FernFest adds Belfry Stage Free festival with a Fernwood state of mind

›› Kathryn Juricic & Mila Czemerys

F

ernFest is a jam-packed, community-based, family, art, and music festival. We aim to hire our neighbours, showcase art, support local artists, and have a time together! The beauty of it all is the combination of many people: the volunteers, dozens of performers of all types, artisans, non-profits, and of course the kidlets who fill our neighbourhood with so much joy. This year, FernFest will be expanding into The Belfry Theatre! It all begins Friday night at 5pm, with music in Fernwood Square and on the Belfry Theatre’s main stage. You’ll be able to enjoy a beverage in these all-ages, fully licensed spaces and a sausage at our BBQ. All of FernFest—including the Belfry Theatre—is free to attend. Explore inside the Belfry lobby and check out an amazing interactive sculpture by Monkey C Interactive. There will be workshops in the Belfry’s Studio A on Saturday, while bands, musical theatre, comedy, and drag dawns the Belfry’s main stage. To preregister for workshops, visit fernwoodnrg.ca/ fernfest/worshops. FernFest’s expansion into the Belfry Theatre was made possible by Creative BC, the Festival Investment Grant, and the Province of British Columbia. Saturday morning at FernFest begins wholesome as always, with a community breakfast in Fernwood Square followed by the Kidical Mass Bike Parade. At Vic High, we host the Artisan Market and the Field of Dreams which includes the Market Stage, Kid’s Stage, cardboard castle, art activities, silent auction, musical petting zoo, pop-up theatre, non-profit tables, garden and heritage walking tours, silk screening, bike tune-ups, and bubbles galore. Plus, on Saturday we have a full afternoon of live music on the Gazebo Stage and Belfry Stage from noon to 10pm. Find the FernFest Program Guide on pages 3-5. Happy FernFest friends!

want to see grass planted in the bumpouts, and rather saw this as an opportunity to bring some drought-resistant pollinators into the neighbourhood. We secured funding through the City’s Placemaking Grants to purchase drought and deer resistant native plant species for the bumpouts. With the support of Fernwood NRG and Michael Hill, the Fernwood Neighbourhood Liaison, we were successful in our application.

On May 4th, we organized a planting party and invited folks from the block to come out and lend a hand. And many hands there were! Over a dozen people from tiny babies to seniors a neighbour showed up on the sunny Saturday morning to share their enthusiasm and creative energy. We even got to celebrate a 70th birthday, with cake! The resulting bump-out gardens are beautiful, and we invite all of our Fernwood neighbours to come and enjoy!

After nearly a year of reconstructive surgery, the final touches in the 1300 block of Grant Street are finally complete! For most of 2018, the street was blocked off to thru traffic due to road and utility reconstruction. For months on end there were gaping holes in the street, no sidewalks, no parking, lots of noise, and dust everywhere. The effects were felt throughout the neighbourhood as traffic was cut off and parking was diverted to adjacent streets. Residents of the block took to watching various bulldozers, jackhammers, and other heavy machinery making their way up and down the block during the day and wildlife scurrying around the sewer pipes at night. After many months of hard work by our City staff, the infrastructure portion of the project was finally complete. At the request of the block residents, one detail was left to be tended to—landscaping! The reconstructed street includes two bump outs, creating an opportunity to incorporate some greenery into the streetscape. Residents of the block didn’t

FernFest is all about supporting local acts FernFest fostering community connections through local performances

›› Melissa Faye Reid On June 21st and 22nd, Fernwood Square transforms into a swirling cosmos of performances, markets, a bike parade, and above all else, community spirit. FernFest is back for its 24th year and, let’s just say, is only ripening with age. This free, two day, all-ages event features an array of local musicians and performers. From comedy to funk, FernFest’s community vibe is mirrored in this year’s lineup from Vancouver-based Schwey, to local folks, such as Fox Glove. Fox Glove’s own Renn Madeleine Bibeau said, “Including local performers

in festivals not only keeps local musicians, artists, and performers engaged in their own community, it keeps the local arts community vibrant.” Many colourful acts will appear on three different stages this year, including the Belfry, Gazebo, and Market Stage. If you’re looking for some laughs, be sure to check out the Campfire Empire Comedy Hour, but keep your eyes peeled for local performers Rotten Apple Ruckus, The Copper Lights, Stevie Wise & The Big Feelings,

Diamond Café, Downtown Mischief, Nasti Weather, and many more. Comedy isn’t the only new program added to FernFest’s lineup this year. The Belfry Theatre will host a range of workshops giving FernFest attendees the chance to meet local performers and learn about their creative processes. By highlighting local talent, patrons can experience a sense of comradery with other community members. Supporting local festivals and performers fosters strong

community connections, which is one of the core values of FernFest, and why, I think, it is successful year after year. Local band, Betty and the Kid, performing on the Belfry Stage said, “It’s important to celebrate and acknowledge the artists that you see day to day. So many folks in our community have something special to share and it can inspire us all to make art, because when we see people in our communities that create, we can say ‘oh wait, I can do that!’ It reiterates that anyone can participate in the cultural experience.” So come one, come all to the 24th annual FernFest! See a new band, check out a workshop, grab a hot dog, and swap a stranger for a new friend. Put yourself out there because no one knows where that connection may lead. We formally invite you to jump into—and become—the swirling cosmos that is FernFest. All we ask for in return is that you enjoy the show!

›› Ken Guenter The 12th annual Fernwood Art Stroll will take place on Saturday, June 8th and Sunday, June 9th from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Fernwood makers and artists will be opening their studios to exhibit and sell their art. Visitors will enjoy this opportunity to see artwork in artists’ gardens, studios, and workshops—making the event an enjoyable multi-faceted experience. This year’s stroll will feature painters, sculptors, photographers, calligraphers, illustrators, carvers of wood and stone, and makers of furniture and baskets. The Pandora Arts Collective, at 1923 Fernwood Road, will host an interactive site for children and families. There will

be something unique and handmade for everyone. This event is an opportunity to meet and support local artists. Please invite your friends, family, and colleagues to join in. While touring the neighbourhood you can also enjoy the hospitality of the local businesses in the Fernwood Square and Haultain corners: cafes, pubs, and bistros, and the many unique shops. The event carries on rain or shine. This is a chance for Victorians to meet local artists and designers. It is also an opportunity to walk or cycle around one of Victoria’s wonderful heritage neighborhoods when the gardens and streets are at their best. At the Compost Education Centre, located at 1216 North Park Street, we will hold our Annual General Meeting from 11:00am to noon. Here, members in good standing can vote on issues important

to our organization and learn about the CEC’s extraordinary accomplishments in 2018. AGM attendees are automatically entered to win a door prize, and also receive a free meal ticket for our afternoon BBQ in the garden! (Yep, we’re bribing you to show up for an important meeting.) Following the AGM, at 12:00pm and 2:00pm, our Site Manager, Kayla, will lead interactive site tours. Not gonna be here at 11:00am for our AGM, or not familiar with our site? Never fear, volunteers at FernFest’s Field of Dreams will be waiting to guide folks to our Teaching Gardens, and signage around the neighborhood will point you in the right direction. During these 30 minute site tours, guests will learn through sight, smell, touch, and taste about our Teaching Gardens and multifaceted educational programming.

From 12:30pm to 3:00pm, we’ll be serving up BBQ eats and ice cold drinks by donation. Simultaneously, we will be hosting our annual silent auction in our Strawbale Classroom. Auction items are comprised of donations from an array of local businesses, from swanky restaurants, to useful gardening supplies, those much needed self-care gift cards, and so much more! Come celebrate the fruits of our garden (and our labour), relax, and visit in the garden with good music, good food, and good company while supporting the Compost Education Centre’s commitment to accessible education, environmental sustainability, and, undoubtedly, composting. Dogwood’s Summit: Youth Empowerment Program Looking for youth entering grade 10, 11, or 12 who want to make a different in their community

›› Arielle Houghton Some of the delicious baked goods and lattes available at Marta Cafe + Pantry located at 1600 Bay Street. Photo: Lauren Gaultier

›› Lauren Gaultier Sometimes, it is okay to go beyond the boarders of Fernwood—especially if that means, just across the street and it involves baked goods! Marta Café + Pantry opened their doors on the corner of Bay and Shakespeare just over three months ago and I’m thankful they did. Borne out of a passion for great food, owners Chef Nikita Williams and Nutritionist Ellie Shortt brought to life this casual yet sophisticated multi-purpose spot. If you have yet to visit this French inspired locale, you can expect to find homemade menu items including baked goods,

flavourful lattes, and brunch offerings that have been thoughtfully curated with beauty, flavour, and health in mind. The ambiance is bright and earthy with an outdoor seating area surrounded by a budding herb garden and an indoor space that offers local artisan selections in their pantry space. Although they are currently only open until 3pm Tuesday to Sunday, don’t let that stop you from ordering a glass of rotating BC Wine, or locally produced beer. With an event page on their website, I am willing to bet that evening affairs are not too far away. For more info, check them out at martacafeandpantry.com or @martacafeandpantry.

We are at an extraordinary point in time— youth around the world are raising their voices and standing up for change. From the March for our Lives to Scotland’s campaign to lower the voting age to the Sunrise Movement, youth are taking their future into their own hands. We believe with the right knowledge, skills and tools, British Columbian youth will be effective change-makers in their home communities. Summit is an intensive five-day program organized by the Dogwood Initiative. It is for teenagers aged 15 through 17 that combines classroom theory with real world practice. We offer organizing and campaigning skills in order for youth to become effective changemakers in their communities.

2019 will be our second year of running this program, after a successful pilot in August 2018 in Vancouver. We will be running two programs this year, each with 15 participants. Our programs will be offered July 22nd through July 26th in Vancouver, and August 19th through August 23rd in Victoria. The curriculum includes helping participants design and strategize their own advocacy campaign. We host a variety of guest speakers, including Indigenous youth and local community leaders. Participants learn hands-on government relations skills by visiting a local MLA’s office, and learn about media relations from former and current journalists. The primary goal of the workshop is to provide youth with the tools to make change in their home communities. Participation in this program will also strengthen students’ post-secondary and scholarship applications, and provide them with a network of allies who will be an ongoing support system. To learn more visit dogwoodbc.ca/ summit-2019/. The application deadline is June 7th, 2019.
