ou can ‘age’ someone by asking them who the Blue Peter presenters were when they were a child. For me it was John Noakes, Valerie Singleton and Peter Purves. Where is this going? Well, every year John, Val and Peter (and presumably their predecessors and successors) would remind us to keep pets indoors on Guy Fawkes Night. Although many ‘organised’ displays seem to increasingly be held on anything but the Fifth, it’s still good advice. Remember, remember the fifth of November… but let us also remember the eleventh – Armistice Day aka Remembrance Day. Buy your poppy and wear it with pride. Autumn 2013 Update
cubittandwest.co.uk billingshurst@cubittandwest.co.uk
Well here we are almost into the Festive season and all the shops are full of goodies. I don’t know about you but preparing for Christmas always seems to get left until the last few weeks in my house. This year though I have been asked by my son Matt and his partner Hayley and granddaughter Kheanha please could we visit their house in North Wales over Christmas and teach them how to cook Christmas dinner as this will be their first Christmas in their new house. So I now have to be a bit more organised and I have actually already ordered the turkey and bought some presents. We all know buying a property is one, if not one of the biggest decisions you will ever make so it’s important just like Christmas to plan ahead and take a little time preparing a strategy for the weeks ahead. There is always the danger to rush into a purchase when you think you have found your dream home and I appreciate that, I’ve been in the property industry for over 15 years and I know how happy (and a little scared) someone can be when buying a new home, even rushing decisions to get the house you want, I cannot stress enough how important it is to take your time. We have recently been in a recession; however there are signs of improvement. House planning permissions are up by 50% this year. Mr Miliband has promised if he is in power to build 20,000 new homes a year and of course Mr Cameron surprised everyone and rolled out his Help to Buy scheme a few months earlier than expected. The latter is definitely causing a ripple in the property industry with
portals such as Zoopla and Rightmove reporting increased traffic since the announcement. So whether you are thinking of taking your first step on the property ladder or climbing higher and upsizing it seems like now is as good a time as any. So at Cubitt & West we thought it would be a great time to hand out a little advice when it comes to selling or buying your next home. You need people you can rely on; we here at Billingshurst will do our best to make your house sale and purchase as easy as possible, we will also give you impartial and jargon-free advice on issues you should consider when selling your home and provide insider tips on how to present your home in the best possible light. In finding your new home all our staff have great local knowledge too, such as the best schools and transport links because we know it helps you make the right decision about

location, I also reward the members of my team for exemplary customer service. You can trust us to always use our most experienced staff to negotiate on your behalf and land the best possible price for your home. As the sale progresses we hope you’ll find we have the advice or service to overcome any obstacle. Please pop in to the office and have an informal chat or give us a call on 01403 780807 and we will pop to see you. -Nikki James, Billingshurst Branch Manager

The Perfect Xmas Pud METHOD
1. Mix together all the dry ingredients. 2. Stir in the eggs and brandy and mix together thoroughly. 3. Scrape the mixture into 4 x 1 pint (450ml) or 2 x 2 pint (1 litre) lightly-greased pudding basins. 4. Put a circle of baking parchment and foil over the top of each basin and tie securely round the rim with string. 5. Make a string handle by tying both round and over the basin, to make it easier to pick out after cooking. 6. Put the basins in a large steamer of boiling water and cover with a lid. 7. Boil for 5-6 hours, topping the boiling water up from time to time if necessary so that it doesn’t boil dry. If you don’t have a steamer, you can use a large pan and stand the basins on inverted saucers placed in the base. Pour in boiling water to come a third of the way up the sides of the pudding bowls. Cover and steam as before. Cool. 8. Change the baking parchment and foil covers for fresh ones and tie up as before. Store in a cool cupboard until Christmas Day. 9. To serve the pudding on Christmas Day, steam for 2 hours and serve with brandy butter, rum sauce, cream or home-made custard.

Fireworks / Food and drink
The Magic of Fireworks
ireworks date back to the 7th century and are thought to have been invented in China. The first fireworks in England were displayed at the wedding of King Henry VII in 1486. Now, as well as being an integral part of Bonfire Night celebrations – a warning that Guy Fawkes’s crime of treason must never be forgotten – fireworks can often be seen at New Year, Birthday and Wedding celebrations and frequently form the finale for major events. Fireworks come in many shapes and sizes and new types are being created all the time. Some of the many varieties are: sparklers, cakes, firecrackers, cherry bombs, rockets, jumping jacks and Catherine wheels. A rocket can reach speeds of 150mph and reach as high as 200 metres. A sparkler burns at a temperature over 15 times the boiling point of water. The different effects created by fireworks have names such as ring, spider, peony, palm and horsetail. The variety of colours and noises also thrill many of us. There are now a rainbow of colours and sounds that include bangs, crackles, humming and whistles. So what happens within a firework to cause us such excitement? Each firework is a precisely formed assembly of chemicals, carefully calibrated to produce a particular effect. Fireworks consist of stars, small clay or
dough-like lumps or cubes 3 to 4cm in diameter, packed into cardboard compartments within the firework shell. Stars contain a blend of oxidizing agent, reducing agent, metal salt colouring agent and binders. When ignited, the stars produce both sound and light effects. The power needed to lift each firework into the air is provided by the highly exothermic combustion of black powder. The key to firework success is to trap the heat and gas in the bottom of the shell, which is positioned in a launch tube or mortar, until the trapped gas pressure builds to such a force that when it escapes, it hurls the firework high into the air. A firework is ignited by lighting the main fuse. This simultaneously starts both the fast action fuse, and the time delay fuse. The flight of the firework is powered by a fast burning wick. Where the wick ends, it meets the high explosive components of the firework. In this second stage, there is an instantaneous detonation producing both a loud explosion and a bright flash of colour. The black powder liftcharge is calculated to exhaust itself precisely when the slow-burning, time-delay fuse reaches the first compartment packed with light-producing stars and black powder. The tremendous booms heard are the result of the rapid release of energy into the air, causing the air to expand faster than the speed of sound which produces a shock wave – a sonic boom. Age UK Horsham District says “Thank You” as local knitters smash this year’s Big Knit target
O
ver the past month Age UK Horsham District has been gratefully receiving packages filled with woolly knitted hats from local residents as part of the ‘Big Knit’ campaign that Age UK runs with innocent smoothies each year. innocent donates 25p for each hat that is provided to help fund Age UK’s services during the winter. This year the target for Age UK Horsham District was 1,500 hats and they would like to extend a huge thank you to all those that took part this year as not only did they hit the target, they smashed through it with local residents sending in well over 1,700 hats raising over £420. Community Fundraiser Lawrie Mallyon said, “The response has been fantastic. We’ve had hats from individuals all over the district as well as knitting groups submitting literally bags full of their creations. The level of imagination and different designs has been great and I would like to express my thanks to all those who took part and encourage them to keep knitting beyond the deadline.” The Big Knit campaign is in its tenth year and is a regular fixture in the ‘Spread The Warmth’ campaign launching in November (when you will start to see the hats adorning innocent bottles in stores). Spread The Warmth focuses on supporting older people throughout
the winter when they are at increased risk. This year there will be a variety of opportunities for the public and local businesses to support Age UK Horsham District’s range of vital services, many of which do not receive any regular funding. If you haven’t had a chance to send in your hats, Age UK Horsham District is keen to let knitters know that they are happy to continue receiving them all year round to give them a head start on next year so there’s no need to stop. You can download the patterns from their website www.ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk. For more information on the ‘Big Knit’ or to get involved or make a donation to ‘Spread The Warmth’ please contact Age UK Horsham District on 07910 385926 or visit the website. Log onto their facebook page to see some of the knitted creations: www.facebook.com/AgeUKHorsham District. Please continue to send any completed hats or wool to Age UK Horsham District, Lavinia House, Dukes Square, Horsham, West Sussex, RH12 1GZ. Book reviews / Health and wellbeing
A Good Read November’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett The Cuckoo’s Calling – Robert Galbraith Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few months, then you will know that there is actually no such person as Robert Galbraith; Galbraith is really JK Rowling. Much has been made in the press of Rowling’s ‘secret’ authorship of a crime novel. The key question, however, should be “is it any good?” And the answer is a resounding “yes”. While Rowling was understandably angry that her cover was blown by some careless gossip, the fact that this shot the book to the top of the bestseller charts undoubtedly widened its potential audience. Even before this, however, the story had been critically acclaimed by a range of fellow crime writers, and it is easy to see why. Cormoran Strike, the central character, fits well alongside the range of eclectic private detectives that populate the genre. An army veteran, with a chequered past, physically and mentally scarred by his experiences, he is believable and likeable from the start. We know enough to keep us guessing, but never fully get inside his head. The supporting characters are equally well drawn – Robin, his receptionist and almost-assistant, acts as an ideal foil – and the setting is given careful treatment. By chance, I read the book while staying in London, close to Strike’s fictional office on Denmark Street, and was almost able to trace his steps at times. The novel itself is well plotted – again, no surprise – and moves at a strong pace as Strike investigates the death of Lula Landry, model and style icon. Strike’s own past is explored through

hints and flashes, which contrast with the celebrity haunts of Landry and her associates, adding an interesting counterpoint. Many reviewers have claimed that Rowling’s authorship is obvious here, but I would disagree, and had I not known, I would not have guessed. In any case it is immaterial. Cormoran Strike is a million miles away from Harry Potter, and the audience for each book is completely different. This is crime fiction, well plotted, engaging and leaving you in immediate hope for a return of Strike. What more can we ask? Charlotte’s Web – EB White For some readers, the very title of this book brings a lump to the throat. From the first line, “Where’s Papa going with that axe?”, to the last, it is beautifully told and instantly memorable. The story of Fern’s relationship with Wilbur, the runt she saves from her father’s axe, and of Wilbur’s relationship with Charlotte, the spider who convinces the world that Wilbur is ‘some pig’, the tale rewards reading and re-reading. Like all the best stories, the central message of Charlotte’s Web is the power of language. Charlotte really is ‘a true friend and a good writer’ both at once. For young readers, it also shows some of the realities of life and of growing up – the comic scenes involving Templeton the rat, for example, and Fern’s brother Avery, are interspersed with some harsh messages. If you can, track down an edition with Garth Williams’ illustrations, which complement the story perfectly. And try not to give away the ending as you read aloud – but be careful to have some tissues to hand.

Health and wellbeing / Private hire Billingshurst Iron Man!
B
illingshurst Osteopath, Jon Meadows, recently took part in a grueling Iron Man completion in Kalmar, Sweden to raise money for the local branch of Macmillan. There were over 2,000 athletes from 40 countries competing in this challenging event. Jon undertook a 3.8km swim in the choppy waters of the Baltic sea, a 180km bike ride around the island of Oland and into the mainland north of Kalmar and, to finish, a 42.2km run (marathon equivalent) looping round and through the city itself. Jon, who has previously competed in Iron Man events in South Africa and Bavaria said it was his toughest race to date, made harder by the very gusty conditions but he was delighted to finish in a respectable time and raise over £1,400 for Macmillan.

Funding will boost canal restoration and flood alleviation in Bramley
P
resentation of a cheque from the Guildford & Reading Branch of the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) will not only boost restoration of the Wey and Arun Canal but could also help provide flood protection for houses in Bramley. Robin Higgs from the IWA presented the £500 donation to Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) Trustee Philip Oliver at the Trust’s recent AGM. The money will go towards funding work to reconnect the canal with the River Wey at Gun’s Mouth Island and reconstruction of the canal through Bramley. “I am delighted with the donation,” said Philip. “We have had a major flood study done on the proposed canal route around Bramley, where we hope to be able to get permission to use Cranleigh Waters. If we can gain permission for this, then the canal could help provide flood

However, there is a considerable amount of further survey, study and consultation work to do before we can start construction and the IWA donation will help fund that.” Philip said that this work will take at least another year to complete and will be followed by a series of four appeals for funds to carry out the construction for each stretch round Bramley. “WACT members and the public always want to see action on the ground but this new route is, in effect a brand new canal so we are having to treat it as a major infrastructure project,” he added. Wassail this, then? John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
T
he memories of summer are fading fast and the time of mellow fruitfulness melts into the mists of early winter. What a summer though. At long last we have had a period where you could, with some form of confidence, rise in the morning, ignore the trousers that lay discarded on the floor beside the bed, and slip into that pair of ancient shorts and faded T-shirt. I say ‘with confidence’, but I do refer here to the weather, not to the look that you portray as you gaze mournfully at your reflection in the mirror. The years can be rather spiteful when it comes to exposing more of yourself than you would normally do, and the quiet smirk that creeps over your partner’s face as you put in an appearance at the breakfast table can speak volumes. Still, we should not be deterred, but make the most of the sun’s bounty while we have the chance. The winter months beckon and the trees are well on their way to closing down for their annual rest. Now, due to the glorious summer we have enjoyed, there should be a marvellous amount of leaves to keep our muscles toned and our bodies warm as we rake the gardens for the umpteenth time and await the mud and slush that must surely follow. Such is life… Que sera sera. I think that the farming society must have been relieved that the summer managed to cling on into the latter part of the year. Harvesting has been kinder than in some years and the fruit farms have certainly benefited with a glorious crop of both soft and top fruit. The cooler nights of September brought on the colour change in the fruit and heralded the transformation of starch to sugar that gave the late apples their deepening flavours. Now the orchards are silent and await their winter haircut and the cereal fields are falling to the plough and the seed drill. In the more northern fenlands the rich, dark soils are still full of winter vegetables and they will fill our tables with their bounty through to the spring. Where would we be without that compulsory portion of sprouts with our Christmas dinner? November can be a dreary month. The first frosts of the winter, darkening nights and cold damp mornings. Guy Fawkes does his best to

liven up the first week for the children and the many organised displays and bonfires around the villages bring a wonderful glow to their upturned faces. I must confess that when my late Mother-in-Law was reluctantly confined to a wheelchair when we took her out, it was to her great credit that she giggled along with the rest of us when, stationed outside some shop in town, I would address passers-by with the challenge, “Penny for the guy?” Bless her! (Mind you, we never got any donations!) I do wish the old tradition of the Wassail could be revived. I believe that it is still carried on in some parts, especially down in the Somerset areas of cider production, but it has been a while since a local farm has had one as far as I know. It was carried out in the orchards in early January and varied as to content according to the traditions of the area. In general it was an excuse to have a good old winter’s night party. Much cider would be consumed, dancing and singing would be compulsory and firing shotguns into the branches of the old apple trees was supposed to encourage the fertility of the orchard for the coming season. I have read somewhere that hanging toast soaked in cider onto the trees branches was also a guaranteed method of appeasing the orchards deity and assuring a good harvest. As I have said, I’m pretty sure that it was just a super way of uniting the villagers and giving them a chance to enjoy themselves in the bleakness of a winter’s night. Many years ago the late Prince Tomislav of Yugoslavia, who owned the orchards next to ours, held such an event among his trees. A wonderful evening was held by a huge crowd. Morris Men jingled bells, music and laughter filled the cold frosty air, and liberal amounts of hot spiced cider helped keep us all warm. By the time we all staggered our weary way across the darkened fields to the comfort of our homes all that could be heard was the laughter of departing friends and the buzzing in our ears from the fusillade of buckshot that had been discharged into the innocent branches of the Prince’s Coxes. Now that’s how a winter evening should be spent! John Nash Photo: www.cidermugs.co.uk

Winter Sun
I
t was back in August when I was walking around Parc de La Tamarita, a beautiful green public space in Barcelona (see photo), when I stopped to rest from the heat and to look at a selection of ornately arranged planting beds. It occurred to me that although intensely beautiful, lush, calm and extremely relaxing, this garden had a distinct lack of something we try and cram our gardens full of back at home – flowers. In fact, in this garden there wasn’t a single one. It was a wonderful view that made me think to myself, “Must a garden have flowers in order to be beautiful?” I know the debate, “Must a garden contain plants to be a garden?” took place earlier this year at one of the annual gardening events, but why is it we feel it necessary to pander to the needs of such a fussy lot (the flowers I mean, not the gardeners). The dead heading, staking, pruning, feeding and general titivating we have to do to keep our blooms in peak perfection is time consuming and expensive, but to some I know, a garden without flowers is like a bride and groom without a wedding cake. At this time of year it can be tricky to find a garden with flowers, and as we progress into winter we will find the quest increasingly difficult, which is why we rely on evergreens and the skeletons of structural shrubs within our gardens to provide colour. Finish planting up pots and baskets with winter flowering bedding plants. Don’t forget to cover cabbages, broccoli and other brassicas with net if pigeons are a problem. Breaking Boredom
ith winter almost on top of us many horse owners’ thoughts turn to preventing boredom during the hours the horse spends in his stable. Some horses find being confined to their stable for long periods of time stressful and can develop vices such as weaving, wind sucking and crib biting as a result. The most obvious answer to these problems is to turn the horse out as much as possible, but this is not always as simple as it seems, for instance flooded or frozen paddocks, or veterinary treatment requiring box rest may make turnout impossible. Stable vices are a collective name given to some of the stereotypical behaviour some horses can show when stabled. There have been huge amounts of research done on these behaviours and their affect on the horse. Some yards are very strict about using weave grills, cribbing collars and other equipment to prevent the horse from exhibiting their vices, while other yards are very relaxed about them. Some people believe that horses copy vices such as weaving from others, although there are mixed views on this and research is still ongoing. Common stable vices… Weaving. The horse rocks from side to side swinging his head and neck over the stable door, some horses weave at feed times or when other horses leave the yard to be ridden or turned out. Weaving can create uneven wear and tear on the feet and severe weavers can suffer lameness as a result of the behaviour. Some owners have reported that the use of stable mirrors has helped their horse to weave less. Weaving grills are the most common way to try and prevent the vice, although a severe weaver – like my old ex-racehorse who would simply stand back and carry on weaving regardless! Cribbing and wind sucking. The horse will grab onto things such as the top of the stable door, or a feed manger with his front teeth and proceed to arch his neck and gulp in air making a clearly audible noise. This vice will create uneven wear on the teeth and can result in colic and weight loss. Cribbing and wind sucking have been linked to Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome, which is surprisingly common in the average riding club horse and not just restricted to competition and race horses. It is thought that the cribbing action produces more saliva
to line the stomach from acid attack. If you suspect your horse has ulcers contact your vet who will be able to diagnose and treat them. Cribbing is an extremely difficult habit to break and some people opt for a cribbing collar or put a foul tasting substance such as Cribbox onto the surfaces the horse is cribbing on. Box walking. This vice is often seen in anxious horses. The horse will walk round and round his box repeatedly this may because some horses to find keeping weight on difficult and makes keeping a nice bed almost impossible. Stable mirrors have again proved successful in some cases. Being able to see and touch other horses is helpful in preventing this vice. The most important thing is to provide the horse with plenty of forage; chewing is psychologically beneficial to the horse as well as helping to keep the gut healthy. For good doers good quality oat straw can provide plenty of fibre without the calories. Most horses and ponies will be happy with hay or haylage provided on an ad-lib basis. Dried grass forages can also be fed to add interest and variety to the diet, also root vegetables such as carrots, Swede and parsnips can be tucked inside haynets or hidden in the bedding is good to encourage the horse to browse and forage for food. Snack balls are also a very good way to keep horses entertained while stabled and can be filled with low calorie treats or high fibre cubes. For horses and ponies where sugar is not such a problem then hanging treats such as likits are very entertaining and youngsters in particular love to nibble at these! If possible make sure that the horse can see other horses when stabled; some of the best stables I have seen have a window at the back as well to allow the horse a more interesting view from his stable. Sometimes a horse will be stressed in one particular box and be much improved when moved to a different stable or in some cases even a different yard. Happy horsekeeping – until next month! Volunteers urgently needed Our exciting project, MentorMorph, is about to begin in Wisborough Green Primary School, with the kind permission of Mrs Emberson, and her colleagues. If all goes well, there may be scope to roll the project out in Billingshurst. Our social aim is to bring careers and employment skills information to the children in Key Stage 2 years, through after-school workshops in which the children are mentored by our trained team of Mentors. This project will be the pilot and outcomes for this will be used to secure funding to roll this service out to neighbouring schools. At this stage we rely upon the very valuable contribution of volunteers, who will also be given: Extensive training, expenses, their own MeMento (a MentorMorph endorsed diploma), and the opportunity to become a paid Mentor. We are looking for help in the following areas: l Mentoring
l Administration
l Bid writing
If you can spare some time, and would like to be a part of our ground-breaking work with the children, please contact: Pam Dennett, Founding Mentor, p@morphyourfuture.co.uk, 07883 565551

Getting the most out of your printer and ink Sound computer and IT advice from Bax Computer Services
I
f you are about to buy or have just bought a new printer there are a couple of things you need to know‌ Costly Cartridges. Printers might be cheap but their cartridges aren’t. It’s a simple manufacturer’s trick – they sell the printer at a relatively cheap price and then the cartridges – which they also sell and recommend that you use – cost a fortune. So, as well as doing your homework on the printer, do some research on the cartridge prices. And, no matter what they say, you don’t have to buy the manufacturer’s original cartridges. You can use what are called ‘compatible’ cartridges. They are much cheaper and, generally, if you buy them from the right place, they are just as good as the original ones. We like to use a site called www.refreshcartridges.co.uk. They are extremely reasonably priced and very fast at getting your cartridges out to you. (No, we don’t get any kick back and we don’t take any responsibility for your use or experience of that site.) Set Up Drivers. Most new printers come with their own drivers – this is usually a CD that you insert into your computer and it sets the printer up on your system. Just follow the instructions, it’s quite simple. If you have lost the driver disc to your printer then most of the manufacturers have them on their websites. Just go to the support or downloads
section of their website and follow the instructions. You will probably end up getting a newer version of the driver this way too. Print Quality. Most printers give you the option to change your print settings – this means that when you print a document you can choose to print it in colour or black and white, or you can choose normal, fine or fast/draft quality. Black and white and fast or draft will obviously save you money as the printer will use less ink. And if your printer offers duplex (double-sided) printing, then choose this as well, it will save you paper. We find this useful when printing out large documents that are just for us to read – rather than a presentation or a document for a customer. Low Ink & Cleaning. Lastly, if your printer indicates it is running low on ink, don’t change your cartridge until it actually stops printing. Most printers are designed to tell you early, in the hope you will change the cartridge straight away. This is another manufacturers trick to get you to buy more cartridges and you should just ignore it. And if you start to see gaps in the printing or white lines running across your page then your printer heads probably just need a good clean. You can usually do this from the printer itself – just hit the menu key and looking for test print or cleaning. Bax Computer Services

A new friend! Late August, given heavy rain and sun For the full week, the blackberries ripen. At first, just one a glossy purple clot Among others, red, green hard as a knot. You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet Like thickened wine: summer’s blood was in it. From Blackberry-Picking by Seamus Heaney
H
ow fitting to use the opening of Heaney’s great poem recalling his childhood growing up on a farm in the Irish countryside. What a splendid summer we have had, following a late wet spring. The fruit trees and shrubs burst with colour and offerings ready to pick. Blackthorn trees display their dusty blue-black berries – anyone for sloe gin? Crab apple trees cobble pathways with yellow-green fruit – what about crab apple jelly? Brambles bend blackberries dangling syrup-filled morsels for passers-by and dog-walkers! Laika isn’t happy though when my usual 3 mph pace shrinks dramatically as I reach repetitively for these tantalizing droplets buried in our woods and hedgerows. Yes, she is off the lead once again after her stitches and antibiotics and my bill! And, yes, she is back to her playful self and has just found a new friend courtesy of a decayed larch
lapped panel. Imagine sitting quietly enjoying a good book, a cup of tea and a couple of Rich Tea biscuits amiably enjoying the last of the summer with Mrs M who is deep into her study of the Bible when a bleached-blonde vision shoots past the window pursued by a large German Shepherd – enter Luca! Laika’s new acquaintance is a pure white hound of indeterminate breed that belongs to our new neighbours. Clearly adept at exploiting weaknesses in fences and with the climbing ability of an Alpine ibex, Luca is a lovely dog and a perfect playmate for Laika. The rough and tumble of play in the garden was followed by a shared chicken-wing lunch and an inspection of the house with Laika leading her friend into the kitchen, dining room, lounge and upstairs to the bedrooms! Through the increasingly large gap in the fence, myself and Mrs M were able to introduce ourselves to our delightful new neighbours. Luca, it appears, is a rescue dog from Spain who shares a home with three cats! Needless to say we have advised the newcomers about Laika’s loathing of the feline species and we look forward to providing an introduction to dog-walking in our marvellous county.
