OMNR - Science and Information Branch-Southern Science and Information (SSI) / Eastern Ontario Model Forest
Eastern Ontario Vegetation Inventory / ELC Inventory Workshop Date: March 8th 2011 Location: Monterey Boardroom, Rideau Valley Conservation Authority, Manotick Time: 10:00am – 3:00pm Landscape management, planning, conservation, and ecological restoration require information on the type, extent, structure, and condition of natural vegetation at a range of spatial and temporal scales. Vegetation information, in the form of inventory data or vegetation mapping, or both, is needed to make critical natural resource management and planning decisions in southern Ontario landscapes. Two fine scale vegetation map products have recently been created for eastern Ontario: (1) Spatial extent of the Spatialworks/OMNR Ecological Land Ecological Land Classification Classification Land Cover Mapping for eastern Ontario, and the OMNR (ELC) Land Cover Mapping, Predictive Vegetation Inventory (PVMM) for Ecodistrict 6e10 and the based on FRI mapping St. Lawrence Islands National Park Greater Park Ecosystem. and various ecological and land use layers, produced by Spatialworks in collaboration with Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR), The Eastern Ontario Model Forest, and Environment Canada, and (2) various Predictive Vegetation Mapping products for ecodistrict 6e10 and the St. Lawrence Islands National Park Greater Park Ecosystem, produced by Southern Science and Information, OMNR. This workshop will explore both products, focusing on their applications while addressing both their potential applications and limitations for natural resource management. Workshop objectives: 1. Develop an understanding of currently available vegetation mappings and inventories in southern Ontario 2. Develop an understanding of how the FRI based ELC Land Cover Mapping and the Predictive Vegetation Inventory products were produced, and how these two products can be applied. 3. Discus participating organizations’ current vegetation inventory activities and future plans. Who should attend? Partners who were involved in the production of the ELC Land Cover Mapping and Predictive Vegetation Inventory products, interested organizations and individuals from the areas covered by these two products, and organizations with an interest in developing similar vegetation inventory mapping products.
