elcome to the March issue of Village Tweet. Despite the freezing temperatures and snow as I write this, March is the time of Nature’s renewal and a new season: spring, my favourite season. This month we introduce Michaela Giles. Together with her husband Neil and son Oliver, Michaela runs a smallholding on the outskirts of Billingshurst. Michaela will be writing a regular diary which I feel will be of interest to local residents whether or not they run a smallholding themselves. Read her first piece of page 42. Soda Bread
Quick to make and tastes great with butter, jam and a cup of tea
METHOD
1. Heat the oven to 230°C/Gas 8. Grease a baking sheet with a little oil. 2. Sift the flour, salt and soda into the mixing bowl and add the sugar. 3. Stir in the buttermilk or yoghurt, at first with a wooden spoon, then bringing it all together in a doughy mass with your hands. It should feel soft and firm, not sticky. Add a little more flour if the mixture is too wet. 4. Knead the dough lightly in the bowl for about half a minute, until smooth, and then shape it into a ball, as deep as you can make it. Place it on the greased baking sheet. Slash a deep cross in the top of the loaf with a sharp knife. This will allow the bread to open out as the soda starts to work and expand the dough. 5. Bake in the oven for about 12 minutes, and then turn the oven down to 200°C/Gas 6 and cook for another 15-20 minutes, until the base of the bread sounds hollow when you tap it. 6. Allow the bread to cool for 15 minutes, then cut it into thick slices and serve.
INGREDIENTS Olive oil or lard, for greasing 250g/9oz plain flour 1 level tsp salt 1 level tsp bicarbonate of soda 2 tsp soft brown sugar 225ml/8 fl oz buttermilk or live yoghurt

eet Gilly Strong, owner of ‘With Love’, a beautiful shop on Billingshurst High Street. Gilly specialises in painted furniture, Annie Sloan paints, gifts and homewares. The shop also has a small Tea Room serving cafetière coffee, loose leaf tea, homemade cakes, ice cream sundaes and soft drinks. The furniture on display looks fantastic and Gilly has lovingly painted each piece using Annie Sloan paints. It’s a very interesting finish. The chalk paint is made specifically for painting furniture, floors, ‘blackboards’ and for giving walls a completely matt velvety finish. Gilly can supply everything you need to achieve an outstanding finish. If you would like to learn how to do this yourself then pop in and have a word as Gilly
runs regular paining/finishing courses. Details can be found on the shop’s Facebook page. Just search for ‘With Love’. Her stock changes regularly so it’s worth a visit to see what’s new. Gilly spent the first three years of her working life as an English Teacher before taking some time off to write a book. The book didn’t materialise and she changed career, spending the next 31 years as cabin crew. She worked for a number of airlines including GB Airways, Easy Jet and Aer Lingus. So why not stop by next time you are in the village. With Love is on Billingshurst High Street near Barclays Bank. You can find it on online at www.withlove.gb.net or (01403) 780584. What’s Your BMI? And does it matter?
M
any years ago my mum joined a well known slimming club, and after several months was within three pounds of achieving the target weight the club had set for her, but try as she might, she just could not shift those last few pounds. After several disheartening weeks she finally gave up trying and eventually regained all the weight she had worked so hard to lose. This wouldn’t happen nowadays. Modern slimming clubs rarely dictate end weights and are more likely to invite you to set your own targets, although they will encourage you to choose a weight that is within a healthy range. But who decides what a healthy weight is, and does one size fit all? Since the 1970’s, health professionals have calculated a person’s BMI – or body mass index – as a guide to determining their ‘fatness’. Body mass index is calculated by dividing a person’s body weight by the square of their height, and universally the calculation is made by dividing kilograms by metres squared. So, if a person weighs 80 kilograms and is 1.8 metres tall, first square their height (1.8 x 1.8 = 3.24) and then divide this into their weight. Thus 80 divided by 3.24 gives a BMI of 24.7. Once armed with this information, what do you do with it? Health professionals suggest that a person’s BMI should fall between 20 and 25 to be classed as healthy. If it is below 20 you would be considered underweight and anything above 25 would be classed as overweight, with obesity setting in at a BMI of 30 and morbid obesity at 35 or more. Although a person’s BMI is a useful way

of determining if they are at a healthy weight or not, it should be used with caution. Several factors can distort the results and render the BMI meaningless. For example, it is not appropriate for the very young, nor the very old and the excessively tall. Similarly, athletes and others with high muscle mass may appear abnormally overweight. At 5 feet 5 inches (1.65m) tall and based on a BMI of 20-25, a healthy weight for my mum is between 8st 3lbs (53kg) and 10st 5lbs (68kg). The elusive target weight she couldn’t quite manage was 9st 13lbs (65kg) – well within her healthy BMI range. What a shame this information wasn’t around all those years ago! Horsham & Crawley Samaritans – a brief history
I
n 1953, a young curate conducted the funeral of a 14-year-old girl at St Stephen Walbrook, London. He was shocked to discover that she had taken her own life because she feared she had a serious illness and had been too embarrassed by the symptoms to talk to anyone. In fact, she had simply started menstruating. The young curate was Chad Varah and he vowed to help people overcome the sort of isolation that can lead them to take their life. His solution was to set up a telephone support service, not only for the suicidal but for anyone suffering emotional distress and despair. The first call to the service was made on 2nd November 1953. A news story described the service as ‘Telephone Good Samaritans’. The name stuck and has become synonymous with the idea of supporting people struggling to cope. By 1963 there were 41 branches across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Today there are 201 branches with 18,750 volunteers. In 1972 a meeting was held to discuss opening a local branch in Horsham. Horsham & Crawley Samaritans duly opened in May 1973 at Park Street with 120 volunteers serving a population of 150,000. In 1977 Horsham Samaritans moved to their own property at 21 Denne Road where they remain today. The end-of-terrace house cost £13,000, funded by a combination of bank and

Samaritans loans. Through hard work, the branch eventually managed to pay off the loans. The cost of running the branch then was around £15,000 compared with £35,000 today. Samaritans branches are self-funding and are run entirely by volunteers. It has been calculated that the current value of volunteer time at the branch based on the minimum wage is £77,100 pa! Horsham and Crawley Samaritans took 3,172 calls in their first year at Denne Road. Today there are more than 14,000 calls, around 130 visits to the branch and some 700 emails. Anyone needing the Samaritans service or interested in becoming a volunteer can phone (01403) 276273 or (01293) 515151. Volunteers’ ages range from 18-80+. Whether volunteers are talking to people over the phone, via email, texting or face-to-face, confidential emotional support is given without judgement. From this safe space callers gain the strength to help them cope. As Chad once said: “There are people who seem to be ‘ordinary’, but who turn out to be extraordinary. They give their total attention. They completely forget themselves. They listen and listen and listen, without interrupting. They have no message. They do not preach. They have nothing to sell. We call them Samaritans”. Caroline Thomas, Horsham & Crawley Samaritans

here are 14,000 sufferers of dementia in West Sussex alone and in an ageing society this number is set to increase. None of us know if, or when, dementia could strike a loved one, friend, or even oneself. We have all had that unnerving feeling of arriving upstairs, only to have to go down again to remember why we went up in the first place, so let us keep dementia support high on the Government’s agenda – even through these austere times. Help and a friendly face are closer than you think and over the past few years, Careful Hands’ Day Clubs have helped many of those who are passed the first stages as well as increasing numbers of younger clients some in their fifties and sixties. It is well reported that mental stimulation can benefit the sufferer and happy memories benefit everyone and so at our day clubs we offer specialist support and a programme of activities and entertainments that aim to reach forgotten interests, rekindle sociability and build self esteem. We understand that carers and relatives need back-up and support in order to continue caring for their loved one and that respite time is only of value if they can relax if they know that their loved one is in safe and Careful Hands. Taking advantage of our local day care has proven to help carers keep their relative at home longer than they imagined and that

our specialist person centred care really does help both the individual and the whole family. Here are some Carers’ comments … “I would really like to thank you all for making Mum’s life so much more fun. Even when she had a fall, she was determined to come as she enjoyed it so much.” SM, Horsham. “Careful Hands has been a life saver for my husband and me. My husband developed Alzheimers about nine years ago. In September 2009 he went for a walk with his dog, got lost and was missing for 24 hours. After that I could not leave him alone and it is not until something like that happens you realise what a responsibility and tie it is. Careful Hands set us free for a few hours each week, John was very happy and I was able to maybe see a friend and also able to continue working if only for one day a week. The club has been a very important and much loved part of our lives.” CB, Partridge Green. “When my mother first arrived at the club the empathy and patience shown by everyone was amazing. The stimulation from the different activities and the musical entertainment, which she always enjoyed, improved her quality of life immensely.” M&L, Faygate. Five Ways to Get Kids Active
A
round 30% of British children are overweight, due primarily to an unhealthy diet and not enough exercise. Experts state that children should engage in 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and encouraging them to become more active now will help them maintain a healthy weight, improve their general fitness and wellbeing and reduce the risks of serious health problems in the future. The following are five suggestions to help kids get more active. l Walk to school. Often our kids’ lack of activity is due to our busy lifestyle. Factor an extra half hour or so walking to school and back into your daily routine.
l Give them chores. Doing a bit of housework or walking up and down stairs a few times will get the cardiovascular muscles working. l Limit the amount of time spent on the TV or computer. This will free up more time to engage in other more physical activities. l Buy them sports equipment like a ball, racquet or bike for birthdays, instead of toys or sedentary games. This will get them up and moving! l Exercise with them! Go swimming, cycle or do some gardening together. If you incorporate physical activity into your normal routine, you are more likely to keep it up. Good luck! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Billingshurst Primary School Skate Spectacular a Success! Over 500 skaters visited the Billingshurst Primary School three-day Skate Spectacular, 20th-22nd January, raising over £1,900 towards the Outdoor Learning Project, which enhances the children’s outdoor learning facilities. Children of all ages from as young as three took to the rink, some even without their parents’ help to grandparents who came to watch the grandchildren but found themselves joining in the fun. Although many commented that it was harder to skate on than real ice, everyone had fun and for most children it was the falling over that was the best part! Many skaters came on the Friday night, enjoyed it so much and returned each day thereafter. There was a disabled skate chair in the shape of the sleigh which gave younger children the
opportunity to take to the rink by sitting either in the chair themselves or on their parent’s lap. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher, commented; “The event has been a wonderful start to the new year, giving January a great boost after Christmas. We wanted to try something new and different and it has worked very well. Thank you to all our sponsors especially Fowlers, Coco’s Style, Kavanagh’s Budgens and Cracknell Pitt Draffen who have made it possible for this event to take place and to have enabled us to raise such a fantastic sum of money for the school. Thanks also to the numerous parents and school supporters who gave up time to sell tickets, serve refreshments and run stalls and without whom the event would not have been possible”. Bik-Kay Talbot, Co-Chair of BPSCA

The roar of the Chinese Dragon at Billingshurst Primary The reception year children at Billingshurst Primary School had a fun afternoon in January learning about Chinese New Year this week as they celebrated the Year of the Dragon learning to lion dance, wearing traditional Chinese clothes and tasting Chinese food kindly donated by China Brasserie 2 in Billingshurst. The children sampled a variety of food from favourites such as prawn crackers, spring rolls, smoked chicken, egg fried rice to New Year dishes such as dumplings and noodles. Many tried to use chopsticks to sample the food and the children learnt the importance of different kinds of foods at new year. Noodles are especially important as they represent long life and should be slurped and not bitten as that

would shorten your life. Dumplings are eaten as they are shaped like gold bars to represent prosperity for the forthcoming year. Don Burstow and Mr Yee from China Brasserie 2 were more than happy to support the local school and commented, “We are pleased to have been able to broaden the children’s knowledge of Chinese New Year customs with a variety of dishes from the restaurant as well as exciting their taste buds with foods that they may or may not have tried before!” Alison Wood, Reception Leader said, “The children have had a lovely afternoon learning to lion dance and it has been very interesting to learn about the different representation that each food has.” Bik-Kay Talbot, Co-Chair of BPSCA

Caring for garden tools
A
s spring begins it’s time to take stock of our garden tools. Ideally these should have been cleaned, sharpened, polished and carefully stored at the start of winter. If they were you can pat yourself on the back and skip this month’s advice. Still with us? Oh dear, then you need some help. Tools which are badly stored may develop all manner of problems during their enforced rest period. First check electric power tools. Are the plugs and flexes in good, safe working order? If not, have them professionally repaired or replaced. Clean off any dust, then spray the metal surfaces of the tools with some general purpose oil. Turn the tool on so that the oil is worked into all those hard-to-reach areas. If your mower is petroldriven the spark-plugs should have been disconnected when the mowing season finished. If it takes unleaded petrol, then this loses ignition quality over time so ideally should have been siphoned off or run down at that point too. If you didn’t do this, then you’ll need to check the spark plugs and fuel, but before you do that, use a stiff brush to remove all the dust and old grass. You will then need to apply some grease to the height adjusters, turning them to work it through, preventing them from seizing-up. Check the throttle and clutch cables for wear and tear, and oil them, then clean any dust and dry grass out of the air filter. Check the blades – if they are very blunt or damaged, they will need to be replaced or sharpened professionally.
GEORGE A NICHOLLS NCHArb
Electric mowers should have their cable checked, their plastic cover checked, and then be up-ended and any caked grass or dirt cleaned off with a stiff brush. Sharpen or replace the blades. Take a good look at your hand tools. Are shovels, forks and trowels looking sharp and clean? Most of us don’t care enough for these hard-working implements and then wonder why they don’t work as well as they should. Find a large bucket and fill it with about 2.5 kilos of rough builders’ sand and a litre of general purpose oil. Mix it all together until the sand is thoroughly moist. Clean any dried-on soil or rust off the tools using a stiff wire brush, then plunge them into the oily sand and leave them for a day or two. Remove and rub them with a rough cloth. Finally, sharpen the cutting edges with a fine metal file or sharpening stone. Some DIY stores offer this service if you don’t feel confident yourself. Bare wooden handles can be returned to smoothness if you give them a good rub with linseed oil. They’ll be much more comfortable on your hands too. Finally, remember … all of this should have been done before the winter. With this new-found knowledge we can be better prepared in 2012! Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net

And the Winner is… Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …
L
ily chuckled to herself when she heard Sally say to Anne, “The bets are on to see who will be first to produce.” Lily knew she was going to have a baby and so were Hortense and Camille because Utha pen Dragon had visited them. Damson Plum was still too little. She would have to wait until next year. But Lily knew Dottie – a very big pig Sally wasn’t talking abut them. No the race was between the Aunties and the new PIG, Big Dottie. Big Dottie had arrived about a month ago. Anne and the family and Sally had all gone over to Kirdford to look at her and they had decided to buy her. She was to come the next day. Her home was to be the ark and pig pen. Of course the ark was empty because Spotty and Stripy had gone on a ‘very long holiday’, and the freezer was full of lovely sausages and pork chops. Everyone had been quite excited and Lily watched as all the people and Bailey gathered when Dottie arrived and waddled out of the trailer, into the pen. After she had sniffed it all out, she had then checked out the ark and gone inside. Before very long it was Dottie’s ark. She had made it her own with new straw. Dottie was a Gloucester Old Spot pig and she very, very big. It was easy to see she was going to have babies soon. She ate her food and drank her water and wandered around the pen.
She tossed the straw around in the ark and her home was lovely and snug and warm for her babies when they were born. But when was that going to happen? Everyone waited and waited but nothing happened. Then one Friday afternoon Sally, who knew about these things, said that Auntie Jenny and Auntie Tanface, and Great Aunt Teddy were all showing signs that their babies were going to be coming very soon. But who would be first? The bets were on. Lily wondered who would win this race. Saturday came and went. Nothing happened. Sunday came and went. Nothing happened. But on Monday, just as Yvonne was driving off to her Spanish class and Sally was just coming back from feeding the horses, the winner was proclaimed! A plaintive bleat from the paddock as Aunty Jenny cleaned her lovely new baby girl. (Photo shows her at just two minutes old!) Well done Aunty Jenny – Winner of the 2012 First Baby of the Year Race. Worried about worming?
W
orming is often a very confusing subject for most horse owners, but it need not be complicated. Symptoms of worm infestation include colic, weight loss, diarrhoea, poor performance and, in the case of lungworm, coughing. Pinworm often causes intense tail rubbing that can be mistaken for sweet itch. Horses are affected by roundworms, tapeworms and bots, the latter being the larvae of the bot fly that over winter in the horses stomach. Worming Programe. The first port of call when planning your worming programme should be your Veterinary Surgeon or SQP (suitably qualified person); they will discuss your needs with you and get you started on a sensible plan that suits your situation. An owner with one horse co-grazing with sheep will need a vastly different worming programme to a stud with large numbers of young stock! Please don’t take what you read on internet forums as gospel; some of the ‘advice’ provided is truly shocking. You need to ask your Vet or SQP – both have been trained and are qualified to give the best, up to date advice. The old worming programmes of using a chemical wormer at 4-10 weekly intervals depending on active ingredient cease to be advised or recommended. The aim is to get owners to use diagnostic tools such as worm counts and blood tests for tapeworm, and using a wormer only when needed will help to delay the onset of resistance, making wormers more effective over a for longer period. Some horses are more susceptible to worm infestation. Young stock are particularly prone to ascarid (large roundworm) infestation and will need to be treated for these routinely through their first grazing season, thus a programme for a foal will be very different to that of an adult horse. Older horses and ponies can also be more vulnerable to worm infestation especially if their immune system isn’t as good as it once was. Encysted, the small redworm, is a hidden killer. This parasite has the ability to halt its development and encyst into the gut wall over the winter period, it causes a great deal of damage when it emerges, such as anemia, weightloss, diarrheoa and in cases of severe infestation, death may occur. The most dangerous aspect of this parasite is that it doesn’t show up on worm egg counts or blood tests, therefore it must be treated during the winter with the appropriate wormer such as Moxidectin (equest) or a five-day treatment of Fenbendazole (panacur equine guard) which are licensed as effective against this parasite during this stage of its lifecycle. Resistance is becoming more of a problem when dealing with horse worms in this day and age.
32
Resistance is the ability of a population of worms who were once affected by a chemical wormer to resist its action and survive; these worms then become the strongest, breeding and passing on this resistance until we end up with a population unaffected by the wormer. Under dosing and too frequent dosing are big factors in the onset of resistance. Worm counts are becoming more popular. These are done by taking a small amount of the horse’s faeces, the best way is to get the freshest possible and give it a good stir before putting in the sample pot, and sending it in the pot provided to a laboratory to be tested for the presence of worm eggs, the results will come back as counted epg (eggs per gram). These results can be interpreted by your vet or SQP, who will then advise you on the best course of action. Worm counts are usually carried out over the grazing season and can save horses being given unnecessary chemical wormers as a routine course of action. Please be aware worm counts are not infallible, as they only give us an insight into the amount of adult egg laying worms inside the horse. It is perfectly possible to have a horse carrying a high burden of juvenile worms, while producing a low count. Worm counts do not detect tapeworms or encysted small red worms, and it is vitally important to treat these parasites. Pasture Management plays a vital part in worm control, cross grazing with cattle or sheep is excellent as horse worms do not survive in ruminants, thus these animals act as a biological worm hoover! Pooh picking is helpful to remove any worm eggs that may be present in faeces from the pasture. Harrowing is only helpful in hot dry conditions, because the worm eggs are then exposed to sunlight and die off, do not harrow in wet conditions. If you have any worries about your horse’s health ry ask your Veterinary Surgeon for advice, but don’t le d forget that your local SQP can help you plan d y, sa ha an appropriate worming strategy for you , k ly ge over the coming year. ac pp illa t e , u Jeanette Coleman. A Good Read March’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Room – Emma Donoghue Jack is 5. He lives with Ma, in Room, with Bed and Rug and Lamp and Rocker. Each day has its own routine: they wake, they have breakfast, they play games, they watch TV – but not too much or their brains will rot. In the eleven square feet of Room, they do Phys Ed and eat and draw and bathe and do laundry – the everyday tasks of mother and child. Then, at night, Jack has to climb into Wardrobe to sleep, because Old Nick might be coming… At first, Jack’s artless narration is puzzling, but it soon becomes clear that he has no concept of a world outside of Room – everything beyond is Outer Space, and everyday things like dogs and stores are just TV. The reader, however, realises that Jack and his Ma are prisoners, and that Old Nick’s visits are sinister rather than benevolent. Emma Donoghue’s seventh novel was controversial even before it was nominated for the Booker Prize in 2010. She denies that Room is based on the case of Josef Fritzl, saying instead that it was ‘triggered’ by it. And certainly, there is no concentration on the Fritzl figure of Old Nick – Jack is the centre of the book, and his relationship with his Ma is what Donoghue explores. The bond between them is fierce, touching and above all realistic: they love each other beyond all measure, but also get frustrated and angry too – and as the novel moves out of the confines of Room, their relationship is tested still further. Jack’s narration is sharp and funny, bewildered and sad by turns, but it is always convincing. Small details like his reaction to the arrival of a mouse in Room – a real living creature – or the importance of using Meltedy Spoon to eat cereal, are told with the
real intensity of a five-year-old. We see his Ma through his eyes, but begin to understand more than he can about her pain and her strength. The novel is beautifully structured, and while it is a page turner on first reading, it merits a second, more in-depth study. It is not a horror story or a voyeuristic take on real events – instead, it is a quiet, thoughtful portrayal of the love between a parent and a child. It Was A Dark and Stormy Night – Janet and Allan Ahlberg It was a dark and stormy night, and in a cave in the mountains, a little boy called Antonio is telling a story to the brigands who have captured him. The trouble is, they keep interrupting – especially the Chief – and so the story takes a number of surprising turns: killer parrots, treasure, Neapolitan ice cream and a Thingy in the moat, for example. Antonio, however, is made of stern stuff, and he is able to respond to anything that is thrown at him – which is more than can be said for the brigands… From the beginning, we know that Antonio will make it home to his mother and father and five little sisters. But quite how he does it is what makes us read on – and no-one, not even Higgins the English brigand, could predict what happens. As you may expect from the Ahlbergs, this book is funny, clever, gripping and beautifully illustrated. A slightly longer and more complex read than some of their better known works, it is ideal for readers who not only want the comfort of pictures, but also a good deal of text too – a halfway house between picture books and chapter stories. There are plenty of jokes for parents, too, so whether you are reading or being read to, a smile is guaranteed. Destined to become a family favourite, this is a must for five-year-olds everywhere. Rowing the Atlantic – setting off from the Canaries
T
ommy Tippetts, 22, of Kirdford, West Sussex is now on his way to become one of the youngest people ever to row across the Atlantic Ocean solo. He was featured in the October 2011 edition of Village Tweet, page 42 (you can view the article at www.villagetweet.co.uk – click on the Magazine tab). The following was sent in by Caroline and Robert Watson who became friends with Tommy in the Canary Island of La Gomera, off the coast of Africa. Tommy left La Gomera harbour around 0605 this morning – which after two hours’ sleep last night (for us, that is, as it’s San Sebastian day today) was rather early. Still, Tommy was better than us, he went to bed around midnight. We fed him bacon and egg butties (see photo) this morning to give him something to row on as well as filling his flask of hot water for later, and we left our berth in the harbour to wait for Tommy around 5.45am. The little boat came out of the harbour and we accompanied him south until it got light an hour

and a half later. There was quite a long swell, 1-2m, and a strong tail wind of around 18 knots gusting to 22, so he had a good feel for how the boat was handling and he was very happy. We talked via radio to check that was all working and we could see him on AIS and he could see us. He was in great spirits and was pleased to be out rowing again. It was hard for us to turn around, but shortly after 1pm we knew he wanted to go so we left him and returned to the harbour. It’s a lovely sunny day, good following wind and with a speed of 3.5 knots he should make good in-roads in passing El Hierro. All we can do now is track the dot on the AIS and wish him well. Stella John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
S
tella was a lovely girl. The most gorgeous eyes under long dark lashes. Perhaps going a tad fat around the middle and inclined to sway rather a lot when she walked across the meadows. Stella was a Jersey cow. Stella was the herd leader. The one who the rest of the herd would follow behind and obediently step aside to let her pass first through any gate. At around ten years old she was getting ancient by modern standards of a working cow’s age … but in those days she was still a respected and loved member of the herd. Darker than the average Jersey, she still sported a fine pair of crafted horns that curled in two graceful arcs above the gingerish hair of her poll (the area between the horns). I say ‘crafted’ as, like her fellow girls, her horns were trained when she was a youngster to curl round and down towards her forehead so that she met the requirements of the show ring. Nowadays most cows are de-horned soon after birth so that the possible dangers of these weapons are removed before they can cause trouble. Stella had over her long life produced seven calves, the females of these then in turn taking their place in the herd. The bull calves, alas, all taken within 24 hours of birth to the knackers yard. Jersey meat was not recognised as much use as it was slow to beef up and the fat was inclined to have a yellowish tinge. They were all milked in long parlours, fastened by neck chains and heads buried in their mangers munching on mixture of oats and cow nuts, with a couple of shovels of sugar beet pulp and a section of hay for dessert. All, that is, except Stella. She had her own room. A row of calving boxes ran down one side of the yard and it was one of these that Stella had for years decided was the ideal place to watch over her
40
domain. She would lead the herd into the yard, branch away from the head of the line and taking her place inside the stall would survey them all from over the top of the half-door. Despite her status in the herd she was the most gentle of creatures. She loved a fuss and would willingly allow anyone the privilege of scratching her poll. Only once did I see her lose her temper. We had thoughtlessly put a young heifer into Stella’s while we cleaned out the neighbouring one in preparation for her calving. Then we forgot to move her. Stella entered the yard and patiently stood at the closed door waiting for it to be opened. Then she became aware that their was another cow inside her stall. She just swung her head with no apparent effort and connected the woodwork with her stubby horns. The bolt gave way … the door opened … she entered … and the poor creature inside shot out like a startled rabbit and with a look of shear distain Stella entered the stall, turned and over the top of the battered door resumed her inspection of her minions. Eventually and very sadly, Stella reached a point where old age and painful joints made it necessary to have the old girl put to sleep. As a much loved member of the herd we could not bear her to be taken off to market and so we called the vet to carry out the procedure in the farmyard. So after the rest of the herd had all been taken off to the meadows we led the old lass out of her beloved box. The job was done quickly and without her being frightened or aware of anything out of the ordinary. Afterwards with heavy hearts we washed the yard and re-bedded with straw ready for the herd’s afternoon return. They wouldn’t enter. It took over half an hour to persuade them to go in with each and every one of them giving wide berth to Stella’s box. It was a very subdued milking that day. That was over 50 years ago but Stella still lives in my memory. Stella … some cow. John Nash Photo: Miss Mirr (flickr)

Diary of a ‘Commuter’ Smallholder Village Tweet welcomes Michaela Giles, a Billingshurst smallholder
T
edfold Cottage Farm is a family-run smallholding on the outskirts of Billingshurst. The family consists of me, Michaela, my husband Neil and our son Oliver, together we run the smallholding almost singlehanded, even though we both have a commute to work and Oliver attends boarding school Monday to Saturday. Our smallholding comprises of: a nucleus breeding herd of British Saddleback pigs, numerous piglets to keep or for sale and growing pigs of various ages, which can add up to 70+ pigs at times; a flock of Badger Face Welsh Mountain Sheep plus lambs and a breeding flock of Brahma chickens. Throw in a couple of horses, dogs and cats and you have Tedfold Cottage Farm (www.tedfoldcottagefarm.co.uk). To be able to afford our fabulous pig herd we also run pig keeping courses, pig handling workshops, a pig pregnancy detection service and a consultancy service all of which are predominantly performed at the weekends. During the early to late summer months we also show our pigs nationally and it is Neil’s ambition to breed a pig that wins ‘pig of the year’ and I am also the Chairman of the West Sussex Smallholders Club (www.westsussexsmallholdersclub.org.uk), a friendly, growing club based at Brinsbury College. I am not telling you this to show off but to try and demonstrate that if you want to keep livestock but think it is impossible because you work full-time, then have a rethink. Hopefully you will get some inspiration and tips from forthcoming articles. Now to the diary part; it is a little atypical at the time of writing as I am working in New Zealand and Australia for a couple of weeks (for my proper job) so everything is being left to Neil with help from our smallholding friend Athena. January started with the arrival of numerous litters of piglets which we try and time to 1st January so our potential show winners are as big for the show circuit as possible. We also have more litters due in February and beyond as we like to keep our two boars in regular work. Apart from that we concentrate on getting through the worst of the winter and spend most of our time dealing with frozen water issues. I also spend the time updating our pig keeping course manuals
42
before the courses start again at the end of February to keep the advice current. The end of February is often the start of lambing and so we need to be prepared with our kit ready and super keen observation of the ewes to see who will go into labour first, luckily for Neil I will be back by then. We let our ram run with the ewes all year round which means we are often not sure exactly when it will start and it can take over a month to complete, but for us it works and we think it makes for a happier ram. Our Badger Face sheep are excellent mothers and rarely require assistance if we keep their weight in check by correct feeding and regular body scoring (assessing condition by feeling them). They all lamb outdoors and we then take them indoors once lambed for a check over, dag out (removing soiled matter from the ewe’s back end), umbilical spray (on the lamb to help prevent infections) and blow fly prevention treatment (ewe and lambs). If all is well the ewe is given extra feed and put back out. We find that we lose the least lambs this way and the ewes are certainly happier as they are kept in their family group for most of the time. We will also be getting our egg incubators out for a clean and sanitizing treatment in preparation for the Brahmas when they start laying again. We have Lemon Pyle Brahmas that the purists in the chicken world do not recognize but we like them and think they are absolutely stunning to look at. All in all the January to March period is the ‘getting ready’ period with piglets and lambs being born, pig courses starting and then chicks in time for Easter. Fantastic, we wouldn’t have it any other way now. Michaela Giles

Computers
Backup, Backup, Backup! First in a series of sound computer and IT advice from Simon Thomas
T
he most important part of your computer is your data. These are the files you have collected or created yourself, your photos, movies, documents, etc. In the event of a serious system crash, you can usually restore the operating system and programs that you use, but your personal data may be irreplaceable. Although emergency data recovery services are available, these will cost money and there is no guarantee that everything you want can be restored. A better approach is to start a regular routine of backing up your important data. Your data should be backed up as often as possible. Identify the folders that hold your important data and only back those folders up. To find out where your files are being stored, use ‘Save As’ instead of just hitting ‘Save’ when you create or update your files, and note the location the program is using to write your data. Add that folder to your backup list. Backing up your whole hard drive is an option and means that you can restore you computer exactly as it was when the back up was taken. There are many ways for you to make a backup, some of the more general methods are: l Simply copying files from one location to another.

Zipping or compressing files or folders then moving the Zipped file to an alternate location. l Using Windows Backup to automatically create a backup. l Third party backup utilities. For Apple Mac users backups are made easier as, since OS X (10.5 Leopard), Time Machine was built in which backs up effortlessly to another hard drive. This may sound like common sense but never store your backups on your main hard drive. If your hard drive fails, your backup files will be lost along with everything else. Ideally, backups of your most important data should not be stored in the same room or even on the same site as the original because if you were to suffer a house fire your backups will be destroyed as well as your computer. Some common back up options include CDs & DVDs, mini USB drives, external hard drives and online data backup. Backups can be seen as a painful process but with a little thought and routine a reliable system can be put in place. If you aren’t already managing the backup process for your data effectively then you should start today before it’s too late! Simon Thomas (techgeek@tech-geek.co.uk) l

Lifestyle Fitness Fun exercise for a healthy lifestyle. Low impact aerobics for those who aspire to look like Meryl Streep rather than Rhianna… (oh come on, let’s be realistic!) If you’ve never been to an exercise class in your life, don’t own any Pineapple fitness clobber and want to laugh about muffin tops, bingo wings and wobbly bits - rather than see them in the mirror, then Lifestyle Fitness is for you! Fridays 11am – Noon. For details ‘phone Pam Wilson on 01403 822028. We have excellent facilities for training, meetings and conferences; call us for details or go to our website We also have excellent party facilities and host the following weekly activities: Rosemary Conley, Zumba Dance, Karate, WeightWatchers, Table Tennis, Badminton, Floristry, Short Mat Bowls, Spanish, Yoga, Geology, Ballroom Dancing, Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, TAG Youth Club, Rainbow Toddlers, Lacemaking, Psychology, Craft Classes, Sketching, Watercolour Painting, Spiritual Healing, Local History, Pilates, Basket-Making, Reiki, Children’s Dance classes, IT training for the IT-illiterate and Blood Donor sessions (for which no training is needed – just lie back and see how clean the ceiling of the Main Hall really is!) Details of all our activities and facilities are on our website - see below. Alternatively, give us a call to find out not only what excellent facilities we have, but also how very reasonable we are, too! (A real person will answer the ‘phone, although it won’t be Sarah M, who’s been poached by the Parish Office, alas! Her successor will, we hope, start very soon).
