s you read this, summer will be a distant memory but, as a glance at the What’s On pages will show, our villages are showing no signs whatsoever of going into hibernation! Events of course include some with a spooky Halloween theme but there are plenty more besides, whatever your age or interest. As always, I can only publish information on events I am told about so if you are planning an event and would like it included in the main magazine (space permitting) and/or What’s On pages please be sure to e-mail details to me in good time. The area’s longest-established, independent family firm
Your local independent family estate agent Fowlers Billingshurst office has an emotional start to the month. Pictured here in the middle of the husband and wife team at Fowlers is Carole Neal who made the monumental decision to retire from the firm after six years loyal service. Keith and Lori Hutchinson are seen here wishing Carole all the very best for the future and thanking her for helping to give Fowlers the excellent reputation it undoubtedly has. Carole will be missed by everyone. Happy retirement Carole.

Cheesy Onion Soup As the clocks go back take comfort in our onion soup with bubbling cheese
METHOD
1. Peel and thinly slice the onions. 2. Heat the butter in a medium-sized saucepan. Add the onions and sugar and fry gently over a low heat for 10-20 minutes, stirring frequently. The sugar will caramelise to a nice golden brown coating on the onions. Be careful not to let it stick and burn though, especially towards the end. 3. Add the stock and soy sauce, and season to taste with salt and black pepper. Put a lid on the pan and simmer for approximately 30 minutes until the onions are soft and starting to disintegrate. 4. Grate or thinly slice the cheese. Divide the soup between two heatproof bowls. Float a slice of toasted bread on top of each bowl of soup, and top with the grated or sliced cheese. 5. Grill for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbling (hence the heatproof soup bowls!) 6. Serve with more crusty fresh bread.
Preparation time: 15 minutes. Cooking time: 1 hour. Serves 2
INGREDIENTS 12oz/350g onions (can use a mixture of brown, red and white or all the same variety) Butter for frying 1½ tsp Demerara sugar 2 tsp dark soy sauce 1 pint stock (chicken is lighter, beef heartier) 2 thick slices lightly toasted bread 2oz/50g cheddar or Gruyere cheese

Marketing Superstar presents Masterclass free at BilliBiz–The Show 2014
O
n 26th August 2014 multi award-winning marketer, Dee Blick, will take the stage at Billibiz–The Show 2014 to present her marketing Masterclass, Sales by the Barrel Load – Shoestring Style! She is also opening the Show. BilliBiz–The Show is the highly successful business-to-business exposition that is being run for the fourth successive year by the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce on Thursday 16th October 2014 from 10.30am until 3.30pm. It is staged in the Billingshurst Centre and showcases the diverse range of businesses, products and services in and around Billingshurst. The Show attracts over 200 business people and it is free to attend and the companion professional workshops are also free. Keith Paul, Chairman of the Organising Committee, said, “The Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce sets out to create opportunities for its Members and BilliBiz–The Show is one such example. In this case we welcome non-members too as our overarching mission is to see ‘a prosperous Billingshurst’. We are thrilled that Dee Blick has accepted our invitation, and her support endorses the strength and track record of BilliBiz–The Show for small and medium-sized enterprises”. He added, “Exhibitors should contact the Chamber now to avoid a last-minute scramble”. Dee Blick says that “for any small business, marketing is not an option – it’s vital if sales are to soar”. Using a powerful blend of small business case studies and practical marketing tips from her latest bestseller (The 15 essential Marketing Masterclasses for your small business – see Village Tweet, March 2014), Ms Blick will share how operators of small businesses can grow their
6
operations on a shoestring budget, how they can avoid the mistakes many small businesses make, and what foundations should always underpin shoestring marketing campaigns. She’ll show how companies can create a powerful, theory-free marketing plan, why they don’t need a USP to be successful, and why being brilliant at the basics is more than good enough to drive sales. More information on Dee Blick’s Masterclass can be found on the BilliBiz–The Show website, www.billibiztheshow.co.uk. This year’s Principal Sponsor is the Slinfold Golf and Country Club, one of the Chamber’s most outstanding meeting venues. Supporter Spotlight sponsors at Billibiz–The Show 2014 are Ice Media, experts in website design and social media; Smart Biz Solutions, specialists in delivering bespoke and flexible business support; Foundry Press, masters in high quality, good value, environmentally friendly printing; Blue Flame Design, professionals in branding, design, advertising and marketing; and Utility Warehouse, providers to over 500,000 homes and small businesses throughout the UK of home phone, mobiles, broadband, gas and electricity. Keep Kirdford & Wisborough ‘Green’ – update
T
he application by Celtique Energie for an Exploratory Oil/Gas well on land at Boxal Bridge in Kirdford on the border with Wisborough Green Parish was unanimously REJECTED by WSCC Councillors on the advice of their planning officers on 22nd July. Following this decision, Celtique Energie now has three months, i.e. until 22nd October, in which to appeal. In the meantime, a parallel application by Celtique Energie for a similar borehole is yet to be considered at Fernhurst in the South Downs National Park by the SDNP Planning Committee on 11th September. The National Park Planning officers have similarly recommended REFUSAL. We hope that the members of the SDNP Planning Committee also support their officers’ recommendation. 3,591 signatures were received on petitions (both electronic and paper) urging West Sussex County Council to declare the area a FRACK FREE ZONE. This proposal was put forward on the basis of a recommendation made in a report issued by RSPB et al which analysed the designated areas for landscape and wildlife and the water stressed areas. Clearly, this county
8
rates very highly on both issues. WSCC now has to arrange for the full Council to debate the issue – date and venue yet to be announced. At Balcombe, local residents took legal advice and called for a Judicial Review of the decision made by WSCC Planning Committee on 29th April which sanctioned an examination of the contents of the borehole already drilled there by Cuadrilla. Strong arguments need to be made which show that the decision was not taken in the correct way. It cannot just be the case that you don’t like the decision, rather it is the process which has to be shown to be flawed. This case is due to be heard in the High Court on 6-7th November. I urge people to continue to watch the KKWG website www.no-drilling.co.uk for further updates or ring Jill Sutcliffe on (01403) 700395. Air Ambulance appeals for volunteers
life-saving charity providing a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) in the South-east is appealing for more volunteers in Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Members of the public can help out in a number of ways including placing and emptying collection boxes, selling merchandise at fundraising events and representing the charity at cheque presentations. They can also help raise awareness of the service as public speakers by giving talks to local groups, clubs, schools, societies and other organisations. Other roles at Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance include store and street collectors, drivers and couriers, and office administration. Head of Volunteer Resource Amy Hamer said, “As a charity, we cover a region in excess of 3,500 square miles with a population of 4.5 million people. “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the organisation and absolutely vital to our operation in terms of raising funds and awareness. “They can give as little or as much of their time as they like, and all new recruits will receive an
induction and training in each of their chosen roles.” Volunteering is an opportunity for people to ‘give something back’ to the community, meet new people and gain work experience. The air ambulance’s volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and age groups and include former patients, bankers, teachers, pilots and a magician. Paul Skelley, a former business intelligence manager, said, “I’ve been a volunteer for just over four years and because of my background in training it was an ideal opportunity to use these skills with the air ambulance. “It’s an exciting role and a superb opportunity to do something worthwhile for a very worthwhile organisation.” To find out more about becoming a volunteer go to www.kssairambulance.org.uk/involved/volunteering, call Amy Hamer on (01622) 833806 or email amyhamer@kssairambulance.org.uk. Canal restoration reopens historic Wey & Arun Lock
N
early 200 years after Southland lock on the Wey & Arun Canal was built, restoration work is complete and boats can use it once again. The official opening of the restored lock was marked by a special event organised by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust (WACT) on Saturday 21st June to celebrate completion of the threeyear project. More than 150 people attended the event to see Mr Simon Carter officially open the lock and hear music from the Friary Guildford Brass Band before celebrating with a barbecue lunch. The lock was originally built between 1813 and 1816 but was demolished in the 1930s when the canal had fallen into disuse and many of the bricks reused on other local building projects. Reconstruction of the lock was a major challenge for the Trust, not just financially but also logistically as the site is located more than a mile from the nearest public road. WACT chairman Sally Schupke said that the Trust is very grateful for the help of the local landowners in easing the logistics of the work. “None of this would have been

possible without the enthusiasm of the adjacent landowners. Their support made all the difference,” she said. More than £125,000 was reduced from the cost of the £500,000 reconstruction work thanks to the Trust’s workforce of volunteers led by Project Manager Eric Walker. Nonetheless, the project still called for the engineering expertise of others including Burras Piling, the main contractor for the piling behind the new lock walls and Hargreaves Foundry in Halifax who made and fitted the lock gates. With Southlands lock completed, the focus of the restoration work will now move northwards. WACT is working on major restoration schemes near Bramley at the northern end of the canal and near Dunsfold at the summit of the waterway. For more information visit www.weyandarun.co.uk. Book reviews / About the house
A Good Read October’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett Dark Road – Ian Rankin and Mark Thompson As Rankin says in his introduction, Dark Road was written in response to a query about why we see crime fiction dominating television and bestseller lists, but not on the stage. “It started,” he says, “almost as a dare”. Following a widely praised run at the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh, the script has now been released in book form. Initially, there were some groans from die-hard fans who had hoped for, or expected, the inclusion of Rankin’s most famous creation, John Rebus. But while the characters here inhabit the same world, Rebus is not present even as a shadow, and the play works better for it. Reading a script is different to reading a novel, and it is clear that Rankin found the process different too. Here the dialogue has to carry and develop the characters. The central character, Isobel MacArthur, is as successful on the page as reviews suggest she was on the stage. As she approaches retirement from a distinguished career, Scotland’s first female Chief Constable is drawn to revisit one of her earlier cases: that of Alfred Chalmers, convicted for the murders of four young women 25 years previously. Chalmers has always protested his innocence, and the key evidence in the case has been conveniently lost… The scenes between Isobel and Chalmers are tautly written and full of menace. As a counterpoint, the black humour of Frank Bowman and the tapes of the original interviews, which
Isobel obsessively revisits, take us into familiar territory. Unfortunately, the relationship between Isobel and her daughter is less convincingly drawn, and this weakens the ending – perhaps here the gap between page and performance is most evident. Nevertheless, the script will stay with you, and there is certainly evidence that the dare has paid off. Here’s hoping it is not Rankin’s last foray into scriptwriting. Supertato – Sue Hendra Sue Hendra will be familiar to parents everywhere as the creator of Barry, Keith and Norman – a fish, a cat and a slug respectively, all with rather odd features. Her latest creation is Supertato – a crime fighting superhero who just happens to be a spud. Strange? Not if you have already read about the fish with fingers! As Hendra points out at the start, some vegetables are frozen for a good reason. The supermarket is thrown into chaos when a pea escapes from the freezer, intent on causing mayhem. Luckily Supertato is there to save the day, facing up bravely to the threat of the masher in order to ensure that the veggies can live safely again. Be warned, though – some editions of the book come with stickers. Once they have finished laughing, your children may find them. And you may be summoned downstairs to a decorated kitchen with the words, “Mummy, there seems to be an escapee (geddit?) on the loose…” To be honest, if they can get that absorbed in the book, it has to be a good thing!

oah the goat is working very hard with his new ladies and has made himself look super alluring by weeing all over himself – perfectly normal but needless to say we are stroking him less! We have kept the two smallest ladies we recently purchased away from him to let them grow on a bit more, and stagger when the kids are born next year. Goats are pregnant for five months and so we will have to make provision for inside accommodation in case the weather is wet in February as goats do not like rain or wet feet. Alan our new kid is getting big and spends most his time on the top of his house dancing about and then Alan at 4 weeks launching himself off, he could do with another kid to play with really but poor Alan has to make do with us. We attended the Chertsey Show with some pigs this year and won Supreme Champion of the show with our Middle White gilt Cheryl; bless her she walked all the way around the main ring in the

grand parade behind some enormous cattle, and looked very pleased with her win. This hopefully will be a British Pig Association affiliated show next year and I have been asked to help increase pig exhibitor numbers to enable this to happen. It will be an excellent show for newcomers so if anyone keeps pigs and wants to give it a go next year then contact me via the website. We have had a few litters of piglets born; we even had a litter of 15 from one Saddleback sow, numbers that would make a commercial farmer smile. British Saddlebacks really are good and prolific mothers but for cuteness the with Dad Noah Middle White piglets take the prize. I have secured some Ross White Cobb chickens for breeding meat chickens; I should get them very soon. Our Brahmas are stunning to look at but highly seasonal egg layers and not really meaty enough to eat so to have a utility breed as well makes good farming sense. What a load of rhubarb!
C
ast your mind back to the fabulous sunny months of April, May and June, when the rhubarb plants were producing delicious stems of juicy fruit, perfectly ripe for crumble. Each of the stems (therefore technically not a fruit at all) which blushed with the colour of pink champagne or deep raspberry sorbet depending on the variety, could easily be torn from the plant, topped and tailed and then either used immediately or blanched and frozen for later. Rhubarb freezes very well, and lasts for around a year; in fact I made a crumble in April using last year’s frozen harvest. Chopped into 1cm pieces, it can be placed directly into freezer bags, but to retain its colour should be blanched for around 1 minute in boiling water. Allow to cool and dry before freezing. To revive, boil in a little fresh orange juice, a teaspoon of cinnamon powder and sugar to taste before allowing to cool. It’s a versatile crop and makes great jam, compote and crumble, and tastes delicious when made as above and served with crème fraîche. Rhubarb originates from the colder parts of China and its popularity is fairly recent in historical terms, becoming more widely eaten as sugar became less expensive. The leaves are toxic and so too are the stems later on in the year, because the toxic acids move down the stems from the leaves and into the crown as the

winter temperatures cool. October is the perfect time to plant rhubarb if you haven’t got any at the moment and would like a patch of your own. It’s quite unfussy and will grow in sun or part shade as long as the soil is moisture retentive. Add well-rotted manure to the planting hole and mulch the plant with a ‘doughnut’ shape of manure about 50cm deep in spring. Give the plant a feed with ‘blood, fish and bone’ in March and watch it grow! It’s an easy perennial plant, which produces giant leaves and is pretty resistant to pests, although hungry mammals might feast on the crowns in early spring when food is scarce. Early rhubarb can be ‘forced’ inside up-turned dustbins, but only do this with established plants. Place a black bin (or terracotta rhubarb forcing jar if you’re a pro) over the plant in early spring, and then enjoy the small, tender and sweet stems as they develop and search for the light. Grown commercially in large dark sheds in the Yorkshire rhubarb triangle – between Wakefield, Leeds and Morley – this wonderful vegetable (only classed as a fruit for tax reasons) can also be divided up this month if you have a large overgrown patch. NOISE ANNOYS!
In response to Martin Spurrier’s Gatwick piece in August’s Village Tweet (page 46)… Aircraft noise in and around Slinfold village is still louder and more disturbing than it used to be. This is despite the fact that the new flight path trial ended on 8th August.
There are possible reasons for this. The flight paths departing Gatwick and passing near Slinfold were changed in November 2013 resulting in the paths being less dispersed and more concentrated through one line which is now closer to Slinfold. This change was partly masked by the six-month ADNID flight path trial that caused so much distress. Slinfold Parish Council, unlike Warnham and Rusper PCs and Horsham DC, were not consulted prior to the November 2013 change. If you object to the new level of noise, particularly what it was like in the recent holiday period, please e-mail clerk@slinfold-pc.gov.uk or telephone the clerk: (01403) 785864 or write to her at: Mrs Mary Burroughs, Slinfold Parish Council, PO Box 315, Billingshurst ,West Sussex RH14 9XX, before the next Parish Council meeting, 30th October and let her know your views. Community Gardening at Station Road Gardens The ultimate workout for mind, body and soul!
G
ardening is good for the soul and cheaper than therapy, so the saying goes. It’s also one of the best forms of all-round healthy exercise. And in a public space it does a power of good for the community. Station Road Gardens in Billingshurst is a prime example. Once a featureless abandoned cricket field, it’s now a thriving, joyful space full of wild flowers, with play equipment, picnic areas and even an orchard. This project, originally to be council run by Billingshurst Parish Council, faced lack of funding which meant delays. However, local people refused to give up and one, Keith Brown, took on the responsibility. Passionate about the community and ‘giving something back’, he registered it as a charity, Friends of Station Road Gardens, with five trustees and a handful of volunteers. Opening in 2008, the Gardens have evolved with Keith and just four others, occasionally receiving muchneeded help with planting from Billingshurst Primary School, local Scouts and WAKOOS children’s centre. So much has been achieved, the Gardens proving popular and well used by all groups in the community. But there’s still a long way to go, and with a project this
size (3.5 acres) work is never ending. Volunteers are desperately needed to help finish the Gardens – weeding, watering, mulching, planting and digging – before they are handed over to Billingshurst Parish Council for long-term upkeep. And for those who take up the challenge, the health benefits of gardening are many and well documented. Studies have shown it helps lift the spirits – just 30 minutes digging in the dirt can lower the stress hormone cortisol and boost your mood. Research abounds showing benefits for improved mental health and brain function, including easing depression and helping prevent dementia. Regular physical exercise like gardening helps prevent heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis. What are you waiting for? If you have a few hours a week to help Keith and the team – even if it’s to provide coffee for the workers! – please contact Keith at keith-brown@talktalk.net or on (01403) 782321 or Ray on (01403) 782745. Or just turn up at 10am any Sunday! Find us on Facebook at Friends of Station Road Gardens (www.facebook.com/FOGBillie) Elayne DeLaurian Photo: Ray Deefholts

Our little furry playmates John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.
I
have a great love for all the animals that inhabit our farms. From the gentle cows to the cantankerous bulls, the suicidal ewes and their adorable lambs, the knowing horses and the equally intelligent pigs, I hold them all with great affection. However, there is one exception that I do have. It’s small and furry, and despite the fact that it has never done me any harm, I loathe it. The Rat. Perhaps it’s the way it moves. Hugging the darkest recesses of the wall as it scuttles to its destination. Or, maybe, it’s that tail trailing behind it that seems to so increase the size of the beastie. They all appear to be the size of a cat as you catch that fleeting glimpse as they disappear behind some object in the gloom of the shed or barn. But, it has to be said, they are one of the brightest of creatures on the farm. If ever the intellect that lurks inside the skull of these rodents was in question, then what happened in one of our apple stores removed any doubts that I might have once had… In pre-EU days there was no need for the elaborate controlled atmosphere stores that we have nowadays. The apple market was all ours until post-Christmas as no other apples were allowed to enter. So we could pick the fruit at a much riper stage than is done now and sell them at a steady rate, clearing the simple barn storage by early New Year. Anyway… Our apples at the time were stored in an old low-roofed lean-to like structure. The roof of corrugated iron was supported on huge wooden posts that stood on a hard-core base which had at some time been topped by a threeinch layer of smooth concrete. One end of the shed opened out over a pond and the other end was a brick wall into which three large fans had been introduced. The pond end was faced with fine chicken wire over which a steady stream of water cascaded down. The fans at the other end then sucked the cool damp air that was produced through the stacked boxes. Very simple and very effective for storing over such a short period. Our furry friend turned up – or at least the first sign of him did – when we were nearing the centre of the store during the packing period. The closer we got to the central supporting post the
30
more the damage came into view. First it was just the odd apple with a very distinctive bite mark, then the damage was so severe that box after box had to be taken up to the orchards and dumped for the rabbits and deer. Then came the rubble. Mounds of the stuff. Two barrow loads in the end. At last the post was reached and there at its base was the doorway that our friend had chewed for himself, and Lord knows how many relatives, as an entrance into this treasure trove of food. He had chewed his way up from the base of rubble, through the middle of the post and thus avoiding the concrete floor, opened the entrance, and then dumped the hard-core that he had excavated while building his nest over the stores floor. War was declared. Traps were liberally scattered around. No result. The local ‘rat’ man was consulted and he suggested a ring of sticky stuff placed all around the post’s base to either stop the invasion or trap the blighter as he ventured forth in the night. For several days all remained quiet. Then the damage started again. He had simply drilled some two feet higher up inside the post, made a new exit, and simply jumped over the barrier that had been so lovingly prepared. It was a couple of weeks later when the store had been emptied further, and our invader had more distance to travel, that we finally had him trapped by two sheets of corrugated iron against the wall of the shed. He was a big boy alright. The farm’s huge Tomcat was woken from his dozing on the yard wall, his torn ears and scarred face testament to his warring nature, and he was introduced to our furry friend over the corrugated barrier. The cat took one look and scarpered. Blasted feline coward… still, can’t really say I blamed him. So we had to try to dispatch the intruder ourselves, which called for much lashing blindly about with shovels accompanied by cries of pain as we inflicted as much damage on our own persons as on the fleeing guest. Of course the walls we had so carefully erected fell down as we scrambled to avoid the scurrying rodent and he fled the scene chastened but unscathed. I had to admire him though. His determination to get into the store despite the concrete floor, and his ability to think through the hurdles that were placed in his way, called for some very clear thinking. I still don’t like rats though. Uggh! John Nash

Get prepared!
W
ith the arrival of autumn and the shortening of the days there is realisation that winter is just around the corner. Horse owners can make life much easier for themselves by as well prepared as possible before the onset of dark evenings and poor weather conditions. Finding forage. Make sure you have sorted out a good supply of good quality hay or haylage. If you have enough storage space it makes sense to buy in enough to last you over the winter months as buying in bulk will save time and money. If you struggle for storage find a good supplier who is happy to store it and deliver it as needed. Many feed companies offer a forage analysis service which can be useful to see the quality of the forage you are buying so you can adjust feed rations as necessary. Bedding. Like forage, bedding can also be bought in bulk at a cheaper price. If you are on a yard ask other owners if they would like to share a delivery saving money for everyone. Think about investing in rubber mats; these enable you to use less bedding thus saving time on mucking out and money by using less bedding. There is a vast choice of bedding materials on the market today and it can be a little trial and error in finding out what works best for you and your horse. Miscanthus is becoming very popular as is chopped rape straw; both are absorbent and dust extracted and biodegrade easily on the muck heap meaning less to be disposed of. Woodshavings are still a very popular choice making for a clean and comfortable bed and, like miscanthus and rape straw, will also deep litter well. Many horse owners now choose to use a semi-deep litter system, removing droppings twice or more daily and removing wet once or twice a week. Rugs. Have a good look at your horse’s rugs, check the stitching and buckles and send any that need a repair in before you need them. It may also be worth getting your rugs washed and reproofed professionally rather than have a domestic with your other half by breaking the washing machine at home – other than fleeces and coolers, horse rugs are way too heavy for most domestic machines, not to mention getting them dry
again! If you decide to treat your horse to a new wardrobe please think about donating your old rugs to a charity; what they can’t use they may be able to sell to help with their costs over the winter so even tatty rugs are gratefully received. Clippers. Get your clippers serviced if they have been sitting unused all summer. It’s a good idea to get them serviced by a professional as he will check them for electrical safety as well as replace any worn or damaged components. Also get your blades sharpened – there is nothing worse than getting your horse ready for his first clip of the season only to find your blades are blunt, or worse still they give out half way through the job! Around the yard. Have a good look around your stable yard, check the guttering and clear it of any debris to allow water to flow freely into drains. Clean and disinfect the drains themselves. Check lightbulbs are working and remove dust and cobwebs from around light fittings. Oil door hinges and bolts, check and realign as necessary. Consider using a wood preservative to protect stables and field shelters before bad weather sets in – make sure it’s an animal friendly brand and keep horses away until it is dry. Also consider putting hardcore or field mats down in areas that get muddy such as walkways and gate areas. Check that fencing is in good repair, horses do tend to lean on it and try to push through once grass becomes short supply. Fitness. Now is the time of year to plan your horse’s winter fitness plan. If you have no facilities and are only riding at weekends you may want to speak to your farrier about removing back shoes. Why not pre-book some lessons in an indoor school if there is one nearby? Sometimes there are discounts available if you book a block of lessons in advance and some riding clubs offer indoor clinics over the winter season. Hopefully we will have an Indian summer and the winter will be short, crisp and cold – unlike the last one! Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Living with Laika – ‘Speechless!’
L
aika looks at me (I’m in the study)… pleading… I know that! Large hazel eyes lift up from a head that lies between great furry paws. Ears point skywards… A sigh… Nothing doing… Close eyes… Sleep… Count squirrels or rabbits! Prefers to chase them and trots to the garden to fetch a squeaky tennis ball. This is displayed triumphantly in front of me – attention-seeking yellow is flashed and wielded from side to side. Shaken, crushed and emitting piercing squeals, it is finally tossed in my direction – game on! Ball is hoofed back in her direction – a scramble, a grab – ball tossed back to me. Serious stuff now… I kick ball the length of the hall where Laika guards the door to the kitchen like Manuel Neuer in the World Cup. An outstretched mouth grasps the ball which shrieks shrilly before being flung back. This requires a move to the garden now – stepovers, a Cruyff Turn perhaps – a dazzling display of fancy footwork? Laika leaps at a delicate chip; Laika hurls herself full length to protect the neighbour’s fence; Laika parries a shot in front of the bi-folding
doors to the lounge! What a dog! A veritable canine goal-stopper! Laika’s panting now; Laika has been nutmegged… Goal! I’m shattered! And all this because of those eyes… ‘those little eyes so helpless and appealing…’ I knew just what she wanted you see! It’s eminently easy to determine how a dog feels or what a dog wants – creatures of habit, they quickly learn behaviour types that will elicit a response – who needs words? The bark at night – cat or toilet rather than burglar; the bounding to the garden gate – walk; the doe-eyed gaze as we sit down in the dining room – more food please! Of course, you have tried to talk to your dog haven’t you? Be honest! In those quiet, still moments when it’s just the two of you (the dog and you, I mean), a simple question may not go amiss. “Would you like another treat?”; “Shall we go for a walk?” or merely “Bedtime?” The cocked head in response says it all… “What the blazes are you talking about?” Ron Myal

FREE Home Fire Safety Checks – call now!
B
efore I get onto the main topic this month, a big thank you to everyone that came along on 13th September and had their car cleaned to support The Firefighters Charity which looks after injured fire fighters and their families. We really do appreciate your generosity – without these fundraising events the charity would not survive. That was the last fundraising event of the year but next year we have two more car washes and hopefully another Open Day. Our two new recruits, Tim and Matt (introduced to Village Tweet readers in July), are settling in very well and undergoing further training to improve their knowledge and also carrying out Home Fire Safety Checks. Do you know this is a FREE service that we provide to anyone, just for the asking? We will visit your home, sit down and talk to you about fire safety issues in your home covering areas such as electrical safety, smoking safety (no, not
the damage it is doing to your lungs – our concern is with the fire risks involved!) and the use of electric blankets. We will then, with your permission, look at the various rooms within your home paying particular attention to areas such as overloaded plug sockets or wires trapped under carpets. We will also ensure that doors shut correctly and advise you of any remedial work that we feel may be in order for you to become safer within your home. You are welcome to ask any questions in respect of your home safety. We will also run through an escape plan if you do not already have one. If this is something that appeals to you, please contact our free telephone number 0800 328 6487 or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk for more information and to arrange an appointment. Saturday 18th October 11am to 4pm. FREE ADMISSION Local art and craft exhibitors will be demonstrating and selling their work Kelsey Hall is the life-blood of Ifold. Without a church, school or pub this is the place, apart from Oak Tree Stores, which keeps our community lively. Kelsey Hall started life as a brick-garage! Situated on the site called ‘Kelsey’ in Chalk Road, it was given, in 1948, to the Ifold Gardening Club (IGC). The brick garage was subsequently annexed by the addition of an ex-army hut, purchased via fundraising by the IGC who also helped out when, in 1971, the army hut had to be replaced by three prefabs. In 1978, supported by local councils and charitable trusts a permanent structure was built. In 1980 Kelsey Hall was registered as a charity. In 2002, more fundraising and a lottery grant enabled an extension to each wing to form the present day venue. In 2009 the land was vested in the name of Official Custodian of Charities. Fundraising for refurbishment and upkeep of Kelsey Hall is an on-going programme. For information on Kelsey Hall please visit https://ifolduk.wordpress.com or www.plaistowandifold.org.uk

There’s No Place Like Home
Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…
N
anny went on holiday to New Zealand in August. Obviously many things had to be arranged. Jackie and Sam said they would live at Nanny’s house and look after Chocolate Buttons the guinea pig, Magnus and Brody and the pigs and chickens. (And boy, was Nanny ever grateful for them! She didn’t worry a scrap). Gary offered to water the plants – no mean feat with dozens of pots and various greenhouses, flowerbeds and fruitcages. And Anne was in charge when she would be at home. Nanny was amazed when she got back. The garden looked like a lush jungle with miniature cucumbers the size of marrows (see photo), gherkins as big as water melons and tomatoes like Christmas tree baubles. Although the hail had shredded the pumpkin and Inca berries, they had recovered and were now rampant and green. Very amusing too are the stories which emerged, which included the following: Related by Izzie to Nanny during a dog-walk commenting on how Brody does the splits – upwards – when going to the toilet: “When we went on holiday to the Cotswolds he didn’t do it that way. He just stood there on all four legs when we went into the holiday house. Mummy had to clean it all up.” Related by Anne to Nanny at the debriefing: “Always ask an OCD person to do your watering.
It usually took Gary about three hours a day (Gary demurred at that). He even watered that plant in the middle of the compost area. “But that’s a weed!” replied Nanny. “Well it was so well watered it looks like a Triffid now!” answered Anne. Nevertheless Nanny was very grateful that none of her precious plants had died from lack of water. In fact the only plants looking remotely dodgy were the shrubs which had been lifted when the new deluxe sewage system was installed in her absence. Now it purrs quietly and swishes gently in the Relaxation garden which will have to be reassigned in its duties. Finally, Twiglet has done it again! Nanny had left the gate into the bigger paddock open so Twiglet could roam about. Dottie’s eyesight was not good enough to risk finding her way back but Twiglet loved to explore. However she did it, Nanny would never know, Twiglet knocked the gatepost over – maybe giving herself a good scratch. So Poor Sam had to tie it up and re-route the electric fence. Now Twiglet is confined to quarters which she doesn’t seem to mind. Nanny enjoyed her holiday seeing friends and family but the little farm near Billingshurst is home and she was glad to be back. And Magnus was VERY glad she was back too! Yvonne Fleece Photo: Grahame Pearson

ike many of you, we have all of our photos, including this year’s holiday snaps, stored digitally. Gone are the days of negatives and prints. But if you are a bit more traditionalist, like we are, you’ll periodically go through and print off your favourites. To make sure our prints look their best we use photo editing software to get rid of ‘red eye’ (caused by flash), brighten up the colours and smooth out some of those wrinkles! If you aren’t lucky enough to have professional editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, then what are your options for getting your photos looking their best? Here are some of the better image editing options that also happen to be free… 1. Pixlr. For a free image editor that lives within your browser (no software download needed), Pixlr is the best free dupe of Adobe Photoshop out there. Pixlr has many of the same functions as Photoshop, and the layout is on-point, complete with a customisable user interface with resizeable and moveable menus. Pixlr even has the same keyboard shortcuts as Photoshop.
2. Sumopaint. Available online, Sumopaint can also be downloaded as an app. You’ll find free and pro versions; the former has basic tools enough for simple image editing. 3. PicMonkey. This is a web app good for fun photo editing with Instagram-like filters. Similar to other online image editors, PicMonkey offers free and pro versions. Because a lot of basics, such as the curves and burn tools, are not completely available in the free version, PicMonkey is not the greatest editor for in-depth photo editing. 4. Splashup. Formerly Fauxto, Splashup is a simple online image editor good for beginners. You can import photos from third-party libraries like Flickr, Facebook, Picasa or even Photobucket, or upload from your desktop. 5. Picfull. This app prides itself in one-click photo editing. If you want to quickly throw an easy filter onto your photo, Picfull offers many simple options. The image window is small compared to other editors, but since Picfull’s only feature is filters, this should not be a huge problem. There are lots more online, free and paid for downloadable options available, but if you want to quickly get your snaps looking great then one of these apps will do the trick. Slinfold Concert Band needs more players!
S
linfold Concert Band is currently expanding but we need to maintain a balance across the Band and there are various sections which would welcome reinforcements. In particular we have vacancies for euphonium, tuba, bass trombone, trumpet/cornet and bassoon. We are also looking for percussionists who can read music. The Band was formed in Slinfold in 1979 with just five players but has grown to around 40 players who come from surrounding villages and further afield. We rehearse on Tuesday evenings in Slinfold Village Hall under the baton of Musical Director Christopher Newport. Rehearsals are always fun with plenty of banter and laughs alongside the music. We play a wide variety of music including light classical, Big Band, music from film and stage and plenty more besides!
As a guide, players of Grade 4/5 standard can cope with most of our music. We do not hold auditions so any brass and woodwind players are welcome to simply join us at our rehearsals. Most players improve rapidly within a band environment and we are happy to talk to players who are less experienced, or who may not have played for a while. Age is no barrier; in recent years we have had an eleven-year-old playing with us alongside an eighty-year-old! Interested? Then e-mail our chairman Polly Hobbs: chairman@slinfoldconcertband.org or tel: (01403) 270198. Or come and listen to the band, we’re playing at Billingshurst Community and Conference Centre on 16th November. Community Speedwatch
Jubilee Fields • It was disappointing to learn that young people were taking risks by swimming in the lake at Jubilee Fields this summer. The Police provided signage which the Parish Council installed, but no sooner were the signs being installed, persons unknown were removing them. The Police were made aware of the problem. • The Parish Council was asked to look in to the possibility of providing a publicly accessible toilet at Jubilee Fields. A specialist contractor investigated the possibility of shared use of the official’s room, but Football Association guidelines prevent shared usage. The Parish Council continues to work with the Billingshurst Sports and Recreation Association to examine the possibility of public toilets at this location together with further storage for the clubs. • The Sports Association have been proactive with their Charity Fun Day, friendly match with Crawley Football Club and Sussex County Cricket Day. The work of the dedicated team of volunteers has provided a boost to the Association’s funds.
Speedwatch is coming! Sites have been assessed and volunteers are working on risk assessments. Two volunteers have come forward to use the speed gun – could you help? If so, please contact PCSO Adrian Bell at the Community Police Office.
