never comes up again? Believe me, a quick trawl through my Trash folder (where my thousands of e-mails now lay, prior to clearing this folder too) indicates they do. Frequently. What’s more, these ‘offers’ are often time-sensitive yet we hang on to them ‘just in case’, then miss the deadline anyway and still don’t delete them. I found it useful to cap my e-mails at 50 and I now use an e-mail system to filter school emails into a separate inbox, so I can see at a glance when Dress like a Roman day or Bring an onion to school day (yes really) is coming up! Your system might be different; the trick is to create one to suit your own personality and routine. I feel more in control and organised now I’m on top of my inbox. Billingshurst Primary School’s Pupils design Showhome Garden for Devine Homes

he pupils at Billingshurst Primary School were set a task by Devine Homes to use their imagination to create a garden for their new show home at Hammond’s Mill, Amblehurst Green, Billingshurst. The children diligently sat down to the challenge and created gardens that so wowed the team at Devine Homes that it was difficult to pick just one winner. From bug hotels and chocolate fountains, to mazes, trampolines and orange shaped treehouses, the creativity would have impressed Alice in Wonderland. The winner of the competition was Hattie in Reception, who will see her design come alive at the show home garden in spring 2019. The design included a beautiful drawing of a family of gnomes, which the judges really liked. There was a winner in each group as the judging was a near impossible task, with entries from almost every child in the school. The runners up impressed the judges at Devine Homes with a variety of designs, including coloured cobblestone paths, a toy car racetrack around the perimeter of the garden, pebble paths giving the garden a stately home feel, water features, a vegetable garden, a sparkling fish pond and chalk paving to football goals. A plan to deploy Neighbourhood Wardens in the Parish is nearer to fruition, following a very successful recruitment drive. Over 20 applications were received for the two positions, and 5 candidates were selected for interview by representatives from the Parish and District Council. Clerk Greg Burt said â&#x20AC;&#x153;All 5 were superb and we would have been happy with any of them, the standard was that high, but that actually made it all the more difficult to choose. After considerable deliberation, we chose two, who, together, will make an excellent team.â&#x20AC;? The successful candidates are now working their notice and have to undergo suitable training, so we hope to see them out and about in the community over the course of the summer.

Judges from South & South East in Bloom will be inspecting Station Road Gardens and the centre of the village on Monday 2nd July. Whilst we are sure the judges will like what they see, any help you can give to pick up litter and pull up weeds will be appreciated.

Works to replace one of the wooden footbridges towards the rear of the Skatepark and further works to widen and improve the surface of the pathways at Jubilee Fields are due to take place over the course of the summer.

In most cases a pleasant informal approach to the person responsible can resolve the matter without need for a formal complaint. Please also be careful leaving windows open as it allows easy access for intruders.

Please be aware that some areas may be inaccessible for a short time whilst these enhancements take place, but the council is confident that the upgrades will lead to great improvements generally for users of the site.

Finally, if you plan to be away from home for a period of time please ensure that you have a nominated neighbour or contact for your burglar alarm.

WSCC has asked us for details of flooding in the village on Thursday afternoon 31st May.

Following an appeal through Village Tweet for volunteers to start to tackle some of the untidy parts of the parish, for example overgrown hedges, footways and footpaths, plus obstructed signs etc., a small team is going to be tackling a few tasks in the coming weeks in Station Road and Stane Street near to The Weald School.

The Weald Year 13 Leavers’ Day

he sun shone down on Friday 18th May as The Weald Sixth Form waved goodbye to over 160 year 13s. The outgoing prefect team organised a day of dressingup and fun and everyone entered into the spirit of the celebrations. Outfits ranged from bananas to unicorns with garden gnomes in wheelbarrows and air hostesses pulling trolleys adding to the colourful array. Tom Backshall, Director of KS5 said, “It was fantastic to have the opportunity to spend time with year 13 reminiscing about their time at The Weald and reflecting on how

much they have changed during their time in the sixth form. The costumes hit a new high this year!” The whole year group joined together for breakfast and photos followed by a final assembly comprising lots of memories and plenty of embarrassing photos detailing their time at The Weald. The day ended with a return to childhood as students played on massive inflatables on the field before leaving to prepare for their A level exams and life beyond! Springbok Model Boat Club (SMBC) This small model boat club is based on the lovely Springbok Estate near Cranleigh, close to Dunsfold Aerodrome where BBC’s Top Gear is recorded. It is a sociable gathering of people who share an interest in radio-controlled model boats of all types. We normally meet on Friday mornings at the lake on the ‘Care Ashore’ Seamen’s Retirement Home on the estate. We have use of the lake, bar facilities (when open) and toilets 7 days a week. Free parking is close by. Normally we sail our models for about three hours before adjourning to the bar for refreshment. A number of events are held in the region each year which are open to the public, including the Alfold Show in June where we have a stand. The club is open to new members where the cost is only £25 per annum. Members are very friendly and will offer every assistance to those starting out or who simply wish to try out a boat. Anyone interested in joining can simply come along and introduce themselves any Friday morning. If the pond appears deserted, due to heavy rain for example, you will probably find a Clive Cooper small group of us at the bar.

Former Billingshurst Primary School pupil presents current Year 6 with SATS Breakfast

uelled with a healthy breakfast, Billingshurst Primary School’s Year 6 pupils have received the best possible start to their week of SATS exams, thanks to the generosity of their local Sainsbury’s store in Billingshurst High Street. For the fourth consecutive year, Sainsbury’s has provided a nutritious boost in the form of a tasty breakfast for 90 children. The tasty spread was presented by Tom Hadlow, a former pupil, who is currently training to be the local Store Manager. The link between good nutrition and its impact on our ability to concentrate is well documented, so the breakfast from Sainsbury’s provided a valuable opportunity for the students to eat well while taking the time to relax together before a busy day of exams. After a week of hard work, the pupils received a special treat of sausage sandwiches and ice lollies on the final day. The children were also rewarded with an exclusive ‘SATS pack’ from the Billingshurst branch of Coco’s Hairdressers, containing stationery and books to help with exam preparations.

The Weald’s Talented Young Footballer

ynn Talley in year 10 at The Weald School is showing great promise with his outstanding goalkeeping skills in football. Fynn joined Brighton and Hove Albion football club in September 2017, and was offered a long-term contract and scholarship which will commence when he leaves school, allowing him to pursue his ambition of becoming a professional footballer. Fynn currently represents England at u16 level (a year above his actual age group). He has played in numerous competitions and tournaments over the past four years and when he played for the Arsenal u14s in 2017, his team won the Albert Phelan Cup. He was in the squad for games against Turkey and Romania in August 2017 and for the Nike International Tournament in Florida in December against the USA, Brazil and the

Netherlands, making his debut and winning his first cap against the Netherlands. Finn has won a Set for Success award this year. Set for Success is a Horsham district charity that aims to encourage and support young sports people in achieving their goals (no pun intended!) of becoming champions of the future. He was nominated by Mr Healy, head of Livingstone house and u19 football manager at The Weald School, who said, “Fynn has worked incredibly hard in the last three years and this is clearly paying off. He has natural talent, but also has a drive and determination that has taken him to the next level.” Fynn will be attending the Set for Success presentation evening in the autumn. A Good Read July’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress – Dai Siji This is a remarkable little book, considered by many to be a modern classic – so much so that it has already found itself on some GCSE English Literature syllabuses. Don’t let it put you off though. I really urge you to give it a try – after the first few pages you will be hooked. Set in 1971, Sijie’s novel follows the story of two middle class city boys, forcibly removed to the Chinese countryside for re-education as part of the Cultural Revolution. Guilty only of having doctors and dentists for parents, they are subjected to punishingly hard physical work and appalling living conditions. Two things make their lives bearable – the presence nearby of the beautiful Little Seamstress, and a collection of books, first borrowed and then audaciously stolen from a friend, which open up a world beyond the mountains. Sijie’s story crackles with wit and humour throughout – the opening scene, in which the narrator finds himself playing a tune hastily retitled Mozart is Thinking of Chairman Mao sets the tone instantly. But this is also a story about the power of words and the power of desire, and as such is beautifully told. Each character is vividly drawn, from the Little Seamstress herself to the grotesque village headman. Comic episodes are interwoven skilfully with passages exploring the

transformative power of literature, and before you know it you have reached the inevitable yet poignant conclusion, which will stay with you for a long time afterwards. Flat Stanley – Jeff Brown Stanley Lambchop is a rather unusual boy. After an accident with a bulletin board, he is four feet tall, about a foot wide – and half an inch thick. Of course, being flat has its advantages – Stanley’s trip to California in an envelope is great, and his brother Arthur would love to be able to slide under their bedroom door like Stanley does. And, if Stanley was round, he would never have been able to assist his neighbour in catching thieves intent on stealing the world’s most famous painting. But there are downsides too – while it is great to be a kite for half an hour, it’s not so much fun when Arthur gets bored and leaves Stanley stuck in a tree. People can be cruel too, and eventually the name calling gets too much. Luckily, Arthur is on hand with a solution to his brother’s problem… This picture book manages to make an impossible situation seem perfectly plausible, thanks to the matter-of-fact style and simple, convincing illustrations. Ideal to read aloud to younger children or as a first book for newly confident readers, it has stood the test of time since its first publication in 1968. If it isn’t already a family favourite, then it is destined to become one very, very quickly.

Keep it cool!

ow summer is in full swing and we seem to be having quite a nice one at last we must make sure we keep our pets, livestock and even wildlife cool and comfortable. This article will give readers some tips for a healthy happy summer. All pets and livestock must have access to cool shady areas and be kept out of direct sunlight. Small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs can be especially susceptible to heat. If possible bring them indoors to a cool room with a tiled floor during the hottest part of the day. If this is not practical make sure their housing is out of direct sunlight and provide sunshades; you can buy UV-resistant hutch covers to reflect the sun’s rays away from the animal. Provide hollow logs, ceramic pots and cardboard boxes with cut-outs so animals can get some shade; plastic is not suitable as it tends to become very hot. Provide extra water bottles as your furry friends will drink much more in hot weather and use a bottle cover to keep water cool and free from algae. Dog owners should consider walking their pet during the cooler times of the day such as early morning and late evening. Remember pavements can become extremely hot during the day and can burn dogs’ paws so try to avoid walking on them in hot weather. Invest in a cooling mat so your dog has a nice cool bed to lie on during the heat of the day; a relatively new idea is a cooling coat which once damp dries in such a way that it draws heat away from the dog’s body. Some owners also prefer to keep heavier-coated breeds clipped shorter in the summer to aid in cooling. It goes without saying to never, ever leave a dog in a car on a hot day – if you need to run errands leave your dog at home where he can keep cool and comfortable – too many dogs are still dying in hot cars. Take a trip to the beach one evening – it’s enormous fun for you and your pet and a great way to cool down, check local authority websites for dog-friendly beaches. Horse owners should make sure their equine friends have shade when out at pasture, either a field shelter or mature trees. Try to graze horses together so they

can stand nose to tail to help get rid of flies. If your fields lack shade consider bringing your horse in during the day and turn out overnight when it’s cooler. Make sure your horse is fit enough for his work as hot weather can really sap their energy and try to exercise during the cooler parts of the day. Provide plenty of fresh water and consider feeding electrolytes if your horse sweats excessively during work. Livestock such as sheep and alpacas need access to shade and need to be sheared to prevent them from suffering from heat stress and fly strike. Pigs are very susceptible to sunburn and will need a nice muddy wallowing area to help keep cool and provide protection for their skin. Poultry need to have plenty of access to nice shady areas and the poultry house needs to be kept as cool as possible. Hens can go off lay during times of extreme heat. And once again make sure that water is plentiful and fresh; provide extra troughs and drinkers if necessary. Wildlife can struggle during very hot weather too. Providing water for garden birds and creatures such as hedgehogs can be a life saver, as can providing food for nesting birds as insect populations are dwindling rapidly. Hedgehogs are very grateful for wet cat food too as this will provide them with energy as well as moisture. Put shallow trays of water out for them too as they will appreciate that very much, but please, NO MILK, it upsets their little tummies! Signs of heatstroke can include anxious behaviour such as pacing and whining, drooling, excessive panting, difficulty breathing, bright red gums, vomiting and diarrhoea, weakness, collapse and seizures. If you suspect your pet has heatstroke place him in a cool shady area with a fan if possible, mist with water and offer a drink if he’s not vomiting, wrap your pet in cool wet towels and contact your vet immediately. There used to be a veritable cluster of them on a warm summer evening. Now it’s just the odd one that passes over head causing all the local dogs to get vocal. If you have never been up in one, I can recommend it’s a great one to put on your bucket list. I’ve had three rides… The first was for my fiftieth birthday. Lovely flight over Loxwood and Ifold and despite an inbuilt fear of heights I must confess I found the whole thing a great thrill. I learnt how the pilots power their burners to drive their balloons quickly to quite a height so that they can record wind direction at various levels thus giving them at least some measure of direction control over the beast that hangs above them. Then, as the flight progresses, continual plotting goes onto their charts as they monitor the layout of pylons and other fixed hazards as well as the presence of farms that may require the balloon to be lifted to avoid frightening animals below. It finally ended with all us passengers crouching down inside the protective sides of the heavy basket as we came to a wonderfully soft landing in a small field where we enjoyed a glass of bubbly to celebrate our maiden journey. A lovely ride. My second ride was a little different. This was offered by a grateful pilot for letting him land on the farm. This ride was not a commercial one at all! For starters the basket was tiny and contained just the pilot, his mate, and me. This, he explained, was a fun flight. I called it a hairy flight. The co-pilot, an airline pilot, was accumulating the hours and skills needed to get his balloon licence. We tree top skimmed for most of the time. Now and then we dipped into empty fields to glide just a couple of feet above the grass, and with burner on full blast we’d rise just enough to clear the hedge or fence that bordered the field. For a good part of the flight we continued to try practice landings onto sites that the pilot picked out ahead of us. The most comical part of all came when we made our approach run over Dunsfold Aerodrome. The pilot once more dropped the canopy down until we must have seemed to any ground-based observer that we were going to land. The response from the airfield was instant. From one of the hangers a vehicle headed towards us at speed. Our pilot waited until they were well on their way, then, chuckling loudly he opened the burner valves full blast and we soared away into the heavens once more. The vehicle stopped in its headlong rush and turned slowly and reluctantly back to its base. Apparently they were on their way to collect a toll for landing at the airport. Good game I

understand. My third ride was the most spectacular. A huge balloon with a huge basket – fifteen on board – soaring regally over the Valley of the Kings at Luxor in Egypt. This was a very early morning ride. Essential before the heat of the desert sun made the lift of the air heated by the burners useless against the rising outside temperature. To see the wonders of that area from above is breathtaking. The Valley of the Kings one side of the river, the amazing Temple of Karnak on the other and the magnificent Nile snaking below, its banks of greenery extending out like a green road on each side with a clear demarcation against the vast sands of the desert. Glorious. There was one problem though. Where do you land? To land in the desert would make recovery difficult to say the least, so the pilot brought the huge thing down to gently bump into a field of some unknown crop. He skilfully kept it inflated just enough so that the waiting handlers could literally pull the beast, with all us on board, to the field’s edge where the pick-up truck stood ready to take us and the collapsed canopy back to our Nile Cruiser. Then came intervention. From way across the field came a noise of shouting and, I believe, cursing. This from a small, shrouded figure who was waiving his arms and a large stick while desperately clinging onto the back of a small, scrawny donkey. With his feet nearly scrapping the ground atop the tiny animal and his bearded, weathered face contorted with the effort of screaming at the men clinging to our basket, he presented a comical yet alarming picture. We all felt sorry for the poor donkey. Mind you though, once he had climbed off the beast and started berating the men on foot, the donkey took the opportunity to tuck into the crop with obvious relish. After a few minutes though, with a few coins abstracted from the men, he returned to the creature, gave it a light clout with his stick to get its head out of his crop, and retired back across the field in a far happier state! I’m pretty sure the animal ate far more of the crop than any damage done by the handlers! I fondly think this scenario must have been repeated daily over that area of the Nile as the poor farmers who scratched a living on their small plots of land extracted as much compensation as they could from the continual rain of tourists who descended from the sky onto their land. Thus ended a wonderful ride and a memorable day at that amazing place. So, if you’ve never been up in one and the opportunity arises. Grab it with both hands. It’s something you will remember for ever, I promise! Feeling Fruity

ave you ever wished you could grow fresh fruit in your garden but worry the space is too small, or it won't look pretty, or it's too difficult? What if I was to tell you that even a beginner can successfully grow a wide variety of fruit from apples and pears, to plums, cherries, blueberries and raspberries, and possibly even figs or nectarines? The first thing you need to know is that the sweeter the fruit is meant to be the more sun it will require. Sun boosts sugar levels. If you have a sunny wall it's an ideal place to train a sun-loving fruit tree like a peach or an apricot. Plant the tree at the base of the wall but not too close (about 30cm is about right) in soil enriched with fertiliser and good quality compost. As it grows splay the branches evenly and attach them to the wall. As the plant grows gradually cut out old straggly branches and tie in new healthy branches. The idea of splaying or ‘fanning’ is to ensure as much sun as possible gets to the fruit, so it can ripen beautifully and maximise your crop. It also has the benefit of being a great space saver. Choose a variety that won’t grow too large. In slightly shadier spots you can grow gooseberries or raspberries, or my favourite:

morello cherries. Most of these come in compact varieties and can also be fantrained against a wall if space is an issue. I have a tiny orchard of minarettes – space-saving apple, pear and plum trees – bought as single vertical stems which I grow in pots. They grow to a maximum of 2m high and no wider than 45cm. My children love them! Simply cut back the side stems to about 10cm at this time of year and you’re good to go. Just remember that pot-grown plants rely totally on you for their food and water. Thick glazed nonporous pots are best because they retain water and act as insulation in extreme cold. Use the correct compost and food for the plant but most will do well with a regular high potash liquid feed from early spring to late summer. As a gardener I was quite late to fruit-growing, but I realised quickly that it becomes an addictive part of the hobby. And an unexpected bonus is that I’ve noticed a definite increase in my bee population over the past few years. Free food, and good for the environment too. What could be better? Rachel Leverton

Garden Toys Make the most of your garden and lure your children away from the TV!

ardens are a great place for children to run around and get that all important fresh air and exercise. The addition of a toy or two will mean you can keep them happily occupied for hours. Swings are perennially popular. Make sure the size and style is appropriate to the age of the child. Better still buy one which has changeable seats so you can upgrade as the child grows, or simply ring the changes now and then. Slides come in all sizes. They can be independent structures or attached to climbing frames. You really do get what you pay for in this instance. Do your homework. Is a metal or wooden frame best for your garden? How much use will it get and how many and what ages of children does it need to support? Get the best you can afford and it will serve you for many years. Trampolines are a relative newbie to the UK garden compared with slides and swings but they are rightfully popular. Even adults can’t resist them. You’ll need a flat surface, and a safety net is highly recommended. Most trampolining injuries occur when one child lands on another so buy the biggest your garden will allow. It’s almost impossible to police the ‘one child at a time’ recommendation so bigger is

safer as each child has more space. Kids love dens. Provide a Wendy house or a tepee and let their imagination run wild. If you have the funds you can buy an elaborate fort or tree house. If you don’t have space for a permanent Wendy house, provide poles and old blankets and let them construct their own! If you have space for a sand and water area your children will love it. There are simple small plastic tables designed for the purpose and huge wooden luxury models complete with seats and sunshade. Use specialist play sand to fill it. Make sure you buy one with a cover to protect it from the weather and prevent neighbourhood cats from using it as a toilet. We can’t all have a proper pool in the garden but most of us have room for a paddling pool. Add a couple of supersoaker water pistols and a waterslide made from heavy-duty silicon and you’re set for an afternoon of splashy delight. If you have a large space you could invest in some football goals or a badminton set. But for those who love to play games and have a smaller space there’s croquet or outdoor skittles. And there are now outdoor giant versions of family games like Connect 4, Jenga and Chess. Time for some outdoor fun. Tracey Anderson

Our Community Volunteers – Bex Thurston

ome things run in the blood, which must surely be the case for Bex Thurston and the theatre. A committee member of the Billingshurst Dramatic Society, the director of its latest play, My Three Angels (review on page 17. Ed), and a professional actor, she is also the daughter and granddaughter of previous BDS members, and has been treading the boards herself at the Women’s Hall in Billingshurst on and off since her teens. It is very much a family affair as her mother, a retired drama teacher, is also involved in this production. Bex admits that her choice of career was undoubtedly shaped by having a family who were involved with the stage and her own experiences as a child of helping out with plays, including crawling under the stage to retrieve items which were stored there. Since returning to Billingshurst with a young family, she has been delighted to become involved with the group again, while acknowledging that times have changed since the golden age of her parents’ epoch, and that the group needs to evolve to stay relevant to its community. The BDS has a relatively small membership who

all get involved in the many different aspects of putting on a production, from acting to set-building, organisation to (vital) tea-making in order to put on its twice-yearly productions in October and May. The repertoire is wide-ranging and sometimes involves other local groups, such as the forthcoming performance of A Trip to Scarborough, when the BDS is joining forces with Horsham theatre company, Lights and Bushels. They have also tackled musical productions, including Sweet Charity and Oh! What a Lovely War. The group is keen to have more people join them, in whatever capacity, as roles are flexible and varied. Bex has spoken with such enthusiasm about the BDS that it is hardly necessary to ask why she volunteers with the group, but I ask anyway. “It’s a connection with my past, a creative outlet… and we get to have a jolly good laugh!” Visit www.billingshurstdramaticsociety.com.
