f you missed this year’s superb Lark in the Park you can read the report on page 16. Things are hotting up for Horsham District’s Year of Culture 2019. The grants for the winning projects have just been announced (see page 40). Among those selected within the Village Tweet distribution area are Billingshurst Community Partnership, The Weald School, West Chiltington Dramatic Society and Sussex Green Living. But you don’t have to wait until 2019 to get involved. Why not sponsor a Gruffalo? All is revealed on page 18. Grahame Cover: Bethan Male was the Ladies Half Marathon winner last year with a time of 1 hour, 27 minutes, 36 seconds. Apple Strudel METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C Fan/Gas 5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment. 2. Mix the quartered apples with the cinnamon, lemon zest and juice, sugar and raisins. In a small frying pan, melt 20g/¾oz butter and fry the breadcrumbs until golden-brown, then add these to the apple mixture. 3. Melt the remaining butter in a pan. On a clean, dry tea-towel lay a sheet of the filo and brush with some of the melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and repeat until you have used all the filo. Layering the pastry with the melted butter helps to create flaky layers. 4. Place the filling along the length of the pastry along one side about 2-3cm/1" from the edge. Using the tea-towel to help you, roll the pastry up to enclose the filling. Tuck the ends in and roll the strudel seam-side down onto the lined baking sheet. Brush with the remaining melted butter. 5. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden-brown. Leave to cool to room temperature and dust with icing sugar. Slice and serve with cream, ice cream or custard.

How to Boost Your Mental Health

I

t’s no secret that music is a powerful force that affects us all. While we each have our own tastes in terms of preferred styles, genres, performers and sounds, it is a universal truth that music benefits everyone’s mental health and state of mind. Research has shown (Steward 2013) that people who sing in choirs experience high levels of well-being. These findings also suggest that the experience of using your voice to make music may be enhanced when you feel that you are part of a cohesive social group. There is something unique about moving and breathing with other people in synchronicity. Singing definitely stimulates the production of beneficial hormones and neuro-chemical changes in the body, one of those hormones being dopamine, which is associated with pleasure and reward for the brain. Many of us find ourselves in stressful situations every day, whether it is at work, meeting the commitments of running a family, juggling tight finances or the anxiety of having to live with the burden of loneliness. Singing reduces stress hormones, increases antibodies which strengthen the immune system, boosts endorphins and increases

oxytocin that helps to reduce anxiety and stress. Singing in a choir can be extremely cathartic: it’s a great outlet for all emotions and can often work as a kind of therapy. It is an accepted fact that music can provide an incredible healing power for all! If you live in the Village Tweet catchment area there is a lively and well-established choir on your doorstep. Billingshurst Choral Society (BCS) has around 90 members and if you are interested in finding out more about us, why not come along to our next Open Evening? This is on Tuesday 18th September, 7.30pm at Billingshurst Primary School (RH14 9RE). The choir has a wide repertoire ranging from Handel, Bach and Beethoven to Verdi, Vaughan Williams and Gilbert & Sullivan. It also includes modern composers such as Chilcott, Goodall, Jenkins, Rutter and Todd. Our next concert will be at Chichester Cathedral on Sunday 20th October when we will be performing The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins. Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races Sunday 30th September. Final update!

I

t is time once again for the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races. This year’s races will take place on Sunday 30th September. The Half Marathon will start at 10am and the 10km race will start at 10.20am. We are hoping that we will have close to 2000 runners taking part on the day in the two races. This will be the 36th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the third year of the new 10km race which was introduced for the first time in 2016. The whole event is organised entirely by volunteers and raises a lot of money for charity and also makes significant donations to various groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village who help with the staging of the race. Last year we raised a lot of money for St Catherine’s Hospice and once again this year we are supporting this wonderful charity. Please do get out and cheer on the runners on the race routes and come along to the Green to support the event. On the Green itself there will be plenty of additional activity. Platinum Ambulance Service will have a strong presence to help with any runners who suffered illness or injury, there are physiotherapists on hand to massage aching limbs. There will also be a number of different drinks and catering stalls as well as plenty of

music and entertainment for all the family. The Barns Green Half Marathon will this year be started by the Headmaster of Christ’s Hospital School, Simon Reid. This year, as all the runners go through the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School, the wonderful 100-strong school marching band will be playing which is sure to give a boost to all the runners as they make their way round the course. Last year over 2000 runners registered for the Half Marathon and 10k races which follow routes on closed roads through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. As well as the Christ’s Hospital band, there will be a number of other bands and groups playing at different points on the race routes to help keep all the runners motivated. It’s still not too late to take part. For further details on how to take part in the 2018 race just visit the Barns Green Half Marathon website: barnsgreen-half.org.uk. Lark in the Park does it again! Station Road Gardens, Billingshurst, Sunday 22nd July

A

gloriously sunny Sunday, thankfully broken by a few wisps of cloud and an occasional breeze, saw the second Lark in the Park at Station Road Gardens, Billingshurst. The audience had planned ahead and a colourful array of gazebos and umbrellas began to appear from 11am to offer a bit of shade. Lark in the Park entirely depends on volunteers: people who give up their time to plan, perform, make cakes, grow plants, co-ordinate the performers, make and display posters, run stalls, compère, help set up and clear up and offer first aid. By its very nature it is difficult to get everyone together in advance. There are no rehearsals and so it is a case of hoping it will all come together on the day, which it mainly did. As they did last year, Corvette opened the show and got us off to a great start. Lisa Falkner then changed the tone with some belting show tunes adding some elegance and sophistication to the afternoon. Regulars VMA performed an eclectic mix of dances and included a singer who has been invited to perform as a solo act next year. A few technical difficulties with the sound meant that people sitting further away missed out a bit on the performances from swing singer Rob Nicholl and new to Lark in the Park singer Grace Read. Our new band this year, Growler, brought things up tempo again with some old favourites including Cockney Rebel, The Jam, The Cure and the Osmonds – and was there ever a more appropriate opener than Heatwave! Sandra Myskow was here again to keep the party going and then folk group Cotillion took the stage, treating us to a rhyming folk story and their catchy tunes got the audience dancing. Their set was cut a little short by a technical hitch, but hopefully gave us enough of a taste to want to hear more from them in the future. The variety of acts offered something for all ages and tastes. Many, many thanks to the performers, organisers and helpers: to Keith Brown for his hard work with the Gardens all year round; the gardeners and committee members who helped; to the Scouts for their marquee; to the cake bakers and sellers; to Linda for offering First Aid (thankfully not needed!); to Natalie and Sue for compèring; to the coffee van man; to Corvette’s sound man and to Noah for assisting. Thanks also to the donation collectors, the clearer uppers and to the audience for braving the heat, for being patient and for clearing up so well after yourselves. The event and Gardens are run by volunteers. While there was some grant money to establish the Gardens in the first place, this does not cover on-going maintenance and funding is hard to come by. We are very lucky to have the generosity of Architectural Plants who donate a considerable amount of plants every year. Lark in the Park is a celebration of the park, encouraging more people to come and enjoy it. It is also, in a small way, a fundraiser to

16

raise money to fund a few things vital for general upkeep. The only expenses for the day are the cost of the generator and sound technician, everything else is donated. Last year we were also able to make a donation to Chestnut Tree House, but sadly the collection this year was disappointing (£196.47 after sound and generator expenses) and we will be unable to do this. Three volunteers went round with buckets hoping for some loose change. Many people were happy to donate, reflecting their appreciation of the event and of the park; one person donated £10 and Allan and Diane from Arun Valley Pharmacy made a very generous donation. Others contributed by buying cakes and plants and the coffee van man donated a percentage of his takings. Sadly, a minority seemed a bit affronted about being approached for a contribution. Perhaps they contribute to the community in other ways. As I write this I’m contemplating the wider issue of public service and giving back to the community. There is a danger that we are all so busy with the task of keeping a roof over our heads, domestic chores, raising children and everything that goes with daily life that we have little time to even think about making a contribution to wider society. Yet there is an ever-increasing dependence on the voluntary sector to provide services we all rely on as local authority funding is stretched further and our population increases. Many organisations depend on people giving their time to keep things going for the benefit of others. These people are inevitably often retired or semiretired as they have the most time, but as the retirement age rises these volunteers will become fewer. Where is the future supply of volunteers to run events, sit on committees and councils and provide services that were once funded? Station Road Gardens is an example of what can be achieved with vision, enthusiasm and drive from one man who was able to encourage others on board and achieve so much. But gardens need constant upkeep; volunteers to help are always very welcome. If Lark in the Park is to go forward we need some helpers or sponsors for next year. New performers also welcome. We hope it could become an annual event on the last Sunday of term before the schools break up – 21st July next year – would be great to have a bigger and better event to celebrate Horsham District’s Year of Culture in 2019! If anyone would like to become more involved (in the garden or next years’ Lark in the Park) please contact Keith Brown or Jane Cross through the Facebook page ‘Friends of Station Road Gardens’ or by e-mail: keith-brown@talktalk.net Jane Cross Top: Rob Nicholl Bottom: One of many groups of family and friends soaking up the sounds and sun (Photos: Jane Cross)

C

alling all walking enthusiasts and nature lovers! Join St Catherine’s Hospice on Sunday 14th October for a challenging hike through the picturesque Sussex countryside.  Taking you through Sussex fields and past historic landmarks including the Balcombe Viaduct, Ardingly Reservoir and Wakehurst Place Seedbank, this crosscountry hike will allow you to enjoy the changing colours of autumn while raising funds for your local hospice. The full hike is 13 miles, with 9 and 4 mile routes also available making this a family friendly event – even suitable for the dog! Tom Abbott, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at St Catherine’s said, “We’re excited to launch the Sussex Landmarks Hike. The orange tones of autumn aren’t only beautiful to walk in, but also promote St Catherine’s colours to remind us why we’re here – to care for local people. It’s care

that’s only made possible by people like you taking on challenges like Sussex Landmarks. I hope lots of you will join us for this stunning hike through the country.” St Catherine’s is hoping to raise £20,000 from Sussex Landmarks by asking walkers for a donation or to raise sponsorship. This will allow them to offer expert care to even more local terminally ill people in the future. At the moment, the local hospice can only care for one in three people who need them but with your help and support, they’re determined to care for everyone. Advance registration is £8 for adults (£10 on the day) and £5 for children. Registration is open from 9am on the day at Victory Hall, Balcombe, where the walk will begin. Year of Culture / Health and wellbeing

Sponsor a Gruffalo and be part of a global phenomenon!

T

o celebrate the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 patron, the children’s author Julia Donaldson MBE, writer of The Gruffalo, Horsham District Council will be sending 20 Gruffalo soft toys on a worldwide journey during 2019 – but they need human help! The 20 Gruffalo toys, each individually identifiable by their bespoke labels, will set off on their journey in January 2019, but for them to get going each one will need a sponsor. Already eight have been sponsored, there are just 12 left. The premise of Global Gruffalo is straightforward – receive the Gruffalo, take a photo of yourself and the toy and upload to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram via @GlobalGruffalo, or using #GlobalGruffalo, saying where you are in the world, then pass him on to someone else to do the same – with the aim to get all of them home to Horsham for December 2019 to be part of an exhibition at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens during 2020. For a bit more fun you can also visit the Global Gruffalo website where you can fill in a postcard with some more information and view a map where you’ll be able to see where your Gruffalo has been and where others are visiting. Cllr Jonathan Chowen, Horsham District Council’ Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said, “It cannot be underplayed just how important this project is to the Year of Culture. By working with Magic Light we are shining a spotlight on our district, and in creating this incredible project our district will be linked with a world renowned character. â€œThis project is a brilliant way of collaborating with

our Horsham District resident and Patron to the Year of Culture, Julia Donaldson MBE, in the year that her wonderful book, The Gruffalo, celebrates its 20th year since publication. “It’s also a great analogy for our Year of Culture in 2019, the Gruffalo going out to the four corners of the globe, linking everyone to the United Kingdom and the Horsham District in particular. Plus, let’s face it, it’ll be a fun project to be involved with! Sponsors will need to be on social media and will be encouraged to look after their Gruffalo, either by ensuring the toy gets moved on, or by encouraging others to share its whereabouts or take them away somewhere. Plans already coming forward include aiming for the most travelled with Gatwick Airport, visiting Peru with Jodie Kidd and Chestnut Tree House Hospice, crushing grapes at the Benguela Cove vineyard in South Africa, checking out the sites with Saxon Weald and visiting all the primary schools in the district with the help of Swan Walk Shopping Centre. The project is being led by the Year of Culture team, working closely with Magic Light Pictures and Julia Donaldson MBE. Inspired? If you’re interested in sponsoring a Gruffalo please email yearofculture2019@ horsham.gov.uk or call 01403 215060. Heather Pepper, Horsham District Council Julia Donaldson MBE with Gruffalo. Syringe Driver presented to Midhurst Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Service he Billingshurst Macmillan Support Group have been fundraising for the Midhurst Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Service for many years now. Earlier in the year some members of the group visited the staff at the Midhurst centre to let them know the amazing sum of £63,796 that they had raised for them in 2017 (see Village Tweet, May). However, at this meeting, Terri Ashpool, Chair of the Group, decided that it would nice to raise funds for a specific item for the centre, and it was easily decided by Jo Stuttaford (Macmillan Joint Service Leader) that a much needed Syringe Driver would be an amazing gift. So the group set about informing all they met about this specific fund and that £1000 would be needed to purchase a new Syringe Driver. This was mentioned at local events, such as village markets and film nights. Other donations came in from Fowlers and the Wednesday Club in Billingshurst, but the largest donation was from Stephen Foster who made collections at various David Bowie tribute concerts where he performed raising an amazing £230. The money was raised within just two months, thanks

to the generosity of the people from the Billingshurst and Pulborough areas, the Syringe Driver was ordered and arrived last week. So on Tuesday 31st July some members of the group travelled over to the Midhurst Centre to make the presentation. Terri said that the welcome they received was amazing, all the staff at the Midhurst Centre were so happy. Jo from the Centre said, “We would like to thank the Billingshurst team so much for raising the money which has enabled them to purchase the Syringe Driver for us. This an essential piece of very expensive equipment that enables patients to receive a constant source of drugs for pain and symptom control when they are unable to take medication by mouth’. Obituary / About the house

Ken Johnson RIP

K

en Johnson, who died suddenly in July, was a rare human being. Ever smiling, Ken was a doer and one who shunned personal agendas and historic baggage in favour of what was best for our community. With an avuncular twinkle in his eye, his style was simply to get the job done. Ken’s infectious chuckle was his hallmark. He had opinions and expressed them unambiguously but was blessed with the grace to listen to others and to take counter views on board. Non-effective meetings irritated the retired banker. You needed to watch out when he started to rock back and forth on his chair when he’d had enough of the waffle before bringing the assembled company sharply back to the point in question. He welcomed on to committees that he chaired those who delivered results with few meetings and with little blather. The revitalisation of BilliFest, for example, now an overwhelming success, was brought back to life through Ken’s delegated group of worker bees who met infrequently but who responded to his leadership. Ken did not seek glory, but his track record shows a ubiquitous dedication to Billingshurst affairs over 30 years. He was a founding member of the Billingshurst Community Partnership (BCP), he drafted its constitution and was its Company Secretary. His financial background was a great asset. As a key member of the team that earlier restructured the (then) Village Hall, now the Community Centre, he helped transform it into the viable asset we enjoy today. For this, Ken was running the financial engine room. Within the Billingshurst Community Partnership, he focused on ‘The Economy’. He drafted chunks of the Billingshurst Community Action Plan and the more recent Community-led Plan. Likewise, the current Neighbourhood Plan. In the early 2000s, he was one of the Founding Fathers of the Billingshurst Chamber of Commerce and helped guide it through to its current independence and remarkable success. Ken was doggedly committed to rallying the retail sector. The Community Shop was an example of

how Ken and the Billingshurst Community Partnership developed a project to benefit small arts and crafts traders with a cost-effective opportunity to get their businesses off the ground. But perhaps Ken was most present in his high-viz jacket at the Lions Bookshop in Jengers Mead. Here, he could also see the comings and goings of the infamous car park and was instrumental in much of the improvement we see there since clamping was banned. He too was involved in that lobby, as he was in the ongoing parking strategy with the Horsham District Council and the community’s long-range development strategy, the Supplementary Planning Document. One of Ken’s most visible legacies will be the gleaming new community bus. Weekly, Ken could be seen driving senior residents in the old Community Transport vehicle but so effective was his lobbying for this invaluable service that Billingshurst was awarded a brand new 12-seater via an EU grant administered by the Central Government Transport Association. Just another job delivered. Banker/family man/community worker, Ken Johnson was big hearted, convivial, and gave trusted and sage counsel. Billingshurst benefited in countless ways from his low profile hard work that delivered real results. He was an example to us all of how to go about contributing to our community. His funeral was held on Monday 23rd July. Our heart-felt condolences go to Jean and their family. Ken is sorely missed by his friends and colleagues, and Billingshurst has lost one of its most dedicated and unassuming servants. A Trip to Scarborough

A

s announced in last month’s Village Tweet, the Billingshurst Dramatic Society are combining with Lights and Bushels Theatre Company to perform this new adaptation of a Sheridan play written by Horsham playwright Barry Syder. It’s 1781 in the popular Georgian spa resort of Scarborough where northern fashionable society are descending in droves for ‘the season’ to ‘take the waters’. Tom Worthy has arrived penniless and is hoping to squeeze some money out of his notoriously mean brother, the outrageously camp dandy Lord Foppington. However, things are not going well for Tom. He is on his uppers because his dreadful older brother holds the family purse strings. His lordship’s vanity and obsession with fashion know no bounds, but whereas he spends fortunes on his foppish appearance, he objects strongly to having to provide any support to his younger brother. Tom’s inheritance is in trust until he marries, so Lord Foppington keeps him in poverty to ensure this never happens. Tom learns that a marriage has been arranged between his bother and Felicity, the daughter of wealthy local landowner (and borderline psychopath) Sir Tunbelly Clumsy. The nuptials have been arranged by society matchmaker Mrs Coupler, but the two have never actually met. Can Tom, by pretending to be his

brother, steal Felicity and her fortune for himself? A Trip to Scarborough is a brand new adaptation of the Sheridan original delivered in a modern accessible style. The playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan is best remembered for his comedies The Rivals and A School for Scandal, both of which ruthlessly satirise the fashionable society of the time. Less well known, but similar in style, A Trip to Scarborough also features larger than life characters whose behaviour is by turns appalling and ridiculous. Barry, writer and director, says, “Sheridan’s plays were the Blackadder and Fawlty Towers of their day.” The comedy is very much in the characterisation and the plot with the pompous and vain of society receiving their deserved comeuppance. Grab a seat, put yourself back into the 18th century and be prepared to laugh your wig off as this is set to be a very amusing and entertaining night out. Performances are at Fishers Farm Theatre on October 11th-13th. Tickets will be available from midSeptember from Mansell McTaggarts, High Street Billingshurst or online via the Society’s website: www.billingshurstdramaticsociety.com. Caro Anderson

Horsham District Council’s Environmental Health Service – award winners once again

T

he Food Safety Team from Horsham District Council’s Environmental Health Department has once again been named Primary Authority of the year. They picked up the award at the Regulatory Excellence Awards event held in London on 20th June 2018.  The accolade is awarded by the Department for Business Energy and Strategy (BEIS) recognising regulatory organisations for achieving positive outcomes through good practice. Horsham were also successful by winning the same award in 2015 for its partnership with the trade association representing retail butchers throughout England. Through the advent of Primary Authority, Horsham has developed recognised expertise in meat and meat products through its work with organisations such as the National Federation of Meat & Food Traders and the Guild of Fine Food. This year’s award comes as result of the Horsham’s Primary Authority Partnership with the Chichester Biltong Company who are a well-established Sussexbased business producing biltong jerky. These unique products are processed using specific technical processes. These processes differ from normal

recognised food manufacturing techniques and use fermentation, drying, preservatives, etc. The robust controls required ensure the product is safe to eat and rely on scientific evidence which is often difficult to source and understand. Tricia Youtan, Cabinet Member for Community & Wellbeing said, “Winning this prestigious award for a second time is clear recognition of our credible expertise in unique businesses sectors producing artisan meat products. While supporting businesses through Primary Authority, we have in turn shared technical expertise and support to other Local Authority Food Safety Teams. This gives them confidence, knowledge and additional skills so that they are confident that businesses they enforce are complaint and safe. “Winning against some notable competition, Horsham are the only Council to have won this award twice, congratulations to the team and all the hard work that has led to this excellent achievement”. Bypass bridge Lighting Project West Sussex County Council plan to install lighting across the pedestrian  bridge  spanning  Billingshurst  bypass. The works will be undertaken by SSE Contracting and are currently planned for this autumn and should be completed in time for the Jubilee Fields Fireworks Display in mid-October. The bridge and some access paths will need to be closed between 17th to 23rd September between 0930 to 1530, meaning that early morning and late afternoon onwards this route should still be available for use; although extra care will be required as footways could have temporary surfaces or be narrowed by the presence of safety fencing. These closure times should be good news for local residents as the planned closures are less than was originally thought to be needed. The project will also include a large scale cutback of vegetation along the pathway borders leading down the path from the bypass into Jubilee Fields.

Installing power to both sides of the bridge will require a trench across the A29. The plan is to trench across the A29, using two-way lights, off peak only. This starts 10th September and will be completed by 14th September.

Lights on in West Sussex If you are aware of footway or street lighting which  isn’t  working, please report it to SSE Enterprise Lighting via their ‘Lights On In West Sussex’ website www.lightsoninwestsussex. co.uk or by telephoning their Customer Service Team on 0800 048 2435. You will need the column number of the faulty light and the road name. This is an excellent service and easily accessible for all residents. R

ecord breaking temperatures during June, July and August meant a record breaking number of fire calls… We attended over 100 fire calls during the three months of dry weather. It really was a busy spell for the crew, working hard in tough conditions. Well done to all involved. We all have full-time jobs, so responding to three or four calls a day massively disrupts crews’ working days. A huge thank you to Langrex, Thomas Keating and Sainsbury’s for allowing your staff to respond to fire calls. Also thank you to all the self-employed crew members who give up their time during the working day, and not forgetting all their families who don’t mind partners responding during evening and weekends. On 29th September we will be holding our charity car wash at Billingshurst fire station

from 10am-4pm. Our chosen charity, The Fire Fighters Charity relies purely on donations. This is a great opportunity for the community to come and meet your local fire fighters as well as having your car washed and supporting a fantastic charity. Those holiday snaps John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling about life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

I

’m sure, my friends, that over the years you have all been subjected to viewing other folk’s holiday snaps. Yes? Well just for good measure I now intend to inflict mine onto you. Not in pictures… I feel our lovely editor Grahame may well baulk at that… but by words. I’m at present writing this while on holiday. Where, it matters not, but it’s somewhere hot and very picturesque. The thing I love to do on holiday is to partake in the wonderfully peaceful task of people-gazing. I believe that’s the polite way of describing it, but I suspect that its really ‘people dissecting’. Go on, confess, it’s really what we all do isn’t it? “Didn’t she bother to look in the mirror before she came out in that bikini?” “There should be a law against someone that old wearing Speedos.” “Oohh! Look at that! Fancy going topless in this sun… she’s going to suffer tonight when she goes to bed.” Etc, etc. You all know what I’m on about, don’t you? So far I’ve experienced all these and more, and I have a suspicion that I myself have probably been on the other end of these observations… “Geeez… that old man over there… can see he likes a pint!” However, there is one event that I must tell you about that I witness every morning as the clock strikes 7.30a.m. and the door to the pool area is opened by a cleaning lady while still clutching a bucket and mop. It attracts a happy audience up on the balconies that overlook the area and brings forth much laughter and shaking of heads. This is the ‘Charge of the Morning Sunbeds’. The waiting queue, made up predominantly by the males of the species, line up with towels tucked under their arms, all bearing heavy eyes and producing much yawning. Right up until the moment when the doors are opened they queue and chat happily together and patiently wait for the Ceremony of the Keys to commence. But once the doors are open a tide of humanity in sun hats surges forth to grab their desired positions and smugly proclaim sovereignty by the laying of towels. Some, though, prefer to have a position that is not one of the pre-set ones. They therefore have to get their beds from the stack that sits to one side of the pool. Here they fight desperately to untangle the legs

32

of the wretched things from the stack, and then do their best to make it appear that it’s as light as a feather as they stagger over to their designated spot. Others, at this point, look anxiously up to the balconies so that they can follow the semaphore hand signals that are directed down to them as their other halves try to get them exactly into a satisfactory alignment. This can take several minutes and much muttering from the sweating carrier as she above tries to make her mind up on how many inches to the left or right is needed for perfection. Finally comes the collecting of the sun umbrellas. The main block of beds have them already installed. But our selfpositioners have to collect their own from a stack over by the main building. This is the time when those who are settled already sit contentedly on their prizes to watch the fun. Now, these brollies are fastened at their bases to a rather solid lump of heavy, circular concrete. As a result, only those who want to take the risk of a rupture attempt to carry one. So they have to be rolled. I personally think it takes around two weeks to master this task, and as such the skills shown reflect quite accurately the amount of holiday that has been used up by each contestant. I use the word ‘contestant’ because I think it accurately describes the scene being played out. As I’ve said, the art of moving these things is to roll them. You lean the brolly over, take the pole part into the crook of your arm, and carefully wheel the concrete base along. Of course, being round and part of the axle of the pole, it travels in an arc. So the unprepared can find themselves after a few yards heading straight back to where they came from, while the more experienced build up sufficient speed to have the umbrella start to unfurl. The resulting lack of vision that then occurs can often halt the whole procedure as the concrete lump then comes into contact with the contents of the participant’s flip flops. Great fun! It can take ages for some to finally manouevre the blasted thing into position, but the reward of having a satisfied wave and a thumbs up from her up above seems to keep most from collapsing from shear exhaustion. Such events can often be the highlight of the day. So, my friends, these are some of my holiday snaps. I hope you enjoyed them. I’m off to get in the queue. I’ve got my towels, book, newspaper and iPad. Now for that blasted brolly! John Nash

Book reviews

A Good Read September’s selection from book reviewer Willow Coby Shadows of the Workhouse – Jennifer Worth  There are not many people who have not seen, or at least heard of, the BBC drama Call the Midwife. However, few are aware that the first series was based on the memoirs of midwife Jennifer Worth, and the women and families she encountered in the East End of London in the 1950s. She wrote a trilogy of memoirs and the second of these is Shadows of the Workhouse. When we think of workhouses we tend to think of Dickens’ Oliver Twist. However, workhouses persisted until much later; the last ones only closed their doors in 1948. Among the communities that Worth worked in, many people were haunted by their recent memories and experiences in these institutions. There is Jane, who works with the midwives but as a child in the first decade of the 1900s grew up in a children’s workhouse as an unwanted child. Frank and Peggy, a brother and sister, were sent to the workhouse in 1908 when their parents died, their later lives forever affected by the harsh and uncaring institution they grew up in. As the workhouses fade from living memory this memoir provides a reminder of how they shaped the lives of countless men, women, and children.

Smart – Kim Slater If a king or a president is killed it is headline news and everyone tries to find out who was responsible. But as 14-year-old Kieran points out, when it is a homeless man called Colin, no one really cares. No one, that is, except Kieran and he is going to find out. When he grows up he wants to be a reporter for Sky News, and he uses his artistic skills to draw and record what he sees. Art is an escape for Kieran, and he needs an escape because secrets are all around him. The biggest secrets seem to be in his own home. Kieran has learning difficulties and is a bit of a loner. While Slater does not say directly, many readers have drawn clear comparisons to The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, and there are certainly many very well written autistic traits displayed by Kieran. This debut young adult novel will almost certainly appeal to readers of The Curious Incident. While the novel promises a detective story, it is much more than that. It is the story of a boy who is different, trying to make sense of his life and the adults around him, who largely neither understand him nor seem to care.

Little Tweeters! / About the house

That was the summer that was!

Once upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst…

N

anny was just filling the sheep water buckets when the first drops of rain fell. Lightly at first, and then with flashes of lightning and a roll of thunder. The plants looked up and smiled. She ran to the house smiling too. The rain had come and the very hot weather was broken – for a while at least. Like most people who farmed whether on big or small farms the rain was welcome. For most the last hay had been gathered and the thirsty ground drank its fill. And the grass will grow again. She would remember this summer for a number of different reasons, not just how hot it was and how refreshing the sea was. Nor for the mosquitoes which serenaded her at night, nor the dust from the new developments around the village. No it was the small things which, for her, marked this summer as unique… The shearing was accomplished Sam, ace pool without too much effort. Fortunately the shearer, Holly, had a young working dog which worked very well getting the reluctant flock into a small enclosure. And then of course Holly could grab and do the business. She saved Aaron till last and sure enough he wasn’t going to cooperate. But she managed him well. When she was finished, he felt seriously embarrassed. His head with his magnificent set of horns looked ridiculously out of place stuck at the front his body. He shook himself and trotted back to his harem The time when Grandad had to call the flock up from the fields because the field was going to be cut. With food bucket the girls came quickly. After shutting the gate he counted them – only seven. Looking around he saw Aaron lumbering up bleating loudly for his ladies. He went into the field like a lamb, glad not to be left on his own. Then the chickens. At the height of the heat she found one of the black sisters dead in the chicken house. It was crawling with insects, as were the other brown and black sisters, and the whole house. After burying the black sister she had to buy powder, catch the two other chickens, powder each one, remove bedding and powder the whole house. She felt all creepy crawly and went straight into the shower, clothes and all, to get rid of anything still enjoying life.

Yourl  a c lo ly d frienen  ov er clean

She was feeding the sheep and Aaron thought it wasn’t enough. As she walked away, a somewhat well upholstered part of her anatomy suffered a punch which made her teeth click together. She quickly turned to see Aaron head down ready for a reprise. He never made it. A big white bucket landed on his head along with a banshee scream which frightened everyone. After that she was sure to carry something to defend herself with. The watering system had been a nightmare. Meticulously set up with timers and extension hoses, everything was supposed to be watered as required but some connectors leaked or popped off. Needless to say rushing water in the middle of the night was enough to wake Anne and make her a bit cross. Because Nan was away, hoses were turned off and some areas did not get watered for several days. Lots of jobs could be done around cleaner the house because the lawns did not need to be mowed. James and his gardening crew laboured with bark stuff for the chicken pen and flowebeds, and edging and hedging. What with the tidy gardens, flowering plants and lean lawns everything looked really nice. But what rounded the summer off perfectly was that Sam learned how to clean the swimming pool! After several trial runs with Nanny lurking and giving advice he managed very well when she wasn’t there. Now she didn’t feel totally responsible for its upkeep. And talking about the pool, one afternoon Nanny decided to go for a swim. She couldn’t get in (no way was she jumping in!) so she put some caravan steps in. Thinking they would do the trick, she stepped onto them and promptly fell in – they weren’t high enough. Getting out was the next problem. She tried using the steps. Again not high enough. So she tried to heave herself out backwards which only resulted in cramp in both hamstrings at the same time! Straightening her legs as best she could, she wiggled until she was on the decking beside the pool. Thankfully Anne ordered some pool steps which are still waiting to be unboxed… Yes it was a very unique summer at that little farm near Billingshurst. Yvonne Fleece

Equine / About the house

Hay there!

F

or those of us with herbivores finding forage this winter may be more costly than before. Although we have had a perfect summer for hay making we haven’t had the best growing conditions for grass, coupled with the facts we have come through a very wet winter meaning animals were housed for longer using up forage stocks that would have lasted until the autumn, coupled with the droughtlike conditions over a large part of the UK causing grazing to become very scarce has led to farmers and horse owners using forage that has been cut this summer which we would not start using until nearly Christmas time. Even other countries are reporting shortages in some areas of the USA stocks are down by 36% So what can we do to make the forage we have got last longer and what we can use as an alternative? For many horse owners and smallholders keeping grazing animals sourcing decent forage can be one of the biggest headaches of ownership. It goes without saying to buy the best quality forage you can afford, reject anything that is mouldy, it’s simply false economy and can lead to vets’ bills for things such as respiratory infections. Look at the animals in front of you, get hands-on and body condition score them. If they are well covered and their droppings are normal in amount and texture the chances are they are finding plenty to eat even if the paddock looks bare! If you are starting to feed some hay use racks, feeders or nets to keep the hay clean and prevent it from being trampled and soiled and thus wasted. For smallholders with just a few animals or horse owners you could look at small bag haylage. Although more expensive than hay there is very little wastage; goats, sheep and alpacas love it and find it very palatable. Good clean oat straw can also be offered as an alternative for grazing animals when hay is scarce. There are many hay replacement products on the market today, from short chop chaff products to grass pellets. Fodder blocks can be very useful; they are made from pressed Timothy grass or alfalfa and they take the animal a while to eat so will stave off boredom as well as providing fibre in the diet. These

38

are available in a hanging form which is great for keeping ponies entertained! Grass pellets are a very useful source of fibre. They can be fed soaked, which is best for horses and ponies as they only have a single stomach – unlike ruminants such as sheep and cattle – and they will be less likely to choke on them too or they can be fed dry to sheep, cattle, goats and alpacas, although they can be fed in treat balls dry to horse and ponies safely. These days they are available in different grades of grass from Timothy which is lower in calories for those needing to watch their weight, to high energy ryegrass pellets ideal for horses in hard work or fattening stock ready for the butcher. They are also available in different sized pellets so you will be able to source something suitable for your stock. Dried grass is also available in a short chop form. While more expensive than pellets it makes a voluble addition to the diet and satisfies the animals need to chew. Sugar beet is a fantastic versatile feed that can be used to partially replace hay. It must be soaked before feeding to horses but ruminants can cope with it being fed dry. It is available in molasses or unmolassed form. It is very nutritious and highly palatable and makes a great addition to the diet and has an added bonus of being relatively inexpensive too. Chaffs is predominately made for horses, DO NOT FEED TO SHEEP. There is a huge choice on the market with a suitable option for all horses and ponies. These can be fed alone or mixed with soaked sugar beet, high-fibre cubes or grass nuts to add some texture to the diet and increase chewing time. Hopefully we will get a drier and shorter winter this year and Mother Nature will regain her balance – although I am not complaining about the abundance of beautiful sunshine this summer! With some preparation and forward planning I’m sure we animal owners will get through the winter ahead. Jeannette Douglas, SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.com

Year of Culture

Year of Culture 2019 grants announced

H

orsham District Year of Culture 2019 is delighted to announce the District’s successful projects which will receive grant funds to stage special events to celebrate the Year of Culture throughout 2019. The overall initial response to the call for projects was huge with over 150 expressions of interest received. The project ideas were wide and varied, but their main theme was the same; they were all representative of the entire Horsham District, a key aim at the core of the Year of Culture 2019. A panel made up of representatives from Horsham District Council, the Arts Council, Creative Assembly and West Sussex County Times debated the merits of all the projects against the criteria which had been set out from the start of the project. The end result was a wide ranging selection of 38 deserving projects that encapsulate culture in many of its forms; from ballroom dancing to sculpture, theatrical productions to cabaret, a year-long comedy competition to a film festival and so much more in between. Location wise the projects are spread far and wide, covering Ashington, Billingshurst, Henfield, Horsham, Warnham, Steyning and Pulborough and many other others. Commenting on the project announcements, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Jonathan Chowen said, “We were delighted, if not a little overwhelmed, at the high level of response and interest that we received from organisations wanting to get involved with our Year of Culture celebrations. Many thanks to all of the organisations who applied and well done to those who were successful in securing the funds they needed for their planned events. “Do remember that if you were not fortunate enough to be awarded these funds but still want to put on an event in 2019 you can still take part in our Year of Culture Fringe 2019 celebrations. We can promote your event on our website and in our two promotional programmes.” The successful grant funded organisations and their projects are: Ashington Community Centre (Celebration of Live Music), Barnstormers Comedy (Sussex Comedian of the Year Competition), Billingshurst Community Partnership (Lantern procession in Billingshurst and evening cultural event), Build an Opera (Community Music Project), Christ Hospital Museum (Frank Brangwyn cartoons), Dff Dance (Dance/ballet workshops), Enchanted Horsham (Festival in Horsham Park), Engine Shed (New adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol), Half Moon Creative Arts (Installation at Warnham Nature Reserve), HAODS (A play with community participation), Henfield Community Partnership

Full details can be found at www.hdculture2019.co.uk/ horsham-district-year-of-culture-2019-funded-projects Heather Pepper, Horsham District Council The Billingshurst Community Partnership is one of the successful groups who have been awarded funding to work with the community to have a lantern procession in Billlingshurst. Details are still in the planning stage, but local children, through the numerous clubs and local organisations, will be encouraged to get involved and make lanterns in the run up to the event that will be in the evening of BilliFest on Saturday 1st December. It is hoped that there will be music and locally cooked food on sale which will make it a truly memorable evening. If anyone is interested in getting involved in planning Billifest or the Lantern procession, or lantern making workshops please get in touch with Denise Campbell, Chair of the Billingshurst Community Partnership on 07500 450458. Little Tweeters!

Does your child have a hidden sporting talent?

F

ind out if your child has an undiscovered aptitude for a sport they might not have even tried yet at Westbourne House School, Chichester, on Saturday 29th September.  Available in separate sessions for children aged from 3-4, 5-7 and 8-11, a wide range of free activities and sports will be taking place over the school’s 100-acre campus just over a mile from Chichester city centre. This innovative ‘have-a-go’ Sports Fun Day morning offers children the opportunity to try something new or improve existing skills with the benefit of expert coaching from a highly experienced team of teachers and leaders. Younger children can choose from canoeing, ball skills, an obstacle course and dance, while the activities on offer for older children include orienteering, climbing, golf, lacrosse, hockey, cricket, football, rugby and netball. Parents can choose to watch the action, relax over a coffee, dip into a yoga session or get involved in a bit of touch rugby. The morning, which concludes with a barbecue

lunch, makes the most of the school’s facilities with activities taking place in the woods, on the lake, in the sports hall, on the astro-turf pitches and netball courts and across various pitches around the grounds. To help children make the most of the day, Westbourne House, which is a prep school for children aged two-and-a-half to thirteen (Year 8), has drafted in coaches from Cobnor Activity Centre and Goodwood Golf Academy. Headmaster Martin Barker comments: “It’s really important for us to share the sporting facilities we have here with the local community and, personally, I feel very strongly about encouraging children to find a sport they love. Children here do games every day and it definitely benefits their academic performance. I’d like to think that is borne out by the fact that pupils leaving us this year have achieved a record number of scholarships to senior school.” If you would like to register your children to take part, please visit westbournehouse. org/have-a-go.

Weald Gold Awards – another fantastic year!

O

n Thursday 19th July The Weald School hosted their annual Gold Awards ceremony to celebrate another outstanding academic year, with students, proud parents and VIPs in attendance.  The purpose of Gold Awards is to recognise those who have made great effort or progress in school, contributed to their house or excelled in extracurricular activities. Student technicians carried out a marvellous job in setting up the sound, lighting and visuals, to show the audience some great highlights of the school’s achievements over the past year. Some very talented students entertained the audience with musical pieces throughout the evening.

42

The guest speaker of the evening was Lizzie Williams, a T54 British Athlete wheelchair racer and member of the British Athletics Academy ‘Parallel Success’. She is working hard towards reaching her dream of becoming a Paralympian and representing Great Britain in Tokyo 2020. She gave an interesting and inspirational speech about achieving her goals. It was an evening that truly celebrated achievement and everyone who attended felt very proud of the students receiving their awards and The Weald community as a whole. A host of golden daffodils

G

arden centres, nurseries and catalogues are full of daffodil bulbs now. I have to exercise supreme selfrestraint every time I wander in! I think I get asked more questions about daffodils than any other plant, apart from roses. I think it’s because they are ubiquitous in the spring and so we assume they are easy to grow. They are… and they aren’t, so I’ll answer the most common questions I get asked here. I think the question I get most is, “How do I get my daffodils to flower more than one year?” It’s a good question. It’s tempting to think that the only thing you have to remember about planting daffodil bulbs is to set them pointy side up, but it’s a bit more complicated than that if you want them to flower every year. The trick is to set them deep enough. If you plant them just below the surface, as so many people do, they dry out, which means they lack the food and moisture to get them through until the following year. The result is an uninteresting clump of leaves rather than a host of golden daffodils. You can plant daffodils any time now, to the end of October. Sooner is better. The next question I get asked a lot is, “What’s the difference between daffodils and narcissi?” This is also a good question. All daffodils are narcissi, but not all narcissi are daffodils!

‘Daffodils’ is the name we give to narcissi with large trumpets. The third question I’m often asked is, “How far apart should I plant the bulbs?” They should be planted about 3 inches / 8cm apart in holes about 10 inches / 25cm deep. It looks deep when you are dropping them in but it’s worth the effort if you want repeat flowering. Choose the biggest, firmest bulbs you can find for each variety. The final question I get asked is, “When can I cut down the foliage after flowering?” I would suggest waiting for six weeks. If you have a very small garden and can’t bear to have untidy foliage lying around you might be better treating the bulbs as annuals (daffodil bulbs aren’t generally expensive.). Or you can plant them in an aquatic basket; after flowering you can dig the basket up, water the bulbs regularly then replant in the autumn. Alternatively, you can buy dwarf varieties of daffodil which have daintier flowers and foliage, so you can have pretty flowers without the resulting foliage posing a problem. Whatever you decide, remember plant deeper than you think and… Happy gardening! Rachel Leverton

Ringers remember…

N

ovember 2018 will mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. 1,400 bell ringers died during the conflict. You can honour their memory 100 years after the end of the war by becoming one of 1,400 new bell ringers and joining others across the nation in ringing for the centenary of the Armistice. Just after the war ended the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers (CCCBR) wrote to all ringing associations to compile the Rolls of Honour. At that time 1,077 men were reported as lost. During the First World War Centenary the CCCBR reviewed this list and has discovered a further 323 bell ringers who died in service bringing the total to 1,400. Bell ringing is a British tradition and the British Isles are home to a distinctive style of bell ringing called change ringing which produces a peal of bells, part of the national ‘soundscape’. Outside the British Isles change ringing towers are few and far between. While the British Isles has some 5,500 such towers, the rest of the world has fewer than 150. Bell ringing is woven into the fabric of our society marking rites of passage in our lives including

New guide shows canal  history in the making The restoration story of the Wey & Arun Canal has been brought bang up to date in a new publication.  A Guide to Restoration Progress on the Wey & Arun Canal provides a fascinating insight into the restoration work of the canal from the 1970s to the present day, and is sure to appeal to anyone interested in the canal and those who wish to know more about it. This fully revised full-colour edition charts the progress of the canal’s restoration in West Sussex and Surrey, including the very latest projects. The A4 56-page booklet features 10 maps of the canal and extensive details of the restoration work, along with both archive and more recent photographs. The guide was last updated in 2014 and this new edition for 2018 includes recent projects such as the completed Compasses Bridge. It demonstrates the huge amount of restoration work the Wey & Arun Canal Trust has achieved over the 23-mile canal. The 2018 guide, edited by Julian Cheek and Geoff Thomas, costs just £6 and is available online at www.weyarun.org.uk/shop, or from the Loxwood Canal Centre (RH14 0RD, next to the Onslow Arms), Tel: (01403) 753999, open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm).

christenings, weddings and funerals. It often marks important local and national celebrations – recently this included the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics and Paralympics. Bell ringers have regular competitions and often come together to ring just for the joy of it. Although bell towers are found in churches you don’t have to be a church-goer to be a bell ringer. Bell ringers are a friendly inclusive community with people of all faiths and none. Be part of this unique nationwide project to honour the 1,400 bell ringers lost during the First World War. Our Community Volunteers – Nicky Greenfield

T

he highly successful Dementia Café at Billingshurst Trinity United Reformed Church was started by Nicky Greenfield in January 2017 and immediately welcomed about thirty people through its doors. Each month people who are carers, or who suffer from dementia, or those who simply want to have a chat and a cup of tea or lend a hand, gather in the church hall. There is old-fashioned music and sometimes spontaneous dancing but above all, people have a chance to chat and laugh and enjoy themselves with other members of their community. Nicky was inspired to set up the café as her grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s ten years earlier, and at the time there was nowhere in the village which catered specifically for families taking out a relative with dementia. People now come from Billingshurst and the surrounding area and there is obviously a local need for this type of safe, non-judgemental space. Nicky, who is also a mother of three young children and works part-time as a midwife, explains that the church is now dementia-friendly, and is part of the Horsham Dementia Action Alliance, with a team of ten people who work to ensure that any

congregation members with dementia are able to have an enjoyable experience of church with their families. The establishment of the café was a key part of this initiative, and as Nicky brings her children to the café, others have started to bring theirs – the children play and the adults can talk. In fact the whole family is involved: Nicky’s husband also helps out at the café and even their dog is being trained to go into nursing homes as a ‘pat dog’ – a gentle pet that the residents can enjoy meeting. There are often special events at the café, including a cream tea in the summer, a visit from Father Christmas in December and recently a trip to Billingshurst Fire Station where the firefighters gave a demonstration and allowed everyone to try out the hoses! At this year’s Billingshurst Show the church provided a dementia-friendly space with chairs and books for those preferring to escape the bustle of the event. The best part? Nicky replies with enthusiasm: “Seeing families enjoying spending time together and creating happy memories.” Pippa Cleeve If you know someone who you feel deserves recognition in Our Community Volunteers please email Pippa: pppclv@spektrum.demon.co.uk
