elcome to the May issue of Village Tweet, the 30th issue. Such is the plethora of places and events to go to this month I am unable to fit all the What’s On entries on two pages. But do keep the entries coming; many readers tell me they find the What’s On pages very useful and regularly refer to it. And of course this also benefits the advertisers as, unlike local newspapers, the magazine is kept handy for the whole month! At last it is beginning to feel like spring, my favourite season, although I hope I am not tempting providence by putting such a gorgeous spring photograph on the cover! Theft from your vehicle – don’t become a crime statistic!
V
ehicle users are being warned not to leave valuables on display in their vehicles in a bid to deter thieves. The Horsham District remains a relatively low crime area, which can only be improved by responsible and informed owners taking action to avoid the potential loss of property. Vehicle crime in the Horsham District has fallen by 13.4% compared to the last year, but vehicle users are still at risk, especially from the opportunist thief. Most vehicle crime can be prevented by taking a number of simple security precautions. Tips from Sussex Police include: l Do not leave handbags or wallets in the car. Even if handbags do not contain anything valuable, a thief will not know that and might still break a window to get at it. l Make sure the doors of the vehicle are locked and the windows and sunroof are closed even if the vehicle will only be left for a couple of minutes. l Make sure the car is parked in a location where it is in clear view of other people, not obscured from sight by trees or shrubs, therefore making it more vulnerable. At night, park in a well lit area.
The most commonly stolen items from cars include satellite navigation systems, handbags and mobile phones. They are easy to remove quickly, are easily concealed and do not look out of place if a thief is seen walking away from a car. l Make sure coats and jackets are not left behind in the car. A thief may think that it is hiding a laptop or handbag and break into the car to find out. l Should anything untoward happen, descriptions and car registrations should be noted and given to the police at the time of suspicious incidents. Chief Inspector Howard Hodges, Horsham District Commander at Sussex Police, said, “The solution to avoid becoming the next victim is easy: Don’t leave any valuables in your car. Thinking you can hide them under your seat or in the boot or footwell is not an option as thieves know where to look. By taking a few simple precautions, you can ensure that you don’t become the next theft victim.” l

Buttermilk Scones With Fruit Compote
METHOD
1. Heat oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7. Sift the flour and salt together. Rub in the butter until the mixture is like fine crumbs. Stir in the sugar and raisins or sultanas if using. 2. Gently warm the buttermilk and vanilla in a microwave or pan. Using your largest bowl, quickly tip in some of the flour mix, followed by some of the buttermilk mix, repeating until everything is in the bowl. Use a knife to quickly mix together to form a dough – don’t over-mix it. 3. Tip onto a floured surface and lightly bring together with your hands a couple of times. Press out gently to about 4cm thick and stamp out rounds with a 6cm or 7cm cutter. Re-shape trimmings, until all the dough is used. Place scones evenly on to a lightly floured baking sheet or two. 4. Add a splash of milk into the buttermilk pot, and then use to glaze the top of each scone. Bake for 10-12 mins until golden and well risen. To Make The Fruit Compote: 1. Place as much of the frozen fruit as you need in the saucepan, on a gentle heat on the hob. 2. Simmer the fruit in the saucepan on the hob until the fruit starts to soften; stir gently now and again just enough so that the fruit does not stick to the pan; do not allow it to burn. 3. Now add sugar to taste – not too much at first. Taste the fruit as you add the sugar so that you do not make it too sweet or leave it too tart. Take care not to burn yourself when testing it. 4. Once the fruit has softened, but before it turns to a pulp or goes too mushy, it is ready and you should remove it from the heat to cool. It keeps for 2-3 days in the fridge.
Makes 10-12. Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time: 15 minutes
INGREDIENTS
Scones 450g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting ¼ tsp salt 100g cold butter, diced 85g golden caster sugar Handful of raisins or sultanas (optional) 284ml pot buttermilk 2 tsp vanilla extract Splash of milk Compote Frozen fruit of choice – summer fruit mix is good, sour cherries are fantastic Sugar to taste

Relay for Life ‘Research saves lives’ Christ’s Hospital School, 1-2 June
L
ocal lady Margaret Matschy is living an extraordinary life. She has been diagnosed with cancer twice and survived. Margaret believes this is due to no stroke of luck, she believes in one thing – research. Without which, she feels she would not be here. In March 1998 Margaret found a lump in her breast; a trip to a specialist and a mammogram confirmed her worst fears. A biopsy and lumpectomy operation followed along with the removal of 31 lymph nodes. Doctors confirmed that it was likely the cancer had spread and a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy was started. “I lost a lot of hair at first” said Margaret. “Thankfully, though, I was in the clear. My liver and bones were OK, but the treatment was very intrusive and lasted weeks. Afterwards I was left with a lot of very bad scarring and no natural shape. I remember all of my family being shocked, it was just before my birthday and they all thought it would be my last. But I thought, “No, I’m not ready to go yet.” Margaret survived and went on to celebrate happy family events including her daughter’s wedding and the birth of her grandchildren – which was extremely fortunate, as they had already lost both their natural grandfathers due to cancer. Her life ticked along happily for the next 14 years until 2011 when Margaret found a lump in her other breast. Ironically, at age 69, it was her last appointment before her routine mammogram when the lump was found and Margaret steeled herself once more. “I was expecting much of the same severity, so I was surprised when far fewer nodes were removed. The time between treatments was dramatically shorter and the advancement in the skill of the surgeons was amazing. I was left with a nice natural shape. Luckily this time I only had to undergo radiotherapy and not chemotherapy. I remember thinking at the time that the improvements in the medical treatments I received were really noticeable, and I truly
8
believe that research has saved my life.” That was two years ago. Today Margaret is looking forward to joining other cancer survivors at Horsham’s Relay For Life where she will walk the first lap as a guest of honour. She feels privileged to be part of the event and explains, “So many people thought of me and motivated me to keep going. Being a survivor at the Relay is a brilliant way of showing people you can survive, there is hope. So please come along and let’s support one another.” Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life is a community-led, non-athletic event where teams fund-raise and then Margaret with her grandchildren join together in the Relay event. There, teams take it in turns to walk round a track for up to 24 hours to signify that ‘cancer never sleeps’. Cancer survivors of all ages launch the Relay For Life as VIPs by walking the first lap. They’re cheered on by family, friends and Relay participants from the community who have come together to celebrate their achievements. If you’ve ever been diagnosed with cancer we’d love you to inspire others and be a guest of honour at Relay For Life. The event takes place over 24 hours at Christ’s Hospital School, Horsham over the weekend of 1st and 2nd June. In addition to the walk, there will be stalls, competitions, sports activities and plenty of entertainment to keep visitors and participants amused. Indeed, local businesses are now encouraged to take advantage of an array of corporate sponsorship opportunities. For more information on how to get involved with Relay For Life Christ’s Hospital, please contact Lisa Love, Survivorship Chair – 07792 485650 or by email chrelayforlife@live.com. If you would like to find out more about forming a team to take part in the event or would like to volunteer to help over the weekend, please contact Kate/Jess 07505 150169/07747 662702, email chrelayteams@live.co.uk. Fire-fighters charity car wash a great success
B
illingshurst fire-fighters were out in force in March, raising money for the Fire-Fighters Charity – the UK’s leading provider of services that enhance quality of life for serving and retired fire-fighters, fire personnel and their families. Their vision is to make a positive difference by supporting people in the fire and rescue community when they are in need. Over the years they have helped hundreds of thousands of individuals by providing world-class treatment and support services. It costs £9million a year to keep the charity running and with no government funding the charity are completely reliant on the generosity and enthusiasm of our supporters. The role of a firefighter is one of bravery, loyalty and devotion to public service. Just like fire-fighters, the charity is passionate about their work and the services they provide to the men
10
and women who risk their lives to help others. In sub-zero temperatures the brushes and sponges were out to make sure the locals had sparkling clean cars! The charity car wash is held twice a year, so if you missed out this time watch this space for the date in September. We are also planning an open day on the 14th September, 12:00-16:00, which is a great chance for parents and children to come and watch some of the situations that we are faced with including ladder drills, road traffic collision demonstration, chip pan fire display and much more. The charity car wash in March raised a staggering £937.10 and this couldn’t have been achieved without the generorsity and support from everyone who was part of a great fundraising day. Once again, from everyone at Billingshurst Fire Station, THANK YOU. Dan Game

Dancing in the Streets
B
orn on the streets of England; battles between two sides; wooden weapons instead of knives or swords; men and women with their own colours; the dance craze Morris can be seen as a medieval equivalent of today’s Hip Hop. Yet because it is over 600 years old rather than 40 it is seen as quaint, rustic and funny in a peculiarly English way. But today’s image belies a rich culture that is celebrated with a Day of Dance in the ancient medieval town of Horsham on 11th May. On that day the town is full of Morris and other traditional dancers showcasing their moves. It is a riot of colour, movement, fancy footwork and noise that occurs less than 30 miles from the gritty streets of London. The Broadwood Day of Dance builds on a fantastic folk tradition that, 100 years ago, saw Horsham as a hub of folk music and dance. To many, Broadwood is synonymous with piano makers, but in the world of music, Lucy (a daughter of the celebrated family) made her name collecting folk music and, through her, Ralph Vaughan Williams visited Horsham, capturing many tunes. Paying their respects to this lady the Broadwood Morris Men and women took her name and thus began many years of promoting and celebrating a traditional English art form. Now, once a year, they take over the
town of 40,000 souls, transforming every medieval street corner or open space into a public arena to show their passion. This year one of the Broadwood Morris men stalwarts, Old Harry, will not be present as he passed away, but Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery will be displaying one of his Morris costumes through the generosity of his daughter. The recent donation is a fitting acquisition as the museum also holds the archive of the celebrated folk singer Henry Burstow, a cobbler whose autobiography is a classic of working class literature. The backdrop for all this dance mayhem is the timber-framed stone-roved medieval market town of Horsham. A town whose 800-year-old market tradition has seen a renaissance in recent years and in keeping with the day’s celebration stall holders will be decked out in suitable attire. The Broadwood Morris Day of Dance is a free festival of traditional dance with groups coming across the region. It takes place on Saturday 11th May throughout the town. For further information contact Horsham District Council’s Visitor Information Centre (01403 215100) or Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery (01403 254959). Both new routes take in all counties covered by the two helicopters and the 100-mile route (shown below) will pass through Marden in Kent – the home of Kent Air Ambulance. More than 80 riders including Air Ambulance crew members and former patients took part in the inaugural Double 100 from Dunsfold Park, raising £12,000 for the charity. Organisers are aiming for more than 100 entries in this year’s event which has kindly

May Day / About the house
May Day
M
ay Day is celebrated on the first Monday of the month. It originates from village celebrations marking the coming of summer. The following traditions often take place among a day of festivities: Maypoles are hung with greenery and ribbons and painted brightly. Local children dress in their finest clothes, with bells and flower garlands, and perform traditional ribbon dances such as Gypsy Tent and The Spiders Web. Originally maypoles were made by villagers using a young tall tree. They stripped off the lower branches, but left leaves at the top to symbolise new life, and then decorated it with flowers and ribbons. The Crowning of the May Queen is linked to

the honouring of Flora the Roman goddess of fruit and flowers. Traditionally she took no part in games or dancing, but sat like a queen in a flower-decked chair to watch her ‘subjects’. Morris dancing is a traditional form of English folk dancing carried out by groups known as sides. Dances are passed down through generations, and involve movements to accentuate the tinkling of bells attached to costumes and coming together to strike wooden sticks. Loud accordion music accompanies the dancing. Sometimes dancers paint their faces black, and this association with the North African Moors may explain the origins of the name ‘Morris’ dancing. Book reviews
A Good Read May’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett The Glass Room – Ann Cleeves You may have come across Ann Cleeves’ creation, Vera Stanhope, in the television adaptations of this popular series of novels. If you haven’t, don’t worry, you won’t be disappointed. For those coming to the books from the television series, the adaptations are faithful enough for the characters to be recognisable. However, the real attraction is in the genuine twists and turns that Cleeves provides, and in her ability to provide realistic, believable and sympathetic protagonists and villains. The Glass House is set, as are all of the series, in Northumberland. As it begins, Vera Stanhope’s neighbour has disappeared. There is no real mystery to that, she is easily tracked down to a local writers’ retreat. However, as Vera arrives to find out what has motivated her sudden departure, she finds herself at the scene of a murder. The victim, a writer and critic, does not seem to be mourned by many. Then more deaths follow, and it becomes clear that the killer is playing with the police, leaving false trails and seemingly enjoying the thrill of the chase. One of the strengths of Cleeves’ writing is that while she often takes us into Vera Stanhope’s consciousness, she also uses the perspective of the long suffering Sergeant Joe Ashworth, and in this case also develops the characters’ potential victims and suspects so that we see events from differing points of view. Just enough is revealed to keep us moving forward, but never enough to make the conclusion obvious. Here, with the twin themes of writing and detection, Cleeves is in her element, and the plot moves swiftly onwards with a clever turn at the end of each chapter.
There is no need to read the previous novels in the series in order to read The Glass Room. However, once you’ve read it I would be surprised if you did not feel the need to seek out the earlier volumes, all of which are equally impressive. Dracula – A Counting Primer – Jennifer Adams and Alison Oliver From the moment you pick up this board book, you know it is different. The Gothic colour scheme is a clue – there are no pastels here, only purple, black and grey. The vampire on the cover is admittedly rather cute, but he is still recognisably Count Dracula. And as you work though the text… well, you can call them ‘boxes’ if you like, but they are coffins! So why am I recommending this book? Because quite simply, the concept and execution are superb. The BabyLit series, which features Dracula alongside Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre and Romeo and Juliet, introduces classic literature in the form of a counting book. All are beautifully designed, with appropriately thematic illustrations, and based carefully on the text. So, Dracula (my favourite, although Little Miss Austen comes a close second) features one castle, four ships, five heroes and the aforementioned nine ‘boxes’. The attention to detail is meticulous. The Demeter of course is one of those four ships, and the page featuring seven letters and diaries is almost a miniature telling of the whole tale. My own children are past the board book stage but that doesn’t matter, because I wouldn’t give them this book anyway, and not because it is too scary, oh no, it is too good. It is mine.

Community / About the house
World Book Day comes to Billingshurst Primary School Billingshurst Primary School held a special dress-up day on 7th March to celebrate this year’s World Book Day, highlighting the joys of reading to pupils. The children looked fantastic and the range of characters was truly amazing, including Harry Potters, lots of Where’s Wallies, Cats in the Hat, princesses and a Tiger Who Came To Tea. The staff joined in the fun with the all the Year 6 teachers dressing up as Where’s Wally, there was a big bad wolf in Year 1 and even a Harry Potter Dementor chasing after the Hermiones and Harrys in Year 2. The school is one of thousands across the UK and Ireland marking the occasion by showing how magical books can be. The story time at the end of the day worked really well and you could have heard a pin drop as the children were so absorbed in listening to favourite tales.
24
Some of the members of the Year 6 book club continued the celebrations of the day by attending the Weald Book Award later on in the evening. They performed a short sketch on stage, which showed just how much they had enjoyed the books they had been reading. They wrote a funny script, had great costumes and performed with real panache! Head Teacher Helen Williamson said, “Good reading starts early and children who share books with other are more likely to develop language skills and advanced reading levels. Our event is a fun way to get the children’s imaginations fired up and encourage them to become avid readers.” World Book Day aims to help children explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with a £1 book token. The ‘outside’ Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …
L
ily was still moaning about the noisy neighbours and how much she wished they could all go outside, and Uno, her little ram lamb, was wondering what ‘outside’ was. He soon found out because Sally and Bill opened the gates and the whole flock, except those still in the nursery pens stampeded out and into the paddock. All the grown-up sheep put their heads down and began to munch the green stuff which was on the ground. Uno tried some. It didn’t come too easily but it tasted different and delicious. Uno was soon munching too. Then the older sheep started to move around and as Uno looked up he couldn’t believe his eyes. There was so much room to move and play! He chased Kinsey and the other lambs and soon they were having a lovely game of ‘chasey’. But as it grew dark, their mums called them, they had a quick snack, snuggled by their mums and settled down to sleep. They spent a couple of days doing this although it was colder at night than Uno was used to. One of the uncomfortable things about the bigger space was when Uno wanted a drink from his mum, she would move to the next patch of grass and poor Uno lost his balance and fell over. But he soon picked himself up
and after a little while he stopped falling over. So that was okay with him. Then one night it grew very cold and the wind blew through the paddock. Uno didn’t like that very much, but his mum was warm and it seemed alright. They slept like that until dawn and then something strange happened. The air grew even colder and the wind even stronger. Out of the air fell huge big white flakes of snow. It fell on the ground and the trees and the fences and on the sheep. Soon everything including the sheep had a coating of snow. The wind blew fiercely and it was wet and cold. Uno shivered and shivered; he did not like this one little bit. He longed to go back to the nursery. Not long after Sally got up, she and Bill decided to bring the sheep in out of the weather, so with a bucket of food and the gates opened, Sally cried, “Grr-up”, and the sheep thundered back into the goats’ corral to shelter and have nice hay to lie on. Uno was so pleased. Although ‘outside’ could be nice, with grass and room to play, he didn’t much like it at all with its coating of white. It was too cold, wet and horrible. It would be nearly another month before they all would be allowed ‘outside’ again, and Uno liked that just fine. He preferred ‘inside’ any day. Yvonne Fleece

Worm counts – helping to reduce resistance
T
here has been a recent move by the BVA (British Veterinary Association) to call upon the veterinary medicines regulator to reclassify all anthelmintics (wormers) as a POM-V medication. This will mean that horse wormers will no longer be available from feed merchants, saddlers or even the internet, but owners would have to have them prescribed by a veterinary surgeon. The reason for this move is cited as the growing concern of resistance to wormers. For many years outdated worming practises of blanket worming entire yards at six-weekly intervals has enabled some worms to survive the chemicals and reproduce a worm population which can resist the action of the wormer making it inefficient and allowing those worm populations to flourish unchecked. Currently there are no new wormers in development so we must try to keep what we have effective. So, what can we as owners do to help slow down the onset of resistance? Some of you may have heard of worm counts, whereby a faecal sample is taken and sent to a lab to be tested. This involves the sample being put into a centrifuge, then placed onto a slide and observed under a microscope. A count of worm eggs is undertaken, the results are interpreted as EPG or eggs per gram. Over a period of time an owner can build up a picture of the horse’s health status and worm burden and treat accordingly. The idea behind the worm count is to cut down on giving horses unnecessary chemical wormers and thus reducing the onset of resistance. Worm counts and strategic treatment can be more cost effective than routinely worming a horse every 6-13 weeks! It is very important to remember that worm counts do not show up all types of worms. As we are counting the eggs being output with the faeces we must remember that we can get a false negative count whereby the animal could be carrying very large numbers of non-egg laying juvenile worms, hence a negative count. Encysted small red worms hidden away in the gut wall are a very good example of this and therefore must be treated with a suitable wormer during the winter months. Tapeworm is another parasite that can escape a worm count although your vet can perform an ELISA blood test to determine if this parasite is a problem in your horse. Worm counts are becoming more popular with owners as they begin to understand their benefits.
30
Regular counts enable owners to target those horses that are carrying the worm population – it is said that 80% of worms are carried by 20% of horses. Taking a count could not be easier! To get the most accurate evaluation of the sample it is best to take a small piece of dung from several piles and mix together before putting some in the sample pot. Post you sample to your chosen company as soon as possible, don’t leave it festering in the car or tackroom for days! Worm counts can also be used to determine if a wormer has worked or not. To determine if there is resistance to a wormer you can take a worm count before worming and then again 10-14 days after worming. If the count comes back as low or no eggs seen then the wormer is working. New horses arriving should have a worm count which will determine any treatment that may be needed before the new horse is allowed to graze with the rest of the herd. I would do this even if the owner tells me the horse has been wormed as I would want to determine if the animal is carrying a resistant worm strain. Interpreting the results. When you receive your results it will have your horse’s name followed by the number of eggs found, for instance “< 50epg no eggs seen” means at that time the horse is deemed clear of parasites. It is very important to repeat the test at the next interval where you would normally give a routine worming dose to determine if this is still the case. If the count is between 200 and 1,200 EPG this is a medium count and the horse will need worming, consult your vet or SQP for advice on the best product to use. For high counts over 1,200 EPG the horse will need worming and the worming programme will need a serious overhaul. As well as worm counts regular poo picking of paddocks, cross-grazing with other species such ry as sheep or cattle and not over overgrazing le d pasture can all help in the fight against d y, sa ha wormer resistance. , k ly ge Jeannette Douglas. Living with Laika – Is it really spring?!
T
he short, very moving valediction for Bailey Adam in the March edition of Village Tweet, reminded me of the simple pleasures associated with walking with a dog. I’m not talking about the daily promenade in the morning and evening associated with toilet stops, poo bags and haunted by other leashed canines and rogue cats. A walk disturbed by protruding bushes, fences, grass verges and the dreaded lampposts and ruined by pedestrians! The type of dog walk that Laika and I enjoy is of the free-range variety where the space is wide, the solitude palpable and the backdrop interesting. Thankfully West Sussex is tattooed with perfect dog walking country with footpaths and bridleways crisscrossing woods and fields and with a shoreline guaranteed to make every self-respecting dog lover sit up and beg! There is nothing more soothing than watching your dog take flight to investigate new scents, pursue errant rabbits and generally luxuriate in being without the confines of a lead. There is nothing more energising than being out, man and dog, on a fine clear day in early spring with the blackthorn coming into bud, the robins, thrushes and blackbirds starting to compete with their song

and early bluebells pushing their way through the autumn carpet of oak leaves. Already, early rooks are winging their way to high trees laden with sticks and the plaintive mewing of a pair of buzzards high over Rosier Wood heralds the breeding season. Perfect. Except for the mud! I’m talking about the thick, brown, oozy guck that only Weald clay can provide when wet. Mud deep enough to lose a wellie in. Mud noxious enough to cause trench foot and mud fever (ask a horse!). Our daily odysseys into the countryside have become reminiscent of troop movements during the Somme offensive with areas that Laika and I have officially declared as ‘No Man’s Land’. Laika of course, seems pretty oblivious to my muttered expletives as I ‘surf’ down drenched inclines and grasp at naked saplings for support. She’s in her world where freedom reigns, unfettered and her own mistress for a time! Freedom comes with a price of course and in Laika’s case it’s a thorough dousing under the garden hose followed by an assault with the hair dryer. How I long for a dry spring like the one in 2011 – don’t tell the farmers! Ron Myal

A Jar of Nostalgia
I
f you’re reading this you probably have an interest in gardening, but even armchair gardeners must be happy that spring is now well under way. May brings with it a wonderful selection of flowers, mainly in cool blues, purples, pinks and whites, and some great fragrances too, including the heady scent of Lilac. It’s an old fashioned shrub which has fallen out of favour, and for the majority of the year it looks relatively uninteresting – but the Lilac bush smells fantastic in a gentle May evening breeze. Mix this aroma with the scent of freshly mown grass and you have the most perfect spring fragrance, better than any air-freshener. After a long winter with more snow than I can ever remember, and yet more depressing news about our economy, I think what we all need is to enjoy a little nostalgia; I’m not talking bunting here, but bedding plants. Towards the end of the month is the time when bedding plants and other tender perennials can be planted outside. Thousands of people will flock to garden centres up and down the country over the coming weeks, and for some it’s their only pilgrimage of the year to the outdoor retail world. It’s an opportunity for the nurseryman (or woman) to display row after row of highly colourful plants, stacked, tray by tray like jars of sweets in an old fashioned shop. Each standing to attention, faces held high, their label pointing forwards and each doing their utmost to shout “buy me, buy me”. The flowers shine in the sunshine like the sparkling boiled fruit sweets in the jars, oh what is it to be, the bicoloured rhubarb custards, or the combination of

blackberry and raspberry jellies? Choosing your colour scheme for this year’s bedding display (be that just the one hanging basket or a front garden that looks like a Victorian public park) is exciting, and a totally personal task. I’ve know it can cause arguments between couples, but have also known marriages which have survived successfully on the basis that “you plant your side and I’ll plant mine”. There are those who like a multi-coloured cocktail of plants (a mixed tray of Petunias for example), those who prefer to stick to a muted pallet of two or three ‘sophisticated colours’ (usually purple, blue and white) and then those trying to achieve a Swiss cottage look who might plump for just the one (perhaps a red trailing Ivy Leafed Pelargonium). But whatever your preference I don’t think it really matters, because buying annual bedding plants brings nostalgic happiness all round; it’s good for the nurseryman’s business, brilliant for passers-by to enjoy, and most importantly great at making you feel happy at home. Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net Garden tasks for May: Watch out for late frosts. Protect tender plants. Earth up potatoes. Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs.

Fame… it’s a Dog’s Life John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
T
hey say that we all are due two minutes of fame during our lifetime. I think that I may have had mine usurped by a dog. It all happened several years ago when the BBC contacted us as to whether we would be prepared to take part in the Countryfile Farming Diary. This involved them giving us a camera for a month or so and letting us film the whole of the apple harvest that was about to take place. They would check our production half-way through the month and offer any advice they saw fit and we would then proceed to the final day’s pick. Naturally with my inbuilt shyness and reticence… I leapt at the chance. Came the day and we were shown how to operate the beautiful little camera and then left to our own devices. Of course I got carried away. I filmed anything and everything that moved or, for that matter, didn’t. Quite a little Hitchcock I was, much to the amusement of the pickers who, I noticed, had suddenly adorned make-up and sling back shoes and pink Marigolds to climb ladders in! But it was a huge giggle and much enjoyed by all of us. Then came the moment for the professional boys to view, edit and comment on my attempts so far… Thankfully it was not too bad. They said that this or that needed more viewing and try not to be such a plonker with the unscripted commentary (Not their exact words of course, but you get the gist). Also would I get more footage of the dog? The dog? I wasn’t aware that I had included ‘the dog’ in my efforts. Still, orders must be obeyed and I duly included a few passing

glances of Jacko in some of the next few pictures I took as I wandered through the orchards filming the girls as they gathered the crop and its subsequent transporting from the fields to the stores. Then it was all over. The camera was reluctantly returned to its rightful owners and the hours of filming delivered to the editing department of the BBC for any slight trimming that might be needed of my skilful artistry. Comes the day. Huddled in front of the box, eager to see the results of all that work. Glowing with selfinflicted pride at the prospect of seeing myself and the girls in glorious Technicolor. There followed about four minutes of filming that I admit was entertaining, and quite informative to anyone who was unfamiliar with apple picking, but by far the star of the show was that blasted dog. The BBC obviously thought him a far better attraction than yours truly. He was in everything. From beginning to end, in every shot, there he was. Grinning his stupid Jack Russell grin at all and sundry. Sitting by pickers’ ladders, riding on the bonnet of the tractor, snacking on pieces of apple at breaktimes, and even when there were some late shots of the inside of the farm shop, there he was, reflected in the display cabinets mirrors as he wandered around the customers’ feet. I must admit we too were smitten by him, and privately rather proud of the love that the camera and the editors had obviously felt for him. But, still, how would you feel? Two minutes of fame they say, two minutes, that’s all. Darn, blasted, interfering animal; but we loved every tangled tuft of hair on his body. John Nash Photo: Jacko gets his two munutes of fame!

The Lowdown on Laptops
aptop computers can offer the power of a desktop with the flexibility and freedom to use them where you wish. There is an astonishing range of products available, ranging in price from a few hundred pounds up to two thousand. As with all technology purchases it’s essential to do your research first – work out what you need, what you’re willing to pay for, and what you can do without. The cheapest option is a netbook. They are smaller and lighter than laptops, but don’t have the same range of features. They are perfect if you want to browse the internet and send emails while you’re out and about. The keyboard and larger screen can make them easier to use than a smartphone or tablet computer, such as an iPad. The next step up is a cheap laptop. These are suitable for everyday tasks such as word processing and web browsing, and are good for computer novices. They are portable, but may be bulky. You may have to pay more if you need to store more data on the computer (such as movies) or use it for more demanding tasks (such as gaming or editing video). Sleek and light designs also come at a premium. Use this quick guide to help you understand laptop lingo and work out which one is right for you: Operating system – Windows is the bestselling operating system (OS) and is installed on most laptops. Macbooks
(Apple’s laptop) are more expensive (though beautifully engineered) and use Apple’s OS which is very easy to use. (Village Tweet’s Editor loves Macs!) l Memory – this has a big influence on how fast the laptop will run. Aim for at least 4 gigabytes (GB) of RAM. l Storage – the hard drive is where programs, files, data and documents are stored. Look for 320 or 500 GB if you want to store lots of videos, music or photographs. l Processor – a dual core basic processor should come as standard. Processors are normally made by Intel or AMD. AMD is cheaper; Intel processors get more powerful as the model number increases. l Battery life – most laptop batteries will last for five or six hours. More expensive models may go for longer, but invest in a spare if you are often out for the day. l Screen size – a 15-inch display is fine for most users. Choose a larger screen for playing computer games or using design software. l Weight – hold it in your hands if you can! Remember, you’ll be carrying the laptop around, or sitting with it on your knee. l Controls – Make sure the keyboard and trackpad are comfortable to use and consider getting a separate mouse. l Drives – some laptops don’t include CD/DVD drives and you may need to buy an external one.
