PERSONAL STATEMENT I was born in 21st Feb 1994, in a small rural town of Kuantan in the state of Pahang, Malaysia. Since little, I have always like to design my own space and create crafts. As I grew, I began to “do-it-yourself” on many things especially technology related such as building my own computer. Having a clear understanding of myself, I decided to venture into the world of architecture, hoping to design and create for the people in the future. It is undeniable that architects are the ones who shape this world which we live; epitomizing Winston Churchill’s quote – “we shape our buildings, thereafter they shape us.” – I believe the role of the architect reaches beyond designing just the building itself, rather creating a responsive mechanism which interacts with its surroundings to be synergetic and more importantly, contributing to a greater picture for the city. I now firmly believe that the language of architecture is not a question of a specific style, but every building is designed based on a specific use, in a specific place, for a specific society. Sustainability and technology advancement as today’s issue are the key points to my focus – especially in details which prove functional yet aesthetically intriguing. As architecture become more socially and economically fused among growing cities, it is also imperative that the built environment imbues on healthier living, thus calling on all-rounded sensitive design strategies. The 3 years of studying Diploma in Architecture in Singapore Polytechnic has been a very rough yet exhilarating journey where I faced constant challenges such as accommodation issues which forced me to move multiple times. It was a huge turning point in my life where I had to rediscover and strengthen myself. This discovery has led me to better understanding of my potential in this field and how to further develop my talent. Vincent Tham Jee Sheng

ORCHARD ARTISAN’S COLLECTIVE
PROJECT BRIEF In recent years, there has been a visible trend in Singapore towards handcrafted merchandise. From fasion accessories to food and beverages, the word ‘artisan’ or word alluding to it seems to find its way into the names of one in ever y few new upstarts. It appears that after decades of the impeccable machine, the slowness and imperfection of the human hand is acquiring a renewed status.
6
A centre that promotes artisanr y is, therefore a natural brief for this investigation. It is the nexus for all things created, a place where makers and businesses congregate to exchange ideas and conduct business; a place where the public can learn about handcrafted trades through its bazaar, exhibitions and programmes.
Located in the heart of Singapore’s shopping district, the site chosen for the inte grated project is next to the junction of Orchard Road and Cairnhill Road.

Orchard Road is a palce that lives and thrives on excitement and even anything new that can add to the scene. It’s a road that not only lives on the idea of shopping and luxur y hotels and food. The people that dot Orchard Road helps in painting its rich colours and identity. The tourists, locals, buskers and even the ice-cream uncles that outline the side of the path help shape Orchard Road into what it is now.

Equinox
The more southern location of the sun casts the shadows in such a way as to shade much of the building plot (outlined in red) in the morning to afternoon.
On the shadow range diagram of the June solstice shows the least sun shading for the plot. From this we can infer that the sun shading is less during 21th March to 21th September, than during 21th September to 21th March.

Wind flow
NORMAL SPEED (3M/S) Both low speed and high speed wind flow fall to produce noticeable wind at ground level on the plot area. This is due the terrain and buildings blocking at the lower levels.
HIGH SPEED (8M/S)
NORMAL SPEED (3M/S) At around the 5th storey height, the wind flow can be felt throughout the site.
HIGH SPEED (8M/S)

Wind flow Wind flow simulation using Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software for the wind from the North-North-East direction, which is the prominent wind direction for Singapore, based on the wind rose of Singapore. 1ST STOREY + 5TH STOREY WINDFLOW NORMAL SPEED (3M/S) At low wind speed, there is relatively more wind at the higher elevations than the lower elevations.
HIGH SPEED (8M/S) At high wind speed, the chances of the wind flow forming eddies are higher. Eddies are the swirling of wind and the reverse current created when the fluid flows past an obstacle. In this case, the wind flow on the site at the lower level would be from the reverse direction. As such, any strategies that tries to use the wind for passive cooling would need to consider this information.

DESIGN ISSUE Having a project site as busy and fast-paced as Orchard Road, it is a real challenge to draw people into the space for optimal experience, especially in an art centre where it should be experienced in a much slower pace. Therefore, it is important to consider how to bring in the traffic in the most unobtrusive transition from the exterior to the interior. The idea of creating a journey of different experiences is then generated based on the most optimal sequence of experiences for the people.
CONCEPT - JOURNEY OF EXPERIENCES
12
The different spaces are allocated vertically based on the stages of experiences: Observe, Learn and Exchange Ideas. Event Space is set on the 1st storey where it is most accessible by the public to attract people. Then next storeys showcases the artisan workshops where the user gets to obser ve and appreciate the local artisanr y. Sky Garden is located in between the workshops and classrooms to provide a resting stop to pause. The Exhibition Galler y and Multipurpose hall which are connected are allocated at the top store alongside with F&B restaurant as the grand finale of the journey.
DESIGN STRATEGY To create a continuous journey, the workshop spaces are divided into 4 part and separated. This has also created a light and air well which promotes natural lighting and ventilation. Each boxes are elevated 1200mm higher than the adjacent box is an anti-clockwise manner. A ramp running the circumference is designed to connect all the boxes into a continuous string of spaces. This allows the user to seamlessly transitions between boxes even on different storeys. 13
A C H I E V I N G S U S TA I N A B I L I T Y Workshop spaces are divided to promote natural ventilation and lighting. Each workshop spaces are equipped with parallel opening windows to provide the freedom of choice in ventilation to the artisan.
14
By introducing a light and air well, public spaces such as lobby can be naturally ventilated and illuminated, thus reducing energy consumption. The introduction of light well has also drastically promote visual connectivity between spaces thus enhancing the user experience.

Concrete is the one of most abundant material to be produced locally which is light in maintanece and easily obtainable in addition to suitable to use in local context. Materials selected are mostly concrete of var ying shade of grey and size, ranging from concrete screed, mosaic tiles to 900x900mm concrete tiles. Different colour and size of concrete tiles give off different atmostphere and sense of space. Each type of concrete finish is selected to enchance the respective spaces.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR - MUSIC
SP Piano Ensemble Noir et Blanc - 2014
I first took piano lessons at the age of 10 at Khoo Academy of Music and Arts. 2 years later, I picked up the Cello and shortly when I entered secondary school, I picked up the Saxophone next after I joined the school marching band. As the time goes, I picked up guitar and double bass to broaden my skills. Now, I hold a Level 4 Associate Diploma in Recital in Cello with Distinction from Trinity College London and passed the Grade 8 Theory in Music with Merit from The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Music has always been a huge part in my life. I have a strong passion in creating and performing music for the people. Ever since I started this journey of music, I have been constantly performing in many forms: string quartet, wind band, saxophone solo, small ensemble, orchestra, etc. The type of performances I took part were of a huge variety ranging from simple school club performances to record breaking of over 800 people singing Christmas Carols with full orchestra. 24
SP Piano Ensemble Noir et Blanc - 2014
SP Symphonic Band Musical Delights XXXVII - 2014
Being a senior, I often helped out in tutoring and organizing music camps. Moreover, I brought in the wind members from my school band into the string orchestra of the academy to form a proper full orchestra to significantly widen our repertoire. Being able to play both a string and a wind instrument, I often switch between the two instruments while playing in concerts.
The wind members of Khoo Academy of Music and Art Christmas Chorus - 2012
Coming to Singapore in furthering my studies did not stop me from being active in music. I joined the Singapore Polytechnic Symphonic Band, Piano Ensemble and String ensemble. I got to perform with all 3 clubs in places such as Esplanade Concert Hall and SOTA Concert hall.
25
My greatest passion is in transcribing and making music arrangements. I have created many arrangements including double string quartet, piano duets, wind band and full orchestra. During my days in the academy, I was often the one responsible in deciding the recital and create music arrangements when it was necessary. Especially in wedding ceremony performances where the bridegroom specially requested any modern music such as pop songs. I then further develop this ability by taking up micro jobs during my free time. The scope of job includes making music arrangements and compositions, creating unique background music for events and teaching. 26
Being active in this world of music has greatly widen my horizon and significantly benefited in my journey into the world of architecture. I learned to balance between my own creativity and the aim of the projects. Over the years, the skills that I have developed were communication, versatility and leadership. Ultimately, I learned that the true worth of art is in the sharing.

AFS INTERCULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAM AUSTRIA SEMESTER PROGRAM 2012
I was also chosen to take part in a cultural exchange program and was sent to Austria with a local family for 6 months. I was given the chance to immerse into their culture and learn to speak fluent German. In addition, I got to meet other fellow exchange students from all over the world and form strong friendship bonds that transcend cultural differences. However, it was no bed of roses as trying to fit into a foreign environment, alone and unable to speak German at first, was very difficult. Many students could not complete the program due to alienation and homesickness.
28
During my stay in Austria, I got to experience many things that are unavailable in tropical countries such as skiing. Adapting to their diet as more of a challenge than I expected. As a born Asian, I never realized how dependent I am to rice until it was completely taken away from me. Adapting to their culture was also very challenging. I may an exciting new transfer student from Asia and I got many attentions in the beginning, but after two months, people stop seeing me as a fresh new student and I was left by my own devices. I had to proactively mingle with the people even though I was still unable to speak and understand their language and take everything in humbly and open-mindedly to avoid misunderstandings.
This program had a huge impact on me and had significantly widen my horizon. I became a lot more open-minded, patient and independent. Moreover, I was able to travel alone to many places within Austria as well as to Germany, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Italy, and experience the amazing architectures first-handed.
After my exchange program, I volunteered in many activities organized by AFS such as training the new batches of exchange students in pre-departure orientation camps and helping students from other countries into Malaysia in welcoming orientation camps. All these activities have helped me significantly in developing communication and leadership skills which will benefit greatly in my future endeavors. 29
