DEAN’S REPORT
MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
As I reflect on the 2021–2022 academic year, I am as encouraged as ever by our Villanova School of Business community. VSB has continued to create and lead initiatives in the realm of business education and research that support the University’s Augustinian Catholic mission and values. We have been steadfast in our commitment to leaders who will live our values of Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas each and every day.
This report provides an overview of our accomplishments from the past academic year, highlighting how VSB has continued to build a vibrant, supportive, student-centered academic community.
Now in my seventh year as VSB’s Helen and William O’Toole Dean, to continue serving the VSB community during its 100th anniversary year. What an exciting time for all of us to recognize the rich legacy that our alumni have created. I look forward to the ongoing success of VSB and I am confident that our collective success—as well as the success of each individual within our community—will grow. Thank you for your support and contributions to our history and future.

EXPANDING STUDENT EXPERIENCES
VSB continued to support students through the Davis Fund for Student Experiences, which funded learning opportunities beyond the classroom for both undergraduate and graduate students. Thanks to the generosity of Kim and James C. Davis ‘81 VSB, the Davis Fund advances VSB’s long-standing commitment to experiential learning by providing resources that enable students to pursue opportunities that push their academic and professional growth to a much higher level.
This fund supports initiatives that extend beyond the curriculum, including but not limited to global opportunities, independent studies, nonprofit service, conferences, case studies and other experiences that reflect the University’s mission and values. The Davis Fund is one of numerous initiatives established as a result of the historic $50 million gift made through the Davis Family Foundation in 2017, which will ensure that VSB students have access to the most up-to-date resources and opportunities for generations to come.
VSB was able to fund many initiatives, including student participation in virtual conferences, book clubs and skill-building opportunities, as well as supplement some living expenses while students had unpaid or low-paying internships. Last year, we funded over 800 student experiences and awarded over $270,000 to undergraduate and graduate students.

VSB’S STRATEGIC PLAN
Villanova’s Strategic Plan, Rooted. Restless., is an ambitious effort to guide the University forward over the next decade. Rooted in our Augustinian Catholic values, and restless in our desire to ignite change, the plan builds on our strengths and invests in critical areas to enhance the Villanova experience for our entire community.
The strategic plan for the Villanova School of Business, shaped by the priorities of Rooted. Restless., is focused on delivering an unparalleled business education and developing business leaders for a better world. As we continue our commitment to these efforts, we have made great strides in furthering research
productivity and the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
RESEARCH PRODUCTIVITY
VSB has continued to implement its strategic planning goals related to research. Overall, total research by VSB faculty has increased from the previous five-year window of time.
VSB engaged in formal research collaboration with more than 55 of our talented students through various campus initiatives.
We were also able to host the following virtual conferences:
• The MARC Finance Conference
• VSB Research Insights Symposium
In conjunction with the Journal of Management Studies, the “Preparing for the Future of Work” symposium featured Jonathan Doh, PhD, associate dean of Research and Global Engagement; Herbert G. Rammrath Endowed Chair in International Business; and professor, Management & Operations, as convenor; faculty from top institutions; presentations by Jacqueline O’Reilly, co-author of Work in the Digital Age, and Paul Leonardi, co-author of The Digital Mindset: What It Really Takes to Thrive in the Age of Data, Algorithms, and AI ; and a panel that included Peter Rodriguez, dean of Rice University’s Jones School of Business.
Hiring and Retaining World-Class Researchers
Generous gifts to the dean’s fund allows VSB to engage in research activities that directly support the VSB strategic plan, as well as Villanova University’s Strategic Plan, Rooted. Restless. Through hiring, developing and retaining world-class researchers, VSB can create an environment that supports exceptional faculty research. More than 40 VSB faculty members receive support in their research endeavors every summer, and this is one of the main reasons VSB is able to attract and retain top teacher-scholars.
Media Relations
Our faculty engage in applied research— research with impact—and are regularly featured in such publications as Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNBC, and the Associated Press. They are recognized as national experts in their fields and are sought-after commentators.
The 4th Annual VSB Research Day
Undergraduate students and faculty presented their research work in a poster symposium.
STRENGTHENING DEI
As part of our strategic efforts to continue to make VSB a welcoming environment for all community members, Dean Russell appointed an associate dean for DEI—Aronté Bennett, PhD, associate professor, Marketing & Business Law— and hired Zakiya Newton, EdD, as the assistant director of VSB’s Office of DEI.
This office has offered opportunities for faculty, staff and students, including inclusive classroom training, inclusive hiring training, allyship in the workplace and a diversity panel, to name a few. Other activities included:
• Formalizing Heritage Month celebrations and created opportunities for the VSB community to engage in cultural growth.
• Creating and maintaining membership, partnership and engagement in organizations working to help shape the landscape for peer and aspirational schools.
• Continuing to raise awareness and elevate the VSB brand with our commitment to DEI through various presentations at conferences and in media outreach.
• Managing a VSB Course Materials fund to provide financial assistance to VSB students for books and supplemental course materials, which has benefited many students.
• Actively participating in the interview process for all VSB faculty candidates, and creating job posting profiles with the PhD Project, HBCU Connect and Latinos in Higher Education.
STRONG CONNECTIONS
SPONSORSHIPS AND SIGNATURE EVENTS
We continue to strategically engage in sponsorships with organizations such as Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Mid-Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Administration (MAACBA), Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the Forum for Executive Women, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, the Philadelphia Business Journal and the Academy of Management.
In fall 2021, VSB again invested in sponsoring the virtual PA Conference for Women. We received over 1.4 million impressions due to our sponsorship of one of the largest women’s events in the nation. With Glenn Close and Brené Brown as the keynote speakers, the conference sold out and garnered national media attention. Dean Russell and Aronté Bennett, PhD, associate dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, recorded and offered video “Learning Bursts” on the topics of negotiation and allyship. We also offered career counseling with Dean Russell and our other senior women leaders, which was a popular attraction at our virtual booth, and we helped women with career questions and advice. The PA Conference for Women also has a significant commitment to promoting underrepresented women and diversity, equity and inclusion, which aligns with our strategic plan.
In April 2022, we hosted the VSB Stakeholder’s Summit, with more than 150 attendees, honoring Herbert G. Rammrath ’57 with the Bartley Medallion and a dozen Above and Beyond Alumni Award recipients from each VSB Advisory Council.
VSB hosted an Academic Excellence Ceremony for both Undergraduate and Graduate Students during the 2022 Commencement activities.
COMMUNITY AND EXTERNAL OUTREACH
To continue the important work of encouraging women and underrepresented minorities to pursue a business education, the assistant dean for Community & External Outreach, Cathy Toner, continued programming with select community and University partners. As an example, we again held a “Mini-Business Conference” with Agnes Irwin School, an all-girls college preparatory school. Our faculty taught sessions virtually on several business topics, including marketing, management, technology and finance. The students use that knowledge to create their own businesses and business plans.
We continue to hold a two-week Summer Business Academy in partnership with Villanova’s Center for Access Success and Achievement (CASA). For this year’s program, we partnered with Wawa to give the students a real business problem to solve. The students took a field trip to Wawa headquarters, where they met with senior women leaders and worked in teams with a VSB alumni mentor to develop solutions for one of Wawa’s supply chain problems as a result of the pandemic. In addition, we delivered sessions to the students
on innovation and creativity, and taught them about finance and ethics and how they impact business. The capstone of the program was the solutions the students presented to us and our Wawa partners.
The College Essay Review program continues to grow. This year, with approximately 45 volunteers, we reviewed 147 essays from 123 students across the Philadelphia area. We were able to review and give feedback to students from across Philadelphia’s public high schools and provide support for those students wanting to attend college.
We are continuing to expand our offerings and partnerships, working with Cristo Rey High School in Philadelphia on a mentoring program that will partner VSB students with high school students, and we’re hosting the YMCA Achievers program throughout the school year. We continue to host various high school groups to come to Bartley and spend the day visiting classes and engaging with our students.
ENHANCE THE VSB BRAND
Building and growing a brand is as important in higher education as it is in business to remain competitive and enhance our national rankings, as well as to attract those who embrace our mission and values.
POSITIVE EXPOSURE
The VSB Communication and Marketing Team promotes the scholarship and expertise of our faculty and staff, as well as the many success stories of our students and alumni. During the past 12 months, VSB has achieved more than 1,500 media hits generating over 2.3 billion media impressions. This has included prestigious outlets like the Associated Press, Bloomberg Businessweek, CNN, Forbes, NBC News, The New York Times, NPR, Reuters , U.S. News & World Report and The Wall Street Journal.
We also placed one additional VSB faculty member in a regular contributor role on a national media website. Corinne Post, PhD, the Fred J. Springer Endowed Chair in Business Leadership, is our newest regular contributor on Forbes.com. She joins Dean Russell, PhD; Ray Taylor, PhD, the John A. Murphy Professor of Marketing; Steve Andriole, PhD, the Thomas A. Labrecque Professor of Business Technology; Noah Barsky, PhD, associate professor, Accounting & Information Systems; and Aronté Bennett, PhD, associate dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and
associate professor, Marketing & Business Law, who are regular Forbes.com contributors.
We continued our award-winning Inspiring Minds podcast series, a VSB faculty research podcast in which exceptional students are paired with our world-class faculty to discuss their recent research, thus making it more accessible to the marketplace. Since the series launched in 2016, we have uploaded 41 podcast episodes with a combined total of more than 12,500 listens and 520,000 social media impressions.
SOCIAL MEDIA
The VSB Communication and Marketing team continues to build our brand through our social media presence and engagement. We hosted more than a dozen corporate and student society takeovers, shared virtual programming, highlighted student resources, and increased posts regarding VSB’s commitment to DEI.
Our total audience across all platforms increased 15% and our average engagement rate per post increased more than 60%.
WEB COMMUNICATION
To continue building the VSB brand, we continued the “Making an Impact” series that highlights members of the VSB community who are making an impact in their organizations, communities and the world. VSB’s strategic plan messaging was also carefully woven into messaging throughout the site to convey a consistent message for all stakeholders around VSB’s mission, vision and strategic goals.
We continuously source exceptional stories from our community to share in marketing efforts. Please contact us at vsbcommunicationsandmarketing@villanova.edu to share your story!
FUNDRAISING ACHIEVEMENTS DEAN’S FUND FOR STRATEGIC INITIATIVES
We are so grateful for the financial support we received from numerous stakeholders, especially our alumni. Financial support is critical for VSB to enhance our learning environment, elevate our profile as a producer of groundbreaking research and enrich the overall educational experience.
During the past year, Dean Russell worked with our Development team for a successful year that generated $11.1 million in contributions across endowments, restricted gifts and unrestricted funds. The Dean’s Fund for Strategic Initiatives raised $1.1 million to elevate our faculty, enhance our learning environment, engage our students and enrich our community.
VSB’s most significant gifts were a $2.5 million gift from the H. Hovnanian Family Foundation to endow a chair in Real Estate; $1 million to name the Dean’s Suite and support Finance research
and a student-managed fund for fixed-income trading from Joseph Delaney ‘85 VSB and Nancy Smith ‘85 VSB; two separate $500,000 anonymous gifts for the DiLella Center for Real Estate; significant gift to the Dean’s Fund for Strategic Initiatives from Christopher T. Gheysens ’93 VSB; and multiple gifts of more than $100,000 to support scholarships for VSB students, among other things.
Dean Russell traveled to meet with our many alumni and employers and also continued to take advantage of opportunities to connect with alumni and donors virtually. She was also able to host events with major donors, companies and Villanova clubs throughout the year. Dean Russell spent time with alumni around the world and is very grateful for their contributions of time, talent, and treasure, all of which greatly enrich the VSB student experience and community, and further strengthen VSB’s international reputation.
This fund provides the Dean of the Villanova School of Business the flexibility to address the college’s greatest and most pressing needs as well as to act quickly on opportunities that can further VSB’s reputation and success. It allows VSB to be entrepreneurial and compete with other top-tier business schools. Gifts to the fund support key initiatives such as technology and classroom upgrades, opportunities to support our world-class teacher-scholars, superior student services through the Clay Center and the Centers of Excellence, and funding to increase marketing and communications efforts to enhance VSB’s national prominence. The fund also supports mission-based programming, such as the Center for Church Management.
