Fern Fest 2017 The scoop on Fernwood’s 22nd annual celebration of arts, music and community

une is here. That means it’s time to kick off the summer with BC’s best urban block party, FernFest! Fernwood NRG is pleased to bring you the 22nd Annual FernFest, Fernwood’s neighbourhood celebration.

Everyone is invited to join the free, family friendly fun happening on Friday, June 16th 5-10pm and Saturday, June 17th 9am-10pm.

Come down to Fernwood Square and Vic High, bring your family, neighbours and friends. Costumes are encouraged!

Friday evening will kick off FernFest with live music all evening that is guaranteed to get you dancing including Compassion Gorilla and Electric Sex Panther. We are delighted to have Benji Duke MCing the weekend—fair warning to sharpen your paper airplane skills. In Fernwood Square, our BBQ will be grilling up delicious eats and our refreshments trailer will be serving up ice cold, fresh-from-the-tap Phillips Beer and Merridale Cider.

Saturday is jam-packed with activity from sun up to sun down. Catch the 15+ performances by unbelievably talented local musicians including crowd-favorites Bučan Bučan, Bousada, Funk Cannon and more! Tyler and Marcell bring a combined 25 years on the tools to Forrest Renovations.

Tyler is an independent contractor and renovations specialist with previous

experience in woodworking and construction. Marcell joined the team last August and brings years of experience in construction and project management, with turn-of-the-century homes being among her favourite. Together they are excited to serve Fernwood. Their ultimate goal is to assemble a cooperative for the community that would provide classes, tool sharing, and a workshop space for all its members.

Wanna get involved in community? ›› Kathryn Juricic I have always enjoyed volunteering, it makes me feel purposeful and part of something larger. Little did I know that it would help me get a job and connect me with some of my best friends. I started at Fernwood Neighbourhood Resource Group as a volunteer for FernFest five years ago, accepting Artisan Market Applications, and now I am a full-time staff member. More importantly, I have found my community.

Our aim is for FernFest to be a neighbourhood-music-and-arts-family-friendly festival. Basically we want to be inclusive as possible, celebrating everything we have to offer—which turns out to be a lot!

We continue to organize this event because it brings our neighbourhood together, we get to hire local (super talented) musicians, offer space to creators, it gives a chance for the businesses in the neighbourhood to be visited by people who might have not otherwise strolled through, we have activities for children and bring interactive art to the neighbourhood. We believe that all of these things combined create a supportive environment for our neighbours

to not only meet each other but interact with our organization and the greater purpose we serve in the community. Plus it’s fun.

That being said, FernFest could not happen without the time and energy of our volunteers, who not only keep the wheels turning but are a part integral to this community we are building. Thank you to the volunteers who have made this

Indebted to the soulful sounds of 60s and 70s Jamaican roots reggae and rocksteady, Phonosonics are keeping the island vibes alive in a modern context. Fresh off their Rude Stax 7”, which covered “Green Onions” and “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay)”; and their single Between Two Headphones/Dark-Haired Lady reaching #3 on !earshot’s world music charts, Phonosonics will have no shortage of material to choose from. “I feel that FernFest has maintained the charm of a truly grassroots festival. Every musical event has its own charm, but gatherings like FernFest have a uniquely exciting, but intimate feel,” says Spencer Cleave, multiinstrumentalist for Phonosonics. So join in and groove Fernwood style.

Stel, the brother-sister outfit of Adam and Sophia Stel play a blend of cerebral west coast folk and pop with splashes of melancholia. With strong songwriting and musicianship, the group’s sound reflects wisdom beyond their years. Fresh off another stint in the studio, fans of the duo’s debut EP Think Aloud will have some new material to look forward to. “We recently finished recording a couple of songs, and are excited share them with everyone! We’ll be playing them live at FernFest, so we hope you can make it out,” says Adam Stel. Fans of young local talent should be pleasantly surprised on Friday night in the Square.

The suave trio of Tan and Hide consists of Jake Winter (lead vocals/guitar), Kevin Parks (drums) and newly acquired bassist Kirk Borger. Blending west coast sensibilities with a solid blues-rock foundation, with elements of folk and canadiana mixed in, Tan and Hide are sure to get the bodies moving Saturday night in the square. “We Love being at FernFest every year, enjoying the music and good Victoria folks. We’re really looking forward to being a part of it this year. It’s such a great vibe and we really want to get everyone moving and shaking out in that beautiful courtyard,” says Winter; so be prepared to dance.

Victoria’s five-piece psychedelic pop ensemble Cartoon Lizard has had a busy year; garnering attention from Exclaim! for their single “All in the Cards” and releasing a debut EP Not Punk Not Raw. FernFest patrons should expect an air of lightheartedness in the group’s tight baroque-tinged psychedelia, splattered with a healthy dose of lyrical introspection. The band’s roots can be traced to Fernwood.

“The first show we ever played was at an open mic night at the Fernwood Inn,” says Trevor Lang, the band’s producer. “We’ve been frequenting FernFest for years and it feels so good to finally be a part of it.”

Vic Horvath is a musically shapeshifting singer songwriter, based in Fernwood, Victoria. Horvath’s combination of roots and folk music is dark, warm and magical.

The Lekwungen Dancers of the Songhees Nation were founded over 40 years ago by late Jim Dick, carried on by wife Dell and daughters Lyla and Beth Dick.

Maxim Cossette delights you with his fun and engaging glimpses of life on banjo and slide guitar.

Doug Koyama performs Improvised A Capella with a loop pedal which allows the layering of sounds, vocal percussion, and melodic and harmonic phrases.

The Tree Top Trio derives their musical style after the fashion of nomadic eastern European guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt who pioneered Gypsy Jazz and Swing Manouche.

Phonosonics is a Roots Reggae outfit from Victoria, BC. This powerhouse group features soulful owerh harmonies and electrifying danceability in a reverent update of this his vintage style.

Cartoon Lizard is a 5-piece psychedelic pop outfit. Each memberr is a multi-instrumentalist/ songwriter/producer. ›› Phoenix Bain Returning for the 7th season in the heart of Oaklands, the Oaklands Sunset Market begins on June 28th for ten weeks at the Oaklands Community Centre.

Creating a community gathering space since its modest beginnings in 2011, the Market has solidified itself as a Wednesday evening staple providing the neighbourhood with access to local farmers, food producers, and artisans. The Market is back in the regular swing of a gathering space, food hub, and summer venue in Victoria with a full schedule of local talent on the stage, a selection of over 50 vendors, community activities, and a bi-weekly beverage garden. At the heart of the Market, and what inspires me to come

to work every day, is the opportunity to be a part of something that has grown past just a storefront space to access local food, but a space that celebrates local food and arts, cultivating local economic development, and facilitating community connections.

Those words come off as a boilerplate at the bottom of a media release, but it is true. It’s a magical space almost outside of an episode of “Cheers,” where everybody knows your name, and the name of the farmer with the best kale.

Alongside institutions like Moss St. Market and new friends like Esquimalt Farmers’ Market, the farmers’ market scene is Victoria is vibrant and healthy, ready to be your grocery stop and hang out spot almost every day of the week.

›› Margaret Hantiuk Please join us on Saturday, June 10th and Sunday, June 11th from 11am to 4pm for the 10th Annual Fernwood Art Stroll. This year there are 15 artist studios to visit, including the several artists in the Pandora Arts Collective, at the Little Fernwood Gallery artspace.

The Fernwood Art Stroll is an unjuried collection of artists and artisans who work together to put on this event, to open our studios to the public. You can download the map from our website and plan your way through the neighbourhood. Our brochures will be available around town too.

This year we have baskets, paper mache bowls, photographs, art cards, blown glass, pillows, prints, watercolours, drawings, cement garden pieces, oil and acrylic paintings, and multimedia works for you to discover. The painters range from abstractionists to landscape painters; then there are florals and some are whimsical and evocative.

Look for the directional signs at street corners and the balloons and lawn signs at each studio. Invite your family and friends along and make a day of it. There are many wonderful coffee shops, and great eateries in Fernwood. This is a great way to explore your neighbourhood and the works of the many artists who live here.

Gardening season is here! And so are all the things that eat your garden! Here we discuss The Big 3: aphids, slugs and cutworms.

Aphids There are green, brown, black and dusty grey aphids, all active at various times of the growing season (lucky us!). They produce a sticky honeydew that ants enjoy farming. If you think you have an ant problem, look closer to see if it’s actually an aphid problem.

Prevention: Don’t over-fertilize with nitrogen, this causes plants to grow excess tender material which aphids love.

Make sure plants are hydrated - aphids are attracted to plants that are droughtstressed.

Treatment: Spray the aphids off with a high pressure stream of water. Repeat this every day for at least three days, more often for a bad outbreak. It’s non-toxic, easy to do and effective.

Slugs/snails Slime trails. Large, ragged holes in leaves.

Entire seedlings gone and just a sad little stem tip left behind. Ah, the signs of a nocturnal gastropod feeding.

Prevention: Rotate your crops to prevent a predictable food source. Provide habitat for gastropod predators like toads, lizards,

and snakes by edging your beds with rocks or building a toad abode in your garden.

Wasps and hornets are other natural predators.

Treatment: Choose your own adventure until one works for you. Put a log in your garden bed, turn it over early in the morning and you should find some specimens to squish. Set up beer traps. Crush eggshells and scatter around plants. Grab a headlamp and go on a hunting mission at night with scissors (just kidding…kind of ).

Cutworm You take a look at your seedlings one morning and they’ve been chopped off!

This is the work of a cutworm, so named because it cuts plants off at soil level.

Prevention: Lightly turn your soil in early spring to expose them to birds and other grubbing animals. They are usually just under the soil surface and curl up when exposed, making them easy to spot and pick out by hand as well. Plant seedlings with cardboard collars sunk at least 2 inches into the soil.

Treatment: In the morning, inspect around the base of the damaged plant to find the worm to squish.

Fun Fact: Cutworm pupae look like dark brown, shiny seed husks in the soil, remove if you come across them.

Larsen Music began out of John Larsen’s Saanich home nearly 20 years ago. There was, at the time, a huge shortage of available rental instruments for band students on Vancouver Island. John just couldn’t stand the idea of kids wanting to play music not having access to instruments to play. So he cashed in his savings to buy a bunch of saxes and flutes, and started renting them out!

John is now looking forward to retirement knowing he has had a positive impact on the community.

Larsen Music has been a fixture on Cook Street for the better part of those 20 years and has been a hub of the Victoria music community. It has always been John’s intent to have a neighborhood feeling; customers are meant to feel that they have entered the home of a friend when walking in the door.

John and Larsen Music have donated time, resources and financial support to countless school fundraisers, community associations and music events. John was a key player in saving Victoria public school music programs in 2004 when they were under serious threat—you can still see the

occasional ‘Please Note – Schools Need Music!’ bumper sticker around town.

A donation of 90 string instruments to the Greater Victoria School Board was made in 2008 to secure the future of the then-suffering string program.

John’s sincere hope is that a driven and community-minded person or team of people buy the business and carry on his work. The need for a music store that cares about and for the people of Vancouver Island is great. John’s retirement would be that much sweeter if his legacy lived on.
