T
he Big Event for June is of course the Billingshurst Show and Carnival Procession. The theme for this year’s show is Down On The Farm which should be a fun way to remind us of the rural location of our villages. The procession leaves Jengers Mead at noon and arrives at the Station Road Recreation Ground shortly before the Show opens at 1pm. Traditionally the weather has smiled on the Show, let’s hope for more of the same this year. See you there! The area’s longest-established, independent family firm
Fowlers fun at Billibiz – The Show Fowlers are proud to be the area’s longest established independent estate agency, and as part of their commitment to the local area are constantly supporting and sponsoring many local events. Last month was a good example of this. Keith Hutchinson, the director of Fowlers Billingshurst, was keen to represent the company at the BILLIBIZ show held in Billingshurst’s village hall. Keith was available throughout the day to answer any questions about the housing market, or queries with the buying and selling process. At the event Fowlers held a very successful 'VALUE THESE HOUSES' competition which allowed participants to be estate agents for the day and estimate how much several properties were worth with a prize to the winner.

NOW 17: New Original Watercolours Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, 13th May - 15th July
O
ver 20 of this country’s leading watercolour artists are descending on the ancient market town of Horsham to display their most recent work. Watercolours, a democratic medium enjoyed by the millions, but perfected by so few is an art that has great versatility as members of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours show in NOW 17 at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery. Going back to its roots, this stunning exhibition of contemporary watercolours shows just how radical the art form is and just why as a medium it set the art world alight 200 years ago. Then it was cutting edge, challenging and revolutionary as well as artistic – just the qualities that The Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours celebrate in their show NOW 17: New Original Watercolours at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. Artists such as Rosa Sepple RI (the current RI President) reveal just how modern watercolours are; they show that while the watercolours, such as La Serenata can look naïve, they are multi-layered with fascinating narrative, complex colour pallet and humour. Or the paintings by Naomi Tydeman RI, whose sense of colour, perspective, understanding of the medium and feel for the seaside create masterpieces of great beauty which draw the visitor in to the Tenby Skyline. Ian Sidaway RI’s Levans Hall VI which will also be on display among the 80 paintings shows how the modern watercolour artist is stretching the bounds of techniques; while Deborah Walker RI displays different style to reflect the Inlet. Some of the art shows how use of the
pallet can create a real sense of the object, from its three-dimensional shape to the texture: a brilliant example of this is Lillias August RI’s Ancient vessels. Founded in 1831, the year before the Great Reform Act when radicalism was in the air, the rich and varied history of the Royal Institute is matched by the depth and quality of the watercolours on show at Horsham. Queen Victoria awarded the title ‘Royal’ in 1885 and today Her Majesty the Queen is Patron and HRH Prince of Wales is an Honorary Member. Following on from their successful London show the exhibition in Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is a rare excursion out of the capital. NOW17: New Original Watercolours forms the central part of Horsham’s Festival of the Watercolour with talks, workshops and demonstrations designed to engage people at all levels and ages. NOW 17 exhibition and the Festival of the Watercolour are supported by Toovey’s Fine art and Valuers, who have continued their involvement with the development of the Museum watercolour collection – without their support, Horsham Museum and Art Gallery would not be able to host a number of upcoming events. NOW17 opened on Saturday 13th May and runs until 15th July at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. With free entry and the chance to see over 80 paintings by members of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, it is an opportunity that art lovers should not miss. www.horshammuseum.org. St Catherine’s Hospice documents people’s ultimate dreams
M
embers of the local community revealed their biggest, lifelong dreams as part of an inspiring stand hosted by St Catherine’s Hospice at County Mall Shopping Centre, Crawley, on 10th May. St Catherine’s invited shoppers to talk to their local hospice about the D word as part of national Dying Matters Awareness Week, which aims to get people talking about death, dying and bereavement. People filled in specially designed ‘Before I die’ cards with a range of wishes from travelling to destinations like Australia, the Maldives, and Ireland to helping St Catherine’s as much as possible. Shoppers took the time to read what others’ ambitions were before thinking about their own, against a backdrop of pictures of hospice patients and staff. A few common themes of what the Crawley community most want to achieve before they die emerged as the day went on, and the most popular
ambitions included: • Travelling – Including specific reasons such as wishing to see the Northern Lights or Burning Man Festival • Seeing their children or grandchildren fulfilled • Learning a new skill or hobby like the piano, a language or salsa dancing. Shoppers also spoke to hospice staff about the expert care that is provided to terminally ill local people and their family and friends across Sussex and Surrey. Laura Mitchell, Communications and Marketing Executive at St Catherine’s said, “It was great that so many people engaged with our Before I die board and there some really moving and interesting ambitions were revealed. It’s not often people take time to reflect on the things they’d most like to achieve before they die, but it’s important they do and we’re proud to lead our community in thinking like this. We’d like to thank County Mall for giving us the chance to start conversations like this, and we hope everyone who took part or read others wishes went away feeling uplifted and inspired.” The Before I die project was first created by artist Candy Chang on an abandoned house in New Orleans after she was bereaved. Her idea was to give people chance to reflect on their lives and share their personal aspirations publicly. The project has been a global success since it started six years ago, with more than 2,000 Before I die boards created. Run Safely in Summer
N
ow that summer is here it seems the parks, paths and – worryingly – roads are full of lycra-clad runners and joggers. Follow our guide to keep yourself cool and safe… Dress appropriately. Loosefitting clothes help take advantage of any breeze. Investigate techno fabrics which allow sweat to pass through them and evaporate, keeping your core temperature lower. Use sunglasses and waterproof sunscreen. A visor to protect your face is a good idea but not a tight-fitting hat because the head is where we lose the most heat. Choose the right time. Avoid running between midday and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest. If you’re training in a city air quality is best in the morning, and try to choose a route which provides a lot of shade. Keep hydrated. Hydrate well about two hours before a run, even if you don’t feel thirsty. For shorter runs of less than 45 minutes, drink water throughout. For longer runs use drinks which
help maintain electrolyte levels. Start slower, stop sooner. Start your run a bit slower than usual. Know when to stop, because heat-induced illness is serious. Signs to watch for are headaches, confusion, loss of muscle control, hot and cold flushes, clammy skin and an upset stomach. If you experience any of these, seek shade, a drink and transport home. Use waterways. If possible try to choose a route that passes near water because it’s usually cooler and breezier which will help keep your core temperature down. You can make use of rivers, streams, a lake or the sea. If you can finish your run with a brief swim it's a great way to cool down quickly. Be safe. If running where others are about always give them priority and respect their personal space. And never run on the road – you are doing this to be healthy and ending your run on a hospital bed is not healthy – or cool! Tracey Anderson

Gatwick Airport’s soaring support for St Catherine’s Hospice
S
t Catherine’s Hospice is celebrating the most successful charity partnership in its history after Gatwick Airport raised a staggering £74,000 for the hospice in a year. Last year, Gatwick selected St Catherine’s as its local Charity of the Year and the two-year partnership has already exceeded all expectations. A year in, Gatwick has smashed its fundraising target, thanks to inventive fundraising activities including: • Auctioning Amoolia Earhart, a decorated cow that stood in the South Terminal • Selling discounted old laptops to staff • Entering a 15-strong Gatwick Airside Operations Team into Tough Mudder • Giving passengers the opportunity to donate to coin globes in airport terminals • Launching a £20 staff fundraising spring challenge. Melanie Wrightson, Community Engagement
Manager at Gatwick Airport, said,“We're thrilled that we’ve managed to raise such a fantastic amount for St Catherine’s and would like to thank all our staff for their individual and combined fundraising efforts. St Catherine’s is Gatwick’s local hospice, so we know how vital the care and support it provides to people in our local community is. It’s a privilege to raise money to help them do this.” Lucy Bowden, Philanthropy Manager at St Catherine’s, said, “It’s been fantastic to engage with local staff at one of the biggest employers in our area, and we can’t thank Gatwick enough for their enthusiasm and incredible support. We're looking forward to more exciting fundraising activities in the year ahead as our successful partnership goes from strength to strength.” Gatwick’s support helps St Catherine’s be there to provide expert care to local people when life comes full circle. Declutter! / About the house
Decluttering – the KonMari Way
M
arie Kondo is a Japanese ‘organising consultant’ whose method for decluttering is taking the globe by storm. Called KonMari, the method is actually pretty straightforward. If something you own doesn’t ‘spark joy’, get rid of it. Simple right? KonMari isn’t for everyone, and Kondo certainly has a few somewhat bizarre suggestions. (Seriously, who has the time to unpack every item from their handbag, every evening?) But most of her advice is practical, easy to follow and actually makes a lot of sense. She also dips into the psychology of why we hold on to things, and why we should let them go. Kondo recommends collecting every item in a particular category and going through them in one go. So, for instance, you’d lay every item of clothing you own on the bed or floor, pick up each one and if it doesn’t ‘spark joy’ add it the charity pile. With this approach, you get the shock of realising just how much stuff you actually own, and are more likely to discard items than if you just flick through them when they’re in a drawer. She does, of course, make some concessions for items you really need but that don’t particularly spark joy. The main idea is that you should stop hoarding stuff that you might use one day, clothes that you only ever wear when
the washing pile is teetering over, and items you feel guilty about getting rid of. Kondo also has some good advice when it comes to what to do with the things you keep. She advises against buying expensive storage solutions, and recommends using shoe boxes to keep things tidy instead. She also recommends storing things vertically, e.g. folding clothes so that they can be stacked on end, meaning you can see them, rather than having them buried under other items. I’ve found this tip very useful – it means I can find a black T-shirt easily, though I might have to unfold several black T-shirts to find the one that has the motif I want! Kondo lives alone, and it does feel sometimes that her method is mainly aimed at other single adults. She recommends leading by example, the idea being that if you get rid of clutter, your family will follow you. That has not yet happened in my house I have to say. Nevertheless, I have got rid of several bin bags and boxes full of ‘stuff’ since reading her book and have felt surprisingly relieved about doing it. If you fancy trying the KonMari method for yourself, her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, can be ordered from most libraries and book stores. Kate Duggan

Book Reviews / About the house
A Good Read June’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Blackberry Wine – Joanne Harris Now that the summer is upon us what better excuse do we need than to escape to the hot summers of the 1970s and a gentler pace of life in both Yorkshire and the South of France? Published just one year after her hit novel Chocolat, this splittime novel will transport you to the magic of the countryside and the simple pleasure of a bottle of wine. Londoner Jay is a writer who published his greatest work – Jackapple Joe – ten years ago, but has since struggled to replicate this success. Travelling between the present and the summers of Jay’s childhood we learn of the unlikely friendship he struck up with an old man called Jackapple Joe. From him, Jay learns about the magic of nature and the secrets of home-made wine. In the present, Jay returns to Yorkshire hoping to find some sense of meaning and inspiration. Instead he finds only some old bottles of Joe’s special brew. The wine has more of an effect on him than he bargained for and under the ruse of working on his next novel Jay buys a house in the French village of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes (the setting for Chocolat). In reality, he is escaping his city life
and his girlfriend – and his sense of failure. As the wine works it magic Joe finds his inspiration. But is it the wine, or is it the ghost of an old friend? Magic can be found in many unlikely places: the magic of nature, the magic of friendship, and the magic of belief in ourselves. Tom Gates: Dogzombies Rule (for now) – Liz Pichon The eleventh instalment in this hugely popular series will not disappoint fans. Tom is once more trying to cope with life at school, his annoying sister, Delia, and plotting to make his band, Dogzombies, the best band in the world ever. Tom and his friends decide that if their band is going to be successful they need to do more than play at an old people’s home. So they set about trying to make it big by doing what all bands do: writing new songs and producing a music video. This doesn’t prove to be as easy as they had thought as they struggle to find lyrics that rhyme. It also turns out that music videos take a lot of planning and are made harder when an animal runs off with your dad’s phone during filming! An enticing mixture of text and cartoons this book is a nice easy read, despite being over 200 pages long. Aimed at 912-year-olds it certainly isn’t the most challenging book as far as vocabulary is concerned and there are many readers of the series that are younger. However, if you have a reluctant reader – especially a boy – this is an excellent choice.

The Loxwood Joust returns to Loxwood Meadow on the 5th, 6th, 12th and 13th August and discounted advance tickets are now on sale. The Loxwood Joust, the most spectacular mediaeval festival in the Realm, takes place at the enchanted Loxwood Meadow and is the UK’s premiere mediaeval fun day out. Step back in time and experience the verve and vigour of a world where lives were harsh and hearts were passionate at this unique, fun and educational day out for all the family! Each day from 10am to 6pm The Loxwood Joust’s unrivalled programme of mediaeval revelry guarantees a day out like no other. A fast-paced, all action jousting tournament will amaze and astound while daring displays of weaponry, archery and cannon fire will enthrall as fully armoured knights prepare to meet in a thunderous battle. The main concert stage is where performances from the internationally acclaimed singing group the Mediaeval Baebes will enchant and soothe. Wander the massive Living History Village in the ‘Mediaeval Meadow’ – a totally authentic recreation of a mediaeval battle camp and browse the Mediaeval Market Place where traders and hawkers vie for your attention as companies of actors, wandering minstrels, the Court Jester and dance troupes entertain and delight throughout the day.
Try your hand at archery, sup fine ales and dine on local organic fayre, whilst the little ones enjoy their very own Children’s Kingdom – a festival within a festival where the Mediaeval Groat is the currency! And seek out ‘The Mediaeval Gaming Zone’ where children and adults can try a few historic card games, play a round of chess or try your hand at Tafl – a strategy game from the Viking era. Local artists focus on faces in a new multi-media exhibition Cranleigh Arts Centre, 13th June - 1st July
A
collaborative, multi-media art exhibition, entitled Face To Face, is now showing at Cranleigh Arts Centre. The exhibition – which is FREE to enter – focuses on the power of faces, what they mean to us and how alternative artistic approaches influence our response to them. Face To Face features the work of three Cranleigh-based artists. It includes papier mâché heads on the theme of family history by Louise Grundy, a challenging portrait project including many local faces by photographer Sian Tyrrell and beautiful photographs of animal faces in Kenya by Jeremy Lucas, presented posthumously. THE ARTISTS: Jeremy Lucas. Jeremy’s work focuses on something he felt deeply passionate about – the wildlife of Kenya. His chosen images feature the faces of lions, elephants and zebras and his colour portraits capture their glorious beauty and dignity. The Jeremy Lucas Education Fund was recently established in Jeremy’s memory. The aim of the fund is to give Kenyan children the chance of further education – creating a better tomorrow by educating the youth of today. Three children are currently benefitting from the fund but with more donations from the public, the lives of many more children and communities can be improved. For more information visit www.justjhoom.co.uk Louise Grundy. Louise’s exhibits represent a move away from textile design to papier mâché,
24
a discipline that has reignited her love of art. Her faces are those of members of her family tree whose faces she has pieced together through the occasional photograph and family research. As Louise says, “There are so many interesting stories to discover in family history! I wanted to illustrate them by making a paper sculpture of each character. As I create the sculptures, I feel I understand the individuals more and their personalities begin to emerge.” Sian Tyrrell. Photography has long been Sian’s passion, but this project was about the personal challenge of finding an artistic voice in portraiture. Her mission, between 2014 and 2016 was to take natural photos of 50 interesting people and try and capture their authentic self: “For me, a good portrait is about more than just looking good. It’s about celebrating the individual, capturing them just as they are, right at that moment so that family and friends can look back and remember.” Face To FACE headlines in the gallery at Cranleigh Arts Centre, 1 High Street, Cranleigh, GU6 8AS, and is open from 13th June to 1st July, Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10am-4.30pm. Entry is free. www.cranleighartscentre.org. (01483) 278000. Clare Denton, Cranleigh Arts Centre Papier mâché bust by Louise Grundy

Billingshurst Firefighter Kieran Hangs Up His Boots!
W
e say goodbye to Firefighter Kieran Hatchard who, after ten years being a Retained Firefighter at Billingshurst, has decided to change careers. An exciting year ahead for Kieran as he has moved to the south coast and is also getting married this month. We can’t thank him enough for his dedicated work over the past decade and what he has given to help protect his local community. An achievement he should be very proud of. Good luck, Kieran, you will be missed by everyone on station. This means that the drive for recruitment continues and we are certainly looking to fill some boots! Do you live or work within four minutes of the fire station? Are you able to leave work to respond to emergency calls? Or can you respond during evenings and weekends? Please get in touch by popping down to the
station any Monday night from 6.30 or please call (01243) 642134. We have one new recruit in the process at the moment so I look forward to introducing you to him in the next couple of months once he’s completed his final stages.  As usual, we will be attending the Billingshurst Show and Carnival Procession on 25th June. As well as having one of our fire engines there – always popular with the youngsters – this is another chance to come and have a chat with us if perhaps you are considering joing us. This year is flying by so we are now in full flow for organising our Open Day which will take place in September. Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station Photo: Dan Game (left) with Kieran Hatchard who will shortly be leaving the Fire Service at Billingshurst. The search is on for his successor!

Broadford Bridge exploratory drilling site at Adversane, near Billingshurst No small ‘nodding donkey’ this, but a huge 108ft tall drill
O
n a wet and windy Sunday Bank Holiday evening, on 30th April , some 150 people heard calls to object to oil drilling at a farm near Billingshurst. A packed public meeting at Pulborough was standing room only as residents were urged to contact their local MPs and councillors. While UK Oil and Gas (Investments) plc has planning permission for exploratory drilling at Wood Barn Farm, Broadford Bridge, Adversane we argue that permission is no longer fit for purpose. It was Celtique Energie which applied to West Sussex County Council in February 2013 for permission for the Exploratory drill. When permission was given it contained 23 Conditions of which No 3 states: “…the development be carried out in accordance with the Environmental Statement, ES. The ES proposes only conventional drilling: it is seeking free-flowing hydrocarbons in the Sherwood Sandstone formation. To reach the target formation, the drilling will pass through the Kimmeridge clay (a shale), which is thought likely to contain ‘tight’ hydrocarbons. The graphic on page 9 of chapter 4 in the ES shows that drilling will also pass through various limestone formations: it is these in which ‘acid fracturing’ may be practicable (it does not work in shale). However, there are no [author’s italics] proposals to fracture any of those rocks, either with acid or hydraulically. Failure to develop in accordance with Condition 3 should attract immediate enforcement action, if necessary involving a Stop Notice. Furthermore, the operations described in chapters 4 and 6 of the Environmental Statement can only accommodate conventional drilling.” The new plans are considerably different from the original ones. These have only emerged via information the company has supplied to its Investors and, via an application by the company to the Environment Agency to vary its environmental permit.
No information session has been provided by either the company or WSCC and local people are feeling that they have been left in the dark. The company aims to drill a well in the second quarter of this year (April-June). KKWG (Keep Kirdford and Wisborough ‘Green’) argues that such major changes are involved that the County should require the company to submit a new planning application including public consultation. In particular, evidence provided by the CPRE points to a fault near the site which could result in the ground shifting if the drill intercepts it (as happened at Preese Hill, Lancashire, when the ground shook in Blackpool). Such a fault could also provide the means for liquids/ chemicals to access public drinking supplies via the River Arun. Some chemicals to be used are carcinogenic (cancercausing) and two are very toxic to aquatic invertebrates – which form part of the internationally important wildlife site on the river, a Special Protection Area. Planning permission for the drill expires 15th September 2017. UKOG/KOGL did not attend the meeting but supplied literature to the event. A film, The Bentley Effect, was shown in the same hall on 12th May. Present were the Director, Brendan Shoesmith, and two Australian residents from the area who were able to come to the UK after their community crowdfunded the project and raised the necessary funds. A small rural community got to grips with the issues raised by Coal Bed Methane, produced witnesses who knew more than the company and, finally, the regional government withdrew the License. Essay writing / About the house
Writing an A* Essay
W
hether you’re 15 or 50, writing an academic essay can be pretty daunting. Hopefully our how-to guide might make the process a little bit easier. Start off with your notes. Get key points down, quotes, useful resources and so on. Don’t worry about grammar and spelling; at this point, it’s all about getting your ideas together in one place. Ideally, you’ll want to start your research well before your deadline, so that you can add to your notes when you hear something relevant in a lecture, or come across something when you’re reading. Make sure you include where you’ve found the information, so that you can cite the source in your essay. Try to identify any gaps in your notes. Do you need to find proof to back up an argument, for example? It can help to write yourself a set of questions that you need to answer. You’ll then know exactly what you’re looking for when you’re researching. Do use trusted sources as references. If you find something useful in a newspaper, check the background source, as some publications do have a habit of twisting facts. The same goes for websites such as Wikipedia. Once you have your notes, copy and paste them into a new document, and then start moving them into some kind of structure. Most essays will follow the following structure: Introduction. (Less than 10% of your total word

count). This should give a brief overview of what you’re going to cover in the essay, and why. It should indicate that the essay is going to answer the set question, or expand on the title that you’ve chosen. Body of the essay. Here you’ll want to fully explain the points you mentioned in the introduction. You’ll likely include quotes and refer to key research material. While you might include opposing views, the main body of the essay should support the conclusion. You might need to subdivide this section with subheaders. Conclusion. (Up to 15% of the total word count). Here you’ll summarise your main ideas and, if appropriate, answer the question set. While the saying ‘begin at the beginning’ might be true for many things, it’s not always helpful for essays (or magazine articles for that matter). It’s often actually easier to leave writing the introduction until the end. That way you’ll know exactly what it is that you’re introducing. You’ll want to make sure the essay flows well, with well-structured paragraphs, and no spelling or grammatical errors. Don’t rely on a computer spellchecker. It is difficult to proof-read your own work, so ask a friend or family member to take a look at it for you if possible. Good luck! Kate Duggan

4K TV / About the house
4K TV
Confused? Read on…
A
few weeks ago I had to buy new television. And that’s when I first came across the term ‘4K TV’. My last set was a high definition (HD) television, but since then things have moved up a notch. So what exactly is 4K TV and is it worth upgrading? 4K, or Ultra HD, gives you about four times the resolution of a normal HD TV. This means the picture will be sharper and show much more detail, especially when viewed on larger screen sizes of more than 40 inches. The latest sets will include HDR (High Dynamic Range) making the colour depth far richer and more lifelike than anything before. When these two features are added together
Family Run Local Retailer / Service Provider
the result is a truly wonderful viewing experience. The catch is that to get the full benefit your DVD player, media player, or anything else you plug into your TV must also use 4K. And of course you’ll need to upgrade your movies to the new spec too. So this cost should be factored into any decision you make. Is it worth it? Well, when I saw a 4K movie playing on a large 4K screen it did look amazing. In fact so amazing that I invested in a 58 inch 4K TV and a disc player. ‘Invest’ is the right word to use as 4K will gradually become the new norm, just as HD and Blu-ray did a few years ago. Cranleigh Men get a new Shed
A
new Men’s Shed opened on Thursday 20th April at Cranleigh Arts Centre. Following from a very successful information day held in March a group of a dozen men came together to form the new Cranleigh Men’s Shed. Affiliated to the UK Men’s Shed Association, the Cranleigh Men’s Shed is a sort of ‘club’ for men, mainly retired from a variety of different backgrounds, to get together to pursue practical hobbies and interests, either working on personal projects or on those which will benefit the community; usually related to woodworking, using recycled wood, and tools, projects often include making or renewing household and garden items and children’s toys. No previous experience is necessary as all knowledge and skills are freely shared with each other. Established Men’s Shed users say that being
part of a Men’s Shed gives them a sense of achievement and purpose, keeping them active both in mind and body. One of the most valued aspects of a Men’s Shed is the opportunity to socialise and make new friendships. The Men’s Shed at Cranleigh is currently asking for donations of tools and good quality wood which they can use in their projects. The Men’s Shed at Cranleigh will be open every Thursday in the pottery at Cranleigh Arts Centre, 1 High Street, Cranleigh between 10am and 1pm. It’s free to attend. To find out more contact Alasdair Mackie on cranleighmensshed@gmail.com or follow the Cranleigh Men’s Shed on its Facebook page or Twitter account. Loss of a Familiar Face Stan Albert Warren 15th October 1928-17th April 2017 The Royal British Legion lost one of its founder members and loyal subjects this Easter. Stan Albert Warren departed this life 17th April. Stan was the Poppy Appeal Organiser and Membership Secretary, taking over from the infamous Major Jack Leaman when his health deteriorated followed by his unfortunate death. Known by all in the Legion, Stan had many friends but few relatives. He was a generous man who devoted his life to the Royal British Legion. The Legion remains strong and will continue to support our ex-servicemen and women and their families. Death and loss of key people is always hard to bear but Stan’s legacy will live on and our small Billingshurst Branch will continue its vital work in raising funds for all aspects of the Royal British Legion. David Bowie tribute act raises £720 for Macmillan On Saturday 29th April, Stephen Foster once again took his David Bowie tribute show to the Billingshurst Centre to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The show was followed by a 70s Glam Rock revue where the group performed songs from artists such as Queen, T Rex, Sweet, Slade, Glitter Band, Alice Cooper, Sparks and Status Quo. The show sold well and raised the grand total of £720 for Macmillan. We hope to be back near Christmas with a series of special Christmas concerts across Sussex which may just feature some original 70s Glam rock acts… watch this space! Stephen Foster

Fathers’ Day / About the house
The World’s Best Dad Why do we have Fathers’ Day?
A
t a social gathering recently someone mentioned Fathers’ Day and immediately there was a chorus of, “Made up day!” and “Invented by greeting card companies!” That seemed to be the general consensus, but I got to wondering whether Fathers’ Day really was just the product of a boardroom meeting at Hallmark, so I set out to investigate… There is evidence that a Babylonian boy named Elmesu, carved some sort of greeting on a clay tablet 4,000 years ago wishing his father health and long life, but I don’t think we can say Fathers’ Day started there – mostly because that’s pretty much it for the evidence until about 100 years ago. The most common theory about modern Fathers’ Day is that it originated in America, and with one particular lady, a Mrs Sonora Louise Smart Dodd. She felt that just as we dedicate a special day to mothers, so we should do the same for fathers. It meant a lot to her, because she and her siblings were raised in a loving manner by her own father after her mother died in childbirth. So Dodd began a campaign, and the first Fathers’ Day was held on 19th June (her father’s birthday) in 1910. It grew in popularity and in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation declaring that the third Sunday in
June would be Fathers’ Day. Now the waters become murky. How did Fathers’ Day make the leap across the Atlantic? No-one seems to know, but it’s likely that – in the manner of other American traditions – it gradually seeped into the British consciousness. Greetings cards manufacturers definitely played their part though. Never ones to miss a trick, they began producing cards and we bought them. It seems that in the UK, Fathers’ Day really took off in the 1970s but, unlike in the US, it’s never been declared an ‘official’ day. Still, as traditions go it’s a nice one. The role of dads has changed a lot in a generation. Most now take on a substantial amount of child care and are much more handson than their own dads were. Research shows that dads who are involved in day-to-day childcare are key figures in helping their children develop good self-esteem and selfconfidence. Their rough-play helps children learn a sense of control and independence. Crucially, dads who get involved when their children are young, are much more likely to stay involved and in touch if their marriage breaks down. Dads are important, so let yours know how much you love him this Fathers’ Day. Sarah Davey

On butterflies and bats…
T
wo people who have recently spoken at village events are publishing books about Sussex wildlife species… Butterflies of Sussex: A 21st century Atlas by Michael Blencowe and Neil Hulme has just been published by Nature Bureau. Sussex is one of the richest areas of the country in which to watch and appreciate our butterflies. This well illustrated work summarises their current distribution and status covering some 53 species. And, due to be published by Pelagic Books this October, The Barbastelle Bat Conservation handbook by Ian DavidsonWatts and Matt Zeals is a long-awaited guide to barbastelle bat ecology, behaviour, conservation management and threats. It is the first publication of its kind to draw together all of the scientific research on the barbastelle bat into one comprehensive volume. The most up-to-date methods for surveying the species are explained, accompanied by case
studies and practical tips on how to conserve and manage the barbastelle bat’s roosting and foraging habitats. Update on the Parish Wildlife Group. Residents in Plaistow reported some excellent wildlife sightings including Greater Crested Newts and, at the end of April, we had a short session led by Mike King on how to upload such records into i-Record so that our knowledge is not only on the local Parishes’ map but up to date. Plans for the rest of the summer include a dragonfly survey along the River Kird, a water condition assessment course to be led by Jeremy Burgess of the South Downs National Park, a bats and moths talk and walk plus a talk on the Tree Charter by Jon Stokes of the Tree Council. Watch out for posters in Kirdford and Wisborough Green as well as notices in the local papers. Contact: Jill Sutcliffe, (01403) 700395 or Mike King, 07949 909351 Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair, KKWG

Billingshurst Primary School pupils get the best start to SATS week
acing a week of SATS exams, pupils at Billingshurst Primary School are being given the best possible start thanks to their local Sainsbury’s store. For the third year running, the school and Sainsbury’s will be providing all pupils in Year 6 with a boost by providing breakfast before the SATS exams. The initiative has been a huge success over the past three years, emphasising the impact of eating breakfast can have on children’s ability to concentrate during such an important time. At the start of each day, pupils will have the opportunity to relax together over breakfast, culminating in a special treat at the end of a successful week of ice cream from the Fat Cow on Friday afternoon. Pupils have also been treated to an exclusive ‘SATS pack’ from the Billingshurst branch of Coco’s Hairdressers, containing some essential stationary items to help with their exam preparation. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher at Billingshurst Primary School commented, “Ahead of any exam, there is a natural tendency to skip meals or reach for sugary foods. As such, it is so important to teach our children how to eat well, look after themselves and promote good
habits at this stage in their school lives. Each year, the pupils tell me how much they enjoy the SATS breakfasts, not only for the food but the opportunity to support and encourage each other at the beginning of every day. We are very proud of how hard our pupils have worked in the build-up to this week and the boost provided by Sainsbury’s, The Fat Cow and Coco’s is a wonderful demonstration of the support of the wider community in wishing them success.” Ian Goacher, Sainsbury’s Store Manager said, “A healthy breakfast plays an important part in helping pupils to achieve their full potential. We wanted to provide a menu that was tasty and brainboosting, so each pupil has the energy they need to face the challenge. We are delighted to be involved in what we are sure will prove to be a very successful week and wish the children every success both now and in the future.” Kate Clifford, Billingshurst Primary School Community Association Year 6 pupils & Claire Wilson, Head of Year 6, with Ian Goacher, Store Manager and Danielle Tatham, Deputy Store Manager at Sainsbury’s Billingshurst. Prepare your child for SATs & GCSEs Penny Spokes and her team of dedicated tutors have been helping pupils for over ten years at the Tiptop Tutors Centre in Thakeham. There are teachers who are experts in English and maths, to help the very youngest pupil with handwriting and spelling right through to revision classes for GCSEs in English, maths, science and geography. All the teachers are fully qualified with lots of experience in encouraging and motivating all pupils. They are all DBS checked and have recent experience in schools. One of our main aims is to give children the confidence they need to succeed. The summer term is a really good time to help your child with a boost, in preparation for the next academic year, when things are always just that bit harder. We also run lessons in the summer holidays which are very popular, so early booking is essential. Ring Penny Spokes at Tiptop Tutors 01903 744517 for information and to book a place

Setting up an aquarium
A
process will only happen after cycling… Cycling the tank is very important; it produces bacteria in the filter that will support your fish economy by neutralizing their waste and making the aquarium habitable. Interestingly higher concentrations of nitrates are not healthy for your fish either. Too high a level will lead to loss of colour/appetite and also algae blooms. Water changes are an important part of aquarium care and will prevent high build-up of nitrate. Use an aquarium ‘kick start’ product available from your local fish shop; this will add ‘waste’ to the water to start the process off rather than using live fish. Be patient as the cycling process can take around six weeks – use this time to complete any aquascaping plans you may have especially if settling live plants into the aquarium. If you know someone who already has a stable, well established disease-free aquarium ask them for some mature filter media and place it in your filter this will again help the process tremendously. Test your water frequently and when the aquarium is safe you can add your first fish! Do your research as it’s very easy to get caught out with so many wonderful species on offer. The staff at the local fish shop should be able to guide you in the right direction regarding the suitability of the fish you are interested in. Species such as Danios, Cherry barbs, Mollies, Swordtails and Platties are all suitable first time fish and are quite hardy and resilient. Keep stocking levels light to start with and add fish a few at a time while keeping a close eye on water quality. As your tank becomes more established you can add a few more fish. When choosing fish be observant don’t buy any fish from tanks where there are dead of dying fish. If you see tiny white spots on any fish avoid buying from those tanks too as you will introduce a parasite called whitespot to your aquarium. Look for healthy, active fish that are showing interest in their surroundings and their food. Having an aquarium is a really interesting hobby – and often better to watch than the telly! n aquarium can make a stunning feature within your home and setting one up needn’t be as complicated as you think. For those of you who may have kept fish many years ago and still shudder about the under-gravel filters – worry no more, they are very rarely used these days having been replaced with modern canister filters that are much easier to maintain. Whether you decide to go for tropical or cold water fish is personal choice but there is a greater choice of species in the tropical sector and modern heaters really don’t cost much to run. Make sure you have a suitable site in your home, ideally away from any busy doorways and out of direct sunlight. Make sure your chosen aquarium is placed on a specialist stand built to take the weight of the tank plus all its water or you may have a disaster. Start with as large a tank as you can accommodate as it’s actually easier to maintain good water quality in a bigger tank. Things that you will need. A good local fish shop will very likely put together an excellent starter kit for you. The basics you will need are an air pump to give extra oxygen, a heater if you are opting for tropical fish, a filter and filter media, a lighting system (these often come built in to the tank nowadays), water conditioner to make tap water safe for your fish, a gravel vacuum for for cleaning the bottom of the tank, a net and most important of all a water testing kit. Plants are a lovely addition to a tank and if you are worried about live ones there are many beautiful and realistic artificial ones available. Before you think of adding any fish it is important to cycle your tank and get your water safe for fish. It’s better to carry out fishless cycling as this is a harsh process and not really fair on the fish to do a tank cycle with them in. Fish waste releases ammonia into the water column and ammonia kills fish. Bacteria within the filter media will convert this ammonia to nitrite which is even more toxic than ammonia. Fortunately another type of bacteria in the filter will consume the nitrites and convert them into nitrates. Nitrates – as opposed to nitrites – are not toxic to your fish at low levels. To put it simply ammonia (toxic) is converted to nitrite (toxic) whish is then converted to nitrate (non-toxic). This

The humble viola
L
iving in a house full of string players I have to think how to pronounce viola. My musicians say vee-oh-la but gardeners generally say vy-oh-la! Either way it’s a wonderfully obliging little flower and so easy to grow. Violas are a smaller-flowered version of a pansy but are more reliably perennial. They come in an amazingly wide range of colours and flower patterns. They are also incredibly easy to propagate. To make more viola plants simply cut off 7-8cm / 3 inches of the shoot tips at any time of year. Remove the lower leaves and root them into sandy compost. When they take, repot the little plantlets into 7.5cm / 3 inch pots of multipurpose compost until they become established. They can then be planted out in the garden. The whole process only takes a matter of a few weeks! Violas are happy in sun or dappled shade and prefer soil that doesn’t become too dry, so in fact they are the perfect plant for most British gardens and will provide masses of colour at

ankle-height. I have many favourites. There is a pretty purple and yellow one in my garden called Heartsease which migrated from a neighbour’s garden and has self-seeded everywhere. I added Grey Owl, which is pale blue and soft yellow, and I propagated another from my mother-inlaw’s garden, called Irish Molly, which is various shades of subtle green, though I’ve seen other colours also being sold under that name! This year I have an exquisitely pretty fragrant variety called Sorbet ‘Yellow Frost’. I can’t recommend it highly enough. The thing is, they are so easy to grow that you can go to any garden centre and pick your favourite colour combination. Whether you say vee-oh-la or vy-oh-la, this lovely little flower will add music to your garden display. Happy Gardening. Rachel Leverton

An introduction to milking (as it was) John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
I
t’s a fact of life nowadays that the general public have moved further away from the source of the food they eat than they ever have before. The countryside and its inhabitants are a mysterious mixture of people and animals that they see on their televisions, but rarely, if ever, come into personal contact themselves They know beef comes from cattle, lamb from those woolly things and pork from piggies. Some, I have been told, even realise that milk comes from cows, but again may have only vague ideas as to how that liquid is removed from the beasts in the first place. So, for these folk I will endeavour to describe the process. Not using modern machinery though, just the old fashioned way – by hand and bucket. Yes it’s with tongue in cheek, but all the same it’s factually correct. First – as a variation on the old saying goes – catch your cow. Once she’s fastened relatively securely in her stall collect your equipment. Seek out a three-legged stool. Three legs so that no matter how uneven the ground, it will stand still without rocking. Take one stainless steel bucket, also a bucket of warm water and one clean cloth. I would suggest at this point you make sure you have either protective overalls on, or at least clothing that you are prepared to sacrifice in the name of a new experience. A word here about the beast you are to face. Cows come in all sizes and, like us, can vary in their temperaments. Small does not necessarily correlate to their behaviour, in fact often the smaller they are the more spirited a beast may be. In most cases the front end, being tethered, is fairly safe to approach even though you may be subjected to a look that plainly asks, “Who the hell do you think you are, and what the devil do you think you are going to do?” Just ignore it. It’s the other end that you’ve got to worry about anyway. Now, take your cloth, dip it into the warm water and lightly squeeze the excess out. Approach the rear of the cow and lightly lifting her tail to one side, gently wash the large baggy thing that is hanging down between her rear legs, paying special attention to the four dangly bits hanging from its lower extremities. (Should you find these four bits are missing from the appendage then you may well have a problem, but that’s for another day). You will find at this point you have to negotiate two possible sideeffects. The first is that you are in direct line for any
46
sudden release of her bowel movements. Sidestepping this can place you in the ideal spot for her to kick you in the nether regions should she so wish to do. This all helps in the task of persuading her to ‘let her milk down’. You now take your stool and seat yourself beside her udder. The ‘normal’ side for this is to be seated so the cows head end is on your right. Why this side? No idea nut it’s the side I was trained to use! Now comes the skilled bit. Sit and gently place your left knee just inside her leg. This will, with any luck, stop her kicking you halfway down the shed when you touch her danglers for the first time. Ignore the painful swish of the mucky tail that whips round your face and just tuck the end of it quickly in the crook of your bent knee. With your ankles, clasp the base of the bucket so that it cannot be ejected too. You are now in the proper hand-milking position. Your knees are bent tightly under you, your ankles bent and your calf muscles under a strain that they have never suffered since you took your first steps as a baby. Start to gently milk the two teats nearest the front of the animal. The reason you start on these is so that as the milk is removed the udder will start to lift and make access to the rear two easier. The rear end of the udder holds more milk than the front end so is inclined to be more difficult to get at. Don’t bell ring, gently squeeze from forefinger to little pinkie in rotation. You’ll probably find that after just a few minutes cramp will set in and your hand refuse to function, it will pass, whereas the cramp that will bring such exquisite pain to your calf muscles will wait patiently till the small hours of the morning before it has you leaping out of bed as your gastrocnemius knot into tight bundles of agony. I personally found that hopping round the bedroom, moaning and groaning, while muttering “bugger, bugger, bugger” between clenched teeth, went someway to alleviate the problem. So there you have it. Nothing to it. You’ll get kicked, trodden on, horned, swiped across the face with the muckiest tails you can imagine and suffer appalling cramps, so why do it? On a cold frosty winter morning, when the wind cuts like a knife and snowflakes flutter in through the sack-covered broken window. When the cats huddle by the dairy door for their morning dish of warm milk. That’s when you snuggle into the warm flanks of the beast, listen to the contented munching as she enjoys her morning fodder, and with the milk foaming into the pail you ask yourself, “Would I swap this for just another couple of hours in bed?” Well… I darn well would! John Nash

Farewell and Thank You – Tobias Mothe Billingshurst Parish Council has said goodbye to Tobias Mothe who has been employed as a Litter Warden/Odd Job person for a number of years. The Parish Clerk presented Tobias with a leaving card signed by all staff and Councillors and vouchers purchased following a well supported collection. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Tobias for all of his hard work over the years and wish him well in his future plans. He really will be sorely missed by all of us who have worked with him. At the time of writing, the recruitment for Tobias’ successor is underway.

Our Community Volunteers – Sandy Henney
T
here are probably as many different volunteering roles as there are volunteers, with something perfect for everyone. This certainly seems to have been the case for Sandy Henney, volunteer for and director of Wey and Arun Enterprises Ltd, the trading arm of Wey and Arun Canal Trust, whose varied and demanding career has led her neatly into her current volunteering role with the Trust. The Trust, which was set up in 1970, protects and promotes the 23-milelong waterway which was originally constructed during the Napoleonic Wars to create a safe inland route for cargo travelling from London to Portsmouth, thus avoiding the more vulnerable coastal journey. Currently only four miles of the canal is navigable, but much work has been done to clear and maintain large stretches and there are three boats which provide visitors with themed cruises. The stretch of water is also used by canoeists and the tow path is enjoyed by walkers, cyclists and riders alike. For Sandy the project is an ideal mixture of heritage, environment, outdoor activity, and family fun, with a variety of tasks from opening lock gates and recruitment and training to meeting people and dressing up as a rabbit on an Easter cruise! Her
career in communications saw her working for the Government Information Service, the MoD, the Department for Education and as Press Secretary to the Prince of Wales, and culminated with the role of Director of Corporate Affairs for Thames Water. After she and her husband retired, they moved to Spain for ten years during which time they volunteered at a local children’s home and as caseworkers for the Royal British Legion. On returning to England in 2015, they set about looking for another volunteering opportunity and soon found the Canal Trust where they both started out as boat crew. Sandy relishes the combination of mental stimulation and physical exertion that the role involves, and the variety of tasks she undertakes. She also enjoys seeing how the experiences offered by the canal have an impact on the different people who enjoy it, both as visitors and volunteers, citing a recent trip undertaken by a group of severely disabled children who had a wonderful time doing something completely new.
