t has always been our aim to support the community and local business, and we are of course always glad to hear of new businesses. You will remember in March we announced Mark Sheath’s takeover of the Jengers Mead bakery following the previous owner’s retirement. On 10th May, another new business launches in Jengers Mead: Fresh, Russell Noakes’ fruit and veg shop with a difference (see page 6). Royal Mail takes a few days to complete distribution of the magazine but if you are reading this on Monday 28th April get yourself along to the Community Centre for Fresh’s Taster Event! Aubergine and Chickpea Curry Celebrate National Vegetarian Week (19-25 May) with this tasty curry
METHOD
1. Chop the aubergine into large chunks (about 1 inch/2.5cm across). Heat ½ tbsp oil in a large non-stick pan, and brown half the aubergine chunks for 2-3 mins on each side until golden brown and crisp all over. Remove to a plate, then repeat with another ½ tbsp oil and the remaining aubergines, then set everything aside. 2. Add the remaining tbsp oil to the pan with the mustard seeds and curry leaves and fry for 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir in the onions and continue cooking until they are softened and beginning to brown. Add the dried chillies and spices with a spoonful of the thick coconut milk from the top of the can, then fry for 1 minute more. Add the remaining coconut milk, tomatoes and half a can of water. Simmer for 25-30 minutes until thick and saucy. 3. Stir in the chickpeas and aubergines. Continue simmering for 5 minutes or so, until everything is hot and the aubergines are tender. Serve with rice or warm naan bread.

Sussex man Russell makes a ‘Fresh’ start in Jengers Mead
H
ave you heard the news? A new fruit and veg shop with a difference – ‘Fresh’ – is opening in Jengers Mead on Saturday 10th May. Russell Noakes moved to Billingshurst last year, previously living in Petworth. Originally with a desire to go into banking, this all changed when Russell took on a part-time job at a supermarket while at college. At the end of his college course he had the opportunity to progress in retail and has never looked back. Russell recalls: “You often hear stories of someone working their way up from the bottom and becoming a manager – with me that was all true.” 21 years in retail is evidence that Russell made the right decision: “I have been fortunate to work with and for many fantastic people. I have always been driven and passionate to succeed at what I do, constantly drawing inspiration from my experience and at times putting career ahead of other personal dreams.” Russell is keen to thank his parents, family and friends for their part in his success especially in recent years when he suffered a setback due to ill health. “Their love and support have been a tower of strength and I am keen to repay them by making my new business venture a success.” So, just what is special about Russell’s new shop,
‘Fresh’? Well, he is keen and committed to give Billingshurst a business strong in that traditional quality that is often lacking: customer service. Selling fresh fruit and vegetables and a range of fresh foods, including fresh smoothies, the shop will have a strong rustic feel. Looking after the customer extends to offering a delivery service and providing great quality fresh food at an affordable price using local Sussex suppliers and wholesalers. Russell says, “It was important to me when meeting with suppliers that they bought into my vision of the service I aim to provide, including pre-packed deli products and local well known brands.” As well as creating positive business and local links, Russell also plans to support local charities. He has already forged a link with local charity, the Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy. On 28th April Russell is running a pre-opening Taster event at the Community and Conference Centre in Roman Way from 10.30am-2pm. (If you receive your copy of Village Tweet in time, come on down!) Many of Fresh’s suppliers will be present with free tasters to show off the quality, and there will be a hamper raffle in aid of the Dame Vera Lynn Trust. L
ast year’s Billingshurst Show introduced a craft exhibition and competition. A bigger and better competition is being developed for this year’s Show with categories to enable everyone to get involved. In order to encourage a large number of entries we have decided to make entry free and the categories focus on what worked well last year. As well as individual entries we have kept the two special Group entries, which we launched last year for our local Primary Schools and Guides & Scouts. This year each school is being invited to enter a scarecrow and the Guides & Scouts a model tray campsite. The individual categories include photography, art and ceramics. Art and ceramics have a free choice of theme, while photography requires the theme ‘My Village’ (no sunsets or churches please!) We are definitely looking for that special reflection of life in a village. We have refined the Handicraft section based on what was most
Community / Food and drink
popular last year and have include a class for homemade greetings cards. Home cookery will be represented with a range of classes to cover cakes, preserves and savouries. There will be more animals than last year; the introduction of a Farmer’s market with produce and craft items and the enhanced craft exhibition set the scene for what we hope will be a truly great village show with a rural theme. We must not forget either, all the other attractions and events to keep everyone entertained come rain or sunshine. Further details of the craft competition and entry forms can be downloaded from our website: www.billingshurstshow.org.uk or picked up from The Library or Billingshurst Community Centre. We hope to see you there. And do please remember, all our profits go into supporting Rotary charities and our local scouts & guides. Loxwood Beer & Music Festival – Saturday 17th May
T
he 14th Loxwood Beer & Music Festival takes place on Saturday 17th May, 1pm-11pm, so get along to the North Hall grounds, Loxwood with your dancing shoes on! The festival this year will follow the usual format of fantastic live music, thirst quenching booze, delicious BBQ, superb raffle and fun in the sun for the kids. There will be eight bands performing again this year with the first band on stage at 2pm. Voodoo Sheiks, who play a rich cocktail of wailing, swingin’ blues mixed with the explosive energy of primal rock & roll, will kick things off followed by the very popular Pier Pressure where rocksteady and ska mixed with a little soul is the order of the day. They are an eight-piece band who will definitely entertain you. Soul Sisters then take the stage and will bring you songs of ‘love and loss’ from the great Motown era of Soul Music. Fronted by three glamorous girls, Soul Sisters bring fun and flair to any occasion. Definitely a dance opportunity! Then things get sticky… in the form of Sticky Bun! By their own admission not spring chickens… but they know a ‘choon’ of two! Possibly the oldest rockers in town! After a fabulous raffle and maybe a
quick auction, music will begin again with a very special act – The Guildford Bucket Drummers… something you’ve probably never seen before. Half Hour Hotel then takes the spotlight – an English Indie rock band formed in Brighton. With an atmospheric, full sound and a great melody, maybe some acoustic, maybe a cover or two. Half Hour Hotel released their debut single – Run from Sirens in spring 2013 and are definitely a band to watch! Spellbinder will then blow you away with influences ranging from Deep Purple to Journey – soaring keyboards, awesome guitar and big vocals. They have it all. Then finally, last but certainly not least, Iron Tyger will deliver classic 80s rock with passion and dedication. The band’s charismatic take on the fun and excitement of 80s rock, combined with a catalogue of iconic tunes has prompted sparkling responses from audiences across the UK – do not miss them! Tickets are just £10 in advance (including a free drink) or £12 on the day. Children are £5 which includes unlimited access to bouncy castles and fun activities. Under 1s are free. For further information on bands, beers and tickets see www.loxwoodbeerfestival.com Photo: Iron Tyger

Billingshurst Primary School pupils get on their bikes
ike It Initiative sees an increase of up to 30% of pupils on bikes or scooters. As a fledgling Bike It School Billingshurst Primary School has been engaging pupils and parents to build a culture of active travel to and from school and after just a few short months of involvement in the national initiative the program has gone from strength to strength. From 3rd-14th March the school was proud to take part in the nationwide Big Pedal competition, and as a result logged 1,887 journeys over the two-week period with staff noting a huge surge in pupils arriving on bikes or scooters. Since the start of the program the school has seen an increase of up to 30% of pupils regularly cycling to school, from almost zero several months ago. The children are now fundraising for a bike shelter which will be match funded by Sustrans a leading charity enabling people to choose healthier, cleaner and cheaper journeys. To celebrate this achievement, Billingshurst Primary School recently held its second Bike It Breakfast, which provided a feast for over 150 pupils
and parents thanks to the generous donation and support of Kavanagh’s Budgens, Billingshurst High Street. Pupils arrived early in the morning to enjoy a spread of cereals, fruit, muffins and pancakes. As part of the Bike It program, the School has held a number of events over the past few months to encourage and support the pupils, including assemblies on safety and the importance of Being Bright and Being Seen, and workshops on how to check your bike is safe to ride. Pupils benefited from a visit by a bike mechanic who fixed minor problems on pupils’ bikes for free. Staff and pupils have created a Bike It Crew and will continue to promote the benefits of active travel over the summer term with new activities, including guidance on how to repair punctures. D
o you enjoy spending time with children and have time to spare to offer support to an international student who attends a boarding school in the area? The children return home to their parents during the long holidays of Christmas, Easter and Summer, but require an English family to have them to stay during a couple of weekends each term and the half-term holiday. Imagine your child were attending a boarding school overseas and the reassurance you would gain from knowing a local family is supporting them, keeping you in touch with how they are getting on. This is an excellent opportunity 4 For your own children to make new friends, to learn about other countries and gain cultural understanding. 4 To fill the ‘empty nest’ when your own children have perhaps gone off to university or left home. 4 To become involved in the school life of a
young person, supporting them through attendance at school matches, concerts or parents’ evenings. 4 To build lasting friendships with international families overseas. The role is suitable for families, single parents, couples without children, retired couples with empty nests – guardian families come in all shapes and sizes. All have a common interest in offering care and support to children and teenagers from overseas. The role is voluntary, with generous expenses paid per night’s stay, as well as to cover travel, time and entertainment. "The Care Comfort Company provided the best possible care for my mother that we could have asked for. Sitting through the night with someone who is nearing end of life is hugely demanding both physically and emotionally. Tina and her team always had my mother’s best interests at heart and made it a priority to maintain her comfort and dignity at all times. Without their support we would not have been able to keep mum at home until her death. We will always owe them a debt of gratitude. JF

Canal Centre gears up for summer
W
ith spring finally arrived there has never been a better time to explore the Wey & Arun Canal and the waterway’s Canal Centre at Loxwood is now open for longer and under new supervision. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) is pleased to announce that Dave Verrall has expanded his role within the organisation and will now act as Canal Centre Supervisor, as well as continuing with his publicity and social media work and canal restoration duties. Dave has said that he is already enjoying his new volunteer role with WACT, and “Since opening in 2012, the Centre has been very successful and increasingly busy. We have new sales lines that we will be introducing this year including a new updated edition of our popular Restoration Guide. It is a great place to welcome our boat trip passengers and other visitors to the canal. The majority of my working career has
been involved with customer service and I enjoy talking to our visitors about the history of the canal, our restoration Dave Verrall progress and our exciting plans for the future of the canal. “I have been a member of the Trust for many years. I semi-retired from work a couple of years ago and I was looking for something else to keep me occupied. So I joined WACT’s Midweek Working Party team of volunteers. I enjoyed this so much that I soon became involved in other activities including helping in the Canal Centre.” Dave will work with Canal Centre Manager, Lyn Nash, and the Centre is now open from 1pm to 5pm on Tuesday and Thursdays and from 11am to 4pm at weekends. Book reviews / About the house
A Good Read May’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Bridget Jones Mad about the Boy – Helen Fielding So Bridget is back. This time with kids and without husband – not really a spoiler, unless you have been living under a rock for the last year. Mark Darcy is dead, and our heroine is left to ‘keep buggering on’ in her own inimitable fashion. Most of the headlines as the book was published last year, focused on Darcy’s demise and on the fact that Bridget has found a toyboy. It is the first of these points that sets the tone of the book, which opens four years after the event, tempering the typical comic misunderstandings that result from a return to the dating scene with a resounding sense of the intense sadness of widowhood. Mark Darcy is a constant presence, either in Bridget’s own reminiscences or in the careful efforts of others to avoid mentioning him. The format is the same as the previous two volumes, (surely there is no-one left in the country who hasn’t read them?). Bridget still counts the calories and has added an obsession with collecting Twitter followers. Some of the old faces are still there too. Jude and Tom continue to provide advice and alcohol, while Daniel Cleaver is a not-quite-reformed godfather to Billy and Mabel. And Bridget’s mum may have
retired, but is far from retiring… Of course, the plot twists may be obvious from the outset, but as ever, the fact that we genuinely care about the characters keeps us reading and keeps us involved. Some readers may never forgive Helen Fielding for spoiling our illusions that Bridget and Mark Darcy would live happily ever after, but others will find this both amusing, moving and, at times, uplifting. Maps – Aleksandra Mizielinska and Daniel Mizielinski Every home should have a good atlas – for a child there is little better than travelling the world by turning the pages. Maps is not exactly an atlas, but for any child wanting to embark on their own adventure of the imagination, it is an absolute must have. For a start it is a big book – in A3 format, almost designed for lying on the floor and gazing at. Each page covers a country, with beautiful illustrations of key cities, wildlife, landmarks and peoples. Two children from that country feature, and there are facts about languages and population. Quite simply, you could stare at each page for hours. William Morris famously said that you should have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful. This book is both. Buy it.

Brush up on your decorating skills with Austen’s Home Hardware, Billingshurst
W
ith spring here at last, now is traditionally the time to prepare for the lighter, brighter days ahead. And what better way than giving your favourite rooms a fresh coat of paint. Successful home decorating isn’t difficult and it doesn’t have to be a chore. In fact, the hardest part is often deciding on a colour scheme. But whether you’re into minimalist white, funky bold accent colours, or safe and conservative neutral tones, you’ll need the right tools for the job, so pop down to Austen’s Home Hardware in Billingshurst. As with most DIY projects preparation is everything. Making sure that walls and woodwork are in tip-top condition before you break open the paint is well worth the effort. Dents, small cracks and holes in plasterwork can be treated with quick drying fillers, while gaps around skirtings and architraves are easily filled with decorator’s caulk. Previously gloss-painted surfaces will often benefit from being lightly rubbed down with a fine grade sandpaper to provide a key for the new paint. Before painting woodwork do make sure the surfaces are free from grease, household dust and pet hair. There are many proprietary products to choose from, like sugar soap, dust sheets or masking tape, our friendly team can ensure you’re fully equipped. Good quality paint brushes are a wise investment as
cheaper brushes quite often shed their bristles, which can compromise a pristine finish. Likewise, paint rollers and pads with interchangeable heads for fast colour swaps, or working with different paint types, are not just convenient and versatile; they are also a lot easier to clean and maintain. Quality brushes, rollers and pads can give years of service but only if they are thoroughly cleaned after use. Warm soapy water is perfect for seeing off traces of emulsion and other water-based paint but oil-based paints should be cleaned in white spirit or a cleaner and rejuvenator designed to keep bristles supple. Here are a couple of handy decorating tips. First, if you want to leave a brush or roller overnight without the bother of cleaning it, simply wrap it securely in cling-film and it will be ready for use next day. Second, try stretching a strong elastic band over a paint can from top to bottom so you can wipe excess paint from your brush on it instead of against the rim. The paint will flow back into the can instead of running down the outside! You can get more helpful advice and guidance on choosing and using items from our extensive range of home decorating products when you visit us in store at Austen’s Home Hardware. We’ve all you need to make home decorating simple and rewarding. David Lobley

Little Tweeters! / About the house
War Again – The Spring Offensive Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
A
ll winter long, having scoured every green bit in the garden, the chickens had been ruling the roost. They marched all over the now empty vegetable bed scratching and pecking. The only bit they couldn’t get at was one small garlic bed that Nanny had very carefully protected. The other garlic bed and the autumn planted onion beds had been breached on several occasions and Nanny had to rearrange the netting. Now it was time for her to claw back her territory She had learned some very important lessons from her war with the chickens last summer, and so prepared the spring offensive carefully. Before doing anything at all, she stocked up on all the necessary weapons. New bamboo canes of various lengths, cleaned up all the netting and shopped for more, ground pegs, and gadgets to join the bamboo together. Next she got the rotavator out and turned the earth in the two long vege beds, one of which held the sad looking autumn onions. Apart from that area she let the chickens have a peck round. “Make the most of it, you chickens,” Nanny snarled, “it will be your last time this summer”. Then she set to work. She carefully made a cage frame of bamboo, and the steel framing from an old growhouse. She had to reinforce a couple of corners but at last it was finished. She tested it for stability and it stood up to the test. It had taken a whole morning, but the weather had been pleasant Then came the netting – a lovely long piece which fitted over the whole cage. But because it was so big, it was a bit difficult to handle and Nanny had to go to the far side of the bed to pull it down. Now, Grandad and Bill in their wisdom had put up the electric fencing for the pigs about 30cm from the far side of the vege bed, and Nanny had to creep along
a very narrow space to avoid it. Suddenly her foot slipped down the bank. To avoid being zapped by the fence, Nanny threw herself forward scraping her shin and knocking down part of the vege bed cage. She was not impressed. When she had recovered, she fixed the cage, reset the netting and weighed the edges down with branches and pieces of wood as well as some tent pegs. The vege bed looked wonderful. It looked totally and safely enclosed and Nanny hoped it really was. All six hens looked at the vege bed. They could not believe their eyes. They strutted around the vege bed looking and poking but to no avail. They could not get in. It seemed impregnable. Satisfied with her morning’s work, Nanny packed up, went inside and had her lunch and a well earned siesta. When next she looked the vege bed had NOT been breached. But knowing the hens’ determination, she left it for a week, to make sure. But the chickens had not got in. The autumn onions started to look much happier so Nanny decided to plant the spring onions. She got herself all organised with her dibber and sets and went to get into the cage. One small problem: the cage was only a metre high. So she had to crawl under the cage on her hands and knees and then plant all the onion sets (about 150 of them) on her hands and knees. It took a long time and she of course had an audience. She could almost hear them sniggering at her. But as she crawled out again and replaced the netting Nanny was very sure that this year’s onion crop would not have to fight the chickens for survival – well at least she hoped so. Then she started on the next bed… Yvonne Fleece Photo: Grahame Pearson

Garden Tweet!
A thorny issue!
W
hatever your opinion of roses, there’s no denying that this flower is the epitome of traditional English gardening, and maybe for some that’s just the problem. For some people the memories of insipid flowers sitting above leggy stalks and diseased leaves is enough to put them off ever planting another rose bush again. Classified as a woody perennial, with over a hundred species it is still by far one of Britain’s favourite plants. Native to China, the humble rose grows well in our climate, where the cool moist winters and warm (ish) summers mean that as long as we don’t experience too much rain (which can cause petals to fuse together before fully opening) plants should live happily for many years. That said, they are not ‘forever plants’ and should not be held on to for sentimental reasons. I’ve removed no end of beds planted up in the ’sixties with nothing more than clumps of baked clay soil as their companion. Roses are best planted bare root between November and February but are most often purchased containerised when in flower during the summer months. If well watered in their first year, roses planted this way should establish well. Plant slightly deeper than you think you need, burying the graft (woody knuckle) fractionally below the soil. Humans are not the only admirers of roses and they can suffer from numerous pests and diseases so prepare yourself for battle.

Problems include: brown scale, rose aphids, rose leafrolling sawfly, rose dieback, rose powdery mildew, rose blackspot and rose rust. That said, there are disease-resistant varieties, and prevention is always better than cure. If planted in good soil (they don’t mind heavy clay) and in a well prepared hole with some homemade compost or manure, then fed in March with a special rose fertiliser before another layer of compost or manure is placed on top, and watered well they will provide you with a long lasting combination of colour and scent. For added interest, why not grow two varieties together which complement each other, or flower at different times for lengthier impact. On a sunny wall try Rosa ‘Blush Noisette’, a great repeat flowerer with small double pink flowers; ‘Lady Waterlow’ for silky pink blooms and healthy foliage; ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ for exquisite scent; or ‘Etoile de Hollande’ for a splash of rich scarlet. Ground cover roses such as the ‘flower carpet range’ are great for covering banks and are extremely low maintenance, or try an avenue of standard roses such as ‘Winchester Cathedral’ which look fabulous when underplanted with lavender or lush low-growing evergreens. Finally for a wonderful thornless variety try Rosa ‘Mortimer Sackler’. Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net Photo: Village Tweet garden rose by Grahame Pearson

Moody mares
T
here is an old saying that goes, “Tell a gelding, ask a mare and discuss it with a stallion”. And most mare owners will tell you that is absolutely right! Mares can be like Marmite and some riders either love them or hate them! We have to remember that when dealing with mares that we are dealing with an entire animal whose hormones are doing as nature intended and preparing the mare to find a mate and become pregnant with a foal ensuring the next generation. While the majority of mares are easily manageable during their seasons some may become very irritable and difficult to manage and when in season (oestrus) some become difficult to ride, show poor competition performance and can even show extreme stallion-like behaviour as well as colic-like symptoms during ovulation and many will squirt urine frequently especially in the presence of geldings. Many mares also become more vocal with frequent squealing and whinnying to other horses. Dealing with mares’ seasons can become more difficult if the mare is competing regularly as she may show tension, lack of concentration and an unwillingness to go forwards when in oestrus. The oestrus cycle (season) of a mare lasts approximately 18-24 days from spring until autumn, although a small number of mares, typically Arabs and throughbreds, can have seasons all year round. During the 3-5 days that the egg is released from the ovary is when the mare is deemed ‘in season’ and is receptive to the stallion. The hormone cycle is controlled by the length of daylight. The first season of the year can often be the most uncomfortable for the mare making life more difficult for her owner. Fillies can start their seasons from between 12 and 24 months of age. Owners need to be sympathetic to mares when they are in season, some studies suggest that they can suffer from pain and discomfort during ovulation, mares showing these symptoms will often resent being tacked up or groomed on these days as well as being unwilling to work. Handle the mare in a quiet and tactful manner taking extra care when grooming around her tail and flanks. There is hope though and there are many things you can do to help your mare if she is uncomfortable when in season. There are many feed supplements aimed at hormonal mares on the market. Many contain chasteberry;
this plant is believed to act on the pituitary gland helping to suppress the hormones during a season. Other herbs such as chamomile and valerian are believed to be mild sedatives and may help to calm the mare if she is feeling irritable. You may have to try a few different herbal supplements until you find the one that suits your mare best. You are advised to check that the supplement that you choose is not banned by the governing body of any equine sport you may compete in. Some mare owners have reported sucess with alternative therapies such as Aromatherapy and Reiki. If the mare doesn’t respond to herbal supplements you may want to ask your vet about Regumate. It mimics the hormone progesterone which is produced during pregnancy and prevents the mare from coming into season (oestrus). It must be used under strict veterinary direction and gloves must be worn when handling Regumate. Your vet will also be able to carry out a proper examination of your mare which may involve a scan of her ovaries to rule out cysts, tumours or any other reason for excessive hormonal behaviour. The main drawback of Regumate is that it is expensive for long-term use. Another treatment is to implant a marble into the mare’s uterus. The marble is a 35mm glass ball and mimics early pregnancy preventing the mare from coming into season again. This procedure carries a risk of infection and may possibly affect future fertility; your vet can discuss all the options with you. The most drastic action of all is surgical removal of the ovaries; this is not a procedure to be undertaken lightly and is only carried out in exceptional circumstances. There is also the risk that the hormonal behaviour will remain as hormones will also be produced by the adrenal gland. Having said all that, many mare owners will testify that once you gain your mare’s trust and you respect her, she will respect and trust you and will be one of the most loving and loyal equine companions you could ever wish to have. ‘Auf Wiedersehen my Pet’ visits Little Russets Nursery in Slinfold
L
ittle Russets Nursery in Slinfold were thrilled to be invited to appear in the new TV show Auf Wiedersehen My Pet which was shown last month on ITV1. The brand new series followed the plight of pet owners who needed to rehome their pets and were searching for perfect new homes for their much-loved animals. And that’s where Little Russets came in… The children at Little Russets were introduced to two lively young rabbits called Fudge and Smudge and after spending a fun and exciting afternoon with them waited with baited breath to see if they would be chosen, from three potential homes, to become the proud new owners of two beautiful rabbits.
Luckily they did not have to wait long before they received the good news! The rabbits now live happily in Little Russets’ stable block where the children can visit them in their safe and warm environment. Billingshurst Primary School celebrate their sewing star
I
t seems the latest series of The Great British Sewing Bee has captured the nation’s interest but no-one has followed the results of the competition more closely than the pupils and staff of Billingshurst Primary School. On 1st April, the School’s very own sewing star, Lynda Lewis, took part in the semifinals. After battling with three other contestants for a place in the final and undertaking a particularly difficult set of challenges, Lynda left the competition in fourth place. Pupils are now helping Mrs Lewis to celebrate her success on the programme and enjoy her new celebrity status. The School has watched each week with great pride as Lynda has become something of a national treasure, demonstrating her sewing skills, creativity and sense of fun. One pupil from Year 6 said, “We knew Mrs Lewis could go far in the competition; it’s been brilliant to watch her on TV.” Mrs Lewis has worked at the School since it became an amalgamated Primary School in 2011
as a learning support assistant, helping children with special needs. She also runs a sign class, and is regularly enlisted to help the children sign during school performances. Recently Lynda set up an after-school knitting club which is proving very popular. The class enables the children to try their hand at creating garments from wool. Helen Williamson, Headteacher comments, “Mrs Lewis has always been a star to us but it is fantastic to see her talent being celebrated at a national level. Her work with the children is both inspiring and unique, giving our pupils the opportunity to learn from one of Britain’s best home sewers.” Billingshurst Primary School will be hosting ‘An Evening With Lynda Lewis’ (see panel below) If you receive this issue of Village Tweet in time (we appreciate timing is tight) please come along. The end of XP – it’s not really the end of the world…
M
Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services
icrosoft, in its wisdom, and some might say in its never-ending search for world domination, has decided to end support of its most popular (and by this we mean widely used) operating system XP (and along with it Office 2003). What does this mean? Well for starters, to those who aren’t sure what an operating system is, it’s the piece of software than runs your computer and 30% of the world’s internet-connected desktop computers are still running XP, despite Windows 7 and Windows 8 having since been released. It’s true, XP has been around for a long time (since 2001 actually), but there’s nothing much wrong with it and that’s why so many people still use it. But, as of 8th April, Microsoft will no longer be issuing any security updates for XP. You’ll still be able to download and update patches up to this date, but if a new flaw or hole in the operating system is discovered, it will go unpatched. Potentially, this means that hackers could target the new flaw, letting them infect a Windows XP machine. As time goes on, more and more critical security holes will be found, and attackers will have free reign to exploit them. Smart attackers are likely waiting to exploit holes they already know about. And software developers will eventually stop supporting Windows XP, just as they no longer
; ^ R P [ 8 C b d__^ a c h ^ d R P ] c a db c
support Windows 98, creating even more attack vectors. The first thing to do is make sure you have up-todate antivirus/security software on your XP machine. Then, if you use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, it’s really time to let go. Google Chrome will continue supporting XP and therefore IE8 until at least April 2015, while Mozilla Firefox has no announced plans to stop supporting it at all. So switch to Chrome or Firefox and you’ll have a secure, modern browser. Additionally, other out-of-date bits of software can create security holes hackers can exploit. For this reason, you need to make sure that you keep all software completely up-to-date. Device drivers have also been known to contain security flaws, which can be exploited, so it’s important to keep these updated, too. There are free tools available, such as Device Doctor. However, unless there’s a massive vulnerability that security software can’t protect against, Windows XP should still have a long life in front of it. But at some point you’ll find that new hardware and software won’t support the OS, and updates stop coming. However, until that day you probably don’t need to upgrade, unless you want to. New family solicitor joins Anderson Longmore & Higham with Bevis Rowntree
W
e are pleased to announce that Lauren Waterton has joined the firm and will be responsible for assisting clients with divorce and family law matters at our Billingshurst and Storrington offices. Lauren is an experienced family solicitor and member of Resolution. She understands that clients are often experiencing times of personal transition and stress and will tailor her legal advice and representation to a client’s particular circumstances and needs. Lauren believes that it is generally better for clients and their families if disputes can be dealt with sensibly and amicably outside of the Court arena wherever possible and is supportive of Mediation and the Collaborative approach which form an integral part of the firm’s family law service. That said, she recognises that Court proceedings can be necessary and is experienced in representing

clients in various family applications. Edward Cooke, Partner and Head of the Family Department, said the firm is pleased to be welcoming Lauren. “We are delighted that our family department is developing across West Sussex and that Lauren will be dedicated to offering family law services at our Billingshurst and Storrington offices. She is committed to the constructive and conciliatory approach championed by Resolution and embraced by our existing family department in order to guide our clients through difficult times in a dignified manner.” Lauren has recently moved to the area and is looking forward to getting to know the local community around Billingshurst and Storrington. You can contact Lauren on 01903 745666 or lcw@alhlaw.co.uk
Welcome to the first page in the Village Tweet from Billingshurst Parish Council. The Council would like to start its first article in the magazine to discuss the theme of communication. The publisher of the Council’s quarterly newsletter is unable to continue offering this service, but the Parish Council is always considering ways in which it can communicate its work to our electorate. The Parish Council has five noticeboards in the parish: these can be found at the Billingshurst Centre, the Village Green in the High Street opposite Newsbox, Jengers Mead by Pet Doctors, Adversane Hall and Five Oaks. The Council has a website at www.billingshurst.gov.uk. Here you can find our meeting agendas and copies of minutes.
