elcome to the twelfth issue of Village Tweet. Yes, that’s right, we have been dropping through your letterbox for one year! We are fortunate to have a number of regular contributors, most recently Samantha Shearman of Angel Eyes Images. Sam has provided many photos for Village Tweet including the last three cover shots – this month’s evocative treatment of the Remembrance Day poppy theme is superb especially when combined with Laurence Binyon’s prophetic poem, For the Fallen, published in The Times, September 1914. Katsu Stuffed Peppers Try this warming autumnal recipe Enough for 4 large peppers
METHOD
1. Sauce. Place the ingredients in a sauce pan and bring to a boil, stirring all the time. 2. Reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. 1. Filling. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan) Gas mark 4. 2. Combine the filling ingredients in a big bowl. (You can add finely chopped leftover vegetables of your choice; this is a very versatile recipe.) 3. Keeping the peppers whole, cut a hole around the stalk then remove it and the seeds. The hole should be large enough to make stuffing the peppers easy. 4. Stuff peppers with the filling. 5. Sprinkle with Panko breadcrumbs. (Panko is a Japanese crunchy breadcrumb topping, found in the oriental aisle at the supermarket. Or you can use ordinary lightly-toasted breadcrumbs.) 6. Place in a greased, ovenproof dish and bake for 35-40 minutes. Serve with the sauce.

Emma Dale’s goldilocks are going!
E
mma Dale is cutting off her long blonde hair in aid of Macmillan and Cancer Research UK. As well as hoping to raise lots of money, her hair will be going to made into wigs for children with cancer. Its also to support her best friend Julie, currently undergoing treatment who will be our guest of honour on the night. One of the many good things about this event is how a community can come together in support of someone, even if they don’t know them. Barns Green is a great little village with such a fantastic spirit that is very active in its own right. But this is special; Emma, we know, and even though she has not lived in the village very long, she has made an impression on us all. So much so that when she told people about her best friend Julie having cancer, and wanting to cut her own hair off for her friend, everyone has rallied to help. So many local businesses have given their support, not only by auction item donations but
8
their time as well. We need help to get as many people as we can to attend to raise as much as we can. We don’t know what the future holds for Julie but maybe we can help lots of others look forward to theirs. The Big Chop, Auction, Raffle and Disco is on 19th November from 7pm at The Queens Head, Barns Green. We have some great prizes up for grabs from tickets to a film premiere event, a helicopter ride, paintballing, horse riding lessons, naked house cleaning, an organic turkey, luxury Christmas wreath and a whole lot more! We need people to be there on the night. If you are not able to do so then you can give by using the following link http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/EmmaDale So please give us your support and consider this your invitation to join us on the night and help us put this event and Barns Green on the map. The Team, on behalf of Emma Dale (photo, left) and, most of all, Julie (photo, right)

Book reviews
A Good Read Village Tweet welcomes book reviewer Kath Bennett Fight the Good Fight – Catherine Fox The subtitle of this memoir ‘From Vicar’s Wife to Killing Machine’ manages to tell you exactly what the book is about and completely mislead you at the same time. The story of Fox’s quest to become a Judo black belt by the age of 45 is funny, entertaining, sad and educational all at the same time. Fox acknowledges in the introduction that the two main worlds of the book, those of martial arts and the Church of England, can seem strange, if not scary, to an outsider – but you really don’t need to know anything about either of them to enjoy her writing. In order to follow the author’s progress through the grades of Judo, the book is structured in sections: from White Belt to Black Belt, each linked to a different hymn, effectively marrying the two spheres. The tone at first is funny and confessional – Fox is brutally honest about her motivation (and at times her lack of it), and the small humiliations she suffers along the way. Each grading is dealt with in diary form, and the various technical terms are explained with wit and accuracy. Equally, when things begin to fall apart, Fox describes her feelings in a frank and touching way, and the importance of faith, whether in terms of religion, family or self-belief, becomes central. Does she attain her black belt? Well, that would be telling. But from her almost accidental re-introduction to the sport she gave up as a child, and then took a thirty-year break, to her final attempts to reach her goal, Fox will have you gripped (no pun intended).
What Do People Do All Day / Planes and Rockets and Things That Fly – Richard Scarry These books, first published in the 1960s and 1970s, take place in the busy world of Richard Scarry inhabited by sea captain cats, pilot foxes and banana stealing gorillas, and of course, Lowly Worm. They are absolutely perfect for children who want to know how and why things work, and without patronising or over-simplifying, Scarry’s animal characters take us through such processes as flying a plane, a mission to space, digging for coal and putting out fires. Each page is full of detailed illustrations – not for nothing are they set around Busytown, and what is going on in the background is often just as interesting as the main story. There is a mixture of narrative and explanation – so one story might be just that, to be followed by a summary of the water cycle (I swear this got me through GCSE Science!) The different lengths of each section make them ideal for bedtime too, as it is easy to meet the demands for ‘one more story’ without any trouble. Young readers will love coming back to these books again and again, and parents who remember them from their own childhood will love rediscovering them. And the next time you are asked ‘How do you make paper?’ or ‘What happens when they take your tonsils out?’, you will know where to find the answer! Kath Bennett

Kids’ Winter Health… …Naturally
D
on’t let the bugs win the health battle this winter. We have an innate power to heal ourselves as long as we take care and prepare. We thrive in happy, stress and pollution-free environments, with sufficient healthy foods and drinks, fresh air, sunshine, exercise and sleep. However, our immune systems can take a battering at this time of year and children are particularly vulnerable. Vegetables and fruit are essential eating, due to the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals they contain, especially vitamin C and the B vitamins that help deal with stress. They are also alkaline-forming, neutralising acids formed by fizzy drinks, additives and high sugar levels associated with junk food. If your children won’t go for the greens try hiding them by finely chopping and mixing with minced meat. Make smoothies and blend soups. They can even grow their own cress for egg and cress sandwiches. Sprouted seeds contain many more enzymes than just fruit or vegetables. Enzymes are destroyed in cooking so some food should be eaten raw. Try carrot, celery and cucumber sticks. Children need three meals and two-three snacks a day to sustain energy levels. Tiredness reduces immunity. Choose wholegrain cereals for breakfast such as oats, rather than refined sugary cereals. Soak overnight and then top up with honey and hot milk, preferably full fat and organic. Try goat or buffalo milk if your child is
Erratum. A doctor has brought it to Village Tweet’s attention an error in last month’s article by Sue Blain, The Menopause...Naturally. Sue recommends eating organic food to avoid consuming any extra hormones which have been given to farm animals. The doctor correctly pointed out that the UK and EU has banned the use of such hormones in all farming of both organically and non-organically reared meat. We have contacted Sue Blain who has advised that she was making reference to fertility hormones which can be administered to animals. We would like to apologise to our readers if this article was misleading in any way and thank our Doctor reader for bringing this to our attention.

hyperactive and over-emotional, as this may indicate difficulties digesting casein, the cow protein. Add chopped nuts, seeds, fruit and live yogurt. Protein breakfasts will fill them up and aid the brain. Scrambled eggs or sardines on wholegrain toast are healthy options, with fruit for morning playtime. Muesli bars are useful standbys but check for excess sugar, which lowers immunity. Buy the homeopathic remedies, Aconite and Gelsemium 30c, helpful at the first signs of a cold. Give one Aconite pill if your children come home chilled and can’t seem to get warm. Chills lower immunity so stock up on warming spices. In America cayenne was sprinkled in shoes, so lots of cosy orange feet! You may prefer to add it to stews and soups. Homemade chicken soup with drumsticks and extra onions is very nourishing. Add fresh garlic, sage and thyme to boost immunity. Lemon, ginger and honey tea will keep them warm and ease sore throats and coughs, as will Propolis lozenges. The herb Echinacea aids healing and regulates the immune system. Echinoforce by Vogel is suitable for children over five years of age. Give the maximum dose at the first sign of a cold and once a day as a preventative. A vitamin D supplement is also a good preventative. Always follow instructions for children and remember that any aspirin-based cold treatments are unsuitable. Sue Blain, Naturopath

Itchy Impetigo All you need to know about ‘school sores’
I
mpetigo, also known as school sores, is an extremely common skin disease, generally caused by staphylococcus bacteria. What does it look like? It appears as a small, itchy red spot, often on the face around the mouth or nose. It quickly develops into a blister, containing yellow-gold fluid. The blister becomes crusty and weeps, and smaller itchy patches often develop around the first one as the infection spreads outwards. Who is likely to get it? Children, or those who work with them, particularly in nursery or school settings, and especially if they have eczema. Also people with diabetes or compromised immune systems.
How is it treated? GPs generally give antibiotic cream, or in severe cases, oral antibiotics. Remove the scabs and clean the skin and allow to air-dry before applying any cream. Can my child still go to school? As impetigo is highly contagious keep them of school until the scabs have fallen off and the sores are no longer weeping. If they are on oral antibiotics they are generally considered non-infectious after two days of treatment. Is impetigo dangerous? No, generally it’s just a nuisance, but there is a rare side effect called glomerulonephritis. This is a kidney disease. Seek medical advice if the sufferer experiences severe headaches or brown-coloured urine.

Turn On Your Hearing!
W
ouldn’t it be wonderful if you could watch TV with your family without them complaining the sound is up too loud! Well here’s some great news! South East Hearing Care Centres (SEHCC) have moved their head office into Horsham! SEHCC is a group of individual, family-run practices throughout Kent and Sussex. Being independent gives us the flexibility to choose from the world’s leading manufacturers. We offer completely impartial and professional advice and choose the best solution to meet your individual hearing needs. With over 35 years of combined experience, Robert Davies and Matt Cannon are both members of the Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals (AIHHP). This is a group of leading audiologists who maintain the utmost standards within the hearing healthcare private sector. AIHHP demands the highest levels of diagnostic equipment to ensure the most accurate hearing measurement, as well as the provision of an individually tailored solution. Research from Action on Hearing Loss shows there are one in seven people in the UK who suffer from some form of hearing loss. Of these,
four and half million people could benefit from hearing amplification. Imagine what amplification could do for you! The Better Hearing Institute have shown that wearing hearing aids is beneficial to the physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing of not only the wearer themselves, but also their friends and family. On average, wearers are more socially active and avoid extended periods of exclusion, depression and anxiety compared to non-users with hearing loss (Kochkin and Rogin, 2000). As the illustration demonstrates, hearing aids can be truly invisible these days, so come and talk to us and find out what we can do for you! Don’t keep your hearing switched off; let us turn it on! For more information, or to book an appointment, call 01403 218863, email admin@hearingcarecentres.co.uk or visit our website www.turnonyourhearing.co.uk

Little Tweeters!
What is Remembrance Day?
T
he second Sunday of November is Remembrance Sunday, also known as Remembrance Day. At 11am men, women and children all across Britain hold a two-minute silence to remember the millions who have died in war. The silence is observed at war memorials and religious services and shopping centres throughout the country. The Royal Family, along with politicians and religious leaders, gather at The Cenotaph in Whitehall, London for a service (photo, left). A cenotaph is an ‘empty tomb’ or a monument erected in honour of a person or group of people whose remains are elsewhere. What is Armistice Day? Armistice Day is on 11th November. A twominute silence is observed at 11am on 11th day of the 11th month – this is when World War 1, supposedly “The War to End All Wars”, ended in 1918. Nowadays, this anniversary remembers all the people who've died in wars since 1918. This includes World War 2, the Korean War, Vietnam War, Falklands War, Gulf Wars, and conflicts in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Rwanda, Kosovo and others.
14
Why hold a two-minute silence? The first twominute silence was held on 11th November 1919, when King George V asked the public to observe a silence at 11am. This was one year after the end of World War 1. He made the request so “the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead.”
Poison gas was used for the first time in World War 1
Why do people wear poppies? During the week before 11th November, many people wear a paper poppy. Poppies are blood-red flowers which are worn to show others that you are remembering those who died for their country. The reason poppies are used is because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after the World War 1 ended. Paper poppies are used to raise money for all the old soldiers who are still alive. The organisation in charge of looking after these war veterans is called the British Legion. Each year, volunteers sell poppies in streets all over Britain. You can decide how much money you want to give to the poppy sellers. Grahame Pearson Poppy photo: Grahame Pearson

The Firework Code
Enjoy yourself but treat fireworks with respect

night, you will need a torch, a bucket or two of water, eye protection and gloves, a bucket of soft earth to put fireworks in and suitable supports and launchers if you’re setting off catherine wheels or rockets. Think of your neighbours Let your neighbours know if you are planning a fireworks party, they may have pets which should be kept indoors. In rural areas this could include larger animals such as horses and donkeys in stables nearby. In addition it would be kind to let elderly neighbours and families with young children know there may be some loud bangs. Remember – fireworks can be fun, but have consideration for others! Protect Your Animals Although fireworks are fun for us, they are not fun for animals. Most animals get very scared by the lights and noise, so you should keep your pets indoors. This includes bringing in pets that are normally kept outside, such as rabbits or guinea pigs. Close all of your windows and doors and try to drown out the noise as much as possible. And make sure that cats and dogs have name tags on them in case the noise scares them and they run off. Grahame Pearson (based on information on www.saferfireworks.com) Photo: Harold Neal (flickr)

Get the Study Habit!
I
ntroducing good study habits to your child at an early stage will pay off all through their time in education. Routine. Get into a homework routine as soon as possible. Immediately after school is good, after they’ve had a snack and a drink, as they will still be in the right frame of mind. Find out what works best for your child though; some may need to expend pent-up energy first, others may need to chill for twenty minutes. ‘Worst first’. When mental energy is high work on the most difficult subject. Don’t try to cram too many subjects into one session. Talk. Encourage your child to talk through the
28
project with you first. Your child is then more likely to get the work right and won’t get frustrated. Gently ask questions about any areas they seem unsure about. Study station. Designate an area for home learning. Make it as uncluttered and distraction-free as possible. Ensure all equipment required is nearby, so there’s no stalling. No TV. Anything with a screen should be switched off until after studying. Use it as a bribe if necessary. The rule is simple: no games or TV until all studying and homework is completed! The earlier your child gets into a routine the easier homework will become, for both of you.

Feeding Feet
M
any horse owners feed biotin to horses with poor feet but this is only one of a number of important nutrients involved in hoof integrity. Biotin is a sulphur-containing, water soluble B vitamin which plays a part in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism as well as in maintaining healthy hooves and skin. While there is no proven minimum dietary requirement of biotin for the horse, it is thought to be 2-3 mg/day. Beneficial bacteria in the horse’s hindgut manufacture B vitamins, including biotin, and these, plus those supplied by a fully balanced diet, are usually sufficient to meet a horse’s needs. Healthy hooves are the sign The hoof wall is predominantly composed of the protein keratin so it’s clear that, if the diet does not contain sufficient good quality protein, supplying a range of amino acids (including essential ones, like methionine) horn integrity is going to suffer. The energy content of the diet can also be influential and any horse whose diet does not meet his requirements will struggle to maintain condition and well-being with a knock-on effect to the hooves. A range of other vitamins and minerals are involved in healthy hoof growth, including calcium, zinc, manganese and copper, yet it is unwise to consider supplementing the diet with
individual minerals, since complex relationships exist and an excess of one mineral can ‘tie-up’ another, which may become deficient as a result. Strong healthy hooves are a visible sign of a correctly balanced diet that is meeting the horse’s nutritional needs and this can be achieved through the year round feeding of the correct levels of a good quality compound feed or balancer, such as Baileys No.19 Performance Balancer. Horn takes nine to twelve months to grow from coronet to ground so instant results cannot be expected but, if the base diet is balanced and there is still a problem, only then should a carefully balanced supplement of a well balanced diet be chosen. If you would like to discuss your feeding regime for the coming winter months, or y would like more information about any er dl y, Baileys products call our nutrition d sa ha line on (01371) 850247 or email k, ply ge c nutrition@baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk. ta p lla l, su t Vi ce Kindly mention you saw the o la n article in Village Tweet. ho ca tac l p is s c o r o n wil th e c g in op se We sid nd rid sh lea y. ng e a es a g a o r i n in c p d al ca er ru th et t to ad se g s o , u l d e r r n yo r c o we u ho ridi If o fo T y o

Christmas is a Coming Are you ready for it?
I
t can’t have escaped your attention that Christmas is right around the corner. Get ahead of the game with Village Tweet’s pre-Christmas checklist … Clear out the food cupboards. Make room for all those festive goodies. Dispose of out-of-date items and things you know will never be eaten. Clear out the toy cupboards. Encourage your children to sort out toys they no longer play with to give to charity. It will make space for Christmas gifts and hopefully teach the children compassion for others. Order your meat early. Farmers’ markets and food shops will be packed out by the first week in December.
Puds and cakes. These need to be made early to give them time to mature. Stir up Sunday is traditionally the time when Christmas puddings are made. It’s the last Sunday before advent and this year it’s on 20th November. Write the Christmas cards early. It’s bit of a chore but get a few written every week in November. Then, come December, you can relax and feel virtuous. Check guest lists. It’s worth checking who might be planning to spend Christmas with you well in advance so you can be prepared. Ask whether anyone is vegetarian, vegan or has any dislikes, allergies or intolerances. Forewarned is forearmed!

Faces of Billingshurst – St Mary’s Bellringers
I
was recently invited to attend bell ringing practice at St Mary’s Church in Billingshurst. They ring on Sundays, Remembrance Day, Midnight Mass, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and Easter services and at weddings. Practice is every Wednesday from 7.30-9.15 p.m. The bell ringers are referred to as ‘a band’. The Tower Captain is responsible for the tower and the bell ringers so that bells can call people to church and allow a period of thought and reflection as the peal is heard. The Steeple Keeper looks after the bells and makes sure everything is working. Not satisfied with ringing their own bells they’ve been known to prowl the South East

looking for other bells to ring. Either en mass or individually. They are a fun bunch, seem to spend most of their time laughing and made me feel very welcome. Not only do they practice ringing, they also like a pint or two down at the Six Bells afterwards. A very social group. It can take up to six months to train someone to a reasonable standard and they would love to hear from anyone who is interested in joining. The members range in age from teenagers to an octogenarian. The Fabulous Shadows UK & Europe Number One tribute band from Horsham
I
n 2008 Ritchard De Santini from Adversane won The Federation of Master Builders of The Year for his oak-framed buildings, garden and garage structures, one of which is situated near The Limeburners pub in Billingshurst… “It was one rainy Monday in September 2008 that I had my eyesight tested and was rushed into Redhill hospital for a body and brain scan. The Following Wednesday I was presented in London with my two awards for my design and construction work with Oakleaf Design and returned home to find the results of my scan … I had been diagnosed with three white lesions in my brain, glaucoma, arthritis and to top it all off Multiple Sclerosis, so I focused on my work. I got a contract to do a structure and the week before Christmas, just as I was finishing the job, I rolled a two-ton dumper over with me in it. I had a narrow escape, breaking three toes in three places. I did nothing for the next three months. “On deciding to change my life in my late forties I sat down and wrote a theatre script, only having learned to play guitar in 2004 mostly The Shadows instrumentals. In March 2009 I formed The Fabulous Shadows. We rehearsed hard for the next few months. “In February 2010 we put on our first show at Eastbourne Winter Gardens followed by The Alexandra Theatre, Bognor Regis. “Friday 2nd July saw a full house at Worthing Pavilion. The next day we were sent a personal invite to Sir Cliff Richards 70th birthday at The
Dorchester Hotel in London. Dressed in tuxedos we spent the next 16 hours having a five-course dinner with Sir Cliff, Gloria Hunniford and DJ Mike Read amongst others. We have achieved more in three months than most other tribute bands do in a lifetime, having met bass guitarists Brian Licorice Locking, Alan Jones and the late great bass guitarist and legend Jet Harris. “With our shows we raise awareness and money for The Alzheimer’s Society in Horsham. Anita Avery, the community fund raiser, comes with us whenever she can. The Alzheimer’s Society is close to my heart and is the most under-funded charity in the UK. One in three people over the age of 60 suffer some form of dementia. “This year we were invited back to Sir Cliff’s 71st birthday at the newly refurbished (at a cost of £200 million) Savoy hotel. “We have our last show on 4th November at The Chequer Mead, East Grinstead. Tickets are selling fast. “As for the future, the UK theatres have booked us for a lot more shows in 2012. Our new and exciting news for 2013 is that we are going on tour with Winner of Stars in Their Eyes and the world’s number one lookand sound-alike Cliff Richard, Jimmie Jemain (www.jimmiejemain.co.uk). “All of our tour dates are on our website www.thefabulousshadows.co.uk and band members’ backgrounds are under special features page at www.retrosellers.com. “Follow your dreams, it’s never too late.” You can contact Ritchy on (01403) 780874.

The Unbreakable Bond Royal British Legion, Billingshurst
A
s we come once more to Remembrance Sunday we are often asked as to what the real role of the Royal British Legion might be in this 21st Century. Many tasks come to mind but perhaps our ‘finest hour’ was in May of this year when our Prime Minister announced that the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant would become law. The Covenant is not a new concept. There has long been an understanding that the nation owes a debt of gratitude to our Service men and women. The news was a major victory for the Royal British Legion, which has been campaigning for the Nation to ‘Honour the Covenant’ since 2007. It is vitally important as many serving and exserving personnel are struggling to get the deal they deserve particularly regarding family life, healthcare, education and housing. People, of course seem to be more aware of the Forces community nowadays because of Remembrance Sunday 13th November Parade and Dedication. War Memorial at 11am followed by Drum Head Service in the Community and Conference Centre. All welcome Songs of Praise Service. Trinity United Reformed Church at 6.30 pm. All welcome. Iraq and Afghanistan as they in the media all the time. But it should not have to be that way. It should not have to be forced in front of them to make them understand it. Now the Covenant’s principles are to be enshrined in law; we expect to see the Armed Forces community and their needs in the public mind long after the current conflicts have ceased. Both Nationally and locally the Royal British Legion will continue its campaign to raise awareness in order to maintain the message so that the next generation ‘will remember them’. Colin M Banks, Branch President/Chairman Billingshurst
Please give generously when buying your poppy – 2011 is the 90th birthday for the Royal British Legion.

Hedgecutting John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
H
ave you ever muttered away to yourself at been stuck behind a tractor down some narrow country lane as it grinds a hedge into submission? I must admit if done well it makes a beautiful job of it. (The hedge that is … not at delaying you … although it does a pretty good job of that as well.) It even smashes the trimmings into chippings that fall through the hedge to act as a mulch for the coming winter. But, oh, how much skill has been lost over the decades. It reminded me of a day, long ago, when, as a young lad at college, we were transported one autumn morning to be shown how the job should then be done … A dozen of so lads bouncing around in a trailer behind a tractor along with the tutor and an assortment of tools, we duly arrived at a long thick hedge that was partnered by a swathe of bracken and course thick dry grass. We dismounted and selected a sickle and a sharpening stone. Then followed a half hour or so of learning how to sharpen the tool by driving the point of the sickle into the top of a post so that it was firm, safe and steady for the stone to hone its edge. The inevitable cuts were plastered over and accompanied with comments about our cack-handed abilities, and the tutor moved us on to the task ahead. He showed us how to cut ourselves a ‘hooky stick’ from a forked branch so that we could hold the grass and bracken at the correct angle to allow the blade to do its job without the loss of someone’s hand or leg and how to trim the hedges branches to a neat straight line. All went well until break time. We sat on the trailer and ate our sandwiches and drank our water and, in the climbing temperature, we all
started to sweat. This included the tutor. “Right, lads,” he said. “As it’s still very calm I think we could try and show you how to do a controlled burn.” This sounded fun, although the tractor driver gave a rather pronounced groan and muttered something under his breath as he rolled and lit yet another cigarette. (The last one by now just a damp stump where it had absorbed the permanent drip from his nose). So we all trouped into the nearby copse and cut ourselves some long swishy topped branches. This apparently was “just in case”. The instructor carefully lit a match and set the long dry grass alight beside the hedge. We followed the burn, swishing our branches if the fire moved outside its designated path. For half an hour or so all went well. Then a breeze sprang up. Then disaster. The dry bracken and grass roared up. Well, we did our best, but it was pretty clear in a very short space of time that we had lost control. So, off went the tractor and instructor for help – no mobiles in those days – and we stood back to admire the conflagration. Now, the hedge ran parallel to a very quiet country lane. Usually it would be deserted for hours on end. Not that day. Where all the spectators came from I’ve no idea, but by the time the local fire brigade arrived we had collected quite a crowd. After the firemen had done their job and the engine had departed we surveyed the resulting mess. Around 50 yards of prime hedge was no more and a very embarrassed instructor ushered us all back to the trailer, where a grinning driver celebrated our return ride by lighting yet another roll-up which he enjoyed with obvious relish as we bounced back home. Oh, the joys of learning something new. Wonderful. John Nash Photo: Christopher Walker (flickr)

Little Tweeters!
“Here today, gone tomorrow” Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …
“T
here’s a swallow about,” said Bill one May morning, and sure enough there was. “One swallow does not a summer make,” replied Sally wisely, but the next day there were two. Two lovely swallows gracefully circling the sky above the barn and goat shed. Not long after Sally said, “I’m really surprised. They’ve nested in the goat shed.” And they had. Their nest had been moulded with mud to a beam high enough to be safe from the ground and concealed enough to be overlooked. Before long there were babies, four of them. Their hungry mouths were always wide open . Poor Sally had to be careful as the parent birds swooped in and out of the shed. She had to be careful because if she was there they didn’t stay, they just swooped out again and the babies went hungry. She had to fit her farm chores around the swallow babies’ needs. But she didn’t mind. It was lovely having them around catching insects in flight and poking them into little squawking mouths. It wasn’t all that long before the fledglings started to fly. Carefully a little bit at a time, they practised and practised. That didn’t stop them though from still continually demanding great quantities of food from their parents They would line up on the pitch of the roof and the parents would swing down, poke food into a mouth and
42
fly on without stopping or pausing at all. After no time at all there were six lovely swallows soaring in the sky. Later on in the summer, Sally said, “I think they are nesting again.” Sure enough, along from the first nest on the beam another one had appeared. She was worried. “I hope they have time to fly well before they have to go.” “Go?” asked Anne, “Where do they go?” “They migrate to South Africa,” Sally replied. “They go in late September.” “Hmm, yes,” said Anne. “I see what you mean; they don’t have too much time to prepare do they?” Strangely enough, the second set of babies seemed to grow and start to fly as if they were in a fast-forward film. Around the middle of September they had joined their parents and brothers and sisters in the late summer sky. Now there was a family flock dashing about. Then one day they weren’t there any more. Without so much as a “Goodbye” or a “Thank you for having us” they had gone. The family missed them, and prayed they would be safe in their long journey across the Sahara desert. But they too had to get busy as the nights were drawing in. Later as the temperature dropped they thought about the swallows again and hoped that they would return in the spring – return to their home in that small farm near Billingshurst. Yvonne Fleece

Saturday, 26 November Inspector Drake and the Black Widow The Sundial Theatre Company brings this David Tristram comedy to Billingshurst as they tour the south of England. The play is a clever spoof of a 1920s country house murder mystery. This farce works because it has, at its core, a bona-fide mystery plot with a final twist. There’s a high body count – though the majority are killed accidentally by the police investigation of the original murder! I’ve seen the Sundial Theatre in action; they’re barking, brilliant and brimming with enthusiasm! Tickets £10 and £7 concessions, which will be on sale from late October.
