orry Fernwood, but your secret is out: BC’s best urban street party has hit the big time! “Many of Victoria’s 13 neighbourhoods hold an annual summer festival, but none can hold a candle to the shaker known as FernFest,” said the Vic News in feature article on Fernwood in January of this year. With publicity like that, you’ll have to get there early this year. After all, there’s only so much room in the square! Friday evening, the festivities kick off at 5:00pm with music, a BBQ and “refreshments.” At 6:00pm, we have the hair show from Who Dyd Your Hair, followed by music till we close at 10:00pm. There will be dancing in the square so come prepared to cut loose. Saturday, FernFest really heats up with 13 hours of awesomeness for all ages. The day begins with the pancake breakfast (by donation) at 9:00am in front of the Fernwood Inn. That is followed by the Kidical Mass Bike Parade (with police escort), and kid’s activities including music, facepainting, bubbles, games, a bouncy

castle and more. All day long, there will be an Artisan Market on Gladstone Ave. featuring 40 vendors with everything from local artists, hula hoops, massages, and even a tarot card reader. And as if all that isn’t enough, throughout the day on Saturday, the Victoria Heritage Foundation is offering free Heritage Walking Tours through Fernwood starting at 11:00am and 1:00pm. And of course, the Fernwood Art Stroll is happening from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Saturday evening, there will be more live music, BBQ (featuring pulled pork sandwiches, Szasz Sausages, as well as veggie dogs and kids hotdogs), and refreshments. Family Biking: Why We Ride ›› Olena Russell Family biking has helped focus our lives over the past several years. We are striving to create more meaningful connections with each other, our community, and the environment. We found the perfect medium for this in our family biking. Biking with our children creates an opportunity to have interesting conversations and create lasting memories. The children love biking with us, and through the conversations we have, attachment grows and connections are made. As we ride, we chat with the people we meet. We are often stopped by passersby to talk about family biking. While we ride, we see the community around us up close. We stop and shop at local stores, visit markets, and see things from a different perspective. Biking allows us to interact and engage with our community on a personal level. Of course, biking is friendly for our planet. We choose this means of transportation to decrease our footprint. The children learn that we do not need to consume and pollute to get from place to place, and they learn about our environment as we

Artisanal food with flavour & all that jazz—just like Szasz ›› Lilian Sue For George Szasz, chef and owner of Fernwood’s popular Stage Small Plates Wine Bar, his lifelong love affair with food might very well be ingrained in his DNA. A third generation Hungarian Canadian, George’s grandfather operated a salami factory in Hungary before the Second

Increasing food prices, fuel surcharges as well as rising transportation and rent costs over the years encouraged George to think outside the box to continue to offer quality food. Thus, Szasz Sausage & Fine Foods was born. Focusing on the future and simplifying business with a smaller operation, all of George’s six different artisanal sausages

World War. His parents owned Szasz, a Vancouver-based restaurant and deli on South Granville for thirty-five years. George grew up in the family business and moved to Smithers in the 1990’s, where he owned and operated a restaurant called Little Onion. Following the economic downturn, George moved to Victoria. With a desire to keep food simple and exciting with small plates and a dynamic menu, Stage Wine Bar was born in 2007. www.fernwoodnrg.ca

are made by the man himself. With three types of chicken and three types of pork sausage, George sources local ingredients as much as possible. His use of Cowichan Valley chicken, Port Alberni pork as well as herbs from his own garden and exotic spices from local stores reflects his desire keep the sausage as natural as possible. No preservatives or nitrates are added. George expanded his line of products to include marinated olives and preserved

lemons (which he loves for both its versatile use and natural flavour). The Market on Yates, Spud.ca, Aubergine, many local delis and Clayoquot Lodge carry his lemon and olive products and his sausages. His duck confit is available under the Stage banner at Slater’s. George’s recent trip to El Salvador is another indication of his desire for simple, rustic tastes and a return to the roots of fresh cooking. For three weeks, George stayed outside the capital of San Salvador surrounded by mango, mangosteen and banana fruit trees. He had the opportunity to fully prepare a cross-hybrid lamb/goat animal from slaughter to roasting for a local fiesta. Giving locals who had never before tried such a delicacy was the greatest thrill of his entire trip. This confirmed for him that having family to share good quality fresh food with is one of the most important things in life. Looking forward into the future for Szasz Sausage & Fine Foods, George is contemplating expansion into the Lower Mainland; Urban Fare is a possibility. and he is considering holding more classes on making sausages at the London Chef. Creating artisan quality food and sharing that food with family and customers alike is why George continues to enjoy the restaurant industry even after thirty years. Whatever the future holds for Szasz Sausage & Fine Foods, George’s dedication and love for food ensures that it will be bright. Taste George’s sausages at the FernFest BBQ. Growing Succulents

Fernwood Art Stroll

›› Margaret Hantiuk Succulents are a kind of plant that stores water in their juicy tissues in order to survive drought. Most of these plants are very easy to grow, as long as you provide the right conditions and pick the varieties that suit your purposes. Most are truly drought tolerant. (These are not the tropical succulents that do require moist conditions). Kids can grow them if those with spines (a few) and slightly toxic sap (some Agave and Euphorbia) are avoided. If you go away for awhile, they are fine. Deer don’t like them. These plants need little watering, minimal fertilizing, and very little pruning, trimming and repotting. They are not deep rooted and do best in shallow, wide pots, as they tend to ‘colonize’. All are very interesting plants with strong geometry and can be stunning in pots that complement their textures and patterns. They look wonderful outside in pots on decks and patios, in rock gardens or tucked into pavers, rock walls, along concrete, or stone walks. Inside, they do best on south facing windowsills. Requirements for all of them (inside and outside) are good drainage, good air circulation and good light. They should be potted in containers with drain holes, in soil that is 1/3 sharp sand, pumice or perlite. Mix this into soil when planting in the garden as well.

Some are tender and must be grown indoors or in covered porches or greenhouses. They are reliable houseplants that rarely suffer from pests. Depending on where they originated, they will have dormant, dry seasons and active seasons where they will need a little watering. Do not allow them to become bone dry in their dormant season, and in their active season watering must be restrained: most are lost to over watering. Succulents can be grown indoors in all kinds of cute containers without drain holes if there is a layer of pea gravel in the bottom half, then the soil/perlite mix. Usually the top inch in all containers (and in the garden as mulch under these plants) is a layer of fine gravel that keeps the succulent leaves off the soil. Outdoor pots must be placed up on feet, racks or over gravel to allow for good drainage. Most hardy ones that can tolerate frost (some varieties even tolerate temps below freezing) should be kept out of our winter rains. I move my pots to my back porch and steps under the eaves. South facing windows in an unheated or cool garage, basement, shed, or porch are good, too. Tender varieties can be placed outdoors in May and brought in to escape frost in October, adding an exotic element to your deck and patios. There are many interesting, fun ones to choose from.

Village Life III, acrylic on paper, 2008. Painting by CarrolAnn Smedley, one of the Fernwood Art Stroll’s many talented, local artists.

›› Esther Callo The Fernwood Art Stroll was founded in 2008 by artist Deryk Houston. In his Village Vibe article about their first event, Deryk said, ‘The beautiful thing was that it brought together many artists who never knew they lived just around the corner from each other. New friendships developed and ideas and knowledge were generously shared, soon developing an excitement about the talent in our own community.’ This year we are building on that original excitement and incorporating more social media into our event. We have a brand new Facebook page and a website with GoBC.com. Now you can go online and check out what’s happening as our two-day event approaches. See the pics. Read the bios. Get inspired by art in your community. We have a wide range of artistic expression in Fernwood: woodworking, painting, mosaics, photography, pottery,

flower arranging and sculpture. The list goes on. The Fernwood Art Stroll is an opportunity for artists to collaborate and contribute to the well-being of our vibrant community; a community nurtured by art and artistic expression where all may inspire and be inspired by the process of creative work. As our world faces the challenge to move away from material goods to satisfy our hungry souls, we can look to art and the spirit of community to keep us satisfied. The Fernwood Art Stroll is the perfect place to start. See you there! The Fernwood Art Stroll is celebrating its 5th annual event on June 23rd and 24th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., coinciding with Fernfest. Artists open their private studios to share, show and sell their original works of art. Come and join us! You’ll find the map of our event in brochures at various locations. Fernwood’s glorious history

Summer fun isn’t far Believe your eyes! Yes, this is a summer program for 3 to 5 year olds in your neighbourhood!

›› Denyse Koo Nearly every parent will tell you that one phrase they hate to hear from their child is, “I’m bored!” Even though, as adults, we would love to just sit and chill sometimes, kids need to keep busy and are constant learners. Why not combine learning and fun throughout the summer?

Fernwood Manor, built 1861, after which the community was named. Photo courtesy of Hallmark Heritage Society.

As Fernwood celebrates FernFest, and as Victoria celebrates being 150 years old, it’s a good time to review what makes this community so special. And it all goes back to the last Ice Age....

›› Nick Russell When the gigantic icepack slowly withdrew from Vancouver Island, some 10,000 years ago, it left behind on the southern tip a great mound of sand and gravel. Over the ensuing millennia, as the climate improved, topsoil accumulated, springs and streams burbled up from the gravel, and ferns and woods took root, followed by a multitude of wildlife. First Nations hunters found an abundance of game here, within easy reach of their villages at Cadboro Bay and elsewhere. So when the first Europeans arrived in 1842 to build a Hudson Bay Co. trading post, the verdant slopes of what we now call Fernwood must have immediately attracted them for its wood, its game and its sparkling springs. As early as 1852, the colony’s pioneer surveyor, Joseph Pemberton, noted the ridge was a perfect building site with sea views and prolific springs. Victorians gladly paid watermen to fill their barrels up on the hill, and deliver sweet water to the homes springing up around the fort. Woodsmen and hunters followed the First Nations’ trail from the Inner Harbour to the east side of the island, and called it Fort Street. Two of Pemberton’s acquaintances acquired land up on the hill. His assistant, Benjamin W. Pearse, bought 95 acres, east www.fernwoodnrg.ca

of what is now Fernwood Road, and built an imposing stone farmhouse that he called “Fernwood Manor,” giving the community its name. The two-storey stone structure stood at Fort and Fern from 1861 to 1969. HBC Chief Trader Roderick Finlayson also bought a huge tract that stretched from Chambers Street to Rock Bay. (His home, “Rock Bay Farm,” was in the block of Bay/Douglas/Queens/Government.) Meanwhile, the governor reserved the ridge—Spring Ridge—for its water, gravel and sand. Eventually, the springs, particularly those around Spring Road, were piped directly down to the town, and then became obsolete after Elk Lake water was piped in. Gradually, the great farms were subdivided, with three important early stages: In the 1880s, builders erected a number of simple homes roughly in the Spring-Denman-Sayward-Pembroke area. Fortunately, many have survived. A chunk of the old Fernwood Manor estate was subdivided in the 1890s, giving us a cluster of slightly more ornate homes in the neighbourhood of Vining and Stanley Streets. Then a further piece was split off along the desirable Belmont ridge, attracting wealthier home owners wanting the latest building style (Arts & Crafts). Meanwhile, a streetcar service had been built from Downtown, ending at Fernwood and Gladstone, followed by the high school, churches, and a cluster of shops. After that, many of the gaps were filled in the building boom of 1905-1912. And the rest is history. For more information, join the FernFest Heritage Walking Tours on Saturday, June 23rd at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., or use a self-guided tour produced by the Victoria Heritage Foundation, and read This Old House, vol.2, Fernwood & VicWest.
