Fern Fest 2018 Community spirit beams from Fernwood Square

›› Kathryn Juricic

O

ur neighbourhood celebration has grown—but remains a gathering of friends. Every year amazing local musicians and performers grace the gazebo and this year is no different. FernFest is free and for all ages, so alongside these musical wonders, The Field of Dreams, Artisan Market, Non-Profit Hub, Kid’s Stage and Senior’s High Tea add the ingredients that make FernFest a lively music, arts, and community festival—right in our neighbourhood! A lot going on? Yes. Here’s a quick run through of the two-day fest: friends, magic, music, bubbles, hugs, Fernwood. On Friday, June 22nd from 5:00pm to 10:00pm you’ll find musicians performing under the gazebo, the FernFest BBQ, Phillips Beer & Merridale Cider, and the Vinyl Envy hosted Merch Table in Fernwood Square. Saturday, June 23rd is a morning to evening affair when things get pretty wild, in the most beautiful PG kind of way. We’re hosting a Community Bagel Breakfast in Fernwood Square at 9:00am. After that, bring the kids over to the Field of Dreams (aka the Vic High Field) for the Kidical Mass Bike Parade (decorations at 10:00am & ride at 11:00am). The parade brings you back to the fun, all happening in Fernwood Square and the Field of Dreams. The Field of Dreams runs from 11:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday and is genuinely a magical place for the kiddos. Continued on page 2...

Bring your nieces and nephews, grandchildren, siblings, kids. With a children’s stage, face-painting, a custom painted and locally foraged cardboard castle, balloon twisting, Kidical Mass Bike Parade, circus performances, and community art projects— along with bubbles big and small floating above! One parent shared what they love about the Field of Dreams, “The sense of safe, fun, all-ages community activities, and absence of low-quality junk.” Right on, couldn’t have put that better myself. And while the kids are running wild, you can peruse the Artisan Market (Read more about that on Page 6), be treated at the Heart and Hands Community Acupuncture tent, have meaningful conversations at the Non-Profit Hub, or take in some lovely tunes at the all-female fronted, singer-songwriter Market Stage. See what all the fuss is about and enjoy a tasty bevvy in the sunshine (or not) in Fernwood Square for the awesome lineup of bands playing under the gazebo.

FernFest is for everyone. We take inclusivity to heart, as FernFest is one of the ways that Fernwood NRG and the Fernwood Community Centre interacts with our larger community while embodying our organization’s principles and values. FernFest will also always be free. Reflecting on last year, one performer

shared, “Everyone I encountered treated me with respect and kindness.” And a long-time FernFest-er said their favourite part is, “the overwhelming community vibe.” Phew, mission accomplished. You’ll find all different types of performances and performers at FernFest and that isn’t by accident. We’re dedicated to creating a neighbourhood that is vibrant, beautiful, healthy, and alive, and that includes you! Please join us for this celebration, after all, it takes a community! What’s your favourite part? Happy FernFest! For FernFest bands and links to their music, please visit: fernwoodnrg.ca/ events-directory/fernfest/performers

Musicians of FernFest Friendly Giant rooted ›› in Fernwood Ross Currie

›› Kathryn Juricic Haley Blais

Grapefruit Is Impossible

Fuelled by that collaborative spirit found in Victoria’s funk, soul and groove scenes; the local six-piece Grapefruit Is Impossible combine a jazzy zest with healthy squeezes of hip hop infusing their fresh sound. “The general vibe is just high-energy fun… we like to create an energy of anything creative is okay, as long as it’s not offensive,” says MC Alexa Verstraten. Fun and lighthearted are certainly keywords in describing the Grapefruit Is Impossible sound, but the band definitely has the musical chops to give it that tight live sound. With that being said, it’s safe to say Grapefruit Is Impossible are sure to provide that tang for you to shake your thang!

Vancouver indie-pop singer/songwriter Haley Blais just dropped her latest EP Let Yourself Go this past April, which resulted in a cross Canada tour in support of the release. “It’s my first full band backed EP. I wrote it and recorded it all in Victoria,” says Blais. The Victoria connection on Let Yourself Go is strong, with writing and recording coming courtesy of FernFest alumni Trevor Lang and Brennan Doyle of Cartoon Lizard. Blais says the shift to having a full band was inevitable, which has made for “more of an elaborate production. All my stuff prior had been home recordings… And now everything’s upgraded,” she adds, which has spilled over into songwriting and performing. Don’t miss this talented up-and-coming performer at her FernFest debut.

The Victoria Cuban All-Stars The Brass

The Brass is a community-based, nonauditioned brass ensemble founded three years back by bandleader Julia Knight. It’s a “huge mix of people, all adults. Everyone from professional musicians to people who haven’t touched their horns since High School band,” says Knight; who handles the arrangements, which run the gamut of pop, indie rock, hip-hop, electronic, and beyond. “I wrote some pretty tough arrangements for the crew this summer… And as usual they’re blowing my mind,” says Knight. This new music may, or may not include a brass rendition of a certain Australian psych-rock band, or a mash-up of everyone’s favourite Britney Spears tune! “Come dance at FernFest,” says Knight, who hopes to pack in as many horns as possible into Fernwood Square.

www.fernwoodnrg.ca

The Victoria Cuban All-Stars, the local 5-piece led by trumpeter Miguelito Valdes, are sure to bring a high caliber of Cuban and Latin American music to Fernwood Square. Their name is an homage to the Afro CubanAll Stars, formed by tres/guitarist Juan De Marcos González of Buena Vista Social Club. Valdes toured with the Afro Cuban All Stars from 2009-2012, performing alongside legends of Cuban music. Having performed Cuban music all his life, Valdes is amazed “how much people love that kind of music.” Which speaks to an inherent quality in the music, which appeals to such a wide range of people globally. “It’s the energy that the music brings to the people; that makes them dance. It’s the rhythm,” says Valdes. The rhythm and energy will definitely be on hand to close out night one of FernFest!

Friendly Giant is a Fernwood-owned business. For seven and a half years the husband and wife duo, Chelsea and Shawn Vinesen, were operating out of their home on Fernwood Road (you might recall seeing a few trucks here and there). The business recently moved into and renovated the old Askim’s Beer & Wine Emporium on Haultain Street—yes, next to Haultain Fish & Chips. They told me the humble beginnings of Friendly Giant, which now offers moss removal, window and gutter cleaning, and power washing on high rise, residential and commercial properties. It all started when Chelsea and Shawn borrowed $1,000 from Shawn’s dad to purchase an old Econoline van. Their business has nearly doubled every year since then through word-ofmouth and repeat customers and is now thirteen employees strong! It’s not just their friendly demeanor that they lead with; they’re great at what they do. In February this year, the Friendly Giant team travelled to Kissimmee, Florida to compete in the International Window Cleaners Association Speed Cleaning Competition. Shawn finished 7th after cleaning three large windows in 19 seconds (the World Record is 9 seconds)! Friendly Giant is a success due to their team, attention to detail, hard work, and care for others.

That’s definitely the vibe when working with these two who have sponsored FernFest for many years. (Friendly Giant also supports the neighbourhood through the Vining Street Party on the Plaza and Theatre Inconnu.) So why did they choose to support their local neighbourhood festival? Chelsea has been in Fernwood since going to high school at Vic High, “Fernwood means so much to me. We just love the community. FernFest is the embodiment of Fernwood, it brings everyone together in such a beautiful way.” Shawn chimed in, “How could you not want to support something that brings all your friends together?” Chelsea and Shawn are certainly a power couple. They complement each other and function as a great team. She takes on most of the accounting, communications, and advertising, while he is in charge of overseeing the technicians and daily activities. On working as a team, Chelsea noted, “I wouldn’t have it any other way. We live together, work together, travel together.” Shawn smiled, “We’ve pretty much been inseparable for twelve or thirteen years but only together for eight.” Chelsea finished that thought, “We were best friends first.” You can find Friendly Giant online at friendlygiant.com or by phone at 250884-4596.

3 Days of Great Performances, 2 New Locations, and a World Premiere!

›› Misha Handman Kaleidoscope Theatre for Young People is proud to announce our upcoming Family Theatre Festival, taking place on June 9th and 10th at the Belfry Theatre, and June 16th in Langford. For our sixth year, Kaleidoscope is delighted to be expanding our festival, reaching out to new communities and areas. In Victoria, we have partnered with the Belfry Theatre to bring four productions to life over the weekend of June 9th and 10th, running from 11:00am to 5:00pm. Kaleidoscope will be premiering “When the Sun Crosses the Line”. Touching, loving and historical, this new work by Kaleidoscope Theatre’s artistic director, Roderick Glanville, does not shy away from some tough questions. “I feel it’s important for us to understand the complex issues of what reconciliation really means to those that may be afraid to ask,” Roderick explains. “Knowing our

history changes our future. In our play, June, a thirteen year old girl, asks those though questions that are often the ‘Elephant in the Room’.” Kaleidoscope will also be joined by four of our wonderful partners: Story Theatre, with their production of “Off the Shelf ”, Star Star Theatre, with their production of “Raccoonaissance”, and Bonnie Duncan, with her work, “Squirrel Stole My Underpants!” There will be activities in Fernwood Square, food trucks, and free performances by Cam & Daisy. On June 16th, thanks to the support of presenting sponsor the West Shore Arts Council, Kaleidoscope will be bringing the Family Theatre Festival to the West Shore for the first time! This one-day extension to the festival will be taking place at the Belmont Secondary School Theatre, running from 11:00am to 3:30pm. We will be joined by Story Theatre and long-time Kaleidoscope partner Paul Kilshaw, as well as our old friends Cam & Daisy. Tickets for each show at the Family Theatre Festival are $15 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets to our Belfry productions can be purchased through the Belfry Theatre’s ticket site, and tickets to the West Shore productions can be purchased through the Kaleidoscope website.

Lohbrunner Community Farm, one of the few remaining farms in Langford, B.C., exists because Norma Lohbrunner wanted the 13 acre property to be farmed in perpetuity, and in a visionary move donated her land to TLC in a trust known as a Life Estate in the early 2000’s. This allowed her to live out her days on the farm in her home, and kept the farm and it’s rich flood plain soils from falling prey to the same fate— urban development—that plagues so much of the rest of the previously rural Westshore. The farm, now owned by Farm Folk City Folk, is managed by the Lohbrunner Community Farm Cooperative, who have

made the mandate of providing affordable, long term land leases to organic farmers one of their primary goals. Sweet Acres Farm and Vitality Farm operate at Lohbrunner, and are offering a joint Community Supported Agriculture Harvest Share Program, with weekly produce pick-ups being offered right in the community of Fernwood. For more information on how you can get in on 15 weeks of the freshest, tastiest vegetables and berries this season, please visit sweetacresfarm.ca, or call Farmer Ariella at 778-679-3313 . And please note—the deadline for signing up for this delicious harvest share is June 25th, so best act fast!
