The area’s longest-established, independent family firm

This month Fowlers would like to introduce you to their excellent Lettings Department. Fowlers lettings are based in the very busy Billingshurst office and this thriving department is headed by Jonathan Evans. They look after properties from Storrington all the way through to Billingshurst and the outlying villages including Wisborough Green, Loxwood and Ifold. Jonathan’s experience in the lettings field is immense. For many years he has lived and worked in the local area and has built a very strong reputation for honest accurate advice. The care and attention that is given to both landlords and tenants alike is a credit to him and mirrors the ethos of Fowlers as a local independent company. Jonathan commented “I am proud to be part of the Fowlers family. I would urge anyone considering letting their property to contact me with any queries they may have. I pride myself on the knowledge I have gained, and will assure all tenants and landlords of the very best service with accurate advice”. Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k once again choose St Catherine’s Hospice

O

nce again St Catherine’s Hospice has been chosen as the official charity for the Barns Green Half Marathon & 10k race taking place on Sunday 29th September 2019. The Barns Green Half Marathon Committee was unanimous in their decision to continue to support this outstanding local charity which provides individualised, expert end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey. Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings said, “We are delighted to be able to support this outstanding charity once again. Those of us who have visited St Catherine’s Hospice know what a wonderful place it is with some very special people providing an essential service. “Over the last few years we have built up a close relationship with the charity and several individuals and their families in the village have benefited from the great work that they do. We are therefore very pleased to be extending our association with this great charity for another year.” The enormous success of last year’s Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k races combined with the great generosity of the runners resulted in just over £19,000 being raised for St Catherine’s.

Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice said, “We have built up a very good relationship with the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k committee and we are thrilled that they are continuing to support us this year. We rely very heavily on support and donations from our local community and each year need to raise more than £7.5 million in voluntary income so support like this is vital. Without it, we couldn’t deliver our expert care to local people when it's needed most”. Last year over 2,000 runners registered for the Half Marathon, which is in its 37th year and the 10k event which is now in its 4th year. This year’s two race courses follow routes on closed roads, through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, and Christ’s Hospital. Entries are already open for the September races, and hopefully the event will once again raise a lot of money for its chosen charity. For further details on how to take part in the 2019 race just visit the Barns Green Half Marathon website: barnsgreen-half.org.uk. Nigel Currie Barns Green Half Marathon Committee Photo: Pauline Muncer (left), whose husband Brian was heavily involved with the Barns Green Half Marathon. Brian died late in 2017 and he and his family benefited hugely from the support that they received from St Catherine’s Hospice. Food and drink

Spinach and Ricotta Lasagne

Enjoy this creamy meatfree version of this classic METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6. Heat the oil in a medium pan, then fry the onion for 6-8 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and fry for a further minute. Pour in the red wine, turn up the heat and simmer for 3-4 minutes to reduce the liquid by half. Add the tomatoes, sugar, Worcester sauce and tomato purée. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes until thickened. Add the basil, and season well. 2. Place the spinach in a large pan with a knob of butter. Cover and cook over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes until the spinach has wilted. It will seem to almost disappear! Drain the cooked spinach in a colander and press to squeeze out any excess water. Roughly chop, then mix with the rest of the creamy sauce ingredients. Taste and season well. 3. Spread a little of the spinach and ricotta sauce over the base of the baking dish, then cover with slightly overlapping lasagne sheets. Pour over a third of the remaining white sauce, sprinkle over a little of the grated cheese and top with half the tomato sauce. Cover with another layer of lasagne sheets, top with half the remaining white sauce, then all the remaining tomato sauce. Add the final layer of lasagne sheets, then spread with the rest of the white sauce. Scatter with the remaining grated cheese. 4. Top with mozzarella slices and the grated Parmesan and bake for 30 minutes until golden and bubbling.

A fantastic first year at CC’S Emporium

T

he month of March sees the first anniversary of our fledgling business CC’s Emporium! It’s been a exciting adventure, not always easy, but always fun and rewarding. We offer local craftspeople the opportunity to sell their goods without the expense of rent and overheads by renting them a space in our shop located in Jengers Mead, Billingshurst. We have such talented people to work with, that we are now struggling to find enough space for everyone. Their skills provide us with a massively diverse range of items from handmade baby clothes to wonderful scented candles or bath salts made from locally sourced ingredients. You can buy a one-off piece of jewellery or a unique clock made from an original ‘45’ for those young enough to remember. In fact, we probably have something for any occasion along with a handmade card to go with it. What has surprised us too, are our loyal and supportive customers who have helped us become an integral part of the village. People not only join

us to learn a new craft or language, but to play Scrabble or partake in our Book Club. We recently held a session for Dementia Friends which was really well supported and also host a Help Group for parents with struggling teenagers once a month. We are always open to new suggestions for activities and have recently starting hosting craft-based birthday parties. The young people who have attended have thoroughly enjoyed making something special to take away while eating home made pizza! Why don’t you pop in and see us next time you are passing – we offer a warm welcome and are happy to help with selecting that perfect present. If you are interested in any of our sessions you can either like us on Facebook where all the events are listed or send your email address to: ccsemporium@gmail.com so we can add you to our mailing list for regular update. We never share any information with third parties. Susan and Cate

A Good Read March’s selection from book reviewers Willow Coby and Bridget Cordy Our House – Louise Candlish For all of us our homes are the one place we feel safe. It is one of our human rights that no one can enter our home without due cause. For those of us who own our homes then they are also a financial investment and an investment for our children once we are gone. So, what if you came home one day to find a removal van outside your home. And someone else was moving in. This is what happens to Fi Lawson one sunny winter day in January. There are no signs of her two young sons and her husband, Bram, just a family of strangers insisting that the £1.6 million house in a leafy suburb of London is now theirs. And so Fi’s life quickly unravels. This dual narrative novel tells the events leading up to that day from the point of view of both Fi and Bram, switching between their two accounts. At times this can lead to confusion as you forget that you know information from Bram that Fi doesn’t, but it is not a big issue. Has Bram cheated Fi out of her home and disappeared from the face of the earth? If he has why? This fast-paced thriller will have you guessing until the end, with twists and revelations throughout and asks if we ever really know what the closest people in our lives are going through?

The Ghosteleers – Philip Beicken The Ghosteleers is a fun, fast-paced adventure for young readers looking for crazy antics, mysterious baddies and seemingly impossible challenges. To ramp up the intrigue, the engaging storyline is all set against a backdrop of different dimensions. This is the first book from local West Sussex author Philip Beicken and features the bungling Norman, and his extremely clever cat, Morph. After Norman accidentally blows up both himself and Morph, they awake to find themselves in a strange new afterlife. The two are invited by Sir Poop to join the Ghosteleers, a band of gifted crime fighters with telekinetic powers. Together Norman and Morph battle baddies and protect humans by using their new-found ghostly skills. Their adventures take them around the world and it’s often Morph who saves the day. Increasingly high stakes result in an epic battle between good and evil which takes some surprising twists. The pace never slows and although things often go wrong, they usually – though not always – turn out right. This is a thoroughly entertaining read with plenty of laughs along the way to keep young readers eager to turn the page. Highly recommended for all children aged 7-12. The author will be signing copies of The Ghosteleers in Waterstones, Horsham on 9th March. The book is available on Amazon and Goodreads. £6.99. Ed TO

Missing: the wartime account of two brothers A new book from a local first time author

A

book about two brothers from Manning’s Heath has just been launched. Missing, written by David James Parker, it concerns the stories of Harry and William Warman. Harry was in the Royal Air Force, flying Bristol Blenheim bombers from the outbreak of the Second World War. A pre-war airman, having joined the RAF in 1936, he was flying operations over the North Sea on antishipping patrols, he took part in the Norway campaign, flying from Lossiemouth and finally operating over France and the Low Countries, covering the retreat to Dunkirk. Harry was shot down and killed on 27th May 1940. William was a regular soldier, having joined the Royal Artillery in 1930. After serving in Hong Kong and Aden he was posted to Singapore in 1939 but captured when the island fell on 15th February 1942. After a few months in prison camps on the island he was a member of a party of prisoners taken to Ballale as forced labour. With the Allies closing in and their work finished the Japanese killed the remainder of the prisoners, some having been killed in air raids and some dying of disease. David has also mentions other people who were involved in this story, the brothers’ cousin Harry Jones being one of these. Jones was

Horsham’s first casualty in the Second World War. The author has researched this over a number of years meeting up with people that knew the brothers along with a number of family members. Not only is this a war story, it is very much a human story. David is a chimney sweep working around the Horsham area. This is his first venture into writing, apart from a few magazine articles. He has been interested in history from a young age. His interest was fuelled by the history teachers at Forest Boys School. David’s interest in these two brothers stems from being given Harry’s RAF mess tunic by Miss May Oakey, former teacher at Lower Beeding who had adopted Harry in the 1920’s. Fifteen years later he ended up with Harry’s medals and a discharge certificate which gave him the key to start unlocking the story. David is also becoming known for giving talks about the First World War, Second World War Home Front and his life as a sweep. (He has a talk scheduled for 16th April – see next month’s What’s On pages. Ed.) Published by Redshank Books this can be ordered online from Libri Publishing at www.libripublishing.co.uk. Also available from local book shops, Horsham Museum and Amazon at £9.99

It’s always a fantastically uplifting night, and we can’t wait to see thousands of people hitting the streets of Horsham to support their local hospice.” Last year, over 1,100 people walked through Horsham, lighting up the town with a brilliant orange glow. This year, St Catherine’s is hoping even more of you will join them and make your steps count for your local hospice. Maureen, whose daughter-in-law, Nicola, was cared for by St Catherine’s, has taken part in several of our Midnight Walks. She said, “We had so much fun on the walk. When I crossed the finish line for the first time and then each year after, I just felt proud that I’d done it and quite elated; the feeling with everybody at the end cheering you on and congratulating you, it was a very poignant moment

for me. I would encourage others to take part in the Midnight Walk because doing something like that to raise money for such a wonderful organisation is very important. It’s not a competition or race, just come along and have a go, there’s no winners or losers – we’re all winners because we all take part in the event.” St Catherine’s can currently only reach 1 in 3 local terminally ill people, and their families, when they need them most. With the support of people like you, they can be there for everyone when life comes full circle. Louise Brown, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said, “Last year was our biggest ever Midnight Walk, and this year we’re hoping lots of you will join us to help us beat our target again! The Midnight Walk is always a really special evening, and together we can go the extra mile to ensure that no one has to face death and loss alone.” It doesn’t matter whether you’re walking individually or as a group, for the first time or for the tenth time, as a personal challenge or in memory of someone. It just matters that you walk. Let’s go further – sign up now Ready to join this inspiring night? Sign up online at www.stch.org.uk/midnightwalk or call St Catherine’s Events Team on (01293) 447355. Make sure you sign up by 5pm on Sunday 21st April to receive a special early bird entry rate of £10. After this date, it’ll cost £15 to take part. All entry fees include a free T-shirt, finisher’s breakfast and medal. Sarah Tuhey, St Catherine’s Hospice Photo: One of over 1000 in last year’s Midnight Walk

The Beautiful Game: A History of Football in Horsham District Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, open now until 30th March

F

ootball is the most popular sport in the world in terms of both the number of players and spectators. A total of 44.5 million people tuned in to watch the BBC’s television coverage of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Internationally an average of 815 million watched the group stages of this year’s competition. The most widelyplayed version of the sport is Association football which has evolved from earlier ball games. A form of football has been played in Great Britain since the Middle Ages, and games that involve kicking a ball have existed for millennia. The Greeks, Romans and Han dynasty Chinese all played ball games that involved kicking, passing between players and scoring points. Horsham has had a football team since 1871, the year that the Football Association introduced its Challenge Cup. On 23rd February 1871 the West Sussex Gazette reported that Horsham’s first football club had been founded and now played in Springfield Park. The Horsham and District Football Association was founded in 1895, ‘for the purpose of providing players for the Horsham FC’ and the early minute books record the following clubs as members of the Horsham and District Football Association; Horsham FC, YMCA FC, Shelley United FC, Carfax FC, Bishopric Wanderers FC, Roffey FC, Warnham FC, Working Mens FC, Billingshurst FC, Handcross FC, and Southwater FC. clubs who cater for all age groups, genders, backgrounds and abilities. They range from workplace teams, women’s teams, disability football teams, walking football teams, children’s teams and leagues, through to large clubs with a major following. Each group and club has its own history, complete with its own unique characters, successes and stories. It would be impossible to outline a complete and detailed history of every club to have operated in Horsham District, but Horsham Museum’s exhibition, The Beautiful Game: A History of Football in Horsham District hopes to explore some of the stories that have contributed to Horsham District’s rich footballing tradition. The Museum has received a fantastic response from local clubs and individuals, and is lucky enough to be displaying a wide range of objects including shirts, trophies, archival material, photos, clippings, artworks and footage that have kindly been lent to us for the duration of the exhibition. The Beautiful Game: A History of Football in Horsham District runs until 30th March. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm. Admission Free. Billingshurst Parish Council Billingshurst Community & Conference Centre Roman Way, Billingshurst, RH14 9QW

Have you ever thought about becoming a Parish Councillor? The current Council’s four-year term ends in May 2019; if there are more than 15 candidates, an election will be held. If there are 15 or fewer, then the candidates will be considered to be duly elected, albeit unopposed! Being a Parish Councillor is a great way to give something back to your community, to help have a say on its future and to represent the views of local people. Meetings of the Council are held every other month, although there are various smaller Committees and Working Parties you can join depending on what particular interests you have, that deal with more detailed business. Although an unpaid role, the Council encourages Councillors to go on a variety of training courses to help them in their role, which the Council funds. If you would like to

find out more, the Parish Council will be having a stand at the Billingshurst Showcase event at the Billingshurst Centre on Saturday 23rd March 1.30-4.30pm. Councillors and Officers will be on hand to answer all your questions. If you can’t attend, then please contact the Clerk or any of the existing Councillors for an informal chat about what the role entails. If you decide to stand in May, you will need to contact Electoral Services at Horsham District Council to find out about the necessary forms to complete and deadlines.

About the house

Get sowing and ex-seed your expectations with Austen’s Home Hardware, Billingshurst

G

ardening doesn’t have to be rocket science – unless, of course, you specialise in cultivating new varieties of the popular peppery salad leaf. In which case a degree in horticulture might come in handy! But, for the rest of us, whether we only have a window box, a few patio tubs or a modest back garden, we can all delight in the feeling of satisfaction that comes from creating a splash of seasonal colour or harvesting our very own fresh, home-grown vegetable and salad crops. An affordable and rewarding method by far is to cultivate our own plants – from seed. And it’s not that hard to do. If you can remember growing cress on soggy paper towels, or broad beans on cotton wool pads in jam jars when you were at school, you already know that pretty much all it took was a bit of warmth, a few hours of daylight and some moisture. Mother Nature handled the rest! At Austen’s Home Hardware Billingshurst we stock a wide range of gardening products for the propagation of seeds. From absolute beginners to seasoned gardeners we cater for everything you need to sow, grow and tend to your flowers and vegetables right across the seasons. Planning what to sow and when can sometimes feel a bit daunting. Thankfully there’s no shortage of information available in books, gardening magazines and, of course on-line, where you’ll quickly discover that a huge variety of flowers – from Ageratums to Zinnias – can be sown around now (February/March), as well as vegetable including beans, carrots and tomatoes, and herbs such as dill, lemon grass and oregano.

As a beginner you’ll almost certainly need a propagator. Think of this as a mini-greenhouse comprising a shallow seed tray with a ventilated transparent lid. Propagators come in a variety of styles and sizes with many designed to fit conveniently on a southerlyfacing window sill where the seedlings can be exposed to maximum daylight and the gentle warmth of winter sun. Propagators create a micro-climate conducive to germination and development of the seedlings until they are ready to be potted on. Heated conservatories and enclosed balconies are also great environments for raising seedlings too – although you’ll still need a propagator. Once the seedlings have germinated and reached a manageable size you are going to need growing-on pots, flower pots, pot trays and, of course, plant labels. These are not expensive items, but they are all essential. The friendly, knowledgeable people at Austen's Home Hardware can help you chose exactly what you need depending on the size and type of plants you’re growing, and also recommend the right seedling and potting compost for nourishing your growing plants. Doing right by your seedlings is vital at this stage since it will determine how well they develop and ultimately how proliferously they flower or fruit. There’s no doubt that seeing your garden ablaze with colour or harvesting fresh vegetables and salads all nurtured from seed, is well worth the small additional effort involved. With so many different varieties that can be started from seed at all times of the year don’t think of this just as a springtime activity. There’s always something for the aspiring gardener to sow and grow. David Lobley

Brangwyn in Horsham Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, open now until 23rd March

J

ust before the outbreak of First World War Frank Brangwyn, one of the leading up and coming artists of the day, came to Horsham, Christ’s Hospital to be precise, and started work on a masterpiece… Following on from the mediaeval tradition, he was commissioned to paint murals to adorn the newly built school chapel walls. Brangwyn in Horsham, the stunning new temporary exhibition at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, marks his arrival in the town by showcasing three of the cartoons he created for the Chapel and puts them into context with other work by this renowned artist. The exhibition at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is part of the District’s Year of Culture. It will show for the first time, outside the School, three stunning drawings of the designs for the Chapel walls. It was from these drawings – or cartoons as they are known – and others held by the school, that Brangwyn transferred the images on to the walls to create highly colourful masterpieces. The exhibition, using drawings lent by Christ’s Hospital Museum, will also give other examples of his mural work including drawings produced for the Rockefeller Centre in New York some 20 years later in 1933-4. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery will also display two recently acquired cartoon drawings for designs commissioned by the House of Lords in 1924. British Empire Panels were designed to mark the end of World War One and were considered a prestigious commission to adorn The House of Lords. Frank Brangwyn had by then been elected a Royal Academician in 1919 and held the post of an Official War Artist. Horsham Museum has two of the preparatory drawings, which are full of vigour and

drama. Unfortunately, the House of Lords decided the murals were not right for them, but Swansea, who were then building a new Guildhall, took the murals where they are today seen as one of the art treasures of Wales. Along with various designs for murals, Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is delighted to also be able to display a selection of ceramics designed by Sir Frank Brangwyn, lent by family descendent David Brangwyn. These will complement paintings and etchings produced by the prolific artist to create an interesting, colourful and unusual exhibition on one of the giants of 20th century art in Britain. Brangwyn in Horsham is an ideal introduction in to the work of Sir Frank Brangwyn RA, an artist who created an outstanding work of art in Horsham and one that is rightly being celebrated in the Year of Culture. The exhibition also gives a taste of what can be seen in the major exhibition on Brangwyn at Christ’s Hospital Museum, from 23rd April, where seven of the magnificent cartoons will be on display as well as the murals themselves in the Chapel. The exhibition would not have been possible without the support and help of the Christ’s Hospital Museum and Toovey’s Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers who have sponsored this stunning exhibition.   Brangwyn in Horsham, featuring Christ’s Hospital cartoons, runs until 23rd March at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, open MondaySaturday 10am-5pm. Admission Free. For more information see www.horshammuseum.org. Scholarships for Exceptional Weald Students

T

he Weald School and Sixth Form College recently introduced scholarships for our exceptional students. The main objectives for the scholarships were for businesses in the local community to engage and build a profile with Weald Sixth Form students, parents and staff; to provide the funds for additional learning in order to achieve the best outcomes for post-16 study and beyond, and to ensure that no Weald Sixth Form student is deprived of any opportunity to prepare themselves for life, regardless of background. Some of the ways students may choose to use the funds from a scholarship: •  Additional resources to supplement learning •  Visits to universities for super-curricular courses •  Educational research away from home Six Year 12 students were nominated for the scholarships: Tom Eady, Dom Sayers, Riya Daffu, Sophie Belle Carnell, Rebecca Tanner and Hannah Ashby.

Well done to all students who were nominated and huge congratulations to Tom and Dom who were chosen as winners of the scholarships, sponsored by Billingshurst Rotary Club and Billingshurst Lions Club. They will be sponsored £750 per annum to support their studies and opportunities beyond the classroom. The college holds all funds and the students will write a bid for any money they wish to withdraw. We wish Tom and Dom the best of luck with their studies. Thank you to all who were involved in initiating the scholarship programme. Izzy Lewis Events & Communications Manager Photo (left): Billingshurst Lion Andrew Vial with student Thomas Eady. Cooking… how hard can it be? John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

t was a sad fact that for centuries it was generally the ladies who we turned to for our meals, yet the chefs who were praised and glorified down through the years were nearly all men. Thanks to television, it’s the ladies we now equally recognise as the creators of fine cuisine. From the formidable Fannie Craddock, the practical Delia, the delightfully fragrant Mary Berry… and not to forget the steamy Nigella, we have followed their efforts as they battle valiantly to improve our own culinary skills. I must confess, though, that it’s only in the last few years that any of their practical knowledge has leaked through to my own efforts. I do now manage to produce the odd edible meal without making too much of a burnt offering. Yes, there does seem to be an excess of saucepans and other utensils used, but by and large the debris is not that bad. However, that’s not what has happened in past times! I feel it’s my duty to add to the recipes that have been handed down through the generations by including a few of mine that I have produced over the years as my own learning curve has straightened out… It was back when I left college and living in digs (on a chicken farm) that my first true effort at the culinary arts commenced. I had a sweet tooth and thought that I desperately needed to make a change from my usual snack of Kraft cheese slices, grilled lightly on toast, which in its turn was adorned with a generous smear of jam and Marmite. Jamie Oliver, eat your heart out! So, for my first attempt I tried to bake a treacle tart. There’s an art to baking this you know. I didn’t know. First and foremost is that you have to bake the pastry case ‘blind’. (No, I didn’t know what that meant either!) I rolled out the pastry that I’d carefully made (no ready made in those days) and with great delicacy lined a tin with it. Then, with treacle liberally spooned onto the base the whole lot was placed into the oven. With no actual knowledge of oven temperatures at that point in my kitchen skills, I don’t recall what the setting was, but I suspect it was hot. While it baked I tried my best to clear up the spilt flour from the table and a fair amount off the floor, and scraped away most of the sticky dough that

34

generously coated my hands and fingernails. I think it had been made to roughly the same formula that is nowadays used to make superglue. Once my nose told me that it was near enough ready I removed it from the oven and with my mouth watering at the prospect I inspected the result. While my back was turned someone had stolen the treacle! There was no sign of it. A careful poke about with a fork revealed that it had sunk through the pastry which, by the way, had turned a delicate shade of dark mahogany, and was now caramelised and very firmly welded to the base of the tin. There was no salvage possible and it was into the bin with both tart and tin as they had become inseparable. It was back to the Kraft cheese slices. You would think I’d learn wouldn’t you. But I didn’t! Quite a few years later (it had taken me that long to get over the shock of the treacle episode) I had another bash at baking. This time I moved onto cakes. My target was a plate of doughnuts and a few of a particular favourite of mine: Chelsea buns. I confess I cheated. I bought two packets of ready mixed ingredients. ‘You can’t go wrong’, it proclaimed on the side of the boxes. They lied. Somehow the intervening years had not brought me any further skills in the art. The Chelseas were just about edible if your teeth were in good condition but, alas, even the ducks refused the doughnuts and they had to be thrown on the muck heap where I suspect they have by now fossilised so that some finder in the far future can puzzle over what the devil they could be. Lessons have at last been learnt though. Now I can usually get ingredients to marry and the final plate can even be consumed with a touch of enjoyment. The fry-up is my forté though. Us men are good at fry-ups! My personal secret hint lads: get the frying pan so hot that the eggs are cooked the minute they hit the pan, ditto the bacon. I admit it’s inclined to set the smoke alarm off as her indoors gropes her way to the back door to let the fug escape, and it can produce a generous splatter of oil and fat around the cooker and surrounding tiles, but it’s quick, the eggs are by and large fairly edible, and the bacon is crispy. Really, really crispy! So, men. If you haven’t been in the kitchen lately, have a go. You might well find you have the hidden talents of an Escoffier, or at least a Gordon Ramsay – even if only in the language department. That is… if you’re allowed! John Nash

Pets / About the house

Dealing with food intolerances

J

ust as we ourselves are becoming more aware of how our food affects our bodies, we are also becoming enlightened about similar issues in our pets. In the course of my work I hear from many owners who say their pet is allergic to certain ingredients in pet food and are looking for an alternative ‘Hypoallergenic’ food. So what is the difference between an allergy and an intolerance? The terms are often used interchangeably and many people think they are the same. An allergy is an immune response from the pet’s body, often triggered by a protein. An intolerance is an abnormal reaction to an ingredient but does not involve the immune system. The symptoms of both can be very similar. Allergy tests can only detect food reactions which involve the immune system so the only true way to determine an adverse food reaction is by feeding an elimination diet. It goes without saying that if you have any concerns about your pet’s health then a veterinarian should be consulted, but there are plenty of ways owners can help their pet too. Some breeds of dog also seem to be very prone to dietary intolerances, West Highland white terriers, Cocker spaniels and German shepherds seem to be particularly prone to these issues. The most common ingredients that cause allergies and intolerances are beef, dairy products, wheat and a common one I come across at work: chicken. Adverse food reactions in pets often show up with digestive sensitivities or skin problems, but there can be other explanations including itchy skin being caused by parasites such as fleas. Signs to look out for that could point to an allergy/intolerance are vomiting, itchy red skin, often in the groin area and on the belly, recurrent ear infections, loss of hair and scaly skin, soft or loose stools. Your vet can perform allergy tests and may refer difficult cases to a specialist dermatologist. There is much that you as

As I have said before, understanding pet food labelling can be a minefield as some manufactures are still using terms such as ‘cereals and cereal derivatives’ and ‘meat derivatives’ – as an owner you have no clue as to exactly which meat protein is in fact in the food. Thankfully there are companies that are much more honest about what is in their food and list the products in descending order by weight and list each ingredient as a percentage too. Be careful to read beyond the eye-catching label, for example one leading brand has a label saying ‘with salmon’ when in fact there is only 7% salmon and the rest is chicken – not much good if your pet is intolerant to chicken and you believe you are feeding salmon! With an elimination diet you would be looking to eliminate certain foods or proteins for 6-8 weeks and then reintroduce one ingredient at a time and see if there is a reaction. It is recommended to feed a novel protein and carbohydrate source, i.e. one that isn’t a common ingredient that the pet has been exposed to. You could use pork or duck if your pet has always been used to chicken for instance and use potato as a carbohydrate source instead of wheat. You can choose to home prepare an elimination diet or you can buy a commercially available food but do double-check the ingredients list. Grain-free pet foods are gaining popularity with people wanting to feed a hypoallergenic diet. Treats, supplements, dental chews, rawhide and even some medications all have ingredients that your pet could react to. When trying to avoid certain ingredients in the main diet you will need to look at the composition of these items too. Jeannette Douglas, SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.com

Mother’s Day / About the house

Mother’s Day Musings

M

arch 31st is Mothers’ Day and I wonder if I’m the only mum who finds it irritating? I mean, I love flowers and chocolates as much as anyone, but I value them more when they come ‘just because’, rather than because Clinton Cards emailed a prompt. And don’t get me started on primary schools and their ‘Mother’s Day mornings’. Rearranging my working day so my child won’t be disappointed by my absence is stress I don’t need… I thought Mother’s Day was supposed to be about me! No, Mother’s Day feels phoney. My husband is a hands-on dad, who knows how to cook and wield a vacuum cleaner; but if I didn’t remind him about Mother’s Day he’d forget, and so would the kids, because he wouldn’t remind them. Last year I didn’t remind, they forgot, then they all felt bad, which wasn’t my aim, because I didn’t care. So, we had a chat. I told them I knew they loved me, and Mother’s Day wasn’t

important to me, but perhaps each of them could pick a time when they did something little and nice for me, when I least expected it, and tell me it was for Mother’s Day. I don’t think I expected much to happen, other than to free them (and me) from social pressure, but a few weeks later my 12year-old left a dark chocolate Bounty bar on my desk one evening (food of the Gods and difficult to find!), with a little Post-it note that read ‘For Mother’s Day because I know it’s your favourite’; and a few weeks after that my nine-year-old drew me the most beautiful picture of a dragon because he knows I like dragons. Somehow those gifts felt more real than any I’d received before. I’ve not mentioned it again this year. Maybe they’ll remember, maybe they won’t. Maybe I’ll get another dark chocolate Bounty… I won’t complain. Kath McLean

Wey & Arun Canal Trust brings in heavyweights

I

t was definitely ‘lift-off’ for the Wey & Arun Canal’s latest restoration project in early February when it took delivery of a some new boats, including a 19tonne dredger. The heavyweight vessel, plus two barges and a tugboat, had been purchased from local firm Land & Water Services Ltd, and called for the use of a 250-tonne crane to lift the fleet from land and into the canal at Compasses Bridge, on the canal Summit at Alfold/ Dunsfold on the West Sussex/Surrey border. Civil and environmental engineering experts Land & Water transported the fleet by lorry to the Compasses site from as far afield as Birmingham, along with the crane and 70 tonnes of counterweights. It was an impressive sight as the tower crane’s boom was extended to 34 metres to lift the boats over the bridge and into the water, with the diesel-powered tugboat the first to set sail. It was put to use immediately to push the two 12-metre barges further along the canal as soon as they reached the water. The heavyweight dredger was the last to be lifted safely in.

Wey & Arun Canal Trust volunteers and Restoration Supervisor Supervisor Dave Evans worked with Land & Water staff for the operation, and to ensure the safety of the many spectators who had turned out on a bitter Saturday morning to witness the spectacle. Land & Water director Richard Maclean handed the keys of the dredger to Summit Project Manager Tony Ford and Dave Evans. Its arrival was then honoured in the traditional way by pouring Champagne on its bow and was toasted by supporters. The equipment will now allow the start of a two-year volunteer-led project to desilt the 500-metre stretch from the newly-built Thriscutt Slipway to Compasses Bridge. Find out more about the Wey & Arun Canal Did you know that Zachariah Keppel, a builder from Alfold, went bankrupt trying to construct the Wey & Arun Canal in 1813? Or that the canal was in part built by French prisoners of war? Local groups and organisations can find out more fascinating facts about the Wey & Arun Canal, its history and restoration by booking a talk from the knowledgeable team at the Wey & Arun Canal Trust. Trust speakers can provide presentations on every aspect of the canal, covering all interests and age groups. Previous bookings have ranged from gardening clubs and wine groups to Scouts and Cubs. John Dodwell, volunteer speakers organiser, said, “Our speakers are experts in the history of the waterway that runs from Shalford in Surrey to Pallingham in West Sussex. We bring to life the story of how the canal came to be; the characters behind its construction and those who pioneered its restoration. “The story continues today and we can give an insight into the current restoration. Back in 1813 navvies came from all over the country to build the canal and navvies still volunteer today to bring the canal back to its former glory.” There are still spaces left on this year’s programme. There is no fixed charge for a speaker, but a £60 donation is asked for to support the Trust’s restoration work. To book a talk email talks@ weyandarun.co.uk or go to https:// weyarun.org.uk/content/request-speaker.

Hardy Annuals

H

ardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t. In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-togrow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annual-novice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried-egg plants (limnanthes), love-in-the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers. If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottagegarden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded. The king of the hardy annuals though has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two

seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they’ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant. If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Oldfashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it. Next time you’re at the garden centre walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot… and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year. Happy gardening! Rachel Leverton

Dash Cams The latest ‘must have’ motoring accessory

T

he dashboard camera, or dash cam, has become increasingly popular recently. So, should you think about buying one? A dash cam is a special camera that is mounted on a car dashboard for the purpose of recording sounds and images while you're driving. But why might you want one? First-hand evidence in case of a car accident. This is the main reason why people invest in one. If you are involved in a collision you can prove that it was not your fault by submitting the camera footage as evidence. It's a compelling reason for buying one. Reporting a dangerous driver. Sometimes you see a driver do something so reckless and irresponsible right in front of you that you fear for the safety of other road-users. Reporting that person becomes much easier with evidence. In the US there are special channels for reporting dangerous drivers, with the aim of making roads safer for everyone. It is probable that the UK will follow suit. Extra insurance for parents. We worry when our teens first start to borrow the car that they may not stick to the rules of the road. Knowing that there is a dash cam monitoring their driving behaviour is an extra incentive for them to pay attention, or they might not be trusted to take the car out again! Prevention of insurance claim scams. Insurance fraud is a growing problem with vehicles. Some drivers purposely cause minor car accidents in order to put the blame on the

other party, so they can extort money from the victim. The victim has no way of proving their innocence, so these people also fake injuries in order to collect the insurance money from their insurance companies. A dash cam will at least allow you to prove that you were not at fault in such a case. It keeps an eye on your car while you are not in it! Have you ever returned to your car in a car park to find it's been scratched? Or are you sure the neighbour's children are scraping their bikes along the side of your vehicle when they squeeze past on the drive? A wellinstalled dash camera can efficiently record such events because most can be set to record even when the car engine isn't running. Some can even send all the data to your laptop or smart phone remotely, giving you peace of mind. Because the best camera is the one you have with you. It's not all about the car! Check out online videos of dash cams capturing unexpected phenomena. A family of ducks stopping traffic in Birmingham, a plane crashing right in front of a guy driving down a highway, and one Russian car driver’s dash camera recorded an enormous meteor that flew over Russia. The clip ended up being viewed millions of times on YouTube! Dash cams are set to become as necessary an addition to our driving life as sat-navs. If you don't already have one, perhaps you should think about it. Tom Hancock

F

ollowing the success of the Piazza Italia District Tours in 2016 and 2017, something extra special is being planned for the Year of Culture in 2019. The District Showcase Tour, on Sunday 24th March, will see around 40 of the best vehicles representing the five main motor-based events in Horsham, tour the market towns. The cars will then continue the tour, stopping at Pulborough (11.40am-12.25pm); Storrington (lunch stop, 12.40-1.45pm); Steyning (2-2.45pm) and Henfield 3-3.45pm). The tour will finish at Leonardslee Gardens, which

48

will have a variety of activities running all day, closing with an afternoon tea for the drivers. Horsham District Council is working collaboratively with our colleagues across the towns including the Parish Councils, Community Partnerships, local businesses (Premier GT and Pilgrim Motorsports) and enthusiast groups including SADCASE (Storrington and District Classic and Sports Car Enthusiasts) and Oddballs, to make the tour the biggest, boldest, brightest and most fun ever. The organisers are massively grateful to SERV Sussex who will be guiding the Tour en route, Christ’s Hospital School and Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens. As we go to press Tour Sponsors are to be confirmed. More information on the timings and route of the tour will be posted on www.hdculture2019.co.uk. Our Community Volunteers – Mike Charman

I

f you want to find out more about the work of Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex, Mike Charman is your man. Based in Worthing, he travels around the county giving talks to raise awareness of this life-saving charity. The Air Ambulance operates three helicopters from their base in Redhill, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and they are able to reach any point in the region within 25 minutes. Responding to over 2,000 calls a year; the Trust receives no public funding and so needs to raise in excess of £11 million a year to continue this vital service. It would be reasonable to expect that Mike has either a medical or flying background or hobbies, but in fact, after 27 years in the army (starting at the tender age of 15 and rising through the ranks to become a major), it has been cricket that has filled the last thirty years of his life. This includes a five-year stint as Team Scorer for Sussex Cricket and his current roles as Treasurer for Sussex Martlets and West Chiltington and Thakeham Cricket Clubs. He has also been very much involved with The Ramblers, stepping down as the

Chairman of Sussex Ramblers in 2010, just before he became involved with Air Ambulance. About half his volunteering hours are spent giving talks, and the rest are filled by maintaining a network of collection boxes in shops and public buildings, doing street collections and giving administrative support to the charity’s headquarters in Rochester. He is delighted that he has personally collected over £18,000 from local points during his time with Air Ambulance. He says that he had very little experience of public speaking before he took on the role. During his time with Sussex Cricket he had to make the public address announcements, but had to write everything down before speaking, but now he relishes the opportunity to meet different groups and to speak to them.
