ell, last month I said that the extreme winds and floods are hopefully behind us. I clearly spoke too soon and, halfway through February, as I write this, they are still very much with us! March brings with it (no, not more floods!) spring and of course Mothering Sunday. Several of our advertisers are offering Mother’s Day promotions so why not treat your mother and make her day. Next month’s issue is of course the Easter edition. If you are planning a special event in the community, or maybe your business is running an Easter promotion, be sure to let Village Tweet know about it! Grahame Cover photo: A real Daffy Duck! Bakers are Born and not Made!
eet Mark Sheath, Master Baker: Billingshurst’s recipe for success! In 1987, at Lindsays Bakery, Potton Bedfordshire, Mark commenced his bakery career as an apprentice Baker Confectioner. Mark remembers, “I was hungry to acquire new skills and soon found myself in a new position as Commis Pastry Chef in a hotel in Essex. There I learned pastry, chocolate and patisserie skills before moving on to refine my craft in various 4- and 5-Star hotels.” Always keen to travel Mark worked at a hotel on the Channel Island of Sark as well as working at sea for P&O on the cruise ship Oriana in 1995. “I then took a year out and baked my way around Australia!” Returning to the UK Mark helped set up a bakery pastry section for a catering company, all products being made in house from scratch. In June 1997 Mark married Helen and the couple emigrated to Australia for three years where their son Fraser was born. On their return to England in 2000 Mark started working as a Development Pastry Chef for a patisserie company in Birmingham. 2002 saw the
birth of a daughter, Kirsty. In November 2005, now living in Partridge Green, where the family still lives, Mark’s career moved up a gear with a move to Kates Cakes at Ashington as Product Development Manager. Following five wonderful years at Kates Cakes, Mark was head-hunted to work for an American Bakery business as Technical Sales Manager. Mark brings the story up to date: “Last year I was contacted by a bakery agent who was marketing the sale of Jengers Bakery in Billingshurst. This is where I first met Barry and Jillian Sowter who have owned and run the bakery for 25 years and wish to retire. “During the summer I started baking with Barry on Friday evenings to see what makes Jengers Bakery so special. Great tasting products combined with friendly service was the clear answer. A winning recipe! “I would like to take this opportunity to wish Barry and Jill a happy and healthy retirement. I look forward to welcoming you to Jengers Craft Bakery, where it will be business as usual.”

"The Care Comfort Company provided the best possible care for my mother that we could have asked for. Sitting through the night with someone who is nearing end of life is hugely demanding both physically and emotionally. Tina and her team always had my mother’s best interests at heart and made it a priority to maintain her comfort and dignity at all times. Without their support we would not have been able to keep mum at home until her death. We will always owe them a debt of gratitude.” JF

Slinfold Charity Fête
S
linfold Charity Fête will be held at Slinfold Village Hall on Saturday 22nd March, 10am-4pm. We are really excited to be holding our first Charity Fête to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Sussex Bowens Children’s Clinic. We have many volunteers making beautiful items to buy and we will also have Polka Dot House (www.polkadothouse.co.uk) selling their beautiful wares. The sale is only a week before Mother’s Day and a month before Easter so perfect for buying gifts! We are holding a raffle, with a free prize draw for everyone who buys on the day, as well as a fabulous auction at 2pm, with the opportunity to buy a ferry trip and a fantastic wine tasting! A full list of prizes is available from nclarkson@aol.com and you can also send silent bids until midday on the 22nd. We will be serving tea and coffee all day and selling cakes to eat in or take away. For the kids, we have Lucky Dip and face painting. We also have some of the fabulous teams from Relay For
Life Horsham setting up stalls with us and visiting Bowens therapists explaining their service. We are Nic and Sally (pictured). Nic (on the left) lost her mum to cancer in 2012, much too soon, and is organising this event to help keep her mum’s memory alive. Nic’s mum loved children so Sally and Nic decided to use the event to raise money for Sussex Bowens Children’s Clinic, as they work so hard to help children with Cerebral Palsy, which Sally’s son suffers from. We would really love to see as many people as possible in Slinfold Village Hall on 22nd March – please come along to support us! We will make you very welcome. Mother’s Day
Make Your Mother’s Day
F
rom the day you have a baby or adopt a child, your life changes forever. People tell you this when you’re pregnant, but it’s only when it happens that you really understand what they mean. Suddenly there’s someone who depends on you entirely. Every decision you make from now on will be based on their needs or desires. Being a mother can be the best of jobs and the worst of jobs. For every heart-warming moment of pride and loveliness, there’s a blazing row or slammed door (but hopefully with a hug and a sorry afterwards). Mums have to take on every role in the family: carer, teacher, agony aunt, sergeant major, personal assistant, taxi driver… and it doesn’t stop when the children leave home. Now approaching 40, I still rely on my mum for advice, friendship, help with childcare, emergency loans and the occasional kick up the backside to get things done. It’s only as you get older, especially if you have children of your own, that you realise how your parents felt as you grew up – why they made you do your homework, go to bed, stop fighting with your brother, eat properly, save money and above all, be careful! Mother’s Day gives us the perfect opportunity to say thank you to our mums for everything they
have done and still do for us. It’s lovely to buy or make a card and give flowers and chocolates. You can also do something special to show you care – maybe take on a job that she hates or treat her to a day of pampering. But this year, why not go beyond the message in the card and write a few personal lines of your own to tell your mother how much you love her. Make sure she knows that she really is the best mum in the world (like mine). Alex Albrighton Mother’s Day is celebrated all around the world, usually in March or in May. In the UK, it is a mixture of a Christian tradition, and the celebration of motherhood that began in the USA in the early 20th century. During the 16th century, people in service would return to their home or ‘mother’ church on the fourth Sunday in Lent – Mothering Sunday. Mother’s Day as we know it became a regular event in the 1950s, largely thanks to businesses keen to exploit its commercial potential. The founder of Mother’s Day in the US, Anna Jarvis, eventually regretted campaigning to get the day recognised because it became so commercialised. She hated the fact that people would buy a card with a printed message rather than writing a letter.

hen Billingshurst Rotary Club met on 6th January it was to disperse funds to four of their favourite charities – at home and overseas. Christmas, once again, saw members manning the Santa’s Grotto at Newbridge Nurseries for several weekends and, through the generosity of the owner Nigel Waite, who had provided all the gifts, £4,462 was raised. Nigel was there to hand over cheques for £950 to Rosie Wyer of Dame Vera Lynn Trust and £3,600 to Jayne Todd of Chestnut Tree House. Members learned that Chestnut Tree House has been in operation for ten years and, having started with the facilities to help 30 families, they are now able to help 300 families that need hospice and respite care. Children from the Dame Vera Lynn Trust use Chestnut Tree House for respite visits. Jayne told members that Lady Sarah Clutton had given the hospice yet more land so that a sensory woodland walk could be planted. Billingshurst and District Rotary Club members also run the annual Billingshurst Show in conjunction with the Scouts. Half the proceeds from the Show in June 2013 was £4,900 and members agreed to give £1,000 to The Children of Sumatra, and another £1,000 to the David Tilley Foundation. The Children
of Sumatra was started ten years ago when a local Sussex girl married in Indonesia, and found that many children suffered from congenital cleft lip and palate. She appealed to Billingshurst Rotarians for financial help and the £5,000 that was sent immediately started to make a huge difference. Members were told that last year more children than ever were operated on and another 46 are being treated for TB, to get them well enough for the operation. The charity also helps with dental work and speech therapy to give the youngsters a much better chance in life. The David Tilley Foundation was started by a member, and his widow and son have continued the good work supporting a school in Tanzania. Billingshurst Rotary Club now sponsor three students at the school. Storrington Conservation Society
he Society is now in its 25th year, and continues to fulfil its aim of ‘Making Storrington a better place for its people and wildlife’. Amongst other things, this involves working parties of volunteers. We meet usually on the first Saturday of each month from September to June. We carry out tasks to improve the environment in and around Storrington. Our work includes pond care, management of trees and shrubs, removal of litter and the maintenance of footpaths. We conserve what is of value in the interests of the community. New members of all ages are always welcome. No previous experience is necessary, just the wish to join a group of like-minded cheerful workers, who enjoy fresh air and exercise in
achieving something very worthwhile. The equipment needed is provided. Our main long-term project is to improve Fryern Dell for the benefit of native plants and wildlife. It is the habitat for a whole range of species, which need care and management in order to thrive. We also have a programme of talks, covering a range of conservation topics, the most recent being on Saturday 22nd February at the Village Hall, given by Fran Southgate from Sussex Wildlife Trust. Our next working party takes place on Saturday 15th March at Fryern Dell, at 10am. More information is to be found on our website www.storringtonconservation.org.uk or contact Mick Denness on (01903) 745971 Stuart Kersley

Support Billingshurst Fire Fighters charity car wash
T
he winter of 2014 will be remembered for its extreme wet and windy weather causing massive disruptions nationwide, with the south of the country including West Sussex receiving the lion’s share. Your local Fire Station has been busy with calls, many due to the bad weather, and I’m sure were all hoping that March can bring us some sun… fingers are crossed! Come rain or shine, this month we bring you our first Charity Car Wash of 2014, raising money for injured fire-fighters and their families, a great cause that needs the local communities support. Watch the guys bring a sparkle to your car which you may not have seen for years while you can dig deep for any donations. Please keep your eyes open for our usual banners in front of the fire station as the date has not yet been set
but it will be in March. Once the car wash has been completed we will hopefully be welcoming some new recruits who have been undergoing training for the past few months. Does the Fire Service interest you? Would you be interested in becoming a ‘Retained Fire Fighter’? Do you live or work within four minutes of the Fire Station? If your answer is “Yes” then this could be your new part-time career. and a very rewarding one too. All the guys on station have other full-time employment but respond to emergency calls during the day, evening or weekends. Pop down on Monday nights 7-9pm to find more out more details and meet the crew. So, see you all at the March Car Wash. Last March (see photo) we raised £937.10, lets make this one the biggest one yet! Dan Game
Live-in care specialists because “There’s no place like home” Our clients have told us that as they get older, living alone makes them feel vulnerable and their homes can come to feel isolating as they lack the confidence to go out alone. Having a live-in carer can give someone in that position years more freedom. With live-in care, they can enjoy their hobbies, maintain their friendships and keep their pets. Where people have come to us looking for care and support for their parents, they tell us it gives them peace of mind to know that someone is there to keep their parents company, get help if they fall and make sure they remember to take their medication at the right time. Surprisingly live-in care is a more affordable option than leaving your own home, so if you would like to know more, give our friendly team a call. “Thanks as always for your unfailing support” Jane “Thank heavens for the likes of Sally and Lynne” Juliet “Many thanks for your support – I don’t know what we’d do without you…” Rosie “Mum and Dad appreciated your kindness and I shall certainly recommend your services” Kay

Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce hosts award-winning marketer at sell-out event
O
n 22nd January at Billingshurst’s Community & Conference Centre 70 business-minded people were glued to their seats for over an hour when Amazon UK’s No1 best-selling small business marketing author, Dee Blick, was guest speaker of the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce. ‘The Marketing Masterclass’, delivered by the Horsham-based writer and marketing guru, coincided with the launch of her latest book, The 15 essential Marketing Masterclasses for your small business. Each attendee went home with a signed copy. Delivering some key essentials of her advice, Ms Blick emphasised the individual talents of small businesses, “So often, these strengths are obvious to the companies themselves yet are overlooked, but are of great interest to customers, so use them”. Ms Blick stressed that marketing is not a ‘one off’ and needs a regular commitment of time – even if it is a few hours every Sunday. She said that personalisation of materials is essential and makes them powerful. “Resist ‘cutandpasteitis’”, she stressed, and a company’s imagery – its identity, logo and the quality and style of every presentation – reflects the company itself. “Move outside your comfort zone and do things differently”, she said. “Set goals and take calculated risks”. Ms Blick challenged the notion that in today’s cyberworld of social media, that ‘traditional marketing’ doesn’t work. “It depends on your audience”, she said, giving examples of how Facebook and Twitter may be right for some
but simple, direct mailers may be best for others. “Be brilliant at the basics”, she said, “and see marketing as an investment, not an expense”. Introducing the highly respected speaker, Chamber Co-Chair, Susan Venturi, said, “Dee is a star in the marketing firmament and we are lucky to have her here in Billingshurst tonight. This presentation is the first in our Chamber’s Trophy Events programme, and it is our objective that everyone goes away from each having learned something that will help their business. That is the Chamber living its strategy to provide members with an ‘extra dimension’”. Dee Blick concluded, “I was so excited to be invited by the Chamber and to present their first Trophy Event seminar. The room was packed and the evening buzzed. The networking was incredible”. Martin Spurrier, Public Relations Officer Dee’s book is available on Amazon at just £9.99. “If you run a small business it could be the best tenner you ever spent.” Village Tweet Photo: Dee Blick presents her Marketing Masterclass to the Billingshurst Chamber of commerce The Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce exists to provide its Members with an ‘extra dimension’ to help them achieve objectives they might not be able to achieve alone. Book reviews / About the house
A Good Read March’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett My Autobiography – Alex Ferguson Everyone knows who Alex Ferguson is – controversial, yes, but without doubt the most successful football manager of modern times. On its release, this became one of the fastest selling football books of all time, with fans queuing at midnight to get their hands on a copy. Headlines were made by Ferguson’s pronouncements on the quality of his own players and those who starred for other teams. Shortly afterwards, the book hit the headlines when readers discovered a number of factual errors in the text. Bearing all of that in mind, should you buy a copy? If you are a Manchester United fan, then the answer is that you probably have a copy already. If not, what will you get? The book mainly focuses on Ferguson’s last seasons in charge at Old Trafford, and his final year in particular, with some detailed rundowns of key games. In between, there are chapters devoted to memorable friends and adversaries – notably Roy Keane, David Beckham, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho. Ferguson tells a good story, and as you might expect, he has a huge stock of anecdotes about his time in charge. He also shows an encyclopaedic knowledge of the game and offers a real insight into the scouting and signing process at a Premier League club. However, if you have read any of the articles published at the time the book was released, chances are that you have heard the best tales already, and certainly the best lines. The chapter on Keane is a prime example – the argument in the changing

room is undoubtedly dramatic, but comes as no real surprise. The now legendary boot-kicking incident with Beckham is equally familiar, and offers no great insight. I bought this book hoping to learn something new about what makes Ferguson tick and how he achieved his phenomenal success. I finished it rather disappointed, feeling that I hadn’t found out a great deal – other than the general message that if Fergie is not always right, then he is 99% of the time. For the fans, a must. For the general reader, maybe not. Mary Poppins – PL Travers Have you read Mary Poppins? I know, you’ve seen the film, but have you read the books on which it is based? I would have sworn that I had, but very recently discovered that it wasn’t the case – and what a fabulous surprise! Admittedly, most of us new to the books will read them with Julie Andrews squarely in our minds – and why not? There will also be moments which are very familiar, such as taking tea with the table in the air and strolling through the paintings with Bert. However because the first book is really a collection of short stories tied together – some of those stories will be delightfully new. The best thing about Mary Poppins is her capacity to surprise, from her magic medicine bottle to her collection of tales for every occasion. She may be temperamental, but it is easy to see why the children in the story adore her – and young readers will too.

Billingshurst – The History of a West Sussex Village
B
illingshurst Local History Society has produced an hour-long video recording the history of Billingshurst. The video will be shown at the Society’s meeting at the Community & Conference Centre on 13th March at 7.30pm after which copies will be for sale on DVD and Blu-ray. Shot in high-definition the video relates the history of the village from scattered farmsteads in Roman times to the present day. It grew around Stane Street, the Roman road linking London and Colchester, later becoming the A29. This was followed by the impact of the Arun Navigation, the Wey and Arun Canal, the railway and the internal combustion engine. Many buildings are covered, as is local industry; some companies have survived while others have disappeared into obscurity. One example is Ray Stiles’ factory in Station Road which produced the Whirlwind vacuum cleaner in the ’twenties. This ‘cleaner sweeper’ was remarkable for needing no electricity. King George V was so impressed he bought one for the Palace! The factory was given over to war work in the ’forties, and then changed ownership a number of times before eventually being demolished to be replaced by flats.
The video also looks at people past and present who have made an impact on the village, mostly for its good but one whose criminal activity led to his burial in the Convict Cemetery in Bermuda! No history of a village would be complete without reference to the effect the two world wars had on its menfolk and Billingshurst is no exception. Particularly poignant in this centenary of the commencement of the First World War, are the numerous brothers’ names on the War Memorial by St Mary’s Church. The video ends with a look at some of the events and activities which take place in Billingshurst today. This video will appeal not only to local historians but also to those who live in and around the village. The video was shot and edited by Charles Chatwin, who also narrates, and is priced at £10 DVD and £13 Blu-ray. Storrington Dramatic Society presents the classic
The Importance of Being Earnest
W
hilst it is certainly important for a young man to have the quality of earnestness, is it really necessary for him to be called Ernest? This is the dilemma explored in Storrington Dramatic Society’s forthcoming production of Oscar Wilde’s famous comedy of manners, The Importance of Being Earnest. Young men-abouttown, Jack (Simon Berry, making his debut for SDS) and his friend Algernon (Sam Standen), are keen to woo feisty young women, Gwendolen (Emily Hale) and Cicely (Maddy Gilmore in her first leading role). But they must do battle with formidable Lady Bracknell (Angela Chapple, relishing the opportunity to release her inner Dame Edith Evans), who is adamant that they should not succeed. The two friends come up against another obstacle; the girls are determined only to marry men by the name of Ernest! Local clergyman, Canon Chasuble (Roy Stevens), who arrives on the scene expecting merely a pleasant afternoon stroll with Cicely’s governess, the buttoned-up Miss Prism (Amanda Hislop), is surprised to receive two requests for immediate baptism. Miss Prism, meanwhile, is nursing a secret of her own. Will her revelation smooth the path to true love, or will it create yet more bumps in the road? Aided and abetted by servants, Lane (Michael Chapple) and Merriman (Charlotte Amey), Jack and Algernon do their best to persuade the girls of their

intentions, while inventing any number of disreputable brothers and invalid friends along the way. Wilde’s sparklingly witty script is full of lines that audiences will recognise; the most famous being, of course, Lady Bracknell’s horrified exclamation when confronted by Jack’s disclosure that he was found as a baby in an item of luggage – “A HANDBAG!” And Downton Abbey fans will see a great deal of Dame Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess in the character of this relic of a bygone age still asserting her authority. Director Sue Goble says that, with The Importance of Being Earnest on the syllabus for many A levels and GCSEs, tickets for the show are likely to sell very quickly. Priced at £8, with a student concession rate of £5, they can be obtained from the Box Office outlets at Fowlers Estate Agent in The Square at Storrington and Nisa Local in Haglands Lane, West Chiltington, or on-line via the website www.storringtondramatics.co.uk. Andy Ritchie – talented local woodcarver
V
illage Tweet recently talked to Andy Ritchie and being impressed with his creations Editor Grahame asked him to say a few words about himself and his work. Over to you Andy… “When I retired seven years ago I was looking for something to do to pass the time. We visited the ‘Vivartis’ art exhibition in Wormley, and one of the exhibits was a splendid red kite made in bronze. I wondered, out loud, whether I could make something similar in wood, and received the reply, “Oh don’t be so silly!” “Always one to rise to a challenge I set to work, and entered the result, together with a kestrel, hovering, into the following year’s exhibition. To my surprise and delight the pieces both sold on the opening day. Thus my retirement
hobby was established. “My subject matter is all from nature – such as hummingbirds, woodpeckers, nuthatches, eagles, kites, kestrels, butterflies and dragonflies etc. I do not stain any of the woods I use – I try and pick a wood that is the right colour for the piece I am making – which precludes bluetits and kingfishers as there is no naturally blue wood! “My ‘five minutes of fame’ moment came two years ago when I appeared on BBC’s Handmade Revolution with Paul Martin. Sadly I was not among the winners! “I exhibit twice a year at the Appart exhibition (Vivartis’ new name) and I am happy to undertake commissions. Andy Ritchie (01403) 752331

The Laundry John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
M
any moons ago, when life seemed so much simpler and the sun always shone in summertime, I started my working life in farming… Leaving home at 15 and heading straight into agricultural training I was, to say the least, not that experienced in what you girls call housework. College had attempted to instil some form of selfpreservation in me, but I confess that the idea of washing and ironing was something that was still in its most primordial state in my knowledge. So, when myself and a fellow student were left at our first farm employment and installed in a nearby chicken farm which included our ‘digs’, the thought of housekeeping was not at the forefront of our list of priorities. The dairy farm we had been allocated to was a lovely place. A small herd of delightful Jersey cows, all hand-milked, a couple of bulls and a collection of young heifers growing on for replacements for the herd as the ‘old girls’ ceased their working life. Our hours were from 6.30am to around 5.30 in the afternoon with one day off each a week. On bank holidays and Christmas we all went in so that the milking could be done quickly and we could all have a few hours off during the day. Looking back it now seems a strict and dogged workload, but at the time we regarded it as the norm and took it all in our stride especially as the pay was £2 per week all found, with overtime at a tanner an hour (that’s two and a half pence decimal). Anyway, back to my original thread. Hand-milking cows is not the cleanest of jobs. There was always the occasional clout round the face with a delicately decorated tail and leaning against the side of the animal on colder days may have given the milker a warm shoulder, but it also imparted a smell that clung to you as a permanent fixture. Of course you very quickly became used to the aroma and failed to notice it when you too had adopted the familiar bovine pheromone. It was quite a while before it dawned on me why I was always served so quickly in the village shop as I called in for my Woodbine fix. However, there was something far worse when hand-milking than just the animals’ scent. As we milked there was the inevitable splashing of milk that dribbled onto the inner side of the calf muscles. The milking bucket was clamped between the
34
crossed ankles of the milker to make sure that any stray kick from the beast did not dislodge the contents down the dung channel that runs beside you. As a result our jeans received a coating of rich Jersey milk twice a day. This was inclined to produce the equivalent of a double dose of starch to the lower trouser legs. When they could stand up by themselves in the corner of the bedroom was when we began to think that maybe we ought to think about washing them. Now, removing this thick layer of solidified fats from our not too well preserved jeans called for careful thinking. No washing machines of course. So we would lay them with great care on the concrete of the yard, douse them with scalding water from the sterilizing boiler, and then scrub them hard with the stiff yardbroom. On the whole it worked reasonably well. They shrunk a tad, but that was to be expected. They faded a little bit, but we didn’t mind. Then came the day when I had left them just a little too long before deciding that they should receive their treatment. The blasted stuff refused to leave the denim. It assumed the consistency of soft grease but its grip on the cloth was tight and determined. Now, young lads left to their own devises can often be quite resourceful. In the dairy where all the milking equipment was cleaned and stored was a substance that had magical properties. I believe its name was something like Cloros, or similar, anyway, it was a cleaning and sterilizing liquid, it would even roughen concrete if used neat! Just an eggcup full in 10 galls of water would clean the milking machines a treat. We later found that it would remove nicotine stains from your fingers if you left them immersed in it till you could no longer stand the pain. Wonderful stuff! I was feeling a trifle miffed that my first efforts had failed so I was generous, perhaps just a little too generous. I left the offending garment in the bucket along with the mixture for around half an hour. They came out immaculate. No stains, no milk residue, no colour. And no stitching. You learn over the years don’t you. Life is one long lesson in how to grow old with as few disasters as possible. We all have had them, and now look back on some of them with a chuckle or smile. The mistakes of youth. Just think, the more you’ve made, the more of those memories you have. Isn’t life grand! John Nash

Back in the saddle
W
ith spring well on its way (hopefully!) many of you will be turning your thoughts to the longer daylight hours and the better weather and be itching to get some extra riding in. For most leisure riders the winter months often mean curtailing riding activities to weekends as the dark evenings and poor weather takes its toll. For those lucky enough to have indoor schools or floodlit arenas and who have been mostly schooling in the evenings will welcome the opportunity to get out and about whether that means competing or simply hacking out with friends. Making sure yourself and your horse are brought back to full work slowly and carefully will play dividends and neither of you will want and injury due to doing too much too soon! Many owners are very diligent about keeping their horses happy and healthy but often neglect their own aches and pains; it is a very good idea to have an MOT for ourselves as riders as the way we sit and move will have a compounding effect on our horse. Pilates is excellent for horse riders and can help with body alignment and core strength, there are even classes aimed specifically at riders, ask at your local riding club for recommendations – some riding clubs do rider fitness clinics which can be great fun as well as a way of keeping fit. Swimming and cycling are also great ways to get fit and build the stamina needed for long days in the saddle. If you are aiming to compete with your horse this summer a few lessons would be an excellent idea. As well as giving you a benchmark of yours and your horse’s level and abilities, lessons also help to build the confidence and partnership of horse and rider and give you goals to aim towards. Ask around for recommendations of good trainers and instructors. Many riding clubs offer subsidised training sessions and these are a great way to gain access to trainers who would otherwise be very expensive if booked privately. Riding club camps can also be a fantastic experience where you get plenty of tuition, the chance to try new equine activities as well as having a great social side to them with evening cook outs and the chance to relax and go over the day’s activities.

For something a bit different how about booking a session on a mechanical horse? These are becoming very popular and are a great tool for assessing yourself as a rider and many issues can be picked up and addressed. Another bonus is that you will always be able to have your lesson whatever the weather! There are many people out there who have ridden in the past but have given up to pursue a career or raise a family and are keen to return to riding. There are several ways to go about this. The first is to find a good riding school; the British Horse Society have a list of approved riding establishments and word of mouth from the local horse community are an excellent way to find the best school for your needs. You can opt for a group or private lesson and you will be matched with a horse suited to your ability. If you have experience of horse care and are a competent rider, even if a little rusty, but work and family commitments means you are unable to care for a horse full time then sharing may be an option. Many horse owners find themselves short of time and money and opt to have someone to share their horse to help out with this. Adverts for sharers can be found in tack shops and on horsey social networking sites. When looking to share a horse it is vitally important you are honest about your abilities and it is advisable to try the horse a few times before making finally committing yourself. Some owners are happy to let you ride in return for doing jobs such as poo-picking or mucking out; others prefer a financial contribution. Make sure you have a written agreement in place of exactly what is required of both parties this should include a notice period should either party want to terminate the agreement. It is also important that adequate insurance cover is in place if you are riding or handling other people’s horses. Many insurance companies have specific rider only policies that can be tailored to suit your needs. Happy riding! Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Living with Laika – ‘I know where magnetic North is!’
S
hades of Glastonbury 2005! It’s time to slip on my crampons and jump into my waders as Laika and I attempt to negotiate the sodden woods and fields. It really is hard going with every step an effort where the floor can slide under you, where innocent ooze can harbour a secret depth and where mud-splattered clothes are a fact of life! Laika is impervious to it all and it is for her sake that I am once more venturing away from the tarmac and into our newly formed wetlands where the oak and hazel predominate. Yes I will tolerate her damp doggy smell, the daily washing and drying of copious towels and the monthly visits to the grooming parlour. Visits to the woods for Laika are always more pleasurable when she finds a friend to play with and recently she spent a happy hour pursuing and being pursued by Jovis, a male black Labrador of similar age and size. The hurly-burly of the chase was intermittently interrupted by serious, dedicated games of Tug of War with Jovis cannily employing a short jerking technique while Laika stoically gripped the sticks with front legs taut in resistance and paws disappearing into the mire. What fun and of course, I was able to make a new friend as our hounds had a wonderful work-out and a guaranteed good night’s sleep! Well, it has been the wettest January ever recorded in
the south of England. Apparently, the reason for this mild, wet weather has been the predominance of west and south-west winds bringing mild moist air in from the Atlantic – yes, we can blame the Jet Stream for that! Now what we need is a strong cold wind from the north, from the North Pole in fact, bringing proper winter weather and I know precisely in which direction that is! You see Laika has been taking part in a serious scientific study to ‘firm up’ (sorry) the finding that dogs have a “highly significant axial preference for north-south alignment during defecation”. Now this assertion results from almost 2,000 observations over a two-year period with dogs acting like compass needles when they need to defecate. OK, so wolves are said to use magnetic fields to navigate so why shouldn’t dogs be aware of the Earth’s magnetic North – after all, the scientists write, isn’t there lots of anecdotal evidence of dogs returning home from large distances. Now, all I have to do is to note the time of day, the weather, and where Laika’s head would be pointing if it were a compass needle – simple?! Anyway, if you happen to see someone holding a compass and a notebook while avidly watching a GSD defecating – it’s me! Oh, yes… Laika has to be off the leash for this experiment! Ron Myal

Taking the hard line with soft-ware…
B
Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services
uying a computer, or more than one if you run a business, is a relatively expensive matter – what makes it even more so is all the software you need to buy on top of that initial outlay. The total can be an eye-popping one to say the least – especially if you need more than one licence. So, whether you are a personal user or buying software to help run your business, there are always freeware (or open source) options that can save you money. Here are our top picks… Keep it safe and sound. Although it was mentioned in one of our earlier articles last year, having anti-virus protection on your machine is so important we thought we’d tell you about it again. AVG is one of the best free anti-virus programmes out there. It’s simple to install and easy to manage. Download it here: http://free.avg.com. Browse the web. Our favourite free web browser is Mozilla Firefox. It is fast, stable and offers enough add-ons to make sure it works exactly as you want it to. There are lots of versions out there so make sure you get the latest one here: www.mozilla.org. Access your emails. Email is a must for most people these days and if you don’t want to pay over £100 for Outlook then take a look at Thunderbird (another Mozilla creation). Installation and setup is
easy, the spam filter is very good and it does not require any sort of registration. It also has lots of add-ons available so you can get this email client to do almost anything you need. It’s is also available on the Mozilla website. Edit your photos. Digital cameras have changed the world of photography forever and many of us have more photos than we know what to do with. And if you want to make the most of those special snaps, most editing software costs a fortune. XnView is a great option that’s totally free! It includes effects, filters and many other features you would not expect for free. Download it here: www.xnview.com. Step outside the Office. Microsoft Office is a very useful suite of software tools and its popularity speaks for itself. But £250 for the professional suite is not a small sum, so we suggest you give Open Office a try. It is a well-established piece of open source software and does an excellent job of replacing MS Office. You can download it here: www.openoffice.org. We hope you find this list of open source software programmes a handy and cost-effective insight into the available alternatives to the usual paid for options.
