N

ovember is perhaps best known for Guy Fawkes. And why not? 5th November is fun, with families and friends gathering round a bonfire clutching sparklers and cups of hot chocolate. Later, on the 11th, there is the more solemn occasion of Remembrance Sunday. Wear your poppy as a mark of respect. The dark evenings and frosty mornings serve as a reminder that Christmas is fast approaching. If you run a local shop, restaurant or pub, Village Tweet can help promote your business this festive season. Grahame Cover photo: Guy Fawkes masks ready for their guys on 5th November. Lentil & Preserved Lemon Soup

A warm and tasty soup to serve INGREDIENTS at your bonfire night celebrations 3 tbsp olive oil 3 onions METHOD 5 cloves garlic, 1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onion then cover and cook, stirring occasionally until the onion is soft. Add the garlic, ginger and spices and cook for a couple of minutes. Then pop in the remaining ingredients except the yoghurt and coriander and bring to a simmer. 2. Cook gently uncovered for about an hour, stirring occasionally and adding more water if it starts to look too dry and thick. It’s done when the carrot and potato are tender and the lentils have broken down. Taste and season but remember that there will be a lot of salt from the preserved lemon. 3. Serve hot with a dollop of yoghurt and a few sprigs of coriander.

Slinfold Golf & Country Club Celebrates Local Sportspeople

T

he sporting enthusiasm generated by the Olympics shows no sign of waning – a brief survey conducted by the Local Government Association shows that there has been a surge in demand at sports facilities up and down the country as Olympics-enthused Brits want to become involved in sport. Slinfold Golf and Country Club are keen to encourage local sports club members and their immediate families to keep up the Olympic momentum by offering a free 3-day pass to their superb range of facilities, and applicants may use the spa pool, steam room, pool, gym and fitness classes. Andy McNiven from Slinfold Golf and Country Club says, “It’s fantastic that London’s Olympic Games have inspired so many people of all ages to take up a new sport and improve their fitness. Even those already involved in sport are setting themselves new challenges and goals to maximise their fitness and improve their overall health. The local area has a superb range of sports clubs and organisations for every age group and we want to hear from anyone who is involved with these. “Slinfold Golf and Country Club is keen to join in the post-Olympics enthusiasm by offering this

JG Holistic Therapies – Reflexology for all What is Reflexology? A non-intrusive complementary health therapy, Reflexology is a natural healing technique based on the principle of reflexes in the feet and hands that correspond to every part of the body. Reflexology is thought to relieve tension and promote the natural function of the related areas of the body. What to expect… At the first session, you can expect an introductory chat with the Reflexologist. It will take around 1 hour 15 minutes, subsequent treatments will generally last 45 minutes. The room is often dimmed and tranquil music is played in the background for your relaxation. The therapist will use their hands to apply pressure on your feet or hands; you may feel areas of transient discomfort but generally the experience should be relaxing. Effects & Benefits After a treatment you may well feel relaxed, tension might be reduced, you may sleep better and you may notice a feeling of improved mood and general wellbeing. Although Reflexology

does not diagnose or treat specific ailments by definition, it has been found over time to relieve symptoms or ease pain/discomfort that have manifested themselves physically in the body – either as a result of stress, trauma or disease. Reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe. A Reflexologist gives a very individual treatment, which works holistically. With increasing stress it is really important to make time for our own healthcare needs which contribute to the overall wellbeing of the body, mind and soul. As with all holistic treatments it may help to free the flow of energy throughout the body. After a few treatments, you might note a sense of wellbeing and calm. Feedback to your Reflexologist is useful as this may show the response of your body to each treatment session and will help the Reflexologist to adapt a treatment plan to your own needs. Find a Cycling Buddy!

T

here is no better way to see some of our most beautiful villages than on a bike. Some of us chose to do so on a recreational basis while others take a more athletic mindset. One thing is for sure, the health benefits of cycling as a form of exercise are well proven. Now you can also make this a social pastime. A new, free website – www.cyclingbuddy.com – helps members find other members to go cycling with. Whether for fun or for training, the site encourages people of all backgrounds and abilities to take up cycling. CyclingBuddy.com launched in March and already has over 9,000 members. Its founder is Tony Piedade (pictured) is, unsurprisingly, himself a cyclists. Explaining what motivated him to launch this site he said, “Like most sports, cycling takes a bit of thinking about, preparation and training. It’s great fun, but it’s also very easy to just

ditch the bike and resort to driving the car. I found that I started to get bored of cycling. I didn’t want to go to a cycling club, but I did want to find people near me who might be up for a cycle ride now and again. That is why I created CyclingBuddy.com. There are millions of people out there that are looking for the same thing, so I thought I’d try and provide the platform to facilitate it.” Joining is very simple and once registered you are immediately able to connect with local cyclists. You can see from their profile what kind of cycling they are into, what kind of pace or speed they cycle at and whether they are a recreational cyclist or a more competitive one. To sign up, visit www.cyclingbuddy.com. Tony Piedade 07974 667573 tony@cyclingbuddy.com

Tired All The Time Should you seek help?

I

t’s 7am. The alarm goes off and your eyes snap open. You leap out of bed feeling refreshed and ready for anything. Does this sound like you? Or are you more likely to hit the snooze button, roll over and try to grab another ten minutes’ sleep before you face the day? GPs are reporting that more and more patients complain of having no energy. So much so, that the syndrome now has its own name – tired all the time, or TATT. If you often feel you’re flagging, the most important thing is not to ignore it. TATT is common, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to do something about it. There are many different causes of fatigue, and it’s always a good idea to start by speaking to your GP. If you feel overwhelming exhaustion, which gets worse with activity and does not improve with rest, you may be suffering from myalgic encephalopathy (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). A cure has not yet been found, but there are treatments and self-help measures that can ease the symptoms. Your doctor will also be able to test for other medical problems that can cause tiredness, such as anaemia, thyroid problems, food intolerances or diabetes. Most cases of TATT are due to psychological problems, such as depression and anxiety.

Traumatic life events, stress and money worries can also cause fatigue. Talking about your problems may help, and your doctor could refer you to a counselling service. If you’ve ruled out these causes but are still feeling flat, there are lifestyle changes that can help. It sounds obvious, but it’s essential to make sure you’re getting enough good quality sleep. This might be easier said than done, but make it a priority for a few weeks and see how much better you feel. The Royal College of Psychologists’ advice is to go to bed and get up at the same time each day. Avoid napping, and try a soak in a warm bath before you go to bed. Reduce your stress levels by building some relaxation time into your daily schedule. This could be something as simple as listening to your favourite music or meeting friends for a chat. Diet can also play a part in determining your energy levels. Try eating small snacks throughout the day, rather than one large meal in the evening. Avoid alcohol and drink more water. Cutting out caffeine will also help, but do it gradually to avoid getting headaches. Finally, you may not feel like it, but exercising is another proven way to fight fatigue. Even a quick 15-minute walk around the block will give you an energy boost. Alex Brown

Guy Fawkes night / About the house

Host the Perfect Bonfire Party

F

or many years my parents hosted an annual bonfire party that attracted friends from far and wide. The planning and organisation were minimal, and in many ways that was its appeal. It afforded us all the opportunity to meet together informally to enjoy the most basic, simple things in life: food, warmth and companionship. For me, the perfect bonfire party is based around the Three Fs – flame, food and fireworks. Let’s start with the bonfire. The way you build a fire affects how long it will last and the amount of heat it gives off. It’s best to arrange kindling (e.g. twigs, cardboard and small pieces of wood) in a teepee shape over a base of tinder (e.g. paper, wood shavings or fire lighters) and then add more bulky pieces of wood and logs which ignite more slowly but burn longer. Light the fire about 20-30 minutes before the party is due to start so that it is burning brightly when your guests arrive. Don’t forget to include a Guy Fawkes. Why not hold a Guy Fawkes competition with prizes for the best or the funniest. No party is complete without food. November weather is traditionally cold and damp, so warm everyone up with a mug of home-made soup. We always encourage our guests to contribute to the food table. This usually results in a large and varied selection of goodies, ranging from delicious hot dogs with fried onions (is there anything on earth that can beat that smell?) to trays of parkin, treacle toffee and toffee apples – wonderful, traditional, British grub! Fireworks are a must of course. As fireworks cost a small fortune don’t be shy about asking your guests to bring along a box. Even with a substantial financial

outlay, your display is unlikely to be hugely impressive, but half the fun is the anticipation anyway and it’s amazing just how much enjoyment can be gleaned from the most humble box of bangers. Sparklers are a must, especially if you have young children attending, so be sure to have a good supply at hand, matches to light them with and a bucket of water to extinguish them. Always remember the firework code and stay safe at all times. Other tips we have learned from (sometimes bitter) personal experience is to make sure that carpets are protected if people are going to be in and out of the house, especially if the ground outside is wet, and have a supply of torches on hand if your bonfire is located some distance from the back door. For me, the key to hosting a successful bonfire party is to set everything up then stay relaxed and let it run itself. Then you should have a roaring good time! Debbie Singh-Bjatti

Guy Fawkes night / About the house

Rocket Man Firework Safety and Etiquette

H

osting and planning a party can be stressful, what with checking there’s enough food and drink to go around and organising the entertainment. Fireworks are a brilliant way to entertain guests, but whilst they may look pretty in the night sky, they can also be extremely dangerous. Make sure that in between shopping for party-poppers and paper plates, you also have the right safety equipment needed for your display. Gloves and eye protection are a must have, as well as a taper for setting off fireworks at arm’s length – you don’t want to burn off your eyebrows by mistake! Make sure that everybody stands well back, and do not approach fireworks that have been lit – even if they haven’t gone off – as there’s a chance they still could. Store your fireworks in a metal box, away from flames, so that your party doesn’t go off with the wrong kind of bang, and always keep a bucket of water nearby to put out sparklers safely. Last of all, don’t forget to tell your neighbours in advance that you’re having a party so that they

aren’t inconvenienced by the noise, and if your party is not on November 5th itself do not set fireworks off after 11pm as it’s against the law and you could be fined. On November 5th you have until midnight. Most importantly, make sure you have fun, enjoy yourself, and stay safe! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Local sale raises £615 for Macmillan

O

n Saturday 29th September I held an event in memory of my late husband Albert, who died in December 2011, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. My friend Lindsey and I rearranged my home into a shop/gallery and displayed pictures, embroideries, cards and soft goods that we had made; there was cake (mostly chocolate) and a lucky dip, thanks to generous donations from friends, family and neighbours. We have both suffered from breast cancer and sadly lost our husbands to cancer. We are therefore committed to Macmillan and the services and support it offers. Also, we have both found solace and purpose in our creative pursuits. We spent the previous day creating the venue, which was finalised with balloons and banners on Saturday morning. Between 10.30am and 3.30pm over 50 people visited. The sun shone, so our guests enjoyed refreshments in the garden. Unfortunately they couldn’t listen to the trickle of the waterfall as an electrical fault earlier in the

week had threatened to jeopardise the event! Visitors came from as far as Hampshire, Northants and Brighton and as near as next door. I was thrilled that Joe Clarke, the Macmillan nurse who supported my husband and me, came as well. I even met a neighbour who had lived nearby for twelve years whom I had never met. Also many old friends came together. There was a good deal of browsing, purchasing, chatting, and taking refreshment. The total takings from the event are £615 so far. We have been offered a different venue in another part the county for a future event; I am now planning for my next event at The Weald school, Billingshurst Winter Fayre on 17th November to support another cancer charity. As well as supporting a good cause and having a great social occasion it has helped me regain the enthusiasm and excitement I used to get planning events within my professional life before my retirement! Book reviews / About the house

A Good Read November’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett One Million Tiny Plays About Britain – Craig Taylor How often do you hear someone complain that they never have time to read? Too often? Or perhaps you are guilty of this yourself? If so, Craig Taylor’s superb book is a godsend. The title is more or less an accurate description of the contents – although there are slightly fewer than a million of Taylor’s carefully crafted snapshots of British life: ‘dramatic haikus’, perhaps, as Richard Eyre suggests in his introduction. The format of each play is the same: a brief sentence to set the scene, then the dialogue takes over. The longest runs to three or four pages, the shortest to one sentence! A range of scenes is covered – from two women in a queue at a Surrey bank, to a farmer in Kent speaking on his mobile phone from a tractor, to a late night on Newcastle Quayside. The characters are diverse too – young and old, drunk and sober, flippant and serious. However, it is the perfectly observed sharpness of speech that makes this book stand out. At first, you could believe that Taylor has merely been in the right place at the right time and recorded everything that he heard. Lines like ‘I once took Diana Rigg’s coat – in her pocket was a packet of Polos. That’s an elegant mint!’ And ‘There’s more to it all. More than Swansea,’ sound so authentic that you believe in the speakers and their lives, however brief and insignificant their conversations seem to be.

Some of the plays rely on a growing sense of unease – the nervous customer in the barber’s shop – whereas others are out and out funny – two Wonder Women fighting in the street. Every ending is well judged and either rounds off the play with a ‘reveal’ or a cliff-hanger – always showing, never telling. Ideal for reading in short bursts or longer chunks. Well worth a look. Winnie-the-Pooh – AA Milne ‘Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin.’ So begins this magical childhood story, much loved, told and retold, adapted and revisited – but always worth reading in this original version. If your only knowledge of Pooh and his friends comes from the Disney cartoon version, then you are in for a treat. While the characters are the same and the stories recognisable, Milne’s telling has so much more depth. At times, it is laugh out loud funny – Rabbit in particular makes me giggle every time he replies to a knock at the door – and children will quickly read along with you, even if some of the sentence structure and vocabulary is complex. Every child deserves to have this book read aloud to them at least once before they are six and I bet you anything you will be asked for it again, and again. The word ‘classic’ is sometimes used lightly, but here it is truly deserved.

Garden Tweet!

To tidy, or not to tidy?

I

’ve heard people in the past say that gardening is nothing more than outdoor housework, and I’ve had a few people say to me that they’d love a ‘tidy garden’, but can a garden be too tidy? I enjoy the contemporary look of a formal garden with clean lines and tightly clipped planting, but I am also pleased to see more naturalistic planting, examples of which we saw earlier in the year at the Olympic Park. It would seem though, that my choice of ‘tidy’ plants is not always cherished by others. “This plant is far too messy for me,” yelled a voice from deep within the herbaceous border. It came from a woman on a mission to hack down the flower spikes which had shot up from her Stipa gigantea. I sat in the conservatory and thought, “thank goodness I don’t still live at home!” As a garden designer, people pay me to advise them what they should grow, be it something suitable for the location, something fashionable, or something that will complement the colour of their new jacquard curtains! But it wasn’t until I sat there and watched my mum tear out those delicate flower spikes that I realised not everyone likes the same plants, or has the same understanding of a ‘tidy garden’. Compact plants with a neat growing habit have to be the best of both worlds, because you don’t have to prune against its natural growth habit, therefore making yourself less work in the garden. For this reason evergreens are the perfect choice, as they don’t shed leaves onto the lawn in autumn and are generally slow growing. Shrubs such as Aucuba japonica ‘Rozannie’ and Euphorbia ‘Blackbird’, or the more colourful herbaceous

GEORGE A NICHOLLS NCHArb

Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturn’ which never needs staking, just ‘chopping’ once per year. With this in mind, will I be cutting back and tidying up the garden this November? Is it right to sweep up the leaves from the borders, denying hedgehogs of the insulation crispy leaves provide, not to mention food the worms will drag into the soil. Is it fair to snip the seed heads from the ornamental grasses; to bin the beautiful dried Allium skeletons, or slash the Verbena bonariansis to the ground, depriving the birds of the seeds? I don’t know, but what I am proposing is to leave well alone for at least another month and enjoy the range of oatmeal brown colours for a little while longer. And as for mum… well, let’s just say the compost bin is already overflowing! Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net Photo: Olympic Park garden by Jenny Sanderson

Jobs to do this month: Sow sweet peas in a cold greenhouse. Plant wallflowers without delay. Lightly prune roses to prevent wind rock. November is the best month to plant tulip bulbs. Bury holly leaves with bulbs if squirrels are a problem .(Wear your gloves though!) Resist pruning hydrangeas – the dead flowers will protect bulbs from the frost. Clean out bird nesting boxes – wear gloves to avoid any parasites.

Remembrance / Garden Tweet!

We will remember them

hy do we wear a poppy? Scarlet poppies grow wild all over Western Europe wherever the soil has been disturbed. The battles of the First World War churned up such vast areas of earth that millions of poppies germinated and bloomed, often around the bodies of the fallen soldiers. A Canadian surgeon called John McRae wrote the poem In Flanders Fields in which the poppies symbolise the deaths of those who fought. It is a haunting memorial to those soldiers who have died in any war. Why do we have a two-minute silence? It was on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month that the guns of World War One – The Great War – fell silent. Four years of

fighting and devastation finally ended. The following year ceremonies of remembrance took place on what was known as Armistice Day. An Australian journalist, Edward George Honey, first proposed a respectful silence to remember the dead. He wrote a letter to the London Evening News which was brought to the attention of King George V. The king subsequently issued a proclamation which called for a two-minute silence. These days Armistice Day is known as Remembrance Sunday and is a chance to honour the fallen soldiers of all conflicts. Sarah Davey Photo: Grahame Pearson

Nigel Price Organ Trio at North Hall, Loxwood

J

ust back from their recent tour, winner of the best jazz ensemble category of the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Awards, the Nigel Price Organ Trio are right on top of their game appearing once again in Loxwood on Wednesday, 14th November and joined by Simon Bates on Saxophone. Their last appearance in Loxwood in March last year was simply a huge success. Led by swinging guitarist Nigel (see photo) and featuring the UK’s top Hammond Organ player Pete Whittaker and fantastic drummer Pete Cater. The Unhappy Groom Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …

H

umphrey looked with curiosity at what was happening. A truck and trailer had arrived and Jeb his owner was approaching with a feed bucket. Humphrey lifted the fence with his nose and pushed under it. Humphrey did not respect fences; he was a very big pig and just pushed through or under them. Then he put his nose under the gate and lifted it off its hinges and let it fall on the ground. Jeb and Jack jumped back out of the way but Humphrey was persuaded, by another bucket of food, to climb the ramp into the trailer. He began to munch the nuts as the trailer door was pulled up and secured. Jack jumped into the truck and before he knew it Humphrey was on his is way to meet his new wife… The ride in the trailer was Humphrey (left) meets his quite comfortable and it wasn’t long before the trailer stopped. The ramp was lowered, and Humphrey surveyed his new home and his bride to be. He slowly ambled down the ramp into the pen. But Bill and Jack had lowered the metal part of the ramp onto the electric fence so that the ramp was ‘live’… the first step onto the ground at his new home gave Humphrey an almighty shock and he squealed loudly with outrage. The he leaned against the fence and got another zap. Humphrey was not impressed. At the same time Bill and Jack were trying to raise the ramp which was still live. After much to-ing and fro-ing they finally succeeded but not without a few outraged squeals of their own! Meanwhile Dottie had come out of her ark and went up to Humphrey to check him out. After they sniffed one another, Humphrey thought she would be pleased to meet him, but she just snorted and walked back into the ark. Humphrey followed and there was an awful lot of Accountancy & Taxation Services n n n n n n n n n n n

snorting and grumbling. At last Dottie came out of the ark but Humphrey stayed inside and made himself comfortable. At tea time he pushed Dottie away from the food and then went to bed in the ark. He wouldn’t even let Dottie back into the ark. Fortunately it wasn’t cold so Dottie was quite comfy outside the pen in a bed of thick warm straw. But she was not impressed with her new husband. He was a bit of a bully. That was Friday. Over the weekend, Humphrey tried again to get to know Dottie but she still didn’t want anything to do with him, even though he let her back into the ark. On Monday, Twiglet who had been put in the adjacent pen to give Dottie some peace from her, was supposed to go to the bride to be ‘Holiday Camp’, but just as she was about to walk up the ramp (not live this time!) she turned and saw her mother. “Mummy!” she cried. She pushed Sally out of the way and ran to her mum. Sally decided Twiglet would not go ‘on holiday’ so now there were three! And all of them slept together in the ark. Over the next few days, much to Humphrey’s delight, Dottie became more friendly with him and he thought at last his bride would be ready to marry him and start a family. One evening, he was snoozing away in the ark and Dottie was lying contentedly beside him. “At last,” thought Humphrey, “she will be my bride”. Just as they were getting a bit closer together, an indignant little squeal announced the arrival of Twiglet who pushed her way between them and snuggled up to her mum. Poor Humphrey! What a Gooseberry! Twiglet the Piglet wins again! Yvonne Fleece Photo: Grahame Pearson

Online Shopping More sound computer and IT advice from Simon Thomas

W

ith Christmas looming up I thought I would delve into my favourite pastime which is online shopping, I am already hunting down bargains on eBay for my children’s Christmas stocking. Online shopping – how does it work, and are there any problems you should be aware of? You’ll need a credit or debit card, an email address and a secure password. This is something you can make up, something unique to you and something nobody should be able to guess. A different password for each site you use is ideal. Also, to buy from eBay, a PayPal account is necessary and easy to set up. Online shopping is easy. Go to the site on which you want to shop. Click on the item you want, click ‘Add to basket’ and then stop. Check that the web address in the browser starts with https (rather than http) – this means they’re using some sort of security when handling your money. I then go to Google and put the item I am thinking of buying into the search area and once the results come in click the shopping option on the left side of the browser to see if there are any retailers that are selling it cheaper. If there are, check them out. If

not, go back to your original site and carry on with the purchase. Don’t forget to check the delivery costs especially if you are buying from eBay. With big electrical items always consider any warranties that are included. I have often bought from John Lewis online as they offer a 5 year warranty on their TVs for no extra cost and as they operate a price match (only valid against national retailers with physical shops though) you may be able to get them to reduce the price on an item. One of my favourite online sites is Amazon.co.uk as they sell practically everything and usually at a good price and if you do not like an item or you have a problem with it they have the most efficient no quibble returns system I have come across. So, you enter your details, complete your purchase and wait for your goods to arrive. It’s as straightforward as that! For everyday grocery shopping many supermarkets offer an online shopping service with delivery and most are excellent. Bear in mind that you won’t be able to sort through fruit and veg to look for the best, and the ‘best before’ dates will be out of your control. Simon Thomas (techgeek@tech-geek.co.uk)

Looking back on the magic of a summer’s eve John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

must confess that the time of day and period of year that I like the best is that warm balmy summer evening. That time when a coat can be forgotten and you can just sit in the quiet of the gathering darkness and enjoy the sounds of the countryside as the day gives in to the closing night. On my farm I have the good fortune to be able to boost the pleasure by the addition of the reservoir who’s banks give my ageing frame a more comfortable position than a flat grassy field. The evening’s midges have ceased their diligent searching for my blood and only the occasional nip comes from the odd one that has a little more determination in its character and managed to fight its way through to more hidden parts of my person. He is forgiven and then dispatched forthwith. The ducks are still just as noisy as ever. I have a suspicion that they sleep on a rota system so that a continual gentle chatter between them can continue as they patrol their territory. Now and then a commotion will occur as one strays too near another’s area, quickly to settle once more to just the background voices and slight splash of disturbed water. (In the winter they gather together and spend the whole night stirring a small section of water so that it keeps ice free… a sure way to keep Reynard from his supper.) It’s never long though before the other sounds of the night start to penetrate the senses. As the last rays of the sun sink down behind the woods’ edge there is always a number of pheasants giving voice that the night is approaching and it’s time to find a roost, and that eerie sound of a vixen’s shriek still sends a shiver down my spine. There is something so human like in the sound

38

that it makes the hairs rise on the back of the neck. Just opposite the farmhouse for several years now we have had the good fortune to have a couple of nightingales take up residence. One has taken possession of a section of high hedgerow while the other occupies a small copse some two hundred yards further on. On evenings such as this they fill the air with the most wonderful sounds that you could ever wish for. They encourage each other to greater and greater effort as each tries to out sing the other. Trills rise and fall and cascades of notes tumble together in rising numbers, filling the moonlit night with magic. Once they start you just cannot leave. In fact I have been tempted on more than one occasion to try and join in – they just fall silent for a few minutes, notifying me of their disgust, and then resume their song as if I wasn’t there. It’s when the moon comes out that the real beauty of the water can be fully appreciated though. Moonlight shinning across the dark, still water with that silver sheen and a light mist starting to form as the day’s warmth meets the cooler night air. Fabulous. Now, though, the nights have drawn in and the chill of the winter creeps nearer to the window. The nightingale has fallen silent, the young ducklings have reached adulthood and those pheasants that have managed to avoid the guns seek deeper shelter in the chill of the night. The fox still sends her cry through the frosty darkness and on moonlit nights the quiet water can still command a few minutes of contemplation. Then the cold reaches for these ageing bones and I give in to the call of the warmth of a glowing fire and a glass of the amber liquid. I have heard that some folk find the countryside too quiet for them… that there is nothing to do… that it’s boring. How wrong they can be, how so very wrong. John Nash Photo: heathzib (flickr)

Common Feeding Problems

H

orses and ponies are living longer and healthier lives today, and many horses are still in regular work well into their twenties. With old age comes wear and tear to the teeth and it is not uncommon for veteran horses and ponies to have worn or even missing teeth. There are many things owners can do to help a veteran horse get the most from its diet. Some horses lose the ability to chew hay and this can be replaced with short chop chaff type products or with a high fibre mash that is easily eaten. There are many senior feeds on the market, some of which contain prebiotics to help with gut function and glucosamine to help joint mobility. Older horses also benefit from as much turnout as possible to keep the joints moving and good quality turnout rugs to keep them warm. Veteran horses and ponies will also benefit from a six-monthly dental check. Poor doers Those horses that find it hard to put on and keep on weight are termed poor doers and can cause their owners lots of worry. Feeding as much hay or haylage as the horse will eat is the best start for a feeding plan for one of these horses. If possible, ensure the horse has access to decent grazing or provide hay or haylage in the field while turned out and make sure the animal isn’t being bullied off any food. Using a higher calorie conditioning feed can help in some cases and high oil feeds such as micronized linseed can be useful to increase calories while keeping meal sizes manageable. Never feed more than 2kg of concentrates in one feed. Another important point with poor doers is to have the horse checked for gastric ulcers. These are becoming increasingly common in horses today and symptoms include irritability, weight loss, reduced appetite and poor performance. Speak to your vet if you are concerned about the possibility of gastric ulcers, a high fibre diet will lessen the risks of equine gastric ulcers. Fizzyness and excitability Some horses can become very excitable in winter, often caused by a combination of reduced work, increased stabling and too much feed! Feed such animals a high fibre diet; most horses in light work will have their needs met by good

40

quality hay and a vitamin and mineral supplement or balancer alone. Feed companies are very good at making us feel we have to feed the latest coarse mix – we don’t! If your horse does require hard feed try to use cubes where possible as they are lower in starch than coarse mixes; there are a host of low sugar, low starch feeds on the market today to help minimise excitability. Turning the horse out as much as possible is also a big help in keeping them more level headed! Good doers and laminitis Please don’t become complacent about the dangers of laminitis during the winter season, a late autumn flush of grass can be as dangerous as spring grass. If you suspect that your horse or pony may have laminitis you must CALL YOUR VET IMMEDIATELY. Laminitis has several causes, one of the most common is over-feeding which can lead to obesity. Feed according to work load, avoid cereals and stick to a forage based diet. Restrict and control grazing by the use of muzzles, electric fencing, or stabling your horse or pony for part of the day. Soaking hay for twelve hours will reduce its nutritional content but will still provide bulk. Good quality oat straw can also be mixed with hay to provide a low calorie ‘belly-filler’. Feed forage in small mesh hay-nets to make restricted rations last longer. Feed a ‘balancer’ or vitamin and mineral supplement to help meet any of the shortfalls of a restricted ration. Aim to have the horse or pony coming out of winter on the lean side so you have a good chance to control its weight and prevent obesity in the spring and summer. ry Rug as lightly as possible to encourage le d the pony to use up some fat stores if it d y, sa ha is overweight. , k ly ge Jeanette Douglas. Southlands Lock gets its gates

W

ork to restore Southlands lock, near Loxwood in West Sussex, on the Wey & Arun Canal moved closer to being realised when, at the end of September, a new set of lock gates were delivered to the site. This marked the final stages of a programme of work to rebuild the lock that has taken two years and more than 5,000 hours of volunteer labour. Restoration of the lock will enable the Wey & Arun Canal Trust, which has been working to restore the canal for over 40 years, to extend the navigable section of the route further northwards. The Trust has currently restored a section around Loxwood and operates boat trips on this section which currently stop at Devil’s Hole lock to the south of Southlands lock. The £44,000 lock gates were constructed at Hargreaves Lock Gates yard in Halifax, West Yorkshire and were fitted in a four-day operation which started on 24th September. Now that the gates are in position more volunteer labour is needed to construct the gate-

With the lock fully restored, the volunteers will not have a chance to rest as the restoration focus will then turn to the next lock to the north – Gennets Bridge lock – for which the Trust is starting to raise funds. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust would like to thank the landowners for their generosity in allowing access across their land during the construction work at Southlands. The lock is more than a mile from public roads and this support has helped to ease the work on the challenging project. If you would like to visit the lock please park in the WACT car-park which is located behind the Onslow Arms pub on the B2133 in Loxwood. From there it is a level walk along the towpath from the car-park and under the B2133 road to Southlands lock. Please wear suitable footwear. Sally Schupke, Chairman, WACT www.weyandarun.co.uk
