FROM THE PUBLISHER The holidays are supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. Coming together with friends and family for feasts, drinks, football and catching up, being merry and bright, spreading kindness to strangers, and helping others all before the year’s end. This year, however, is different. Instead of spreading kindness, there is hate and violence. Instead of cheer, there is anger and fear. And instead of coming together, we are a nation divided. Longtime friends have become foes. People are being forced to choose sides. Complete strangers are fighting in street. So many people are asking, “How did we get here, and how do we get back?” To be united, there needs to be leadership. That is how our nation was formed. If our leaders are fighting, bullying, or discriminating against organizations, how are we supposed to react? How are we to rise above it? By becoming the leaders ourselves. Robert Kennedy stated it best, “Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” We need to be that one man or woman to lead and set forth hope for our youth that will soon be leaders of their own before this country is destroyed.
gone viral. If people haven’t seen it yet, they have probably heard of it and have it on their TV-binge list. Coincidently, even this show reflects the moral concept; people or androids stand up against the violence to instill hope for what they rightfully deserve. Angela Sarafyran was part of that world as one of the robotic characters and shares with us her experience being a part of fantasy world in our exclusive interview. In the real world, there are still people out there, especially in Seattle, creating hope. Those goodwill Seattleites are taking their hardships and developing nonprofit organizations to help fight a cause to make other lives better. It was hard to narrow down, but we chose four to shine the spotlight on and inform you how you can help as well. I do what I do because I want to be someone who sets an example. It’s important to me to publish positive topics and avoid any negativity or bullying. It’s also essential to show my gratitude. So even though it may not feel like the holidays, I am still planning on celebrating and would love for you to celebrate with me. I want to invite you to me join on December 11th at Quality Athletics at the Ville Magazine holiday party featuring live reindeer from Reindeer Express. So come and spread good cheer and kindness that our country so desperately needs. Happy Holidays, Seattle!
In times of hardship, people tend to have the desire to escape - flight or fight response. Perhaps that is why the Canadian immigration website crashed the day after the election. Other ways people escape is tuning out of reality and tuning into fantasy. Perhaps that is why HBO’s series Westworld has

No matter your age, it is impossible not to appreciate the dedication, craftsmanship, and creativity that go into extravagant light displays. Luckily, the Seattle area offers an incredible selection of displays and neighborhoods that cannot be missed this holiday season. Whether you are planning a trip with family, friends, or a special someone, these holiday light displays will knock off your holiday fuzzy socks.
CANDY CANE LANE December 3, 2016 - January 1, 2017; 4:00-11:00 pm daily North of Ravenna Boulevard at 21st Avenue Northeast, Seattle, WA 98105
Candy Cane Lane has been taking place at NE Park Road in Ravenna since the 1950s. You could easily say this holiday light show is a little piece of Seattle history. Expert advice is to park a few blocks away and take your time walking through the beautiful neighborhood. One of the best houses last year gave visitors the ability to control its decorations, lights, and snow machine with a voice-controlled Amazon Echo. With no charge to see, you can’t beat Candy Cane Lane to get in the holiday spirit. Candy Cane Lane Seattle l Copyright Wonderlane / Flickr
FANTASY LIGHTS November 24, 2016 - January 1, 2017; 5:30-9:00 pm daily 24909 Hub Dr, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284
Although it’s a bit of a trek to Spanaway Park, this two-mile drive-thru light display is definitely worth it. From the warmth and comfort of your vehicle, you will stare in awe at the 300+ light displays that surround Spanaway Lake. Some of the most popular attractions include the pink teddy bear, the giant dragon, and Santa blasting out of a cannon. This is a popular weekend adventure so it’s a good idea to attend on a weekday or be prepared to wait a bit. The cost per car is around $15.

Hello Mr. Roboto written by Charity Mainville l photo cluise.com
It has been predicted that the artificial intelligence industry will skyrocket in 2017. As it advances, artificial intelligence will incorporate emotional intelligence and the skills to replace jobs across the world, making life a lot more convenient. Civilization may now spend time doing what it loves instead of what it must. Self-driving cars, self-operating machines, robot housekeepers, and robot lovers are being released this upcoming year, and that’s only the icing on the cake.
MINI ME In 2013, Kirobo the humanoid was sent into space to keep Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata company while aboard the International Space Station for over 18 months. Starting next year in Japan, he will be shrunk down to only 4” tall and available to keep you company on Earth while driving. Rightfully named Kirobo Mini, it can respond to human emotions while engaging in conversation and moving its head and hands. It can also detect if the driver is getting drowsy and tell the stereo to start playing songs at high volume. For $390, drivers can buy a Kirobo Mini and place their new best friend in the cup holder of their car. www.toyota-europe.com
FREE FOLD Folding laundry is a necessary yet tedious task. However, you may now be able to give this chore to a machine. In 2017, FoldiMate, a robotic clothes-folding machine, is due to be released. It promises to not only fold your clothes but also steam the vestments to reduce wrinkles. Additionally, FoldiMate provides the option to spritz the clothes with a pleasant scent. Desired buyers can register on FoldiMate’s website to be notified when it goes on sale for $750 – $800. www.foldimate.com

TECH SPECS HOLY MOLEY If you don’t have time to cook but long for a home cooked meal, then start saving your pennies for Moley. For $92,000, you can have your own full-time robotic kitchen chef that cooks and cleans up after. Projected for release in 2018, Moley will cook you one of its programmed recipes with the touch of a button. Celebrity chefs like Gordan Ramsay and Emeril Lagasse are not fans, stating to make a great meal you must use human senses, such as smell and taste, that a robot cannot replicate. However, Moley’s CEO claims the more the robot cooks, the more feedback is received from the diner. The robot will quickly “learn” what tastes best. www.moley.com
ROBOCOP Dubai police are planning to hire a new cop to its force – a robot cop, sometime in 2017. Currently, there is only set to one release, but the goal is to intergrade a full force by 2020. This robot cop will be far from the Robocop’s, Alex Murphy, but that doesn’t mean it will be in the future. For now, the Dubai robot cop can salute, shake hands, scan faces, and allow people to report crime and pay fines for traffic violations through its touchscreen. They are working to have it follow voice commands and spot people from meters away, approach them, and greet them by the GITEX Expo 2020.
SEXY TIME It is stated that by 2050, human and robot relationships will outweigh human to human. Creater of Real Doll, Abyss Creations, is jumpstarting that trend in 2017. By next year, people will be able to buy a humanlike lover for $15,000. The sex robot will feature heating elements to simulate body warmth, warmed genitalia areas, and electronic sensors so the robots can react with artificial pleasure as their owner/lover caresses their synthetic skin. For those who enjoy a little dirty talk, the robots will also talk to their lovers in an attractive, sexy voice.

ANIMAL INSTINCT
Collaring Technology written by Charity Mainville
New products are constantly being invented to better our communication and enhance our ability to track our health through devices like a small wristwatch. As much as society views their dogs as part of the family, it should come as no surprise that we would develop the same level of technology for the collars of our four-legged best friends.
COLLARING INNOVATION The LINK AKC Smart Dog Collar received the “2017 Best of Innovation Award” at last year’s CES. Its advanced GPS tracking not only locates your lost pet but also creates a digital safe place around your home to control how far the animal can venture. If it’s dark outside and you can’t see your pup, turn on its remote-controlled light. In addition, it tracks your dog’s activity, provides activity level recommendations, and informs you if the environment is too hot or cold for your furry companion. www.linkakc.com ($149)
COLLARING HEALTH Your dog’s health is the most important aspect of living a long life. With Petpace Smart, you can make sure your dog is feeling its best. The integrated Health Monitoring Service tracks body behavior and abnormalities, such as body temperature, pulse rate, heart rate variability, and unhealthy respiratory rate changes. It also analyzes your dog’s body position for injuries or unknown pain and helps with weight loss through monitored activity. Best of all, it immediately alerts you and your vet at any sign of trouble. www.petpace.com ($149.50)
COLLARING MOOD Inupathy is a dog harness that shows you your dog’s current mood. The mood is estimated through heart rate variation and is shown by colored LED lights on the harness. For now, the only lighted emotions translated are blue for calm, red for excitement, white for concentration, and rainbow for happiness. Its noise-canceling technology isolates the dog’s heartbeat and tracks its reactions to stimuli such as food, games, people, and toys. Test it yourself after its launch at the end of this year. www.inupathy.com ($249) 16 l VILLE l THE HOLIDAY ISSUE
ANIMAL INSTINCT
COLLARING INTELLIGENCE WÜF is a smart collar to make your dog smart. It’s not just for tracking but also learning. Similar to LINK, it features GPS tracking, digital fencing, and activity monitoring. What makes WÜF stand apart is its two-way audio that listens and sends you alerts if your dog is barking, crying, or growling. It even allows you to respond with commands from anywhere in the world. The bite-proof, waterproof and shockproof collar also includes small training programs and games to keep your furry friend entertained. www.getwuf.com ($164)
COLLARING COMMUNICATION How many times a day do you talk to your dog and wish it could talk back? Nordic Society for Invention and Discovery (NSID) in Sweden may be granting your wish soon. No More Woof is a device that will translate animal thoughts into English. The product is only in the research phase but has already received a lot of attention — even Volvo did a commercial about it. EEG censoring, micro computing, and a special braincomputer interface translates the brainwaves of dogs into comprehensive thoughts. NSID explains that animal brains are less complex than humans and their signal patterns are more distinct, which makes them easier to distinguish. Even though it’s still a work in progress, NSID hopes to soon share a development kit. Interested? Just email them at info@nordicinvention.com and they will send you one when it's available. www.nomorewoof.com ($65 – $1,200)

Seasonal Sweets written by Lauren Adam
‘Tis the season for indulgence, and there is no denying it’s everywhere this time of year. From holiday parties, visiting with family, and yearly traditions with friends, it’s always nice to share something sweet. Whether you decide to tempt your loved ones with a seasonal delight from the Dahlia Bakery or treat yourself to a holiday dessert, the gift of festive indulgence is never far away.
CORDILLERA CHOCOLATE TRIFLE Purple Café and Wine Bar Traditional trifles are made with real egg custard poured over sponge cake, soaked in sherry and fruit, then topped with whipped cream. Purple Café does it right with their cordillera chocolate trifle. Chocolate pavé cake and brown buttercream are drenched with chocolate custard, drizzled with salted caramel, and dusted with fried hazelnuts. Wash it down with a perfect pairing of Spanish César Florido ‘Pasas’ Moscatel Sherry. 1225 4th Ave, Seattle, WA 98101 l www.purplecafe.com
STOUT GINGERBREAD CAKE Mistral Kitchen From elaborately decorated houses to cookies and gingerbread loaves, this German tradition has become a classic holiday dessert. While you can find the best gingerbread display in the city at the Sheraton’s Gingerbread Village starting November 22, Mistral Kitchen has the best gingerbread dessert. Their popular stout gingerbread cake is served with eggnog crème anglaise sauce, candied kumquat, juicy poached quince fruit, and molasses-flavored muscovado ice cream. Get it with the 2009 Kracher Riesling Beerenauslese Cuvee. After a long day of shopping, breathe in the sweetness of the holiday season. 2020 Westlake Ave, Seattle, WA 98121 l mistral-kitchen.com
BRIOCHE BREAD PUDDING Marjorie Restaurant Bread pudding is made by layering bread and custard then baking. The first bread pudding can be traced back to the 11th century when the lower classes would scrape together stale bread for a warm and comforting holiday treat. For comfort food, there’s no better place than Marjorie. Their brioche bread pudding is made with bourbon caramel, toffee, and cream. It’s twice as nice with an after-dinner sip of Westerhall Estate Rum from Grenada. 1412 E Union St. Seattle, WA 98122 l www.marjorierestaurant.com
STACY’S KENTUCKY BOURBON PECAN PIE Dahlia Bakery You can’t go wrong with one of the seasonal specialties at this Tom Douglas bakery, famed for their decadent coconut cream pie. Try Stacy’s Kentucky Bourbon pecan pie with butter crust, blackstrap molasses, and knob creek bourbon for a sticky luxury that will make you the favorite guest at any holiday party. But that’s not all. They have plenty of holiday treats from poached pear and minced fruit tart to cookie decorating kits and Chef Brock’s holiday snack mix. 2001 4th Ave, Seattle, WA 98121 l www.dahliabakery.com l photo Ed Anderson

Joy to the World written by Lauren Adam
No matter how you choose to celebrate, this time of year brings a wealth of traditions from around the world. While each is unique in meaning, the common thread weaving our celebrations together is food and the gift of good food should be shared. Share your tradition with someone else and try a new one to honor what we have in common.
ISRAEL: LATKAS Roxy’s Diner Hanukkah celebrates the biblical tale and holiday miracle involving a one-day supply of oil that burned for eight days. For that reason many of the food served during Hanukkah is fried in oil. One of the most popular is the latke potato cake which is fried to crispy, golden perfection and served with applesauce. Get one at Roxy’s Diner in Fremont where you can get a latke sandwich, latkes and eggs, or just plain with sour cream and applesauce. 462 N 36th St, Seattle, WA 98103 l www.pastramisandwich.com
JAPAN: TOSHIKOSHI SOBA Miyabi 45th Celebrating the New Year or shogatsu is one of the most important holiday traditions in Japan. On New Year’s Eve, it’s customary for families to serve Toshikoshi Soba or buckwheat noodles which symbolize longevity and prosperity in the year to come. Your best bet for Toshikoshi Soba is Miyabi 45th which serves traditional housemade noodles and has been known to showcase Toshikoshi Soba this time of year. 2208 N 45th St, Seattle, WA 98103 l miyabi45th.com

Bakery Nouveau France’s “branch of Christmas” is similar to yule log. The lore is that Europeans would close out the winter solstice and begin anew by burning a logs garnished with holly and pinecones. Cake is filled and rolled to resemble an actual branch and then topped with edible treats that help mimic the forest floor. The cake is served after Christmas Eve midnight mass. Bakery Nouveau’s version uses sponge cake with coffee syrup, frosted with Vanilla Crème Madame, chocolate and raspberry mousse. It’s rolled and then frosted again with coffee butter cream. 137 15th Ave E, Seattle, WA 98112 l bakerynouveau.com
CHINA: DUMPLINGS Din Tai Fung It’s customary to eat both dumplings and year cake or nian gao (sticky rice cakes) to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Chinese lore suggests that the more dumplings you eat on during the celebrations, the more prosperity you will have in the New Year. Brave the lines at University Village and eat your dumplings at Din Tai Fung. The Kimchi & Pork Dumplings can make anyone feel lucky no matter how many you eat.
Tamales are a go-to holiday snack for many countries across Latin America but making them is a commitment that spans generations. The holiday ritual brings together family and friends to make the dough, stuff, and wrap these tasty traditions in corn husks or plantain leaves. The labor-intensive gathering is a time to share stories and reconnect with loved ones. The tamales are eaten from The Feast of Our Lady Guadalupe on December 12th through Three Kings Day on January 6th but especially on Christmas Eve. Recruit your friends and family to make tamales or try one at Gracia. All of the masa is ground in house from landrace corn sourced by Masienda from different states in Mexico. 5313 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107 l www.graciaseattle.com photo Gracia

COCKTAIL CULTURE
Traditional Cheer written by Lauren Adam
It’s cold. It’s dark. And historically, it’s time to warm up with a cocktail. Read why these drinks have survived the test of time, and keep custom alive by raising a glass to another year on the books.
HOT BUTTERED RUM Rumba Another spin on early America’s toddy, the hot buttered rum is said to have originated when the colonies started getting more sugar, which was used to make molasses and eventually rum. Neither the hot toddy nor hot buttered rum was originally consumed on Christmas because it was a Puritan holiday. Instead, it was saved for occasions like New Years. With endless rum options, you can’t go wrong at Rumba. 1112 Pike St, Seattle, WA 98101 l rumbaonpike.com
EGGNOG Sun Liquor Traditional nog is said to be a decedent of Britain’s medieval hot ale custard called posset. Colonial America made it their own with the prevalent amount of rum and dairy available. In Mexico, there’s a similar holiday drink called “rompope,” and Puerto Rico serves “coquito” by adding coconut milk. Don’t miss Sun Liquor’s highly sought after version. Their seasonal release is made with brandy, rum, and bourbon, and then aged 30 days. It’s only available on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. 607 Summit Ave E, Seattle, WA 98102 l www.sunliquor.com l photo below Andrea Chapman
THE SKID ROW PUNCH Canon Punch is said to have been the drink of sailors traveling through the tropics. “Meriton Latroon’s Bantam Punch” is the oldest existing punch recipe. It’s made with arrack, a form of rum produced in Asia, and distilled from the sap of palm trees. Now, punch is rooted with social intentions—you’re supposed to keep going back to get more and chat with new people when you get there. Revel in your own punch bowl at Canon. The Skid Row Punch contains apple brandy, bourbon, vanilla, becherovka, fresh citrus, and cider. It serves four. 928 12th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122 l www.canonseattle.com l photo above Canon
HOT TODDY Racbel’s Ginger Beer Rumored history states that the toddy (spirit and sugar water) originated as a cold rum drink with cinnamon and nutmeg called bumbo or grog. The concoction was the choice beverage of pirates and plantation owners in the 18th century. Later, a similar version of the drink allegedly helped Revolutionary War soldiers get some liquid courage. Get one at Rachel’s Ginger Beer with spiced honeycrisp ginger beer, whiskey, and spices, or try it the pirate way with rum. 1530 Post Alley, Seattle, WA 98101 l rachelsgingerbeer.com

Seattle Angels written by Charity Mainvile
"It only takes one person to change the world." In Seattle, there is a strong network of those “one persons” dedicating their lives to make other lives better. Here at Ville Magazine, we strive to do our part by supporting nonprofits and bringing awareness to make their dreams a reality. If it were up to us, we would help every single organization striving to make a difference – maybe someday we will. Until then, here are a few people we wanted to introduce. SUZANNE GWYNN
Founder of Ladybug House
photo Will Austin
For more than 30 years, Suzanne Gwynn has been taking care of patients—newborns to the elderly—as a critical care nurse. As she witnessed families spending their last days with loved ones and saying their goodbyes, she saw the need for an end-of-life care outside the hospital setting. That need turned into her vision for Ladybug House, a national palliative care leader for children and young adults with life-limiting illnesses that will inspire similar homes in cities and towns across the country. In July 2013, she set forth to achieve her goal and hasn’t stopped. She has been working hard to build a team, spread awareness, and raise funds in between working full time at Swedish Hospital. Today, they have raised a fourth of the $500,000 needed to hire a staff to dedicate full-time hours to get the important project up and running. In addition, they are seeking a donation of 3 to 5 acres of land where they can build a 25,000-square-foot home with 12 family suites where the entire family can be cared for. Find out the story behind the name Ladybug House, learn more about their mission, and donate at www.ladybughouse.org.

Supported charities included are Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, Angels for Angels, Sponsor A Senior, Knowledge as Power, and Redeeming Soles. Redeeming Soles provides proper footwear for the homeless and underprivileged throughout the area where Jessica serves as the Executive Director. She has helped the organization create a sustainable business model and expanded footwear distribution to thousands of people in Greater Seattle region. When she’s not busy assisting Redeeming Soles or running her company, she heads up Young Nonprofit Leaders Organization (YNLO) that she founded. Here, nonprofit leaders and organizations come together to help build the community. TERA MARTIN
Founder of Pink Gene Foundation At age 28, Tera Martin found a lump through self-examination, which turned out to be Stage 3 breast cancer. She was in the fourth generation of women in her family to develop breast cancer. Even though she was in the minority to develop it at such a young age, she tested positive for both BRCA-1 and BRCA-2, genetic mutations that increase the chances of getting breast cancer by 50-80% in their lifetime. Tera dealt with it better than most, understanding why it was happening. But the majority of women do not know if they carry the gene because they never get tested or get a mammogram, and Tera wanted to change that. In 2012, Tera founded the Pink Gene Foundation to raise funds for young women who are deemed high risk or battling breast cancer to provide them with resources for genetic testing and therapies and/or costs not covered by insurance. In addition, her foundation spreads awareness by educating women between the ages of 18-35 on prevention, genetic testing, and radiation-free screening. Last year, Pink Gene partnered with Fred Hutchinson Research Center to research the compounds that specifically target dormant disseminated tumors that give rise to metastases in long-term breast cancer survivors. This past year, Tera finally became cancer free, but that hasn’t stopped her drive for her cause. Help join the fight by donating at www.pinkgenefoundation.org.
GINGER LUKE
Founder of Ginger’s Pet Rescue Ten years ago, when Ginger Luke owned Rickshaw restaurant that delivered around the Greenwood neighborhood. Her husband made several deliveries to a particular residence and heard a dog barking every time he went. Ginger decided to investigate. The owner claimed the dog was mean and should be put down, but she offered $50 to take the dog, and he agreed. The 10-pound dachshund, Barney, had a swollen month, mites, a collar that was too tight, and had been locked in a bathroom for almost two years. After a year and half of rescuing Barney, Ginger founded Ginger’s Pet Rescue, a nonprofit that specializes in saving death-row dogs. Today, she has found homes for more than 10,000 dogs, and Ginger’s Pet Rescue is one of the largest nonprofit pet rescue organizations in Washington. It relies solely on the support of adoptions and donors to provide for approximately 100 dogs at any given time. They rescue dogs around Seattle, shelters in Texas and California, Taiwan, and Iran where dogs are viewed as filthy creatures instead of loving pets. Every rescued dog is tested by the team for behavior and personality. They are also spayed or neutered, vaccinated, given microchips, and seen by a vet before adoption. Ginger’s Pet Rescue believes every dog deserves a second chance, much like Barney who became a service dog for a deaf woman. If you are interested in adopting a dog or donating, go to www.gingerspetrescue.org for the list of adoptable pets

"I love building a relationship with my characters no matter how big or small they may be..." Growing up, you wanted a career in various fields from being a ballerina to a mechanic and of course, actress. What made you choose acting and if you weren’t acting, what was your backup career? I grew up on stage so I had the opportunity to live in my imagination and tell stories through music, dance, and plays. This was what I loved, the transformation into different characters. It started innocently as a form of play and continues to be what I now call my work, my career. I never had any form of backup. My parents always encouraged me to follow my dreams without hesitation. You’ve appeared in multiple TV shows such as Judging Amy, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and CSI:NY. What has been your favorite role and why? I love building a relationship with my characters no matter how big or small they may be in the entirety of the script. It’s the journey of discovering them and myself in the process of creating whatever role it might be. I worked with Marion Cotillard years ago on a film directed by James Gray called The Immigrant. I played her younger sister. Just a few days ago, I ran into her for the first time since the last day of filming. All those feelings flew back in a matter of seconds. James Gray’s story about these two sisters was so moving from the first page because it was about people who left everything they’d known to start a new life. My parents did this very act, and it takes so much courage and faith to do that. All they had, Ewa (Marion) and Magda (myself), was each other. I loved

the moments, no matter how brief, in the film to explore what that would be like. How different is it to play roles of a commercial versus TV or film? Commercials are almost like vignettes. They tend to be short, quick, and have to tell a complete story with a very particular message goal in a matter of seconds. Yet, the approach is really the same. I come to the material without knowing what it requires and discover in the process. You were also a big fan of cartoons. Do you want to add a voiceover of a cartoon character to your resume? I would love to. That is a dream of mine, to be able to play a cartoon character. I remember watching Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty and [hearing] those beautiful voices enlivening the pictures on the screen. They’ve left such a big impression on me even to this day. I remember it like a piece of music. You’ve starred in two films that cover the 1915 Armenian Genocide, 1915 and The Promise. As an Armenian American, what was it like to represent your ancestors and history in these films? I had the opportunity to play an Armenian woman in both films - two very different kinds of women in very different stories. It was a privilege to play these women and to try and reveal the heart and soul of each of those characters. I feel so lucky to have grown up with the strongest and bravest women I know, that being my

mother and grandmother. Their vulnerability, strength, courage, and belief system was imbued in me, and I believe these qualities existed on the page. I could see where they existed between the lines and in the lines to bring truth to these women. I knew so well what the hands of each of these women looked like, and I felt so lucky to play them in The Promise and 1915. How did the role of Clementine Pennyfeather in HBO’s Westworld come about for you? I was on vacation two years ago in San Francisco. In the evening I got an email that I had an audition for a television show called Westworld with an attachment of three pages of sides (audition material) to prepare for the following day. I remember going through the first few lines and getting goosebumps, [flying] through the pages in shock as to what this might be. How could I be moved so quickly? I went over it again and again and again and began to contemplate do I fly back now? Or what do I do? I realized how extreme that it all was and decided I would try to go in once I was back the following week. Sadly, they went a different direction. I’d check in every week, but they were looking at girls of other ethnicities. This went on for three weeks; yet I hadn’t lost hope. On June 30th, my birthday, I finally got an appointment. I told myself this role will be my birthday gift to myself. I felt it was fate. I went in, and the rest is history. As a child, you were convinced films like The Terminator, Terminator 2, and Robocop were real, thinking, “That’s where I want to be, in a different world, in this other life, even if I must die for it.” Ironically, you now play a character who appears lifelike in a different world. Do you feel this prepared you for this role? What an incredible observation! I never even thought about that, oddly. Possibly? Obviously not on a conscious level, but maybe subconsciously? Maybe there was something about being attracted to the future and the unknown to things that were outside humanity. As I’m answering this question, for the first time, I’m starting to reflect on what that all means. Thank you for that observation. If you visited Westworld as a guest, who would you be and how would you spend your time? I would love to be Dr. Ford. I would love to be the creator of all this because I believe that mind must be so fascinating to be in. How does it think, function, see the world? I’m not thinking if I were a guest now, I’m thinking if I could be a character. As a guest, I’d love to be a cowboy who goes on these incredible adventures, riding a horse, camping, and discovering the maze. What's the next thing we will see you in? The Promise will be coming out next year [2017].

It’s no secret that the holidays tend to take a toll on our bodies. Most of us notice the biggest hits are to our waistline. To avoid the bulge during the long winter months we’ve gathered the top ab moves to trim down those waistlines and get through the holidays without any bumps (literally).

BICYCLE CRUNCH
Lay flat on the ground with back pressed into the floor. Place hands on each side of the head. (Do not lock or pull your head up.) Lift knees to a 45-degree angle. HEALTH CHECK
A White Lie written by Dr. Scott Mindel l photo Marcos Mesa Sam Wordley
As the holidays are upon us, our intake of sugar is sure to skyrocket. From cookies to pies and everything in between, we find ourselves unable to resist the holiday treats. However, you may need to rethink that second helping or gorging on the tin of shortbread cookies because you could be creating a deadly addiction. The History Sugar is believed to have originated over 5,000 years ago, but the first recording of it was in 1099 in England. Western Europeans dubbed it as “new spice,” speaking of how pleasant it was. Only royalty and the wealthy could afford it and considered it “white gold.” Sugarcane was brought to the United States in 1619. As sugar production increased so did the need for labor. Working in sugarcane fields was dangerous and hard, so the British West Indies imported over four million slaves from Africa. Once slavery ended in the United States, slave refugees from Haiti migrated, and sugar plantations began in Louisiana all the way to Hawaii. Through the 1800s, canning, ice cream, and candy greatly increased the demand for the sweet substance. The consumption of sugar for the average American went from 4 pounds to 18 pounds in the 1800s, increasing to 90 pounds in the 1900s. Today, the average American consumes 180 pounds of sugar a year. Defining Sugar The body does require sugar, but the difference is natural versus manufactured. Fruit may contain over 18 grams of sugar, but it also contains fiber. Our bodies take a long time to digest fiber so the sugar is released slowly into our bloodstream, giving us a sustained source of energy and keeping us full for longer periods of time. However, manufactured table sugar and high fructose corn syrup found in soda, sports drinks, energy drinks, and processed fruit juices is an empty calorie additive with no vitamins, minerals, protein, or fiber. The uptake of liquid sugar to the bloodstream happens immediately, leaving us hungry with the tendency to overeat. It satisfies a craving but doesn’t give your body what it needs. It is similar to cocaine as it lights up some of the same pleasure centers of the brain, leaving you with a thirst for more and overloading the body. The Effects As sugar consumption has risen, obesity, diseases, and 42 l VILLE l THE HOLIDAY ISSUE

type 2 diabetes rates have skyrocketed worldwide. The most dangerous and highest consumption of sugar is in soda, flavored coffee and flavored tea drinks. A 12-ounce soda contains around 10 teaspoons of sugar, far exceeding the daily allotment of sugar (six teaspoons for women and nine for men). Flavored coffee and tea contain 5 teaspoons. Research by the University of California-Davis reported that LDL cholesterol, the classic risk factor for heart disease, can be raised significantly in just two weeks by drinking sugary beverages at a rate of what many Americans consume daily – four 12-ounce glasses of sugary beverages. For the first time in history, obese people outnumber those underweight. Liver disease that used to be primarily for alcoholics is now being directly related to our increased super-sized sugar appetite. Sweet Prevention Even though the United States does not have a nationwide soda tax, many states and cities are passing laws for one in order to bring awareness and encourage reduced consumption of the beverages. In response, The American Beverage Association and has focused on reducing the sugar consumed from beverages. Some major brands like Pepsi have promised to do so by 2020. The Food and Drug Administration is also helping to make aware of what people are actually consuming. A new nutrition facts panel on the back of packaged food and beverages has been enforced. Companies must list how many grams of sugar and artificial sweeteners (which are just as bad) have been added and what percentage of the recommended daily maximum that represents. Sometimes you can only take so much of the new age mumble rap or sugar pop before you dive into a cave of your favorite familiar artists. But, with a little research, luck, and help from friends you can find talented artists who prove there is still incredible music to be heard. Here are five artists you must know in 2017. ANDERSON .PAAK It has been a busy year for Anderson .Paak. He’s released two studio albums, Malibu and Yes Lawd, toured the world, signed to Aftermath Entertainment, and was featured on the XXL Freshman cover. If you’ve never heard his music, you should already be impressed. His sound transcends genre. One minute it’s hip-hop in its purest and rawest form. A second later, it’s R&B and jazz as smooth as silk. Next, it sounds like it could belong on a deep house mix. www.andersonpaak.com MANATEE COMMUNE Hailing from Bellingham, Manatee Commune (aka Grant Eadie) sounds like a stroll in the woods. This incredibly humble and talented artist is the perfect mixture of chill wave, electronic and indie rock. Grant’s music is rooted in electronic music but is layered with electric guitar, wind chimes, viola, and more. He impressively switches back and forth between Ableton and real instruments during his live performances. www.manateecommune.co
BAS Bas is a Parisian born rapper who now resides in Queens, New York. Only four years after Bas began rapping in 2010, he was signed to J. Cole’s Dreamville Records and released his first album last winter. His sophomore release, Too High To Riot, will give any hip-hop head a warm fuzzy feeling. It demonstrates Bas’s growth as a writer as well as his exploration of social and personal issues. fiends.nyc

MAGGIE ROGERS Last March, Pharrell visited the NYU Clive Davis Institute and was given the chance to listen to students’ music and offer feedback. Maggie Rogers was one of those students. The video of Maggie and Pharrell listening to her song “Alaska” went viral because of Pharrell’s incredible emotional reaction to her music. Maggie’s voice is angelic. She is now signed to Capitol Records, and the music video for “Alaska” reached over 500,000 views in just two days. The singer/songwriter is currently working on her debut album. www.maggierogers.com
SOLANGE When Beyoncé is your older sister, there is undoubtedly a huge shadow looming over you. But with the September release of A Seat at the Table, Solange has really stepped into her own element. Her incredibly soothing voice and the blissful instrumentals are juxtaposed so perfectly with themes of empowerment, culture, pride, and race. With this album, Solange has truly found herself a seat at the table. Let us hope she decides to stick around after this album and tour in the near future. www.solangemusic.com 44 l VILLE l THE HOLIDAY ISSUE

There are many places to venture during the holidays. Some take a beach getaway to escape the cold and dreary winter. Others head to the mountains to enjoy the powdery snow and warm up next to a cozy fire. But for those who want to experience holiday magic, there is only one place to go: New York City. Whether it’s your first time visiting the Big Apple or you’re returning for the hundredth time, here is the essential must-see list while spending the holidays in the city. Your first stop should be the most important, the 9/11 Memorial. Take time to pay homage to the innocent people and heroes who lost their lives. After, head to the biggest and always impressive Christmas tree display at Rockefeller Center. From there, take a selfie on top of the Empire State Building (early morning or mid-afternoon is best), stroll down 5th Avenue and along Macy’s for spectacular window-shopping displays, and dance on the keys of the FAO Schwartz piano. Lastly, catch the famous Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes, New York City Ballet’s The Nutcracker, and if you can squeeze in a Broadway show, you won’t regret it. Just make sure to purchase your tickets the moment you book your trip, as the shows tend to sell out days in advance. This list isn’t even a full piece of the holiday pie. Luckily for you, we narrowed down our best tips on where to stay, where to go, and what to do so you can spend more time experiencing your holiday escape instead of planning it.

If you want to enjoy ale where Abe Lincoln, Babe Ruth, John Lennon, and many more frequented, then McSorely’s is the place to go. The Irish ale house is NYC’s oldest operating bar that opened in 1854. You will have the chance to step into a timeless treasure garnished in holiday trimmings and ornaments. Order one of their two choices of beer – light or dark. Mcsorleys Old Ale House l Randy Aveille

Located in The Carlyle hotel — another famous spot for celebs, legends, and artists — is the classic cocktail piano bar, Bemelmans. It was named for artist Ludwig Bemelmans after he started painting murals in the bar. During the holidays, you can sip on its carefully crafted cocktails while listening to Christmas songs sung by carolers. In case you need a little extra push, you can check it out in Bill Murray’s Netflix special, A Very Murray Christmas.

PUGLIA RESTAURANT
189 Hester St, New York, NY 10013 l www.pugliaofnyc.com
Italians are known for their family gatherings at holiday feasts. When you’re in NYC, you can gather your family and feast a delicious Southern Italy meal at Puglia Restaurant. The food is homemade with family recipes that date back to 1919 when Gregorio Garofalo came over from Italy to cook over hot coals in his rented basement. The dishes come out in heaping portions to share amongst the table, and Puglia’s entertainers will serenade you while you indulge in pasta delight.

The Gansevoort Market started back in 1884 as the Gansevoort Farmers Market. Originally, it was named after Peter Gansevoort, a colonel in the American Revolutionary War. In 1887, it relocated from Fort Gansevoort to Gansevoort Street, dropped the “farmers” title, added more produce, meats, and dairy to its roster, and became a booming stop. Today, it is still thriving and has upgraded to multiple vendors that serve all types of cuisine such ice cream, burgers, and more. During the holiday season, you can shop for special cooking ingredients and buy a Christmas tree on the way out.
Holiday Havens THE PLAZA
photo Christmas Tree at the Plaza l 768 5th Ave, New York, NY 10019 l www.theplazany.com
If you are looking for luxurious holiday displays, The Plaza is where you need to stay. This historic hotel is exorbitant, starting at about a grand per night, but well worth it. The Plaza opened in 1907 on Fifth Avenue and Central Park South. Kings, politicians, celebrities, musicians, and legends have stayed here; movies and books have featured it, and even Santa has a workshop location here. The hotel’s Christmas tree draws a crowd every year. The Palm Court is packed with guests enjoying the special holiday tea offering. The Todd English Food Hall offers a seasonal three-course meal that includes a VIP photo package with Santa himself.
NYLO HOTEL
2178 Broadway (at 77th Street), New York, NY 10024 l www.nylo-nyc.com
If lavish holiday décor isn’t a requirement and you’re looking for something that doesn’t break the bank, then NYLO is a great pick starting at $259 a night. Located on the Upper West Side, it’s only a few blocks from holiday central that includes Times Square, Lincoln Center, Central Park, and two blocks from the nearest subway station if you want to venture farther. For those who want to bring four-legged family members, NYLO is very pet-friendly. Your dogs can stay with you in your room and join you at the lobby bar. Make sure to ask for a copy of the dog-friendly park map and inquire about the pet holiday package with stocking stuffers for your pooch.
Season Secrets YO BROOKLYN!
photo Dyker Heights l Marco Bicci / Shutterstock.com
Brooklyn is just as exciting as Manhattan with its rising number of transplants. But it hasn’t lost the holiday tradition of the spectacular light displays in the neighborhood of Dyker Heights. The displays are so big and so bright you might need to bring sunglasses. While you’re there, stop by DUMBO neighborhood to ride on the majestic merry-go-round, Jane’s Carousel, and sneak a peek at its view of the snowy skyline.
ALTERNATIVE AWES If you are dying to go ice skating in New York, Rockefeller isn’t your only option. The rink can be overcrowded, and the cost can be overpriced. Skate on down to Wollman Rink in Central Park, and you can cut the ice in a bigger rink at half the cost. From Central Park head to Grand Central Terminal to whisper. The Whispering Gallery is an unmarked archway in front of the Oyster Bar & Restaurant that “carries” a conversation from one end to the other when two people stand at the arches and whisper. The sound comes down the arch and sounds like a normal conversation. THE HOLIDAY ISSUE l VILLE l 53
HOME DESIGN
Trending 2017 written by Amy Gruntner
Let’s go back, shall we? In 2016, interior design trends brought a complete whitewash to interior spaces. Wall-to-wall white rooms were decorated with minimalist Scandinavian furniture, brass and copper fixtures, and muted neutral accessories. Wallpaper came back in a big way in a variety of floral patterns. Oversized graphic furniture with harsh modern lines and little functionality filled our rooms. Like every new year, we will be turning a new leaf in interior design and focusing on warmth, functionality, and the escape our homes can offer us.
TERRACOTTA TILES An unexpected way to add charm to your home is by using unique tiles. Terra cotta tiles in their raw form offer neutral warmth and character. Soften your stark white kitchen by installing a terra cotta backsplash and an oak butcher-block island with deep navy walls. Add a terra cotta accent wall to your entryway to get a distinct Mediterranean vibe, and pair with oversized potted greenery and saturated prints in silver frames. To stay on trend, avoid this earthenware when glazed, shined, or painted.
LIGHT METALS Mixing metals in home decor became popular with last year’s trends. This year, this trend continues marching on but in a new direction. Rose gold and brass have been replaced by silver and brushed nickel, both of which have been off trend for the last couple of years. Pair these light metals with classic gold and aged bronze for a more “lived in” modern look. Consider lining silver candlesticks on a honey oak table, with walls accessorized in a row of silverframed mirrors popping against plum walls. Go a step further in this stylish room by incorporating green tufted velvet benches, cream dishware, and largescale paintings.

MODERN RETRO FURNITURE In the past five years, modern furniture has remained the most popular furniture design amongst consumers. In the upcoming new year, the modern aesthetic will take a turn back into the retro ages. Soft, curved lines will replace the harsh modern lines of the past, creating a tranquil and cheery aesthetic. This trend offers a great opportunity to find vintage pieces and revamp them with a simple coat of paint or stain. DIYing your furniture will also add a personal, homey touch to your space.
DEEP PURPLE Benjamin Moore threw everyone a curveball when they announced “shadow, a rich, deep amethyst, as the color of the year. This rich hue exudes warmth and an air of sophistication. Paired with other saturated jewel tones, this palette is a much-needed relief from the white trend of 2016. Accent this hue with raw wood features and warm vintage lighting for a fresh look.
JEWEL-TONED FURNITURE Elevate the look of your living room by implementing this lush trend. Dark green furniture will lead this craze due to its diverse personality. When accented with raw wood floors and a slate grey knit throw, the room will read outdoorsy and very PNW inspired. In contrast, flank the rich hue with dark mahogany coffee tables, aged gold figurines, and blackand-white vintage prints to achieve an oldworld look.
