elcome to the October issue of Village Tweet. Plenty to of events and activities this month – over three pages of What’s On

listings!   One particularly worthwhile activity that will appeal to both those with green fingers and a willingness to help the community is the Rotary Club’s Community Gardening Day on 12th October from 9am-1pm. Under the leadership of Keith Brown the Gardens have bloomed in more ways than one, bringing the community together and offering an attractive haven in the village. The Community Gardening Day is an invitation to put something back into the gardens, which belong to the whole village. Even if you know nothing at all about gardening, an hour or two spent weeding would be hugely appreciated. Oh, and there’s a free lunch for all who help! Thank you. Grahame

Tree and Wood: Take a Night Time Journey Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens, 24th October-2nd November*

T

ree and Wood, a dramatic new outdoor theatre and musical performance, is coming to the beautiful surroundings of Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens in West Sussex as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019.     Running from Thursday 24th October-Saturday 2nd November (*excluding 28th October), Tree and Wood offers the opportunity for families to experience something extremely exciting during Half Term and beyond as well as give people a chance to enjoy the stunning surroundings of Leonardslee Gardens after hours.     This will be an extremely special event, exploring the immediate tangible experience of trees – smell, touch, sounds – using the forest as its backdrop during dusk and nightfall. It will include physical performance, traditional and electroacoustic music and light installations. Listen out too for the remarkable vocal talents of Emily Williams – she has toured internationally as half of the acclaimed Welsh/American duo ‘Ember,’ releasing six albums.

The show is produced by Jony Easterby, creator of For the Birds and artistic contributor to the hugely popular Glow at Wakehurst Place, working with Nathaniel Mann, a sound artist, composer and folk singer. Jony has led a wide range of acclaimed artistic installation projects all over the world and is recognised as one of Britain’s leading ecologicallyaware artists.     To view a trailer of the show visit the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 website, www.hdculture2019.co.uk, and search for Tree and Wood.     Bookings can be made through The Capitol Theatre: www.thecapitolhorsham.com, tel: (01403) 750220.     Over 550 events are taking place in this Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 so don’t forget to see what else catches your eye in this special year of creative events to enjoy and take part in. Follow us @hdculture2019 on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter Sarah Hogben, Horsham District Council

Christs Hospital Choral Society: Autumn Concert Christ’s Hospital Choral Society are delighted to invite you to their autumn concert. Titled Music of Freedom and Destiny, the performance will feature three main pieces.     The combination of his seaside holiday location and a poem inspired Brahms to compose the beautiful Schicksalslied (‘Song of Destiny‘) but it took three years before he found the perfect ending. It is considered to be amongst his best choral works.     John Rutter’s Feel the Spirit is quite different in style, but this contemporary composer/conductor/ producer gives a dynamic swing to the seven brilliant spirituals in this piece.     Finally, Verdi. Many readers will know, if not love, Verdi’s rousing Va Pensiero, perhaps better known as The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.     Saturday 2nd November, 7.30pm at St Mary’s Church, The Causeway. Tickets from Choir members or CH Box Office, (01403) 247434, or at the door. Refreshments available, supporting Chestnut Tree House. Esther Clark

Two for the price of one plus fish and chips

T

hat is what you will get if you come to the Womens Hall, Billingshurst on Thursday October 31st, Friday November 1st or Saturday November 2nd. There will be two plays performed by Billingshurst Dramatic Society, with a fish and chip (or vegetarian and chips) supper during the interval provided by the local Billingshurst shop Jack Fullers.     Both plays are well into rehearsals and both have a theatrical link. Denise Robinson will be directing Curtain Call by Keith Trezise. Denise has been a member of the group for many years taking on many major roles but this is her first venture into directing. The play is set in an abandoned theatre where the actors meet to pay tribute to their friend and brilliant writer who died in a tragic road accident ten years earlier. As the play progresses their various relationships are revealed, as is the driving force behind the annual commemoration. The cast, though, are at a loss to know where one of the actresses has got to, and they search everywhere for her. When she does

8

finally arrive it brings about an unexpected revelation that may well change all of their lives.     The other play is being directed by Barry Syder who has directed many plays both in Billingshurst and in Horsham. The Coal Hole is written by by local writer Alex Plowman who lives in Billingshurst. It is set in London in the late 1940s where Diana Fox, a glamorous and beautiful widow in her fifties, lives in a townhouse overlooking Regent’s Park with Jane, her single, lonely and only child. Diana’s and Jane’s already brittle domestic relationship is tested by the arrival of a lodger, retired actor and widower, Stratton Doyle.     Tickets for this duo of plays can be purchased in person from Mansell McTaggarts in the High Street, Billingshurst (cash only please) or online from www.billingshurstdramaticsociety.com. The cost is £12.50 (standard online charges apply) which includes the fish and chips. Caro Anderson

Tomato Chutney If you’re wary of making chutneys and jams start with this easy recipe

METHOD 1. Place all the ingredients into a large pan and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Stir occasionally until the sugar has dissolved. 2. Simmer the mixture gently, uncovered, for about 45-50 mins or until everything is tender and thickened. 3. Cool, then transfer the mixture to a sterilised jar and seal.   The trick to jams and chutneys is that the jars and the chutney (or jam) should be hot. Ladle the hot preserve into a heatproof jug to make it easier to transfer the mixture into the hot jars. While everything is still hot, cover the jars with their lids or top with wax paper and a piece of cellophane secured tightly with an elastic band.   Your chutney should keep for about 6 months in a cool, dark place.

Slinfold CofE Primary and Pre-School Needs You! Autumn is the traditional time for new beginnings and Slinfold School is now looking for a volunteer to join our Governing Body who will help with our drive to continue improving the school for our children. We meet six times a year, once every half-term for the serious business of Governance but also enjoy being involved in a more casual way such as helping at sports day, attending drama performances and of course handing out awards! Being a Governor is a rewarding way of getting involved in the local community and provides an opportunity to really make a difference to the lives of young people in our lovely village. The role is a strategic one and we plan ahead three to five years ensuring clarity of vision and ethos, rather than getting involved on a daily basis. We also ask questions of the Headteacher concerning the performance of the children and have oversight of the financial performance of the school. This is an interesting role and if you think you have the time and energy to commit to it we would love to hear from you. If you have experience of managing buildings or financial expertise that would be welcomed but by no means essential. To find out more please contact Jane Sayers on (01403) 790253 or email: office@slinfold.w-sussex.sch.uk. Alternatively, email Chair of Governors, Sarah Elphick at seelphick@gmail.com We look forward to hearing from you!

The Screen Time Debate How much is too much?

F

or many parents battles over screen time and devices have become a frustrating part of family life. So how much screen time is too much for kids?     Well, it’s complicated. For some years parents have been advised to limit media consumption, but new research suggests it’s the quality not the quantity that matters.     Until quite recently parenting advice centred around the concept of screen time quotas with a Goldilocks-style sweet spot of two or so hours of screens a day, beyond which media use could become harmful. But now the advice is more conflicting. There seems to be a general consensus that under the age of six there should be no more than one hour of ‘high-quality programming’ per day, but for older kids the advice is simply to ‘place consistent limits on the time spent using media’ and to designate some screen-free time as a family. Unfortunately it’s not clear whether ‘consistent limits’ means four hours playing a video game on a Sunday every week, or whether three 20-minute sessions on an iPad is preferable to one hour-long session.     What is clear is that for young children one of the most important things is whether parents and kids play, watch or browse together. The nature of screen time matters. Passive TV is potentially more harmful than game-playing, socialising, or using creative apps. Psychologists are likening our media diets to what we put on our plates. It’s not just about digital junk-food, it’s about the relationship we have with technology and the role it plays in our family life. We need to avoid

12

using screens to distract teens or younger children from uncomfortable emotions, in the same way we wouldn’t encourage the use junk food to soothe them.     Interestingly a recent study of 20,000 parents published by the Oxford Internet Institute and Cardiff University determined that there was no correlation between limiting device use and children’s wellbeing. Another study by the University of Michigan on children aged four to eleven similarly found that it was how children use devices, not how much time they spend on them, which is the strongest predictor of emotional or social problems connected with screen addiction.     Although specific screen time limits are out of date, there is evidence that excessive use has negative impacts, affecting sleep, health and mood. Screen time, in and of itself, is not harmful – but reasonable restrictions vary greatly, depending on your child’s behaviour and personality. A useful strategy for parents is to ensure that what they’re watching, playing and reading is high-quality, age-appropriate and safe – and to join in wherever possible.     Balancing the online and offline world seems to be key, and that may vary greatly from family to family. Research shows that not having access to the digital world has a negative impact on kids too – so it’s all about finding the right amount for your family, with an holistic approach.     There’s a lot to be said for knowing your child and using your common sense! Local Hospice’s picturesque autumn hike returns

C

alling all walking enthusiasts and nature lovers! Join St Catherine’s Hospice on Sunday 13th October for a challenging hike through the picturesque Sussex countryside.     Starting from the South of England Showground at Ardingly, a brand new venue for this year, the hike will take you through Sussex fields and past historic landmarks including the Balcombe Viaduct, Ardingly Reservoir and Wakehurst Place Seedbank and will allow you to enjoy the changing colours of autumn whileraising funds for your local hospice.     The full hike is 13 miles, but there are also 9- and 6mile walking routes available, and a 3-mile nature trail, making this a family friendly event – even suitable for the dog! There will be plenty of parking on the day, and you’ll be greeted with hot food, entertainment and delicious cakes to celebrate at the end of your hike.     Sophie Peckham, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at St Catherine’s said, “We’re delighted to host Sussex Landmarks Hike for a second year. This autumnal hike follows a stunning

route through the Sussex countryside and is great fun for all involved. We hope lots of you will join us, along with your family and friends. Your support will help us be there to provide end-of-life care for more local people when they need us most.”     St Catherine’s is hoping to raise £35,000 from the Sussex Landmarks Hike by asking walkers for a donation or to raise sponsorship. This will allow the hospice to offer expert care to even more local terminally ill people in the future. At the moment, the local hospice can only care for one in three people who need them, but with your help and support, they’re determined to care for everyone.     Advance registration is £8 for adults (£10 on the day) and £5 for children. On-the-day registration is open from 9am at the South of England Showground at Ardingly. Ready to make your steps count? Gather your walking buddies and register online here: www.stch.org.uk/SLH or call St Catherine’s Events Team on (01293) 447364. Horsham community step up to the Climate Crisis

W

ith climate change in the news daily: heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair. Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions.     The Horsham Repair Café run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie Cort, co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café and founder of Sussex Green Living says, “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. At the Repair Café she helps people switch to clean energy providers. She adds, “Every household I have helped to switch (bar one) has saved between £90 and £366 in their first year. So surely it is a no brainer to change”.     Catherine Edminson, one of the volunteers

added, “What many people do not realise is wind turbines and solar farms, as well as power stations all feed their energy into the National Grid, like rivers running into a big pond. When you switch to clean energy, your supplier guarantees that however much electricity you take out of the ‘pond’, the same amount of clean energy will be put in.” She continues “The more people who switch to clean tariffs, the more renewable energy that goes into the pond. This means that the energy sector is producing less pollution and carbon which is crucial if we are to reduce global warming and climate change”.     In five minutes you can see a cost comparison with eight clean renewable energy by visiting https://bigcleanswitch.org/SussexGreen. Or make an appointment at www.horshamrepaircafe.org.uk, take along a recent energy bill and Carrie will help you through the process.     The Repair Café is on the first Saturday of every month and takes place in the Quaker Meeting House, Worthing Road, Horsham (near Sainsburys car park and the library). About the house

It’s solar-bout saving energy this winter with Austen’s Home Hardware, Billingshurst

L

ate October will herald the arrival of some dark days ahead. We say goodbye to the end of British summertime, when the clocks go back an hour on the 27th October.     Shorter daylight hours mean more reliance on artificial light, not just indoors, but outside too, where poorly lit steps, paths and driveways can prove both hazardous and inconvenient to negotiate as well as posing an additional home security risk.     Mains-powered outside lighting can be both expensive and complicated to install, and work of this nature should always be undertaken by a competent electrician who will also test and certify the installation is compliant with industry standards.     Often, a simpler and more affordable solution may well lie in solar powered lighting.     Solar power? In winter?     Already we detect a hint of scepticism among some of you reading this. But bear with us. The idea is really not as dim as it sounds!     Solar lighting technology has advanced significantly in the last few years, along with the LEDs (light emitting diodes) that provide the light source. Even on grey winter days solar panels can capture enough energy to top up the battery, although they will receive an added boost on days when the sun is shining. That’s free energy harvested from sunlight, so it

kinder on your pocket and the environment. What’s not to love?     At Austen’s Home Hardware Billingshurst we have a range that are designed to look good and be functional. Generally, these are more efficient solar collectors, brighter LEDs and greater battery capacity, as well as being far more durable and come in a variety of fixing options, enabling them to be located where their light source is most needed.     Many solar lights are fitted with a twilight sensor, meaning they will come on automatically at dusk and turn off again at daybreak. Others are equipped with motion sensors which will only illuminate when someone is in close proximity. That way they will conserve energy stored in the battery until it is needed.     Our switched-on people at Austen’s Home Hardware are full of bright ideas when it comes to helping you choose the right kind of solar lighting, so pay us a visit and get yourself prepared for the winter months ahead.     We also stock a range of both handheld and headband torches and batteries, so whether you’re venturing into the cupboard under the stairs or heading further afield after dark you’ll always have a guiding light close to hand. St Catherine’s Hospice Dragon Boat Festival returns with a splash!

S

t Catherine’s Hospice annual Dragon Boat Festival returned to Tilgate Park in style on Sunday 8th September for a fantastic day of free family fun!     Thousands of people turned out at Tilgate to watch 34 teams, made up of local businesses, battle it out to be crowned Dragon Boat Champions 2019.     This included Horsham businesses; Coole Bevis, ERG (Air Pollution Control) Ltd, Fisher Clinical, Forza Doors and Thakeham (based in Billingshurst).     Speaking on the day, Trevor Pratt, Group HR Manager at ERG (Air Pollution Control) Ltd said, “ERG (Air Pollution Control) Ltd is delighted to support St Catherine’s again through our participation in their Dragon Boat Festival. The staff at St Catherine’s do such dedicated work, and this year’s race has even more poignancy for us as one of our colleagues unfortunately passed away at St Catherine’s in February.”     Those on the shorelines tried their luck at traditional fête games like hook-a-duck and tin can alley, while younger visitors sprung into action on giant inflatables. And people made sure they looked their best with face paint and glitter, before posing in a photo booth. Visitors also tucked into tasty food from onsite vendors and enjoyed refreshing drinks from the onsite bar. The bar was provided by Sussex Event Bars, who donated a percentage of profits to St Catherine’s.     On the lake, teams showed true team spirit as they raced across the water in Chinese Dragon Boats. After a full day of races, in a tightly fought final, FFGS Golf Society powered through and were crowned champions, with a winning time of 52 seconds, which was five seconds faster than last year’s winners.     Close behind, in second place, were Beemer, with Thakeham taking the third place trophy. Winning teams were presented with medals and trophies by Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive at St Catherine’s, and The

Worshipful Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Raj Sharma.     After being crowned champions, FFGS Team Captain, Liam Ahearne said, “We loved taking part in our first Dragon Boat race. We didn’t think we’d be that competitive but once we saw the times of our first few races, we were spurred on to make the final! We’ve been friends for years; we started playing football together and now we’re all part of the FFGS Golf Society. We feel so proud to support such a great cause, particularly as every person on our team has had experience of the vital care St Catherine’s offers. We joined St Catherine’s for Live at the Lake this weekend too, so being crowned Dragon Boat champions was the perfect way to round off the weekend. It was an amazing family experience.”     St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival is one of the hospice’s biggest fundraisers. And by supporting this event, local people have made sure that terminally ill people in their community can receive care and support when it matters most.     This community support has never been more vital because currently, St Catherine’s can only care for one in three people who need their support. With the help of local people attending events, the hospice wants to make sure that, in the future, nobody faces death and loss alone.     Suzanne Davis, Corporate Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said, “We’d like to thank everyone who supported or took part in our Dragon Boat Festival. Your efforts take us a step nearer to reaching everyone who needs us. We hope you all enjoyed the day as much as we did!”     To find out about future St Catherine’s events, or how you can support the hospice or make a donation, please visit www.stch.org.uk. Books / About the house

A Good Read October’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The Shining – Stephen King Even if you have seen and loved Stanley Kubrick’s film adaptation, maybe even especially if you’ve seen and loved it, you should read the book. The book is not the film. The book is a deeper (and scarier) experience altogether.     Stephen King is a master storyteller, and in The Shining he created a classic novel of possession and isolation.     The Torrances are a damaged family. Jack is an ex-teacher and sometime writer with a drink problem, who takes the only job he can find – the winter caretaker at a hotel called The Overlook. He takes along his wife, and young son Danny. They are welcomed by the chef, Dick Hallorann, who has psychic abilities which he calls ‘the shine’, and Dick quickly realises that Danny shines too. He has to leave but forms a powerful connection with Danny promising that wherever he is if Danny calls to him, he will hear and come – a promise he later honours.     Ostensibly Danny is the main character and the book is about his father’s descent into madness, but it is the hotel which dominates the story. King paints an incredibly detailed picture with undertones of American Indian burial grounds, multiple homicides, hauntings and sightings. Jack appears to become possessed by forces at work there. The tension and claustrophobia build a threatening atmosphere. Prepare to be transported into the long, dark corridors at The Overlook Hotel and know that something dreadful awaits you there. There’s a plot twist or another dimension on every page, as you explore King’s carefully crafted nightmare landscape, populated with the spectres of dead children and their maniac father.     As the plot develops, we question whether Jack is really possessed or simply an alcoholic losing his mind, and whether Danny is psychic or whether what

I alsoobs, h r clean cto extras and r d o o h . Call fo s BBQ quote! a

he sees is because he’s been so damaged by his dysfunctional family. King’s skill is to weave together the demons, both real and imagined without drawing any distinct boundaries between the two. As the story builds to its terrifying conclusion you will be on the edge of your seat.     The Shining is a book that doesn’t only deserve a place on the bookshelves of horror fans, but of anyone who enjoys a well-crafted, fast-paced story with plenty of depth. Read it and you won’t be disappointed. By the Light of the Halloween Moon – Caroline Stutson and Kevin Hawkes I rarely recommend a book you may have to find secondhand, but there are plenty available from various sources and it is well worth the effort in time for Halloween. Caroline Stutson’s infectious graphic story, full of rhythmic repetition and alliteration, simply bounces along. It all begins on the night of a full Halloween moon, when we see a wiggling toe being stalked by a black cat. The cat never reaches the toe, because it is stopped by a witch, and so the scene is set for a succession of scary creatures, including a bungling, bouncy, breezy bat and a grumpy grungy hobgoblin sprite, who are all thwarted in their various attempts to reach the toe.     The repetition of key lines makes it a terrific book for reading aloud and encourages younger children to join in, while Kevin Hawkes’ scarycomic illustrations make By the Light of the Halloween Moon an appealing book for children and adults alike.     The ending, where we finally meet the owner of the wiggling toe, is delightful and sure to leave everyone smiling.

Pets / About the house

Do you know this cat? This lovely black cat has been visiting us on and off for several weeks. Lately though, it (not sure wether it’s a boy or girl) has been staying most of the day and at times, been staying in our garden overnight. We haven’t given it any food, only some attention (who could resist?).     It has a playful nature, seems in very good health with a good coat.     Our concern is that it has wandered off from somewhere and its owners are looking for it.     Before we contact any charities or the RSPCA, we thought this article may help to reunite it with its owners.     We live in Strood Green, near Wisborough Green. If anyone knows of its rightful owners or from where it is from, please contact Richard or Carol, tel: (01403) 700420 or 07974 673633.

Bid a heart-warming farewell to HeART to Heart

A

s the HeART to Heart trail enters its final weeks, St Catherine’s Hospice is looking forward to bringing all the hearts together at their Farewell Exhibition in October for a heart-warming final celebration.     The local hospice’s community art trail has captured the hearts of everyone involved, from the artists and sponsors, to children, adults and even four-legged friends in the local community. Since launching the trail at the start of July, St Catherine’s has seen thousands of people head out to visit the hearts and collect exclusive rewards from the HeART to Heart app.     Now, the local community will have the opportunity to see all the hearts for one last time. The Farewell Exhibition, taking place on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th October, is the only chance to see all of the stunning hearts together in one location, at the Copthorne Hotel Effingham Gatwick. Come along to get your final pictures, collect any hearts you may have missed on the trail, and pick up exclusive HeART to Heart merchandise in support of your local hospice.     The exhibition will also give the public the opportunity to meet some of the talented HeART to Heart artists and hear more about the inspiration behind their designs, as well as why taking part in the trail has meant so much to them. The artists have taken part in the trail for a variety of reasons and each heart has its own unique story.     Caroline Collins is one of the artists of Fluttering Free, along with four others who make up the Cowfold Ladies. She is also a Staff Nurse on the Inpatient Unit at St Catherine’s Hospice so

has seen first hand the difference their care can make. Caroline said, “It was special to us that our heart was named Fluttering Free as we feel butterflies really symbolise what we try to do at St Catherine’s; you want to look after people but you also want them to be free to be able to do what they want to do. It’s been really great to be involved with the whole organisation of making the hearts and lots of the conversations that we’ve had have been very therapeutic with some of our own losses that we’ve experienced too. It’s been a really wonderful project and I’m so glad that other people are enjoying it as well.”     Tickets to the Farewell Exhibition are limited and expected to sell fast, so make sure you book early at www.stch.org.uk/exhibition. The exhibition will be open from 11am to 8pm on the Friday and 10am to 6pm on the Saturday.     After this, there will be the chance for people to take one of the beautiful hearts home forever at an exclusive live auction on Wednesday 30th October. To register your interest in attending the auction, please email heart@stch.org.uk.     The money raised through the Farewell Exhibition and Auction will provide care to local terminally ill people when it’s needed most. Currently, St Catherine’s can only care for one in three local people, but with the support of people like you, in the future the local charity wants to make sure no one has to face death and loss alone.     For further information about the trail, please visit: www.stch.org.uk/hearts. Out and about / About the house

A Collector’s Passion Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, open now until 26th October

A

n amazing opportunity, a real treat for art lovers, the new temporary exhibition A Collector’s Passion allows visitors to Horsham Museum and Art Gallery to see outstanding art by some of the masters of 20th century Scottish art.     Instead of traveling the high road or even the low road you will have the chance to see work by the four greats of the Scottish Colourists; Cadell’s Marble Quarry Iona, Fergusson’s Rue St Jacques, Hunter’s Still life with flowers and fruit and Peploe’s Kircudbright Castle. Works by Ann Redpath, Sir Robin Philipson and John Houston complement these works, high points of any Scottish art collection. With over 20 works on display, this is an opportunity to see a private collection of paintings not seen in public since they were sold.     A Collector’s Passion showcases the works collected by a private individual who on being awarded an art prize in his secondary school, went out and bought a watercolour by the then local artist Archie Sutter Watt. That painting bought more than 60 years ago features in the exhibition, along with two others by the Galloway-based artist who taught and inspired others. Later on, as the collector’s career developed, he along with his wife, sought and searched in the pre-internet era, for other paintings. When the world is open to you, you can focus, or be eclectic. They jointly decided to focus on works by Scottish artists from the 20th century and beyond, collecting what appealed, rather than ‘trophy collecting’, achieving as much satisfaction and delight from a Chris Bushe painting, of which three are on display, and

26

one by Sir William MacTaggart.     A collector researches and knows his collection, finds connections between works; a hoarder just acquires for the sake of acquiring. Without doubt, the exhibition at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is a real collector’s passion. Each work of art on display shows the collector’s eye, shows his and his wife’s understanding of art, both technique, pallet and subject as well as context.     Although unusual to see Scottish art in Horsham, a Sussex market town, the town and district has had many connections with the nation, from Jacobite sympathiser who preached in a local church, to head teachers, to being the summer palace of a Clan leader and even the birthplace of Joan Eardley, a major Scottish artist born in Warnham. As with all art, it crosses national boundaries as artists are influenced by others from different regions and places, it is universal, not parochial.     As part of Horsham District’s Year of Culture, A Collectors Passion celebrates the impact that collector’s have had on broadening the cultural offer on the district. Without their passion the artistic life would be diminished. This once in a lifetime exhibition displays that contribution. It is a must see for art lovers.     Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, free admission. For more information see www.horshammuseum.org. UK’s best tribute acts get crowds go-going at Live at the Lake!

T

ilgate Park was filled with the sound of music as St Catherine’s Hospice festivalinspired event, Live at the Lake, returned for a second year of fun in September.     Taking place across two days for the first time, over 4,000 visitors enjoyed a range of family friendly entertainment including a games tent, glitter station, inflatables and merchandise stalls. On Friday evening (6th September), the original Brother from Another took to the stage to warm up the crowd with unique covers of all their favourite songs. Headliners, Best of WHAM! then took to the stage to get the crowd go-going to some of WHAM!’s biggest hits including Wake Me Up Before You GoGo and Club Tropicana.     Turning up the volume on the Saturday (7th September) were three of the UK’s biggest tribute bands, supported by the brilliant The Bendecho Brothers and Angel Delights. Following an energetic performance from the Rocket Man himself Elite Elton, the Stayin’ Alive crew brought the Saturday Night Fever before ABBA Forever gave a

Super Trouper performance as the festival headliners, with their set list including all the classics such as Dancing Queen, Money, Money, Money, Waterloo, Mamma Mia and Chiquita!     Elite Elton said, “The atmosphere at Live at the Lake was incredible and I had such a great time! It was brilliant to see so many local people enjoying the festival, and knowing that we were helping to raise vital funds for a local charity made the day even more special. Thank you to everyone who came to support us and St Catherine’s”.     St Catherine’s is delighted with the support for their first two-day Live at the Lake event. Hannah Liles, Events Project Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said, “We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us over the weekend. We had a brilliant time and hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!”     To find out about future St Catherine’s events, or how you can support the hospice, visit: www.stch.org.uk. Charity / About the house Six Bells Charity Fun Day raises £1282 for Macmillan The Six Bells in Billingshurst hosted their Annual Charity Fun Day on Saturday 27th July.     Despite the wet start the rain held off and the fun started at 12 noon. There was live music throughout the day, hog roast, hot dogs, raffle and an auction. The local Billingshurst Macmillan Group were there selling their homemade cakes and preserves and also ran a tombola and lucky dip. There was even a visit from our local MP Jeremy Quin, who was very impressed with the event and the support of the local community.     A staggering £1282.62 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support and will all go to local Cancer Care!     Macmillan would like to thank Lewis and his staff and all those that attended.                          Rowena Harris

Getting set for winter

A

s I write this we are having a lovely start to September with some glorious sunny days after a hot and humid summer. As the evenings start to draw in and that autumn chill hangs in the air once the sun goes down I thought that now is the time to get ready for winter and all those little jobs that need doing to try and make life as easy as possible and hopefully the long dark nights and grey days will fly by quickly.     First of all make sure you have a good forage supply. If you have plenty of storage space you may have been lucky enough to buy hay off the field already. If not, speak to suppliers, many are happy to pre-sell you a set amount and deliver in smaller batches as you need it rather than one huge delivery. The same can be done with bedding – you could club together with other owners and have a shared delivery and split the cost. Some suppliers will offer a bulk discount so everyone can save a bit of money.     Check buildings for blocked gutters and any other repairs that may need doing. Getting them done when the weather is still good will be a head start and make things so much easier in the dead of winter when you really don’t want to be doing emergency repairs in inclement weather. Give stables a through wash and disinfect walls and floors, remove any cobwebs and if you have them, lift any rubber mats and wash the floor underneath. Once clean and dry new beds can be established. Make arrangements to have muck heaps removed or tidied as necessary so they don’t overflow come winter when they can be harder to deal with due to mud or frozen ground. Check any light bulbs in the stables are working and replace if needed; if you don’t have mains electric have a look at solar- and battery-powered lighting systems, they are very efficient these days and make things so much easier – as does a decent quality head torch!

Check any hedge boundaries. Hedges will be getting thinner as leaves drop and gaps may well appear leading to an escaped horse or more likely pony! Fence any gaps as necessary, and check any other fencing. If you rely on electric fencing it pays to have a spare charged battery on standby as the cold can drain them more quickly and horses quickly work out when the electric isn’t working! Pay attention to gate areas; these get poached very quickly as horses tend to hang about around the gate at tea time. Putting hardcore in gateways can make your life easier as you won’t end up losing your wellies in deep mud trying to extract your horse from the field!     Get out your winter rugs and check if they need any repairs doing before the rug cleaning and repair companies get too busy. Getting them cleaned and reproofed can save lots of money against buying new ones too.     Invest in some water containers; I like to keep several full in the tack room where they can’t freeze just in case of frozen taps in the yard. Pop along to a builder centre or a DIY store and invest in a few bags of gritting salt for any concrete areas on the yard; there’s nothing worse than being greeted with an ice rink first thing in the morning! Make sure you insulate taps and water pipes too; this can save an expensive bill for a burst pipe in the long run.     Give your feed room a good clean out and invest in metal rodent-proof bins for storing feed. I have an old chest freezer; these are really useful and usually free!     Let’s hope the winter ahead won’t be too harsh. I would like bright sunny days and crispy cold weather – not too much to ask is it?! With a bit of preparation the winter will be gone in a flash – well let’s hope so anyway! Beautiful blueberries

I

love blueberries. They are not only incredibly good for you but also quite simple to grow. They thrive in a sunny border or in a pot on a balcony or patio, so there’s no excuse for not harvesting a crop of your own.     In addition, they are a generous plant. All varieties produce pretty white flowers in the spring, followed by delicate green fruits which ripen to deep blue. If that wasn’t enough, the foliage then turns pink and peach for autumn.     Blueberry bushes do require an acid soil to thrive but if you don’t have that (I don’t!) then use pots of welldrained ericaceous compost. When you need to re-pot, choose a pot just a few inches larger because they fruit better in a snug pot. Ensure it has adequate drainage holes and put some stones or rocks in the bottom and keep it raised so it doesn’t become waterlogged. Water with rainwater from your water butt, especially if you live in a hard water area. Make sure they are watered well while they become established and also while the fruit is ripening. Feeding with tomato food helps too. Poor or erratic watering causes the blueberries to shrivel or split, and noone likes a shrivelled blueberry!     If you have acid soil you can plant blueberry

bushes at any time of year when the ground is soft. Dig a hole twice the size of the rootball and spread the roots as you refill the hole to the base of the stem. Press the soil down with the heel of your boot.    Blueberries are sun-lovers and will fruit most abundantly in full sun. They are better grown in pairs to allow for cross-pollination. If you can bear it, remove the flower buds in the first year after planting because it encourages strong stem growth better fruiting for the following year. They don’t require any pruning for a few years. After that, thin overcrowded or unproductive branches in winter after the leaves have fallen. Remember blueberries fruit on branches produced the previous year, so each year remove one or two of the oldest canes to make space for the more productive younger stems.     In the winter move pots to a sheltered area or the shed for protection.     Beware! Our feathered friends love blueberries as much as we do so make sure you protect you harvest with netting!     Happy gardening! Rachel Leverton

Beware of wet grass! John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by. Throughout my life I’ve had the very good fortune to have to call on our overstretched health service on only a few occasions, a broken ankle and an assortment of cuts and bruises being all that have required the services of this superb national treasure. Sadly the other day I had recourse to call on their aid once more…     I would like to be able to say that the need for their help was the result of me suffering from severe breakages of my limbs from hang gliding in the alps, or frostbitten fingers and nose from a bid to reach the North Pole. But, no. I slipped on the reservoir’s grass banking and fell over!     As I suspect most of us do when such an event occurs, I looked around to see if anyone had seen the ballet positions I attained as I plummeted earthwards. Once certain I was alone I turned my attention to my demise. First thing I was certain of was that my backside was soaked. Wet grass and a six-foot slide down a slope while decked in shorts is a sure way of absorbing the moisture along the way and passing it through to delicate nether regions. Secondly though was the awareness of pain. As I fell there came a distinct click and a sharp pain around my ankle and calf area. I lay there for a second or two expressing a few well known country sayings to the empty air as I was sure I had repeated an event I had suffered many years ago. That, again, was a slip on a wet surface that resulted in four weeks in a plaster cast and the job of pruning apple trees while wearing a Tesco plastic bag as a water repellant plaster protector.     I think it is at this point that us members of the older generation are suddenly, and rather rudely, reminded of how many of our old physical skills are now hanging on a hook somewhere labelled ‘redundant abilities’.     They say it’s a sign of maturity when you lose the ability to get up from the floor without using your hands. Ye Gods, that’s the understatement of the year! Try it while your leg refuses to give any assistance either and the last few feet of a

36

wet slope beckons you onwards. I’m proud to say, however, I made it! (I did use my hands, though, along with a further amount of colourful language!)     Damn… it hurt. The hobble to the farmhouse was slow, but later the drive to St Richards was not too bad at all as a comfortable numbness had descended over the limb. I should express here my thanks to Sally, whose nursing skills were once more put to the test, and Doreen for taking over all my daily tasks without complaint despite her own recently renewed knee!     Arriving at the hospital, A&E was pretty full and a rather long wait was anticipated. However, within an hour and a half I had been assessed and passed through to a doctor. After a poke and a prod she herself wheeled me down for an X-ray of my ankle and the radiologist herself returned me to the ward. I felt quite honoured though I suspect it was actually because the porters themselves where up to their eyes in patients already.     Diagnosis: no break, but torn ligaments and tendons in my calf and a damaged nerve to my toes.     Treatment: rest, leg up, take it easy. For a day, that’s fine. For any longer, it’s sheer boredom! Never mind, though. My own fault and something I will never do again, well not too soon anyway.     Nothing but praise for our national treasure though. Always there when we need it and peopled by folks who are to my mind just GREAT! ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Oh dear me! It’s now two weeks since I wrote this piece and my wonderful physio advised me to return to A&E as she was not happy with the way things were going. The doctor called up the orthopaedic department. They called for more X-rays.     Guess what… my leg is broken! Three inches below my knee my fibula was broken. No plastering needed as it should heal on its own. Us country yokels are tough in body you know as well as thick in the head!     So, you good folk, be careful, be sensible, and watch out for wet grass. Damn dangerous stuff, wet grass you know! John Nash

Community Gardening Day Station Road Gardens, Saturday 12th October, 9am-1pm

“G

ardens are not made by singing ‘Oh, how beautiful!’ and sitting in the shade.” So wrote Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), the eminent poet and writer of If and The Jungle Book… and he was so right.     Gardens don’t just happen by accident and Billingshurst has been lucky for the last ten years to have Keith Brown and a small team of dedicated volunteers who have, along with the Parish Council contractors and staff members, created and maintained our wonderful Station Road Gardens.     To celebrate this, the Friends of Rotary in association with Billingshurst Rotary Club, are inviting everyone including those who enjoy our ‘Garden of Eden’ in the heart of our community and those who may just walk past to catch the train, to a Community Gardening Day on Saturday 12th October.     Everyone is invited to meet at the gardens in Station Road with Keith Brown and his team and help them to prepare the Gardens for the winter. You don’t have to be an expert gardener, just willing to do some weeding, clipping, deadheading and general tidying for a few hours.

And a free lunch! Your reward will be lunch on us! Plus, you will meet with old and new friends, have some gentle exercise and lots of fresh air.     Best of all, you will not have been singing ‘Oh, how beautiful!’ and sitting in the shade but helping to keep one of our most precious community assets alive and well.     Earlier this year, as reported in June’s Village Tweet, Keith Brown was recognised by the Queen and awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for his role in helping establish and maintaining the Station Road Gardens.   • ‘Community Gardening Day’, Station Road Gardens, Saturday 12th October, 9am-1pm.   • Free lunch for all who help. All welcome, and bring the family!   • To sign up or to assist with catering needs, please e-mail Sandy Duck:– sandyduck@ btinternet.com or tel: (01403) 786146. One Autumn Night

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst… he night was dark and still, the moon not yet risen. The stars’ light could not pierce the gloom and shadows of the hedgerow where dark shapes lurked and gathered from the shelter of neighbouring bushes and the expanse of nearby paddocks. The air was thick and cool becoming yet cooler, damper and somehow more sinister as the shapes and shadows mingled. The air became thick with the pungent smell of decay. The darkness deepened and became more dense. The shapes murmered without words the sound just beyond range. An observer might hear a sound but be unable to identify it. But the shapes communicated and their purpose grew as they merged, determinedly focused on a quiet group slumbering under the pine trees near the gate…     Aaron and the girls were indeed slumbering, gathered quite close together, their breath barely visible in the cool dark night. Their day had been busy grazing and now they were tired, resting in their favourite spot fast asleep feeling safe and contented.     It was the alien smell which wafted across the paddock which made Siobhan stir. As the elder she felt responsible for any danger. A quick check but the smell was gone again so she settled down once more. But as her eyes closed she smelled it again, stronger and closer. She opened her eyes fully this time and lifted her nose in the air. Yes, something was coming closer. The smell was very unpleasant. She sensed danger and stood up and snickered quietly. Slowly the others awoke, each in turn becoming aware of the smell too, and as each clambered to their feet their eyes became accustomed to the dark and noticed the dark shapes coming towards them, not moving swiftly but drifting like ground fog covering the space between them as they advanced slowly towards them.     The small flock moved as one along the fence to the far corner of the paddock. That was a mistake as the shapes followed spreading out to form a semi-circle around the sheep. They looked for a way out but their

T

escape had been cut off. The fence behind the was too high even for Aaron. The flock stood together trembling and trapped as the dark shadowy shapes surrounded them. Nothing was going to save them as they saw the sharp shining teeth of the shadows which got closer and closer.     Right at the back of the flock Anna-Georgia remembered… In her mind’s eyes she recalled her dream from last winter when she went somewhere and there was a smiling mother and a little child who thanked her for putting her wildness aside to visit him. She remembered how happy she was to be with him. And it seemed he was speaking to her there in that horrible dark place.     As the shapes clustered around for the kill AnnaGeorgia pushed herself forward on trembling legs. After all her wildness was just a cover for her fear. She stood in front of the others and stared at the shapes. There was a little rustling of anticipation from the shapes as they prepared to take this one… until she started to glow.     Her silver wool began to glow and she seemed to get bigger and bigger. The dark shapes stepped back at the light for they could not bear the light to expose their evil deeds and desires. Anna-Georgia stepped forward, her light shining like the sun’s halo. The black shapes retreated. She chased them then from one side of the paddock to the other and they slid back into the shadows of the hedgerows trying to escape the light of this silver-glowing sheep.     Finally the shapes had disappeared and after she had checked each fenceline Anna-Georgia came back to her companions who had remained where they were in stupefied wonder. They nuzzled her as the glow diminished and she regained her normal size. After their greeting she moved to the back of the flock into her accustomed position.     They all moved cautiously to their night position under the pines and settled down again. They slept soundly until the sun rose on the small farm near Billingshurst. Yvonne Fleece

Our Community Volunteers – Laughter Group

T

hree women who met at T’ai Chi classes at the Community Centre – one widowed and two suffering from fibromyalgia – made the decision to attend a course last autumn on Laughter Yoga, a choice which has been life-changing for them. In February Linda Stevenson, Carol Dilley and Val May launched the Billingshurst Laughter Group, which encourages people to use breathing exercises, childlike movement and – crucially – laughter to promote wellbeing, while raising their spirits in spite of any mental, emotional or physical conditions which normally hamper them. I met Linda and Carol (pictured) to ask about the monthly Tuesday afternoon sessions at the Unitarian Church Hall, Billingshurst.     Keen to avoid the idea of an activity restricted to the fit or the young they omit the word ‘yoga’ in the group’s name: their methods are accessible to all and aim to help people to get beyond their problems, lowering their blood pressure and heart rate, decreasing pain and elevating mood. People can be a little apprehensive at first but soon relax, finding that they are not made to do anything that they feel uncomfortable with, and what starts with ‘false’ laughter soon leads to the real thing. Certainly Carol and Linda are the most joyful interviewees I have ever talked to, and I believe them when they tell me that

the benefit of having a trio is that they ‘bounce off’ each other and the responsibility of leading doesn’t just fall on one person.     After the course, the three women met regularly to use the exercises together and to plan sessions where they could share what they learned with others. They charge a small fee per session to cover their costs, but it isn’t a commercial enterprise. They tell me cheerfully that if there aren’t enough attendees to cover the costs they will simply meet as a trio privately and continue to benefit from the exercises themselves, which Carol describes as being like “an injection of joy.” A former nurse, Carol points out that the chemical effects of the session can last for up to 48 hours after the session, not to mention the simple benefit of getting to know others in the group and laughing. I can only say that they are a very good advert for their club…     For more information email lstevenson201854@ gmail.com. The next sessions will be held on 1st October, 26th November and 10th December.
