ay is that time of year when one thinks of Maypole dancing. Or is it? When I was at primary school back in the ’sixties the Maypole was dusted off every year. However, talking to some children today it seems that many have never even heard of a Maypole. Thankfully, in our community the tradition is not dead yet. There is a Maypole Fête in Plaistow on 7th May (see page 41) while on page 40 you can read John Nash’s account of Maypole dancing past and present written in his usual inimitable style. Lamb Keema

A light and healthy supper with a taste of India

Prep time: 15 min, Cooking time: 30 mins, Serves 4-6

METHOD

1. Dry fry handfuls of minced lamb for about 4-5 minutes until browned. Drain off any fat. 2. Add the ground spices and fry for another minute. 3. Add the chopped onion, red pepper and green beans. Stir-fry for a few moments then add the mushrooms, chickpeas, tomatoes, stock and garlic pickle, if using. 4. Bring to the boil, then cover and cook gently for about 25 minutes, stirring from time to time. Remove the lid for the final ten minutes of cooking to reduce the liquid. The keema should not be allowed to boil dry though. 5. Prepare the salad by mixing together the cucumber, tomatoes, onion and fresh coriander. Season with salt and pepper then chill until ready to serve. 6. Check the seasoning of the keema and add salt and pepper to taste. Stir through the fresh, chopped coriander. 7. Serve with the salad, chapattis or rice and plain yoghurt.

INGREDIENTS

For the Keema 350g / 12oz lean minced lamb 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 large onion, chopped 1 red pepper, deseeded and chopped 115g / 4oz fine green beans, chopped into 2cm pieces 175g / 6oz mushrooms, sliced 400g / 14oz can of chickpeas, drained 400g / 14oz can chopped tomatoes 90ml lamb stock (a stock cube works fine) 2 level tbsp garlic pickle (optional) Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2-3 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped For the salad ¼ cucumber, chopped finely 3 tomatoes, deseeded and chopped finely ½ red onion, finely chopped 2-3 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped

Faces of Billingshurst – Michelle Websdale

All made in Billingshurst, her customers can request a bespoke design or choose from her extensive range of products. All the cards are handmade and have some fantastic details. It all started when Michelle was looking for wedding invitations. She had a particular design in mind and the companies she approached either couldn’t deliver what she wanted or were charging too much. Rather than compromise she decided to make her own. A Good Read May’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett The Complete Sherlock Holmes – Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Right now, it seems, you can’t get away from Sherlock Holmes. Guy Ritchie’s hugely successful film franchise and the critically acclaimed BBC TV series have brought the familiar duo of Holmes and Watson to a whole new audience. So, what is it that makes the character so timeless? The best way to find out is to go back to the source, and read the original stories. Although the Holmes canon consists of four short novels and five collections of short stories, all published separately, these days they are commonly collected together into one ‘complete’ volume. Considering their age, the stories are remarkably accessible, partially because of Conan Doyle’s inspired choice of Dr Watson as narrator. The plain speaking doctor acts as a perfect foil for the eccentric, mercurial detective and allows us to see just enough to attempt to second guess what is going on. Regular supporting characters such as Holmes’ brother Mycroft, Inspector Lestrade and of course, Moriarty, are deftly drawn too. What’s more, each case is told clearly and concisely. The short story is an underrated form, but perfectly suited to 21st century reading – an adventure such as Silver Blaze or The Speckled Band is compact enough to be read on a train journey, at bedtime, while having a coffee, but is still a satisfying puzzle. Even the novels are relatively short, but always well paced, allowing the character of Holmes to be developed in more detail and more twists and turns to be added. A welcome addition to any collection – and don’t be surprised if you find yourself reading the Complete Sherlock Holmes in one fell swoop.

To Kill A Mockingbird – Harper Lee Is this a children’s book? Well, it is a book about being a child, and is told from a child’s perspective. And, if read at the right time, it is a book which can fundamentally alter a young person’s views on life. Given that it is frequently taught at GCSE, I would argue that it is a book every young person should read – perhaps preferably before they are taught it, so that they can allow the sheer power of Lee’s storytelling to carry them on. Simply put, it is the story of Scout and Jem Finch, their father Atticus and the town of Maycomb, where they live. Scout tells us about her life in 1930s small-town America, as she, Jem and their friend Dill stretch the boundaries of their summers with imagination. At first, the most exciting and dangerous thing they can think of is making Boo Radley, their mysterious neighbour, come out of his house. However, when Atticus is called upon to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman, Scout suddenly finds herself dealing with grown up issues and prejudices. There are a number of striking ‘set pieces’ within the novel – the fire that destroys a neighbour’s house, Atticus shooting a mad dog, Jem and Mrs Dubose’s camellias – but none more affecting than the courtroom scenes, seen through Scout’s eyes. One reviewer stated that ‘No-one ever forgets this book’ and I would agree. No-one ever forgets it, and every reader is a better person for reading and understanding it: one of the few really, truly life-changing books there are.

Tissue Salts What are they and what are they for?

hen you feel in need of a boost, following a long illness or a bout of flu; when nails and hair are in poor condition or you’re suffering aches and pains, many of us reach for multi-vitamins or mineral supplements, unaware that tissue salts (sometimes called mineral or cell salts) might be more helpful. The tiny homeopathically -prepared pills are considered by many to be a better way of dealing with mineral deficiencies than regular supplements. They are certainly cheaper! They balance the mineral levels in our cells, whether skin, bone, nerve, muscle or brain cells, which are then more able to absorb nutrients from our food. f you follow the latest fashion for the handcrafted – clothes, toys, throws, cushions, gifts, etc you have most likely admired a beautiful hand-knit sweater, scarf or a cute knitted toy? And then wished you could produce something like it? Well you can! Historically knitting was a necessity to produce clothing – and done by MEN too! During World War Two we ‘Knitted for Victory’. ‘Make do and mend’ was the title of a booklet produced by the British Ministry of Information. Wool was in very short supply, and the booklet encouraged women to unpick old woollen items in order to re-use the wool. Knitting patterns were issued so that people could make items for the Army and Navy to wear in winter, such as balaclavas and gloves. This not only produced much-needed items, but also gave those on the ‘home front’ a positive sense of contributing to the war effort. Celebrities including Julia Roberts, Winona Ryder, Dakota Fanning, and Cameron Diaz have been seen knitting and have helped to popularise the revival of the craft. The new millennium has also seen a return by men to the art of knitting. In 1999, Debbie Stoller started a Stitch ’n’ Bitch group in New York’s East Village ad Stitch ’n’ Bitch: The Knitters Handbook, published in 2003, was the first in a series of best-selling instructional books on knitting and crochet, all titled with the phrase ‘Stitch ’n’ Bitch’, that has been used to refer to social knitting groups since at least World War Two. With organisations like Stitch ’n’ Bitch and Ravelry (a large international online community and social networking site for knitters and crocheters, founded by Casey and Jessica Forbes in May 2007.), knitting was brought into the cyber present. Since machine-made knitwear is readily and cheaply available, today it’s a hobby. For those of us who want something truly unique, making it yourself is the only way. There is a wide range of fibres readily available, producing a startling array of textures and effects, only limited by our imaginations. You can even knit on a budget by recycling yarn and buying charity shop finds of yarn, equipment and patterns. The profile of knitting has been raised in the ‘noughties’ with yarn bombing, yarn storming, guerrilla

knitting, urban knitting or graffiti knitting, a type of graffiti or street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk. Examples have been recorded as early as May 2004 in Den Helder, Netherlands. In 2005, Texas knitters used their leftover and unfinished knitting projects, but it has since spread worldwide with custom pieces being created by artists. While yarn installations – called yarn bombs or yarn storms – may last for years, they are considered nonpermanent, and, unlike graffiti, can be easily removed if necessary. Nonetheless, the practice is still technically illegal, though it is not often prosecuted vigorously. While other forms of graffiti may be expressive, decorative, territorial, socio-political commentary, advertising or vandalism, yarn bombing was initially almost exclusively about reclaiming and personalising sterile or cold public places. It has since developed with groups graffiti knitting and crocheting worldwide, each with their own agendas and public graffiti knitting projects being run. World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 by Danielle Landes and takes place on the second Saturday of June each year. It began as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other’s company. But we got tired of waiting, so you can come down to The Six Bells, in Billingshurst High Street, on a Tuesday evening, between 7pm and 9pm and join us at the ‘Stitch ’n’ Bitch’ or ‘Knit & Natter’ if you prefer. We are a small group of crafting type folks who meet to indulge, discuss, inspire and craft. There’s no charge, no register, no pressure. You can bring any type of crafty project, come when you want and stay as long as is convenient. You can buy a drink if you wish and it doesn’t have to be alcoholic, tea and coffee are also available. We welcome everybody, of any age or ability, who would like to learn, or just wants to chat about needlecrafts and would love to meet knitters, crocheters, etc of any standard. To Sow or Buy…

hat is the question! In addition to the traditional method of sowing seeds, garden centres, DIY stores and even supermarkets are now providing more options for people looking to grow their own vegetables from young plants, but I’m not sure how I feel about this. In one respect I’m excited about the movement, and think that it’s a great step forward; mainly because it introduces vegetable growing to a wider audience and it takes away the scary ‘unknown science’ of germination. Now you and I know that with most veg, seed sowing does not have to be any more scientific than making a line in the soil with a stick and throwing in a few seeds. Cover them over, slosh on some water and hey presto, as if by magic they germinate (it’s no surprise really as that’s what they were designed to do!). Planting young vegetable plants is also very easy. There’s no thinning out of the seedlings if you over sow, it’s much less time consuming (the whole veg plot could, in theory, be planted up in one go) and it’s great for children (and impatient adults) who like an ‘instant impact’. It also removes the need to spend ages choosing from the bewildering array of varieties on offer, as normally there’s just one type available (although seasoned gardeners will see this as a major disadvantage!). There are other downsides too, and I think the main one has to be the fact that you don’t get the thrill and satisfaction of that special day

when you go outside and observe the seedlings poking through the soil. Having checked daily since the week after you sowed them (as I do!), you get a real sense of achievement when the fresh new leaves emerge from the crusty seed coat. The other major downside is cost, and some young plants do actually work out more expensive than buying the end product from the supermarket, but I guess there’s not much fun in that! Either way, I don’t think it really matters. Whether you’re a time starved parent or have several hours to spare sowing neat rows, there’s nothing quite like eating home grown peas, popping them fresh from the pod. Diamond Jubilee Garden for Loxwood

uring the early part of the year, the Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative have been extremely busy in creating a Diamond Jubilee Garden for the Loxwood residents. This garden is situated on what was an overgrown, neglected piece of land between Station Road and Willetts Way. We have just completed Phase One of this garden, which measures approximately one quarter of an acre in size. This work has included a semicircular sleeper wall which has created a backdrop

who have been very generous towards us by supplying their goods at a very competitive rate. They are Covers Builders Merchants at Rudgwick and AVS Fencing Supplies at Rudgwick. Without their help we would not have been able to complete this project. Phase Two will start once we have raised sufficient funds and have got our plans in place. However, we would love to find somebody who would be in a position to donate a totem pole for this area.

The whole area has been fenced off with a post and rail fence with access through one entrance gate to ensure the area will be safe for young children. The funds for this have been generated by the members of the Loxwood Community Gardens Initiative as well as a grant that we acquired from the Big Lottery Fund. We have again been very fortunate to find a local landscaping company, Paul Swan Landscaping Ltd, who has very kindly donated his time and expertise at a very reasonable cost to help with this project. Paul and his team have produced a fantastic example of their workmanship. As well as Paul, we would like to thank two local companies

Musical talent at this year’s Loxwood Beer & Music Festival

here wil be a fabulous line-up of musical talent at this year’s Loxwood Beer & Music Festival in the grounds of Loxwood North Hall on Saturday 26th May, 2-11pm. As well as local bands there will also be an incredible array of beers, a hog roast and barbecue plus entertainment for the kids too, with proceeds going to the Loxwood Pre-School. The event is sponsored this year by Silverback Studios (www.silverbackstudios.co.uk) and JGH Plant Services (www.jghplantservices.com). Ray Merridew and Mark Bridger from Bigger Fish Music have organised all the bands. The festival will open with Voodoo Rising, an entertaining rock covers band with the vocal talents of Rachel Middle and Louise Crawford. They have a superb varied repertoire with anything from the Blues Brothers to Nickelback or Chuck Berry to U2, so are guaranteed to go down a storm. They will be followed by the hugely talented Aimée and friends. At just 16, Aimée will captivate you with a contrasting set of selfpenned songs alongside some well-known classic and contemporary tracks. Just after 4pm we are in for a real treat with The Watermelons who play Loxwood in amongst several festival dates. In 2011 their single ‘Dancing with the Wrong One’ achieved over 30,000 views within a week and rated number 4 in the MTV download charts. Worthing-based Indie heroes Sandweaver will follow with their dramatic mix of melodic, anthemic sounds. Formed in 2010 but already filling local venues, University gigs and playing at private parties you will soon see why! Parallel lives Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …

ill was sitting in the sun reading a book. He was feeling very sad and cross. He’d hurt his back doing a hedging job and it was still very sore. Sally came in from checking the sheep and Bill asked if there was a cup of coffee going. “I’ll get it in a minute,” Sally replied. “I’m making you a sandwich now.” Just as she was finishing, Beth arrived and Sally put the kettle on again. Soon they were all sitting in the watery sun chatting about life and enjoying a cup of coffee. In the Sheep Nursery, The Welsh Witch sniffed her two new baby ewes that had been born in the early dawn that morning. She was very pleased that they were so strong and healthy. Sally and Bill had brought them up and had checked the babies out, and given The Welsh Witch some lovely new food. She really liked being in the Nursery. It was warm and cosy and there was lots of food, twice a day. Dottie the big pig gazed at her not so little piglets running around and jumping about over one another. Some were even scoffing food out of her food bowl, but she didn’t mind too much. She loved them anyway. Dottie lay down beside the ark and enjoyed the sun. Spring couldn’t be too far away. Hens Goldie and Brownie eyed the smaller birds which were trying to thieve their food in the chicken yard. The sun was warm and they’d been scratching about in the dirt. There were a few worms about and other tasty bits and pieces. They did not miss Ashley and Misty but Blackie was all right and Harriet of course was to be respected and allowed to do what she wanted. (Author’s note: You haven’t met Harriet yet. Hers is another tale.) Life was good and they were all content. As the days were drawing out they became more inclined to lay eggs. Jack was in the big house doing the washing. There were always at least two loads and it had to be done every day. Although it wasn’t the most exciting task in the world he took pride in doing it regularly and carefully. Anne was in London working hard. The kids were all at school. Gary was inside working on his computer. And the dogs? Magnus was snoozing on the couch flat on his back with all four feet sticking up in the air.

His paws twitched every so often as if he was trying to run. Bailey was sleeping too, curled up on her blanket but with one eye open. She was watching her Mum who was washing dishes and looking out the window. She was dreaming about the jobs she wanted to do in the garden that day and wondering if the sun would stay out long enough for it to be enjoyable. Suddenly a life and death drama caught Mum’s eye. Jasper the little cat was stretching his paw down the edge of the open drain under the downpipe on the shed. He’d caught a rodent of some kind which had escaped down the drain. He couldn’t reach it. He tried one way and then another, with one paw and then another. He stopped and looked, sat for a bit then tried again. He went as far around as he could and tried putting his paw down again. Mum went outside and moved the downpipe to see if she could see; but it wasn’t visible. She replaced the downpipe and went back inside to make lunch. When she next looked out Jasper had called in reinforcements in the form of the Master Hunter, James Edward. He was trying to hook the rodent out with his much longer paws. He tried and tried. Then he settled back to wait. Jasper of course settled down too but showed his respect by remaining farther back. Half an hour passed and there was no more movement from the drain. Jasper went off to look somewhere else, but James Edward stayed a bit longer. Eventually he too left and came into the house for his lunch. After munching his crunchies, he went back outside and checked the drain again. He stayed for awhile watching and sniffing. The farm settled down for the afternoon, quiet until Sally started the feeding round again and the children came home from school. Just an hour or two in the lives of those who live at the little farm near Billingshurst. Yvonne Fleece

Tommy Tippetts – youngest male solo ocean rower

ommy Tippetts of Kirdford has become the youngest man to row any ocean solo after arriving into Port St Charles, Barbados on the morning of Thursday 12th April. After spending just over 82 days at sea on the Atlantic Ocean, Tommy stepped off his 24ft rowing boat KED Endeavour to be greeted by family and friends. After leaving La Gomera, Canary Islands on Saturday January 21st 2012, Tommy had to deal with many issues whilst at sea (as reported in Village Tweet, October 2011 and March 2012). During his first few weeks he was forced to contend with 30ft waves and strong winds, very aware that similar conditions had capsized five other ocean rowing boats in the weeks before his departure. The weather then turned and for his final six weeks at sea Tommy had unusually light winds which meant ten hours of back-breaking rowing every day in temperatures reaching 36°C. The problems continued when Tommy’s electric water maker, the most important piece of equipment on the boat that turns salt water into fresh drinking water, broke down. From then on Tommy was forced to use his emergency manual water maker and pump for two hours every day to make enough drinking water to survive. The final hurdle Tommy faced was a shortage of food on board, caused by the lack of wind and slow progress he was making. Forced to cut down to less than half the 6000 calories he required each day for the final two weeks, Tommy became more and more exhausted as his

body’s reserves became increasingly depleted. Arriving into the island, Tommy became the youngest male at 22 years old to row any ocean. 22 is also the age of the youngest ever ocean rower, Katie Spotz of the USA. This crossing was Tommy’s second attempt at an ocean row after being forced to retire from the 2011 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge after only five days in December 2011 due to issues relating to the boat. This meant that for the whole trip there was no on water support for Tommy. Tommy was rowing the Atlantic in aid of the charity Mind. Tommy is now spending some time in Barbados to rest and recuperate before returning to the UK next week. ’m amazed at how many people are unaware of the various ‘cashback’ sites that are present on the Internet. One which I’ve just started using is Top CashBack (www.topcashback.co.uk), a site which takes only a couple of minutes to sign up to before you can start earning money on purchases that you would most likely be making anyway. Top Cashback has no set up or membership fees and the idea essentially is that if you visit one of their sponsors via the site then you’ll actually get a cash reward paid straight in to your account. There are hundreds of big name featured retailers including Play.com, Tesco, Asda, B&Q and Dell and along with the usual couple of per cent back you occasionally come across an offer which is ridiculously generous. As an example I recently signed up for a new iPhone on the 3 network and got £110 cashback. The service works as retailers pay the cashback site to be featured with the intention that they can then accumulate more customers by also offering them rewards to buy their products. Finding the perfect livery yard

inding your perfect livery yard can be as hard as finding the perfect horse! Keeping your horse at home is the dream of most horse owners, but it is not always possible and this is where livery yards come in. There are many options to suit all pockets and all have advantages and disadvantages. I will try to cover the most popular types of livery. Full livery. This is the most expensive option. All of the horse’s needs are met by the yard staff, including exercise if needed. The price will include feed, bedding, hay, mucking out, turning out and bringing in. Make sure you know exactly what is included in the weekly fee as some services such as holding for the vet or farrier and tack cleaning will attract an extra charge, and you will be expected to provide any feed supplements the horse has as well as wormers and money for dentist visits and shoes or foot trimming. Full livery tends to be popular with horse owners who work long hours or odd shift patterns as it means the horse is cared for and in a routine if the owner cannot be around. Part-livery. Similar to full but not as comprehensive. Most part-livery includes, turn out, skip out, feed and bedding, but the grooming and riding is down to the owner. DIY. Do it yourself! The most popular livery option by far. The horse owner rents a stable and grazing and the all the stable work is down to them! DIY yards vary greatly in regards to facilities, with some having the luxury of an indoor school and some being just a stable and field. Some DIY yards offer holiday and illness cover too. Grass livery. This is the most basic livery option by far; the owner simply rents a field from a local farmer. The advantage is that it is a very cheap option but I would recommend that you have the use of a stable for emergencies. This option is a good deal for young stock or retirees. Do take into account that paddock maintenance and muck removal will be ultimately down to you. Make sure you can rely on someone in the event of holidays or illness as with this livery you will be going it alone! Once you have decided on which option is right for you and your horse it’s time to look at yards. Make sure you ask exactly what is included in the livery package as extras such as

trailer parking can soon mount up. Good places to look for livery are the notice boards of local feed stores, the local small ad paper and word of mouth from other local horse owners. First impressions count, so when you arrive check that the yard is clean and tidy with no tools left lying around to cause injury. Make sure the yard can offer decent storage for hay and feed and that the tack room is secure, although I always advocate taking your tack home with you due more to outsiders breaking in and stealing everyone’s tack. Turn out is a huge consideration for some and I personally feel that horses need to go out everyday even if just for a few hours. Check that the yard does include some winter turn out for both your and your horse’s sanity! Look carefully at the state of the fencing – barbed wire is dreadful for horses causing nasty injuries. Post and rail is preferable but are high maintenance, so most yards these days opt for electric fencing being both secure and easy to maintain. Whether your horse has an individual paddock or shared, turn out should be considered and discussed at the time of viewing so both parties know where they stand regarding grazing arrangements. If you are the owner of a ‘good doer type’ that gets fat easily, be sure to ask if you can strip graze or if the yard have a starvation/laminitic paddock available for use. Check the yard has a decent worm control strategy in place, one which is endorsed by an SQP or a vet, some yard owners are still a little in the past regarding responsible use of wormers! Not only does this give you something different to look forward to but it also gives your carer some support and/or respite from the care they provide by taking over for the day. This allows them to have peace of mind to take time out and to recharge their batteries!

The Day Care Centre is open every Tuesday between 10:00am and 3:30pm. It is aimed at people over 65 including those who have early dementia or memory problems, those who need to get away from the isolation felt in their house or those who need some variety in their lives. Refreshments and a home cooked two-course lunch are available plus a warm, safe, welcoming environment in which to enjoy your visit. Help and Company offer a free trial session which will allow you to sample some of the activities which are on offer every Tuesday. Their unique attitude and professional approach allows them to make a substantial and distinctive impact in the lives of many people. They have a large number of clients and carers but, very importantly, they strongly believe in matching only one or two carers, all of whom are enhanced CRB checked, to each client. Maypole Dance and the cruel hand of fête! John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

t’s that time of year again. The start of the Village fête season. And especially that most glorious of institutions… the May Day Maypole fête. Every year, villagers meet to celebrate this tradition that dates back beyond medieval times – and every year things go wrong. Oh yes, perhaps just the odd mishap at each event I know, but if you put them all together, what a wonderful day that would make! So lets amalgamate this May celebration from over the years and see what sort of day it would be… For starters there must be rain. Not necessarily on the day. No, I’m thinking of the long periods of rain that seemed to precede the day so that although the morn beamed bright and sunny there lurked beneath the fresh green grass a gluttonous, patient layer of mud. This would only show itself later in the afternoon when it was time to recover the car from the local field. Many a car bumper has been lost to the sharp tug of a tractor! So to the event itself… There is always a ‘show ’ ring. This will be carefully marked off to one side of the manicured cricket square which in turn is roped off by the groundsman in the vain hope that the children will respect the valiant efforts he has made trying to get the pitch ready for the new season. (One suspects that if he had his way the rope would be replaced with an electric fence borrowed from the local dairy farm.) The ring itself will be occupied all afternoon by a steady stream of players all urged on to greater efforts by some chap yelling full bore into the sound system accompanied by the feedback from the microphone that utters shrill shrieks every few minutes, much of this is in a far higher register than the human ear can detect, but which the dogs assembled for their part in the afternoon’s events can hear with obvious agitation, their roused humour evident in the complete lack of discipline that they show as they partake in the mid-afternoon Obedience Class. There are, of course, the compulsory races. The children’s present no problem, and even the mothers

do their bit with some degree of decorum. But the men’s! Now that’s something else. This is a case of losing face in front of the entire village. Reputations and manhood have to be demonstrated to all who have gathered. The result: complete hilarity. Men are not designed to run 100 yards after a full belly of beer, two hot-dogs and no exercise for the past twelve months. The first 20 are covered with some form of dignity, encouraged by the shouts of their wives and children. The last 80 are pure unmitigated torture. Redfaced, eyes bulging, and gasping for breath, the majority stagger over the finishing tape with legs as heavy as lead and leaking most of their liquid intake through sweating faces and soggy shirts. Over the years the older menfolk have learnt that it is far safer and a great deal more fun to observe the festivities from the relative safety of the pub doorway and only venture forth to the edge of the melée when the hog roast has reached maturity. Thus we come to the main event. The Maypole Dance… The CD strikes up. Out from the school doorway comes the enthusiastic children herded by two or three teachers and an assortment of volunteer mothers. The girls look like little angels in their May Day finery, the boys look suitably fed up and bored. There is a five-minute pause while the various ribbons from the pole are untangled and distributed. Minor squabbles are settled with some difficulty and one girl inevitably refuses to join in and sits weeping noisily at the Maypole’s base while two boys kick each other with distinct pleasure as the teachers are distracted from their warder roles. At last there is some measure of organisation and for a quarter of an hour there is pure delight on everyone’s face as the age-old designs are formed and re-formed on the latticework of ribbons. The children finally depart the green with the sound of warm and heartfelt applause from the assembly. Even the menfolk raise a glass from the pub forecourt and hide a misty eye. illingshurst Support Group for MacMillan joined forces with So India Restaurant in Codmore Hill, Pulborough to put on a brilliant fundraising evening on 21st March. With a full restaurant serving a delicious set menu and a fantastic raffle success was guaranteed! Wey & Arun Canal Centre, Loxwood now open!

ore than 200 supporters and guests enthusiastically welcomed the opening of the Canal Centre at Loxwood, West Sussex, on Sunday 1st April. Mike Coleman, Chairman of West Sussex County Council, cut the red ribbon and saluted the exceptional work by all the volunteers. Sally Schupke, Chairman of the Wey & Arun Canal Trust, said that the history of the Canal Centre went back a long way. The Trust had started by planning a wooden ticket office in the car-park, then started thinking about a log cabin. A fortunate meeting with generous sponsors led to more ambitious thoughts and the splendid new building was the result. The Canal Trust was an environmentally aware group and had wanted a very ‘green’ building – constructed from sustainably sourced materials and with exceptionally low energy requirements. Sussex company Fordingbridge plc had responded skilfully to the Trust’s requirements. Sally hoped that Loxwood residents would be proud of the

canal in their village; she recalled that one of the first jobs canal restorers had carried out in the area was to remove tons of glass from the canal bed behind The Onslow Arms, which had been used as a bottle dump. Later the ‘black shed’, a corrugated iron lean-to behind the nearby pub became the Trust’s publicity centre, but by the 21st century it had become completely inadequate. 10,000 passengers enjoyed boat trips on the canal last year and many others visit just for a walk along the peaceful canalside paths. Sally asked members to remember Tim Jolly, who had sadly died in 2010 at the age of 62. Tim used to spend nearly every summer Sunday at Loxwood helping on the Trust’s publicity stand and sharing his enthusiasm with visitors. The Trust was also proud of the fact that no public money had been involved as all the fund raising had been done by the Trust’s supporters. She finished by thanking all those who had been involved: John Pryce, the Project Manager and Ian Burton, the Trust’s Conservation Adviser, who produced the landscaping design. In May our art exhibition will be a selection of paintings by Ted Poole – whose work was very popular in Spring 2011 (his painting Old Town, Crete, is to the left). Arundel Arts Society will be displaying artwork in June and the the Weald School will display the best GCSE and A Level work between the 22nd of June and the 6th of July – last year’s work was excellent.
