a message from OUR PRESIDENT “You have to live your life looking at the windshield, not the rearview mirror.” Such is the wisdom of the Gelia family. When the Board of Trustees has faced a difficult decision, David Gelia, a longtime Trustee, has often pulled out this aphorism to remind us to keep moving forward and to do what is necessary for the next generation of Villa students. In this issue of Vistas, we celebrate David, his father Edward, and the entire Gelia family for several decades of helping Villa navigate the many twists and turns of higher education, always with their characteristic blend of humility, humor, and commitment to the mission. Villa unequivocally would not be where it is today without the guiding hand of the Gelias over the last several decades. In large part because of them, the view through the proverbial windshield has arguably never looked better. Last year’s commencement was one of our very best, punctuated by the conferral of Villa’s first-ever honorary degree to a most deserving favorite son of Buffalo, William Fichtner. A writer, director, producer, and highly acclaimed actor, William held two separate workshops with our Digital Filmmaking students, delivered a touching and inspiring commencement address, and shook hands and took pictures with nearly every single person in attendance at commencement. He is the newest member of the Villa family. The view has even improved from there. This fall, we welcomed our largest incoming class in over 25 years! The hallways are busy, classrooms are full, and the Russell J. Salvatore Commons is buzzing with activity. And there is much more to come— exciting campus renovations, new academic programs, and innovative strategic partnerships. Most importantly, our students are achieving great things, many of which you can read about in this issue. Enjoy this issue of Vistas, and thank you for your continued dedication to Villa Maria College.

Villa Maria Received Community Impact Award

Villa Maria Digital Media Art Center Ribbon Cutting

Villa Maria College was named the winner of the 2022 Community Impact Award from the Cheektowaga Chamber of Commerce. The award recognized a local company, organization, or individual whose outstanding and ongoing contributions have made a lasting and positive impact on the community.

The College cut the ribbon to mark the official grand opening of its brand new, state-of-the-art Digital Media Art Center, or the DMAC, on December 8, 2022.

National Football League Commercial Starring Dion Dawkins Filmed on Campus

Still of Dion Dawkins from the commerical

A commercial for the National Football League was shot in the Main Building and Dion Dawkins was its star. This was Dawkins’, a pro-bowl offensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills, first time on Pine Ridge Road. “Hosting a professional crew gave our students a really unique experience,” said Dr. Hartnett, Provost. “It’s not every day that they get such an intimate look at what goes into making a national commercial. This experience served as a potential ‘day in the life’ for many of our students – a sneak peek into what they could be doing after graduation.” Scan the QR code to watch the final commercial.

“The DMAC provides the highest-level equipment and coolest learning space for our digital media art students,” said Executive Vice President Brian Emerson. “There is no other space like the DMAC in Western New York. It is an investment in our students and another testament to our commitment to their success.” California Closets Annual Scholarship

Villa Maria Reports 14% Enrollment Increase and Largest Incoming Class in Over 25 Years Despite the local and national trends of declining enrollment in higher education, Villa Maria College welcomed its largest class in over 25 years. Exceeding its Fall 2023 enrollment goal by 25%, Villa Maria brought in 80 more new students than last year; a 30% increase over last year’s incoming class. This year’s enrollment increase brings the College’s total overall enrollment up to over 550 students, a 14% increase over last fall and its highest since 2019. Villa Maria’s enrollment growth primarily consists of new, full-time students despite a declining college-age population and fierce competition. Some facts about Villa Maria’s incoming class include: • Villa Maria received over 1000 applications for the first time in history.

Interior Design Student Daniella Herman, ‘25, was awarded a $2,500 scholarship from California Closets.

• First time freshman students are up 40% from last year.

The annual competition is just one example of the many practical, handson experiences interior design students have during their time at Villa. Daniella’s project, a closet in a master bedroom, was selected as the winning entry by a panel of distinguished, practicing professionals who conducted a blind review process.

• The highest concentration of new students are in Animation, Game Design, Psychology, Music Industry, and Interior Design.

• Transfer student enrollment is up 10%, which includes 18 former Medaille University students.

• The number includes 18 Say Yes Buffalo Apprenticeship students.

CAMPUS news From Behind the Scenes to Center Stage, the 2023 American Advertising Awards Show was Unprecedented for Villa Maria This year’s American Advertising Awards were an extra special event for Villa Maria. From the event’s concept, to its production, to winning one of the major awards, the College was represented every step of the way. Of course, the biggest deal of the night was our Graphic Design students winning the majority of the student awards – four out of six, including Student Best of Show. Kelsey Sikora, ‘23, won Student Best of Show for Buffalo Monopoly in the Product or Service Sales Promotion – Packaging category. 2023 marks the fourth consecutive year in which a Villa student has won the Student Best of Show award. Previous winners include Lindsay Neilson, ’21, Zach Huber, ’21, and Francesca Bubb, ‘19. All 3 are currently working as designers locally: Neilson at Mr. Smith Agency, Huber at Mirror Matter, and Bubb at Delaware North.

All student winners include: • Kelsey Sikora, ‘23 – Gold for Buffalo Monopoly • Jonathan Murtha, ‘22 – Gold for Void Crew Brand Campaign • Cameron Cook, ’23 – Silver for Buffalo Star Party Campaign

Three alumni also won professional awards in several categories: Katie Steckstor, ‘21, Lindsay Neilson, ‘21, and Brittney Sikora, ‘14. Brittney Sikora also served as a judge for the student work.

The event photographer was also a Villa grad. Monica Bates, a 2020 graduate of the College’s Photography program, was behind the lens capturing still shots from the evening.

For the first time, senior graphic design students spent weeks separately brainstorming and concepting a theme, including everything from a catchy name and logo treatment to how the theme would be executed on show night. When the students’ concepts were complete, AAF Buffalo board members voted on Kelsey Sikora’s 'Promenade' concept as this year’s winner.

Sikora worked closely with the board to establish the logo, color palette, and overall vision for Promenade. In addition to planning the show, hosting the show, and winning numerous awards, Lindsay Neilson was named the winner of the Future Star award. The Future Star award honors an outstanding young professional in the marketing and advertising field who has demonstrated great potential in his or her early years in the industry. The College also served as a backdrop for much of the AAA show presentation. The opening video was filmed in the recording studio, restroom, classrooms, ground floor, and lockers. It features Neilson, with a special appearance from Kelsey Sikora. The video was created by dPost and can be viewed by scanning the QR code to the right.

Addison Henderson Hosted Exclusive Workshops for Filmmaking Students, Panel at VillaCon Actor, director, producer, and writer Addison Henderson returned to campus in the spring for two exciting events: a workshop exclusively for Villa Maria’s film students and as a panelist at VillaCon, the College’s one-day gaming convention. His workshop put Villa’s film students in front of two industry professionals: Logan Coles – a writer and producer from Los Angeles and Kevin Polowy – a writer, producer, senior entertainment correspondent, and host at Yahoo Entertainment. Henderson also hosted a one-hour question-and-answer style panel, followed by a 30-minute meet and greet at VillaCon, which took place on March 25. The panel was moderated by filmmaking student Romone Reeves, ‘23.

CAMPUS news Vikings Added Women’s Flag Football Villa Maria College launched its women’s flag football team – the first intercollegiate women’s flag football team in Western New York. The launch of flag football broadens the College’s athletic offering and provides students with varying athletic interests and abilities an additional opportunity to get involved on campus. It also aligns with Villa Maria’s ongoing commitment to providing its students with a holistic education that includes a diverse – and growing – range of extracurricular activities that support their personal growth as well as their academic growth. Women’s flag football is a fast-growing sport across the country, and especially here in the Buffalo area. There are nearly 50 teams competing at the high school level in Western New York, and the participation level continues to grow each year. The team is led by Head Coach Keith Wing.

More than 100 artists applied to participate in the festival, and 26 were selected. Among them was Tay Morris, a 2018 graduate of Villa Maria’s Animation program. Villamation 2023 Villamation is the College’s 24-hour animation competition that challenges students to work in small groups to create a short film from start to finish. The 9th annual Villamation challenged students to use the word “compassion,” the College’s core value of last year, as the theme of their film. Timothy Clavier, ’23, Brianna Scutt, ’23, Savannah Hicks, ’24, Haley Wylupski, ’24, Cailtin Cork, ’24, and Kenneth Price, ’24 created “Fruit Salad,” which was named Best in Show by the College’s Animation faculty. NEW PROGRAMS Digital Media Design The digital world is always changing, and graduates of Villa Maria’s newest two-year program will be ready to take it by storm. Equipped with the skills and perspectives needed to conceptualize and create stunning visuals and impactful motion design, students will graduate as standout storytellers with experience in animation, game design, graphic design, filmmaking, and more. Like all of Villa Maria’s academic programs, Digital Media Design offers students a hands-on, practical, and focused learning experience, specifically tailored to the ever-evolving approach to art.

Fine Art Bachelor Program Artists belong at Villa, and with the launch of the College’s Bachelor of Fine Art program, they can stay for four years. Fine Art is the traditional term used to embrace drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking, produced for its own sake. Recently, the term has come to include photography, video, and the modern technologies that generate visual imagery. The program culminates with students exhibiting their bodies of work, often at one of the many art galleries Villa has partnered with throughout Western New York. Graduates emerge prepared to make a living as an artist, producing conceptually challenging and highly skilled bodies of work.

Certificate Programs Last year, the College launched its first set of professional Certification Programs. The convenient and affordable courses were designed for adult learners who want to acquire new skills, explore an interest, earn credentials, or change career paths all together. Villa Maria currently offers 17 Certificate Programs in Filmmaking, Marketing and Design, and Computer Software Development. New programs are in development and special pricing is available for alumni. Learn

BUILDING BUFFALO'S BY KRISTEN SCHOBER

H

ollywood has been the epicenter of the world’s film industry for generations and aspiring filmmakers have dreamt of working under its bright lights for just as long. But the high costs, advances in digital technology, and cultural shifts have given smaller cities, like Buffalo, a chance to step into the spotlight. The exponential growth of Buffalo’s film industry has created a significant number of film jobs locally. That’s where Villa Maria College comes in. Villa Maria’s filmmaking students have the unique opportunity to learn from working actors and experienced faculty in the College’s four-year Baccalaureate program, advance their skill set with our Certificate Programs, and then get a job in the film industry right here in Western New York. Unlike traditional film programs, Villa students have cameras in their hands almost immediately and they don’t put them down until their last credit hour has been completed. Students learn all aspects of filmmaking: producing, directing, lighting, sound, set, costume design,

film industry

graphic design, editing, and so much more. “I love to write scripts and be behind a camera,” said Romone Reeves, a 2023 graduate of Villa Maria’s Digital Filmmaking program. “I looked at other colleges for screenwriting, but when I read through their curriculum, it was more about studying film rather than ‘doing film.’ When you just study film, you don’t really get a grasp of things. Villa really allowed me to be involved in all aspects of filmmaking. That always stood out.” Recognizing that there was an immediate demand for jobs in the local film industry, the College designed the area’s only two professional certificate programs in filmmaking: On-set Grip & Electric and On-Set Production Assistant. Both courses are taught on-site at Buffalo FilmWorks, the largest major motion picture film studio in Western New York. Certificate program students learn from industry experts in a professional film studio and, upon completion of the two-day programs, have the knowledge they need to walk out of

FilmWorks and on to a professional movie set, and get paid. Eager to begin his career in the film industry, Reeves enrolled in the On-Set Grip and Electric certificate program class. In an interview with the Buffalo News, Reeves said, “[Instructor] Chuck [Moran] taught us to problem-solve little scenarios like, ‘Oh, we don’t have the dolly. How are we going to get the shot?’ Or, ‘We can’t set the light up here. Where else can we put this light to make it look like sunrise?’ Plus, the experience gave me a pool of people I would not have been able to get in contact with otherwise.” According to Sarah Mann, Assistant Professor of Digital Filmmaking, the Production Assistant class is equally practical for anyone looking to get some quick experience. “The class teaches organizational skills to help filming move smoothly, from ‘wrangling extras’ and helping them fill out paperwork, to helping scout locations, to ordering lunch for the entire cast and crew. Getting to work early is also a production assistant

mantra,” she said in the same interview. The College’s partnership with Buffalo FilmWorks has become a foundation of the Digital Filmmaking program, and it set the stage for two additional collaborations. Addison Henderson has held two workshops that he designed exclusively for Villa Maria’s film students. The workshops served as a thorough introduction into independent filmmaking and put students in front of Kevin Polowy, a writer, producer, senior entertainment correspondent, and host at Yahoo Entertainment, and Logan Coles, a writer and producer from Los Angeles, who was Chadwick Boseman’s producing partner. Coles is also the executive producer of Sea Change Entertainment and the co-founder and principal at X-ception Content. Henderson's next movie, a horror film entitled “Blythe” will be shot in Buffalo, and Henderson plans to offer Villa students on-set internship opportunities. Henderson also made an appearance at VillaCon: the Second Edition. During the event, he hosted a Q&A-style workshop that was moderated by Reeves. Henderson has plans to return to campus during the 2023-2024 academic year. Another of Villa Maria’s supporters is Hollywood’s own William Fichtner. Fichtner, a Buffalo native, made several trips to campus last year, spending significant amounts of time with students during every visit. Reeves believes that the opportunity to meet and learn from Fichtner was one of the biggest takeaways from his Villa education. “I remember when he first walked in,” he said. “My buddies and I were listing off all the things he was in: Batman, Prison Break, Mom...the stuff I watch at 3 AM trying to finish up my mountains of homework. He was amazing; super down to earth. I would have never met him if I didn’t come to Villa.”

And working with Fichtner wasn’t just a one-time thing.

It is pretty incredible, what’s going on at this little school. It’s the little engine that could. Their Visual Arts and Filmmaking programs are the real deal. They’re top notch, and I’m very impressed. -William Fichtner-

“He did two workshops. The first one was supposed to be a 5-minute thing but because we were so eager and kept banging out questions, he ended up staying for an hour and a half,” recalls Reeves. “Then he came back to watch all of our senior films and he gave us feedback. It was one of the most amazing experiences,” said Reeves. “Hearing him say ‘I have style that you can’t buy’ will always stay with me as will the advice he gave me.” Following the senior film screening, the College held a private reception honoring Villa Maria’s lasting commitment to the Buffalo film industry. The event gave film students more face time with Fichtner and other key members of the local film industry, including Tim Clark, Buffalo’s Film Commissioner. Fichtner spent the evening engaging with students, and his enthusiasm for the program was apparent.

“It is pretty incredible, what’s going on at this little school,” said Fichtner, in an interview to Channel 2 News. “It’s the little engine that could. Their Visual Arts and Filmmaking programs are the real deal. They’re top notch, and I’m very impressed.” Fichtner’s third visit to campus was a moment that is sure to go down in College history: his delivery of the 2023 commencement address. During his 10-minute speech, Fichtner encouraged the graduates to follow their hearts and to never stop working towards their goals. “When you leave here, so much is going to be out of your control,” he said. “But not how much you invest in yourself. The greatest part of college is not what your degree is in, but how much your eyes are opened. Never close them.” Fichtner’s advice is reminiscent of the role Villa Maria is playing in the local film industry. The College is all in on its investment into its one-of-a-kind film programs. As long as movies are being made in Western New York, Villa Maria will be in full support of the industry, creating a workforce that is creative, educated, experienced, and ready to hit the ground running.

THE GELIA FAMILY generations of giving

BY KAREN MARLEY

C

olleges often rely on alumni for the financial donations that are critical to helping a school prosper. But Villa Maria College is not a typical college. Its circle of supporters extends to those whose connection to the school is not defined by a shared academic experience, but something much stronger; a belief and sense of advocacy for an important cause. Few embody this giving spirit quite like the Gelia family. Just as Villa Maria College recognizes and cares for the whole student, nurturing every individual to ensure success in their academic journey and beyond, the Gelia family supports the entirety of Villa Maria College, caring for that which makes it unique. For decades, the Gelia family has given Villa Maria College financial support, leadership, and community building efforts so it can continue its important role in students’ lives and the larger community. SPIRITUAL BONDS The Gelia family connection to Villa Maria College started with Edward Gelia. “My dad went to Catholic grade school and high school,” says David Gelia, Edward’s son and a Canisius College graduate, himself. “He discovered Villa Maria through then President Sister Marcella Marie Garus and developed an

emotional connection to the College. A lot of us who are active with Villa feel the same way.” David explains that he and his father support the foundational principle on which the Felician Sisters Order was founded. The guiding philosophy best summarized as, “Teach them to fish and feed them for life.” When paired with their strong belief in education, the result is a desire to help Villa Maria College empower students with access to intellectual enrichment and upward mobility in life through higher education.

HELP THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST Small with numbers and huge with heart, the Villa Maria College student body is incredibly diverse both culturally and demographically, with many students being the first members of their family to attend college. As such, they have a different set of needs and precious little space for any setbacks or challenges. “Buffalo is the nation’s fourth poorest city,” says Vice President for Development, Mary Robinson. “We historically serve a low-income population.”

David Gelia and his wife Kathy Gelia

Recognizing students’ need for financial support, the Gelias established The Edward and Eleanor Gelia Scholarship in 2016. Because it’s an endowed scholarship, it’s an enduring gift that will serve students for decades. They also have included Villa Maria College in their wills. “They are truly wonderful people,” Robinson says. The scholarship’s criteria – that a student have financial need and academic merit – are minimal and the Gelias trust Villa Maria College to use its best judgement in determining recipients. Once selected, a student is eligible to receive funding for each year of enrollment as long as scholarship criteria is met. For recipients, the impact is significant. Robinson is quick to point out that the scholarship’s value is measured in the difference between a student staying or leaving. Muntasirin Tanbin is one such recipient. Coming from Bangladesh, he is attending Villa Maria College to attain a degree as a physical therapy assistant, or PTA. Muntasirin and his sister are the first

generation in their family to attend college. “This award is really helpful because the PTA program is expensive,” Muntasirin says. “I am very happy and proud of myself that I got the scholarship. This money lowers my burden.” The Gelias recognize that their donation at Villa Maria carries far more value than a donation of the same amount to a larger school. Edward says, “Any little bit you do for Villa is magnified so much. Nothing is too small or too big and all is appreciated and needed. The need is tremendous, and it goes much farther.” For the Gelias, investing in the student experience and outcome is an honor and privilege and they often attend graduation to share the excitement. It touches them every time.

financial. Both Edward and David have been active board members for decades. Edward served for 19 years and was part of the College’s expansion to offer four-year courses and degrees. As of 2023, David has served 21 years, of which seven were held as chair. The two overlapped for about four years. Villa Maria College’s fourth president, Dr. Matthew Giordano, describes David Gelia as one of the key leaders of the board and one who helped the College navigate the transition between Sister Marcella’s 40-year tenure as president and his own. David’s complete support and confidence in Dr. Giordano was both encouraging and validating. “He wanted to see me thrive,” Dr. Giordano says. David also applied his years of financial perspective and strategy to help the College successfully navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. “During COVID we had choices to make . . . hard choices,” Dr. Giordano recalls. “David has a strong sense of mission and its value. He said we must continue to be there for the students, even more so during the crisis. We kept services and staff in place despite the financial risk and are now stronger in the long-term.”

“When students graduate the whole family is there,” Edward observes. “It’s such a big deal.” David agrees. “At Villa Maria College, you make a difference,” he says. “The most exciting day is graduation. You’re seeing first-generation graduates. Helping them feels really good.” SERVANT LEADERSHIP The Gelia legacy of giving goes beyond

2023 – 2024 | 11

GIVING FORCE MULTIPLIER As financial strategists, Edward and David recognized the need to grow Villa Maria College’s network of donors. To that end, they started a fundraising golf tournament. Edward chaired it the first year and David took it over from there. It was a position he held for 20 years. In addition to a good time, the golf tournament served a critical purpose. Golf is a social game and often attracts those with the financial resources to make donations. But for Villa Maria College, the tournament posed a challenge. Traditionally, school-hosted golf fundraisers depend on alumni, but Villa Maria College’s graduates are still early in their careers. Gelia kept the entry fee reasonable to encourage participation but marketed the tournament for other golfers to attend. “Numerous people who are now benefactors of Villa were introduced through the golf tournament,” Gelia says.

Villa Maria are sparked long after the tournament. Edward has been a devoted participant for each of the tournament’s 20-year run.

As long as there is breath in a Gelia family member’s body, we will always be thrilled to be part of the Villa story. -David GeliaDavid’s two sons have also taken up the mantle of supporting the College. Today, when anyone asks any of the Gelias about Villa Maria College, pure enthusiasm and passion take over. “As long as there is breath in a Gelia family member’s body, we will always be thrilled to be part of the Villa story,” David says. And that’s a story with a happy ending for all.

To spread the Villa Maria College story, Gelia admits to a sneaky tactic. He always provided a welcome gift that included the College name and could be worn on a golf bag. In this way, conversations about

THE SCHOLARSHIP

that makes the difference In the words of our students:

Not only am I a student in the Psychology program, I am also a teaching assistant at a local elementary school. I work with students in a behavioral 8-1-1 class. I am already using what I learn in class to help my students overcome their day-to-day challenges. The Board Scholarship helped me by allowing me to continue working towards my goal of becoming a behavioral specialist in a local school district. When I complete my studies, I will be the first person in my family to graduate from college. – Tionne Miller-Armstrong, '25, Psychology Growing up, I spent time watching cartoons and playing video games. Now I’m a senior in Villa’s Animation program, and I want to create something that brings the joy and excitement I felt from that part of my childhood to others. Being awarded the Board of Trustees Scholarship lightened my financial burden, which allowed me to focus more on the most important aspect of school – learning. Your generosity and investment in my future have inspired me to work harder to show that I am worthy of these funds. I hope to mentor students in this field once I am more established in my career. – Michael Scrivens, '24, Animation I dropped out of Buffalo State several years ago because I was unhappy with my major. I decided to go back to school for film. It’s something I’ve always had an interest in for my entire life. After looking at different programs, I decided to come to Villa, largely because of the small classes, individualized attention, and Professor Sarah Mann’s teaching style, plus how she takes an interest in her students. I’ve had great experiences in my Digital Filmmaking classes. We work hands-on with cameras, which is something I’ve never done before. I’ve made several music videos for class projects, and I am happy that I have the skills to do something I am interested in. Thank you for the Board Scholarship! Particularly because I am a first-generation college student, and the financial burden was a concern. – India Seychew, '25, Digital Filmmaking The Board Scholarship reduced the pressure I felt about making my tuition payment. Now I can devote more time to studying, completing my projects, and achieving my potential. I am very relieved and very grateful.

Villa Maria’s Board of Trustees, with the support of Felician Services, Inc., collectively raised funds for student scholarships at a critical time. “As board members we know that, while every effort is made to keep tuition costs low, some of our most talented students struggle to pay for college,” said Catherine Grantier Cooley, the chairperson of the board. “We wanted to make sure that deserving students could continue to pursue their dream of higher education at Villa Maria College.” Twenty students received scholarships for the spring 2023 semester, helping to ensure they could complete their coursework for the 2022-2023 academic year. From firstyear students transitioning from high school to college, to single parents, to working professionals navigating a new work-life balance, the financial contributions went a long way. When students don’t have to worry about paying their bill, they can focus on what really matters: their complete college experience. This means better attendance, higher grade point averages, and more time for the fun stuff, like clubs, activities, and sports. Scan here to contribute to the student scholarship fund.
