elcome to the March issue of Village Tweet, another packed one. At last, there are glimpses of spring with daffodils pushing through and, perhaps the biggest reminder of the onset of spring: the clocks going foward an hour on 25th March. March also sees Mother’s Day on the 11th and Easter right at the end of the month. Finally, a plug for the Billingshurst Fire Station’s annual Charity Car Wash day on Saturday 24th March. Just turn up between 10am and 3pm and let the firefighters loose on your car with their powerful hoses while you enjoy a cuppa. All donations go to The Firefighters Charity (www.firefighterscharity.org.uk) so please be generous. See page 21 for full details. Grahame Cover: Don’t forget Mother’s Day on 11th March! Boiled fruit cake METHOD
1. Place the first eight ingredients into a large saucepan and bring it to the boil. 2. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 20 minutes, then set aside to cool. 3. Heat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4. Line a deep 20cm/8" circular cake tin with greaseproof paper. 4. Mix the beaten eggs well into the fruit mix. It’s important that the mixture has cooled because if it’s too warm the eggs will cook! Then sieve the flour and baking soda into the mixture and mix well. 5. Pour into the cake tin and bake for 1-1½ hours until cooked through (when a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean). If the cake is browning too quickly reduce the temperature a little. 6. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the tin for fifteen minutes, then turn out on to a rack. The cake keeps well if stored in an airtight tin.

The Kings Head – West Sussex Pub of the Year
R
eaders may recall the article on The Kings Head in the April 2017 issue of Village Tweet ended thus: What makes The Kings Head special? Colin turns to a local supping his pint for an answer: “It’s the best in Billingshurst!” Well, as the Romans used to say, In vino veritas, meaning many a true word is spoken while indulging in a drink or two. Well, the pint-supping local would be delighted – though not surprised – to learn that The Kings Head has been voted West Sussex Pub of the Year for 2017! The West Sussex County Times invited readers to vote for their favourite pub. Out of 100 nominations The Kings Head made it through to the 10 pubs in the November final and scooped the award.
Voted
West Sussex Pub of the Year 2017
The presentation of the beautiful glass trophy and certificate took place in the pub on 30th January and Village Tweet was there to talk to the pub’s owners Colin and Oonagh Ganley. Colin thanked all his customers and locals “for their support and, of course, their votes.” He is also hugely appreciative of the pub’s hard working staff, especially managers Carole and Andrew Bussey (seen in the photo alongside Colin and Oonagh). Oonagh added, “We hope to keep moving forward in 2018 and continue to keep up the good work for our community. We have just been granted planning permission for new accommodation which we are very excited about. The village is very short on accommodation for visitors. Watch this space!” Grahame Pearson, Editor Village Tweet

Christs Hospital Choral Society – absolutely Magnificat!
C
hrist’s Hospital Choral Society would love to invite you to their concert on 18th March, where the choir will be sharing the stage with the school’s Chapel Choir, a professional Soprano, and full orchestral accompaniment to perform John Rutter’s Magnificat. Rutter wrote the piece relatively recently; its first performance was in 1990 at New York’s Carnegie Hall. This performance, however, will be at Christ’s Hospital Big School, much more convenient for most of us. Although not performed by Rutter himself, the school’s new and dynamic Musical Director Alex Hodgkinson is equally capable. In addition, Christ’s Hospital Choral Society enjoys the reputation of making a pretty good sound! The music varies from sweet melodious to cheeky
jazzy; there’s something for everyone. In addition, there will be a performance of Suite Antique, also by Rutter, and orchestral works by Elgar – a wonderful programme. Do come and join us for the concert on Sunday 18th March at Christ’s Hospital Big School, where the concert will start at 7pm. Prices £5 (child), £14 (Concession) £15 (full rate). To book your ticket please contact the box office on (01403) 247434 (mornings only), or speak to a choir member. You will have a lovely time! Don’t let your brain hijack your ability to be happy
O
ne upon a time many thousands of years ago our earliest ancestors lived as tribes in caves. They lived a simple existence that involved hunting and gathering, and supporting one another in order to survive. When problems occurred they were often life threatening, such as fierce animals, starvation, illness, death at the hands of a fellow tribe’s man or women. So their brains were wired to respond to these dangers in the following ways: Anxiety (heightening of the senses, increasing the heart beat, sweaty palms and often being physically sick) was the body’s way of enabling them to run faster than ever before to survive attack. Anger (increased physical strength) enabled them to fight the danger. Depression (suppressing the body’s responses, slowing everything down) enabled the body to wait until the danger had gone or to rest due to illness or lack of food. All three, which more often than not would occur at the same time or in quick succession depending upon the problem, would have most likely ensured their survival. What is interesting to recognise is that in our brains today we still have the same primitive response to
danger and problems. So while our intellectual mind has evolved and adapted to our modern way of life to enable us to drive cars, operate technology and all the things that our current way of living requires, the primitive survival instinct has not; and this is where we can find ourselves in difficulty. Problems today, thankfully, rarely cost us our lives but our brains still respond as if they will. Anxiety, Anger and Depression are our brains’ way of ensuring our survival from the problems that we face. Now the problems that our brains think we need help with can range from financial and relationship issues, through to worrying about exams and our unknown futures. So you can see why we can often find ourselves experiencing these things without consciously choosing to do so. Our brains think that we need their help when we often don’t! So how do we recognise when our primitive response is ‘helping’ us? If you are thinking negatively and struggling to move forwards you can be pretty sure that your primitive brain is active. Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k choose St Catherine’s Hospice
O
nce again St Catherine’s Hospice has been chosen as the official charity for the Barns Green Half Marathon & 10k which takes place on Sunday 30th September 2018. The Barns Green Half Marathon Committee was unanimous in their decision to continue to support the outstanding local charity which provides individualised, expert end-of-life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey. Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings said, “Those of us who have visited St Catherine’s Hospice know what a wonderful place it is with some very special people providing an essential service. This year our association with St Catherine’s is particularly poignant as we recently lost two dear friends from the village, Brian Muncer and Mike Awcock, who were very prominent figures in village life and who between them clocked up 56 years as senior marshals for our race. Both passed away just before Christmas and both benefited enormously from St Catherine’s support. We are therefore delighted to be extending our association with this great charity for another year.” The enormous success of last year’s Barns Green and 10k races combined with the great generosity of the runners resulted in a staggering £18,000 being raised for St Catherine’s. Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice said, “We’re so grateful to the
14
Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k committee for choosing us as their charity partner again. We rely very heavily on support and donations from our local community and each year need to raise more than £6.5 million in voluntary income so support like this is vital. Without it, we couldn’t deliver our expert care to local people when it’s needed most. We’re looking forward to another year of great races!” Last year over 2,200 runners registered for the Half Marathon, which is in its 36th year and almost 600 runners completed the 10k event which was only being staged for the second time. This year’s two race courses follow routes on closed roads, through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, and Christ’s Hospital where for the first time in four years the magnificent Christ’s Hospital School marching band will be playing while the runners go through the grounds of the school. What could be more uplifting for runners? Entries are already open for the September races, and hopefully the event will once again raise a lot of money for its chosen charity. For further details on how to take part in the 2018 race just visit the Barns Green Half Marathon website: barnsgreen-half.org.uk. What bugs you? John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by. Dear reader, is it my imagination or are we forever more pulling in two different directions on a whole variety of daily experiences? I’m not talking here of deep physiological events, but more of the practical things we encounter in everyday life. Silly things, annoying things, and very often, frustrating things. I’m referring at this particular moment to the constant variations on many of our favourite products that manufacturers seem determined to inflict upon us. We all know for instance about Wagon Wheels, Mars bars, Marathon and a whole multitude of similar confectionaries that have shrunk, or even had their names changed for no apparent reason other than for the manufacturers’ convenience or profit levels. When it’s pointed out that we have noticed the difference, we are then assured that its all done for our own good. So kind! Crisp packets have not only lost that little blue screw of paper… but quite a few crisps as well. Flavours that have become firmly embedded in our memories for countless years are suddenly altered without explanation and when we ask why, we are again persuaded it was for our own benefit. The list is as long as your memory. However, my friends, it’s not these that bring me to put pen to paper, it’s something that happened a few moons ago and it has irritated me far more than I suspect it should. There was a wonderful concoction that we, as a family, enjoyed at Christmas time. It was a cake. Not any old cake, but a special cake for Christmas. For many years it would appear on the shelves just prior to the festivities and we would eat it with relish over the holiday period.
20
Then, a certain Mrs Currie blew it. She informed the world that we shouldn’t eat eggs! They were not good for us. They were bad, nasty things! Now, a major ingredient of this particular cake just happened to be… eggs. In fact, I understand the very reason we only saw it at Christmas was because its egg content gave it a relatively short shelf-life for everyday sale. It was withdrawn. Many of you ladies may have realised I’m referring to that baker’s delight known as a Tunis cake. A rich, buttery cake covered in a layer of thick, hard, chocolate icing with a delicate colourful iced border and three marzipan fruits in its centre. I miss it! So, you can imagine my delight and pleasure when I again espied it on the shelves of the supermarkets. I bought one immediately and carried it home with great anticipation. I should have known. They’ve gone and ‘improved’ it. The rich, dense, cake has become a regular Madeira; the thick, hard chocolate icing is now much thinner and is soft. The lovely floral band, gone. As are the three marzipan fruits to be replaced by a simple decoration. Yet it’s still called a Tunis cake! NO IT’S NOT! There may be some true representations around but my heart is broken. Sob! Oh dear, I do sound a trifle old maidish, I know, but, I think with good reason. It’s the final nail in the coffin. The straw that breaks the camel’s back. Why do we have to have all these socalled improvements on things we hold dear. If manufacturers want to make a new product, call it something else, don’t alter what’s familiar and try to fool us. There! That’s my New Year rant over with. Bet you’ve got one or two that you could let go with too. So, go on… let rip. Feels great don’t it? John Nash

Firefighters Charity Car Wash
T
his month we welcome you to join us for our first charity car wash of the year. This will take place on Saturday 24th March from 10am-3pm. However clean or dirty your vehicle is we will have our scrubbing brushes at the ready! Fire stations across the country hold these events as we try and raise as much money as possible for our chosen charity: The Firefighters Charity. We will have teas and biscuits at the ready while we get to work! All we ask for is a donation, however big or small it will make a huge difference. These events rely heavily on the local community coming out to support the charity. If you don’t own a vehicle and want to pop in for a cuppa, then you are more than welcome to watch. scooters, we’ve had the lot! Come on down and surprise us! Fingers crossed the weather perks up a little bit, but the show must go on even in the sun, rain wind or snow! New recruit Andreas (introduced to Village Tweet readers last month) has settled in well and impressed the crew with his determination to learn different skills. We responded to over 30 calls in January which is a very busy spell for a retained station. This is great for new recruits to learn as every job is different. We hope to see as many of you as possible on the 24th March. Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station Photo: bring your car along to be washed – we promise we won’t cut the roof off it!

Book reviews / About the house
A Good Read March’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Island – Victoria Hislop It is books like this that remind you, in small ways, how fortunate we are to live in the 21st century when illnesses and diseases that were once considered a death sentence are now curable. One such disease is leprosy which provides the background for this debut novel. Very often associated with Biblical times, it may be shocking for people to learn that in Europe as recently as 1957, victims of this disease were sent into isolation. The last known leper colony in Europe was the island of Spinalonga off the coast of Crete. This is the island of the novel’s title. Alexis Fielding is a 25-year-old living in London who knows very little about her background other than the fact that her mother comes from Crete. For whatever reason her mother refuses to discuss her past. Frustrated by her silence, Alexis decides to take her own journey to her mother’s home village, Plaka, to discover the truth that her mother will not speak of. Through an old family friend, in the heat of the Cretan sun, Alexis learns of her family history. Of her great grandmother, Eleni, and her two daughters, Maria and Anna. More crucially she learns of the sad past of the
now deserted island, just 1km from Plaka. And how her family’s past is forever linked to this place where the shunned inhabitants tried to maintain some level of normalcy amidst their pain and isolation. In a culture where family is everything, how can a family continue when it is ripped apart? The Monster of Shiversands Cove – Emma Fischel Ah, a summer holiday by the beach! Hot days playing in the sand. Days full of digging and snorkelling. Sounds like bliss! At least it DID. Stan is fed up. For the last four years his family have holidayed with his best friend, Rory’s, family. And this year was supposed to be the same until Rory’s parents both got new jobs and moved away. Now he is stuck in a cottage by the sea with Magnus, his four-year-old brother who is insistent that he is going to spend the whole holiday searching for fairies. Of course, Stan knows that this is nonsense and that fairies don’t even exist. One night he decides he has had enough. Magnus will not stop talking about the fairy he caught and has called Harry. In a moment of anger, he agrees with Magnus that this may be a hot spot for fairies and elves, but that means it is also a hot spot for monsters! Magnus is terrified but of course he has no real need to be. Everyone knows that monsters aren’t real. Or are they? Creating the WOW effect

Family Run Local Retailer / Service Provider
Christopher Sullivan Some years ago I read a story that high street banks were charging us to withdraw our own money from their cashpoints. It got me thinking…
WATCH THIS SPACE Isn’t it strange how things turn around, Morals reversed or parked underground. Lessons and rules that were learnt as a child, Are at best now old-fashioned, at worst they’re reviled. Policemen are sacked for clipping an ear, While children who err are treated with fear. Teachers laid bare for daring to smack, Are spread across papers like sex maniacs When I was a kid, those who took drugs Were hippies with beads and faint-hearted thugs. And Coke, I recall, was fizzy and black, Not sniffed up a nose before Crackerjack. A man’s home, his castle upon England soil, With the right to repel those who came to despoil. But now the poor thief if he’s beaten when caught, Means, you get six months, he gets victim support. There’s hard working people who can’t find a job, Who are grilled and browbeaten to receive a few bob From a Government giving a luxury pass To unlawful entrants. No questions asked! Butch Cassidy, Sundance and the Hole-inthe Wall, Were a gang who robbed banks. They were bad one and all. Now banks have a hole-in-the-wall to save fuss, But it’s turned round again, ’cos they’re now robbing us!

Save Our Hut! Ifold Scout & Guide hut needs urgent repairs
M
any of you will know and recognise this building, located in Foxbridge Lane. It is the Ifold Scout and Guide hut. You may be aware that I have been a Cub & Scout leader at Ifold for the past 13 years, prior to that I was a Guide and an Explorer Scout. The hut is a much loved building and is used by many groups for weekly meetings, activity days, camps and much more. However, it requires updating so that children can continue to enjoy it and the activities we provide. Currently the roof needs attending to and we want to replace the old, broken shed with a new shed and covered area, which will allow outside activities to take place all year round. I will be running the Brighton Marathon on
the 15th April (wearing my scout scarf) to raise money for the Scout and Guide hut as it is a charity close to my heart. My aim is to raise as much money as possible to help fund the projects planned to update and improve the hut, so that children may continue to benefit and enjoy it for many years to come. It is also a huge personal challenge for me, as I hurt my knee over a year ago and this will be the completion of a year’s training to return to full fitness. We need to raise £500. Any support will be greatly appreciated, my crowd funding page is www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/alice-dore Thank you. Alice Dore

Neighbourhood Warden Scheme The Parish Council would like to thank all those residents and groups who let us have their views on plans to set up a Neighbourhood Warden scheme in Billingshurst. Although organised and employed by Horsham District Council, the Wardens will be tasked through a steering group including the Parish Council, and be based in the parish. Largely funded by the Parish Council for the first two years, the scheme won the support of Parish Councillors at their annual budget-setting meeting on 24th January, by 7 votes in favour and 4 against, with one abstention. The consultation itself resulted in 117 respondents in favour, 27 against and one undecided. This decision will mean that the portion a typical Band D Council Tax payer will pay to the Parish Council will increase from £67.72 to £86.04 from 1st April 2018 (27.06%). This follows a reduction in 2017-2018 of 11.62%.
Billingshurst Community Speedwatch – An Update The Speedwatch group recently held a very productive meeting. Billingshurst Parish Council and Horsham District Council has committed funding to the scheme and a number of roadside locations have been agreed and approved by Sussex Police. The Parish Council frequently receives complaints from local residents about speeding, so please support the group of committed and dedicated volunteers by giving them a thumbs up if you see them! For more info, visit www.communityspeedwatch.co.uk .
Bird Nesting Season Did you know that wild birds are protected by law? This is particularly important during the bird nesting season which typically lasts from early spring until late July. Hedge cutting, vegetation clearance and tree work activities can have a devastating effect on the nesting sites of wild birds. If you intend to carry out works at your property, please be mindful that birds may be nesting. If you require further advice as to what is and isn’t permitted during this time, please read the Wildlife & Countryside Act or contact the RSPB for advice.
A29 – Garage meeting in March Proposals to develop a new petrol filling station on land adjacent to Newbridge Road and the A29 in Billingshurst will be presented to Parish Councillors on Wednesday 7 March at 7pm at the Billingshurst Centre. Consultants appointed by developers have conducted initial door to door surveying of local residents close to the site and are keen to share this feedback with the Parish Council, and receive any comments and questions Councillors may have. Residents are also encouraged to come along and listen and to have their say.
Billingshurst Community Transport Do you have some spare time? Are you able to drive? Do you live in the parishes of Billingshurst, Shipley, Loxwood, Ifold or Plaistow? If so, the Billingshurst Community Transport Scheme urgently needs more volunteer drivers. To find out more about the scheme and see whether you can help, please contact Gill on 01403 787696.

Billingshurst in Bloom 2018 Following the success of Station Road Gardens in last year’s South & South East in Bloom competition, where it scooped a Silver Gilt upon entering for the first time, the Parish Council has decided to not only enter the Gardens in the competition again this year but also the village itself. Councillors felt that the High Street looked so nice last year with the sponsored planters and so many businesses making an effort with baskets and troughs, that it too was worthy of entering the prestigious competition. They hope to rekindle past glories when the village regularly bagged In Bloom and Best Kept Village awards. In an effort to encourage community involvement to help support the entry, the Council is holding a local competition, in which it is hoped residents and businesses will be keen to get involved, by entering their garden, tubs and baskets. To enter, please fill in the form below and return to the Parish Office by 30th June. Judging will take place in July, with awards to be presented in September. (You can enter no more than three categories, and all displays must be visible from the street.) Each entry will be judged on Impact, Care & Attention and Horticultural Content. However, you don’t need to be Monty Don to enter, so if you enjoy pottering and it looks good, please have a go! By the way, we are still trying to track down trophies from previous In Bloom competitions, so if you know where they are, please drop us a line. Broadford Bridge Exploratory drilling site
I
n September, West Sussex County Council approved an extension of a year to their planning permission for UKOG to carry out work at Broadford Bridge. In January WSCC approved an application by Cuadrilla for the company to flow test their well at Balcombe for 2 years. In December, UK Oil and Gas announced to their investors that a section of the reservoir at its Broadford Bridge oil well in West Sussex is ‘unproductive’ because of low permeability. In their statement to shareholders, the company also said it was seeking two new sites in the
middle of the Broadford Bridge licence area and expected to submit a planning application in spring 2018. UKOG has experienced problems with the Broadford Bridge well since the summer. In July, it confirmed it had drilled a side-track well, BB-1z, after a section of the original borehole washed out. There were later cement bond problems with the side-track. So, while UKOG may be set to finish at the Broadford Bridge site they are not planning on leaving Sussex. Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair, KKWG. Tel: (01403) 700395
What a Treasure! Boxal Bridge granted Listed Building Status
W
e are delighted to be able to give you some fantastic news and advise that Boxal Bridge has been granted Grade II Listed Building consent by Historic England. The bridge is therefore classed as being of national importance in terms of architectual or historic interest and to be proteted for future generations to use and enjoy. We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all of those who, over the past few years, have helped to reach this momentous decision. So many people, in various ways, have been involved helping with advice, the petition, Council meetings, Boxal Bridge rally, landowners, Bedham Commoners, sending objection letters to raise the awareness and to all of you we send our heartfelt sincere thanks. The bridge obviously has great affection in our hearts as over 3,000 people signed the petition to save this bridge from demolition. It means that three of the four bridges surrounding our parishes now have listed building status. Historic England guidance for Transport Buildings notes that most pre-1840 bridges, where
34
substantially intact, will warrant serious consideration for listing. This is a key part of this regional network of bridges which were improved during the 18th and 19th century to provide a reliable infrastructure. This listing will give strength to the challenges we have been fighting, as it means that listed building consent MUST be applied for in order to make any changes to the bridge which might affect its special interest. We hope the council will now spend the time and money repairing and maintaining the bridge, as we have always accepted that the bridge does need some TLC but NOT a replacement. We also hope that the council will address the problems to the road surfaces on both sides of the bridge with the increasing number of dangerous potholes! KKWG is a group committed to this cause and your support means a lot to us – Thank you. Keep Kirdford and Wisborough Green. www.facebook.com/nodrillingsussex. Dr Jill Sutcliffe, Chair, KKWG. First aid for pets
I
t’s something that all pet owners dread: their pets hurting themselves but unfortunately accidents and injuries do happen so it’s best to be prepared for any eventuality. Knowing what to do could save your pet’s life. Make up a basic first aid kit with the following items: notebook and pen, a clean towel, scissors, thermometer, self-adhesive bandages, surgical tape, sterile dressings, a clean syringe for flushing wounds and a card with the vet’s phone number. When to call the vet in an emergency. Sometimes pets need veterinary care outside of normal surgery hours. You should call your vet immediately if your pet is displaying any of the following symptoms, the vet will advise you on whether or not to bring your pet to the surgery, your pet is weak, unable to stand dull or depressed. Difficulty in breathing or breathing is noisy, rapid accompanied by frequent coughing. Severe vomiting or diarrhoea. Your pet appears in severe pain or discomfort. Sudden issues with balance. If you are in any way worried about your pet call your vet who will be happy to advise you, don’t leave things to chance. Road accidents involving dogs and cats are sadly very common. Firstly ensure your own safety especially around moving vehicles. Calmly assess the animal and call the vet. Be aware that even the calmest pet will be in pain and frightened so may be likely to bite, either muzzle the animal if possible or place a towel over the animals head. If the animal is able to walk take him straight to the vet even if there is no visible injury as there is a possibility of internal injury. If the animal is unable to walk either gently pick him up or in the case of a large dog improvise a stretcher using a coat or blanket to transport him to the vet. Poisoning is another common occurrence. Pets can be inquisitive and eat or chew rodent poisons and household chemicals. If you suspect poisoning call your vet immediately and take the label of the suspected poison with you (or a phone photo of it) as this will help the vet determine the best course of treatment. Snake bites are a possibility in some areas again this means an emergency vet visit keeping the animal as calm as possible. Bee stings can be dealt with by first aid

providing the mouth is not involved, pull the sting out if possible and bathe with cold water, keep a close eye on the pet until the swelling subsides. Bleeding. Place a tight bandage over the wound. If blood starts soaking through apply another bandage on top of the first. Take the animal straight to the vet. If the cut is on a leg bandage the foot as well so circulation is not affected, don’t apply a tourniquet unless absolutely necessary. For cuts that are hard to bandage use a pad or improvise with a clean towel and apply pressure on the wound. Swollen stomach in dogs. If this happens suddenly, treat it seriously, especially if the dog is a deepchested breed such as a boxer or mastiff. There may also be gulping, dribbling of saliva and attempts to vomit. It could mean there is a lifethreatening twist in the stomach. Phone the vet immediately – do not delay. Heatstroke in dogs. If on a warm or hot day your dog is panting heavily and is distressed, and especially if the dog is short nosed (e.g. a boxer), overweight or has been playing or exercising, think heatstroke! Put the dog somewhere cool, preferably in a draught. Wet his coat with tepid water (cold water contracts the blood vessels in the skin and slows heat loss) and phone the vet. You can offer a small amount of water. It goes without saying, never leave a dog in a car on a warm day, the temperature in a car can rise very rapidly and dogs can easily die of heatstroke. Fight wounds. Injuries sustained in fights are very common in cats, puncture wounds can be quite nasty especially if sustained around the head and neck. Wash any wounds thoroughly with saline solution and contact your vet for a course of antibiotics within 24 hours. Fits. These can be very frightening for owners. Do not try to restrain your pet but if possible darken the area as this will reduce stimulation and move any objects away that may injure your pet. Call your vet if your pet has not had a fit before. Hopefully you will not need to use this advice and your pet will have remain happy and healthy. Jeannette Douglas, SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.com

Another Panto success for Barns Green Players Sherlock Holmes, January 2018
B
arns Green players has just finished performing the annual pantomime which this year was Sherlock Holmes. There were six shows performed over the last two weekends in January. The two Saturday Matinee performances were completely sold out as was the final Saturday evening performance and, overall over 90% of the seats for the performances were sold. Commenting on the success, Barns Green Players’ Chairman, Neale Francis said, “Our annual pantomime is very important to us, and each year we try new and ambitious ideas to deliver an even better show and we certainly achieved that this year. “Our Director, Graeme Muncer did a wonderful job, the cast were superb and the backstage crew did an amazing job. It gets harder each year to improve on the shows but we will certainly do our best and the planning process for next year will
start very soon. Village Tweet Editor, Grahame Pearson came along to see the show this year and commented, “I had not been to a Barns Green Players panto before and half expected the usual “He’s behind you!” panto experience of my childhood. All I can say is my expectations could not have been further from the truth. This was a panto for all the family with plenty of adult jokes too. “But what really impressed was the sheer professionalism of the production. I kid you not, this was a West End quality performance, with fine acting and absolutely brilliant singing. But all this would be for nothing without a top drawer script but this too was absolutely perfect. Don’t miss next years’ panto, I certainly shan’t.” NIgel Currie Photo: (left to right) Professor Moriarty (Neale Francis), Harry Holmes (Lucy Walker), Sherlock Holmes (Graeme Muncer) and Dr Watson (Ian Pinnock)

Fertilizer!
T
his month the days get longer and the sun gets stronger… we hope! However, March is famously temperamental and if the soil where you are is still wet and cold then it’s wise to delay planting and sowing until the temperature rises. Plant nutrient reserves are low at this time of year so, as the soil warms up, it’s time to think about fertilizer. Many gardeners are a bit frightened of fertilizer. All those chemical symbols on the side of the packet are rather reminiscent of school chemistry lessons. In fact the basics are quite simple. NPK. This can be observed on the side of most fertiliser packages. The letters stand for: N - Nitrogen P - Phosphorous K - Potassium Together these are known as the macronutrients and each of them has its own use. Nitrogen primarily feeds the leafy above-theground parts of the plants. Phosphorous promotes strong roots. Potassium makes grass hardier, promotes germination and improves vegetable and fruit yields. The proportions of each macro-nutrient will be

printed on the packet. Equal amounts of each nutrient make for a good general purpose fertilizer. A lawn will need a good balance of nitrogen and phosphorus to guarantee lush green grass with a healthy root system capable of withstanding dry spells. Fruiting plants need higher proportions of potassium. There are other macro-nutrients: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, which plants obtain freely from the air and water; and calcium, magnesium and sulphur, which should be present in any good general purpose fertilizer. Plants also need micro-nutrients: iron, manganese, zinc, boron and molybdenum. Plants take all these nutrients and build everything they need from scratch, including vitamins. What plants cannot do is absorb vitamins directly from things such as pet food, milk or so-called fertilizers which contain vitamins, proteins and fats. So don’t be intimidated by fertiliser. Decide what your plants need then read the label. It’s easy as ABC… or rather NPK! Rachel Leverton

The unsung heroine in our midst
E
very community has their unsung heroes and Billingshurst is no exception. But recently the incredible work and effects of one lady (affectionately known as Mrs Billingshurst by some) was recognised by the West Sussex County Times with the presentation of their prestigious 2017 Achievement Award. And the award went to none other than our very own Sandy Duck. A woman of substance There is no denying Sandy is a force to be with reckoned with. Having only moved to Billingshurst in 2006, Sandy immediately threw herself wholeheartedly into community life with a passion and enthusiasm we’ve since come to know well. Among the many roles she has had over the years, she is currently secretary and treasurer of the Billingshurst and Horsham Chamber of Commerce, treasurer of the Billingshurst Scouts and the Scouts and Guides and Youth Officer for the Rotary Club. Bringing the community together As Youth Officer she helps organise the Youth Speaks, Young Photographer, Young Chef and Young Writer annual competitions but she also spends time with our more mature residents, helping to run the Monday Lunch Club (rustling up lunch and resources from local businesses). Sandy has even travelled to Sumatra to see some of the work with children there which is supported by the Rotary Club and she’s also a member of the Parochial Church Committee supporting the work they do within the community. A prolific organiser At Christmas, you’ll find Sandy knee deep in tinsel as she helps organise BilliFest and in the summer, she’s right there, working on the
Billingshurst Show and Carnival. A familiar face In fact, the chances are that if you live or run a business in Billingshurst, whether you’re young or older, your life will almost undoubtedly have been touched in some way by Sandy. She doesn’t seek glory or the limelight but is always to be found quietly and determinedly working behind the scenes: connecting businesses, reminding, encouraging, organising, carrying out admin and bringing people together. It’s the sort of work that rarely gets praised but is pivotal in keeping most organisations running. Always happy to help Widowed at 32 with two small children to bring up, when you meet Sandy you don’t always see the sheer strength, determination and courage that lies behind her smile. And smile she does, despite what must be the very considerable weight of much of the town’s admin on her shoulders. On top of everything, Sandy is a supportive mother and grandmother who hasn’t lost sight of the need for the personal touch. When she’s not wading through admin, you’ll still find her driving neighbours to hospital appointments and just keeping in touch with the more vulnerable members of our community. Thank you, Sandy And if you ask her what drives and motivates this huge force for good, she humbly and simply replies, “I do it because it’s lovely to help people and I like to bring different parts of the community together.” There’s a glint and the hint of a plan in Sandy’s eye as she speaks, and you get the feeling, she’s not done with us yet. And thank goodness for that. Lucy Pitts, www.stroodcopy.com Photo: Alan Wright www.alanwrightphotography.co.uk

Our Community Volunteers – Sandy Duck
T
hey say that if you want something done, ask a busy person. The organisations of Billingshurst seem to have taken this to heart in the case of Sandy Duck, whose roles include running Billifest and the Seniors’ Lunch Club in conjunction with the Community Partnership, acting as Treasurer of both 1st Billingshurst Scouts and Billingshurst Scouts and Guides including work on the Billingshurst Show and Gangshow, running the Youth Programme for Billingshurst and District Rotary Club, Secretary and Treasurer of the local Chamber of Commerce and a member of St Mary’s Parochial Church Council… and she can even be found dressed as an elf in Santa’s Grotto at Newbridge Nurseries with her Rotarian hat (and ears?) on. She confesses to a bad habit of always trying to squeeze a few more things in and running a little late as a result, but presumably this is met with great understanding under the circumstances. Sandy moved to Billingshurst in 2006 from Essex when she retired, in order to be closer to her family, and shortly afterwards visited a Horsham exhibition for seniors. One look at the rather limited attractions made her decide that she would much prefer to be ‘on the other side of the desk’ and she immediately
offered herself as a volunteer with the Community Partnership, and has never looked back. During her career, her work – for Woolwich Building Society and later Barclays – encompassed many areas including her favourite, customer services, where she thrived on solving people’s problems and helping to shape company policy through feedback. When I asked her how she fits everything in, she says that when she was widowed at a young age she learned to fill every minute of the day in order not to dwell on her situation, and so that she could be in contact with lots of other people; “I couldn’t function without people,” she concedes, particularly those she works with in the many organisations, who have helped her and encouraged her over the years. Sandy has recently been awarded the West Sussex County Times Community Achievement Award (see previous page. Ed), which is undoubtedly well deserved, but admits that her biggest fear is waking up and wondering what to do with the day. Probably not an imminent problem… Pippa Cleeve If you know someone who you feel deserves recognition in Our Community Volunteers please email Pippa: pppclv@spektrum.demon.co.uk
