THE SCOTT BIELER CENTER for ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE:
OPENING JANUARY 2025

In my 19 years at Villa, I have had many conversations with students that have left me in disbelief.
As they have rattled through the busyness of their lives—going to college full-time, working multiple jobs, caring for siblings, volunteering at church—I have found myself wondering how, at a young age, they can be so diligent and productive. These conversations have always reminded me that we owe it to them to keep pace, to work just as hard to give them every opportunity for success.
These are the hallmarks of the past year
Perhaps never before have we enjoyed such a monumentally productive year, the result of the focused effort of faculty and staff members, students and alumni, friends and donors. In the last few months, we have:
• Embarked on the largest facilities project in the College’s history, the renovation of the former Library Building into the redesigned Scott Bieler Center for Academic Excellence, a state-of-the-art facility where students can receive integrated academic support services;
• Launched a new strategic plan for the next three years, along with new mission and vision statements that more accurately reflect our purpose and aspirations;
• Started construction on the Institute for Mobility Innovation and Technology, a collaboration with Daemen University and Buffalo Rehab Group, which will provide advanced physical therapy services to patients with severe diseases and injuries; and
• Welcomed the largest incoming class in Villa’s history, resulting in our highest total enrollment ever.
It is quite a time to be part of the Villa family. With your support and engagement, we will keep this momentum going, ensuring that we honor our hardworking students by providing them with the most accessible, supportive, and effective educational experience in Western New York. I hope this issue of Vistas makes you as excited as I am about the future of Villa Maria College.
Matthew Giordano, Ph.D. President, Villa Maria College

Student Exhibit “Color Beat” Displayed in October 2023
“Color Beat” showcased the work of five student artists whose work centered around
the qualities of color, rhythm, and pattern in diverse ways, both formally and conceptually. Works ranged from traditional drawing and painting to quilting and soft sculpture. Patterns, both created and found, were evident in nearly every piece.
Students who had their work shown in “Color Beat” included Sonia Campanella, '19 & '21, and Gretchen Wylegala, '20. Scan the QR code to see the work.
“Dry Run” was the Gallery’s Final Exhibit of 2023
The exhibition was an opportunity for Fine Art and Photography students to preview the artwork they made in preparation for their solo senior exhibitions. Works ranged from digital illustration to abstract painting, from formal explorations to images that wrestle with identity.
“Being a student at Villa has truly been an honor. I believe I made the right choice when I decided to attend this college to further work on my art,” said Alexa Szuder, '24. “While being a student here, I have been able to work closely one-on-one with my professors. Professors Butler and Weekley have had a tremendous influence on me and my work. Being able to have a personal studio to work in has been very
helpful in allowing me to get my work done. I am very proud of the work that I have done over my time here at Villa. The work featured in ‘Dry Run’ holds a special place in my heart. My paintings of the endangered species are very important because I wanted to highlight how the animals we all know and love are sadly dying before our eyes.”
Featured artists included Hayley Bigham, '24, Leviticus Burrell-Cook, '25, Destiny Caceres, '24, Valerie Diaz Perez, '24, Tracy Mendicino, '24, and Alexa Szuder, '24.
Men’s Basketball Team Earned the #9 Seed in the USCAA Tournament
After an 85-76 victory over the Berkeley Knights on Saturday, March 2, Villa Maria’s men’s basketball team secured their bid for the USCAA Tournament.
“To see all the hard work we have put in, and everything we have had to endure and overcome pay off, is truly a feeling that is hard to describe,” said Head Coach Desmond Randall. “First, it hits you that we have achieved one of our season goals in winning a conference championship, and then when you realize that is reality, it hits you that we have officially qualified for nationals, which is always one of our top goals. To make it to the national tournament for the second straight year is such an amazing accomplishment because it assures us that everything we are doing is paying off and that we are on the right track.”

The 10th Annual Villamation Took Place in March
Villamation, the College’s 24-hour animation competition, has become a staple of each spring semester. This year, 32 students of all levels of proficiency were divided into four teams of eight, with the goal of creating stories that incorporated randomly selected character traits, motivations, and conflicts. Students sacrificed their sleep and their sanity to follow ideas from concepts to completion in just one day.
This year’s “Best in Show” was “The Trainee,” completed by Elliot Batista, '27, Demonte Chatmon, '24, Kareem Donmore, '24, Jamila Jelks, '25, Mylo Rafter, '27, Jay G. Ramos, '25, and Michael Scrivens, '24. Scan the QR code to watch "The Trainee."
“Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom” Screened on Campus
Villa Maria partnered with the KORP Foundation and WUFO to host a movie screening of “Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom” in the College auditorium on April 4.
“Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom” is an unscripted documentary that invites viewers into the story of Juneteenth, the holiday recognizing the end of legalized slavery in Texas. Told through the eyes of a Black man learning about the holiday from the
direct descendants of those liberated, the story serves as a parable that offers hope, and the insight that faith can be the greatest weapon against injustice.
The movie screening was complemented by a panel discussion, live entertainment, Blackowned vendors, refreshments, and more.

VILLA MARIA CONTINUES TO FOSTER A DIVERSE STUDENT POPULATION AND PINPOINT THEIR NEEDS. WE'RE REALLY FOCUSED ON EDUCATIONAL EQUITY AND ON IMPROVING ACCESS AND AFFORDABILITY FOR EDUCATION. WE PUT A LOT OF RESOURCES AND TIME INTO MAKING SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE REALLY WELL CARED FOR.
- DR. MATTHEW GIORDANO
illa Maria’s fall 2024 semester started off on a high note: record breaking admissions.
As the vast majority of local and national institutions continue to experience declines in enrollment, Villa Maria welcomed its largest class in the College’s 63-year history. This year’s incoming class brought 280 students to campus, bringing the total student body up to more than 615 students.
This achievement builds on the growth the College experienced in 2023 – another recordsetting year – in which Villa Maria brought in over 40 more new students than the prior year, a 15% increase. All told, enrollment has increased by over 31% in just two years.
This unprecedented growth can be attributed to a number of things. Among them are the College’s in-demand degree programs, proven student access, academic readiness and ongoing support offerings, and the College’s steadfast commitment to educational equity.
“We have a very particular niche,” said Dr. Matthew Giordano, Villa Maria’s President. “We have a real strength in creative fields, in programs like Animation, Game Design, Music Production, and more. These programs appeal to young people, and they meet the employment needs of Western New York. These programs are definitely part of the reason why we’re seeing the growth that we are.”
In the past year, the College has added Criminal Justice and Sport Management to its dynamic roster of academic programs. Both programs offer students transferable skills and valuable knowledge that allows them to pursue careers in fields that are growing here in
Western New York and beyond. These new additions complement Villa Maria’s established programs, some of which are Computer Software Development, Digital Filmmaking, Digital Media and Communications, Graphic Design, Interior Design, and more.
“Villa Maria continues to foster a diverse student population and pinpoint their needs,” continued Dr. Giordano. "We're really focused on educational equity and on improving access and affordability for education. We put a lot of resources and time into making sure that our students are really well cared for."
Villa Maria has been, and continues to be, the most affordable private college in Western New York. Tuition remained flat for the 2024-2025 academic year, 99% of students received some form of financial aid, 95% of students received Villa-funded grants and scholarships, and textbooks and supplies were provided to all students for no cost.
When students reported that transportation was a barrier to success, the College introduced Viking Ride. The program provides every student with a monthly credit to the rideshare company Lyft, a reliable way to get to and from campus, thereby improving their attendance in classes. The College also worked with Senator Timothy Kennedy’s office and the NFTA to create a bus stop on campus.
“Outside of the classroom, many of our students deal with food and housing instabilities,” continued Dr. Giordano. “When you’re worried about where you’ll sleep at night or when your next meal will come, it can be difficult to focus on school, and understandably so.”
Through the Care Center, all students have access to a counselor who helps link them with outside resources and providers that can help them overcome these, and any other non-academic challenges they
might face. The Care Center can also offer students facing unforeseen circumstances with limited financial assistance through the Student Emergency Fund, which is funded solely by college employees.
The Care Center is complemented by the Student Success Center, or the SSC, which supports students academically. The SSC provides academic coaching, mentoring, tutoring, supplemental instruction, and more. Students are welcomed into the SSC to help get a better understanding of class lectures, complete coursework, prepare for tests, and more.
And for students with learning differences, Villa Maria offers its one-of-a-kind Achieve Program. Through Achieve, students who have ADD, ADHD, Autism, and other challenges can receive individualized support that allows them to successfully transition from high school to college, excel both socially and academically here on campus, complete internships, and build their resumes before they become working professionals.
With flourishing academic support services in place, College leadership shifted focus to campus infrastructure. The next key strategic investment Villa Maria is making is the Scott Bieler Center for Academic Excellence. The Bieler Center is going to be a state-of-the-art facility where our students can go to get the support services that they need. Thanks to a generous leadership gift from Scott Bieler, President and Chief Executive Officer of West Herr, construction is well underway.
“The vision of Villa Maria College – to serve and empower students from our community who might not otherwise be able to attend college – is a key element in addressing disparity and equity issues,” said Bieler. “Villa Maria is a unique pillar in our community, deserves our community’s gratitude, and is an organization we are proud to support.”
The 2.8 million-dollar project is the largest construction undertaking in College history, and the need for the space is more apparent than ever.
“Students today need more assistance in and out of the classroom than ever before,” said Dr. Giordano. “Over the past decade, Villa Maria has been a leader in student support. It’s at the heart of what we do. The Bieler Center will allow us to take that support to the next level. The Bieler Center will be a contemporary space where students can receive the critical academic, social, and emotional support they need to be successful.”
The Scott Bieler Center for Academic Excellence will empower students to reach their full potential by bringing the College’s many support services together under one roof. It will combine the Library, tutoring, advising, mental health counseling, career services, the Achieve Center, and more, making them quicker and more efficient to access. Plus, it will house a state-of-the-art information literacy classroom. This space will support students far beyond the classroom and into
every facet of their lives.
Despite still being under construction, students are already sharing in the excitement the new space will bring to campus.
“The Bieler Center will be a great way to bring the whole community closer together,” said Juston Johnson, '25. “It’s a place where we can all hang out with each other. It’s also a great place to seek support from staff.”
Senior Daniella Herman, '25, agrees.
“The Bieler Center will be the perfect space for students to come together, no matter their major,” she said. “It will be a good place to get help academically, find books, or as just another study space and touch down space for people to collaborate.”
The grand opening for Scott Bieler Center for Academic Excellence is planned for January 2025. You can follow along with the progress by visiting www.villa.edu/bielercenter.
Across campus, construction has begun
on the Daemen University Institute for Mobility Innovation & Technology at Villa Maria College, or the IMIT.
A collaborative project between Villa Maria, Buffalo Rehab Group, Daemen University, and Senator Tim Kennedy’s office, the IMIT will be a comprehensive facility that utilizes advanced technology in a physical therapy-based clinic to provide treatment of spinal cord injuries, strokes, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as sports injuries, orthopedics, and other conditions. It aims to address the pressing needs of individuals who are suffering with chronic pain.
The ultramodern facility is built on four interconnected components: clinical care, advocacy, research, and education. It will offer access to leading robotic devices and assistive technology to restore motion and function following a range of injuries and illnesses.
“Villa Maria College remains committed to serving the Western New York Community – especially our neighbors on Buffalo’s East Side,” said Dr. Giordano. “We are thrilled to work with Buffalo Rehab Group, Daemen University, and Senator Kennedy’s Office to bring the Institute for Mobility Innovation & Technology to life on our growing campus. The IMIT is filling a major need by making advanced healthcare more accessible, particularly to a traditionally underserved population. Its creation aligns with our mission and core values and further demonstrates our deep dedication to creating a better, more equitable Buffalo.”
The IMIT will be housed in Villa Maria’s Athletic Center. The College’s former social hall is in the midst of a complete transformation. About twothirds of the 6,000-square-foot space will hold equipment such as the Hokoma Lokomat, a robotic exoskeleton machine that supports a patient’s body while helping them relearn how to stand, walk, balance, and perform other movements after an injury, stroke, or acute illness like
multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease.
The remaining one-third will be transformed into classroom space for Daemen and Villa Maria students. It will have windows onto the IMIT therapy center and the ability to open into adjoining space for classes from both institutions to work together.
The IMIT will be staffed by 10 to 15 Buffalo Rehab Group clinicians. They will work with an equal number of students getting hands-on training to assist patients using the equipment.
A grand opening is tentatively planned for December 2024. You can learn more about the IMIT at www.villa.edu/imit.
WE HAVEN'T TAPPED OUT. THERE IS MORE WE'RE GOING TO DO TO CONTINUE TO CREATE GROWTH AND MORE THAT WE CAN OFFER STUDENTS - BOTH CURRENT AND FUTURE - THAN EVER BEFORE.
- DR. MATTHEW GIORDANO
Finally, Villa Maria’s Music Building has been revitalized. In collaboration with Felician Community Services, the basement has been completely overhauled. It is now home to the Sister Mary Josette Food Pantry, the Wear ‘n Share Clothing Closet, a pet pantry, a diaper bank in partnership with Every Bottom Covered, and more.
The first floor of the Music Building also got a facelift, which included some classroom upgrades, a fresh coat of paint, and new lighting, all giving the space a bright, refreshed, inviting feel. The star of this area, though, is the new mural that was just installed. Created by alum
Carl Hunley, '15, it represents Villa Maria’s connection to the music industry, especially here in Buffalo.
Despite all this immense growth, this is just the beginning for Villa Maria College. “There is more to come," said Dr. Giordano. "We haven’t tapped out. There is more we’re going to do to continue to create growth and more that we can offer students – both current and future – than ever before.”
Anyone who has ever been to a Buffalo Bison’s game has seen first-hand how thrilling minor league baseball games can be. From the giveaways to the dugout dances to the Buffalo wingcelery-blue cheese races to the game itself, there is no shortage of excitement.
It takes a huge team of people to execute successfully all of the hallmarks of the game day experience. Last summer, three Vikings were part of the team. Breanna Marchewka, ‘24, Tanner DeMarco, ‘19, ‘24, ‘25, and Lucas Mendes, ‘24, had the internship experience of their lives working with the Bisons.
Unlike some internships in which students spend their time filing papers and getting coffee, the Bisons kept the Villa students busy with tasks that translate directly to their respective fields of study.
“Internships are very important,” said Ally Marcano, the Bisons’ Head Graphic Designer. “They get your foot in the door, and they get you used to doing something new every day. We’re always busy; there’s never any downtime and getting thrown into that without experience is overwhelming. We try to give all our interns a feel for what we do day-to-day.”
For DeMarco, an aspiring graphic designer, the “day-to-day” included

designing images that he saw being used live on the jumbotron during games, on the Bisons’ website, and many other places.
“I do graphic design work, both promotional stuff and game day stuff,” said DeMarco. “A lot of my work ends up on the scoreboard for fans to see during the game, and it translates for online usage as well. Some days, I’ll be in the press box running the scoreboard with my boss or communicating with the camera team to get promos displayed. Other times, I’ll be up there watching everything run while I’m working on graphics.”
Like DeMarco, Marchewka was also a vital part of the
organization’s internship team.
“Marketing and promotions interns execute all promotional things during home games,” said Amanda Ballestro, the Bisons’ Entertainment and Promotions Coordinator. “They are essentially providing the game day experience for our fans.”
Marchewka was responsible for all pre-game giveaways, first pitches, National Anthem singers, t-shirt tosses, post-game entertainment, and more. Because fan engagement was one of her top responsibilities, she was one of the first faces you’d see upon entering Sahlen Field.
“I always felt like I was made to be here,” said Marchewka. “It can be difficult to get into the sports industry as a woman. Not only did I get my foot in the door, I got the experience I need to continue in the field and make this my career path. The experience has been invaluable, and I am thankful I got it.” Mendes agrees.
“It’s unbelievable to see the fans here in the stadium,” he said. “Working in the sports environment and being on the field doing promotions has been a really good experience. I will build on what I’ve learned here and keep growing professionally. Not all interns get this kind of knowledge. It has been a huge benefit.”
Mike Buczkowski, President of Baseball Operations and a member of Villa Maria’s Board of Trustees, said, “I’ve been working here since this ballpark opened. Interns are an integral part of our front office team. What we have found over the years is that interns provide great assistance to us, and it’s beneficial to them. They bring energy to the staff and the ballpark, and they bring us ideas. As college students, they always have ideas about keeping our fan base in tune.”

As Villa Maria College presses on in its quest to become the hub of the creative economy in Western New York, it does so with a renewed dedication to its own art programs and to increasing their availability within the community.
Last year, Villa Maria launched its inaugural Artist in Residence program. As part of the program, a cohort of Digital Media and Communications (DMC) students had the opportunity to work alongside the award-winning media arts production company, Get Fokus’d Productions, led by Aitina Fareed-Cooke.
Get Fokus’d guided Villa Maria’s students as they developed and rolled out a digital marketing plan for their 2024 “Tales from the Porch IV: Art is a Language” series.
“Working with Aitina and Get Fokus’d Productions enhanced the DMC student experience in so many beneficial ways,” said Jessica Longson, Assistant Professor of Digital Media and Communications. “The team’s hands-on approach allowed students to work on and contribute to projects that had high visibility and reception out in the community— which means they added new experiences to their resumes and developed professional pieces to feature in their portfolios.”
As their involvement with the project progressed, students had the opportunity to
create a significant network of industry professionals at both a local and national level. Plus, their experiences allowed them to develop a broader perspective of their field of study and the ways in which it can be applied in the real world.
“Students also had the opportunity to get out of the classroom and into the field," continued Longson. "They helped Aitina and her team cover events out in the community and created engaging digital content using different media. Aitina’s leadership and educational approach not only supported the mission of the College but inspired DMC students to push themselves and focus on what they
want out of their college experience while learning and practicing highly tangible skills along the way,” concluded Longson.
Students were each assigned filmed interview footage and were tasked with making notes along the footage timeline that allowed the editors to quickly access footage in a shorter amount of time. They did so using Frame.io, a storage and editing platform, that is frequently used in professional settings.
The DMC cohort also helped the Get Fokus’d team prepare and run interview sessions for Fareed-Cooke's “Tales from the Porch” series.
They worked collaboratively to
come up with the interview questions and then interviewed Fareed-Cooke in person. As the rest of the interviews took place, students were present to take photographs, help set up the stage props, do some stage design, and operate cameras. Onji Brown, '25, acted as Project Manager and was responsible for ensuring the event ran smoothly.
“My experience with Aitina and Get Fokus’d Productions was enlightening,” said Brown. “They have strengthened my education by allowing me to work with the real thing. As a Digital Media and Communications major, being able to use the knowledge I

already have and combine it with the things I am getting taught allows me to not only execute what needs to be done, but also show my creativity. The technology we’re working with is everywhere, so as I work towards my career path, I am getting comfortable using the equipment in a comfortable environment without judgment.”
When the 12-week program was complete, the Digital Media and Communications students gained a greater understanding of communication, logistics, social media management, content creation, collaboration, storytelling through digital media, and more.
THE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM BROUGHT AN INCREASED VIBRANCY TO CAMPUS, AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO PROVIDING OUR STUDENTS WITH MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED WITH THE PROFESSIONALS.
While the Artist in Residence program was an undeniably valuable experience for the students who were directly involved, its impact was felt across campus.
“The Artist in Residence program brought an increased vibrancy to campus, and we look forward to providing our students with more opportunities to get involved with the professionals,” said Dr. Giordano, Villa Maria’s President. “We want students to have the opportunity to meet artists in their field of study and learn more about the profession. We hope to bring more diverse, creative individuals from a variety of artistic fields to campus to continue to work with our students and our community partners.
On the heels of the Artist in Residence experience came another new program, a visiting artist series. Aptly named “Catalyst,” the series will bring a trio of renowned artists to campus by the end of the 2024-2025 academic year.
“Catalyst” began in September 2024 with artist Mark Dion, whose work exploring environmental politics, scientific authority, and the relationship between science and art has earned him widespread acclaim and a place in contemporary art history. Dion kicked off his visit with a printmaking workshop that was only available to Villa Maria’s students.
Part two of his visit welcomed the Western New York Community to campus to hear him speak.
“The visiting artist series presents a unique opportunity for students to learn from and interface with artists operating at the highest level in the industry,” said Kyle Butler, Assistant Professor of Fine Arts at Villa Maria College. “For students pursuing a career in the arts, a distinct difficulty is finding ways of tangibly applying their creative interests toward finding a place in contemporary culture and in the creative economy. The grander art world can seem opaque, intimidating, or distant. Through personal experiences with artists who have navigated that world successfully, we hope that students will develop a stronger grounding and direction in their own work.”
The series continued in October with a visit from Arghavan Khosravi. Khosravi is an Iranian-born American visual artist and illustrator. She is known for her three-dimensional paintings with works that cross between the traditions of European Renaissance and Persian miniature; with themes of freedom, exile, and empowerment.
Khosravi met with senior Fine Art students who are in the middle of completing their thesis projects. In addition to viewing their work, she toured their studios and spoke with each of them, offering fresh perspectives and encouragement.
Like Dion before her, Khosravi spoke to the College and Western New York Communities. She led a discussion regarding the ways in which women are typically portrayed in ancient Persian miniature paintings. She asked the audience to consider how the iconography of women in subservient or secondary roles that lacked social significance has shaped Iranian gender politics today.
"Catalyst” will conclude with a visit from Summer Wheat in the fall of 2025.
Villa Maria’s visiting artist lecture series is made possible with the support of Mike and Josette Taheri.
Because my aunt is a Felician sister, I have known about Villa Maria College for my whole life. However, it wasn’t until I joined Villa Maria’s Board of Trustees in 2022 that I really understood the true importance of the work the College is doing. The welcoming, inclusive environment and the individualized support services Villa Maria offers to all its students are just the tip of the iceberg.
When President Giordano shared plans to transform the Library Building into a 21st Century academic center, I knew it was a project that I wanted to support.
The Scott Bieler Center for Academic Excellence will bring library services, academic advising, tutoring, IT support, career services, internship coordination, mental health counseling, the Achieve Program for Students with Learning Differences, and more under one roof.
This modern, state-of-the-art space will make it easier than ever for students to receive the support services they need to help them succeed academically and professionally. Students will want to be in the Bieler Center, whether it’s to study independently, collaborate, or just catch their breath between classes...and we can’t wait to have them!
Our fundraising campaign kicked off with a lead gift from Scott Bieler. Now, thanks to funding through grants, gifts from many friends of Villa Maria College, and my fellow trustees, we have reached 93% of our $2,800,000 goal. You can help to bring us to 100% plus for this very special project that will serve current and future Villa Maria College students.
