LIKE ANY BUSINESS LEADER, I BELIEVE IN
THE POWER OF A GREAT MISSION. It conveys what’s important to an organization while articulating the direction forward. Developing leaders for a better world guides all that we do at the Villanova School of Business, along with a commitment to truth, community, love and service. From our faculty to our staff, students, alumni and partners, there’s a shared purpose that drives us and ultimately leads to great things, especially in the last year. I’m proud to report strong performance during the 2018-2019 academic year as measured by applications, enrollments, outcomes and rankings. Equally important, though, is the substance behind those numbers. We continue to shine through our faculty, staff, research and programs that enable us to deliver upon the mission every day. You will find many impressive examples throughout this report. With any mission, there’s always more to do. In the coming months, I will elaborate on new initiatives from our strategic plan that fulfill our mission in new ways. In particular, we will focus on advancing student competencies for the future marketplace; providing a more diverse, equitable and inclusive community within VSB; and investing in research that impacts the classroom and the world. A mission breathes life into an organization and knowing there are more possibilities inspires us. As always, I thank you for your ongoing support and commitment to VSB.

RESEARCH EXCELLENCE
Symposiums on globalization and trade wars, a nationally recognized interdisciplinary research lab, and a gathering of leading finance scholars are among the highlights of the expanding research enterprise at VSB.
THE FUTURE OF GLOBALIZATION VSB hosted a research symposium to explore the impact of recent changes in the global economic and political landscape and what it means for continued global economic integration and engagement. The event drew nearly 100 students, faculty and staff from Villanova and other universities, and featured presentations by leading scholars and commentators, including Robert Lawrence, the Albert L. Williams Professor of International Trade and Investment at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.
TRADE WARS: WHO WINS, WHO LOSES The Elenore and Robert F. Moran Sr. Center for Global Leadership within VSB along with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences conducted a panel discussion with leading scholars from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University to examine a range of trade-related issues and where global trade policy is heading in the coming years.

LAB FOR ADVANCEMENT OF INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH OPENS The Lab for the Advancement of Interdisciplinary Research (LAIR) promotes collaboration and innovation between students and faculty, both within VSB and among the larger Villanova University community. In its inaugural year, LAIR received recognition as one the 2019 Innovations That Inspire, as awarded by the AACSB Business Education Alliance.
Lab Growth Center for Marketing and Consumer Insights (CMCI) was awarded a Procter & Gamble Higher Education Grant to fund the creation of a retail lab within LAIR. The grant will also support the purchase of cutting-edge Tobii dynamic eye-tracking hardware and software, which will be used in the retail lab in partnership with the College of Engineering.
VSB HOSTED MID-ATLANTIC RESEARCH CONFERENCE (MARC) IN FINANCE The 14th Annual MARC conference drew distinguished finance scholars from around the world as well as representatives from FINRA and the Federal Reserve Board of Governors to discuss recent papers on financial institutions, corporate finance, financial markets, investments and trading. The conference also featured a keynote address on the evolution of ESG investing, delivered by Laura Starks, Charles E. & Sarah M. Seay Regents’ Chair in Finance at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin.

PROGRAM INNOVATIONS & PARTNERSHIPS EXPANDING PARTNERSHIPS The Center for Church Management recently established new partnerships with the dioceses of Bridgeport (Conn.), Nashville (Tenn.) and Cleveland (Ohio) to offer the Master of Science in Church Management (MSCM) program to clergy, church leaders, administrators and volunteers. Ranked No. 2 in the nation among online graduate business programs by U.S. News & World Report this year, MSCM is a distinctive program focused on applying business fundamentals to support the advancement of faith-based organizations.
REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENTS
The Daniel M. DiLella Center for Real Estate introduced a real estate development minor for students from the College of Engineering. This cross-campus program capitalizes on an existing certificate program that takes a multi-disciplinary look at the challenges with developing and building communities.
GLOBAL GROWTH
The Moran Center for Global Leadership launched the inaugural Maymester program in Sydney, Australia, where students in the Global Political Economy of the Asia-Pacific Program engaged in a cultural immersion by living and studying in the region.
10 DEAN’S REPORT
We added new programs in several fields this year with a continued focus on applying theory to practice while also adopting a more interdisciplinary approach to curricula, mirroring the trends within research and the professional world.
ACCOUNTING FOR MORE
This year, we announced an expansion of the KPMG Master of Accounting with Data and Analytics Program to include a tax concentration starting in fall 2020. VSB is one of nine universities offering the KPMG graduate program but one of only three selected to offer the tax concentration. Students will gain hands-on experience managing the leading-edge technology and analytics within the context of accounting and tax to enable them to add more value in this evolving field. Enhanced Master of Accounting Graduates First Class In May 2019, VSB graduated the first class of students who enrolled in the enhanced Master of Accounting with Data Analytics—with exceptionally high marks. The program, which blends the study of accounting, technology and analytics with a heavy emphasis on hands-on learning, graduated 100% of its inaugural class, of which 96% secured full-time placement by graduation.

BRAND GROWTH
Building and growing a brand is as important in higher education as in business to remain competitive and attract those who embrace our mission and want to advance it. Recently VSB evaluated the strength of our brand relative to the marketplace—analyzing not only our strategy and messaging but the needs and expectations of prospective undergraduate and graduate students. This work yielded valuable information that will refine our strategic plan.
POSITIVE EXPOSURE Several faculty now serve as contributors to leading business publications, highlighting the great talent and ideas within VSB. Forbes.com now features articles from Dean Joyce Russell and Dr. Charles (Ray) Taylor, the John A. Murphy Professor of Marketing, along with long-time Forbes.com contributor Stephen Andriole, the Thomas G. Labrecque Professor of Business Technology. Additionally, Meg Luo, associate professor of Finance & Real Estate, is a regular contributor to U.S. News & World Report.

STRONG CONNECTIONS
The Augustinian commitment to community sets VSB apart from other business schools. It’s most evident in the ongoing commitment from alumni and employee partners who routinely share their time and resources to advance the VSB experience, but it doesn’t end there. We also strive to strengthen our community through inclusion and service.
FUNDRAISING
INVESTING IN FUTURE LEADERS
Financial support enables VSB to enhance our learning environment, elevate our profile as a producer of groundbreaking research and enrich the overall educational experience. VSB raised a collective $13 million across endowments, restricted gifts and unrestricted funds that helped fund strategic efforts to grow technology, enhance our physical space and provide fiscal support to graduate students.
What better way to build future business leaders than to let them explore how we build the environment where we live and work? Over two weeks last summer, the DiLella Center for Real Estate hosted a group of 28 high-achieving high school students from underrepresented communities to learn more about career paths in commercial real estate, while previewing college life and the possibilities that Villanova offers.
SUPPORTING WOMEN IN BUSINESS
ENGAGING WITH YOUNG ALUMNI
Within the broader business community, VSB again took a lead role in supporting women’s professional success as a sponsor of the 2018 Pennsylvania Conference for Women. One of the largest women’s events in the nation, the annual conference draws more than 12,000 participants. Dean Russell was invited to speak to over 1,200 women on the topic of negotiation and also met individually with women to offer career advice while the VSB team spoke with more than 800 women about our programs.
This year, we launched our new Undergraduate Young Alumni Advisory Council. Made up of 25 members from the classes of 2002 to 2016, the Council met twice this year with VSB leadership who sought advice and feedback on important strategic initiatives within VSB, trends impacting business and opportunities to keep young alumni engaged in the future of VSB.
