P

erhaps the biggest event this month is the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km Races on 24th September. With the launch of the 10km races last year the event has really grown, attracting many people for whom the full half-marathon (if that isn’t an oxymoron) is just a tad too far. There is still time to enter – see page 6. The first Lark in the Park in July was superb, a rare warm day ensuring Station Road Gardens was packed with the local community out to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and watch local singers while enjoying a picnic. See page 10. Grahame Cover: Martin Footman of Worthing & District Harriers achieved 4th place in last year’s Half Marathon with a time of 1:14:45. Record number of entries for Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races

record number of runners have registered for this year’s Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races. By the end of July over 1100 runners had registered for the two races: 880 for the Half Marathon and 233 for the 10km race, two thirds of whom are female, a 50% increase on the figures at the same time last year. Commenting on the entry levels, Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings said, “We are delighted to have so many runners registered for our two races. We are particularly excited about the interest in the 10km race which is being run for just the second time. The new race has attracted a lot of interest from runners who don’t want to run a half marathon but want to experience the competition and excitement of taking part in a professionally organised event with prizes and medals for every competitor. It is important that we can attract as many runners as possible to help us keep the event developing and flourishing”. The 2017 event will take place on Sunday 24th September and will be the 35th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the second year of the new 10 kilometre race. The whole event is run entirely by volunteers and raises a lot of money for charity and also makes significant donations to various groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village who help with the staging of the

race. This year’s official charity for the event is once again St Catherine’s Hospice and already £1500 has been pledged by runners. There will be a unique double this year as Horsham MP, Jeremy Quin will start both the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races. Of course there is a twist. Jeremy will be on a podium with a claxon to act as the official starter for the Barns Green Half Marathon which starts at 10am. Then he will get into his running gear and will take part in the 10km event which starts a few minutes later at 10.20am. Also it will be a special race for Horsham Joggers legend John Booker. This year’s Barns Green Half Marathon will be his 35th and to mark the occasion he will be wearing vest number 35. The Half Marathon and 10k races follow routes on closed roads through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. Once again this year, there will be a number of bands and groups playing at different points on the race routes to help keep all the runners motivated. Baked Apples

Food and drink Prep time: 20-30 minutes Cooking time: 2.5 hours Makes 6 baked apples

With nuts and butterscotch sauce. Cook in a slow-cooker and return from an autumn walk to a tasty treat!

METHOD

1. Core the unpeeled apples but only go ¾ of the way through. Make the hole about 4 cm / 1.5 inches across. Then score the skin around the centre of the apple (to allow for expansion in the cooker). 2. Mix 30g of the butter with the nuts and, cinnamon and 60g of the sugar. Press the mixture into the apple cavities. 3. Into the slow cooker pour the cream, apple juice and remaining butter and sugar. Stand the apples in the sauce, cover and cook on the ‘high’ setting for about 2 hours 30 minutes, until the apples are tender. 4. Remove the apples from the cooker and keep warm. Drain the sauce into a small saucepan, bring to the boil then simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring continuously until it thickens. Pour the sauce over the apples and serve.

INGREDIENTS 6 apples 90g / 3.5 oz Butter – chopped into cubes 35g / 1.5oz slivered almonds 35g / 1.5oz chopped walnuts ½ tsp Ground cinnamon 225g / 8oz Light brown sugar 180ml / 6fl oz single cream 125ml / 4.5 fl oz apple juice

Report on the Wine Circle’s summer

T

o get us into the mood for summer, Mike Dobson took us on an entertaining whistle-stop tour Around the World in our May meeting. Our six stops (with wines in brackets) were France (Pinot Blanc), Sardinia (Vermontino), New Zealand (Grüner Weltliner), California (Zinfandel), Mexico (Malbec) and finally Macedonia (Vranec). A varied and fun tasting, which also tested our geographical skills. For our June meeting we visited the new premises of Hepworth Brewery near Brinsbury Pulborough. A talk about how the brewing process is carried out was followed by a guided tour of the state of the art new equipment by Andy and John, who were obviously very passionate about brewing excellent beers. Once back in the visitor centre we were given a number of their beers to taste, and members were able to decide which they liked best with the opportunity to buy their favourite beer of the evening at the Brewery shop. Thanks to Andy and John for their generosity,

8

both in knowledge and time. Our summer programme finished in very traditional fashion with a fish ’n’ chip supper with food provided by the Southwater chippie, who were not only very accommodating with our order, but also donated a bottle of wine to our raffle. Supper was followed by a tasting of the ‘44 liqueurs’ made by members. There were 16 in total, using various spirits including ouzo, rum, vodka, tequila, whisky, gin and goodness knows what else besides! The overall winner was a gin-based version, created by David Luxford. The Wine Circle resumes on Friday 8th September with Call my (Wine) Bluff. The coming year sees the Circle’s 40th anniversary which, rest assured, we will be celebrating in style. Why not come and join the party? New members always welcome. Kings Head supports local lad to represent his county in Argentina Colin and Oonagh, the landlord and landlady of the Kings Head in Billingshurst, have very kindly given a patron to Sussex Rugby! All 36 boys touring Argentina this summer were asked to find a patron to help with the rising cost of the tour since it was first organised two years ago. Alfie Burchfield approach Colin at the Kings Head after it had come to his attention that Colin was a huge rugby fan and showed all the big important matches on their many large screen TVs. They even opened their doors at 8.30am to serve beer and breakfast for ÂŁ10 for anyone who wanted to watch the recent and last Lions vs New Zealand match! Once Alfie turns 18 he says he will definitely be taking his rugby mates in the Kings Head to say thank you.

First Lark in the Park a huge success Station Road Gardens, Billingshurst, Sunday 16th July

O

n Sunday 16th July, (despite unintended competition from the Men’s Wimbledon final and the British Grand Prix), our first ‘Lark in the Park’ was well attended and a great success! Lark in the Park was the idea of Keith Brown (henceforth to be known as Billingshurst’s Micheal Eavis). Keith has been the driving force in turning the rather uninspired old cricket ground and scrubby play area into a beautiful garden over the last few years. The Friends of Station Road Gardens and other wellwishers became involved in organising a community performing arts showcase, which we hope will become a regular annual event. A group of regular dog-walkers and friends became the organising committee and local performing artists agreed to take part. On the day the show was entertainingly compèred by Natalie van de Braam, (a professional dancer and dance teacher, with a background in TV, film and a former Dolly Dealer with Bruce Forsyth) and Sue Pollard, an actress who now works for Fisher’s Farm. The show opened with lively, rocking covers from local band The Corvettes to get the party going followed by the women in black of the Rock Choir belting out their first set. King of Swing, Rob Nicholl switched to a more mellow tone and VMA Dance Group contributed performances in several different styles, including street dance and musical theatre. Sandra Myskow, Billingshust born and bred and well known teacher at The Weald school, was another popular act, her heartfelt rendition of The Eagles’ Hotel California was superb, with everyone joining in for the final chorus. There was outstanding vocal talent from young stars of the future – Emily Falkner and duo, Southbound (Hannah and Isabella Stevens). The Corvettes performed another set to close the show in style and despite a few clouds,

many stayed on long after the show was over. It really was a varied programme, representing all ages and catering for all musical tastes. A very strong base to build on for next year, when we hope even more acts will come forward and demonstrate just how much talent is hidden here in our creative community. We would also like to extend thanks to Stuart for running the plant stall; Anella, Mollie and Nimue for the drinks stand; Maggie and Anne for the cakes; Alice from The Little Café Co (now sadly ‘emigrated’ to Brighton); and the Community Partnership for providing First Aid cover (which was thankfully not needed). To Tesco and Sainsbury’s for donating soft drinks; the Leisure Centre for allowing people to use their toilets; The Railway Inn for providing plastic glasses for take outs; Clarity (Accountants) in Myrtle Lane who sponsored the event by paying for the generator and to EVERYONE who helped set up and clear away. Finally, to a fantastic audience who made it a great day and left the park amazingly litter free, despite the delicious looking elaborate picnics and barbecues. The costs to put on Lark in the Park were very low, relying on donations and volunteers (as does the garden generally), the collection and proceeds from sales will allow us to make a donation of over £200 to Chestnut Tree House and make a similar size donation to funds to buy more plants or equipment for the Gardens. All in all a great day was had by all and we are already discussing next year, so budding acts and gardening volunteers please get in touch: For infomation or to register an act for next year email: debraamschool@hotmail.com Facebook: Friends of Station Road Gardens Website: www.stationroadgardens.org.uk Jane Cross

Final countdown for St Catherine’s Hospice Dragon Boat Festival

S

t Catherine’s Hospice Dragon Boat Festival is bursting back into Tilgate Park on Sunday 10th September for another day of free, family fun. Sponsored by Vines of Gatwick the local hospice’s Dragon Boat Festival is one of its most exhilarating fundraisers, and this year it’s bigger than ever! Between 10am and 4pm, come along to cheer on 35 teams, made up of local businesses who have already signed up, as they race across Tilgate lake in a bid to be crowned 2017’s Dragon Boat champs. Back on land, get involved and try your luck on traditional stalls, like hook a duck and china smash, tackle a giant inflatable assault course, bounce on the bouncy castle, or relax with delicious food and drink from onsite food vendors and a fully equipped bar. This year, for the first time ever, the fun continues on into the evening, with live music from 4-8pm from

local bands. Tom Abbott, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at St Catherine’s said, “This year marks 15 years of our Dragon Boat Festival and we’re ready to celebrate! By coming along to support this free event, you’re helping us be there for terminally ill people in your local community when life comes full circle. Last year, our festival raised more than £50,000, and we’re aiming to raise even more this year, so we hope lots of you will come out to support us, at what is always a great day out for all ages. Don’t miss this ‘oarsome’ day out!” For more information please see May’s Village Tweet (viewable online) or visit: www.stch.org.uk/ DragonBoatFestival, email comfun@stch.org.uk, or telephone St Catherine’s Events Team on (01293) 447361. The North Singers have done it again!

I

n June The North Singers once again took part in the Horsham Performers Platform which is affiliated to The British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech. For the second year, this annual event included a category for choirs. Under their Music Director, Jon Openshaw, and Accompanist, Rosemary Hensor, The North Singers joined four other choirs taking part in Horsham. The event categories are judged by professional judges and are aimed at giving participants a stage on which to perform and helpful critiques of their performance. Each choir performed three pieces and following their performance, the Judge presented The North Singers, for the second year running, with a Certificate of Commendation scoring 8486 for technical and artistic performance. Once again, the choir thoroughly enjoyed the

experience and found listening to the other choirs an important part of the whole event. Chairman, Jean Spira said, “We are a small, happy choir and I would like to thank Jon Openshaw and Rosemary Hensor for all their hard work in bringing us to this standard. Congratulations to all concerned! “Because we are so small, we are always looking for new members to come and join us. If you would like to sing with us, we would love to hear from you. You don’t have to have any experience – the experience is in the learning. It is commonly understood now, that singing is very good for your health.” The North Singers rehearse every Wednesday evening at 7.30-9.15pm at Loxwood Village Hall, Loxwood. Details at www.thenorthsingers.com or call Jean Spira on (01403) 752534. Jean Spira

Have you discovered the Lions Clubs Bookshop?

B

illingshurst & District Lions Club has been selling secondhand books in Billingshurst for many years. For over 10 years the Club has had a shop in Jengers Mead. During that time many new homes have been built in the district and there may be many newcomers to the area who have not found us yet – this article is aimed at you! We are open every week from Monday to Saturday between 9am and 4pm excluding Public Holidays. The shop is manned by volunteers and the photograph shows Lions Chris Davis (left) and Ken Johnson waiting to give you a warm welcome. We have a comprehensive selection of pre-owned books. In the fiction sections there are many books from well-known authors covering all popular genres. The majority are paperbacks with the most being priced from 70p upwards, in the hardback section prices start at £1 up to maybe £2 for first editions and signed copies. There are sections devoted to Penguins and classics, as well as fantasy and horror. For those romantics among you there is a large section devoted to romantic fiction. We also

have a good selection of cheap children’s books. On the non-fiction shelves there are many categories including Gardening, Warfare, Art & Photography, Cooking, Crafts, History, Sport, the Natural World, Travel and Miscellaneous. There is also a comprehensive biography and autobiography section. Stock changes rapidly so it’s always worth popping in frequently to grab a bargain. In addition to the books we also sell CDs, DVDs and the ever popular jigsaw puzzles. We also have a presence at both Billingshurst and Christ’s Hospital train stations where there is an honesty box for purchases. We rely on donations of books from our supporters. However, we do not accept magazines as there is no demand for secondhand ones. We look forward to seeing you. Chris Davis, Publicity Officer, Billingshurst & District Lions Club

Book reviews / Accountancy

A Good Read September’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby The First Phone Call from Heaven – Mitch Alom One day a phone rings, then another one, and another. Now a small church in a small town in Michigan needs to deal with the question of what really happened. And it is only a matter of time before the country, and the world, is asking the question too. All the calls have one thing in common: the callers are deceased and want to tell their loved ones about heaven; to tell them that death is not the end. The town becomes a place of pilgrimage for people who are desperate to hear from their own friends and family. Of course, some are sceptical. Single father Sully – still grieving for his wife – is concerned when his young son starts asking why his mum hasn’t phoned him. So he sets out to unearth the true source of the phone calls. This touching novel is beautifully written and builds to a page-turning climax. Will Sully find out where the calls are coming from? Or are they really coming from heaven? Ultimately, the novel isn’t about where they came from. In fact it doesn’t really matter. Alom draws on our natural fear, not of our own deaths but of losing a loved one. What he offers is a story of a group of people who draw hope and comfort from these seemingly miraculous events.

20

And that is the inspiring message from this book. Maybe heaven exists, and maybe it doesn’t, but whether you believe or not, you can still take something from this thought provoking novel. Tom’s Midnight Garden – Philippa Pearce When you are born you occupy a small slot within history and for that period of time you live your life in your own way. But how much thought do you give to those people who came before you? Your house or your school now may have been someone else’s house or school; a place where someone else grew up and had hopes for the future. Tom is getting ready to enjoy his summer holiday when his older brother comes down with measles. To ensure that he doesn’t catch it, Tom is sent to stay with an aunt and uncle who live in a small flat at the top of a large old house. This is not how he imagined spending the summer. One night he is lying in bed, unable to sleep, when he hears the old grandfather clock in the house chiming. He counts the chimes. 9… 10… 11… 12… 13. 13? And so the most amazing and magical summer of Tom’s life begins as he meets Hatty, a young girl who wears strange clothes. This 1958 novel is a children’s classic and is frequently rated as one of the best children’s novels published since the war. It is inspiring with its message that life is to be lived to the full and reminds children that even their grandparents were young once.

Love Life Poetry: A Dreamer of Improbable Dreams Billingshurst has a poet in her midst, and a very talented one at that. Born in 1979, Mary Nevin-Crooks has been writing since she was a little girl but only turned to poetry following the sudden death of her mother in 2013. It is of course not unusual for a lifechanging event to result in thought provoking poetry, you have only to think of the First World War poets for proof of that. Love Life Poetry is a 270-page collection of some 225 poems written in non-rhyming free verse, the effect being as if Mary is pouring out her thoughts, emotions and life

experiences directly to you, the reader. Mary’s poems cover emotions we have all felt but, sadly, few of us share. She writes in a way that is easily understood; her beautiful poems cover every emotion from love, joy and happiness to loss, grieving, rejection and sadness. Mary will have you shedding a tear one minute, laughing the next, such is the feeling evident in her poems’ captivating words. Billingshurst Fire Station Open Day

T

his month we can show you exactly what we do as we would like to invite you to our Open Day on Saturday 23rd September. Doors will open from 12 noon. The crew have been working hard over the last few months planning the Open Day so it would be great to see as many people as possible. We will have the usual stalls, crafts, teas, cakes and soft drinks available. Chef Sussex will be doing the barbecue. We have also invited local ice cream shop The Fat Cow to come along as know how popular their ice creams are, especially with the children. We will offering fire safety advice and you can also ask us about home fire safety checks. Have you ever had one? Our ongoing hunt for potential new recruits will continue — if you are thinking of becoming a firefighter the Open Day is the perfect opportunity to ask questions, look around the fire station and get the feeling if the job is for you. Throughout the day the crew will be showing

you live demonstrations throughout the day including, Road Traffic Collision, Breathing Apparatus and Ladder drills. We also have one of the kids’ favourite, the chip-pan fire display. This display really does show you what could happen if you deal with a chip-pan fire the wrong way – and sadly many do. Of course, we are here to show you the right way. It’s one not to miss and we will repeat this display throughout the afternoon. Don’t forget the camera! It really will be a great day, not just for you but for us as we love meeting the community. The children (and adults!) can have a look around the fire engine. One of the firefighters will talk you through all the equipment. We will be supporting our charity, The Firefighters Charity, so all your donations on the day will go to them. We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday 23rd September from 12 noon. his year’s Billingshurst Fireworks Display promises to be spectacular. Spokesman Peter Hooper has told us that they have appointed local firm, Aurora Fireworks again this year, as “they always put on a professional display and give excellent value for money”. The theme this year is Magnificent Pops “so we can expect a selection of best popular music, past and present, to accompany a magnificent display of fireworks”. It will be held on 21st October at Jubilee Fields Sports Fields, on the western edge of the Village, just off the by-pass. Entrance to the site will be on foot, via either the main entrance off the A272, or over the footbridge leading from the Coombe Hill area of the Village. Tickets will be £6 per adult, £5 per child under 14, same as last year, although advance tickets are available at a number places in the Village, most notably Jack Fuller’s Fish and Chip Shop, the Lions Shop, the King’s Arms, Jake’s Cars and Chestnut Tree House shop, all at £1 off until Saturday 14th October, for those that want to save money, and will remain on sale, at the full price, for the

rest of the following week for those that want to avoid queues at the gate, on the night. Refreshments including burgers, hotdogs, a bar and soft drinks will be available, laid on by the Billingshurst Sports and Recreation Association (BSRA) and the Scouts & Guides, and a collection will be made in aid of Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. The gates will open at 6.30pm and the fireworks display will commence at 8.00pm This event is backed by a number of groups in the village, including BSRA, the Parish Council, the Billingshurst Partnership, Rotary and Lions, together with generous sponsorship from Coco’s, Leech Motors and Gozone and has now become the main autumn event in the community. “Life is just a bowl of…” John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

O

ver the years there have been many changes in farming methods. Some minor and some quite dramatic, and along with these changes has come a much larger diversity in the type of crops grown. This is especially true when we look at many horticultural crops. By that I mean crops that we grow for our own consumption. For instance, look at the lowly strawberry. For umpteen years this was a very seasonal fruit that we looked forward to with great enthusiasm. Now at any time of the year this once scarce berry will be there on the supermarket shelf. The joy of tasting that first burst of flavour in the spring has gone. Now the modern ‘five bounce berry’ (so named as it may have had to stand many thousands of miles of travel) is able to grace the dessert plate any time we want it, but I for one do miss the anticipation of ‘Strawberry Time’! The apple and pear now has no season either. Storage has improved to such an extent that it can be marketed from one end of the year to the other. That glorious tree ripened fruit – which cannot be stored for more than a couple of weeks – has to be carefully searched for if you want the true flavour of the variety of your choice. They may be crisp and juicy, but very few apples ever taste their best if they are not tree ripened. In other areas we have new tempting offerings that once we would have had great difficulty finding, especially with a ‘locally grown’ label attached. Kiwi fruits, apricots, blueberries, grapes (and English wine!), many new hybrids of cane fruits , like tay berry, sun berry, May berry. The list goes on as each year another fruit hits the market to tempt our tastebuds. There is one summer fruit though that I love above all others. As an apple and pear grower I may be accused of being a traitor to my cause, but no matter, it’s the very best as far as I’m concerned. It’s the cherry. Those wondrous globes of juice and flavour that burst in your mouth from early summer and continue to so do throughout the heat of mid-

30

summer. The trouble with these fruits though, is they are the very devil to grow! The trees are inclined to grow like Jack’s beanstalk, which in the past called for huge, wide-based cherry ladders that could take two men to handle, and nerves of steel to climb the multi-runged monsters. Added to this is the fact that as well as us liking them, so does every other creature that can reach them. Many years ago in the cherry orchards of the Weald of Kent it was not unusual to find many devices employed in an attempt to deter birds from gorging themselves on the ripening fruit prior to the harvest. Sheets of corrugated iron hung over two posts which could be banged together by trailing ropes, bird scaring bangers hidden inside the trees’ hanging canopy that scared the living daylights out of you when they went off as you passed. I even knew of one farm that hired two teenagers in the evenings to roar round the orchard on motorbikes that had the baffles knocked out from their exhaust pipes! I’m sure the boys enjoyed it, less so the locals though. To rub salt further into the wound, cherries have a disturbing habit of splitting if rain should fall on them as they ripen. The answer? Spend loads of money! The modern cherry orchard is one of the most protected, and as a result, most costly crops to grow. All the trees sit under huge arching spans of aluminium so that netting can be put over them to keep the birds out, and plastic sheeting can be pulled across if rain is forecast as they ripen. This, though, in turn raises yet another headache for the grower. How do you grow a tree that wants to reach for the sky, in a tunnel that has a roof only 10 or 15ft high? Here’s where the skill of the pruner and the rootstock breeder comes into its own. With the combined efforts of these two the trees are held down to height levels that allow the grower to pick the fruit from ground level and prevent the loss of his tunnel every time it rains. So, enjoy this beautiful fruit folks, and I hope this helps you to understand why cherries can be so darn expensive. And by the way, if you still feel that it’s a tad too dear… you can always have an apple! John Nash

Food for thought – understanding dog food labelling

I

n the UK pet food manufacturers have to abide by legislation set out by the food standards agency. All labelling must contain the following information and this is where some of the confusion lies. The label must state whether the food is complete or complementary – complete foods contain everything the animal needs to maintain its health when fed at the stated levels. Complementary foods need to be fed together with other foodstuffs such as mixer biscuit being designed to be fed with meat to achieve a balanced diet. The label must state the name and address of the manufacturer or agent, the weight of the bag, the best before date, batch number and a feeding guide. Ingredients. The most interesting and important part of the label is the ‘composition’ or ingredients list and some of these can certainly be confusing. It really does pay to scrutinise the ingredients list especially if you have an animal sensitive to certain ingredients as happened with a customer recently. They brought a bag of dog treats to the till along with some food and while we were talking the owner mentioned the dog had an allergy to chicken. I decided to check the ingredients and the treats contained 30% chicken despite the bold packaging indicating ‘liver flavour’! So it does pay to double check. As mentioned above, ingredients are sometimes referred to as ‘composition’ and must be listed in descending order of weight so the first ingredient is always the largest part of the composition of the food. Now this is where things get interesting, as a dog food labelled as ‘chicken flavour’ need only contain a minimum of 4% chicken to comply with legal obligations. This chicken can be included as chicken meat meal, chicken oil or chicken digest. Another interesting term is ‘meat and animal derivatives’. These are by-products of the human food industry and can include offal and bone meal, both highly nutritious but not popular with humans. Again, with highly sensitive dogs, it pays to choose a brand where each ingredient is listed individually rather than placed under the ‘derivatives’ tag so you can be sure of exactly what has gone into your pet’s food. By labelling the food in this way it allows some leeway over the individual ingredients meaning they can be changed from batch to batch.

Cereals. Cereals and cereal derivatives can cover things such as maize, rice, wheat, oats and barley to name some of the most common cereals used in the manufacture of dog food. They can be included either in wholegrain form or split into their component parts such as maize flour, maize gluten and maize meal. Protein content is another confusing issue for dog owners and the quality varies greatly. Protein from meat sources will be much higher quality and easier to digest than proteins from plant origin such as soya or potato but they come at a greater cost to the manufacturer thus making the end product feed more expensive, but meat proteins are much easier for the dog to digest and they can tolerate high levels of good quality meat proteins. Protein is essential for growth and repair of tissue such as hair and skin and is also an important energy source in dogs. Most adult dry dog foods will contain between 20 and 30% protein. Oils and fats. Again, the quality of these vary greatly. Manufacturers only have to put the percentage included on the bag and some foods can contain high levels of highly processed fat to make the food palatable. Essential fatty acids also known as Omega 3 and 6 cannot be made by the dog and must be provided in the diet; they are most commonly found in fish oils. If your dog is prone to weight gain look for a diet with no more than 10% fat in a dry food (2.5% in wet food) Vitamins. If Vitamins A and D are added to the product, their presence and level must be declared. The added quantity should be declared under ‘additives’. Manufacturers may also include the total amount guaranteed at the end of shelf life (which also factors in the naturally present quantity) under ‘analytical constituents’. The Regulations also lay down the units which must be used to declare the level. Remember every dog is different and no one food will suit all dogs, but by understanding some common terms on labels you will be in a good position to choose a good food for your dog. A Dog Diary

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst… Wed 2 Aug. What a miserable day. It poured with rain. Had to Sun 30 Jul. I knew something was up. The bags started to wear that horrible raincoat to get the paper. And again for a appear and boxes filled and tempers a little frayed. I watched quick wee-wee walk. In the evening the rain had nearly stopped with interest as the big red car was packed and the little trailer and we went for another walk – no raincoat thank goodness. too. Finally I was given the go-ahead and hopped into the car Thurs 3 Aug. The lady in the paper shop asked my name and and my hated red harness put on. A Helping Hand Could private tuition benefit your child?

B

arely a day goes by without schools making the news in one way or another. Recent headlines have screamed: ‘British Children bottom of the European League Table’ and ‘Crisis in the Classroom’. Is it any wonder that as parents we have never been more concerned about our children’s schooling? Many of us are so concerned that we are employing private tutors to help our children achieve their goals. How do I know whether my child might benefit from private tuition? Is your child struggling with course work? Are they stressed about certain lessons? Do they avoid certain subjects during homework sessions? Does your child find course material too simple? Do they complain of boredom and does the teacher accuse them of being disruptive or a daydreamer? Do you feel that your child is neglected by the system because they are neither special needs, nor especially gifted? If you answered “Yes” to any of the above questions then your child might benefit from private tuition. What sort of tutor should I choose? School is probably the best place to start. They know your child already and might be able to offer ‘in school’ help. Even if that isn’t an option good teachers will

34

be happy to discuss what your child needs from a tutor. Some children require just a little extra attention and support with homework. Others benefit from learning study skills. Others might need to re-learn things they missed through absence or that they simply didn’t understand the first time around. What do I look for? It sounds obvious but you really need someone who can teach! Being specialised in a subject area is great but teaching skills are everything. A tutor should be able to relate to a child and explain things at his level. Once or twice a week for two or three months is a good starting point. After this time you should have a good idea how much tutoring is helping your child. What questions should I ask? Check professional references and qualifications. Ask to see a copy of their CRB (criminal Records Bureau) check. Ask about any career gaps on their CV. If the tutor is employed at a school you can ask for a reference from the head teacher. Introduce them to your child so you can see how they relate to each other. The right tutor can boost results but more importantly they can also boost a child’s confidence and self esteem. Golden Evening for Weald Students

O

n Thursday 13th July 700 students, proud parents and esteemed guests from the community all gathered to celebrate another outstanding year at The Weald School’s annual Gold Awards ceremony. Students at The Weald excel in a wide range of skills throughout the year and this annual event recognises exceptional successes for effort, progress, and wider contribution to the school. Students should feel very proud of their achievements. Guests were welcomed by buskers and student helpers in front reception who then directed them to the reception in the School Hall. During the reception, guests could mingle, enjoy refreshments and observe artwork produced by talented Weald students. Music was also played by students to entertain guests. Guest speaker Joe Cummiskey added a motivational and energetic address which echoed the school’s ethos of positive commitment and engagement. It was clear that Joe made a difference to all in the room. A large number of students left inspired, not only by their magnificent achievements,

but by Joe’s infectious ‘can-do, believe in yourself’ attitude. Joe and his team provide support to over 350 children and their families in education, health and social care. Their mission is to alleviate extreme poverty and facilitate lasting change in the lives of the most vulnerable children and families living in urban slums in Uganda. Joe inspired Weald students during his speech by saying, “You are only given one life, so follow the path that makes you happy,” and then went on to congratulate students on their achievements. All who attended left the evening on a high and felt proud to be part of The Weald community. First Ever House Cup Victory for Livingstone at The Weald School

T

he Weald School’s Livingstone House celebrated an outstanding year culminating with a clean sweep of trophies in the final assembly. After completing the three-peat (3 consecutive years) of Sports Day and Sport Culture wins, Livingstone House won the termly House Cup. With all these categories going towards the House Cup, it was looking good for the reds. The House Cup takes into consideration a number of things including house points, tracking and commendations, the weekly quiz and attendance amongst other activities. The Livingstone students were in fine voice when it was announced that Livingstone House had won the prestigious House Cup (for the very first time!) which meant that they were off timetable on the

final day of term enjoying some inflatable fun and competitive team activities. A very happy Mr Healy (Head of Livingstone House) commented, “It was a great way to end the year. I have been really impressed with the attitude, hard work and dedication that my students have shown this year. We are a very sporty house, but it was great to win the House Cup for the very first time. We now look forward to trying to retain the House Cup next year!” A huge thank you to AJW Aviation based in Slinfold, for sponsorship of our House Cup fun activity day. The students had a brilliant day despite the grey weather. Jody Healy, Head of Livingstone House Photo: Izzy Lewis, Events & Communications Manager

Beautiful blackberries

utumn’s scent is sweet and sour. There is a definite tang in the air which indicates that summer is drawing to a close. Don’t be sad though. Autumn has its compensations, especially at harvest time: picking early apples, cold from the tree and dappled with dampness is one of life’s little pleasures. But if you don’t grow fruit in your own plot you don’t have to miss out, just look to the hedgerows. As kids we used to dig out an empty ice cream tub and go blackberrying in the autumn. It seems to have died-out a bit as a family pastime but that means there’s more for the rest of us! Don’t worry about breaking any laws. If the fruit is growing in the wild it is anyone’s for the taking. But why stop at wild blackberries. How about growing your own? It’s very simple. My dad used to grow them over two discarded wrought-iron gates he found in a skip! You don’t need anything quite that elaborate. Rig up a simple post and wire frame. Two 2m / 6 foot posts knocked into the ground 2m / 6 foot apart and joined together with horizontal strands of

galvanised wire spaced about 45cm / 18 inches apart will do. You can also grow them over sheds and walls. Plant the blackberry plant in manure, or compostenriched soil at the base of the frame and gradually train the plant up it, tying in the shoots as they grow. It will spread to cover the frame and provide an annual crop. Remember to cut out old fruited stems each autumn and tie in the new ones. If space is limited there are some lovely new compact varieties available. There are plenty of thornless, highly flavoured varieties. Ashton Cross produces a heavy crop of intensely flavoured fruit and Merton is a compact thornless which produces enormous blackberries and is very suited to a small space. I encourage you to plant a blackberry bush this year and in the future you will enjoy one of the purest pleasures autumn can offer. Happy blackberrying! Rachel Leverton

Children in Need – Friday 17th November Please make a note in your diaries to come to the Billingshurst Centre in Roman Way to support our Coffee Morning for Children in Need; Friday 17th November between 10.30am-12.30pm. If you are able to bake a cake or donate a raffle prize then that would be wonderful. Please keep an eye on our website or social media pages for more information nearer the time. (Photo shows our departing member of staff Dan with our own Pudsey Bear at last year’s Children in Need event).

Farewell and Thank you

Free – Electric Blanket Testing

Everyone at Billingshurst Parish Council and at the Billingshurst Centre was sad to say goodbye to long-standing casual staff member Daniel Buddle. Dan has worked for the Centre for a number of years and is leaving us to take up a full time role following his graduation from University this summer. We wish Dan all the best with his future endeavours, he will be sorely missed.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue is offering a free electric blanket testing session at Billingshurst Community & Conference Centre on Wednesday 25th October 2017. Booking is strictly by appointment only and are available on a first come/first served basis. Elderly members of the community and those with mobility issues can be especially vulnerable so everyone who uses an electric blanket are encouraged to take up the offer of this free test. Please help spread the word about this important service and call the WSFRS Community Fire Safety Team on 0845 872 9719 to book your appointment.

Our Community Volunteers – Margaret Millichamp

M

argaret Millichamp had her first ride on a horse earlier than most; her father who was stationed in Malaya with the Army, rode with her on his horse when she was only a few weeks old. Horses have remained a central part of Margaret’s life, and Wednesday mornings find her with her veteran pony Jack, volunteering with the Happy Landings Carriage Driving Group, which is affiliated to the Riding for the Disabled Association, and provides opportunities for disabled adults to drive a pony. Specially adapted carriages are used and each one is accompanied by three cyclists; one at the front and two cycling behind the carriage, so that in case of emergency the front cyclist can hold the pony while the other two take care of the disabled person. Including the Whip (the volunteer carriage driver), therefore, each ride requires at least four volunteers and, as there are usually four ponies involved, plus more people who help with transporting the ponies and offering other help, there are usually around 20 volunteers at each session. The activity is very popular, with disabled drivers attending on a fortnightly basis to provide opportunities for more people, but there is still a waiting list.

Margaret, who has lived in Malaya, Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) and later Scotland, was offered a job in the south in the 1970s working for the Eridge Horse Trials in Kent and later moved to Ifold with her husband, where she met the founder of Happy Landings, Ann Sheldrake, and joined the group as one of its first volunteers in the early 1990s. Originally the group used the country lanes around Ifold for carriage driving, but this became more dangerous due to an increase in traffic, and so now the group operates near Dunsfold. Margaret feels that the benefits of being in the countryside and the contact with animals is hugely beneficial and clearly enjoys sharing her own love of horses with others. Happy Landings would love to hear from anyone interested in volunteering. Previous experience is not necessary as training is given, but you need to be able to ride a bicycle. Please contact Carol Porter on (01403) 741355. Pippa Cleeve If you know someone who you feel deserves recognition in Our Community Volunteers please email Pippa: pppclv@spektrum.demon.co.uk
