SEATTLE MEDIATHEQUE | WIN 2013 | ARCH402 | PROF. KEN TADASHI OSHIMA | Its the 50th anniversary of the 1963 World’s Fair in the Seattle Center. Its been a while now since the excitement created by the future development in the fair has gone. We are asked to create a mediatheque that can do its function as well as bringing the excitement back to the site. Relating to the surounding existing building which is the SIFF and Vera project, this mediatheque will be used to support both programs so people can study about film and media here. seattle center seattle, wa five weeks hand + digital
Existing buildings and main circulations
Modifying dimensions and taking portions from existing landscape
Abstracting the landscape and angle the structure to project to the international fountain
Adding “lanterns” to the building and landscape to bring back the excitement to the area
STRUCTURE DIAGRAM In this mediatheque, the lanterns not only act as a lightbox or meeting space, they are also structural. Dividing the structure into 9 segments and the activities are divided around the lanterns. The spaces have varying height because of the sloping roof and therefore different activities will suit the spaces available

CONCEPT MODELS
The idea of the project began with extending the existing landscape to bring people to different experience. It evolves to the strategy of blending the structure in the landscape while having the lanterns to create an element of surprise. The project ends with a combination of both ideas, therefore extending the landscape with a distinctive architectural feature.

DISCOVERY PARK SKYLAB | FALL 2011 | ARCH300 | PROF. NINA FRANEY | The premise of this project is to create an environment learning center that responds to the site. The idea is to create a folded plane that acts as a continuation of the ground towards the bluff. The folding creates floating spaces that act as the more public lab and outlook. It also fold downwards to create the more private and secure camp space that is retained by the retaining wall installed on the bluff.

JAPANESE PAPER MILL | SPRING 2012 | ARCH302 | PROF. JEN DEE + CHARLIE ANDERSON | We’re commisioned to design a custom paper mill for five Japanese paper artists. The paper mill will be used for making the paper as well as providing spaces to create various arts using the produced paper. The lower level will be used as the paper making space while the upper floor is used as the artist’s studio spaces. Stereometric structure represent the nature that provides materials for the paper making. Tectonic structure conveys the strenous, repetitive process of paper making. The skylights welcome the blessing from the gods as the papers are dried, reinforcing the tradional Japanese culture

PRECEDENT STUDY Before proceeding to design the paper mill, the Eames House was studied in detail as a precedent study. 1/8 scale and 3/4 scale model was created in order to understand the concept of “living in a kite” as mentioned by the Eames couple about the house. The models were also used to study the structural and poetic relationship between the stereometric and tectonic elements of the project.

Circulation
The objective of this project is to make a cultural center in the Testaccio area in Rome, Italy. In order to successfully gather multicultural people in the area, the building uses the courtyard system, which is always familiar in the Italian culture as a place to gather in a typical housing configuration. The courtyard in the cultural center will act as a centre of everything providing flexibility and ease of circulations between the different activities happening in the building. The cultural center will include a mediatheque, small theater, large hall, workshop, maker lab, classrooms, laundromat, cafe and recreation areas.

DWELL, EDUCATE, BLEND | SUMMER 2012 | COMPETITION: BIG TREE PARADIGM | PARTNER: HONG TRUONG The theme of the competition is “Big Tree Paradigm” in which we have to design a dwelling inspired by a big tree. Our take on this is more towards the environment concern that a big tree usually incites in people’s minds. We decide to make a environment education camping space. There are gonna be spaces to do research, observing the nature as well as living rooms. The structure will also sustain itself by having solar panels, just like photosynthesis in a tree.

Third Floor
This project is all about experimenting with daylight and the notion of carving in architecture. We are asked to create three different rooms with distinctive lighting experiences that will change constantly according to the time. The rooms have to be created only by carving a single clay block. Two different circulations, ascending and descending have to connect all the spaces.
