What’s Happening at the Forest Fair?
Log and Lumber Auction ONTARIO’S BEST LOG AND LUMBER AUCTION will be bigger and better than ever, as it has been every year since it began in 1998. This has become a “must see” event for wood working hobbyists and home restorers in eastern Ontario. Last year over 15,000 board feet of logs, lumber, burls and blocks were auctioned to more than 200 bidders. Species usually available include white pine, butternut, beech, basswood, cherry, red and white oak. Saw milling will again be available on site. FORESTRY EXHIBITS: Check out the educational displays from the Eastern Ontario Model Forest, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, local Stewardship Councils, Conservation Authorities, and other organizations promoting forest conservation and resource management. There will also be booths featuring “goods from the woods.” THE TREE DOCTOR IS IN: If you have a tree that is not doing well, bring a photo or a sample of the trouble spot and visit Dr. Richard Wilson at the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources exhibit. As a specialist in tree diseases and insect pests, the good doctor will attempt to diagnose the problem and suggest remedies. Also, learn how to choose, plant and care for trees by visiting the Ferguson Forest Centre’s nursery sales office. HORSE-DRAWN WAGON RIDES: Enjoy a half-hour guided tour in a horse-drawn wagon along the scenic roads of the Ferguson Forest Centre's tree nursery.
KIDS ACTIVITIES: Take part in the fun with activities including wooden medallion-making, interactive puzzles, nature interpretation, and more. And, don’t miss the outdoor Kids Zone featuring woodsy-themed tossing games, face painting, and more!! THE REPTILE RAINFOREST: Meet the critters of The Reptile Rainforest! From turtles to lizards, learn about natural habitats, protecting endangered species, defense strategies in the wild, reptile diets, and more.
BLACK ASH BASKET MAKING: View and purchase beautiful pieces of art handcrafted from the fibre of the black ash tree by talented basket makers from the Mohawk community at Akwesasne. You are sure to fall in love with these exquisite baskets!
THE FRIENDS OF THE FERGUSON FOREST CENTRE: Shake-a-Paw will be bringing along some adorable husky pups again this year, and there will be dog obedience and other canine capers happening outside. The FFFC will also have info on poisonous plant awareness, an important Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo topic as more people Live Show: “Endangered encounter poison ivy, poison parsnip and other Ontario” from 12:00 to 1:00! less friendly natural An entertaining & educational residents. presentation featuring live
birds, mammals & reptiles in action – with tips on how we can help them!
WOOD CARVERS & TURNERS: See
demonstrations from carvers John Lockie and Larry Everett, and woodturner Marc Coutreau, who have volunteered their time, skill and craftsmanship. Many fine pieces will also be for sale.
The Bug Lady: Andrea Howard is a 'teacher by nature' who will be showing off bugs and other local flora and fauna tidbits! THE B&H TRAIN: “All Aboard!” Once again Jim Davis will be at the fair with his miniature train to take youngsters for a ride around the site.
THE KEMPTVILLE LIONS & ROTARY CLUBS: “Bon appétit!” Enjoy their famous sausage on a bun, hot dogs or hamburgers! LOCAL MUSICIANS: Live performances throughout the day from local musicians on stage in the park – have a seat on the hay bales and enjoy!
