ith the weather getting warmer there is of course an exponential increase in activities as a flick through this issue will prove. Many of these are in aid of very worthy charities. I know many readers go through the magazine as soon as it arrives and make a note on their calendars of events which appeal to them – a very good plan as it is otherwise easy to accidentally miss an event. A popular event every May is the Loxwood Beer & Music Festival. With profits going to Loxwood Pre-School (a very worthy charity) this is one of many May events not to miss. Full details on page 6. I love spring and into summer, I often threaten my children that when they move off to their own places one day they might find I decide to move somewhere warmer. Like many of us I fall into that bracket of loving England, particularly this little spot of ours in West Sussex, but I do like the warm, or at the very least a proper season! So seasonally in house moving we fees because for me that removes are finally starting to see a shift! what it is that makes us different As I write we have ended a very here at Cubitt and West. Here at the Billingshurst branch of Cubitt and West our aim is to be the first choice in the village. That’s it. First choice. It means everything we do either has the power to take us closer to or further away from that aim. It’s not always easy to know which you are doing as you cannot please all of the people all of the time even with the best endeavours and intentions one can muster, though we certainly try. However we can help you, whether your experience of buying and selling houses in the past has been good or bad, we’d be delighted to hear from you and make sure it’s good this time. Whichever you are, a buyer, a seller or both, we want to help. If you want to be in the best position possible to get the most benefit from the shift for you and your family, now’s the time to start talking!

Five greens Lasagne Lasagne with a springtime twist
METHOD
1. Half fill and boil the kettle. 2. Pour a little oil from the anchovies (if using) into a thick-bottomed saucepan and place on a medium heat. If not using anchovies use a tablespoon of olive oil. Finely slice the spring onions and half of the anchovies and then add them to the saucepan. 3. Crush the cloves of garlic into the pan and fry until soft but not too coloured (burnt garlic is bitter). 4. Snap the woody ends from the asparagus and discard. Finely slice the remaining stems asparagus into 1.5cm pieces. Break the broccoli into small florets of a similar size and add both broccoli and asparagus to the pan with a splash of boiling water from the kettle. After five minutes, add the peas and broad beans along with a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir well. Roughly chop the mint leaves then add them to the saucepan along with the cream. Grate in the zest of the lemon to taste. 5. When the vegetables are soft, use a potato masher to mash some of the filling to create texture. Add the vegetable stock; bring to the boil before lowering to a simmer and adding half the cottage cheese. Give everything a good stir and cook for a few more minutes. 6. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Take the vegetables off the heat and spoon around one third to a half of the mixture into a deep lasagne dish (approx dimensions 20cm x 15cm). Top with a lasagne sheet and a generous grating of parmesan cheese. Repeat the layers of vegetable and lasagne sheets until you have used all of the filling and then top with a final sheet. I prefer

News round-up from Billingshurst Wine Circle

ecember and it was our Christmas dinner organised and cooked superbly by the committee, and served by the Scout Active Support Unit. We really appreciate their help which basically means that we do not have to lift a finger on the night. We had a couple of festive quizzes and a raffle, and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all. January and The Circle was overwhelmed by 47 members and guests coming to listen to Colin Nicholson from Hennings give an excellent talk and tasting on Organic and Bio Dynamic wines. I suppose we should have expected a large turnout as Colin is always a very popular speaker and it was a pleasure to welcome some guests from the former Weald Wine Club. February and we were treated to new variation on wine tasting introduced by Liz Bryder and Catherine Stocker. Thirty six members were given seven wines in a blind tasting, each had a question with a multiple choice answer. With every answer came a letter, and, if correct, the letters could be

rearranged to make a wine related word: ‘Chablis’. Good fun was had by all. In March, the Circle welcomed another very popular speaker, George from Majestic Wines. His theme on this visit was West European wines – we tasted Italian Prosecco and Valpolicella, Spanish Albarino and Rioja, and French Picpoul de Pinet, Rosé and Claret. Bread and cheese was provided at the break by our fabulous Social Secretaries, Monica and Hilary. This month, on 13th May, we have a Wine Whist Night; the 10th June meeting will have a talk and tasting by Hepworth’s Brewery while on the 9th July we hold our barbecue. New members are always welcome. The Circle meets on the 2nd Friday of each month (except August) in St Gabriels Hall, East Street, at 8pm. St Catherine’s Hospice chosen as Barns Green Half Marathon charity
S
t Catherine’s Hospice has been selected as the charity partner for this year’s Barns Green Half Marathon. Sponsorship money and car-park donations will help the local hospice raise funds for their vital work. Taking place on 25th September, Barns Green is a half marathon not to be missed, and was voted 14th best half marathon in the country by Runners World. As reported in April’s Village Tweet, this year, for the first time, there will be a brand new 10km race and the organisers are hoping the race will be bigger and better than ever before. Run on closed roads through beautiful Sussex countryside, the half marathon starts at Barns Green Village Hall on Muntham Drive, before passing through Horsham’s historic Christ’s Hospital school. Runners can enjoy music throughout the course and at the finishing line from live bands and, following the race, are invited to relax and enjoy tea, cakes and family friendly entertainment on the village green. Vernon Jennings, Committee Chairman and Race Director of the Barns Green Half Marathon said, “St Catherine’s was an obvious choice for our charity partner as it’s a cause close to people’s hearts. Many of us in the village have personal experience
of or know someone who has benefited from St Catherine’s specialised end-of-life care and we’re thrilled to help support their work and make sure that others receive the same kind of care in future.” Michaela Clements, Event Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said, “We’re delighted to be working with Barns Green and are really grateful to them for choosing us as their charity partner. The money raised from their half marathon will make a real difference to terminally ill people in Barns Green and beyond. We’re looking forward to September already!” Runners will also have the chance to win cash prizes for donning fancy dress and there’s a £250 cash prize up for grabs if someone beats the present course record of one hour, four minutes and twenty eight seconds – so there really is everything to run for! All runners will receive a medal and goody bag for their efforts as well as free parking, with donations to St Catherine’s encouraged, and a secure place to store their bags. If you are interested in finding out more about supporting St Catherine’s, please visit www.stch.org.uk or call (01293) 447333. Laura Mitchell, St Catherine’s Hospice

Ride to the Somme – Enlist today!
his year marks the centenary of The Battle of the Somme, recognised as one of the bloodiest battles in human conflict with over one million casualties over a four-month period. At the beginning of the First World War in 1914 the British Army was a relatively small force and was increased rapidly by volunteers with often whole streets and villages seeing every available man enlist. Today cycling is a wide ranging leisure activity but in 1914 times were very different. Throughout the UK there were 15 designated cycling battalions who were absorbed into the Army Cycling Corps. Many stayed in the UK as part of home defence while others, and their bikes, headed to France and the frontline. Less expensive than motorbikes and used by most people in ordinary day life, the cycle was an everyday reconnaissance and communication weapon in the fight against the enemy. Of the 15 cycling battalions one was from Sussex: The Royal Sussex Regiment. Local cycling battalions were formed in Purfleet and Brighton in 1914. Many of the cyclists were transferred to other Sussex Battalions. The ‘pals’ battalions of the Royal Sussex – the South Down battalions, or ‘Lowther's Lambs’ – suffered terrible casualties on 30th June 1916, 24 hours before the much better known ‘First Day on the Somme’. This was in a diversionary attack, a large scale raid launched by 39th Division at a position called the Boar’s Head, near Richebourg l’Avoue. Just under 1,100 casualties (dead, wounded and prisoners) were incurred in a fruitless attack that had no effect on the enemy’s abilities to withstand next day’s assault. The vast majority of the losses were to men from the county of Sussex. Private John Lamont, of the Army Cycle Corps, wrote home from France: “Your welcome parcel received today. The cakes were in excellent condition, and you can depend they were enjoyed, more so as we just returned from the trenches this morning about one o’clock, where we have had some hard times. Since last Saturday we have been continually on the go, biking here, marching there, back to the bikes, then off again to some other part of the line, a few hours there, then off again to some other part, and so the time has gone in, with hardly a warm meal, very little sleep, until today we have been left to ourselves. Indeed, it has not been much of a rest, as
we have all our clothing, equipment, rifle and bicycle to clean, but we don’t take that into account, and just smile through it all. By the time this reaches you I suppose you will be reading some details of the titanic battle which is raging here. We have taken our share in it, and now, as I have time to think, I am actually surprised to find myself with a whole skin. However great the British losses are, the German losses are bound to be twice the amount, not to say anything about prisoners of which I have seen hundreds in these last three days. The scenes were awful, too ghastly for description, but they will remain forever stamped on the mind.” Ride to the Somme is a three-day cycle over 200 miles which will culminate by paying respects at The Memorial to the Missing of the Somme at Thiepval which lists the 72,195 missing British and African soldiers that have no known grave. We will also pay specific respects to members of the Army Cycling Corps who are commemorated at the nearby cemetery in Pozieres. When riders ‘enlist’ they will be asked to report on the 31st August to the ‘recruiting centre’ which will be the Imperial War Museum and from there will cycle to Northern France and in particular, on the last day, visit locations where their ancestors will have fought. This event is an ideal opportunity to raise money for an appropriate charity and we will be working with SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity, who played a crucial role in World War One supporting families and soldiers upon their return home. For 130 years SSAFA have provided lifelong support to those who are serving or have ever served in our Armed Forces. We are still seeking riders to enlist. Entries will close at the end of May. Billingshurst cricketers wake from hibernation
A
s spring arrives Billingshurst Cricket Club are preparing for another exciting season… The first team begin their second campaign in the Sussex Premier League following last season’s creditable sixth place finish. We will welcome new players to the side as well as our Sri Lankan overseas professional, Dhanuska, who joins us for his fifth season. Stuart Barber will skipper the side in his third year with the club while Andy Barr returns to Billingshurst after five months of cricket over the winter in the far less glamorous setting of Perth, Australia! The second and third teams face important seasons as they look to gain promotion and keep up with the high flying first team. The ‘2s & 3s’ offer a good standard of cricket across the age range while offering opportunities for younger players to experience the men’s game for the first time. All three sides play their league cricket on Saturday afternoons with home games at Jubilee Fields. The club plan to run four youth teams this year from
U9s to U14s. The Colts train on a Tuesday evening with matches over the weekend. James, our qualified coach, will run the Tuesday sessions with the emphasis on enjoyment and participation for all levels. New young players are very welcome. Please contact Clive at cliveheyward@ whsmithnet.co.uk for more information. Following last year’s successful fixture Sussex Ladies will revisit Jubilee Fields in 2016. This year Sussex take on Middlesex Ladies in a match to be played on Monday 30th May at 11am. All are welcome at Jubilee Fields for what promises to be a well attended and enjoyable game. For anyone interested in joining the cricket club, in whatever capacity, please contact Club Captain Stuart Barber on 07713 442446, Richard on 07887 603458 (by text please) or Clive via the email address above. The Care Comfort Company You may have noticed that e Care Comfort Company has not advertised for the last few months. e company’s owner, Tina Montague, recently informed Village Tweet of the shocking news that her daughter and senior carer, Stacey, is terminally ill with cancer, incurable and inoperable melanoma, just weeks after giving birth to her second child. Treatment has begun to give Stacey more time and during this period Tina is dedicating herself to supporting Stacey and her two very small grandchildren. For the time being, no new business is being taken on. All existing clients have been
allocated their own private carers made up of the team members. Tina has always been passionate about her business and says, “Selling the business or employing a manager is not an option as I am that dedicated. I will resume my service to the local community at some point in the future.” If Tina’s family business has touched your heart in any way in the past, or you wish to help her and Stacey, there is a JustGiving page with more details of Stacey’s story and how the local community can help out if they wish to. e link to the website is below or simply scan the QR code with your smart device. Horsham Canoe Club welcomes new paddlers
H
orsham Canoe Club was founded in 1986 as Forest Canoe Club as a result of its connection with Forest School in Horsham. It has recently been renamed to Horsham Canoe Club and is based at Southwater Country Park. Membership is fully inclusive ranging from children from 10 years upwards, who join as part of a family group, to quite senior paddlers. Men and women, boys and girls, are all welcome and catered for. The Club has a number of British Canoe Union (BCU) coaches able to provide training for both the BCU’s Star Awards for adults and Paddlepower awards for youngsters. The training involves both kayaks and open canoes. Club evenings will be held at the Southwater Country Park lake on every Thursday from 5th May until early September, meeting at 6.30pm. The club’s hut is adjacent to
the Cripplegate Lane/Station Road car-park. During the winter there are also fortnightly pool sessions at Cottesmore School on Sunday evenings between 5 and 7pm. In addition there are regular club trips throughout the year to cater for all tastes and abilities. These include local paddles on flat water, surfing and visits to the Thames weirs and Lee Valley Whitewater Centre (where the 2012 Olympic Games canoeing was held). Regular whitewater trips are also organised. For more information please refer to the club’s website: horshamcanoeclub.co.uk. If you would like to join us on a Thursday evening please contact us in advance (details on the website) so that we can make appropriate arrangements. Chris Davis Chairman, Horsham Canoe Club

A Good Read May’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Winter Ghosts – Kate Mosse This is an unusually short novel by Kate Mosse at just 250 pages. However, readers won’t be disappointed as Mosse once again takes us back to the South of France and the area in the Pyrenees which provided the haunting backdrop to her weightier Labyrinth novels. It is 1933, and an Englishman visits a book antiquarian in France with a strange manuscript written in the now extinct Occitan language of the region. The antiquarian is curious and wants to know how an Englishman would have it in his possession. Slowly, the foreigner tells his story. In 1928, with Europe still recovering from the aftermath of World War 1, Freddie is recovering from an illness. Still struggling to come to terms with the death of his older brother George, his doctor suggests a trip to France where the mountain air in the south may help his recovery. He is consumed by grief and guilt over George’s death and welcomes the opportunity to visit the country where his beloved brother died. A car crash during a storm in the mountains sees him stranded in the oddly deserted-looking village of Nulle. He finds lodgings and the next day is invited to attend the Fête de Sainte-Etienne, a celebration of the village’s past. It is here that he meets Fabrissa, a beautiful mysterious woman. Mosse cleverly allows us to see the psychological effects of grief. As in the Labyrinth trilogy she embeds the story in the medieval history of the Cathars (an ancient sect of Christianity, long since destroyed) in the region. Are there such things as ghosts or do we create them in our mind to deal with the events that appear doomed to reoccur throughout history? Or are ghosts merely the reminder of mistakes that we are condemned to repeat?
Cloudberry Castle: Ballet School Secrets – Janey Louise Jones This is the second book in the Cloudberry Castle series. The first introduced ballet-mad Katie and her family. Following the death of their elderly neighbour the Mackenzie family find themselves the owners of Cloudberry Castle. The crumbling building could be beautiful and the book follows Katie and her family as they raise enough money to turn it into a new ballet boarding school. At the start of this second book the school is about to open. Katie’s mother is a dancer with the New York City Ballet and has spent the last few months planning classes, ordering costumes, and holding auditions, while her dad has been hard at work transforming the rooms into ballet studios, classrooms, and dormitories. When September arrives Katie is in heaven. She gets to dance all day and soon makes friends with some of the other girls. Her mum is planning to stage Sleeping Beauty at the end of the year and Katie would love to play Princess Aurora. However, one of the new students, Leo, seems to be about to put a dampener on things. She arrives with a private chauffeur and pony and clearly thinks she is better than everyone else. Katie begins to worry that she is not as good at ballet as she thought she was. Can she win the role of Princess Aurora? Combined with a discovery in the grounds of Cloudberry Castle which may well reveal some longhidden secrets, this novel is perfect for a young ballet fan. Katie is a very likeable narrator and Jones is an engaging writer. This is aimed at readers aged 8+ and its 141 pages are split into 28 manageable chapters for young readers looking to gain more confidence.

show. Also a big thank you to Village Tweet who promoted the event for me free of charge. The ad helped swell the numbers immensly! And from Grahame Pearson, Editor of Village Tweet: “The very first ‘single’ I bought back in 1973 for the princely sum of 60p was David Bowie’s Life on Mars (I still have it) so there was no way I was going to miss Stephen’s tribute show. (Though Life on Mars was one of the few Bowie classics not performed on the night. Maybe next time!) “Stephen’s performance was superb and I came away knowing I’d seen and heard something very magical. And to hear how much this talented lad had raised for Macmillan – a charity Village Tweet has long supported – was the icing on the cake. Well done, Stephen!” Terri Ashpool Macmillan Billingshurst Support Group Photo: Macmillan’s Terri Ashpool, Pam Goldsmith and Ann Roberts with Stephen Foster (see also front cover)

tephen Foster from Billingshurst (you probably know him from Austens in the village) has been doing a David Bowie tribute act for some time now and when his Dad sadly passed away last year from cancer Stephen decided he wanted to help raise some money for the local Macmillan group. So, Stephen took it upon himself to organise a charity concert not just for his father but also for his hero David Bowie who passed away in February. This was held at the Village Centre on Saturday 26th March. As well as Stephen’s act there was Rob Nichol singing swing and Richard Sharp with some great rock classics. The event was well attended and the Macmillan ladies held a raffle in the interval. The total raised was an amazing £820. Due to the success of this event Stephen hopes to arrange another later in the year. Stephen says: “I’m amazed at the £820 total which even includes donations from some people unable to come to the show! I”m so happy with this. I’d like to thank everybody who came to see the

Equine / About the house
Be clear about strangles
T
here have been a few outbreaks of strangles so far in 2016. This disease is common and can be very serious, it is also a cause of huge financial losses in the equine industry due to cancellation of shows and competitions and loss of income for riding schools. Strangles is probably the most feared and misunderstood disease on the part of horse owners. Although a reasonably common disease, caused by bacteria called Streptococcus Equi, it is not a notifiable disease. Strangles is spread by contact such as sharing feed and water buckets, tack, grooming equipment as well as being on human hands and clothing and by horses in direct contact with each other. Strangles is NOT airborne – a common misconception. The first signs of strangles are a quiet, depressed horse with a high temperature and lethargy; he may be off his food and later will develop a thick yellow nasal discharge. Painful abscesses form in the throat area around the lymph nodes giving the disease its name. Call the vet straight away to get diagnosis if you suspect your horse may be infected. How severely the horse is affected can depend on a number of things such as age, with young horses being most susceptible to developing large abscesses in and around the lymph nodes and Glutteral pouches, as the lymph nodes are part of the immune system. Young horses may not have built up the same resistance to disease as an adult horse. The incubation period for strangles is 3-10 days and the disease tends to last around three weeks if left untreated; it’s important to quarantine all new arrivals to a yard for a minimum of two weeks although in practice this doesn’t often happen. Complications can also occur in strangles cases leading to the formation of abscesses in other organs around the body which can prove fatal. Barrier nursing is seen as the best treatment to encourage the bursting of the abscesses. This can be achieved by using hot packs applied to the area or they can be lanced by a vet, anti-inflammatory pain relief will be prescribed by your vet but antibiotic therapy is controversial and is decided on a case-by-case basis. Horses testing positive to the disease should be isolated in a specific area and a disinfectant foot bath put in.
People dealing with infected horses must change all outer clothing and wash their hands before coming into contact with uninfected horses. Make people such as farriers and deliverymen aware there is strangles on the yard so they can make you their last call to help prevent spread of the disease to other yards. Even if you are one of the lucky ones and your horse isn’t affected don’t go hacking or attend any shows until the vet has given your yard the all clear to resume normal activities. The majority of horses infected with the disease develop immunity but around one in ten former strangles suffers can appear completely healthy while still carrying the bacteria. These ‘carriers’ can shed bacteria intermittently for months or even years causing an on-going risk to other horses; these animals need to be identified usually by taking swabs and a blood test and infected animals will undergo a glutteral pouch wash to remove the nodules of pus which harbour the bacteria. Unfortunately there is a real stigma about the disease among horse owners. Livery yards fear they could lose business and owners fear being thought of as somehow unclean. In fact the disease can be controlled much more quickly and effectively through people being open and honest if the disease makes an appearance on their yard. Once strangles is confirmed there should be no movement of horses on or off the property until all equines on the premises are tested clear of the disease. Although there was a story of a racehorse trainer who would take a ‘dirty cloth’ and wipe the nose of each and every horse on his yard if he had an outbreak with the theory behind this being the quicker they all get exposed the quicker they get over it! Probably not the done thing today! A vaccine for strangles is now available just ask your vet for advice. Hopefully you will not be affected by this horrible disease but by talking openly about it and keeping others informed if there is an outbreak will help break down barriers and put a ‘stranglehold’ on the spread of strangles. Horsham Matters shop now open in Jengers Mead
H
orsham Matters have taken a short-term licence on a shop unit in Jengers Mead, Billingshurst (next to Pet Doctors) and opened its doors on 1st March. “For some time now we’ve been looking to open shops elsewhere in the Horsham District” says Guy Sherlock, Horsham Matters’ Retails Director. “Our focus has always been the whole of the District; we already have a youth worker in Billingshurst and have previously run a foodbank in the village, so this is great opportunity for us to try something different.” As well as providing a mix of household goods and furniture the shop will also be a gateway to the services Horsham Matters provide under the Local Assistance Network and the Horsham District Foodbank. “Not only will customers be able to access good quality goods at reasonable prices but any local residents who are in crisis will be able to contact us through the shop to get help with furniture, white goods, fuel vouchers and food,” explains Guy. As well as being a partner in the Local Assistance Network and running Foodbank Horsham Matters also manages the Horsham Churches Night Shelter, delivers the Community Youth Work Programme and runs the
Mocktail Apprentice Programme in local schools. Local Youth Worker, Ben Sheldon works for both St Mary’s Church and Billingshurst and Pulborough Parish Councils running the Billingshurst Youth Club on Tuesday evenings in Jubilee Fields, UNite at St Marys on a Friday evening and working in The Weald School. Horsham Matters also has Community Fund, which provides grants to local organisations delivering community projects across the District. “The funds we generate from sales in our shop will help us deliver even more services into our local communities,” says Guy. “Our aim is not to take away from other existing local shops but to offer something new and provide a wider access to services”. The new shop is now looking for volunteers. If you can help please contact Guy Sherlock at Horsham Matters on 0300 124 0204 or via email at guy.sherlock@ horsham-matters.org.uk. More information on the positions and an application form can be found at www.horsham-matters.org.uk/about/vacancies. Guy Sherlock, Retails Director, Horsham Matters

Sussex greening initiative goes global
A
l Gore, former US Vice President and Nobel Laureate, invited West Sussex resident Carrie Cort to join him in the Philippines on his Climate Reality Leadership Corp training programme. Carrie – winner of the BBC Surrey and Sussex Community Hero Green Champion Award in November 2015 and initiator of the greening network, Sussex Green Living – attended this training event in Manila in March. The founder and chairman of the Climate Reality Project, Al Gore, renowned climate scientists and communicators deliver a three-day programme with people who are passionate about taking action to change the unsustainable way in which we are living. Carrie said, “I feel so honoured to have been chosen to train with Al Gore, his team and 700 dynamic delegates from all over the world, four from the UK. It was a life changing experience which I would recommend anyone really wants to help Planet Earth and all who live on it.” She continued, “They take great leaders and makes them exceptional, providing the training in climate science, communications, and organising to tell the story of climate change and inspire communities everywhere to take action. To date they have trained some 10,000 people in 130 countries.”

Attendees ranged from seasoned community leaders, concerned parents, business executives and university students; the youngest attendee was a twelve-year-old boy. Climate Reality Leaders come from all walks of life, they all have one thing in common: a deep desire to make a difference and help solve the climate crisis. The programme gives attendees the knowledge and tools to change the world. In January Carrie was introduced to Jenny Edwards, another West Sussex resident who attended the Climate Reality Training in Miami in September 2015. On completion of the programme the aim is for attendees to go and share the knowledge, through presentations, talks, informal gatherings with their chosen audiences. Jenny and Carrie are teaming up to offer talks together. To arrange for a Climate Reality talk in your community, group, business or school contact Carrie on cort@sussexgreenliving.co.uk. New Wey and Arun Canal bridge opens
V
olunteers and contractors met a tight deadline to get an important new canal bridge opened to traffic. Vehicles began using Compasses Bridge, at one of the entrances to the Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex, on schedule on Thursday, 31st March. The bridge, at Alfold, is a strategic part of the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s restoration policy. It is replacing an ageing concrete causeway which blocks the waterway. The entrance road to Dunsfold Park was successfully realigned over the Easter weekend, completing phase one of the Trust’s Compasses programme. Chartered civil engineer Tony Ford, a Trust director, is in charge of the project. “Our volunteers and visiting groups worked tirelessly to achieve the critical date for the road changeover,” he commented. “It needed to happen on time to mesh with the aerodrome’s busy events schedule.” Volunteers, among them specialists from the Waterway Recovery Group, worked with contractors CJ Thorne on the realignment and surfacing, moving the road off the 1930s causeway. Work on the project, which includes reopening nearly a mile of the canal’s Summit Level to navigation, began in earnest 15 months ago and was first reported in Village Tweet, September 2014 with several updates
since then. Phase two – demolition of the causeway, re-creation of the canal cut and landscaping – was scheduled to start in mid-April so should be underway when you read this. Volunteers are now cladding the bridge’s sides and training walls in bricks and completing the paving on the bridge surface. “The bridge opening is a major achievement, particularly for all the people who have given their time to get the realignment completed on schedule,” said Trust chairman Sally Schupke. “We are now looking forward to seeing boats being able to use the canal and the area developing as part of our aim to create a green corridor from the River Arun to the River Wey Navigation.” The Trust plans to officially open the new bridge and restored canal section on Sunday, 2nd October. It will be one of the locations for celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Wey & Arun Canal from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford in Surrey. Rob Searle, Press and Publications Officer www.weyandarun.co.uk Photo: One of the first vehicles to cross the new Compasses Bridge on 31st March 2016
Opportunities to help with award-winning canal restoration A canal charity needs volunteers to support its growing number of restoration projects. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust is looking for help from people who can take on various administration roles. It particularly needs volunteers to help with restoration support and publicity, which are vital roles as more and more canal is restored. The Trust was formed in the 1970s to restore the canal from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford in Surrey. It has active projects at three sites along the 23-mile route, with work on other sections in various stages of planning. National awards have been won for the new High Street bridge and lock at Loxwood and the Loxwood Canal Centre. “We have had enormous success in fully restoring various sections and the rate of progress is increasing,” said Trust chairman Sally Schupke. “More restoration help is needed and we have a number of vacancies, mostly involving working from home.” Anyone interested in filling one of the roles should email us at: support@weyandarun.co.uk

Biological warfare!
I
’m a huge fan of biological warfare. But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I’m not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners. Ladybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5,000 of them! Ladybird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don’t be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphideaters. Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses. The beautiful song thrush is in decline, but it loves to eat slugs and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison based on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%. Frogs and toads are great slug-eaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond; it really doesn’t

have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground. Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself. The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of pre-packed nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites which are watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10°C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies it is then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips. All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment. Of course, with organic gardening you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful… Rachel Leverton

Sheep! John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
I
have at oft times mentioned the odd memory that has sprung to my mind regarding our little woolly friends. I refer here to sheep… not unshaven menfolk! While most of us enjoy the sight of these creatures dotting the hills and meadows and watching their lambs gamboling with the pure enjoyment of life, there is something about these animals that divides many farmers into two distinct camps… To the full-time shepherd they are his or her family. They are more than their stock or their job. They are part of their lives that gets into their very existence. Watch a shepherd at work. They know their charges completely; they anticipate their moves and understand the way each individual thinks and acts. They love them completely. Now, ask the farmer who has had sheep under his care over the years but at the same time has also had other animals that can make up the farming menagerie The farmer who has what you might call ‘dabbled’ in sheep. Who’s had a flock of a hundred or so ewes for a few years and then perhaps moved on to other beasties. He – like me – may have a more tempered view of these creatures. Why? Let me elaborate… Sheep, as I believe I have said before, have for most of the year only one aim in life – to end it! They have a death wish built into their very being. They are by nature the most skittish of farm animals. This is the reason that we ask folk to be so very careful with their dogs when they are near a flock. Sheep are primed to recognise any dog as a wolf and their flight instinct will kick in so violently that a stampede of terrified animals can rapidly cause horrific injury and often result in the abortion of their lambs as well. If there is a fold in the field from an ancient plough furrow some member of the flock is sure to roll on her back into it and, if not found quickly, succumb to bloat and pass on to pastures new. They will willingly push through any hedge to get to a barren ploughed field, leaving a lush grass laying behind them, or tangle themselves in a blackberry bush that will require substantial damage to arms and legs while freeing it, all,
38
apparently, just because they can. They are susceptible to a multitude of ailments and there is a veritable army of worms, ticks and creepy-crawlies that are queuing up to leap on or burrow into them. Well, so it seems anyway! Most visible of these of course is the horrendous damage of fly strike. This occurs when a fly lays its eggs on a dirty part of the sheep’s fleece and the hatching maggots start to eat their way into the poor animal’s flesh undetected by the casual observer. Farmers have to trim this fouled wool off the flock members in a process known as dagging. A lovely back breaking and aromatic job in the heat of a summer day! Then of course there’s their feet. Sheep are really hill and mountain creatures. Their tiny hooves are designed to be constantly worn and cleaned by climbing over the rocks and course vegetation of such an environment, not the soft sticky clay of our lowlands. As a result, unless great care is given to their manicure treatments, they can suffer from foot rot and overgrown feet. This, of course, means more back breaking work by sitting them on their backsides (once they are sitting up on their bottoms they become almost comatose – with luck!) while treatment is carried out. All these problems sum up the reason that I made my first statement regarding the two camps that sheep fall into. However, once they have lambed a whole new world appears. There is nothing more endearing in the world than new born lambs. Their sheer joy of living lifts the heart and brings spring to the soul. To see a hundred or more lambs skipping and leaping around a field in wild abandonment while their mothers look on with clear bewilderment verging on disdain, is worth all that hard work. Then, when the mothers think enough is enough their array of voices sound off and somehow in just a few minutes every lamb has found its mum and the field is full of tails waiving violently in the air as they fill their bellies with mum’s milk. So, if you can spare a few minutes, stop and watch that field of woolly creatures. They are so familiar to the scene that we rarely take the time to really look and try to understand what they mean to the men and women who care for them. Whatever feelings they generate, it would be a poorer land without them! Photo: Grahame Pearson John Nash

Schoolchildren enjoy the wonderful world of words
E
ven the BFG (Roald Dahl’s Big Friendly Giant) would be impressed with the children of Billingshurst Primary School this week as they became master wordsmiths, creating some impressive ‘Gobblefunk’ (the BFG’s unique language) worthy of any giant. The children raised over £700 in the ‘Word in a Word’ competition. The fundraiser, sponsored by JML Law Solicitors in Pulborough, set pupils the challenge of finding as many words as possible, and best anagram, from the title of another fine children’s book Grandpa’s Great Escape by David Walliams. Six lucky winners received a signed copy of Walliams’ latest creation, which was presented during a special assembly. The challenge clearly inspired the pupils, with the winner from Key Stage 2, Andrew Cuthbert, finding an impressive list of 876 words. The winner from Key Stage 1 was Adam Evans with 84 words. The Best Anagram category generated some entertaining entries, with the winning anagram ‘green peas gas traps’ by Abi Smith from Year 5 was positively BFG inspired. Ruby Marr from Year 3 raised the most amount of money, with an outstanding £350 in sponsorship. The longest word uncovered was reappearances by Ellie

Lloyd in Year 4 and the most unusual winner was Lucas Rose in Year 2. Julian Lee from JML Law Solicitors commented, “We are delighted to be part of Billingshurst Primary School’s ‘Word in Word’ competition and have been extremely impressed with the entries from all pupils. It is clear that the children took the challenge very seriously, generating words worthy of any law solicitor. We are proud to support projects which underpin a fundamental appreciation of the power of words.” Helen Williamson, Headteacher at Billingshurst Primary School, added, “We are incredibly proud of the time and effort the children put into the ‘Word in a Word’ competition. Now in its second year, this competition is a wonderful way of engaging and encouraging the children to play with words and develop their vocabulary. We also hear from parents and grandparents that it’s a linguistic challenge the whole family take part in.” Kate Clifford, Billingshurst Primary School Community Association Photo shows Julian Lee of JML Law with the winning pupils with their signed David Walliams books

Nanny’s New Chair
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
N
anny sat at her computer. She was reading a freecycle advert and had just e-mailed to enquire about a lovely green chair that was being offered. The person offering the chair swiftly replied to say that Nanny could have the chair if she wanted. Nanny arranged to pick up the chair the following week. Why did Nanny need a new chair? Well it goes like this. Sometimes Anne came home very late from working in London. If you know the rail network between Billingshurst and London you will know how erratic it can be. On these occasions Nanny or Grandad had to stay on after dinner to keep an eye on the children, which wasn’t a problem except there was nowhere to sit comfortably in the dining room. “Why not sit in one of The Chair the two lounges?”, you might ask. One was the lair of Sara who watched TV alone, any interloper soon receiving short shrift. The other was the domain of the other three kids. While they didn’t mind someone coming in with them a diet of The Simpsons was certainly not as entertaining as a good book (in Nanny’s case) or a good caravan or car magazine (in Grandad’s). So Nanny decided to get a comfy chair for the already cluttered, but quieter, dining room. Hence the freecycle ad. The day arrived for The Chair to be collected. Nanny commandered Anne’s Kia ‘Kidmobile’ because it could easier accommodate The Chair. She first had to The Wall take Sara for an appointment and then Sara insisted on a McDonalds lunch so it was some time before they arrived at Goring-by-Sea where The Chair was. Nanny was tired by this time and as she was entering the driveway of the house her mobile phone rang. She stopped and looked down to see who was calling and, looking back up, unthinkingly reapplied the accelerator. Unfortunately the car had stopped almost touching the brick pillar by the entrance to the driveway and as the car drove forward again its bumper pushed the pillar backwards about ten inches.

“Oh, four-lettered word!”, Nanny roared with anguish. She backed up and stopped the car, got out and looked at the dislodged bricks. It seemed to Nanny that the bricks could simply be pushed back into place without too much bother. More worrying, there was a scrape on the front bumper of Anne’s car. “Another £200” (the usual sum for similar previous calamities), thought Nanny gloomily. The Chair was beginning to look anything but free. Anyway, The Chair was brought home and placed in the dining room. Gary walked in and looked aghast. “It’s like an old people’s home chair,” he declared unkindly. “Why did you get that?” Nanny explained why. Anne too was unimpressed. “You can’t have that there,” she stated firmly when she came home that night. By that time Nanny was almost in tears and confessed to Anne about the car. After a sleepless night, Nanny and Grandad sat down and formed a plan of action. The offending Chair was relocated within the dining room to a less obtrusive spot in the far corner and the car was booked in to be fixed. But, worst of all, was a call from The Chair’s previous owner. It turned out the brick pillar had to be completely rebuilt at a cost which made the car repair seem like small beer. But time is a great healer and now, on Anne’s late nights, Nanny or Grandad can be found luxuriating in the lovely, (and very expensive) light green, old lady’s chair. And strangely enough on some occasions Nanny has noticed The Chair being occupied by other, younger, members of the family living on that small farm near Billingshurst. (But Nanny doesn’t mind.) P.S. This was written in early April so no news yet from our ovine ladies in waiting. Hopefully I will have news next month… Yvonne Fleece Photos: Grahame Pearson and Yvonne Fleece

Horsham Council endorses new dog microchipping law
O
n 6th April microchipping became compulsory for all dogs (over 8 weeks of age) in England and Wales and owners who do not microchip their dogs can be fined up to ÂŁ500. Currently in the Horsham district, if you do unfortunately lose your dog it will probably be collected by a member of Horsham District Council as part of their stray dog service and there is a release fee. If your dog is microchipped it can be reunited with you much more quickly. Cabinet Member for Public Protection and Housing Councillor Philip Circus commented, “We welcome the new microchipping regulations as they will go a long way towards improving dog welfare by ensuring that dog owners are more aware of their responsibilities. Because microchipping enables the dog owners contact details to be kept up to date, this will ensure a speedy reunification of a missing dog with its owner. “In addition, it will add traceability of each dog’s origin which in turn will assist with improving health and welfare issues such as puppy farming. I would therefore urge all dog owners to get their dogs chipped.â€? Having your dog (or cat) microchipped is one of
the best ways to increase its chances of getting home if it is lost. Unlike tags and collars, which can fall off or be removed, microchipping is a more permanent form of identifying your dog. However, it is still a legal requirement that all dogs wear a collar and tag, with their owner’s name, address and telephone number on it. It is also that if a dog acquires a new keep, the new keeper updates the details straight away. How does it work? A tiny microchip about the size of a grain of rice is inserted under your dog’s loose skin, on the back of the neck. This gives the dog its own unique code. If your dog becomes lost or stolen, when it is found vets, local authorities and the police can easily scan the microchip and match it to your contact details, which are kept on a database. The Dogs Trust offer free microchipping by appointment at their centre in Shoreham-By-Sea. Also see www.chipmydog.org.uk/have-yourdog-chipped-for-free/free-chippinglocations-and-participating-vets. Fire-fighters Charity Car Wash a huge success!
T
hank you to everyone who came down in March for our first charity car wash of the year. We were amazed by the generosity from our local community. We even had people making us cakes and others who didn’t have time to have their car washed but still made a donation as they drove past. We raised a staggering £671.78 which goes towards The Fire-fighters Charity that looks after injured/ill firefighters and their families. This charity would not survive without fire stations holding events such as this so without you guys we wouldn’t be able to do it, so once again a huge Thank You. The past few weeks have been busy on
station. The new fire engine is certainly getting to know its new area. I’m glad to report that it has not been needed for anything serious but calls during the day and evening are keeping us out of trouble! Following our recent pieces in Village Tweet we have had a number of enquiries from potential new recruits wanting to join. We do still have a few spaces available. Would being a retained on-call firefighter suit you? A new career in which you can give something back to the community and be part of a great team on station. Come down on a Monday night from 6.30-9.30 to find out more. Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station

Project Griffin Project Griffin is an internationally-acclaimed development tool for businesses to help protect their staff and local communities from terrorism. International terrorism and domestic extremism continue to be a real threat across the UK and it is imperative that the emergency services, communities, businesses, local authorities and other agencies work in partnership to reduce the risk of becoming a terrorist target. Sussex Police is working in partnership the South East Counter Terrorism Unit on Project Griffin, a national counter-terrorism initiative. This initiative aims to protect our cities and communities from the threat of terrorism and crime and to improve communication links between Sussex Police and the community. Project Griffin aims to engage, encourage and enable members of the community to work in partnership with the police to deter, detect and counter terrorist activity and crime. Project Griffin seeks to enlist the help and support of individuals or groups responsible for the safety and security of buildings, businesses, districts or neighbourhoods. Project Griffin is coordinated by the National Counter Terrorism Security Office and delivered across the UK by its network of Counter Terrorism Security Advisors, who will provide information on how to maximise their security contribution towards the community they work in. This will include information on current threat levels, methods of
attack, how to respond to an attack and hostile reconnaissance. This encourages vigilance by employees who will feel an increased sense of responsibility by becoming part of a team committed to protecting the safety and security of their community and environment.
Aims of Project Griffin • Raise awareness of current terrorism, crime and related issues. • Share and gather intelligence and information. • Build and maintain effective working relationships. • Seek solutions to defeating terrorism and crime. • Maintain trust and confidence in the police and other authorities. • Empower people to have the confidence to report suspicious activity and behaviour.
Terrorism Threat Levels What Do They Mean? • Low – an attack is unlikely • Moderate – an attack is possible, but not likely • Substantial – an attack is a strong possibility • Severe – an attack is highly likely • Critical – an attack is expected imminently For information on current threat levels you can visit the following websites: Homeoffice.gov.uk MI5.gov.uk
Terrorism. If you suspect it, report it. Call 0800 789321 Community Warden Pilot The Community Warden initiative was a fast moving and evolving project which Councillors felt would be of benefit for Billingshurst. However, it was becoming apparent that there may potentially be an increased burden in the financing and management of the project than was initially envisaged, therefore the Council decided to withdraw from the process. The timescales were extremely tight and realisation came too late to change the precept calculation which was
submitted to Horsham District Council in January 2016. The Parish Council has resolved to put half the precept intended for the Community Warden project into a named reserve in April 2016 and the balance in September / October 2016 when the final instalment is received. This money will be available to offset any rise in precept in the financial year 2017/18 and any enquirer will be able to see it clearly as a separate item within the Council’s accounts.

Our Community Volunteers – meet Pat Homer
O
ver forty years ago when Pat Homer accepted an invitation to help out at a Guide Camp that her daughter was attending, she had no idea where the experience would lead her. Today, as a Committee Member of the Billingshurst Show, Minutes Secretary for the local Royal British Legion, Secretary for Scouts at district level, and Secretary for the Scouting and Guiding Executive in Billingshurst, as well as a Guiding helper and Break Supervisor at The Weald, she can look back on nearly fifty years of contribution to the community of Billingshurst. Pat’s background in administration and her experience as a shorthand typist proved useful in various roles but soon she found herself learning quite different skills in her role as a Guide Leader, notably camping which was a new experience for her. However, her expertise grew and soon her Guides were very proficient at pitching tents, cooking on open fires and making bed-rolls; traditional skills which are still used today, as the Unit is now run by two of her ex-Guides. However, it is her administrative skills which she
uses in her involvement with the Billingshurst Show and she is enthusiastic about the plans for this year’s event on Sunday 26th June, which kick off with a carnival procession from Jengar’s Mead and include a fly past by a World War 2 Dakota, stalls, competitions and various events in the arena (which in previous years have included everything from dancing dogs to duck herding). She tells me that the show began more than thirty years ago as a fundraising event for the Guides and Scouts; the Rotary Club became involved in later years and today it is enjoyed as a family event for the whole community. When I ask her what she enjoys most about the considerable time she still spends on voluntary work, she considers the question. “Socialising…making friends… and seeing the development of young people”. She pauses and adds, “Whatever you’re doing you can have a laugh – a safe laugh. And I have so many happy memories of it all.” Pippa Cleeve If you know someone who you feel deserves recognition in Our Community Volunteers please
