Chocolate Fondant Tart

METHOD

For the pastry: 1. Place the flour and icing sugar in a large bowl. Rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. 2. Add the egg yolk and water and mix quickly so that it comes together to form a firm dough. Wrap in cling film and leave to rest in the fridge for about 30 minutes. 3. Preheat the oven to 200°C/ Gas 6 (180°C fan). 4. Dust the work surface with flour and then roll out the pastry to form a circle about 5cm/2in larger than your flan tin. Line the tin with the pastry. Pop it into the fridge to chill for a further 15 minutes. 5. You now need to blind-bake the pastry. To do this prick the base of the pastry with a fork then line the pastry case with a circle of greaseproof paper and fill with baking beans (these are ceramic beads, but you can use lentils or dried beans if you don’t have any). Bake the pastry for 10 minutes, or until just lightly golden-brown, then remove the paper and the beans and return the tart to the oven to cook for a further 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown and dried out. For the filling: 1. Melt the butter in a medium pan over a low heat, then add the chocolate and stir until melted, smooth and glossy. Remove from the heat and beat in the sugar and flour, then beat in the eggs, one at a time. 2. Place the pastry case on a baking tray. Pour the chocolate mixture into the pastry case, filling it almost to the top then place in the oven. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until just set around the edges and still slightly wobbly in the centre. 3. Remove from the oven. You can serve it warm with raspberries or strawberries, or allow it to cool and dust with icing sugar.

Relief and delight as new Vice Chairman steps forward for the Wine Circle

W

e are delighted to report that Eddie Stevenson has agreed to become Vice Chairman of the Club, making the Circle’s future look a lot brighter. We have had three quite varied meetings with a wide selection of tastings… February saw Liz and Cat entertain us with a very social evening, giving us seven wines to try in a blind tasting. Each tasting was accompanied by a simple crossword-type clue (more of a hint actually) and once we filled in our sheets, we had to make an anagram of the highlighted letters (w, e, d, e, n, n, c, i, r, a, t, e) to come up with a wine related object. (Try it!) In March George from Majestic gave a talk on wines from the Americas. He started with a Chandon Brut and ended with an orange muscat dessert wine, sandwiching a selection of five delicious reds and whites in-between. The Circle was sad to hear that this was his last visit to us because he is leaving Majestic. We will miss him as he has been a great supporter and presenter and we wish him well in his new venture.

For April’s meeting, the circle welcomed back Richard Ambridge from Worthing for his third talk at the club. Titled ‘Spain without Rioja’, this entertaining presentation was well received by 42 members. 6 wines, 3 white and 3 red, from elsewhere in Spain, proved very enlightening – there really is more to Spain than just the Rioja region. A vote on the night made the Mas Demere Reserva Jumilla at £12.50 the favourite. Future meeting plans include a Fish ’n’ Chip supper and a trip to the new Hepworth Brewery. New members always welcome. The Circle usually meets on the 2nd Friday of each month (except August) in St Gabriels Hall, East Street, at 8pm, though February’s meeting is on the 3rd. Please see our website for details: www.billingshurstwineandbeercircle.com. Get ready to race for St Catherine’s Hospice Dragon Boat Festival

S

t Catherine’s Hospice is calling on local businesses to sign up and get ready to race as part of its popular Dragon Boat Festival. Taking place on Sunday 10th September, from 10am to 4pm at Tilgate Park, the Dragon Boat Festival is one of the local hospice’s biggest and most exhilarating fundraisers. Every year, the festival attracts thousands of spectators to cheer on racing teams, but this year instead of cheering from the shore, you and your colleagues could be in the centre of the action! The festival, which is celebrating 15 years, is a great branding, team building, and networking day out but more importantly it’s fun! Many businesses return year on year to compete with other local businesses in adrenaline-fuelled races in 40ft Chinese Dragon Boats. Darren Buche was captain of last year’s winning team, Beemer, who represented Vines Gatwick. He said, “Last year was the third year we’d taken part in St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival and we were thrilled to take the trophy. It was a fantastic day and I’d encourage any business to take part this year – although we’ll be racing hard to keep up with

the competition!” As well as being a fantastic chance for businesses to support their local hospice, the Dragon Boat Festival is a great family day out with activities, entertainment and delicious food and drink. Since the festival began, it’s raised more than half a million pounds, and made a huge difference to local terminally ill people and their family and friends. Laura Kelly, Corporate Fundraiser at St Catherine’s said, “Our Dragon Boat Festival is an oar-some corporate challenge and we can’t wait to welcome local businesses to the water. Our teams always tell us how much they enjoy being able to bring family and friends to cheer them on too, and it’s lovely to host an event that gives colleagues and their wider family and friends a chance to come together while helping our hospice.” If your business is ready to help St Catherine’s make this year’s Dragon Boat Festival the best yet, please contact Laura Kelly or Suzanne Davis in St Catherine’s Corporate Team on (01293) 447333, or visit: www.stch.org.uk and search Dragon Boat Festival. St Catherine’s Hospice raises £10 million through hospice lottery

S

t Catherine’s Hospice is thrilled that its lottery has raised £10 million since it started thanks to the support of its players. The incredible £10 million was reached during the draw on 7th April thanks to collective supporters paying £1 for each entry into the hospice’s weekly lottery over the last 18 years. Currently more than 14,000 members try their luck at winning one of 19 prizes, including the £1,000 first prize. Zoe Dolding, Individual Giving Co-ordinator at St Catherine’s, said, “I’d like to say an enormous thank you to everyone who has joined our lottery, since it started in 1998, and played their part in helping us reach our £10 million milestone. “Money raised from our lottery helps us be there to offer expert care to local people in Sussex and

Surrey when life comes full circle.” Mandie Pastars, Lottery Assistant added, “If you’re one of our lottery players you should feel really proud, as you’ve made an incredible difference to local terminally ill people at one of the hardest times of their lives. We couldn’t run our lottery without our amazing supporters and it’s really exciting that we’ve managed to raise such an amazing amount. Here’s to the next £10 million!” For more information about St Catherine’s lottery or to sign up, please visit www.stch.org.uk/lottery or call the Lottery Team on (01293) 447373. Please note, players must be 16 years old or over and terms and conditions apply. Laura Mitchell, St Catherine’s Hospice

Macmillan Chinese/Thai meal at Bamboo raises £700

Christ’s Hospital Choral Society raises £1,150 for Macmillan

Monday 13th March saw another charity event for Macmillan, this time held at the recently opened Bamboo Chinese/Thai Restaurant in Jengers Mead in the heart of Billingshurst. The ad in the March issue of Village Tweet resulted in a packed out restaurant with over 30 people enjoying a set menu. Over £700 was raised for the Billingshurst Macmillan Support Group thanks to the generosity of Bamboo; they hope to run a similar event again in the next couple of months – watch for the announcement in Village Tweet. Rowena Harris Billingshurst Macmillan Support Group

We are pleased to announce that the Christ’s Hospital Choral Society’s Christmas concert raised £1,150, an amount that we’re all extremely proud of. Macmillan’s Local Fundraising Manager Tom Lay came to our rehearsal in April where he was very happy to receive the cheque from our treasurer Robyn Page. One of the ways we manage to achieve such sums is because of the support from local magazines such as Village Tweet, and thereby help advertise our concerts. Our next concert it on 16th June, again at Christ’s Hospital. This time we will be singing from the Bavarian Highlands by Elgar, and Rutter’s The Sprig of Thyme. Dying Matters – Let’s talk about it

T

alking about death and bereavement probably isn’t your idea of a good conversation. But it’s more important than you think. It may even be easier than you think. Death is still very much a taboo subject. But not talking to your loved ones about what you want or they would choose can have devastating results. Do you know what sort of death your loved one wants or what sort of funeral they would like? Do you know what different funeral options are available? Have you made known your wishes? When someone is dying or dies, there’s a lot to consider. It’s then that you realise that knowing what kind of death and funeral someone wants really matters. It can save family disagreements, unexpected costs and bring a sense of peace that your loved one’s life ended the way they would want. As part of Dying Matters National Awareness Week, I’d like to invite you to join me in ‘the big conversation’. It’s free. It’s informal. But it’s a

chance to find out more about some of the many different options available and some of the choices you have. You can ask questions or just help yourself to refreshments and listen. It won’t be depressing and there may even be laughter. Dying really does matter, so let’s get it out in the open. Judith, Dandelion Farewells Please join me on: Billingshurst:

Community transport

Billingshurst Community Transport – an appeal for more drivers

B

illingshurst Community Transport is pleased to announce it has taken on delivery of a new vehicle, funded by the Department of Transport, to whom we are most grateful. We are pleased to say that the previous vehicle has been sold on to Ingfield Manor and we are glad to have been of some assistance to that worthwhile charity. The Community Car Scheme is now in its 14th year and has become a key service for the elderly, frail and disabled in that time. Currently carrying out around 5,000 journeys each year and visiting several surgeries and over 25 different hospitals it has become an essential service in support of the independence of our users (between 300 and 400 people). If you are in need of transport support please contact Gill Willett on (01403) 787696 for a chat. Needless to say all of this would not be possible

without our volunteer drivers and we are very grateful to all those who currently give up their time so willingly. Unfortunately the population of Billingshurst and the outlying communities that we cover keeps increasing and we are always searching for new drivers, particularly in the Loxwood, Ifold, Kirdford and Plaistow areas. If you have a little spare time and would like to help people in your community please also contact Gill or Ken Johnson on (01403) 782754 to talk through just what is involved and the extent of your commitment, which will be in line with the time you have available. We really look forward to hearing from you if interested. Crouchland Biogas/Farm protest – update

F

arm Fuels Ltd, wholly owned by Crouchland Biogas, were called AGAIN to another TRAFFIC COMMISSIONERS PUBLIC INQUIRY on 29th March in Eastbourne. Sarah Bell, the Traffic Commissioner explained to Leon Mekitarian, Chairman that he had not fulfilled his obligations as a Director of the company. The barrister representing Farm Fuels Ltd, Patrick Saad, offered Leon Mekitarian’s resignation as Chairman, which was welcomed by the Commissioner. She added that if he’d stayed with any control she would have been minded to revoke their licence. The Traffic Commissioner thanked the residents for their evidence and said they were truly holding Farm Fuels Ltd to account and that she hoped the company would ensure no further breaches. She is yet to make her full decision and will also be considering Leon Mekitarian’s application for two new operating centres; one of which is in Horsham, for a total of 12 vehicles and 16 trailers. COME ALONG TO PULBOUROUGH! There is going to be one combined Planning Inquiry, into the two outstanding planning appeals by Crouchland Biogas Ltd. Located at Brinsbury

Bees / About the house

Honey Bee Swarms This is the time of year for swarming – would you know what to do?

S

warming is a natural instinct for bees, and all colonies if left to their own devices will eventually swarm. This is part of their means of reproduction; if they didn’t there would be no bees. The swarm has to find a new home but in the meantime it will find a branch, fence or a gate to hang from. Worker bees scout around until they find a suitable tree, chimney or roof space and then return to the swarm to show them the way to their new home. This can take anything from few minutes to a couple of days. Prior to leaving the nest they will fill up with honey to last them on their journey, so they need to find somewhere before they get hungry. Swarms of bees are not normally aggressive

but don’t take kindly to being approached, sprayed with water or have things thrown at them. It is important to give nature a helping hand by calling a local beekeeper who can re-home the bees safely. Left to their own devices the bees may end up somewhere unsuitable such as down a chimney. There are several beekeepers in our area but the best place to check is the BBKA website www.bbka.org.uk. There you can enter in your post code and all the local collectors will be listed. Or you can call 07966 509424. Martin Hill

Billingshurst Firefighters Charity Car Wash raises £700

W

e would like to start with a big ‘Thank You’ to those who supported our Charity Car Wash back in March. We raised £700 which is a fantastic effort for such a small community. You brought along your dirty cars in large numbers and supported our Fire-Fighters Charity very generously. We talk about this charity often due to it being so close to our hearts. It’s a charity that supports injured fire fighters and also their families. It heavily relies on days like these and all fire stations across the UK hold various events, or have a presence at shows and fêtes etc to support the charity. Our next event will be our Open Day which is another fantastic day organised by the crews on station. This is a great opportunity for you to come and see what we really do – that’s not drinking tea or playing pool! We hope to get a date for a Saturday during September so once confirmed we will let everyone know.

It’s been generally fairly quiet on station recently which is good, nothing serious to report. We do still have a one or two vacancies in our team. Are you aged 18+ and live or work within 4 minutes of the fire station? Want to join a great team and learn a wide range of new skills? Protect your local community? Pop down during a Monday evening any time from 6.30-9.30 to find out more. We hope everyone still remembers our message from last month’s issue regarding the new stricter mobile phone law. Please remember, don’t use your mobile phone while driving. We have many ways for you to get in contact now, our Facebook (billingshurst fire station) and Twitter (Billingshurst FRS) pages are regularly checked and we will do our best to reply as soon as possible. Dan Game, Billingshurst Fire Station Photo: Charity Car Wash attracted all sorts of vehicles!

Book reviews / About the house

A Good Read May’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Daughter of the Forest – Juliet Marillier Authors draw inspiration from many places and it has been said that there are only so many stories to be told. Very often the skill of the storyteller is not in the story but in how it is told. Ancient mythology is a common source of inspiration and it is from the old Celtic myths of Ireland that this New Zealand author has turned for this historical fantasy fiction. Based loosely on the legend of the Children of Lir and elements of the German fairy-tale The Six Swans Marillier manages to conjure up the rich and mystical landscape of ancient Ireland. Sorcha is the youngest of seven children and is raised largely by her six older brothers following the death of her mother during her birth. Her father remarries but his new wife is jealous and attacks the children. Sorcha escapes but her brothers are all turned into swans. Desperate to save them she learns that they will be freed if she weaves six shirts out of nettles without speaking a word to anyone. Retreating into the forest to complete her task she is cared for by the faerie-folk and visited twice a year by her brothers in human form. But if Sorcha thought that this seemingly impossible task was all that awaited her she was very much mistaken. This engrossing story will completely transport you to a magical landscape, evocative of Tolkien and ancient mythology.

Noughts and Crosses – Marjorie Blackman For today’s teenagers the mid-20th century really is history, and the attitudes of that time are alien to their lives. Young people today are exposed to such a range of cultures and people that segregation (South African apartheid or the Jewish ghettos) can seem unimaginable. Yet even a cursory glance at the News reveals that it is perilously real for some, and not just those in foreign lands. This is why Marjorie Blackman’s award-winning teen novel is so unsettling. It tells of a divided society with two groups. The Crosses are the lucky ones: born into privilege and wealth. They run the country and have the best funded schools. But the Crosses couldn’t function without the other half – the noughts. The noughts are the bottom half of society. Their purpose is to work for Crosses and to keep the country ticking over. They are suppressed at every opportunity. This is segregation taken to the extreme. But it doesn’t work as you might think it does… At the start of the story 13-year-old Sephy (a Cross) is secretly continuing a childhood friendship with Callum (a nought). This is a friendship that seems to be on a path to selfdestruction as their feelings for each other grow. Fuelled by the growing uprising among noughts and the Liberation Militia the two teenagers are destined to be pulled apart. Blackman presents many echoes of the past: America in the 50s, South Africa under apartheid, and even the IRA of the 70s and 80s. Add to this some inspiration from Romeo and Juliet and you have a novel that will challenge the way you view the world.

Small craft invited to join WACT River Rally

A

friendly flotilla of canoeists, kayakers and small boat owners is seeking recruits for an expedition up the River Arun. The occasion is the annual rally on the waterway between Pulborough and Pallingham Quay organised by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust. The 2017 event is on Sunday, 14th May, again celebrating the long tradition of boats navigating a river which was once part of a route from London to the South Coast. Last year’s flotilla included members of the Trust, enthusiasts from several canoe clubs and youth groups and even a paddle boarder. “Our rally is always a colourful, convivial and very pleasant occasion,” said Trust chairman Sally Schupke. “Everyone with a canoe, kayak, paddle board or small boat is welcome to join us for an enjoyable outing on the river.” The Arun is tidal as far as Pallingham Weir and the rally date is chosen to ensure the tide is high enough for small craft to navigate a picturesque section of the waterway. The aim is to reach the site of the original junction of the Wey & Arun Canal with the river and then go on

to the Pallingham Quay, the highest navigable point for boats on the Arun. The 18th century Stopham Bridge is another historic feature on the route. Launching at Pulborough is planned for between 3pm and 3.30pm for small boats which need to use the slipway there. There will be a break at Pallingham Quay and, if time and water levels permit, participants can also stop for refreshments at the White Hart pub by Stopham Bridge. To book places on the rally visit the events page at www.weyarun.org.uk – which provides more information and maps – or e-mail rallies@weyandarun.co.uk. Wey & Arun Canal Trust is restoring the 23-mile canal between Pallingham and Shalford in Surrey. The owners of small boats, canoes and kayaks can book to use the restored canal section at Loxwood and at various other points where restoration has taken place. Community / About the house

2017 is Lions Clubs International Centenary Year

B

illingshurst & District Lions Club invites your suggestions for a major centennial project to be selected from ideas put to us by any of the local communities or a local organisation. Club President Peter Coleman says that… “The Club is looking for a project that will make a real difference to people, whether young or old. As a Club the Lions are prepared to donate funds, help fund raise or get their hands dirty – whatever is required. The project should have an urgent need and must benefit the community as a whole. The Lions are prepared to invest £5,000 in the project and, if a project is identified that is really needed, we may be prepared to go beyond that figure. We are asking all local organisations in Billingshurst, Slinfold, Barns Green, Shipley, Loxwood, Wisborough Green, Kirdford, Rudgwick, Plaistow and Ifold to publicise our offer within your community and support all who wish

to make an approach to us. Initially we require an outline letter providing detail of the need identified. We will then prioritise responses and meet with the chosen organisations to understand what is required in greater detail.” First responses are required by the end of June. Those organisations making it to the shortlist will be asked to present their suggestion in detail to the Club by the end of September at which time a winner will be chosen and the scope of the project agreed. All ideas and suggestions will be kept on file for future consideration. All responses should be sent to Lion Mike Bobker, 38 Rowan Drive, Billingshurst RH14 9NF who can be contacted by email to ‘joanmike38@hotmail.com. S

linfold CE Primary and Pre-School are delighted to announce that their celebrated Summer Fair will be held on Sunday 21st May, 12-3pm. Along with the usual barbecue and Cricket Club bar refreshments, we will be enjoying the Seaside theme with Punch and Judy, Ice creams, coconut shy and many other of our usual attractions such as a live Band, ‘Doomsville’! We are running a raffle and auction, with great prizes generously donated by local companies, as well as other chances to win a prize! Pick up a programme from various local Slinfold businesses for more information. Slinfold’s Summer Fair has always been a fantastic day out for the whole family – with high attendance and record-breaking fundraising. We raised £7,000 last year, which is amazing for such a small village and school. The money raised by the PTA over the year pays for the whole school to attend ‘Forest Schools’ and also funds extra-curricular activities

With your support this year, we hope to be able to improve our ICT facilities. Our PTA work hard all year round to raise funds – we run several events including a weekly cake raffle – but we would not be able to achieve any of this success without the tremendous support from Miss Phibbs, the school staff, parents and extended family who attend our events. We are reaching out to you, friends, family and supporters of West Sussex, to join us at our number one event and enjoy every second! See you all on Sunday 21st May for a fabulous day out! The Hound of The Baskervilles, an adaptation of the famous Sherlock Holmes story, will be our next production in July (details to follow in next month’s Village Tweet). This is a

modern adaptation but retains all the mystery surrounding the legendary hound, combined with a good dose of humour and the addition of some wonderfully eccentric characters all of which will leave you in suspense until the very end. This play has lots of opportunities for both on-stage and backstage parts. Rehearsals are on Mondays and Thursdays and are always both friendly and fun. There are lots of smaller parts for men on offer so this might be an ideal opportunity to renew an old interest or to try something new. When we were young John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

O

ver the years there are many things that I have found to be a source of great enjoyment, but it’s since I have been blessed with grandchildren that I have found the greatest. Seeing the world through their eyes and listening to how they feel about growing up is a delight and an education. Their grasp of modern technology is quite amazing and I envy them in the things they have yet to see in their future years. I do wonder though if they will have the memories regarding their childhood playtimes as we oldies have. Let me elaborate. My own childhood was during that rather bleak period that followed the war, the second one, that is – I’m not that old! There was no television of course and an accumulator powered radio and a ’phone box at the end of the road provided was the limit of our technology. Whether it was this lack of more technical entertainment I don’t know, but I feel that we may have had a far greater variety of playtime activities than the modern child. I know the one thing we certainly had that is understandably not so available to our grandchildren, and that was freedom. Freedom to wander far beyond the family home for long hours without our parents having a panic attack as to our safety. With a sandwich and a bottle of pop we would spend most of the day away in the fields and woods oblivious to danger from any quarter. It was a freedom that I now reflect on with much gratitude. I would hasten to add here that this part of my life was not in the countryside but in a town environment, but even so parks, fields and woods were not that far away. There was a whole plethora of games and activities that we had in those days aided and abetted by the fact that compared to now, traffic was almost nonexistent. In fact, as I recall in our suburban streets the only horses seen were those that pulled the milkman’s, baker’s and coalman’s carts. As a result, many games developed making use of these much quieter byways. Hopscotch on the pavements along with roller skates (simple contraptions that strapped under our shoes) and soapbox carts, while football, hide and seek, skipping, bicycle polo and a range of ‘He’ chase games made use of the empty roads. It was at school, as well as on the way to and from school, that the greater majority of these games came to the fore. A peculiarity of these being that they each seemed to have their own place and time in the season. We would all be flicking fag cards at the schoolyard wall for two or three weeks then without any apparent signal they would be changed for blood alleys, cats eyes, and assorted marbles for a similar period. Dabs, or five stones, would follow and then

30

collecting milk bottle tops and turning them into pom poms with scraps of spare wool until the novelty wore off. French knitting with a discarded cotton reel or making tanks with the same reel, using a piece of candle and a rubber band for the propulsion unit. What sparked the changes I never knew, but it was an accepted part of the playtime ritual. There were of course seasonal events that heralded some games. Conkers of course could be relied on to bring out our experimental aptitudes. We baked them, soaked them in vinegar and tried many variations in vain efforts to improve their strength, usually to no avail! In the depths of winter, with very little snow clearance being done, long slides would be made down any sloping pavement that could be found, much to the detriment of our elders. Leap frog and tag were a constant, and for a while we advanced leap frog into a game we called ‘Flyer’. The basic rules were the same, one poor soul would bend over to make a ‘back’ and a line was drawn at his feet, the remainder then hopped over him. The change we made was that where the first boy landed, the ‘back’ would move to that point. The others would then in turn leap over him but still taking off from the original line. After everyone had jumped the ‘back’ would move once more after the first leaper landed again. The distance between the line and the poor devil bending over very rapidly increased to a frightening point. Inevitably it would end in one poor lad failing to make the distance and a sickening collision in which much laughter could be guaranteed. There was a distinct lack of Health and Safety in those days, but even so, after a couple of lads had received blows from toe-caps heavily reinforced with Blakeys, our game was banned from the playground by the teachers and relegated to out of school activities. For the girls – who I must say were mainly an unknown species to us pubescent boys – skipping and giggling seemed to play a major role, but I suspect that they too had many games that were hidden from their more scruffy contemporaries. We did, I recall, have joint ventures at playing ‘knock-down-ginger’, but I think this may have been just taking advantage of the fact that on the whole us boys could run away faster! So, memories of these pursuits from my childhood bring me to ask if we had a better time then than our grandchildren do now, and I suspect that the answer of course is… No, just different. I guess children make what they can with the times they live in. For myself, I think we had great fun, a freedom that has been lost today, and a childhood that certainly lasted longer then than it does nowadays. Even now I can recall those wonderful, long, summer days playing marbles in the gutter with my best friend… till we fell of the roof! I know, I know, but the old ones are the best! John Nash

Go for a ‘Poddle’ to help bring canal back to life

A

walk in beautiful countryside viewing hidden heritage sites is on offer from the Wey & Arun Canal Trust. The Trust provides a detailed guide to the route, a free lunch and refreshments including tea and cake along the way. In return for a great day out in the Arun Valley, walkers raise a minimum of £20 each for the Trust in sponsorship. Everyone is welcome to join in the event – known as the Poddle – on Sunday, 4th June. A bonus for community groups is that they can raise money for their good causes through a 50/50 sponsorship option, without having to do any of the organising. Teams of walkers which collect more than £200, a minimum of £20 each, split their proceeds equally with the Trust. The annual Poddle supports the restoration of ‘London’s Lost Route to the Sea’, a waterway which ran from Pallingham in West Sussex to Shalford in Surrey. This year, walkers will follow a 12-mile route around the Arun Valley, starting and finishing at Ingfield Manor School at Five Oaks, north of Billingshurst, with lunch at Wisborough Green Scout Hut. The route includes the canal from Loves Bridge, past Rowner Lock – the site of the first volunteer

working party on the canal – to Lordings. Walkers will be able to see a unique waterwheel and a restored aqueduct. After lunch, the route heads across farmland and past the partially restored Malham Lock then through woodland back to the school. Walk co-ordinator Margaret Darvill said: “We welcome everyone who would like to support the canal restoration through an enjoyable day in the country. Walkers can do half the route, either the morning or the afternoon, if they wish. “Our 50/50 arrangement particularly benefits groups such as the scouts and guides and other young people’s organisations. We make all the arrangements, they help themselves and the trust while enjoying a day out in some lovely countryside.” Individuals and groups can register to join the Poddle at www.weyarun.org.uk/events. For more information, call Margaret on (01483) 894606 or email her at poddle@weyandarun.co.uk. Billingshurst Primary School Spring Fair raises £3,443

B

illingshurst Primary School’s Enterprise Week uncovered some start-up stars at the Spring Fair on Thursday 6th April. In an initiative worthy of BBC’s Dragon’s Den, pupils enjoyed a week of activities designed to showcase and encourage up-and-coming entrepreneurs. As part of Enterprise Week, each class received a £10 ‘start-up fund’ to support the best creative ideas to maximise their return on investment. The week culminated in the Annual Spring Fair, one of the school’s major fundraising events, which is now run by the children. Pupils worked together to select and create goods to be sold on stalls at the Fair, with prizes for the most money raised, best sales people and the most attractive stall. The hard work paid off as pupils raised a recordbreaking £3,443.43 at the event. This year’s Fair ranged from a Mocktail bar and pizza stand, to crafts such as forest animals, decorative plant pots and dream catchers. Displaying some promising sales skills were Year 6 pupils from Japan Class who took the most amount of money on their Mocktails stall. Annual sponsors, Fowlers Estate Agents in Billingshurst High Street, ran a spring poster competition, inviting students to design the artwork to promote the event. As head judge, Fowlers’ Keith

Hutchinson chose a winning entry from each year group. The overall winners were Maya Pascoe from Reception, George Hunt from Key Stage 1 and Baylie Pody from Key Stage 2. Over 100 entries were received and now decorate the gates of the school. Helen Williamson, Head Teacher, commented, “This year we handed the responsibility of running the event to the children and their response has been remarkable. Pupils displayed their practical, creative and mathematical skills at each stage of the process, from concept design to sales, and as a result feel an enormous sense of achievement from the money raised.” Keith Hutchinson, Manager at Fowlers, added, “As ever, we were very impressed with the creativity of the entries and the winning designs are now on display in our High Street window. Enterprise Week has offered a valuable taster of some of the essential skills needed to start and grow a business and we are delighted to play a part in supporting this project.” Kate Clifford, Billingshurst Primary School Community Association Photo: The winning children with their posters. Are You Ready for Revision?

E

xam time is a stressful time not just for the student but for the whole family. If you are sitting exams this term what’s the best way to cope? There’s no way round it, the answer has to be planning and preparation… Set up your revision timetable as early as possible, that way you can pace yourself. It’s tempting to put everything off but you will then face a lastminute panic. How do you study best? Some people prefer to spend a whole day on one subject, others prefer to break their time into smaller blocks and tackle several subjects in short bursts. Whichever you choose, make sure you take a short break every hour or so. Pop outside, stretch your legs, have a drink and maybe a snack. Oxygen, nutritious food and water are essential for concentration and mental alertness. Effective brain function relies on neurotransmitters, which are chemicals made from amino acids. These are found in food rich in good quality protein, like lean meat, fish, soya and beans. In order to convert the amino acids into neurotransmitters the body also need vitamins and minerals, so top up on fruit and vegetables. Refined sugar, found in sweets and chocolate releases glucose too quickly into the bloodstream and this can cause mood swings. Emotions run high around exam time anyway, so it is better to snack on nuts, seeds and fruit, which provide a slow, steady release of glucose. Our brains also depend on proper hydration to function optimally. Brain cells require a delicate balance between water and various elements to operate. Research has found that if we’re even slightly dehydrated we find it more difficult to focus. Aim to drink around up to 1.5-2 litres of

water, diluted fruit juice or herbal teas per day. Drinks rich in caffeine, such as Red Bull or coffee trigger production of the stress hormone cortisol which can make you feel even more edgy and nervous, and make it harder to focus and find the right words under exam pressure. Gentle exercise, such as walking or cycling, in between study sessions improves the blood circulation to the brain and actually relieves stress, making you feel more relaxed. On the day of an exam focus on breathing; slow deep breaths in and out will help to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Try not to engage in pre- or post-exam discussion, as this can make you feel anxious. If you’re well prepared and well-rested then you are ready. But remember they are only exams. They are one measure of your ability taken at one point in time. They do not relate to who you are as a person, or how well you will ultimately do in life. All you can ever do is try your best on the day. Good luck. Sarah Davey

What type of learner are you? Visual learners – prefer note cards and tend to map out information on paper. Auditory learners – prefer to read their notes aloud, and listen to them being played back. Kinaesthetic learners – need action. Record your voice and play back the information while walking. Take revision notes to the gym and read while running on a treadmill, even sitting on a swing reading notes can work.

The Weald Celebrates 9th Book Award

T

he Weald Book Award celebrated its 9th year on 28th February. Run by Mrs Jane Fella (Learning Resources Centre Manager) and Miss Elaine McKenna (Teacher of English), it brings together a number of our current Year 7 pupils and Year 6 students from most of our feeder primary schools. The award not only encourages students to read more, but also supports the transition process that prepares Year 6 students for life at The Weald. This year, seven book titles were shortlisted by a committee made up of both Weald School and feeder primary school teachers. The books are mostly written by new authors and have been published recently. Titles included The Girl of Ink and Stars by Kiran Millwood Hargrave, The Uncommoners by Jennifer Bell, Alfie Bloom by Gabrielle Kent, Island by Nicky Singer, The Boy and the Globe by Tony Bradman, My Brother is a Superhero by David Solomons and How to Fly with Broken Wings by Jane Elson. During after school book club sessions, students are actively encouraged to read as many titles as possible and then take part in competition categories that have inspired them, these range from designing your own book cover, creative writing, making a film trailer or devising a new character for one of the books. Author Kiran Millwood Hargrave came into the school in January and gave a talk to all the Weald Book Award participants, about writing the book and the inspiration

she gained from visiting La Gomera. Mrs Fella said, “It was wonderful to see so many students enjoying and being inspired by the shortlisted books. The standard of entries was very high and it was quite a challenge to choose the winners. Thank you to everyone involved especially the authors who were with us on the night.” At the awards evening we were delighted to be joined by three of the authors in person, and one via Skype! It was hosted by Katie Chapman and Grace Read, who have become absolutely integral in the running of these events over the last few years. The two girls were joined by younger students who introduced each book to the audience of students, parents and staff, and we then heard from each of the authors. Awards were presented to a large number of students for their tremendous efforts with the project over the last few months, and the evening culminated in the trophy for The Weald Book Award being awarded to Jane Elson for How to Fly with Broken Wings. Jane was clearly thrilled with her win, and warmly thanked the panel for their votes. We very much look forward to next year’s award, which no doubt will again be a tough contest. Pets

Caring for your rabbit

R

abbits are very popular pets but a sad fact is that many do not get their needs fully met and end up bored and languishing in unsuitable hutches at the bottom of the garden. Think long and hard before acquiring a rabbit as they are a big commitment living between 8 and 10 years on average. They make nice pets for older children but can be very sensitive so they are not always suitable for very small children. Rabbits require plenty of handling from a young age; the ideal age to acquire a rabbit is around 8-10 weeks of age. Make sure you and your family will have plenty of time to devote to them as they will need cleaning out on a daily basis as well as feeding, interaction and exercise. Rabbits are highly sociable animals and love company of their own kind. Ideal paring is a neutered male and female, especially if brought up together. It’s still very common for rabbits and guinea pigs to be kept together but this is not ideal as they have different dietary requirements and rabbits can bully and injure the guinea pig. Housing. This is the most important yet most overlooked part of rabbit care. Rabbits need lots of space in which to exercise and they are indeed very active little creatures, a 4 foot hutch is simply not enough space and they also need a large run area. A hutch should be a minimum of 6 feet in length, raised off the floor and have a nice rest area with enough space for the rabbit to lie down and stretch out. Runs should be a large as possible so the rabbit can take several hops in a row; it must also be high enough to enable the rabbit to stand on his hind legs without his ears touching the roof. Enrich the living area with tunnels for the rabbits to hide in, platforms for them to stand on and various toys such as willow bark items and snack balls to encourage foraging and chewing. Make sure all outdoor housing is predator proof. Rabbits can also be kept indoors successfully in a large indoor cage and many people allow them to exercise around the house, although it must be rabbit proofed first! Rabbits are very easy to litter train, just take note of the area the rabbit uses to toilet and place the litter tray there and they will soon learn to

use it as they are very clean animals. For both indoor and outdoor rabbits make sure you use a dust-free bedding such as wood shavings, chopped straw or a hemp based bedding. Feeding. Yes – rabbits do love carrots! In fact they like many vegetables, green leafy veg such as kale and broccoli can be fed. They also love parsnips and apples, although apples and root veg can be high in sugar so feed sparingly. Hay and grass should form the bulk of the diet, grass can be either fresh or growing or freeze dried from the pet store such as Readigrass, NEVER feed lawn cuttings as these will make your rabbit very ill. Rabbit food tends to come as muesli, pellets or nuggets. Pellets or nuggets are the best way to feed as your rabbit will not be able to selectively feed as they often will with a muesli mix leading to wastage and an imbalanced diet. Fresh clean drinking water must be provided at all times. Health care. Rabbits must be vaccinated against two killer diseases – Myxomatosis and Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease (RHD), usually yearly. Ask your vet about when to get these vaccinations. Check your rabbit daily for any signs of illness or injury, this can be done during grooming which is essential for long-haired rabbits, in the summer months be especially aware of fly strike, this nasty affliction is caused by flies laying their eggs around the rabbit’s bottom where it may have got stained by urine or faeces; rabbits should have their bottom gently washed on a daily basis to prevent this and bedding kept scrupulously clean. Rabbits’ teeth grow constantly throughout their lives and must be kept in check with correct diet. Plenty of hay to chew on helps keep teeth worn down as does chewing on willow and apple wood sticks. Your vet can also clip the rabbit’s teeth if needed. Rabbits are very rewarding pets and are intelligent animals providing their owners with lots of pleasure. Beautiful Ifold cat cruelly targeted by criminals Pet owners in and around the Ifold area should be vigilant

I

n February, during her annual check-up it was found that Bailey, our beautiful rescued cat had been assaulted by a deranged individual armed with an air gun and had a pellet lodged in her leg. A month later, on the evening of Monday 6th March Bailey was hit again. This time the perpetrator must have cruelly trapped or held Bailey as she was shot three times in the abdomen. It is possible more than one person was involved as the air gun would have to be reloaded between shots – a two-handed task. (Initially, I had thought she had been injured from a fall or hit by a car but there was no blood. It was only after X-rays were taken that the pellets could be seen.) They say that cats have nine lives‌ poor Bailey has certainly used up several of them! But this is no joking matter; it is an act of mindless cruelty. Yew Tree Vets in Cranleigh were able to perform surgery immediately and gave her a fighting chance. You will be pleased to know that Bailey has made an

excellent recovery. Sussex Police are aware of this cruel incident. This is a criminal offence and is incredibly brutal. Bailey has been assulted on more than one occasion so this is not a once-only incident. Therefore please be aware of the safety of your own pets. I live in the Ifold area so would urge pet owners in and around that area in particular to be vigilant. Village Tweet has kindly given this space free of charge to publicise this incident and ensure the safety and wellbeing of all the animals in the local area. If you are aware of any incident prior or after this date, please contact the Sussex Police so that we can continue to make Ifold and the surrounding areas a safe and happy place. Please e-mail me on gemma_nicholson@hotmail.com if you have any knowledge about this case and I will give you the Crime Number or I am happy to contact the police on your behalf if you prefer. Blooming baskets!

I

t’s hanging basket season! They can be a source of delight but also a source of stress. It’s easy for a hanging basket to fail badly. Too sparsely filled and they look bedraggled. Too little water and death is swift! The secret to growing a successful basket lays both in the way it’s planted but also in sensible aftercare. Plant the basket with bedding plants at the beginning of May but don’t plant them out for a couple of weeks, especially if you live in a more exposed area. Instead give them some shelter in a porch, or unheated greenhouse, or even under polythene at the side of the house. This allows the new plants to grow and toughen up a little before they are hung in their final position. Check that your bracket and chains for signs of rust and also check that the bracket is securely fixed to the wall. Hanging baskets are extremely heavy, especially when they are wet and you really don’t want your lovingly-planted orb of flowers to be deposited unceremoniously all over the floor! Planting is easiest if you balance the basket on a large flowerpot or bucket to keep it level. Fibrous liners help to retain water and look nicer than polythene. For extra moisture retention

place a circle of polythene in the base of the basket before filling with soil. The best planting medium is soilless multi-purpose compost, mixed with waterretaining granules. Place a layer of compost in the base of the basket and push the first layer of plants through. Trailing plants such as lobelia, bidens and ivy-leafed pelargoniums look lovely but you can be as creative as you like. Water the plants in their containers before planting them and squeeze the rootball firmly to make it small enough to push though the mesh from the outside. Plant quite densely and gradually build up layers of plants and soil. When it’s full to within 3 cm of the rim you can plant up the top with more upright, compact bushy plants such as begonias, petunias and pelargoniums. Make sure your basket never dries out; it will be reliant on you for all water and nutrition. If you water it at least once a day and feed with dilute tomato fertilizer once a week I promise it will be blooming basket in the best possible way. Happy gardening. Rachel Leverton

Floral Fringe Fair 2017 Quirky, Quintessential Englishness at its Best!

T

his year’s Floral Fringe Fair is taking place on the weekend of 3rd and 4th June at Knepp Castle, Shipley, near Horsham, RH13 8LJ from 10.30am to 5pm both days. The Floral Fringe Fair is quirky and eclectic. It has a wildlife theme but also a vintage twist. The fair specialises in quality stalls from Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Hampshire and stallholders who have actually made what they sell and so are able to talk with first hand knowledge and passion about their product. Also vintage stalls selling items made by craftspeople from the past. Entry is £6.50 per person, £1.00 for children under 14 and children under 4 free. If arriving in a classic car or vintage pre1975 vehicle entry is £5.50 each for the first two occupants. Classic and vintage vehicles will have a specially allocated parking area. If in such a vehicle, dressing in appropriate fashion is especially encouraged… or even if not arriving in a classic car, dressing in style is welcome! Why not bring your retro picnic basket and rug and buy all the ingredients for your picnic from the numerous street food stalls at the fair. There are many picnic spots by the beautiful lake. Or eat in our fabulous pop-up tearoom. The fair is becoming something of a foodies favourite. Well-behaved dogs on leads positively welcomed. There are free-roaming cattle, sheep, ponies, geese and deer which may have young, so leads are essential at all times. We saw some gorgeous pooches come to the fair last year. We have thought of them with a several stalls selling delicious doggy treats for good dogs, plus handmade collars and leads. Knepp Castle is the subject of an unusual and nationally important re-wilding project and there will be the chance to learn more about this at the fair. Wildlife safaris have recently been launched on the estate and there is a well-equipped luxury campsite. Find out more and also directions to the fair at www.knepp.co.uk.

The overall theme of the fair is our native wildlife and how to encourage it into the garden but the fair has grown and developed into much more than that. It is about everything that is quintessentially English and quirky, about celebrating the outdoors, gardens and gardening. About talented craftspeople and artists of today as well as the craftspeople of a bygone era, represented by vintage stalls and classic cars. You can expect over 130 stalls including specialist nurseries, experts on wildlife, honeybees, insects, birds and bats. Words used by visitors to describe our fair last year were ‘Unique, Eclectic, Quirky, Quality, Informative and Friendly’. There will be music from local musicians, dancing and singing. The beautiful private gardens at Knepp Castle, designed by Georgia Langton, will be especially open during the fair. Many Farmer’s Market food stalls will be selling a wide range of carefully chosen food to suit everyone and most dietary requirements have been mindfully taken into consideration. There will be plenty of places to sit: a tea tent, a local ale tent also serving Pimms, gourmet fishfinger sandwiches with nori batter, a barbecue, freshly baked wood-fired oven pizzas, cooked as you wait vegetarian organic bhajis and pakoras, quiches, pies, cheeses, breads and smoked meat. Fruit smoothies, coffee, teas, a selection of cakes, icecream, chocolate, marshmallows, fudge and many interesting food stalls from which to buy a picnic to eat by the beautiful lake. All of our stallholders are independent, small businesses and not many of them have card machine facilities so please remember to bring lots of cash to the fair. Rotary Club Race Night raises £2,000

H

aving recently handed a cheque for £4,000 to Chestnut Tree House hospice for children, members of Billingshurst and District Rotary Club turned their attention to deprived children in Africa… A Race Night was held at Billingshurst Conference Centre with all the proceeds divided between The David Tilley Foundation and Havilla Children’s Home in Kipsaina, Keyna. The late David Tilley, who was a member of Billingshurst Rotary Club, founded St Michael’s School at Kilolo, Tanzania, in 2005, and his widow Helen, son Mark and the local Anglican Bishop are amongst the Trustees. The school has been such a success that diplomats from Dar es Salaam started sending their children there, which defeated the object. David Tilley then decided that the children put forward by the local village chiefs, as best able to benefit from four years secondary education, should be sponsored through the Foundation. Billingshurst and District Rotary Club sponsor three students, one of whom recently went on to further education and was replaced by a new boy. Currently Billingshurst Rotary Club support two boys and a girl, but there are about 30 children sponsored through the foundation. When in Kenya, with Weald School pupils building

classrooms for the local children, Rotarian Tony Priestley visits the Havilla Children’s Home, which is an orphanage in desperate need of help. The event was attended by 100 supporters who enjoyed a two-course supper and the chance to own, ride and bet on horses in eight races. There was the usual excitement and noise as people urged on their chosen runners. £2,000 was raised, which means that each charity will benefit by £1,000. This will go a long way in Africa. The success of the evening could not have been achieved without the generous support of Guy Harwood, Skoda Garage Broadbridge Heath, Rupert Toovey, Aurac, Billingshurst Butchers, Willow fashion shop, and Allan Weller, who sponsored races, together with Luddenham Ltd who donated some of the ingredients for the excellent supper of shepherds pie and lemon posset. Billingshurst and District Rotary Club meet every Monday at The Blacksmiths Arms, Adversane. www.billingshurstrotary.org Helen Abbott Photo: Choosing bets concentrates the mind!

Telephone Box to receive overhaul Residents will be pleased to hear that the phone box in the High Street, near the sorting office, will be having an overhaul during the summer months. The box has fallen into disrepair and BT has been urged by Council staff to carry out the required refurbishment to bring it back to its former glory.

Our Community Volunteers – Stuart Pullen

T

he Billingshurst and District Rotary Club meet every Monday evening in The Blacksmiths Arms in Adversane, which is how Stuart Pullen first became involved with them. When Stuart’s son worked there in the early ’eighties, his boss told him he ought to ask his father to join the recently formed local branch, and Stuart thought he would give it a try. Three and a half decades later he is still a Rotarian, having been Assistant Governor for the District and President of the local Rotary Club on two occasions over the years. The spirit of the Rotary Club is very much that different communities know what help is needed locally and can make autonomous decisions as to how to raise and distribute funds and other assistance. The principal fundraising event in this area is the Billingshurst Show which the Rotary Club run with the local Scout and Guide groups, and the money that the event raises goes to these two organisations at a local level. Events like this also require help from others in the community and much of this has been provided by younger residents, some of whom have not perhaps previously been known for their community spirit, but who have flourished when asked to give their assistance.

The Rotary Club, however, is not just an international organisation but the largest voluntary organisation in the world. The Billingshurst and District Rotary Club has been directly involved with two overseas projects: an orphanage in Tanzania which was co-founded by a previous member, and the Children of Sumatra, with which Stuart and his wife Margaret have had a personal involvement, which funds around 80 operations a year for children with cleft lips and palates. It was for this work that Stuart was awarded the prestigious Champion of Change Award in 2014 for making a difference to people’s lives. However, Stuart is unabashed about his motives in being involved with the Club and says he does it simply because he enjoys it. “You can’t be a Rotarian without enjoying what you do. A Rotarian is one of those people who can’t say no!” For more information about The Rotary Club, contact Stuart on (01798) 873791.
